In a thrilling top-of-the-ladder clash, Gisborne-Kyneton United edged out Taylors Lakes by just seven points in a fiercely contested match that went down to the wire. The lead changed multiple times throughout the day as both sides brought their best football in a high pressure, highly contested game. The match was ultimately decided in the final quarter, when experienced ruck Belinda Hateley pushed forward and slotted a crucial goal, giving GKU the breathing room they needed to hold on for the win. Hateley was instrumental all day, dominating the ruck contests and providing first use to a developing midfield group. Ainslie, Korinfsky and Nicholson were relentless through the midfield, linking up beautifully to feed the outside runners Chiara Dickson and Alicia Chadwick and keep the ball moving forward for GKU. Their work around the stoppages helped set the tone in a game where territory was hard-fought. On the scoreboard, Hateley, Cowan and Jacobsen-Logan all contributed with two goals each, providing a consistent threat up forward. GKU’s defensive unit held strong under immense pressure from the Taylors Lakes forward line. Mitchell played arguably her best football to date, intercepting and rebounding well, while Peterson, Lenius and Brancatisano were rock solid in defense, shutting down key opposition attacks and helping to maintain structure when it mattered most. GKU 6.5.41 def Taylor’s Lakes 5.4.34. Round 5 sees GKU take on Sunbury Kangaroos Saturday May 10, 5pm at Gardiner Reserve. The 20 single-occupant rooms are being built thanks to $5.7 million in funding through the state government’s Community Housing New Build Grant program. Indigo Junction provides accommodation and crisis support for people in the Midland area who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, children and family services, family and women’s domestic violence support and youth and community programs. On completion, the youth accommodation project will provide crisis and transitional accommodation for young people, predominantly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, aged 15 to 25. The three-storey complex will comprise 10 bedrooms for crisis accommodation and 24/7 supervision as well as 10 one-bed units on the second and third floors designed for transitional accommodation. The development allows Indigo Junction to provide accommodation for young people with disabilities, with the final design ensuring there is a high standard of disability access.  The project is expected to reach completion at the end of 2026. Midland MLA Steve Catania said Indigo Junction did really important work in the community, and funding will ensure that critical work helps more people in our community. “Our government has invested significantly to deliver projects just like this, and I’ll continue to advocate for and support more assistance for people in need throughout the Midland area.” Housing and Works Minister John Carey said the government had invested or allocated more than $5 billion in housing and homelessness measures to assist the most vulnerable people in the community, including young people and those living with disability.  “The Community Housing New Build Grants program is a critical part of our social housing investment program and is providing financial support the community housing sector needs to deliver for our state’s most vulnerable people. “Housing remains one of our government’s top priorities, and we will continue to invest in new initiatives that support vulnerable people in our community and make homes more affordable.” CNN and the BBC World Service which is copyright and cannot be reproduced AEST = Australian Eastern Standard Time which is 10 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich INDEPENDENT Midland candidate Sarah Howlett says there are some big traffic issues in Midland and the smarter thing would be to do a traffic study of the whole area first to understand where the problems are and have a look at the solutions before spending anymore money who is a City of Swan Midland Guildford ward councillor Cale Street and the closing of the Helena Street crossing were causing big issues Swan View that they’re not coming to Midland because it’s too difficult to get in,’’ she said “So that is very upsetting for the Midland business district – they’re choosing to shop in High Wycombe The Robinson Road level crossing was closed to make way for the Bellevue railcar depot “Robinson Road obviously is still being raised as an issue – two years on there has been no movement there.’’ She said she had heard that up to 20 businesses had closed down but she hadn’t had that data validated “The level crossing at Cale Street and the access to that level crossing from Cale Street across is fraught with danger – having to turn left to do a permitted U-turn onto Victoria Street then left onto Cale Street is how you access that crossing from here – that’s how you get to the other side of the railway line “The other problem is when you are heading north from Cale Street you have to run the gauntlet of Victoria Street to come to the small little exchange to be able to turn right to go back up Great Eastern Highway “And if you’re turning right it’s all those problems – if you are turning right heading east to go right onto Cale Street to go to the crossing traffic is banking up in all directions “It’s become a very bespoke road network that is fraught with one-way streets single lane access and this is the metropolitan regional centre of Midland and that’s a problem.’’ As a strategic centre DevelopmentWA have control over so much of the area but she said the traffic issues were all caused by DevelopmentWA – they’re all state government planning problems “Well before the station was being constructed and at the planning stages that intersection was raised by the Metronet community consultation group of which I was a community member and we were asking why is the level crossing being opened there because (it) was state government policy (to not open them).’’ Another question was how were people meant to access the crossing and this was what they’ve come up with In relation to comments by self-confessed train obsessive Kevin McQuoid from a railway family that the Cale Street level crossing in Midland should have followed a Horseshow bridge solution she said it was possible but it had been said to her that overpasses wouldn’t work because WA’s freight ran on double height containers and that’s where the amount of road you needed to create the ramp didn’t exist “But if they’d moved the freight line like they were meant to we wouldn’t necessarily have this issue – that’s another problem in itself “The other problem it’s caused by closing Helena Street crossing is that from the Coal Dam development (people) have to access through Amherst Road around the primary school and then exit over the Morrison Road crossing – that banks up so far and you can get caught at that boom gate for 20 minutes which means people in Woodbridge can’t actually leave their community because of the traffic banking up a grade separation at Morrison Road – I don’t know if that the right answer as that’s going to reclaim the primary school and I don’t know where we’re driving the traffic – the smarter thing would be doing a traffic study...before we spend another dollar trying to do a little patch work.’’ The New Midland Station Project is set to reach a significant milestone with the opening of a new multi-storey car park on Monday located within the existing station’s footprint will provide much-needed parking relief for commuters with 20 dedicated ACROD bays and 13 motorcycle bays It is equipped with modern amenities such as Pay by Plate and SmartParker machines The facility also includes provisions for future electric car charging stations As part of the Summer of Free Travel initiative parking will be free for all SmartRider holders until February 5 the standard $2 per 24-hour period parking fee will apply The car park’s design prioritises visual appeal reflecting local geographical landmarks and Aboriginal language group colours represents the area between the Western Australian coast and the Darling Ranges Transport Minister Rita Saffioti highlighted the significance of the new facility stating: “The opening of the new multi-storey car park marks a major milestone in our redevelopment of the Midland Station “The new car park includes 770 parking bays across the five-storey building providing much-needed relief to the station’s previous parking pressure.” Midland MLA Michelle Roberts highlighted the car park’s impact on accessibility noting: “This new multi-deck car park will make it easier than ever before for people in Midland and surrounding areas to access our world-class train network.” The opening of the new car park will allow for the decommissioning of the existing parking area paving the way for the construction of a temporary and permanent bus interchange This marks the next phase in the ongoing redevelopment of Midland Station which aims to reshape the heart of in the toolbox” by Mayor Bill Gordon the provincial land-use and development approval MZO (Minister’s Zoning Order) was granted for municipalities to hasten development through zoning matters Midland council had an opportunity in March to approve use of an MZO for approximately 420 proposed units within a mixed-use subdivision development at 565 Balm Beach Road but unanimously chose hosting a non-statutory public meeting to allow the public to be a part of the process before making the formal approval During this week's meeting, Jamie Robinson of MHBC Planning explained that the MZO request was made to get around red tape surrounding OPA 7's (Simcoe County's Official Plan Amendment) He said that if council were to grant MZO approval there would still be various studies and that council would still have the opportunity to grant or deny the proposed development as per due process The first member of the public to speak was planner Greg Barker of Innovative Planning Solutions who expressed support for the MZO usage and added that an adjacent property on Balm Beach Road would also be looking for a similar application to Midland council in the near future Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North CEO Kimberley Woodcock also spoke at the podium in support Project developer Delbrook Group had earlier offered to donate lands toward affordable housing to the not-for-profit organization some locals shared reservations over the implications of development in the corridor between County Road 93 and Marshall Road Town staff and council members responded to concerns from Midland resident Judy Thomas by saying a lack of available family doctors could be alleviated by providing them housing and the issue of overcrowded schools would be a matter for school boards to explore they noted that wildlife in the area would be part of a study Thomas also mentioned a previous petition made in decades past which asked for a speed reduction along Balm Beach Road (it changes from 60 km/h to 80 km/h near the Salvation Army) to a continuous 60 kilometres per hour adding that it had been defeated back then Tiny Township resident Dave Hobson raised caution to safety requirements in the area speaking from perspective as a member of the police and the planners attending the meeting to explore street lights as well as consideration for a speed reduction Gordon stated during the public meeting: “If there were ever a reason to believe that it’s the right thing to do in Midland “And I’m hoping the takeaway for other developers who will see this and perhaps factor in more Habitat lots into their builds to participate in that public-private partnership – which I believe is the future of trying to solve the housing crisis,” Gordon added Midland’s committee of the whole approved to support the MZO request with potential ratification at an upcoming regular meeting of council The matter would then be sent to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing for further approval Delbrook CEO Mehdi Shafiei told MidlandToday that the concerns were critical for the developers as well and assured that they would be addressed through detailed analysis and studies with consultants as well as through collaboration with the town planning department “The support was great,” said Shafiei “That shows that people know that they need housing and the shortage of housing in Ontario is all over the news so that’s understandable.” Woodcock told MidlandToday that the benefits to housing reach far beyond simple lodging but to have a development that’s committed to multiple areas of the housing continuum – which includes inclusivity and affordability – it’s a very responsible way of developing,” said Woodcock “The concerns are understandable but also addressable.” When asked about the potential for other developers to donate lands similar to Delbrook’s offer Woodcock replied: “Habitat for Humanity is excited by any and every opportunity to create affordable housing and serve people in the community who need help accessing affordable and secure housing.” The MZO non-statutory public meeting presentation by MHBC Planning is available in Archives of council meetings are available through Rogers TV and on the Town of Midland’s YouTube channel Few warnings have the impact and clarity like the one that can be found on the last page of the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition’s (SCGC) information package that promotes the benefits of expanding the Greenbelt.  what happens to our environment happens as well to us and our community," it says the local organization has attempted to cut through all of the clutter to deliver what the boxing world would call ‘the knockout punch’ — a claim so direct and accurate there’s virtually no room to debate it At an education/information session Sunday afternoon presented by the Facebook group Engaging Residents of Oro-Medonte and held at the Oro-Medonte Community Arena a few dozen area residents turned out to hear what they can do to ensure the long-term health of their communities “We’re here as part of a four-part series about how the Greenbelt can be beneficial to water security in Simcoe County,” said Margaret Prophet We had one in Tiny Township about two weeks ago and we’re going to have another one in Alliston and then up towards Clearview “We’re talking specifically about the Oro Moraine and how important it is not only to the residents of Oro-Medonte but to the greater water security in Simcoe County and how we can make sure that we can have places that provide our water provide us with recreation and tourism dollars and make sure our communities are livable," she added.  Rather than direct the conversation with traditional talking points the organizers of the afternoon session put the direction and onus of the conversation on those who attended Prophet and her session ‘facilitators’ encouraged the residents to share their values “We find that residents really know their communities best,” Prophet said “We’re trying to have a conversation about how the Greenbelt can be beneficial for them to kind of cue into their own concerns about water security.” At one of the 'break-out’ tables the discussion ranged from how folks got their water the value of wetlands in the community and the impacts of aggregate mining to the urbanization of rural areas allowed residents to keep their concerns top of mind so when the Greenbelt’s 10-year statutory review is held sometime later this year they’ll have their input prepared and ready to go the province designated Simcoe County as a high priority for Greenbelt expansion because urbanization was threatening water security “Growth pressures were kind of overwhelming the water table and it was written about in various reports,” Prophet said “So that was a proposal that was trying to figure out how do we keep the moraine and the watershed “It’s a balancing act versus an erasure of one over the other,” she added Understanding there are competing priorities at work is essential to building the right plan but it only works if everyone is using the same factual information “The government’s responsibility really should be ‘we’re making decisions based on the evidence,'” Prophet said I don’t know if they necessarily lie we have forgotten that evidence matters.” She compared the government’s actions to an individual making an insurance claim after a car crash you have to tell them what the value of the vehicle is how badly damaged it is and you have to have receipts to back it up,” Prophet said She said she’s made numerous presentations that have been criticized by government decision-makers because they don’t like the facts — not that they disagree with them “The presentation I did today is a short version of what I would normally do,” Prophet said “It kind of feels a little bit like I’m going to depress you but I really need you to understand what the baseline is here." She gets that she’s not delivering good news but that doesn’t sway her commitment “This is civics engagement 101,” Prophet said Who’s got your interests at heart?  People need to know that someone’s going to listen to them.” (Editor's note: MTN Sports is featuring a Midland Roundtable Athlete of the Year finalist nightly leading into this year's awards banquet Monday at the Billings Hotel and impressive The three-sport standout has earned numerous accolades in soccer and notably helped her basketball team to a 24-0 championship season just over a year ago It doesn’t happen very often … I think the last time a (Class) AA team went undefeated was in the 1980s,” Smart said Just weeks after clinching the basketball title Smart secured a state shot put championship with her mother alongside her as throws coach “I just felt so much joy and I sprinted across the ring and jumped in my Mom’s arms and gave her the biggest hug but it was an incredible moment,” she recalled In a an independent candidate for the seat of Midland and says it’s time Midland’s traffic got the state government attention it deserved Ms Howlett has lived in Midland for 30 years and is serving her fourth year in the city as a councillor for the Midland Guildford ward owned businesses and volunteered thousands of hours to community service in Swan She has spent 25 years managing key hospitality venues in the Swan Valley and has recently moved into the glass industry Ms Howlett said she strongly believes the Midland electorate deserves better and has been let down by successive state governments “I am running because the seat of Midland is considered a safe Labor seat and it has been for the last 29 years under the same elected member,” she said “You need to be a swing seat or a marginal seat to get anything done “Our elected member has been Speaker of the House a very important job 100 per cent but it’s a political party job “It’s not representative for the electorate our elected member was the Minister of Police where does that leave time for her to look after her electorate affairs and the people and their concerns “So my frustrations are born out of 29 to 30 years of seeing Midland stagnate “A lot of that I’ve come to learn is through decisions made by state government Ms Howlett said she had been doorknocking since June to understand what residents’ concerns were and traffic became an issue repeated again and again She said the biggest problems were the road network infrastructure and decisions around traffic infrastructure which was causing business in Midland to die as people began shopping elsewhere “Even Guildford’s choosing to shop elsewhere,” Ms Howlett said “People won’t come into Midland because it’s just not accessible “None of these major state government decisions have been in the best interest of the businesses in Midland “So that’s one of the spurs that has got me wanting to run.” who has volunteered thousands of hours to community service Ms Howlett said she wanted to reform the planning system which has taken powers away from the community and local governments Swan residents will have a chance to see Ms Howlett and talk to her about issues or meet her during her Meetings in the Park events DETECTIVES from the serious and organised crime division have charged a 46-year-old man with several offences in relation to a
