Thousands flocked to Naples once again for the US Open Pickleball Championships
where a handful of newcomers made their respective marks with gold and silver medals
Here are the results from the five championship matches on championship Saturday
May 3 at the East Naples Community Park for the ninth edition of the US Open Pickleball Championships
Ryler DeHeart and Richard Livornese: A close 14-12 game in the first set proved to be just enough for Munro and Yang
both 21-year-old prodigies who are on the come up in the pickleball world
The two notched an 11-5 win in the second set to end the match
It was far less anticlimactic than their semifinal contest against Armaan Bhatia and Harsh Mehta
who has only been on the circuit for two years
lauded Munro for getting him into the game and the opportunity
Jack took a chance on me in this tournament
Despite the loss from DeHeart and Livornese
the two managed to rally down 9-3 in the first set
and it always helps when your partner's eyes are unreal," Livornese said
Women's Pro DoublesAnna Leigh Waters and Leigh Waters def
Jillian Braverman and Megan Fudge: Despite falling short with tennis legend Andre Agassi in the second round of action in mixed doubles
Anna Leigh Waters wouldn't be denied of winning women's pro doubles with her mother
The mother-daughter duo cruised against Jillian Braverman and Fudge
securing back-to-back titles in women's pro doubles
set the tone early with her mother and put the pressure on Braverman and Fudge
An 11-4 second set ended the match in just under 29 minutes after a valiant effort from the second-place finishers
Riley Bohnery and Richard Livornese: Munro and Fudge each managed to cap off the night with another gold medal
as the pair defeated Riley Bohnery and Richard Livornese
"I'm just serving and returning and she's doing everything else..
This was one of the best crowds all week."
Bobbi Oshiro: All coming down to capitalization off mistakes
Fudge made things look somewhat easy against Bobbi Oshiro early
winning 11-4 and 11-7 after a handful of unforced errors ultimately cost Oshiro the match
Fudge kept Oshiro on the run more often than not
but Fudge's precision was ultimately too much in the blistering heat
"I just feel like I'm playing chess out there," Fudge said in a post-match interview
my coach for giving me notes every morning on how I'm going to attack this day
Definitely credit to him in a singles game that allowed me to stay calm and execute his gameplan."
Grayson Goldin: Over the course of the match
it was clear who the more superior and complete player was
Hayworth secured his first gold at the US Open in an 11-3
Hayworth often capitalized on facets of the game where Goldin lacked
moving him side to side and capitalizing on mistakes at the net
Hayworth played a far different match than last year
where he lost to Jack Foster for the title
the finals was probably one of my worst matches all year," Hayworth said
"I was not gonna come out here and play a bad match
It wasn't the first match between the two sides this year
as they've both met at least six times this season thus far
with plenty of familiarity throughout the contest
"We warmed up together this morning," Hayworth said
"We definitely know each other's games and it can always go either way."

Campbelltown Council took out a “stop use’’ order against the Australian Muslim Welfare Centre in Eagleview Road
This was in response to complaints from local residents that the centre was illegally being used as a place of worship
The issue ended up in the Land and Environment Court
the Australian Muslim Welfare Centre has lodged a planning proposal to rezone the land to allow the Eagleview Road centre to be used as a place of public worship
During debate of the proposal at last night’s council meeting
veteran councillor Meg Oates said the proposed zoning change could put at risk “planning and amenity’’
“We have to be very careful that if we do these kind of rezonings the amenity of the area is not adversely affected,’’ Cr Oates said
who in the end was the only one to vote against the rezoning
“This doesn’t sit well with me either,’’ Cr Zahra said
A number of councillors spoke in favour of the rezoning request
Mayor Darcy Lound said that Campbelltown had changed over the past few years
and this change was something that could be supported now
A report to council said the Local Planning Panel had given conditional support for the rezoning proposal for 13-17 Eagleview Road
the panel sought more information from the applicants on the intensity and frequency of use as a place of public worship
the panel asked for a limit on the scale and capacity at prayer events and more information regarding traffic impact on the locality
It also asked that the applicant “demonstrate the suitability of the C4 zone for the proposed use
with consideration given to the preservation of environmental amenity.’’
The report said that the applicant revised their proposal in response to the planning panel
in 2012 council granted development consent for the construction of an outbuilding on the Eagleview Road site
The development consent included the following conditions:
• The use of the craft studio was limited to a maximum of 5 people
• The hours of operation were restricted to between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday
• The use of the site for any purpose other than a craft studio
council granted a new consent for alterations and additions to the existing outbuilding for use as a community facility
• occupancy at the site for events and gatherings was capped at 50 people for regular weekly activities
• a maximum of 150 people was permitted 12 times a year for infrequent events such as birthday parties
• the use of the site as a place of public worship
or any other land use not specified by that development consent is not permissible on the site
a modification application was submitted to council seeking to:
• increase the maximum attendance at the site for regular weekly activities from 50 to 100 people
• increase the maximum attendance for larger events at the premises on Friday
Saturday and Sunday from 100 to 220 people (maximum of 2 gatherings a day with a minimum 1- hour gap between each event)
• construction of an awning at the rear of the community facility
• alter and upgrade the car park to increase the amount of parking available on site
• construct a 1.8 m fence along the northern
eastern and southern boundaries for noise attenuation
The application was approved on July 11 this year
As for last night’s approval of the planning proposal
it will now be sent to the NSW department of planning
housing and infrastructure for determination
If a green light is given by the state government
the proposal will be put on public exhibition by Campbeltown Council and local residents will have the opportunity to make submissions – one way or the other
If the proposal goes through all these hoops
the applicant will still need to lodge a Development Application to allow the site to be used as a place of public worship

One of the incidents that led to an arrest occurred in January this year when police were called to Edmonson Park railway station
following reports a man had allegedly groped a woman without her consent
Officers arrived and were told the man had allegedly followed a 23-year-old woman around the station before touching her in a sexual manner without her consent
Following extensive inquiries Operation Waratah officers arrested a 19-year-old man at Bankstown Police Station last Thursday
The man was charged with sexually touching another person without consent and common assault

A veteran activist has defended a hotline for New Zealanders to report Israeli soldiers holidaying in New Zealand
The Human Rights Commission said it had received more than 100 complaints about a digital flyer promotion the hotline, distributed by the Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa. The Commission has called for an immediate halt of the hotline and said it sets a dangerous precedent
It is calling for an immediate halt of the hotline
But the network's national chairperson John Minto
the government should focus on speaking out against Israel's actions in Gaza instead of condemning New Zealanders
"Israeli soldiers are coming from Gaza to have rest and recreation here," he said
"I've come across heaps of Israeli soldiers out backpacking."
When pressed on how he could tell a person was an Israeli soldier
Minto said "if you interacted with them you'd know where they're from."
Foreign minister Winston Peters told Morning Report
the hotline is a "hunt" that could lead to violence
"You just heard from a long time judgemental
five-decade old protagonist ," Peters said of Minto
"Everybody in the Israeli population has to serve male or female
whether they were in Gaza or not he doesn't know
"I frankly don't know why we tolerate this person and his arrogant views."
Tourists came to New Zealand from all over the world
but we haven't kicked out ordinary citizens in the haphazard way he [Minto]
Peters claimed the behaviour by the network could lead to violence against Jewish people, like what had been seen in Australia
Jewish Council spokesperson Juliet Moses said the hotline was "vigilante justice" and crossed a line
"My fear is that there will be violence ...it's targeting individuals based on their nationality
"It's not up to John Minto to decide what we do
We don't take matters into our own hands here."
Minto said talking about the risk of vigilante justice was "all hot air"
He denied the hotline counted as racial profiling

Wales U20s host Ireland on Friday night at Rodney Parade
so what better time than now to take a look at the young Dragons who are shining on the international stage
After Harri Ford’s heroics in the win against the Azzurri
has started both games so far away in France and Italy
he and his 20s teammates will be returning home to play in front of a packed Rodney Parade crowd under the lights
“It’s massive to be at Rodney Parade,” said Minto
“Being home is an amazing experience and feeling.”
“I have been coming here to watch the Dragons since I was four or five and to play on that pitch is incredible
“It’s always a stadium where no matter how many tickets are sold it’s a good atmosphere and I think we’re quite lucky to play here
it’s something we need to grasp for the challenge against Ireland.”
While Wales will be buoyed by confidence following their first away win in five years Minto is in no way complacent about the test Ireland will pose
“The win against Italy was massive,” said Minto
“Even though we didn’t play as well as we could have and it shouldn’t have been that tight we definitely did well to take the opportunity and get the win
“Ireland are always strong at age-grade level but as a pack we have been solid at the set piece and in the loose and we are very confident that we can do a job on them
“We have to show them respect because of how good they have been but not too much respect and fly into them.”
Minto goes into the game against Ireland fresh from making his home debut against Glasgow on Sunday
having made his first appearance for Dragons in the win against Newcastle in December
Minto has ticked off quite a few of his short-term goals
Speaking after impressing in the Dragons A games against Scarlets and Ospreys in November
Minto said: “Hopefully I can push into the 20s squad and just be in the senior environment at Dragons
trying to learn as much as I can over the next year and hopefully push on into getting a first team appearance in the near future.”
Doubtless Minto would have balked at the suggestion that he would already have two caps for Dragons to go with his starts for Wales U20s
but the backrower is humble enough to know that his accelerated opportunities are in part as a result of Dragons’ extensive injury list
“Before Glasgow it was almost a bit of luck,” said Minto
“I was meant to be travelling reserve because Dragons had a few injuries and Aaron Wainwright on international duty.”
“Dan Lydiate then had a knock and that meant I moved onto the bench
I wasn’t expecting to get half an hour
I thought that I might just get the last five minutes
“I was thankful and grateful to get on when I did and felt that meant I could get into the game more
you have to take the opportunities that you get
we are a young team and if we stay together then good things can definitely come from it.”
Minto certainly wasn’t afraid to make his presence known with some typically powerful carries and hard-hitting tackles which have epitomised his appearances so far in the U20 Six Nations
Uncompromising tackling and ball-carrying have been the staple of backrower Harri Keddie
someone Minto says he has always “looked up to” especially with the Dragons centurion coaching the teenager at Under 18s level
Minto has played for Pontypool RFC and Hartpury this season
admitting he can get “confused” from moving between all of the training camps but knows the experiences provided from all three will accelerate his learning
“It is a lot and I have been getting used to one team’s plays and the next thing you know I am in another team,” admitted Minto
“Pontypool was a really good experience at the start of the season
then I went up to Hartpury and that was a big opportunity to get decent game time in the English Championship
“Some teams in the Championship are really quick and play on an artificial surface and then you go up against others who love it when it’s raining and play 10-man rugby
“The physicality was brilliant because it has helped me to get used to playing against fully-grown men.”

The Minto 81’s are back in action on Friday
2025 at the Harry Howell Arena in Flamborough
looking to punch their ticket to the 2025 Allan Cup Challenge championship game
Standing in their way are the host Wentworth Gryphins
a squad Minto edged 3-2 earlier in the tournament
After going undefeated to win Division Two
Minto earned a direct berth into the Friday night semifinal
They’ll now face a red-hot Gryphins club that eliminated the defending champion Dundas Real McCoys 6-2 in the quarterfinals
"We’re expecting their best tonight," said Minto Head Coach Ryan Fisk in an interview ahead of the game
The last time these two teams met was on April 22
with a first-place semifinal berth on the line
Wentworth opened the scoring late in the first period
but former Listowel Cyclones forward Chayse Herrfort sealed the win for the 81’s
scoring the go-ahead goal with under five minutes to play
"We proved to ourselves that we can skate with them
"They’re highly skilled from top to bottom
but I think our guys are excited for the challenge."
The 81’s have already made history at this year’s tournament
Minto became the first Ontario Senior AA men’s team to win a game at an Allan Cup tournament
Much of the offensive firepower has come from Garrett Meurs
who exploded for four goals in that debut game
"Anytime you can get Garrett Meurs in your lineup
you know he’s going to make a difference," said Fisk
enters the semifinal with momentum after a dominant win over Dundas
The Gryphins overwhelmed the Real McCoys with a 47-shot barrage
The Gryphins are looking to ride the energy of their home crowd as they push for a spot in Saturday’s 3:00 p.m
But Minto believes they’ve got the tools to win again
"It’s good for our league to show we can compete with these teams," said Fisk
"Hopefully it keeps more players wanting to come back to our league to play."
Friday’s semifinal between Minto and Wentworth is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
with the winner moving on to face either the Clarenville Ford Caribous or the St

It's part of their campaign against the war on Gaza

says now is a window of opportunity to pressure Israel more to continue with the ceasefire.

2025) - F3 Uranium Corp (TSXV: FUU) (OTCQB: FUUFF) ("F3" or "the Company") is pleased to announce that ground geophysical exploration programs have commenced on the Broach and Minto Properties
A total of 55 line km of Moving Loop TDEM ground EM will be undertaken on two grids of interest testing suspected conductive corridors previously identified by airborne surveys
and both parallel to the A1 conductor system which hosts the high grade JR Zone on the PLN property
14 line-km of MLTDEM ground geophysics testing an approximately 7,200m long conductive corridor identified by airborne MobileMT which was flown by F3 in 2023
F3 has one hole drilled on this grid in 2014; PLN14-021 intersected up to 44ppm uranium in basement
and 698ppm boron directly above the Athabasca Unconformity at 413m
Anomalous geochemistry and proximity to the Harrison fault in a corridor parallel to the A1 conductor make this grid a strong exploration target area
41 line-km of MLTDEM ground geophysics covering a suspected conductive trend
This particular area of the Broach property hosts thick discontinuous layers of conductive mudstones and these flat lying conductive units hampered the effectiveness of a previously flown airborne EM (VTEMmax) survey flown in 2014
Ground based geophysics is anticipated to effectively penetrate the conductive cover allowing for drill target generation
Due to its location near the interpreted Athabasca Basin boundary and the historic difficulty of exploring under conductive cover
commented: "We are excited with the prospect of upgrading the Broach and Minto properties to the drilling stage with this round of ground EM
which we anticipate assisting in reducing broader airborne conductivity responses to more precise conductor models for drill testing
where some historic ground EM coverage prompted us to drill a single hole in 2014
this new ground EM will give us an improved conductor model
in a strategic location near the projected confluence of the Harrison Fault with the A4 conductive corridor
we are aiming to generate a conductivity model in an area where no previous airborne EM conductors have been clearly identified
near the margins of the Athabasca Basin in an area of very limited historical drilling
Identifying ground conductors near the present day margins of the basin is something that we are specifically interested in
recent re-modelling of historic ground EM surveys south of Broach Lake has resulted in an additional target; the northeast trending BRS conductor
This suspected structure sits along favorable MT conductivity
and we look forward to upgrading the BRS conductor to the drilling stage as well with ground EM surveying."

MINTO – The Minto 81’s are heading to the national Allan Cup after winning the J.F
Paxton AA Championships again in the Ontario Elite Hockey League (OEHL)
The 81’s downed Ripley in four straight games last month to earn their berth in the Allan Cup
marking the first time an OEHL club will be able to compete for the championship
The tournament is set for April 20 to 26 in Waterdown and is hosted by the Wentworth Gryphins
including a number of players from the Listowel Cyclones and Wingham Ironmen
Coach Ryan Fisk is excited to take the team to the championships and has been prominent in local hockey circles for over 25 years
having grown up in Harriston and played for Junior teams in Mount Forest and Brussels
He also played in Palmerston for both junior- and senior-level teams before he started coaching
sweeping the Tavistock Royals in four games
OEHL teams didn’t proceed to the Allan Cup
“There’s a lot of confidence in the dressing room,” he said
the best recruiters you have are the other players,” he said
we have great leadership with the players we have in that room
Everyone is checking their ego at the door and ready to play.”
Fisk says its nice to coach and be part of a group that isn’t interested in personal glory as much as winning as a team
Fisk said he looks forward to proving that the senior hockey in the OEHL is worth watching
“I’d like to see our team and our league get more exposure,” he said
Fisk said the league is cleaner than previous Senior A leagues
and is more about skill than physical play
saying he now plays with people who have to get to work the next day
when not long ago he was playing for Junior teams
“There’s a lot of youthful energy in these teams.”
He said there is a pride in changing the calibre and kind of hockey that’s being played in the senior leagues
looking at that focus on skill instead of physical play
and that comes with having a younger squad
as he has recruited a lot of younger players he has previously shared the ice with
Having previously played for championship-winning teams
Warren had a lot of connections to bring players into the fold
He played in the Greater Ontario Hockey League
the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) league with Queens University
and has won a number of championships across those experiences
When he was convinced to come back and play for the 81’s
Warren reached out to friends from every level he had played at and brought them to join
He is excited for the back-to-back wins the 81’s have earned at the OEHL level
and is looking forward to participating in the historic tournament that is the Allen Cup
He wants to show what Listowel and Minto hockey is all about now
as Warren says there will be a lot of ex-pro players there
“We’re going to turn a lot of heads,” he said
“I haven’t looked too much into the rosters of the other teams,” he said
“We’re expecting good players and good teams
but I’m confident we can compete there as well.”
having last played OUA-level hockey at Wilfrid Laurier University two years ago before taking a year off when he was accepted to chiropractic college
He was named assistant captain in his first year
which was an unexpected surprise and an honour
and he looks forward to wearing his jersey with the A in the Allan Cup tournament
as he played there from when he was 16 years old
Herrfort said he’s looking forward to the tournament because the team’s goal was to make it to the tournament
but we have the pieces to make a run at it,” he said
“Everyone who joined the team this year knew we had talent coming
it was just a matter of putting it together and building that chemistry
I’m surprised at how easily we came together despite many of us not knowing each other before this.”
another member of the team who is looking forward to taking the ice at the Allan Cup
told Midwestern Newspapers that being a part of the squad is a family affair for him
was among the first to bring Senior A hockey to the area
being a general manager of the Palmertston/Minto teams
so Butchart is happy to be part of the team and carry on that tradition
“I remember being six years old and standing at the ice watching the team run on the ice,” he said
“To come back and be a part of that is something special.”
he played for teams across the area including minor hockey in Minto
where he studied sports management before coming home to manage the Hanover Barons
Butchart said the team is going to put on a show at the tournament
not only do they have what it takes to be there
but that they have what it takes to win and show everyone the level of hockey being played in the OEHL
is more than just scoring goals and beating opponents
as it has been an organization-wide effort that resulted in the successful season
The 81’s are up against some stiff competition this year
including the Dundas Real McCoys who took the cup last year
Minto will be in division two at the tournament and face off against St
John’s Rooftech Capitals on April 21 in the 81’s first game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m
Game two for Minto is against the Wentworth Gryphons on April 22
the second- and third-place teams from each division will face off across division lines in the quarter-finals before the semi-finals will see the winners from the quarter-finals face off against the division-leader from the other division
The games will be available to stream on CHCH through parrot.tv

There probably weren’t a lot of people outside of the Nebraska program that had Christopher Minto going into Big Tens with an 18-2 record on their bingo card to start the season
But that’s exactly what the young Husker from Florida has done after forcing his way into the Nebraska lineup at 165 pounds in January
Nebraska’s Redshirt of the Year last season
Minto sits at #13 in our latest DI rankings
started the season sitting behind senior Bubba Wilson after losing a wrestle-off to him in overtime in November
Minto built up a 12-0 record in open tournaments in the first semester – the two Huskers each made it to the final of the Navy Classic but weren’t able to wrestle due to an injury to Wilson
Minto beat #18 Tyler Lillard 12-1 by major on the way to the final
“We had thought that Bubba had earned the spot early on — he had beat (Minto) in a wrestle-off in November,” Nebraska coach Mark Manning said on Tuesday
but him and Bubba just weren’t able to hit because Bubba got banged up in his semifinal match
but that might have helped Christopher in the long run from the development standpoint
He could figure it out for a couple more months until we actually had wrestle-offs.”
The battle between Minto and Wilson was just that — a battle
Minto prevailed the second time in January
so I think that we just had two good guys there
and it’s a shame we couldn’t use both of them,” Manning said
“Christopher really rose up to the challenge of being challenged and having to go through basically an All-American-caliber type of guy to make the team — that’s impressive in itself
Wilson has since moved on to the next chapter in his career — he’s signed to fight in May at Dynasty Combat Sports’ Spring Brawl 2025 at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln
After Wilson suffered a knee injury in late December that kept him out for a few weeks
Minto got his first shot in the starting lineup
Things started a bit shaky with a 4-1 sudden-victory loss to #19 Jack Thomsen of UNI
but he’s now 6-1 in Big Ten duals since with his only loss a 5-1 decision to #2 Michael Caliendo in Carver
Caliendo is 7-1 in Big Ten duals this year with his six other conference wins coming with bonus points — five being technical falls
there was a lot to learn from that match as they gear up for a possible rematch in the Big Ten semifinal – it’s all but certain that Caliendo gets the 2-seed and Minto the 3-seed at Big Tens
but there were a couple opportunities that he could have really taken advantage of — just quicker recognition,” Manning said
and it’s one of those things you learn from
I thought he did a good job of managing the match from an emotional and anxiety standpoint
He was really calm and wrestled well in front of a hostile environment
I think that shows the resilience of our team
and I think Christopher saw his teammates take that attitude and he took that attitude.”
he’s confident he can improve in the necessary areas after not fully trusting things in the first match — as Manning said
“A lot of those positions I was in in that match I’ve felt in practice
and I believe in them more when I’m in practice,” Minto said
“I know that as I believe in it in practice
I can really get the job done when I wrestle him again.”
A three-time NHSCA state champion for Mariner High School
He chose Nebraska over Virginia coming out in 2023
his development since getting on campus has been rapid
“I’ve just seen a lot of growth over the spring and summer last year
He’s a really hard worker and his development is through the roof,” Manning said
“He just picked up by being around other good guys
He’s really benefited from a lot of good people that have been around him and took advantage in the spring and summer
Sometimes freshmen are just trying to figure things out
He’s just trying to soak in everything he can from this Husker coaching staff
“I think my belief has grown a lot this season
“I think I just keep listening to them every day
and I think that’s where I’ve really grown the most is just listening to them and just trusting their process.”
Minto has a number of ranked wins already — 7-2 over #14 Beau Mantanona
it’s obvious that Minto’s been developing rapidly
He went from losing his first dual to winning his next three matches by decision
His last three wins have come with bonus points attached
including a 17-1 tech over Purdue’s Stoney Buell last time out
Minto has 13 bonus-point wins with eight of them techs
The two main factors in his rapid rise have been the quality of his training partners and his love for the sport
he didn’t win eight state titles.’ Some guys lose their love for it
“Everyone in the room wants to get better,” Minto said
a lot of the kids are there just to have something to do
so having them to push me really helps a lot.”
“(The coaches) kept preaching that you’re never too young to win,” Minto said
but also there are other kids at other Big Ten schools that are winning at this high level.”
Minto seems hungry and ready to make his mark
“This is the closest I’ve ever been to my dreams
so I’m really excited to just show the world.”
In a season that has seen multiple teams marred by injury
the Huskers have been one of the healthiest out there with all 10 starters seemingly healthy going into the postseason
None have missed much time due to injury all season
a lot of it comes down to what you focus on as a coaching staff
“I think it’s emphasized from the standpoint that you can’t be your best team if you got guys banged up
and you get them banged up when you don’t take care of the little things,” Manning said
you don’t care who you’re gonna go with that day
You’re not gonna win a national title in there
and ripping his knee out doesn’t do you any good there and doesn’t do our team any good.”
he’s not letting the entire cat out of the bag here
I’ve told my staff that the number one thing that can beat us is if our guys are all banged up,” Manning said
“I ain’t gonna give away every secret — I don’t want to tell the whole damn wrestling world.”
Since losing to #1 Penn State 31-7 in January
Their lone loss came in Carver-Hawkeye Arena
where they led the Hawkeyes the entire dual
Nebraska has not allowed more than seven dual points and hasn’t scored less than 35
turning up the emphasis on going for bonus points
“(We’re) just really amping up the intensity of what we do
trying to take that to another level and amping up the intensity and amping up the competitor within,” Manning said
you’re going to bow down to the competitors
Therein itself already gets the excitement going
staying focused on what you need to do is more important than ‘Oh
it’s different than what we just went through and it’s different than Vegas.’ It’s the same damn thing — there’s a wrestling match and a ref and seven minutes
you don't have the performance that you want.”

She added “queer people don’t just live in the city
“If people want to be more a part of the planning side of things we would love to hear their interest on that
“Volunteering in your community is so important … if the volunteer work we have available doesn’t speak to people I would just encourage people to get out and find any volunteer groups in your area.”
Krul emphasized the need for local volunteers
“A lot of volunteers are starting to age out and it’s a lot of work for these folks that have been in these volunteer positions for a long time,” she explained

MINTO – Two municipalities in Wellington County have been selected to receive “strong mayor powers” and some Minto councillors feel “highly insulted” and concerned by the move
The province announced on April 9 the proposed powers were to be received by 169 additional municipalities in Ontario that have six or more councillors
the move would affect Minto and Centre Wellington
“strong mayors” have the power to set budgets
rearrange municipal departments and change bylaws
Provincial officials say the purpose of expanding strong mayor powers – currently 47 municipalities have them – is to help deliver on priorities such as building homes
“It’s not a necessary action and it’s actually fairly insulting to both the people who take the time and effort out of their lives and schedules to sit on council
and the staff that are working behind us,” deputy mayor Jean Anderson stated at an April 22 Minto council meeting
“The message seems to be that we’re not building quickly enough to suit the Ontario government
“We would build quicker perhaps if they funded us better.”
Anderson added the town has been asking the province for an increase in its base funding for “years and years and years.”
“The shovels aren’t hitting the ground because it’s not financially feasible anymore,” she said
She also questioned the logic behind giving the powers to mayors on councils with six-plus members
Councillor Geoff Gunson suggested asking staff to bring a report back to council at a later date to help council understand the decision
“The parameters are pretty clear; they want to endorse one person to be able to advance building if they don’t feel we’re meeting the goals that they have set,” Anderson replied
She agreed the town should seek more information
but said she is unsure the “best way to get it.”
Councillor Paul Zimmerman said the province’s move to expand strong mayor powers doesn’t bode well for democracy
“It’s pretty alarming the amount of municipalities that are flatly refusing this,” he said
Zimmerman noted there is potential for corruption with “a little pay in the back pocket to fast-track building of some sort.”
“We know right now from down south of the border what one person in charge is capable of doing and I don’t ever want to see that in our country,” Zimmerman stated
Councillor Judy Dirksen said despite the impact on Minto
she feels “pretty confident” not a whole lot would change “because that’s the kind of guy Mayor [Dave] Turton is.”
“We have a great council here and I think we have a great mayor here,” she said
“I have never put the term rebel and Mayor Turton in the same sentence.”
Dirksen agreed with her colleagues that there is a need to spend more time understanding the powers
“I believe we should be positive and grateful to our provincial leadership for allowing Minto to be a part of this expanded list of municipalities
council and staff will need time to review the legislation and see how this new tool may impact our municipality.”
Minto council passed a motion for staff to bring a report back to council at a later date

City staff confirmed Friday the presence of a male cougar at Salem's Minto-Brown Island Park conservation area along the Willamette River
The confirmed sighting follows a series of unconfirmed cougar sightings in the area
A staff member reported another suspected sighting while picking up debris along the river on Thursday
Wildlife experts urge park users to be aware and use caution
City staff said the Minto-Brown reserve is a natural habitat for cougars
“He is actively using the game trails,” said Matthew Johnston
Cougars are native to Oregon and are found throughout the state
The 1,200-acre park is one of the most popular spots in Salem. Larger than Central Park in New York City, Minto-Brown Island is home to 29 miles of trail and a 30-acre off-leash dog park
Johnston urged caution at dawn and dusk when cougars are most active
The park is closed to the public after dark
The majority of sightings have occurred after dark
City officials said they are keeping an eye on the situation and consulting with experts at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife
Cougar sightings in Minto-Brown can be reported to ODFW’s South Willamette Watershed District office at 541-757-4186
People are advised to call 911 in emergency situations
