this historic villa features an opulent modern extension with luxury living spaces
when Andrea and Darren Hoppe purchased their circa-1880 villa – affectionately known as “Ashleigh House” – there was no modern renovation
It was the historic charm of the Victorian villa that enchanted Andrea when she first stepped into the property
I loved the feel and the presence of the original house,” says Andrea
“Not knowing what council would want from an extension
I didn’t have my heart set on whether it was something that was going to be totally modern or whether it would have to be something that’s kept in the same style or era.”
Andrea says the location was a key drawcard
being close to schools and just a six-kilometre drive from the Adelaide CBD
there was the grand size of the 5000-square-metre block
The previous owner ran an animal sanctuary on the property
but her animal welfare efforts meant she had little time to spend on the garden
before Andrea and Darren could move in in 2014
one of the first things they did was to re-landscape
They also built a breathtaking contemporary extension designed by Section Six Architects (formerly Alexander Brown Architects)
with floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out onto a heated swimming pool
a full-size tennis court and expansive lawns
in line with the Burra Charter heritage procedures
required them to build a modern-looking extension that would be distinguished from the Victorian home
“I spent a lot of time on Pinterest trying to find something that I loved
and I kept getting drawn to the glass pavilion because it made the original house the feature,” says Andrea
Andrea says that because the house is heritage-listed
there was not much they could do to the exterior apart from replacing the verandah’s 1970s terracotta tiles with mosaic tiling
Andrea and Darren have reconfigured the layout
knocking out walls to make the space feel more open
it was a matter of knocking out those little walls and building substantial rooms,” says Andrea
They also built en-suites in each of the four bedrooms
A priority was to take advantage of the great views from the home
“Because of the outlook to the expansive gardens and the Hills
the main thing was having lots of light and big windows,” says Andrea
that followed through the idea of the glass pavilion; you can basically see all the way through the house
Other highlights of the home include a 14-seat home theatre with a 120-inch screen and Paradigm sound system
and a climate-controlled wine cellar with a glass wall
Andrea says landscaping was challenging because of the property’s size
tennis court and basketball court were must-haves
“It was about keeping the vegetation and the heritage trees and putting in the court
pool and grass so the kids can kick a football without having to go to an oval,” says Andrea
They also installed an outdoor kitchen and dining area
Andrea tells SALIFE that her favourite feature of the home is the master bedroom
“I love waking up and looking at the view in the master bedroom,” she says
But after around a decade of calling Ashleigh House home
Andrea and Darren have decided now is the right time to downsize
Andrea says she will miss the space and the lifestyle the most

Mitcham and Park Orchards are both chasing not only the Division One premiership but a return to the top division of the EFNL
the side is attempting to win consecutive senior premierships for the first time since the Tigers three-peat in 1979 to 1981
A proud club with a rich history in the league
The Tigers are searching premiership number 18 and a return to the topflight of the EFNL for the first time since 2006
Mitcham take on the Sharks who were the more dominant side during the Home and Away season with a record of 17-1
A win today would mark a very quick stop in Division One on their way back to Premier Division level as well as their second-ever premiership in the EFNL
Michael Prosenak has been the driving force to Park Orchards success in 2024
An average of 20 disposals and 2 goals per game
the side has missed his presence in the Sharks first two finals
The side have had to compete this finals series without their skipper
Prosenak missing the last Home and Away game for the season as well as their first two finals against Mitcham and Beaconsfield
It’ll be a gigantic boost to the side’s chances on Saturday if he is cleared to play
A real highlight for the season has been the strong consistency from Jaye Witnish
With the season on the line in the Preliminary Final
Witnish finished with three majors and played an integral part in the Sharks eight-point win
They’ll be eager to get another chance to take on Mitcham after a disappointing final term against the Tigers in the second-semi final which saw Park Orchards concede eight goals to zero
The Tigers brand of footy has stacked up well in September over the last few seasons
Their pressure and contested work have been first class at Tormore Reserve and if the weather turns ugly
Co-Captain Jesse Uren is having a career best season
The return of Josh May from VFL duties has also enhanced the defensive line-up
one of the Tigers best throughout the finals series
Both sides are desperate for a return to Premier Division
While it’s been a long time for the Tigers
the Sharks have only recently dropped to Division One after their promotion in 2021
The Sharks first loss of the season came at the hands of the Tigers in Round Nine this year at Walker Park
It was all set up with a seven-goal to zip first term
Mitcham dominated the clearance battle and perfected the wet weather conditions as they held the Sharks goalless for the first-half
Skipper Jesse Uren and last year’s Blue Ribbon Medalist Jesse Cherry were outstanding in the contest
Round Eighteen: Park Orchards 12.18 90 def
The Sharks returned the favour in the final round of the Home and Away season
holding Mitcham to just two goals for the afternoon
With the first week of the finals already locked in
Jacob Price-Inglis managed to lock down Mitcham’s most dangerous player while having 25 disposals and a goal himself
In the tough blustery conditions out at Tormore Reserve
Mitcham pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory in the final term
Trailing by four goals at Three Quarter Time
the Tigers kicked eight final quarter goals while keeping the Sharks goalless in the final 30 minutes of the contest to win by 28-points
Jake Parente kicked four for the Tigers while Jesse Smyth celebrated his milestone game with a last-quarter goal
A dominant performance from Danny Baglava in the ruck summed up his impressive season to date
The win saw Mitcham qualify for this weekend’s Grand Final first and also marked the Tigers fifth finals win in a row at Tormore Reserve

A Mitcham home in a country-like setting offers an enviable lifestyle and has been a fantastic place to raise a family for these vendors of more than 40 years
Tom and Marg Wilkinson bought the 4143sqm 27 Carrick Hill Drive property in 1983
“It was built in 1840 and was one of the first houses in Mitcham and it’s on an acre
and when I first saw it I thought it was pretty special and I just loved it from the moment I saw it,” Mr Wilkinson says

“It’s like living in the country because it’s surrounded by huge trees
and it’s really quiet despite the fact that we’re 12 minutes from the city
“We bought it from the man that owned John Martin’s
which was good but we wanted to modernise it
“We employed the services of Pauline Hurren and she copied elements of the Governor’s residence in the Belair National Park and framed the whole place
opened it up and really enhanced it and made it really liveable.”
The stunning facade of the 1840-built 27 Carrick Hill Dr
and my wife’s a really keen gardener – we’ve participated in Open Gardens South Australia – so we changed that to a Mediterranean garden to better suit the climate,” he says

Some of the home’s Mediterranean-style gardens
“I then put the tennis court in and the pool in
and it was a fantastic place for our three kids
18ths and 21sts there and got married there
so it has always been a bit of a party house
“The tennis court is down in the valley and
you’ve got these beautiful gumtrees over top and you’d have koalas looking down at you as you play tennis – it’s really special
“People find it hard to believe it’s just an acre because it blends so well into its surroundings
because we’re right opposite Carrick Hill which is 150 acres of bushland.”
Tennis time will bring out the local koalas
With the couple getting older and not needing a property of its size
Mr Wilkinson says the time has come to downsize
and I would love to see that happen all over again and next family stay here for another 41 years and have all of their birthdays and weddings here – that would be lovely,” he says

This new gin label is listed at some of Melbourne’s most talked-about restaurants but there’s nothing like drinking it at the source: a cavernous, cosied-up warehouse on a busy thoroughfare. As with his beer brand Two Rupees, founder Danny Perera has infused his Sri Lankan heritage into Dutch Rules, making spiced gins that come as tasting flights or in punchy cocktails such as a passionfruit sorbet-spiked Bellini.

Merton Council has named Charles Holland Architects the winner of its competition for a ‘bold and striking’ new £90,000 temporary bandstand in Mitcham
The winning multidisciplinary team will now work with local people to co-design and then deliver a new temporary and re-usable bandstand for Mitcham Town Centre that will be used from July to September for the next three years
Charles Holland Architects – working with fabricator Raskl – was chosen ahead of an undisclosed shortlist of rival teams to win the commission
The project aims to boost footfall by drawing on the history of an earlier bandstand that was constructed in the 1920s on the Fair Green in Mitcham Town Centre but was removed in the mid-20th century
The completed bandstand will be called ‘What Goes Around’
a reference to its use of recycled materials as well as the return of a bandstand to the area after 100 years
councillor and cabinet member for civic pride and climate change Eleanor Stringer said: ‘The new bandstand will be a celebration of Mitcham’s history and heritage as well as its future
‘Mitcham’s community is so proud of this area and wants to see improvements made
The new bandstand will be at the heart of Fair Green
and is one of many ways we are revitalising the area – bringing it to life for everyone who lives
‘We’re delighted to be working with Charles Holland Architects
who will reach out to the community to involve them in this exciting project.’
The latest project aims to deliver a new ‘bold and striking’ temporary bandstand structure on Fair Green in the centre of Mitcham
robust and safe’ structure is expected to be freestanding with no permanent fixtures made to the ground
Charles Holland Architects practice principal Charles Holland said: ‘This is a lovely project to be involved in
something that we hope will add an important element of fun and spontaneity to Mitcham Fair Green
‘We are very happy to be working with the team at Merton Council
and the people of Mitcham in developing What Goes Around.’

It’s been almost two years since Matthew Mitcham started his side hustle as an Onlyfans model
now the trend is taking off with many current Olympic competitors
In a column published by The Telegraph the former Australian Olympic champion opens up about his decision and defends the new wave of athletes following his pathway
As the Paris Olympics kicked off this week the competiton has recieved plenty of attention both on and off the playing field
After the opening ceremony got tongues wagging world wide attention turned to the competition
Only a few days into the competiton British diver Tom Daley took out his fifth Olympic medal
but many members of the Great Britain diving team were catching plenty of attention elsewhere
Five of the current and former team have taken up the popular side hustle as Onlyfans models
Daniel Goodfellow and Mathew Dixon have all taken to the platform garnering plenty of attention
With much attention drawn to the work of these athletes former Olmpic champion Matthew Mitcham has stepped in to defend them
who came out as gay ahead of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and made history as the first out gay man to win an individual Olympic gold medal
In 2023 he opened up about joining the platform, even revealing that he sells his old underwear to fans
It feels like people like to shame athletes who show off their bodies” he wrote in this column for The Telegraph
pic.twitter.com/f5cqdVj98B
— Matthew Mitcham (@matthew_mitcham) August 20, 2023
But he is adamant the platform is a worthwhile and viable option for earning extra money for current and former athletes
“It’s a useful way of supplementing income” he said
“After all the hours and sacrifice we’ve put in
we athletes have more than earned the odd side-hustle.”
For Mitcham it has become more than just a side hustle he reveals
“Since I retired from diving in 2016
I am doing corporate speaking and have worked in a few other roles
but the money I’m collecting from OnlyFans helps me get by.”
Reflecting on his earnings as an athlete and that of those in the industry he reveals there isn’t as much money in the sport as it may seem
“My personal earnings as an athlete dipped and climbed unpredictably”
“Funding was based entirely on how you performed at the benchmark event of the previous year
whether that be the Olympics or World Championships
and if you didn’t compete because of injury
then things could get very difficult.”
When facing criticism about his choice he maintains it is just that
“I’ve invested a lot of time and effort in my body
some might ask “Why give it away at all?” But my answer to that would be ‘my body
Like many of the other athletes Matthew Mitcham maintains he’s not doing anything pornographic
although his content has become increasingly more risque in recent months
“I still haven’t shown any full-frontal nudity on my page” he maintains
my personal philosophy around it is “If I can defend this as artistic rather than obscene then I will share it.” Because when it crosses the line into pornography
and it would almost certainly start to impact my mainstream opportunities.”
But Mitcham maintains that despite the stigma
it’s all about choice and how comfortable you are putting yourself out there
“I admit that there is a stigma attached to modelling on OnlyFans
and you have to weigh it up carefully.”
you can play safe and stay within the system
or you can decide to be a maverick – one of those people who steps outside the system and changes it.”

The Netherlands is championed for creating the first gin
And the UK is known for popularising the spirit — especially London dry gin
Malaysia and other spice islands hasn't made it to the mainstream
This is something the Owner and Founder of Dutch Rules Distilling Co
Danny Perera is working hard to change at his distillery door and bar that opened in March 2024
he's distilling gins and making cocktails that hero the complex flavours of juniper
cardamom and coriander from a broad range of spice islands
Apart from strongly featuring these main spices (that were historically transported back to Europe by the East India Company)
his gin range is also enhanced with botanicals like lemongrass
Dutch Rules gins have won a handful of awards
and Perera has been praised for broadening the scope of what gins can taste like
You can sample the goods in tasting flights and cocktails at the distillery door
where bottles are also available to purchase
a small selection of bar snacks is also available — sardines with bread
fresh oysters and charcuterie — but Perera is working to expand the food offerings
To that end, he brought on Dan Greenwood (ex-Naked for Satan) to establish a new kitchen and dining menu, but this won't be up and running until the end of 2024. Check the venue's website for updates

Olympians Robbie Manson & Matthew Mitcham tease epic OnlyFans collab
"What happens when two OF creators cross paths at the Olympics
COLLAB!" the Olympic athletes wrote in a post
Besides being gay athletes who have competed at the Olympics
both Mitcham and Manson maintain active pages on OnlyFans
the infamous subscription-based content service that content creators often use to share their spicier wares to their most loyal followers
Well, it seems like the time has come for Manson and Mitcham to give us an OnlyFans collab of Olympic proportions! Mitcham shared a picture on Instagram — using audio from Charli XCX's "Guess" remix featuring Billie Eilish — and wrote:
openly gay rower from New Zealand [heart emoji]."
both athletes also shared public posts teasing this upcoming collaboration and providing some context as to how they met
Manson wrote in an OF post from Tuesday
"The last time we met it was in the Olympic Village in London
It was great to catch up with @matthewmitcham again and do a cheeky collab
That same day, Mitcham wrote on his OF page:
I met openly gay NZ rower @robbie_manson at Pride House when we were in Paris last week
Do you want to see the other shots from the series?"
The gays are VERY excited for the Olympic athleticism we're about to witness
The rowing and diving that Manson and Mitcham are about to give us — truly unparalleled
Now, if only someone could convince a certain French pole vaulter to check if he's gotten any emails from a website called CamSoda… I mean
You can subscribe to Matthew Mitcham's OnlyFans and/or Robbie Manson's OnlyFans while waiting for their Olympic-level collaboration to be released

A cafe has sparked outrage over the incredible prices its charging for its meals with smashed avocado on toast costing $27.90
The Mitcham cafe, in Melbourne's east, raised eyebrows over the menu stuck to its window with a customer sharing a photo to Reddit.
Its 'Smashed Avo' comes with two poached eggs, crumbled feta, pumpkin hummus, melody tomatoes, roasted seed mix, lightly toasted sourdough bread and a lemon wedge.
The traditionally larger meals on the menu were cheaper such as the fish and chips, which was $1 less expensive and priced at $26.90.
The customer could not get over the exorbitant price and questioned why smashed avocado cost more.
'Not here to name and shame a local business, but when did the humble smashed avo on toast cost more than fish and chips? Is this the norm elsewhere?' they wrote.
'I nearly fell off my chair paying $5.89 for a medium coffee in Mitcham.'
The smashed avocado meal wasn't even the most expensive item on the menu with a calamari salad costing $32.90 while an open steak sandwich cost $35.90.
Other pricey items on the menu included eggs benedict that cost $22.90 and cost $6 extra for salmon, $4 more for bacon and an extra $2 for spinach.
A bacon and egg roll set customers back $18.90 and a brunch burger was on the menu for $25.90.
Social media users were quick to blast the sky-high prices of the food listed on the menu.
'Eating out has become insane,' one wrote.
'I’m lucky I work in an industrial estate where a roast beef and salad roll is $10 and even comes with a hand full of of chips if you eat in.'
'It’s like they’re taking advantage of Millennial/Gen Z’s over reliance on UberEats and lack of cooking skills. Fight the system and make stuff yourself,' one said.
Another added: 'The price of these basic brunch food is the reason I stopped going to brunch. It just needs to be unique otherwise I’ll just make my own avo on toast for 1/5 of the price.'
'At least it includes two eggs. Most places still charge $20 something and they make you pay extra for a single poached egg,' one person wrote.
A second added: 'As soon as I saw there was two poached eggs I thought to myself that it's "alright".
'A place near me charges $22 dollars. If you want eggs you need to pay an extra $7. At the end of the day, it's just pricy everywhere.'
A third Aussie wrote: 'Not actually that bad given a lot of places charge $25 with no poached eggs'.
But other Aussies saw it as a sign that the cafe was probably just 'holding on' and could be struggling financially.
'For the most part, you’re not paying for the food (partly); you’re paying for their rent, electricity/gas bills, and their workers,' one wrote.
'This is inflation, this is what it looks like. I don’t work in this industry but all their costs are up, rent, supplies, utilities etc.,' one said.
Another cafe owner added: 'You can buy a distressed cafe business for $12 and a bag of chips at the minute, they’re going broke left and right.'
'This poor b***ard is probably having daily panic attacks because he knows no one/far fewer people will want to buy his product at that price, but if the alternative is going under, what is he supposed to do?'

Her drawings as a child may have started out as smiley heads with legs
17-year-old Ruby Mitcham became the youngest ever artist to feature in the Society of Scottish Artists’ prestigious national art exhibition
which since it was founded in 1891 has shown the work of painters like Edvard Munch and Picasso
Despite only having oil painted for two years
Ruby is already regarded as one of the most talented young artists in the UK
She paints from an easel in her bedroom at Gordonstoun School where she is on a two year art scholarship
A stunning portrait of Ruby’s best friend and roommate Iona Watters
was selected for the exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh
‘I felt lost for words when I found out one of my paintings would be in the RSA,’ Ruby said
It’s so grand and imposing from the outside and full of world-famous paintings
‘I walk by it regularly and now I have to pinch myself and remind myself that my art was on display there
For A Scottish Lass Iona was the only one willing to sit for me
as she’s a beautiful dancer and has a serenity and strength about her
I wanted that all to come across in the painting.’
Her earliest memories of art are of ceramic painting
or painting on rocks and making things out of clay and plasticine
‘My mum recently looked out some of my early drawings,’ Ruby says
‘My first attempts at people were pretty much smiley heads with legs coming out of them… Minimalist
‘I have always really enjoyed making things
In my first school we were so lucky to have a great art department that pretty much let us experiment with clay
‘I once made a whole outfit for myself out of neon green paper and wore it
I taught myself crochet and I’ve recently been making things from wood.’
her art began to flourish two years ago when she discovered oil painting
‘I actually really surprised myself that I could paint
it’s like going to my happy place,’ she said
They’re my favourite medium and I find it hard to experiment with others
I didn’t even know I had to mix them with oil or whether to use brushes or a palette knife…Thank you
but now I look back and see all the things I hadn’t quite learnt then.’
‘He is really an inspiration to me,’ she said
‘At 81 he is still living life to the full
‘His whole life has been packed with outrageous activities and this was just a rare quiet moment he had the year he broke his back.’
Ruby often trawls through her photographs for inspiration when she is trying to decide what to paint
which she says can often be the most frustrating part
She sometimes uses grids to sketch out the image but can also do it freehand
but try to also stand frequently to get that perspective and see the painting at the height it’ll most likely be viewed
‘I work with a palette and a little linseed oil
but I also use a bright daylight bulb with no lampshade
podcasts or tv and if I’ve been on my own for too long
I’ll encourage one of my family to chat while I work
I was just so delighted that I’d found something I loved doing
‘I can paint happily for a whole day and then get up the next day and continue
I couldn’t imagine having a job that would excite me
‘I can’t imagine not having art in my future
as long as I’m able to continue making things
