A copper butterfly statue was announced for Montmorency station as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project in 2022.
But residents in the area are upset that the statue has instead been installed at Eltham train station.
Local Andrew Tupper joined Sammy J on ABC Radio Melbourne to describe a cardboard sculpture that has be put up in Montmorency in the interim.
A plint and lighting had been installed at Montmorency for the statue so an unnamed resident decided to put a cardboard artwork of a butterly at the location in the interim. November 21, 2024.(Supplied: Andrew Tupper)

New walking and cycling path under the Sherbourne Road bridge, Montmorency. Artist impression only, subject to change.
The second stage of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication delivers further improvements for Melbourne’s north east, including more train services, less crowding on peak trains and better connections to public transport.
As part of the project, we've built 2 new stations at Greensborough and Montmorency and upgraded Diamond Creek Station. Works also included duplicating 2km of rail track between Greensborough and Montmorency stations and 1.5km between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen to allow more trains to run more often.
We are also building a new walking and cycling path between Greensborough and Montmorency stations. The 2km path will provide better community connections as well as safe and easy access between Greensborough and Montmorency stations, linking with the Plenty River Trail and station forecourts.
Two sections of the path were completed in late 2023, with works on the remaining middle section of path to begin in mid-2024 and completed by early 2025. In addition, the Department of Transport and Planning has started planning for stage 2 of the shared use path between Montmorency and Eltham.
As part of the project, Railway Road between Gladstone Road and Para Road will become a south-bound one-way street, allowing drivers to turn both right and left into Para Road.
This will make the intersection at Para Road and Railway Road safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
Motorists will have the time and space to give way to people walking and cycling on the new path.
We’ll also build a new footpath connecting Railway Road to the new walking and cycling path, providing safe access from Briar Hill to Greensborough Station, Plenty River Trail, Montmorency and beyond.
While entry from Para Road into Railway Road will not be possible, vehicles may enter Railway Road via Sherbourne and Williams roads, with a maximum detour time of 4 minutes.
Once the walking and cycling path is complete, we’ll finish landscaping and planting along the path. Landscaping will include a combination of native trees, flowering plants, shrubs and grasses to complement the character of the local area.
We’ll use a highly diverse mix of species, including plants typical of local eucalypt woodlands, the Plenty River Valley, and bush gardens and parks of the area.
This will create a bush landscape character as well as a native plant corridor for local birds and wildlife.

Sammy J has pledged to have a statue of the Eltham Copper Butterfly returned to its promised location in Montmorency, after locals revealed it had instead been installed in neighbouring Eltham.
He has written a song to the Level Crossing Removal Project encouraging them to reverse their decision.
Artist of the sculpture Robert Bridgewater says he designed the sculpture specifically for the Montmorency location.
“I made it clear to the commissioners that it was a disappointing outcome and I wasn't overly happy with it.”

MONTMORENCY COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — One week after a devastating ice storm, thousands of residents in Montmorency County remain without power, struggling to access basic necessities.
Despite the ice melting, the storm's impact lingers, leaving nearly 6,000 homes waiting for electricity to be restored, according to Presque Isle Energy.
Forrest Van Pelt, a disabled veteran, is sheltering at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with his wife, Emily, and their 1-month-old son, Dutch.
"We have a house, but we have no power, no water, no heat, and so we’ve been staying here at the shelter for the past few days," Van Pelt said. "I tried to take my family down to Rose City, where there was power, and we stayed in a hotel for four days. That gets expensive real quick."
Local businesses have stepped up to assist those in need.
Tyler Smith, owner of Talley’s Log Cabin, highlighted the community's efforts.
"We’ve gotten a couple pallets of water from the state. Everything else has been private: wipes, diapers, hand sanitizers, five-gallon buckets with lids to transport water, gas cans," Smith said.
He noted that the governor visited two days ago and expressed optimism about receiving more resources. "I’m now more confident that we’re going to get the resources we need," he said.
Smith does not expect power to be fully restored for another two weeks.
In the meantime, the bar and the church are crucial in supporting families like the Van Pelts.
Forrest Van Pelt shared his concerns, saying, "My family is pleading, ‘Hey, you should get your baby and your wife out of here, you don’t know when the power is coming back on and that’s not a place to bring your baby.’ I kind of feel like a failure, as far as that goes, but I’m trying to just make it work. Maybe the power will come back on tomorrow, and I can keep my wife and son with me."

Tart cherries possess properties that may reduce inflammation and improve glycemic control
however human data on supplementation and the gut microbiota is equivocal
frozen) may affect the properties of tart cherries
and therefore alter their efficacious health benefits
the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 30 days of supplementation with Montmorency tart cherry (MTC) in concentrate or freeze-dried form on the gut microbiome and markers of inflammation and glycemic control
Healthy participants with no known disease (n = 58
body mass: 72.2 ± 12.9 kg) were randomly allocated to four groups and consumed either concentrate or freeze-dried capsules or their corresponding placebos for 30 days
Venous blood samples were drawn at baseline
and 30 and analyzed for inflammatory markers TNF-alpha
and erythrocyte sedimentation rate and glycemic control markers glycated albumin
TNF-alpha was significantly lower at 30 vs
however there was no other significant change in the inflammatory markers
Insulin was not changed over time (p = 0.16) or between groups (p = 0.24)
nor was glycated albumin different over time (p = 0.08) or between groups (p = 0.56)
however glucose levels increased (p < 0.001) from baseline (4.79 ± 1.00 mmol·L−1) to 14 days (5.21 ± 1.02 mmol·L−1) and 30 days (5.61 ± 1.22 mmol·L−1) but this was no different between groups (p = 0.33)
There was no significant change in composition of bacterial phyla
or subfamilies for the duration of this study nor was there a change in species richness
These data suggest that 30 days of MTC supplementation does not modulate the gut microbiome
Clinical Trail Registration: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04467372
Clearly there are equivocal findings in the literature related to gut microbiome changes with MTC that need further exploration given the potential health impacts
results of polyphenol supplementation studies are equivocal and assessing different formulations is warranted
Given these equivocal findings on changes in inflammation and glucose regulation with MTC supplementation
the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 30 days of supplementing with MTC concentrate or freeze-dried powder on the gut microbiome
We hypothesized that the polyphenols in the MTC products would influence the gut microbiome composition
which would modulate changes in inflammatory markers and glucose regulation
Doses were in accordance with previous literature and to ensure similar levels of polyphenols and anthocyanins between formulations
Two capsules were taken at the same time of day rather than spread out for easier compliance
while it was 92% for placebo capsules and 94% for MTC capsules
Following the consent visit and prior to their baseline blood draw
participants completed a 12 month food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) that included portion sizes (Dietary History Questionnaire (DHQ) III
National Cancer Institute) to determine typical dietary patterns (i.e.
and fiber based on established dietary recommendations)
participants completed a 3 day food record for 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day
tracking food and beverage intake along with portion sizes
Participants recorded their data in Food Prodigy
a companion program to the Food Processor Nutrition Analysis software (ESHA Research)
Data from the 3 days was then exported from the Food Processor Nutrition Analysis program as an excel file for each participant
every 7 days during the course of the study participants completed an online survey regarding their exercise and dietary habits for the previous 7 days as well as the frequency of their intake of alcohol
and the top 100 polyphenol containing foods
Fecal samples were collected by participants into a toilet hat (Protocult 100
MN) and aliquoted into three Polypropylene microcentrifuge tubes that were free from DNase/RNase and pyrogens (Eppendorf™ Biopur®)
Samples were immediately frozen at −20°C until delivery to the laboratory where they were stored at −80°C
Samples were transported to the lab on ice (Utek
IL) in a thermal insulated tote (Hopkins Medical Products Caledonia
Reference range for CRP was 0.00–0.744 mg·dL−1 and 3.5 and 7.2 mg·dL−1 for males and females for UA
Different covariance structures were systematically fit to the data
and the one that minimized the Hurvich and Tsai's criterion was chosen for the final model
post-hoc comparisons with LSD-adjusted p-values were used to identify which pairs of means were significantly different
Normality and homogeneity of variance of the residuals were checked using Q-Q plots
Two-tailed statistical significance was accepted as p < 0.05
Observed taxonomic units (OTUs) for (A) Bacteroides
and (D) Proteobacteria at baseline and after 14 and 30 days of supplementation with placebo or Montmorency tart cherry (MTC)
Correlations between the gut microbiome and other variables were mostly weak
BMI was positively correlated with Lactobacillus OTUs (r = 0.21
relative abundance of Actinobacteria (r = 0.23
and relative abundance of Bacteroidetes (r = −0.25
Glucose levels were correlated with relative abundances of Bacteroidetes
Roseburia OTUs were correlated with CRP (r = 0.19
Inflammatory markers including erythrocyte sedimentation rate (A)
C-reactive protein (C) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (D) for each group at baseline and after 14 and 30 days of supplementation with placebo or Montmorency tart cherry (MTC) concentrate or capsules
Glucose regulation markers including glycated albumin (A)
and insulin (C) concentrations for each group at baseline and after 14 and 30 days of supplementation with placebo or Montmorency tart cherry (MTC) concentrate or capsules
Consumption of the top 100 polyphenol containing foods were tracked weekly
Total polyphenol consumption was 5,024 ± 4,599 for the MTC juice group
4,744 ± 2,387 for the MTC capsule group
2,519 ± 2,471 for the juice placebo group
and 3,424 ± 3,278 for the capsule placebo group and this was not significant between MTC formulations (X2 = 5.43
and nutrient intake of participants (n = 51) in the 3-day food log
The current study examined the effects of 30 days of supplementing with MTC concentrate or freeze-dried powder on gut microbiome composition
We hypothesized that the polyphenols in tart cherry products would influence the gut microbiome composition
we found no significant alterations in the gut microbiome
and no significant impact of MTC supplementation on inflammation or glucose regulation
When comparing pre-to post-intervention microbiota
the authors determined the need to divide participants into groups based on the baseline relative abundance of Bacteroides
ingestion of tart cherry juice resulted in a sharp decline in Bacteroides and an increase in Firmicutes (such as Ruminococcus
while the opposite was seen in the low Bacteroides group
with an increase in Bacteroides and decreases in Firmicutes (such as Streptococcus and Lachnospiraceae)
These changes may have been due to the underlying diets of the participants
as those in the low Bacteroides group consumed more carbohydrates
and fibers and the high polyphenol intake from the tart cherry juice resulted in increases in Bacteroides to facilitate breakdown of these polyphenols
When we divided our participants into groups based on high or low baseline levels of Bacteroides
we noted significantly higher Bacteroides in the high vs
low group at baseline and over the 30 days and no change in Firmicute levels
we did not find any significant differences or changes in the other bacteria phyla or species
even if the groups were divided by their baseline Bacteroides levels
suggesting the need for long term dietary intervention
future research should focus on detecting the sufficient time that bring the effective change in microbial composition from the intake of tart cherry supplementation
It is also interesting to note that dietary intake of our participants did not seem to be a determining factor in whether or not the MTC supplementation altered microbial diversity
Nearly 25% of our sample were considered to have high fat diets
While this likely determined whether a participant had high or low levels of Bacteroidetes at baseline
either the supplements did not provide enough of a stimulus for change
or the participant's dietary patterns were too influential to bring about change
This might indicate a need for greater changes in diet
to see significant alterations in gut microbiome composition
When inflammation is present in the body, red blood cells stick to one another and this results in greater sedimentation rates. While this is a non-specific marker of inflammation, it has been measured in two previous studies using tart cherry juice consumption (23, 36). While a 4 week intervention found a modest decline in ESR of 5% (23), another 4 week intervention actually found a 17% increase in ESR (36)
as interestingly we found an average 11% increase in ESR over the course of the study
and we did not find a significant difference in ESR between groups
The average values for ESR were well within the normal ranges for the test
indicating there was no measurable inflammation in our participants
which differs from the two previous studies
causing larger intra-individual variability (average CoV: 27%)
potentially due to exercise and acute inflammation and suggest this might not be a marker to measure changes in inflammation with tart cherry supplementation in the future in healthy populations
In the current study we also found a modest 2% decline in UA from baseline to 30 days
however there was no significant difference in UA between groups
the majority of the values for our participants were within the normal range
however there was large intra-individual variability (average CoV: 30%)
which likely played a role in the lack of significant findings
however because we did not measure melatonin content
we cannot be sure what caused TNF-α to increase in our study
the results of this study indicate MTC supplementation in either concentrate or freeze-dried powder has little impact on inflammation in apparently healthy participants
which may in part be due to a lack of sufficient inflammation in participants to observe any effect of the supplements
supplementation may improve insulin sensitivity
but this does not appear to translate to long-term benefits
Our findings show an elevation in glucose without a rise in insulin
which might indicate presence or development of insulin insensitivity
indeed 16 individuals (28%) had a fasting glucose >100 mg·dL−1 (but <126 mg·dL−1) at baseline and an additional 5 participants had elevated glucose levels from 7 days onward
the difference in sugar composition between the juice and capsule groups were significantly different (17.7 vs
however there was no significant difference between groups in blood glucose regulation
it appears unlikely the results are due to greater sugar intake from the supplements and further human intervention work with MTC supplements and blood glucose regulation are needed
The current study hypothesized that the polyphenols in MTC products would influence the gut microbiome composition
These results may partially be due to the use of a healthy population
who did not have inflammatory conditions and thus future work may need to focus on clinical populations
time point measurements for the gut microbiome may have missed changes in bacterial composition
therefore additional time course analysis with more frequent measurements may be necessary to see if MTC has any impact on gut microbial composition

We’d like to thank Montmorency Primary School and Montmorency Secondary College students who recently showed their commitment to their local area and the environment by digging deep at our community planting day at the new Montmorency Station
Under the guidance of environment team members from the Hurstbridge Line Duplication Project
students planted a diverse array of native and indigenous species
which supports the habitat for the Eltham Copper Butterfly
The group also learned about different trees and plants
as well as the importance of biodiversity and local ecosystems
we are planting more than 9000 trees and around 78,000 plants
flowering shrubs and grasses from Greensborough to Wattle Glen over the coming months
creating a bush environment and a native plant corridor for local birds and wildlife
Planting will be typical of local eucalypt woodlands
We have also installed a mix of nest boxes
hollow logs and flat packs along the rail line that will provide a home for local species while the new trees and plants mature and grow
The many local species native to the area include sugar gliders
we’ve built a new Montmorency Station and Greensborough Station
We’ve also duplicated 3.5km of track on the Hurstbridge Line
adding 39 additional services per week on the line

Thank you to Montmorency locals and the wider community for joining last week’s virtual ‘Meet the artists’ community session
for the proposed Montmorency Station precinct public artwork
To build on the identity of the new Montmorency Station precinct
we’ll be installing specially commissioned public artwork at the intersection of Station Road and Were Street
We’re working with four shortlisted artists
and experienced art curators on the proposed artwork
We’re asking you to let us know your preferences for design
for the artists to consider in their proposals
The artwork narrative will also incorporate previous community consultation
including a survey from October and November 2020
That survey identified the preferred themes of ‘bushland’ and ‘cultural and Indigenous heritage.’
We’re looking forward to hearing your thoughts and preferences for the proposed artwork
Locals were invited to join the project team
and ADA art consultants for a virtual session on the proposed public artwork
to gain a deeper understanding about the process of shortlisting artists
Attendees from the local community and art students from Montmorency Secondary College and Eltham High School heard from the artists about their artistic practice
narrative and vision for their proposed artworks
A range of thoughtful questions were pre-submitted for the artists
as well as live questions during the session
Themes included the artwork itself and what is envisaged for the area
how the artwork will be connected to Montmorency and its community
and questions about the art commissioning process
MI – A Michigan man accused of impersonating an emergency responder said he was “going to a call” when stopped by officers
The Department of Natural Resources said that Douglas Allen Smith
pleaded not guilty in the Montmorency County 88th District Court on April 11
Smith faces several charges including unlawful use of fire department/emergency medical services emblems
possessing a firearm in the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon
The charges stem from an incident that occurred when a conservation officer was patrolling in Albert Township on Feb
The officer was passed by what appeared to be a fire emergency vehicle
had the words “Search and Rescue” on the side
The vehicle was recklessly traveling at a high speed around cars and through intersections
red and white emergency lights are used for emergency vehicles
while only law enforcement vehicles display blue lights
The CO confirmed with Montmorency County Dispatch that there was not an active fire or EMS call in the county
Smith pulled into the parking lot of Lewiston Fun Ones
a closed venue located on County Road 489
“going to a call,” but it was called off
The CO verified that Smith was not affiliated with any emergency response agency in Michigan and located an uncased pistol in the vehicle
A report was submitted to prosecutors and Smith was arrested on March 21

(WPBN/WGTU) - - Possible healthcare cuts were a big topic at the Montmorency County commissioners’ meeting Thursday morning
The room was packed with county employees and residents
Commissioners proposed making cuts in its county health insurance plan for 11 employees that started working for the county in 2011 or before
They say it was an attempt to help bring down costs in the county budget
the new policy would remove benefits for spouses and go into effect March 1
Sheriff Chad Brown said even though his wife health benefits would be cut
he’d still be paying the same rate of coverage
“Let’s do the right thing and look at all the options not make a decision now in a rush
That’s the right thing to do give it further consideration
I’m asking by you the board to make that happen
Do the right thing for everybody and then let’s come back and make a decision that we all understand and prepare for next year,” said Sheriff Chad Brown Montmorency County
“If this is about money and saving money we should know what that savings is
I believe that is what one of our fellow commissioners had moved for
Let’s table it again until we really know what your savings are
To say you’re doing it to save money but not even knowing what you’re saving it just doesn’t sound right,” said Laura Greene Montmorency County Resident
The board of commissioners voted to pause the implementation of the health plan until March of 2026

(WPBN/WGTU) -- Michigan State Police are asking for help identifying a driver who troopers said assaulted a woman during a road rage incident Thursday in Montmorency County
It happened on County Road 612 near Meridian Line Road
Troopers described the suspect as a white male approximately 60 years old
The man was driving a pristine white passenger van with no markings or equipment
MSP did not provide a picture of the suspect or the van
If anyone has any information that could help identify the suspect or vehicle
you’re asked to call MSP Alpena Post at (989) 354-4101
ALPENA — At the Alpena Public Schools board meeting Monday night
Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District (AMA ESD) Superintendent Justin Gluesing spoke to the board about the SOAR partnership at Ella White Elementary School
SOAR is an acronym used at Ella White to enforce positive behavior
The SOAR room is primarily a behavior support classroom
Students who use the SOAR room have Individualized Education Programs
A student’s IEP will determine whether the SOAR classroom is suitable for their particular needs
When a student first starts in the SOAR room
Once staff determine that a student would benefit from more time in a general education setting
they will help the student make that transition
This is the second full year of the program at APS
only APS students are able to use the SOAR classroom
but Gluesing hopes to expand that opportunity to the other districts in the AMA ESD
Gluesing is seeking the approval of the boards of education at Hillman Community Schools
to bring the SOAR room into AMA’s fold
If all the school districts vote to approve this initiative
they will all be able to utilize the SOAR room
The AMA would be responsible for staffing and oversight of the program
It would function similarly to the Pied Piper school
“It’s a similar sort of relationship in terms of how we would transition to take over the SOAR room program at Ella White,” Gluesing said during Monday night’s board meeting
Gluesing also hopes to renovate the SOAR room
“We hope to evaluate and consider some options for renovating the space,” Gluesing said
“Some of you I know have visited Pied Piper
where we’ve gone through a renovation of that space over this past summer… we see that there is a potential opportunity for that as well for the existing classroom where the SOAR room is and the adjacent spaces nearby
“I do want to extend my thanks to Dr
and of course Stacy Moors for all of their work
along with Ashley behind the scenes,” Gluesing said
“…Provided we get all the approvals
we’ve agreed really to work hand in hand as we work through this transition.”
APS Superintendent Dave Rabbideau thanked Gluesing for being responsive to the needs of APS
there’s always been a misalignment between AMA and APS
and I just remember saying ‘I’m excited to have Justin be taking over AMA
because he understands APS,'” Rabbideau said
“I’ve looked forward to a new era
and really thank you because you have been very responsive to the needs of not only APS
but all the other districts,” Rabbideau said
“And this is a huge step forward in our relationship with partnering together on a program that is desperately needed
not just in APS but all across AMA and well beyond those boundaries as well

We've now released final designs for the new Greensborough and Montmorency stations
which will be rebuilt as part of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication
The final designs combine community feedback with the natural features of the local areas and benefits of modern new stations
You told us you wanted to ensure the station precincts incorporate more vegetation and landscaping
improve facilities and accessibility for all and include more station parking
with new straight platforms eliminating the gap between the train and platform
There will also be improved lighting and CCTV cameras throughout the precincts
improving safety and security for passengers
Community feedback has also helped shape the new Greensborough Station
The Greensborough community told us they preferred modern
The final design reflects these preferences
with the colours and feel of the buildings and landscaping complementing the surrounds
The new Montmorency station will remain in the heart of Montmorency village and will improve connections around the area
We heard strong preferences for a minimalist design that blends into the local environment with low visual impact
native vegetation and use of natural materials
Find out more in our Greensborough and Montmorency consultation report
shrubs and grasses around the Greensborough and Montmorency Station precincts will take place as part of our major works
The Hurstbridge Line Duplication is part of an $18 billion investment in dozens of major transport projects in Melbourne’s north eastern suburbs
Construction will begin now that contracts have been awarded for the $530 million project
the project will generate 1500 jobs at peak construction

Hundreds of metres of new railway tracks promised by the Andrews government in Melbourne’s north-east will no longer be built to save an endangered butterfly species
The $530 million track duplication on the Hurstbridge line was promised before the 2018 state election
The upgrade would benefit commuters in two marginal
The Eltham copper butterfly is found only at several sites around Eltham and in isolated spots in Castlemaine
The project involved duplicating about three kilometres of a single-track section between Greensborough and east of Montmorency station
and a separate 1.5 kilometre stretch between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen
Work started on the project late last year but was paused after a local spotted the endangered Eltham copper butterfly in remnant bushland near Montmorency station in January
This prompted the Level Crossing Removal Authority to alert the federal Department of Agriculture
Water and the Environment about the discovery
The state government looked set to face a lengthy environmental approvals process to proceed with the works

950 metres of the rail line will no longer be duplicated east of Montmorency station on the Eltham side — where the butterfly habitat is located
Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the government had to act quickly to ensure it was following federal environmental legislation
“We’re already hard at work delivering the Hurstbridge line duplication through this growing part of Melbourne and very soon residents will benefit from more frequent and reliable services,” she said
is found only at several sites around Eltham and in isolated spots in Castlemaine
until it was rediscovered in Eltham in 1986
said it was great news that it would be spared
But he said had the government carried out proper environmental assessments before starting the project
instead of relying on residents’ intervention
“they wouldn’t have ended up in this awful mess with egg all over their faces
“It’s appalling that local residents have had to step in and protect this crucial butterfly habitat
when multiple Victorian state and federal government agencies should have been aware of it from the beginning
The government counters that it had carried out all necessary environmental assessments and there was no sign of the butterfly before they were sighted in early 2021
The government says the revised design will not reduce the service frequency it originally promised: a train on average every seven minutes from Greensborough and every 10 minutes from Montmorency and Eltham
This is due to additional signalling and power works that will now be rolled out
Any changes to the cost of the works being carried out by an alliance of Acciona
WSP and Metro Trains Melbourne will not be significant
Major construction is to start early next year and will be finished in late 2022
The butterfly habitat will be fenced off while the works are under way
Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said the government had to ensure no services would be sacrificed
“It certainly does compromise the duplication and they do need to make sure the rest of the project is optimised to reduce train delays,” he said
The federal Environment Department said substantial civil or criminal penalties would apply to any person who carried out work that posed significant impact to a nationally endangered species without the proper approvals in place

Montmorency have responded to back-to-back defeats in the Melbourne Greyhounds Division 1 competition by breaking away in the second half to defeat North Heidelberg by 38 points at Shelley Street Reserve
the Magpies kicked eight goals to three in a clinical final two quarters to claim a 15.14 (104) to 9.12 (66) triumph
The ruck and midfielder paring of Flynn Riley and Nash Holmes starred for visitors in the win
Riley did plenty of damage around the ground
dominating in the contests and kicking the goal of the day in the final term to cap off a fantastic afternoon
Holmes was great in the middle and lively inside forward 50
kicking two goals and acting as a playmaker
dishing the footy to his teammates for set shots
former Collingwood player Callum Brown excelled and played a crucial role for the winning side around the ground
Jesse Tardio did his best work in the middle and out of the centre clearances
also getting on the scoreboard to continue his excellent patch of form
Brock Chircop proved to be the best Bulldog in the forward line
kicking four majors in a match for the first time since Round 15
Immediately the tone was set for this intriguing matchup in the first quarter
as neither team could create any free-flowing football to start the term
But as Ayhan Bajramov slotted through Montmorency’s first of the afternoon
his side starting to get on top in many facets of the game
They had five out of the first six opportunities at goal
however they were only able to capitalise on two of them
North Heidelberg was able to hit back within a minute of the Magpies’ second
thanks to a messy goal from Zane Souleiman
the Bulldogs found more football around the ground
with the game opening up in the latter stages of the quarter
highlighted by a beautiful checkside kick in the forward pocket from North Heidelberg’s Thomas Rivis to make it a seven-point deficit for his side
Montmorency would be the team to continue to generate opportunities for the remainder of the quarter but would only manage four more behinds to lead by 11 at the first break
Nick Rutley’s men would carry their momentum from the previous term into the second courtesy of Blake Murphy
who slotted through the opening two majors to put some scoreboard pressure on the home side
Nash Holmes then kicked his second with another great goal from the pocket
as his side were making the most of North Heidelberg errors inside their defensive 50
The Bulldogs didn’t allow the Magpies to run away with the game as they started to settle back into the match
who converted a tough set shot on the boundary to cut the deficit back to 20 points
despite Stefan Uzelac’s best efforts in defence for the Magpies
and it would prove to be the case as on the cusp of half time
leaving a 13-point margin for Jason Heatley’s men to chase in the second half
North Heidelberg’s charge would carry into the third quarter in what was a brilliant start for the hosts
Adam Giobbi found the big sticks before a third goal from Chircop suddenly saw the margin reduced to a single point as they closed in on their first lead of the afternoon
But once Montmorency shook off the slow start to the term and started to get their hands on the football again
They would generate multiple high-quality scoring opportunities
with Bajramov’s major putting an end to a five-goal run from the Bulldogs
The Magpies would then slot the next three majors of the term
both through great play by the visitors as well as ill-discipline from a North Heidelberg side who could sense the game was slipping away from them
Leading by 24 points at three quarter time
Montmorency looked determined to put the game to bed
as Flynn Riley produced a stellar goal on the run from the boundary inside the first 30 second of the last term
Dylan Costantin put the final nail in the coffin with an excellent mark at the back of a pack
A fourth Chircop major ended the Magpies’ goalscoring run
but the away side were relentless in not allowing their opponents any room inside 50 to get good looks at goal
with North Heidelberg unable to find the big sticks in their next four scoring shots
Montmorency rounded out an impressive second half with two further majors to solidify a 38-point victory
Structural works at the new Greensborough Station
The second stage of the Hurstbridge Line Duplication will deliver further improvements
less crowding on peak trains and better connections to public transport in Melbourne’s north east
you would have noticed changes to the Greensborough
We’re continuing with works to get your new stations and upgrades ready
Some of these works will involve our crews working around the clock
To enable us to get on with duplicating 3.5km of track on the Hurstbridge Line safely and efficiently
from 8pm Friday 16 December to last service Sunday 18 December sections of the rail line will be closed
rail replacement buses will stop at all stations between Heidelberg and Hurstbridge
with construction taking place around the clock in Greensborough
Montmorency and Diamond Creek to Wattle Glen
the Victorian Government announced the Ruthven Street level crossing in Macleod will be removed by 2027
This will provide more benefits for local communities and a better transport network for all Victorians
Removing this level crossing will make the area safer and prevent even longer boom gate down time when the Hurstbridge Line Duplication delivers more train services
morning peak trains will run on average every:
The project will also allow for 2 additional services from Hurstbridge during the morning peak
Between Friday 16 December and Sunday 18 December
we will work during the day and night along the rail corridor at Greensborough
Montmorency and Diamond Creek to Wattle Glen to deliver a range of crucial works
These will include continuing to fit out the new Greensborough Station
earthworks and construction for the new Montmorency Station
relocating and replacing electrical utilities underground and installing rail signalling equipment and structural steel support for overhead wires
There will also be works at private pedestrian crossings in Diamond Creek
Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians
As we near the opening of the new Greensborough and Montmorency stations in mid 2023 and duplication of the track
there will be further periods of day and night works next year
We will provide you with more detail about this closer to the time
Buses replace trains on the Hurstbridge Line between Heidelberg and Hurstbridge stations from 8pm Friday 16 December to last service Sunday 18 December
Visit the interactive disruptions map to find out about transport disruptions happening near you
To enable construction works to safely take place
there will be the following access changes at Greensborough
Montmorency and Diamond Creek stations in December:
Please see local signage in these areas for further details on additional bussing and detour information
Please note these times are dependent on a variety of factors including weather and progress of works and are subject to change
We are on track to deliver stage 1 of your new shared walking and cycling path
Construction will begin early next year and stage 1 will be completed at the end of 2023
The 2km shared path will be built between Greensborough and Montmorency stations and provide safe and easy access between the 2 stations
linking with the Plenty River Trail and station forecourts
stage 2 of the path was announced which will connect Montmorency and Eltham
the new path will provide the missing link between Eltham and Greensborough and will help connect communities – making getting to school
or just going for a bike ride easier and safer for kids and families
new landscaping will include a combination of native trees
flowering plants and grasses to complement the character of the local area
We will keep you updated as works progress
Artist's impression – proposed artwork for the new Montmorency Station by acclaimed sculptor Robert Bridgewater
We are excited to announce Robert Bridgewater as the winning sculptor behind the public artwork that will be installed at the new Montmorency Station in mid 2023
The sculpture is inspired by the Eltham Copper Butterfly wing and will be crafted using intricate and abstract representations of the Sweet Bursaria shrub and Notoncus ant
which are essential to the butterfly’s lifecycle
The cast iron sculpture will be left to rust naturally and turn a dark red colour to reference the agricultural heritage of the local area
Community feedback helped shape the new public artwork
locals including art students from Montmorency Secondary College and Eltham High School gained a deeper understanding about the planned sculpture at a virtual information session where they heard about the initial concepts of 4 shortlisted artists
we surveyed the community about the desired look and feel of the sculpture
Robert’s celebrated works have been displayed at solo exhibitions and prominent locations across Australia and he has completed a series of commissions including for the Grand Hyatt
"It is hoped that over time the sculpture will become a cherished part of the Montmorency village experience." – Robert Bridgewater
we worked with students from 6 primary schools in Greensborough
Montmorency and Diamond Creek to create artwork for our project fences
Students created hand painted works that were printed onto project fencing
The artworks were inspired by native fauna
local landscape as well as Indigenous concepts
You can find the artworks on display at Para Road near Greensborough Station
along Mayona Road in Montmorency and at the Diamond Creek Station car park
Participating schools were Greensborough Primary School
Diamond Creek East Primary School and Sacred Heart Primary School
A local pumpkin hunt had children in the spooky spirit in October
Families across Montmorency and Diamond Creek took part in the Halloween inspired event to promote shopping locally
Upon finding all the pumpkin stickers in participating trader shop windows
children collected a goodie bag made from compostable and biodegradable material to take home
"It was great to see our traders get into the spirit of the spooky season and lots of kids and their families getting involved with our local event."

Montmorency and Diamond Creek Traders Association
buses replaced trains on the Hurstbridge Line between Macleod and Hurstbridge as we worked along the rail line from Greensborough to Montmorency and Diamond Creek to Wattle Glen
a massive 600 tonne crane lifted the new bridge into place over the Plenty River in 2 sections – one weighing 65 tonnes and the other weighing 55 tonnes– to form the 50-metre structure
A total of 46 precast panels were then installed
We also worked on the new station concourse at Greensborough
with the structure of the station now well underway
Around 300 pieces of structural steel were installed
Works to build the first platform for the new Montmorency Station have started and we’ve also been extending Platform 2 at Diamond Creek Station
we are working closely with Banyule City Council and Nillumbik Shire Council to install approximately 65 nest boxes along the rail line from Greensborough to Montmorency and Diamond Creek to Wattle Glen
to paint the nest boxes with Indigenous-inspired artwork
The nest boxes will provide a home for local species while new vegetation planted as part of the project matures
The size of the nest boxes varies depending on the species that will make each box home
microbats and a range of birds are expected to move into these new homes
The best way to stay up to date on the project is to:
We wish everyone an enjoyable and safe holiday season as we go into the new year and prepare to complete the Hurstbridge Line Duplication in late 2023
Republican Linsey Rogers ran for treasurer in Montmorency County — and won as the only listed candidate, according to information posted on the county website
Rogers also ran for school board in the Montmorency community of Atlanta — and won there
finishing third out of three candidates for three board seats in the community in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula
The double victories for Rogers are now the subject of litigation
They also came up at Friday's meeting of the Board of State Canvassers in Lansing
where Assistant Attorney General Heather Meingast said the twin victories for Rogers appeared to be in violation of Michigan law related to incompatible public offices
Meingast told board members they don't have jurisdiction to get involved in such an issue
She advised the board to certify the Michigan election
and allow the situation to be addressed elsewhere
nobody can simultaneously hold two public offices that are deemed incompatible
Montmorency Clerk Cheryl Neilsen said the current treasurer
sued in Montmorency County Circuit Court over Rogers' double candidacy and lost
The case is now before the Michigan Court of Appeals
She declined to say whether she had made a determination about whether the two offices were incompatible
but she addressed her double candidacies in an Oct
Rogers said she's not convinced the two offices are incompatible
her name should not have appeared twice on the county ballot
Rogers said if the positions are found to be incompatible
she is prepared to give up her school board position to serve as county treasurer
State law says public offices are incompatible if one is subordinate to the other
or if performing the duties of one public office can create a breach of duty related to the other public office
Running for two incompatible offices could potentially disqualify a candidate from both
"The two positions of Montmorency County treasurer and the Atlanta School Board of Education have not been proven to be incompatible," Rogers said on Facebook

In a statement that didn't appear consistent with the rest of her Oct
Rogers said in the same Facebook message that she had abandoned her candidacy for the school board
even though her name would appear on the ballot

Bicycle Network opened three new Parkiteer facilities as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project on Mt Derrimut Road and the Hurstbridge line duplication projects between October and December last year
The opening of the Deer Park station saw the removal of the 68th level crossing at Mt Derrimut Road
The station boasts an air-conditioned waiting room
a multi-bay bus interchange and a 60-space Parkiteer facility (our largest yet)
the new larger Parkiteer facility has been designed with dual entrances and exits to facilitate the flow of bike traffic during peak times
New stations built at Greensborough and Montmorency
and a 2km rail duplication of the track between them
aim to reduce crowding on peak trains at these busy locations
Both stations have a Parkiteer facility each
offering a combined total of 52 secure bike parking stations
A new shared user path will provide safe and easy access
linking the Plenty River Trail and station forecourts
The Parkiteer network is expected to grow and improve as transport projects and upgrades continue across Victoria
New and upgraded Parkiteer facilities are planned at Glen Huntly
Visit parkiteer.com.au to register and find your nearest available Parkiteer bike parking facility
Parkiteer users must register for a home facility. Requests for access to any additional facilities will need to be sent via email to parkiteer@bicyclenetwork.com.au and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis

Montmorency 1 were at their magnificent best in the Heidelberg Golf Club Division 1 women’s Grand Final
breaking the game open in the second half to defeat Banyule by 28 points at Preston City Oval
The Magpies were the team to beat all season with just one loss in the 2023 campaign and it was clear to see why after half time
with a five-goal to two second half securing a 6.13 (49) to 3.3 (21) triumph
While it proved to be a strong performance
Montmorency were still in a vulnerable position at the main break
kicking just one goal from 10 scoring shots
Their opponents in Banyule only managed six scoring shots for the day themselves
but it was a more than respectable effort for a side that was promoted to the top flight after Round 4 and held their own throughout the season to reach their first Grand Final
Emily Beanland was simply incredible for the premiers and was rewarded with the best on ground medal
Her efforts in the ruck gave the Magpies midfielders every chance of surging forward
while her marking ability also standing out
Madeline Gallagher had an excellent performance all around the ground as did Grace Robinson who finished as the only multiple goalkicker for the afternoon with two majors
Heidi Cummins held her own in the ruck despite Beanland’s hit outs to advantage
while Candice Dyson was busy in the midfield and had an outstanding work ethic
Olivia Perillo also had some great moments and was one of Banyule’s most lively performers in the decider
Both sides were desperate to be the first to notch up a score and after some strong attacking pressure from Montmorency
they would be the ones to find the big sticks first courtesy of Grace Robinson
The Magpies dominated territory but only managed that one goal for the term
with a behind from Banyule on the siren seeing the margin stick to seven points at quarter time
Montmorency continued to create opportunities
but it was apparent that their accuracy on goal was letting them down
the Bears capitalised as Brieanna Musgrave
who was coming off a four-goal performance in last week’s preliminary final
took advantage of a free kick to kick her side’s first for the match
The contest swung back in Montmorency’s favour
but their finishing left a lot to be desired as they closed out the term with a run of five straight behinds
It was enough to push their lead to eight points by half time
but it left the door ajar for Banyule to keep things competitive coming out of the main break
it looked as though the minor premiers’ inaccuracy would come back to haunt them as Banyule’ Samantha Temple nailed a set shot five minutes into the quarter which reduced the margin to two points
But the Bears couldn’t gather any momentum from the goal
and it would prove to be the closest they got to the Magpies for the rest of the match
Montmorency quickly regained control but again could only find one more behind to go out to 1.10 for the game
the minor premiers finally created some scoreboard pressure
with majors thanks to Georgia Thomson and Chiara Scuderi within the space of a minute
taking their advantage out to 15 points at three quarter time
The final term started with Grace Robinson
running hard with the footy inside 50 before her shot just missed to the right for another Montmorency behind
as goals from Shelby Coall and Taylah Harris all but sewed up the match six minutes into the quarter
The scoring dried up through the middle patches of the term but with a 28-point advantage
they didn’t put their heads down and were able to produce some scoring chances late in the game
highlighted by Olivia Perillo who kicked a nice goal
But it was the minor premiers who had the final say
as Grace Robinson strolled through and delivered her second and the Magpies sixth goal of the game
ensuring the premiership cup would be heading to Montmorency Park in 2023
ATLANTA — Michelle Haren — hair tied back in a kerchief
apron on — stood behind the counter at the Willows Cafe in downtown Atlanta on Wednesday and welcomed a small but steady flow of lunchtime regulars
She answered quick when asked to name the best part of doing business in Atlanta
a community of 576 people along M-32 in the heart of Montmorency County
“It’s a slow go,” Haren said
And that might just sum up the state of Montmorency County’s economy
chugging along with high unemployment and growing poverty
and a bevy of leaders working to recruit new investment
“I think there’s a lot going on,” said Brian Bartosh
president of the Hillman Area Chamber of Commerce
“It’s been going on for a couple years
While Presque Isle and Alcona counties occasionally dip among the worst counties in the state for unemployment
Montmorency County consistently ranks in the bottom 10 (Alpena County usually has a middling rate)
Montmorency County’s unemployment rate sat at 8%
compared to 7% across all of Northeast Michigan and 6% statewide
The latest Kids Count Data Book showed that
while childhood poverty ticked up only slightly in Alpena County between 2017 and 2022 and declined in Presque Isle and Alcona counties in that time
it hiked 6.5 percentage points in Montmorency County
“I think that what happened is that we kind of got caught in a rut
president of the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce and secretary of the Briley Township Planning Commission
A number of trends are working against the county
While Census Data shows Northeast Michigan’s population declined about 5% between 2010 and 2022 and grew about 1% statewide in that time
Montmorency County’s population shrank nearly 7% in those years
while about 26% of all Michiganders and 39% of Northeast Michiganders are 60 or older
43% of Montmorency County residents are 60 or older
Montmorency County’s most populous community
noted no interstates connect Montmorency County to downstate population centers
communities on the I-75 corridor are doing very well,” Post said
It’s all two-lane roads to even get here
I imagine that probably hinders some of it.”
Federal data shows Montmorency County’s biggest industry is real estate
accounting for a third of the county’s economic output as low housing supply drives up the cost of homes
People selling their homes and the agents who help them are making money
“Real estate’s not gonna cure us
that’s for sure,” Kennedy said
‘JOBS AND HOUSING ARE HAND-IN-HAND’
Montmorency County has a lot going for it that makes it ripe for development
modern sewer and water infrastructure that can hook up just about any business
“plus a lot of land that’s inexpensive,” said Bartosh
while state data shows all of Northeast Michigan’s labor force — a measure of people either working or looking for work — grew by 9% between July 2020 and last month
Montmorency County’s labor force grew 16% in that time
And officials across the county have done many things to try to make sure those people have jobs to fill
The primary focus across the county has been housing
because “we don’t have nowhere near enough of it,” said Kennedy
“If we’re gonna create these jobs
we have to have a place to put these people,” Kennedy said
“Jobs and housing are hand-in-hand right now.”
So officials everywhere are rezoning areas for housing and working to entice developers to build it
Habitat for Humanity Northeast Michigan has partnered with Hillman on a five-year plan to build as many as 50 homes on nearly 20 acres in the village
and government officials working on economic development
also partners with schools to offer scholarships for trades training and partners with Michigan Works
said his village offers a revolving loan fund for startups
officials created an industrial area readymade for business investment and are working to recruit even small operations
“Twenty to 40 jobs in a small town is a lot,” Kennedy said
It wasn’t immediately clear Wednesday what the county government does for economic development
The phone number listed on the county’s website for the Montmorency County Economic Development Corp
A message sent to the email address for that outfit bounced back as invalid
chairman of the Montmorency County Board of Commissioners
did not respond to a message seeking comment
Multiple officials said Montmorency County residents need to step up
Many businesses throughout the county need help but struggle to get anyone to apply
Officials said the county will continue to build a business-friendly environment and work to market itself to investors and potential future residents
“We don’t wanna become a city,” Atlanta’s Kennedy said

Chaos reigns in The Serpent Queen‘s Season 2 finale episode
“All Saints Day,” and we have an exclusive first look at the drama unfolding ahead of the episode’s arrival on Friday
The episode will follow how Catherine’s (Samantha Morton) actions lead to chaos and bloodshed
The finale explores whether or not she can prevent a total war from being unleashed or if it is out of her control
In the sneak peek clip, above, Catherine and Montmorency (Alexandre Willaume) have a candid conversation by the fire
“Once Edith ascends to the power I have granted her
As viewers will recall, Catherine granted Edith (Isobel Jesper Jones) a certain level of power in the previous installment
Montmorency confirms that “perhaps” Edith will burn the country to the ground
“but I cannot sanction her death.” Catherine understands this though
seems like the younger generation is determined to f**k things up in their own way.”
“So what happens now?” Catherine wonders aloud
I would preserve what I know to be good in you
and I would take you the f**k away from here,” Montmorency says
“Retire from court together,” Catherine remarks
will you consider it?” Thinking over his words
and don’t miss the finale episode when it arrives on Starz

“These houses are covering new ground and there is certainly demand and competition for them,” he said

Crews have started a six-week construction blitz to deliver new Greensborough and Montmorency stations
and finish laying and connecting 3.5 kilometres of track and signalling along the Hurstbridge Line
as work progresses on the Hurstbridge Line Duplication
More than 1000 workers will be working around the clock to complete the works
with the new stations set to open by the end of April
The project will make way for a new timetable on the Hurstbridge line
coming into effect from mid-2023 – with the duplicated line allowing trains to run every seven minutes from Greensborough
10 minutes from Montmorency and Eltham and 20 minutes from Diamond Creek
Wattle Glen and Hurstbridge during the morning peak
modern stations at Greensborough and Montmorency will have better facilities for passengers including better weather protection
safer connections to the surrounding area and improved all abilities access to meet the community’s needs
A new walking and cycling path will be built between the two stations by the end of the year
making it easier for people to exercise and commute – and will connect to the Plenty River Trail with a new pedestrian crossing south of Greensborough Station
Platform 2 at Diamond Creek Station will also be upgraded during the construction blitz and a new signalised pedestrian crossing behind Diamond Valley College will be built
making getting to and from school safer for students
While works are happening, buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge line. Express buses will run between Eltham and Parliament during weekday morning peak. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. For more info and to plan your journey, visit ptv.vic.gov.au.
Transport and Infrastructure minister Jacinta Allan said buillding these new stations and duplicating the Hurstbridge line would provide more capacity for passengers during peak hours
