is controlled An hour later you’re awoken to car doors slamming and people yelling in your street This was the scenario that played out for one Crestview Close resident and their family on Saturday 15 March as a bushfire raged just metres away from their home “It was frightening waking up to those sounds I don’t think I’ll ever forget the people screaming in the street and yelling trying to wake up the neighbours,” they said got up and raced out the front and from our balcony “I looked up the street and all I could see was a glow.” sometimes the size of a screwdriver and five to 10 centimetres wide were a sign for them to get out as soon as they could getting them to safety was the first priority Ensuring windows and doors were locked and the house was watered as much as possible the family of four left their Montrose home for a family member’s Items already packed in the car ready to go with just the cat and the dog needing to be bundled into the car too I looked up at the end of the street where people were standing and there was fire that had started coming down the walking track where we normally go up into the bush but there was still fire at the very end of the street and the trees behind the house were just glowing.” truly kicked in and it wasn’t until they reached safety that the reality sank in “I don’t even remember smelling the smoke until I was safe at (my in-law’s) house but I’ve seen photos and videos and I’m just like With the height and ferocity of fire not getting to its worst until after midnight it wasn’t uncommon for people to have stayed “A lot of people I know in the area weren’t leaving their house until about 12 I think it took people a while to realise how bad it was getting As soon as we could hear what we could hear and see what we saw Having had questions since the events of Saturday night as to why they didn’t leave that afternoon the resident said messaging led them to believe it was safe enough to stay or in the case of Sheffield Road residents It was for this reason they asked to remain anonymous because of fear of criticism “You can’t just pack up every time there’s fire small shrub and grass fires happen all the time we went to bed at 10 o’clock with the knowledge of going outside assessing it within that hour…It just goes to show how quick and instant it actually can be.” Adding to the initial sense of safety on Saturday night was the precautions the family had taken after the fire had started around 2pm and got up on the roof and made sure our gutters were clean “We also have a wood fire that we use for heating so we have a big pile of firewood up the back of our house That was our main concern so we were hosing that down all afternoon just trying to get it as wet as possible in case anything changed It’s just important things that aren’t replaceable So we put them in the car just to get ready because you never know what’s going to happen.” moving the pile of wood to the far back corner of their property to ensure that no houses would be impacted if the situation worsened again Speaking to Star Mail on Thursday 20 March and having had a few days to come to terms with what had happened the resident said even in hindsight there probably wasn’t much more they could have done “All it takes is for that little bit of wind I don’t think we could have done anything different.” Despite some criticism of the notifications being sent out to residents and the quick change in warnings on VicEmergency the Crestview Close resident said hopefully the bushfire acts as a learning experience for everyone I really just hope it makes people think about it more literally and look at where we live You can’t ignore the fact that it might happen one day Make sure you don’t have rubbish laying around “Hopefully it’s just a reality check for people of where we live and making sure you’ve got your plan of attack in place and making sure your kids understand you can’t always rely on your phones for that instant alert Living in the same street as the residents who lost their home it proved how easily an ember that catches in a backyard can spread – luckily it was contained to just two properties “I feel bad for those people that their house burned down so it just went through the back of the house and so the front looks ok Although living on an urban fringe and not in dense bush like the Dandenongs the resident said there comes a time when everything needs to burn you’ve sort of got to expect it at some point It could be every five years or 10 years that something will happen All articles from our Kalorama CFA’s community safety coordinator, Virginia Porter reflected on the critical concerns that arose during the Montrose fire on Saturday night, 15 March, particularly about the public’s reliance on social media and apps for emergency alerts. She said while these tools are helpful, it should not be the sole source of information during a crisis. “The main concern was that people were expecting to be told exactly what to do,” Ms Porter said. “In a bushfire-prone area, it’s crucial that people have their own plans in place. They need to understand what to do when the fire threat is near – waiting for someone to knock on the door to tell you to evacuate isn’t realistic.” As fires spread rapidly throughout the night, particularly in the Kalorama and Mount Daniel areas, those with local knowledge took proactive steps early. Ms Porter said that many residents on the mountain, including herself, packed up and evacuated early in the day, and there were some who waited to be told what to do. “The people who’ve been around here for a while knew that if the wind shifted, the fire could be here in less than 20 minutes,” she said. “So, they packed up and left early. Unfortunately, others down in Montrose waited until the last minute, relying on someone else to tell them when to go.” For those living in bushfire-prone areas, Ms Porter’s advice is clear: take responsibility for your own safety by developing a bushfire plan well before fire season begins. “It’s important to plan for different fire danger days and make decisions ahead of time. Don’t wait until the fire is on your doorstep,” she said. “Everyone’s situation is different—whether you have children, elderly family members, or pets to consider. Your plan should reflect that.” Ms Porter also highlighted the difference in mindset between those living in bushfire-prone areas and those who are less familiar with fire risks. Many residents in the Dandenongs, for example, have experienced multiple bushfire threats and have learned to act early, while others still expect emergency services to guide them every step of the way. “People need to stop relying on the idea that someone will come and tell them what to do. That simply won’t happen,” Ms Porter said. “You need to have a plan, know your surroundings, and be ready to act.” In response to the increasing reliance on social media for information, the CFA’s community safety coordinator encourages residents to gather information from multiple reliable sources, such as local fire brigades and emergency services. This will help ensure that people are prepared for whatever the fire season may bring. The history of fires in the Dandenongs is a significant factor in understanding the risks in the region. Ms Porter recommended reaching out to operational members for more in-depth historical context, mentioning John Schauble, from the Sassafras Fire Brigade as someone with extensive knowledge of local fires and their impact on the community. Despite the challenges, Ms Porter remains optimistic that the community can learn from the Montrose fire and build a more resilient approach to future bushfire threats. She strongly advocates for ongoing community education through fire brigade meetings, where residents can learn how to create and execute a fire plan tailored to their specific needs. “We need to encourage people to attend these community meetings, understand the risks in their area, and most importantly, have a plan in place,” she said. “Fires are unpredictable, but if you’re prepared, you can react quickly and safely.” Ms Porter’s message is clear: preparedness and local knowledge are the best defences against the ever-present threat of bushfires. For more information about fire safety and to access resources for creating a personal fire plan, residents are encouraged to visit their local CFA station or attend community safety meetings in their area. The sacrifice and dedication of wartime nurses from the eastern suburbs will forever be immortalised in a bronze statue in Montrose. Receiving a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Saluting Their Service program, a bronze bust of Sister Edith Yeaman, a World War I nurse from Montrose, will be created and installed in the special nurses garden in the town centre. This process was initiated by Montrose Men’s Shed member Max Lamb in 2023 by planting a memorial garden fitted with plaques to recognise the service of nurses from the region. Having envisioned that a bronze statue would one day join the memorial site, Mr Lamb, the Men’s Shed, the Montrose Township Group, with the help of Yarra Ranges Council, applied for funding to arrange the statue. The Montrose Township Group proudly announced the success on Sunday 10 November ahead of Remembrance Day. “Sister Edith Yeaman served as a WWI nurse, embodying the courage and compassion that defined her profession during such challenging times. We are proud to recognise her legacy and the legacy of all nurses who served,” a social media post read. “The statue will be placed in a special garden located between the Montrose War Memorial and the Historical Cottage, where it will complement two existing nurse plaques. “This garden will serve as a serene space for reflection and remembrance, highlighting the dedication of those who have served.” Mr Lamb said while some towns around the state are starting to recognise the nurses, it is still quite rare. “Every town’s got its memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives, but virtually no one’s got a memorial to the nurses,” he said. “They are starting to appear now. There’s one up at Myrtleford. I believe a mural has just been unveiled in Violet Town and I think there’s one closer to Melbourne but they’re very few and far between.” Remembering that nurses too were thrown into the horrors of war, Mr Lamb said many died and many came home injured or after being a prisoner of war. “They went overseas, and they served very close to the front and they did get bombed a couple of times,” he said. “When Japan took over Singapore, quite a lot got captured and then when they were evacuated out, the ship got bombed, and quite a few lost their lives or they were captured by the Japanese. So the nurses certainly were in the thick of it.” Nurse Yeaman enlisted in 1915 at the age of 30 and on 15 May that year, just three weeks after the landing at Gallipoli, she sailed from Sydney on board RMS Mooltan headed for an island in the Aegean Sea. She served on a hospital ship at the port of Mudros in Lemnos. This was the port that the sick and wounded from Gallipoli were sent to. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, Nurse Yeaman served in hospitals at Alexandria, Egypt, then on to England before finally serving in France. In May 1917 Nurse Edith was promoted to Sister. Fortunately, Sister Yeaman was able to return home safely to her family in May 1919, almost four years after she left and continued to work in hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney. Her name currently sits on one of the plaques in the Montrose Memorial Gardens for Nurses, as Mr Lamb likes to call it, surrounded by names of other women who served from the district. Unsure of when the statue will be complete, Mr Lamb said he hopes for early to mid next year, with the aim being May given Sister Yeaman’s ties with the month. Mr Lamb said this addition to the town centre will ensure important figures from all facets of past wars will be commemorated, with the cenotaph standing in the middle and the story of the Montrose man who is said to have fired the first shot in World War I, completing a true memorial. Armed Crime Squad detectives will allege three men attended a Currawong Drive, Montrose address on Wednesday 23 October about 5pm. Once inside the property the men allegedly confronted the male resident before stealing a scooter, audio equipment and cash. The male resident was not physically injured during the incident. On Thursday 24 October police were called to Achillies Court, Lilydale to reports of an aggravated burglary about 7.30pm. Police will allege four men attended the address, armed with a firearm and axe. They forced entry to the property and assaulted a male and female resident, before fleeing the area. The two residents suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the incident. It is further alleged at 11.30pm, three men attended the Currawong Drive address and attempted to gain access to the home. Whilst outside the property they discharged a firearm and left the scene. Detectives will allege that both aggravated burglaries were targeted. Armed Crime Squad detectives arrested a 29-year-old Ashwood man and a 33-year-old Bayswater North man on 12 November. Both men have been charged with two counts of home invasion, two counts of aggravated burglary, intentionally cause injury, weapons offences and criminal damage. Several warnings have been issued for southeast Melbourne residents to exercise caution as an out-of-control fire burns through Montrose, threatening lives and homes.  A home has been completely ravaged by an out-of-control bushfire which has been burning through dense and dry bushland in Montrose, at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne’s south east. The fire first broke out near the Dr Ken Leversha Reserve early on Saturday afternoon followed by several warnings for residents to prepare and take shelter as unpredictable weather conditions lie ahead.  A watch and act alert was issued on Sunday morning for Kilsyth and Montrose about 6.43am, informing residents that firefighters have been able to slow the spread of fire for now, but the situation can change at any time. "Monitor changes to the situation. Increased wind speed, change in wind direction, smoke or poor visibility can indicate the situation is changing," an alert by the Vic Emergency read. "You must monitor conditions and be ready to act." Victoria’s Country Fire Authority incident control officer Bernard Barbetti told ABC Breakfast about 200 firefighters were on the ground trying to control the bushfire but it had burnt almost 33 hectares so far, with one house lost and another one severely damaged. “It’s in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, just south of Montrose. It's about 33 hectares, it made a significant run around midnight last night," Mr Barbetti said. “We had a down burst, we thought we had the fire under control, but it moved the fire north towards Montrose in the commercial reserve, and unfortunately we’ve lost one house and one significantly damaged. “We do have the fire fully tracked, but there’s a lot of burning trees and the odd spot fire that needs to be controlled. We still have some complete road closures on major roads around Montrose. “We’re working towards opening those as quickly as possible. "There will be a wind change, probably around midday, but we are not expecting the fire to escape." A relief centre has been opened up at Pinks Reserve on Liverpool Road in Kilsyth where 25 residents have evacuated. A Stay Informed warning has also been issued for areas around Montrose, Kilsyth and Kilsyth South that are west of Liverpool Road, north of Canterbury Road and east of Stradbroke Road along with Mount Dandenong. Residents have been urged to stay up to date with alerts throughout the day as several road closures remain in place and weather conditions are expected to change.  Work on the Montrose Coastal Erosion Project has continued, with engineered sandbags now in place at the dunes’ low points, Angus Council said. These, “larger than your average” sandbags are robust and filled with quarried sand. They’ve been positioned within the low points in the dunes at the “pipey” and at points to its north and south, according to the council. While only intended to be a temporary measure, they will provide short-term flood protection and prevent further erosion at the more vulnerable low points. This work follows on from the rock armor re-profiling at the 2nd Tee of the Montrose Golf Links in October ’24, a program of work that was funded by the Montrose Common Good Fund and Montrose Golf Links. Design work for the construction of two rock groynes is now complete and progressing through the consenting process towards construction. The purpose of the proposed rock groynes is to interrupt the movement of sand along the beach, helping to retain material and slow down the erosion at the most vulnerable locations. The council added that options for the long-term dune restoration and beach nourishment are still being investigated as part of the wider project. A public consultation about the design and construction of the rock groynes is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 5, from 3-7pm at the GP room at Montrose Sports Centre. A CFA spokesperson said fire crews responded to reports of a smoke column at around 1.43pm on Saturday near Sheffield Rd in Montrose. “26 CFA units from multiple local brigades responded alongside FRV, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria,” they said. “Upon arrival, crews found an active grass and scrub fire in the Dr Ken Leversha Reserve and immediately began suppression efforts.” Air attack support was requested to assist ground crews. Play Duration: 3 minutes 45 seconds3m 45sBrought to you by There's been a huge expression of sadness about the fate of the little blue boat that's been moored for decades at Montrose Bay. The Sea Breeze broke its mooring and was blown into foreshore walkway, where it has been battered by the wind and waves. Darren Pearson recently purchased the boat, and tells David Reilly on Hobart Drive he's hoping community members will lend a hand to rescue it from the water. The iconic little blue boat in Montrose in Hobart's northern suburbs has been hit by recent wild weather. (ABC News: Georgie Burgess) Montrose, Extreme Weather EventsTranscriptDarren PearsonWell, it's a headache. I want gone, but it ain't going away by itself. David ReillyNo, it's not. You've been down there and had a look at how the little boat's going. What kind of shape? Darren PearsonYeah, I've been on it. When the tide goes down, it's actually you can walk around it. I've scraped a few muscles off it and got to see what I purchased a year ago, this year. But yeah, I reckon she's going to break away eventually and not be repairable if we don't do something soon. David ReillyRight. So, I mean, where it is, I suppose, it's pretty exposed to the elements and if... Darren PearsonYeah, there's rocks underneath and it's rocking in. It's got to be towed a little bit or erased, the beach around, towed onto a beach or towed onto a slipway at the end of the day, just to see if it is repairable. David ReillyHave you been able to get a good sense of the damage, Darren? Darren PearsonWell, the side it's lying on, yesterday was half full of water and by the time I got back, when the tide went out, the water drained out. So it must have a crack or something in there. It was always taking in a little bit of water, but for water to drain out, it must be, you know, damaged. David ReillySo, well, what's been the response, Darren? Certainly a lot of the commentary, we've had a lot of people getting in touch with us. David ReillyWhat do you think is going to be involved in getting it seaworthy again? Darren PearsonBasically, it'll have to be slipped. And basically it was actually seaworthy beforehand, assessing, just getting re-chalked up and everything like that. That's all. Hmm. But the longer it's there, the less chance of that's going to happen, I reckon. So she's on a couple of rocks underneath it, she's copying the full force. When it's low tide, it's not really copying anything at all. David ReillyDarren, what were your plans for the boat? You must have... Darren PearsonBasically, really, it was a mooring minder. It was going to get slipped and painted up and, you know, just used for something, you know, daily, you know, and yeah, it was going to get a little bit of loving in a month or so, but it might not be now. David ReillyAre you hoping that you might get some offers of help? I mean, are you sort of trying to... I mean, are you open to sort of volunteers coming down and giving you a hand or... Darren PearsonOh yeah, that'll be great. If I can get volunteers, probably, even if I can just get it towed to the Montrose boat ramp and we can get it on a trailer and all that with a tilt tray or something like that and take it to a private block and put on a cradle and then put back together again. David ReillyAnd so you say the mooring probably wasn't quite up to scratch. Darren PearsonWell, the mooring was put in about two and a half years ago, a massive chain, but it's broken down very low in the chain. I think it's just the force of mother nature there. David ReillyYeah, well, it was a very, very windy day yesterday. What's your next step then, Darren, from here? Darren PearsonFrom here? Well, it's got to be moved from that location to somewhere safer, out of the water and assessed to see if it's actually repairable. David ReillyThere was somebody, some talk of it potentially being cut up. Is that a possibility? Darren PearsonThe other night I went there and I looked at it. If it's not repairable, it will have to be cut up anyway. So unless someone wants it to use as a garden ornament or a cubby house, they're quite welcome to take it. around a year ago which talked of one-punch killers I couldn’t watch any more as it was just too close to home.” Ross added: “The man who assaulted me was able to carry on his life up until Tuesday without any real restrictions “I was also updated by police that he and his wife were released after only a few hours in custody I’m aware of just how lucky I am not to be more seriously injured “Had my head impacted around 30cm in another direction it would have struck uneven granite cobble It may have resulted in more serious consequences “I lost out quite significantly financially and am now more aware when in crowded situations of just who may approach me.”
