To better understand what is means to be ‘a local’ our suburb profile seeks to understand the local stories Koora (past)
Boordawan (future) and respond to Ngalang Maya (our place)
This snapshot identifies the unique character of Mount Lawley’s neighbourhood and helps the City rethink how we deliver services with a local focus
Mount Lawley’s premier retail precinct is situated on Beaufort Street centering on the Walcott Street intersection
Mount Lawley was named in honour of Sir Arthur Lawley
the Governor of Western Australia from May 1901 to August 1902
Mount Lawley was built on land surveyed between 1833 and 1839 and granted to William Layton and John Gregory
The area became renowned as a stopping place for travellers in the 1830s
when Gregory established the Pineapple Inn
Subdivision of Mount Lawley began in 1892 by the Sydney and Perth Land Building and Investment Company
John Robinson and Samuel Copley acquired land in 1900
which was later developed as the Mount Lawley Estate
The area attracted wealthy business people and high-ranking public servants
Amenities such as churches and colleges were also provided in order to cater for the local population

These are the top local priorities you've told us about what's important for Mount Lawley:
The City has created Locally-led Stirling to drive deeper connection at a local suburb level to listen and respond with a local focus
At the heart of this Locally-led approach is an understanding that local people know what they need and a vision for everyone to get involved in shaping what it means to be “a local”
We want to bring neighbours together, invest in local stories and inspire opportunities to work together. To find out more about Locally-led Stirling, visit Shaping our City
If you're looking for ways to get involved in your local area, please contact one of the City’s Local Engagement Officers by emailing getinvolved@stirling.wa.gov.au
Mount Lawley is largely characterised by Federation and Colonial style dwellings with isolated examples of English vernacular revival
The majority of houses are single detached dwellings on large lots
There are also some group and multiple unit developments dispersed throughout the suburb
Many of the older character homes are of heritage value
The majority of homes in Mt Lawley are of brick and tile construction
Most retail development in Mount Lawley is situated on Beaufort Street
centering on the Walcott Street intersection
There are also several small local shops dispersed throughout the suburb to satisfy local daily needs
Recreation opportunities are provided by a number of small local parks and Inglewood Oval
Hamer Park offers facilities for lawn bowls and the park adjoining the Memorial Gardens contains tennis courts and another green for lawn bowls
Mount Lawley contains five local open spaces
one community open space and one district open space
The Astor Theatre situated on the corner of Beaufort Street and Walcott Street is one of the suburb's significant landmarks. The Astor, built in 1911 and renovated in the popular art-deco style in 1939, is listed both on the City of Stirling Municipal Inventory and the State Register of Heritage Places.
Beaucott Building situated across the street from Astor Theatre was constructed in 1938 and is also listed on the City of Stirling Municipal Inventory. It is an important representative building from the second period of development of Beaufort Street with aesthetic significance and important townscape value.

the culture and hopes of Aboriginal Australia
After a shaky couple of years there Mount Lawley is so back – the suburb returning to fine form as a bustling hub of eating
Cool new laneway precincts like the Alexander Buildings have paved the way for more cafes and restaurants
and an area that began to feel like a ghost town for a minute there has now roared back to life – here’s why:
We first spied this new Mount Lawley Thai spot on a foodie friend’s feed, and we were immediately intrigued. While the recommendation immediately put Kub Kao in our brain’s “cautiously optimistic” category
when we finally got there ourselves we were immediately on board
A pared-back menu means it’s chock-a-block with heavy hitters – like the deliciously crispy salt and pepper roast pork belly
served with green peppercorns and aromatic kaffir lime leaves
(We also couldn’t resist swiping the crispy pork crackling through the creamy Choo Chee curry sauce
which was served with tender slices of grilled beef rump.)
Ultra-cool “new-wave” gelateria Chicho Gelato has been churning some of Perth’s best gelato since opening their Northbridge store in 2016
Merging old-school techniques with new-school flavours and top-tier produce
Chicho excel at unique and refined flavour combos – lavender and honeycomb and malted milk cornflake cookie are oft-returning superstars – but their collabs and limited edition flavours are a particular treat
Since their early days at Freo’s Sunshine Harvester Works, we’ve loved Stampede Gelato’s boundary-pushing approach to flavours
which explore every facet of deliciousness – think Frosties cereal milk
they’ve not only expanded with a new Mount Lawley store
but a sweet South Freo shipping container outpost as well
A stalwart of the area, El Público
is a Mexican joint that has stood the test of Beaufort Street’s time for a few key reasons: its authentic feel is backed up by staff who know and love the food and drinks on offer
and will always help you through their extensive tequila offerings
The food menu hasn’t changed a whole lot over the years
but it hasn’t had to; their tacos are perfect
their street corn should be named desire and those beef mogo mogo balls…yum
Just take it easy on that dangerous cocktail list
We can’t get enough of Testun’s irreverent attitude and big flavours
Combining Italian nostalgia with a new-wave Australasian approach
the neighbourhood osteria is quickly making its (neon green) mark
While Threecoins is technically the elder sibling of Testun, its recent-ish relaunch has given us a reinvigorated enthusiasm for the more traditional
ten-year-old trattoria – although more traditional can only be defined in relation to its irreverent sibling down the road
Comforting Italian classics are melded with that signature bold flavour and high voltage approach… Think pinsa topped with mortadella
a linguine served with prawn bisque and lemon-spiked mascarpone or lamb chops with a pistachio and mint agrodolce
The almost-constant line out the door will attest to the fact that Chu has been killing it since opening their William Street bakery in 2015
You need to be an early bird to be sure to get one of their amazing loaves of bread
loaded toasts and donuts are equally delish – but even without those
Chu would be worth a visit just for their coffee
(Best enjoyed laying on the grass in Hyde Park
their sister café with the same great coffee
After closing shop at Shenton Park’s iconic Petite Mort, chef Todd Stuart has opened a new venture in Highgate, Twenty Seats
the restaurant only hosts 20 diners each night for its meticulous 10-course tasting menu
allowing for a phenomenal level of attentiveness from the entire team that takes Twenty Seats to an all-time great
Tomas Bidois brought his humble taco pop-up to its Highgate laneway home in 2023 and it’s been a hit ever since. A must-visit for any taco enthusiasts, Tommy Tacos is an especially great spot to bring your gluten free friends as Bidois’ Mexican cooking techniques means the entire menu is gluten free
That’s not all, though: 2023 also saw Bidois expand next door, transforming the space formerly home to Homme into ‘Lo
Situated in arguably one of Perth’s most beautiful dining rooms
the restaurant riffs on southern American classics like tea and apple juice-brined pork chops
southern grits with Skull Island prawns or fried chicken and biscuits
Opening just a year ago, Molly’s has been welcomed with wide arms by Perth’s army of Guinness fans
Whether you’re popping in for a quick creamy pint (perhaps with a photo printed on it?)
a trad sesh or an iconic spice bag – you’re sure to be in for the craic
A year after opening their first WA store, Messina‘s cult status as one of Australia’s favourite gelatos hasn’t let up
Serving an impressive selection of 40 gelato flavours
35 are permanent crowd-pleasing classics and five are delicious weekly rotating specials
Another joint that’s managed to hold firm through darker days, Mary Street Bakery has become so successful it’s spun off into a practically endless number of locations around Perth
Their fried chicken buttermilk pancakes are basically legend at this point
but basically everything on the menu is delicious (and sometimes a little decadent)
After a brief 18-month stint in Inglewood, Butter Crumbs has finally moved into a permanent space in Mount Lawley – and it couldn’t have come soon enough
there’s a reason they’ve been a cult hit since their early days at the Mount Claremont Farmers’ Market
Comforting pies (both sweet and savoury) are a must
as is the burnt Basque cheesecake – although you’ll also see some pretty tempting seasonal offerings
This French café is as charming as they come
Alongside a cabinet of baked treats and sandwiches
indulge in a French-style breakfast – croque monsieurs
eggs benedict and pain perdu all make an appearance
and are best enjoyed in the sun-filled dining room or cute blue courtyard
You can now also visit Madeleine after dark
with a brand new bistro-style dinner menu on offer
In spite of its limited size, Daily Dose has been gaining a fervent following with their friendly service
takeaway coffees and legendary toasties – not to mention their hangover-busting Saturday morning birria tacos
These guys really prove that you don’t have to complicate things
This behemoth on Beaufort Street has made a huge impact since its opening in March of 2022. Like its sister venue, The Old Synagogue, The Beaufort spans multiple levels – each with something different to offer
Hit up the beer garden for drinks in the sunshine
venture into hidden speakeasy Cypher for late night libations
or dive into Lotus’ flavour-packed pan-Asian menu
We’re not short on authentic Italian dining experiences around Perth, and Ischia would easily be up there with the best of ’em
one trip to Ischia is all you need to see why they’ve remained such a popular restaurant in Mt Lawley for so long
We may not be able to go to Italy any time soon
but Ischia will do a good job of placing you right in the gulf of Naples
Succulent beef between a rich, consommé-dipped tortilla? Gooey, toasty quesadillas? Our mouths are watering just thinking about it. Popping up at Scarborough Sunset Markets and the Scarborough Farmers Market, Don Birria has been the word on everyone’s lips since opening in 2020
they expanded to their Mount Lawley location – so it’s even easier to get your hands on that succulent goodness
It’s hard to go past Si’s stunning amphitheatre
which will transport you to the Amalfi coast with not only their décor
sipping on wines and dining on delicious breads and pizza in the afternoon
before switching into Italo disco mode when the sun goes down
Since opening back in 2019, Willing Coffee’s Mount Lawley outpost has become a favourite for locals to swing by for a coffee and a croissant
the evening hours sees the bustling café transform into a somewhat more sultry proposition – one with an expansive
Italian-leaning wine list and similarly Italian-leaning menu
whether you’re nibbling on cacio e pepe flatbread and salumi
You have not lived until you’ve had one of Get Chunky’s sweet-as-hell cookies
warmed up and pumped full of ice cream and all the other toppings in the world
They’ve got vegan and gluten free options too
so now everyone can feel guilty after indulging in some of Perth’s sweetest treats
They say New York is home to the best pizza in the world, and Mack Daddy’s do a pretty terrific job of bringing that vibe to little old Perth
with a big slice option to go with 16″ and the monster 22″ offering – the same size as four regular pizzas
It makes Mack Daddy’s an awesome spot for group dinners
especially thanks to their well-stocked bar and an awesome cocktail list
culinarily adventuring little sister just down the road
Soho Lane‘s all-day brunch menu has plenty of surprises in store for the adventurous eater (Ox Tongue Pastrami Bagel anyone?)
along with great staples and bread from the legends at Miller+Baker
The quirky surrounds of Fez Cafe just behind Fresh Provs have been a popular choice for breakfast and lunch for yonks – and a change of hands in 2023 saw a pivot towards Indonesian flavours alongside their Australian brunch classics
comforting bubur ayam (a Jakarta-style rice porridge)
pandan waffles all make an appearance – but you can also head to Fez on select nights for their newly-launched all-you-can-eat Indonesian buffet
they’ve also launched a special offer for anyone wanting to escape the office or WFH slump: pre-book for $40/pp and you’ll not only have a space to work
but your choice of main meal plus unlimited hot or iced drinks
One of the last remaining taverns around Perth that haven’t gone for the full white wash makeover that so many of this size seem to do, it maintains that ethos throughout with a healthy tap selection, modern pub fare and a rowdy beer garden on the weekends. If you’re looking for a no frills, fun and easy-going afternoon at the pub – bend the knee (and the elbow) at the Queens
Local & Aesthetic is a mixed cafe and retail space that puts a big emphasis on local suppliers
local ingredients and basically local legends in general
It’s always a great vibe for coffee and some eats – they’ll make you a polony and sauce sanga that’ll even make ya mum blush along with heaps of other awesome “bush-food” inspired offerings
Since opening the doors to their Mount Lawley store at the tail end of 2016, Modus have really set the standard to what exciting things a teeny tiny coffee shop can do
From their steadfast commitment to quality coffee
to their collaborations with other top local producers…it was only a matter of time before they had to take it to another level
If their expansion into two more locations means we can get our mitts on their coffee all the more easily
we’re on board – but the Mount Lawley original will always have our heart
This low-key Mount Lawley lunch bar has been a pho and banh mi favourite of locals for years
Tucked away on Beaufort Street in between Walcott Street and Queens Crescent
Sunshine is about as unassuming as it comes – but their flavourful menu has meant a loyal following of devotees
Generous sizes at reasonable prices make it an all round hit
Nazzar has flown a little under the radar since opening in 2023 – but we think the word is well and truly out these days
they’re serving up their signature Mediterranean(ish) twist on brunch three days a week
with a new evening menu from Wednesday-Sunday
Tempting morning menu highlights include the Nazzar take on Turkish eggs
Persian corn fritters – while evenings offer options like harissa-fried squid
sticky lamb ribs or grilled zucchini souvlaki
Those with a sweet tooth are well represented in Northbridge – especially at the aptly named Café Guilty Pleasure
This charming Korean café only opens in the afternoon
but you can stay into the evening and spend some quality time with plenty of adorable desserts
from cakes that go perfectly with a cosy cup of tea or some refreshing bingsu
It’s been earning a legion of fans for good reason
expanded into a second Mount Lawley location that’s just as cute as the Northbridge OG
Budget-conscious flower lovers will need no introduction to Chatsworth
Perched on the corner of Beaufort Street and open since 1995
you can’t miss the huge collection of fresh flowers that wind around the storefront – nor the competitive pricing
While the loss of Planet Video years ago still hurts, Planet Books has remained an incredible Mt Lawley mainstay
Bursting at the bookends with collectables
giftware and literature that spans all genres
and will be able to find you anything you need
It’s done so well they’ve got a second store down on William St in Northbridge
Perth’s got a healthy little vintage store community that continues to grow, and Cool Cats Vintage is absolutely worth a visit if you like your clothing to come with a bit of pop culture history
From old school wrestling and Rodman shirts to other weird and hard-to-find items
While Planet may be a powerhouse in Mount Lawley, a little trip down the road to Beaufort Street Books will net equally awesome results. Not only do they have an extensive selection in store, they’ve also got a huge online selection to look through
and anything they don’t have they’ll find for you quick smart
One of the coolest little shops in Perth and a gamer’s paradise, Retro Collect stocks a heap of old consoles and games. N64s, Playstations, Xboxes… They’ve got ’em all. They’ve also got a bunch of cool collectible figurines, and plenty of other fun and games to geek out on, and a handy online store if you can’t make it IRL
As far as great art framing places around Perth go, Mount Lawley Art Framers is right up there with the best – super friendly and helpful whatever it is you’re looking for
and won’t financially cripple you for the trouble
They’ve also got a fantastic selection of art pieces to buy in store
some larger feature pieces along with plenty of smaller options that make great gifts
The Astor Theatre has been occupying centre stage of this busy locale since 1919
This multi-purpose facility hosts live music
comedy shows and community events all throughout the year
The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts is nestled right in Mount Lawley. This means there is a plethora of highly skilled creatives putting on shows all the time. Enjoy anything from live music to theatre and dance. Head on over to their website and pick up a ticket
Located just off Second Avenue, the Normcore’s store puts fragrance firmly at the forefront
Showcasing niche fragrance for you and your home
Kitowa and Riraku well represented – although you’ll also see Melbourne-based Mihan Aromatics
northern Italian historic perfumer Acca Kappa
Vacant land along Guildford Road and East Parade in Mt Lawley will be developed to provide social and affordable housing as part of Round 1 of the Housing Diversity Pipeline
The development will create new homes for people close to facilities such as the train line and bus services
The site is currently in the final stages of procurement after being released to market through an Expressions of Interest (EOI) in early 2023 with a competitive closed tender process seeking a suitable development proposal and a proponent
The 1.4ha site comprises 34 lots and is owned by the Western Australian Planning Commission (WAPC)
Lands and Heritage (DPLH) is currently preparing the site for new residential development
which includes extensive contamination remediation works and land assembly to create new development lots
Once DPLH has completed this work and a development proponent has been appointed
the land will be available to commence development.
The site is contaminated with asbestos containing material (ACM) understood to be the result of historically imported fill and demolition.
Prior to new residential development being permitted to occur
the site must be remediated to eliminate contamination and reclassified for residential land use
in-line with Department of Health (DoH) and Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) requirements
Site remediation will involve extensive earthworks to excavate the impacted areas of soil and process the soil to remove the ACM which will be transported off site and disposed of at an appropriate waste facility
The clean treated soil will then be redistributed across the site
enabling works will begin with the adjustment of the current site fencing
moving it to the edge of the laneway to establish a safe perimeter for residents
These early works will then progress to soil excavation and removal of site material – currently estimated to commence in early December
As there is asbestos contamination underground and within the root systems of several tree stumps
workers will follow safe work protocols during this work.
Works are expected through to January 2025
with some disruption over the Christmas holiday period.
There is currently no risk to public health or safety as the ACM is in the form of bonded fragments
is in a good condition and remains undisturbed
No friable asbestos or asbestos fibres have been detected in the soil
DPLH has recently fenced the site to restrict public access and to limit any potential for soil disturbances to occur
The remediation process will be closely managed by qualified environmental scientists who specialise in asbestos contamination remediation to ensure the process is carried out in the safest and most effective manner and in accordance with the relevant DWER and DoH guidelines
There may be some impact to the immediately surrounding area during the works such as noise
dust and traffic because of the operation of machinery on site
and trucks transporting material to and from the site.
DPLH will be engaged with the City of Vincent to ensure appropriate site and traffic management measures are in place
All works will be closely monitored and managed to ensure a safe working environment and to minimise impacts on the surrounding area and the local road network
Detailed information was sent to residents within the immediate vicinity of the site before remediation work commenced.
All efforts will be made to minimise any impact on people’s daily routine. Should there be any immediate impacts from works on site, such as restricted access or fallen fences, please contact the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage via email housingpipeline@dplh.wa.gov.au.
A key objective for development of this site is to ensure the retention of as many existing mature trees as possible while permitting a balanced and practical housing development outcome
It will be possible to retain and ensure the protection of 25 of the 35 existing mature trees on site during the remediation works
to successfully remove soil contamination and achieve a reclassification that permits the site to be developed for residential purposes it was necessary to remove 10 existing trees
Contamination investigations found the root systems of trees across the site to be impacted by ACM contamination
To remediate the soil completely requires extensive excavation around the tree root systems and this work will be detrimental to the health and stability of the trees
The 10 trees that were removed include two large Hill’s Weeping Fig trees located along Guildford Road and a number of other trees in various locations across the site
Tree removal was required as an option of last resort and extensive planning has been completed to ensure remediation can accommodate the retention of the other remaining 25 trees on site
The remediation approach ensures multiple clusters of medium and high value trees of endemic and native species are retained in prominent locations across the site
A professional arborist will oversee the remediation works to ensure the tree protection
Future development of the site will be designed to protect the retained trees
New development will also need to provide new deep soil planting areas and landscaping in line with relevant planning requirements
The site will ultimately be developed to deliver new housing with a minimum of 20 per cent of the dwellings being allocated for social housing
a detailed planning and design process will finalise the development proposal for the site
It is expected the site will be developed in line with the applicable local planning requirements
More details of the development will be provided as the project progresses and the local community will be notified of any required consultation that may occur.

Almost exactly a year after opening their Perth taproom
Australian craft brewer Fox Friday have announced that they have entered voluntary administration
“It’s with heavy hearts that we share some tough news
Sarah and I have made the difficult decision to place Fox Friday and subsidiaries (Moonah Hotel and Cellars
Carwyn Cellars) into voluntary administration with the appointment of McGrathNicol as the administrator,” wrote Benn Hooper in a statement published to Instagram last week
“When we purchased Fox Friday in March 2019
it was just the two of us in a small factory unit located in Moonah
brewing beer during the week and running a makeshift taproom on the weekends
we’ve built something we’re immensely proud of
we’ve faced significant financial challenges that have brought us to this point
Our financial lender could not meet their obligations for our capital projects.”
“We’re committed to keeping it business as usual during this time
though you may notice some changes to our venues operating days and hours
While we understand that there will be some uncertainty as a result of this decision
we very much intend to come through the other side of this and we hope that Fox Friday and its subsidiaries will continue to operate well into the future
We’ll keep you updated as things progress.”

it’s been a long time coming and we’re excited to have you check it out.”

before heading north back up to Karijini Eco Retreat and to Hearson Cove for a spectacular experience dining under the stars during the Staircase to the Moon

with new owner Harry set to continue the Thompson Road tradition of sip-slinging

so we’re looking forward to an opportunity to learn from the pros at sister venues Ciao Dandy and The Standard
Say arrivederci to Cosy Del’s Wednesday night pizzettas

We’ve got absolutely huge news for the gluten intolerant and coeliac amongst us: Bad Love Burgers announced last week that 99% of their menu is now available gluten free
The transition has been a huge undertaking from the team
who’ve worked on each item one by one to ensure that they stay as delicious as ever
while being accessible to the gluten free and coeliac community of Perth – in fact
they’ve been quietly testing the new menu for six months “with exactly zero customers noticing a change in product or a change in quality.”
“On the contrary,” the announcement continued
“I feel like the process that was undertaken to review
improve and ultimately change our recipes has resulted in these products tasting even better than they were previously
such was the detail and consideration our chefs have put into ensuring this change was executed seamlessly and to the same quality standard we hold all food to; whether it contains gluten or not.”
“This was especially noticeable to our fried chicken and popcorn chicken items – resulting in a plumper
juicier protein while still maintaining our signature twice fried crunchy as all fuck coating
It also means that all of our fryers in the kitchen are dedicated gluten-free as standard
ensuring ancillary items like our chips are now mitigated from cross contamination too.”
It’s important to note that the kitchen will not be 100% gluten free – Bad Love’s signature burgers can still be served on a potato bun that contains gluten
and a handful of sauces and garnishes could not be made gluten free – however they’ll make every effort to avoid cross contamination with glove changes
and gluten free buns baked in Gala’s dedicated gluten free bakery
Love certainly is in the air – or at least, we’re definitely loving the new offerings from both Bad Love and Northbridge’s Bar Love
Hospo guns Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh will be putting their world-class mixology skills to the test with their brand new bottomless

in-house baked treats from a dedicated pastry team
plus all-day faves that will be familiar from the Daisies and Other Side menus – not to mention coffee locally roasted by Dukes
and exactly the kind of place you’ll brag about discovering first,” said co-owners Sam Kaye and Pia Prior

with a little double entendre to keep things interesting.”
A few weeks ago, we wrote about the sad closure of Vic Park’s Hong Kong Tea Café – happily
we can report that our sadness was short-lived
with the bustling café announcing that they’ve relaunched from the other week (Tuesday
We look forward to checking out its new era…

We’ve been poring through the recommendations
critiquing and delving deep into our hearts…
All in order to bring you our comprehensive guide to Perth’s best cafes
Recently moving from their long-time Subi spot to the gorgeous surrounds of Perth City Farm, we can’t get enough of Be Free and their wholefood offerings
Utilising hyper-local produce (including veggies from the neighbouring City Farm garden and honey from its resident bee hive!) and making just about everything in-house
their menu maximises flavour alongside feel-good nourishment – and plenty of plant-based and gluten free options if that’s your speed
They’ve also got a stunning selection of house-baked treats alongside pastries from Teeter Bakery
This itty-bitty coffee window may be small, but it’s certainly mighty. Owned by Courtney Gibb and his wife Simone, the former head baker for Mary Street Bakery manages to produce an impressive daily selection of freshly baked bread, pastries and other delicious treats from Cheerio’s pint-sized kitchen – along with coffees that are worth the stop alone
It’s been less than five years since opening their Subiaco flagship, but Community Coffee Co. has been going from strength to strength ever since
they’ve expanding into another three locations
two of which are in the Perth CBD – one a takeaway window
Their latest addition has been their Duncraig spot slinging diner-style brekkies
including a controversial yet delicious chip butty and bone marrow spag bol toast
While the Dine by Arrival Hall menu isn’t extensive
or a Black Angus tenderloin sandwich on offer
the fact that it’s inside a furniture store would be a detriment
except that Arrival Hall’s space is so stylish
so serene… We’re happy for an excuse to linger
The little sibling of beloved Bayswater brunch favourite tbsp. (RIP), Forklore is bringing the same deliciousness to City West
An Japanese-leaning menu includes comforting dishes like tonkotsu porridge
mentaiko udon topped with a slow-cooked egg
temptingly golden curry pan and one of the best chicken katsu sandos we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying
Tucked away down a Northbridge laneway, pint-sized Giant Coffee is well worth a bit of urban exploration
the tiny spot is serving up some of Perth’s best coffee
with beans courtesy of local roasters Daylight (batch brews feature Twin Peaks single origin)
grab an einspanner – topped with whipped cream
it’s a pretty darn excellent way to get through a chilly morning
All of the expertise, experience, and passion for coffee-making accrued through years of running six other cafe ventures is distilled into Hemingway
from the father and son duo behind Mo Espresso Group
the CBD cafe is defined both by its excess
Extravagantly whizz-bang gear – like the hypnotic Poursteady
or the super-sleek Modbar espresso machine
while both the menu and fit-out are pared-back perfection
as well as legendary local roasters Twin Peaks
the coffee is just as good as you’d expect – although you’ll definitely be tempted by a toastie
The brainchild of champion barista Ziggy Varamulia (a friendly face you’re sure to have spotted across Perth’s best cafés), March Coffee Studio brings an experimental
world-class approach to coffee to a CBD office block – not to mention great vibes
While you can still get your classic flat whites and long macs
those with a more adventurous palette can delve into rare beans
experimental concoctions and designer lattes
Perth (Lobby of Government Offices of Western Australia)
We were pretty jazzed about Miller + Baker’s opening at the end of 2019
and our excitement hasn’t really abated since then
you’ve got to be pretty committed to quality
plus a coffee and pastry for right now – if you can resist one of those gourmet sammies
You arrive, panting, at the top of Jacob’s Ladder… you probably deserve a pretty good breakfast now, right? Luckily, Mount Street Breakfast Bar is just around the corner
A limited yet considered menu awaits – think crispy falafel with barley tabbouleh and poached eggs
or crushed avocado and roasted tomatoes with labneh and za’atar
When the sun is a-shinin’ and the birds are a-chirpin’, this Northbridge park becomes the hottest destination in town – and with coffees this good, it’s no wonder why. Parkside opened up back in September of 2022 and they’ve been brewing up a storm ever since
becoming a community hub for locals and slinging some tasty treats from their neighbours at Miller + Baker
We were awaiting the arrival of Preston’s with bated breath – and the Bulwer Street deli has not disappointed
their stellar lineup of sandwiches blends a background in fine dining with nostalgic faves – think house-made fish fingers topped with a mountain of shredded lettuce and a caper-studded
or breakfast muffins paired with the spicy tang of their signature “Preston’s sauce”
the branding and fit out has brought together some of Australia’s best creatives into one very stylish space
How could you resist those seductive eyes? Staring at you from Smooth Operator’s signature cups
you’ll be ordering another round before you know it
pint-sized interior is a gem amongst the slightly dusty west end of the CBD
with a high-quality coffee game that draws a bustling crowd to Milligan Street every morning
Shop 4/938 Hay Street (Enter on Milligan Street)
We’ve said it before, but we’re a sucker for the opulent surrounds of the CBD’s State Buildings. We’d take any excuse to head there, but for Telegram
timber-clad box is cranked open every morning to serve up some of Perth’s best coffee
with a reputation for consistency and attention to detail – which now extends all the way to roasting their own beans out of East Vic Park’s shared roasting operation Modern Coffee
Tucked away down a CBD arcade, and barely big enough for the few tables it does have, teeny-tiny Toffee is a little slice of Germany in Perth’s city centre
Amongst the roster of home-style dishes you’ll find a bevy of baked goods
they’ll also sort you out with coffee or a nourishing cold-pressed juice
Artem has transformed over the years from a must-find coffee pop-up into a long-running must-visit for coffee-lovers – with two locations including a takeaway window in Highgate and lovely new digs in Applecross
Coffee ain’t all they’re good at though – we’d recommend timing your visit to coincide with a weekend chef’s special
which run the gamut from Korean-inspired Philly cheesesteaks to fried chicken burgers
matcha mousse or a weekly changing focaccia… Not to mention that legendary Reuben
which has remained a firm crowd favourite for years
Nestled away down Arcade 669, it would be easy to forget about Bossman – if it wasn’t so damn good
their focus is on delivering quality coffee; made using Leftfield beans
the service is bright – sweetened by a locally-baked Greek treat to accompany your coffee
Attached to skin and wellness mecca Fleur, Bridges expands their holistic wellness ethos into a nourishing café space next door
pared-back fit out combines with nutrient-packed smoothies
loaded sourdough toasts and killer Micrology coffee – take a deep breathe
relax and let the tranquil vibes take over
The almost-constant line out the door will attest to the fact that Chu has been killing it since opening their William Street bakery in 2015
loaded toasts and donuts are equally delish – not to mention their coffee
Our favourite is the chilli passionfruit donut – filled with tangy passionfruit custard and then rolled in a chilli-sugar mix
this donut caused us to exclaim to a friend
“This is a flavour sensation!” The things you do for love
North Perth’s amazing coffee per capita quota is almost getting out of hand – and Engine Room Espresso plays a big part
First opened in 2014 by a group of coffee-loving firefighters
Engine Room has maintained its commitment to quality coffee and friendly service through a change in ownership in 2018
bagel and schmear and soak up the NoPo vibes in their back laneway
It just takes a morning spent down at Doubleview’s Folk & Merchant to see what a neighbourhood stalwart it is – whether locals are swinging past the window for their morning coffee on the go
sitting down for a nourishing bowl or bagel
browsing the goodies in their retail space or setting the kids loose on the great little kids’ play area out the back
you really do feel like you’re In Good Hands
From the same crew as the excellent Bossman (listed above and located just across the road), Beaufort Street’s Lady Annie for Mount Lawley’s coffee-seekers
bright and perfect for soaking up some sunshine (watching the world go by out the front or making friends with some pups in the rear courtyard) with a stellar cuppa coffee
Local & Aesthetic is one of Mount Lawley’s newer additions; a combo cafe and retail space that puts a big emphasis on local suppliers
local ingredients and basicaly being local legends
It’s always a great vibe for coffee and some eats – they’ll make you a polony and sauce sanga that’ll even make ya mum blush
along with heaps of other awesome “bush-food” style offerings
Supplying some of Perth’s best cafe’s for yonks, Micrology has built a reputation for being one of the best of the best
the local roaster has made it even easier to get your hands on their delicious brews
Since opening the doors to their Mount Lawley store at the tail end of 2016, Modus have really set the standard to what exciting things a teeny tiny coffee shop can do
to their collaborations with other top local producers… it was only a matter of time before they had to take it to another level
in 2021 they expanded to a third location in Wembley
Nogi Lane has become a smash (avo) hit with Dianella locals thanks to an all-day brunch menu that’s bristling with all the classics
along with some very naughty extra offerings
The baked sticky date pancakes with caramel popcorn will just about ruin any sweet tooth out there
but we’re eyeing off that pork belly potato hash: crispy
tangy and a truly stunning way to start off your day
Plant Playground‘s colourful
plant-filled warehouse is a funky delight amongst the industrial surrounds of Osborne Park
The crew are experts at all things plants – from hydroponic gardening to ready-to-gift books and accessories – but they’ll also sort you out with a damn good coffee or kombucha while you’re there
Since opening in 2018, Queen of Leeds has been quietly amassing a fervent following. With great coffee (via Proud Mary and Loaded)
excellent sammies and some next-level cake action
it’s no wonder – plus the friendly service that’s just as sweet

a truffle mushroom melt on buttery slices of milk loaf
If you could see just how many Satchmo bagels we’ve tallied on our delivery apps
when you’re laying in bed on Sunday morning
not quite ready to face the day… you gotta do what you gotta do
Neighbourhood oasis Stomp Coffee is the perfect balm to a rocky morning
Pull up a chair in the picturesque courtyard
order a coffee made with beans from an impressive roster of featured roasters

sumac scrambled eggs or quinoa porridge topped with fresh fruit
The Little Bay really is pretty-as-a-picture
Whether you’re an aspiring influencer or simply want a good view with your brunch
The Little Bay’s layout and location is almost impossible to beat
While you can still get your classics like big breakfast and eggs benny (served on a croissant!)
the menu ups the ante with breakfast gnocchi and Turkish eggs… which would go really well with a Bloody Mary
An espresso bar started by a property developer? It hardly fills you with inspiration… but Willing proves to be the exception. Joining forces with expert baristas, Willing is inspired by 1950s
with coffee firmly the focus – although there’s still room for some cycling paraphernalia
they expanded to Mount Lawley with a second cafe on the corner of Central Avenue and Clifton Crescent
which transforms after dark into sultry Euro wine haven Bar Vino
This welcoming café just opened in Myaree, but we’re already singing its praises. At Home Coffee Co. is dishing up Asian-inspired brunch – think creamy tamago or nori cheese toasties
umami-spiked scrambled or their take on shakshuka
Killer coffee? Holy Bagel Co bagels? Best Wishes keeps things simple
this crew has built up a reputation as the best place in Freo to pick up your daily coffee – and in spite of their super-cool branding and merch
The wholesale, big boy bakery of the Hot Bread crew (North Street Store, Little Loaf Lunch Bar, Wards Central Dining), Big Loaf is the epicentre of all things baked
While the industrial setting may not scream “sit here and enjoy a leisurely breakfast”
it has the same humble charm as a must-visit country roadhouse bakery
with treats this delicious… The setting doesn’t really matter
The team from Young George has ventured down the road to open up Ethos – a zero-waste
Eastern European-leaning neighbourhood deli and dining room
House made charcuterie and small goods and killer sarnies are just the tip of the iceberg
with the bar’s offerings just as exciting a prospect if you’re there later in the day (or earlier
Recently moving from their long-time Northbridge digs to a new location in Freo, Flora & Fauna continues to leap from strength to strength
Vegan offerings run the gamut from banana bread (a huge wedge
to tropical waffles topped with mango and raw salted caramel
to savoury treats like Mexican mac n cheese
And not that gram-worthiness is the ultimate barometer of food
but we absolutely dare you to resist photographing these technicolour
As coffee roasters, Grouch & Co. are committed to a high standard of quality
roasting in small batches and curating seasonal blends that are sure to delight
It’s no wonder that the cafe side of things reflects the same approach
Tip top customer service takes the experience from great

they’ve since expanded into the dining space next door – making it the perfect spot for cosy sit-down brunches as well
We’re head over heels for this retro-inspired diner that just opened in White Gum Valley from the same team as Good Things and Double Double coffee. Lovers brings a new-wave nostalgia to life – not just in the speccy diner-ish fit out
but in its interpretation of North American classics through an antipodean lens
There’s something about North Freo… the sun always seems to be shining, everyone’s just a bit more beautiful and carefree… and there, in the middle of it all, is Ooh Coffee
This petite espresso bar is pairing great coffee with easy breezy service that is perfectly suited to its chilled out surrounds
This Market Street sandwich bar has been a fast favourite, drawing fans from north and south for their next-level sandwiches and batch coffee that’s almost as good. A must-visit anytime you’re in the south, Peggy’s just do it all so well
This Preston Street space has seen a number of (beloved) iterations over the years, including Little Matcha Girl and more recently, Kopi Seru. Opening in December 2023 as Preston Street Coffee
they’re taking things back to basics: great coffee
The former is thanks to Blacklist Coffee Roasters
and the latter focuses on well-executed toasties
This itty-bitty bagel shop operating out of a South Terrace shipping container had us immediately on board… Was it the South Freo sunshine
Each alone would have made a compelling case – together
Attadale’s The Neighbourhood has become a firm favourite for locals
with their consistently stellar coffee and delicious brunches – which are as delicious as they are Instagrammable
Beans are courtesy of bi-coastal roasters Dukes
plant-filled bottle shop makes this one you can’t miss
Fine dining meets brunch
Add in a dash of Middle Eastern influences and a partnership with burger hotshots Juicy Buns
Even better than all these great elements though
is the community-building and philanthropic approach they’ve fostered since day one
Venn manages to blend their top-tier coffee game with almost astonishingly friendly vibes
Their original location was first established in 2021
before they expanded with “Little Venn” across the road and then
a new outpost in burgeoning foodie hub Bicton Central – where you’ll find more of their signature house-roasted beans available to take home
965 Albany Highway East Victoria ParkBicton Central
One of our favourite bakeries, Wild is hitting home runs on more than just their funky
Head into their South Freo bakery (or new North Freo location!) and feast your eyes on their cabinet of treats – from tarts and pastries
pies and slices of pizza bigger than your head… We know where we’re heading this Sunday for lunch
Sisters Victoria and Annabella La Pegna have put their continental twist on a Claremont corner store, just around the corner from where they grew up and their family’s landmark eatery Bellissimo. Stop by Bottega Deli for crowd-drawing panini
prosciutto or mortadella and overflowing with stracciatella
cucina povera-inspired rotating pastas or perch out the front with an espresso and sfogliatella and watch the world go by
One of Perth’s cafe stalwarts, Boucla has become a Subi institution over the two decades it’s been open
leafy courtyard out the back!) is super cozy for your next coffee date
but their cakes are the real star of the show – with a daily roster that includes a sweet soufra that keeps us up at night
West Leederville bottle shop The Wine Thief boasts a lovingly curated collection of wine, beer, cider and spirits – but if it’s a bit early in the day to crack open the vino, their attached café The Coffee Thief is well worth a visit
While their stellar coffee will certainly steal your heart
you can also ward off hunger with some tasty baked treats or their cabinet full of sammies
It’s been less than five years since opening their Subiaco flagship, but Community Coffee Co. has been going from strength to strength ever since. Stop by for stellar coffees (they’re also the brains behind roasters Loot Coffee)
sausage and egg muffins) and some great opportunities to pat Subi’s cutest dogs
Opening in the middle of 2023, Glyde has been quietly establishing itself as a Mossie Park must-visit
Settle in out the front for top-rate coffees in the sunshine
or grab one of the seats inside the bright and airy cafe and dive into a classic brekkie plate: smashed avo
or nasi goreng topped with an enticingly gooey fried egg
It should come as no surprise that Goods would make its way onto this list. Arguably our current obsession, the new spot has been cooked up by the crew at Modus – it serves as the central bakery for the group’s three other cafes
as well as a stellar destination of its own
restrained retro fitout completes the vibe
Make sure to grab a homemade chutney for the road
Brunch favourite Hylin has gotta be your next Sunday morning destination
Pull up a chair under the trees out the front and take in their lush menu – whether you’re after a quick bagel or their impressive smashed avo
the bar out the back (appropriately called…Back Bar) is a leafy oasis with great bar eats
After finally making it down to Kith over the summer break
it’s easy to see why every man and his dog is all over this Nedlands café
the gram-friendly fit out definitely took up a chunk of our camera roll – but we were also compelled to return two days in a row for another taste of that hot honey focaccia and a side of curly fries
Super friendly service sweetened the sting of having to wait for a table
mingling out the front along with the rest of Perth
We’re already concocting an excuse for another visit…
It’s no secret that we’re big fans of a pancake stack, any day of the week. Luckily, so is Mellow Coffee
Taking over the space that used to be Yellow Pancake (RIP)
they’ve wasted no time in drawing crowds eager for their impressive list of indulgent brunch items including fluffy buttermilk pancakes
crunchy chicken waffles and a Greek bowl featuring a yoghurt stuffed tomato
and in 2021 they expanded to a third location in Wembley
We can’t shut up about North Street Store – not that anyone really needs telling at this point
In spite of a few particularly vocal locals when they first got going
With the addition of an ever-increasing roster of sister stores (Little Loaf Bakery in South Freo
and Wards in Shenton Park) these guys are pumping out even more of the good stuff
Subi’s Obi has been the talk of the town
becoming one of Perth’s most well-loved coffee spots even in its earliest iterations as a pop-up
They kept things simple while they worked on a more permanent iteration
with top notch Micrology brews and Toastface sammies to cure any rumbling tummies – and their expanded café is now open
with extra bites on offer and the same great vibes
From the same crew as beloved Subi coffee spot Obi (above!), hole-in-the-wall spot Slow Daze ups the ante with the same killer coffee and even more brekkie choices for rumbling tums
but we dare you to resist the call of that sausage and egg muffin…
OK, perhaps this is cheating given that we’ve already, technically, included North Street Store. But having just enjoyed a delightful full Irish brekkie and some “Hollandaise Delights” over the weekend, we can’t keep quiet! The latest from the Hot Bread crew, Wards are taking a slightly fancier approach to their solid-gold food offerings
a charming historical setting and all the deliciousness we already know and love
Charming and unpretentious, 3.8 Baysie exudes community
Named after the hungriest gal of all (the Bayswater Bridge

ancho-spiced fried potatoes with slow cooked beef mince
No guilty pleasures here – just plates you can feel very good about
Sweet tooths and coffee fiends are well looked after with this new addition. Hop Café has quickly been making fans with their cellar-door style coffee tastings
featuring a rotating roster of local roasters
as well as their decadent dessert pairings that are all made in-house
Their Vic Park outpost has all the things you love about Modus
can be happily enjoyed lounging in the sun in the neighbouring park
Tucked away down a suburban street in Kensington, the Little Banksia is a delightful hidden gem
This cosy cafe is plating up some truly impressive fare
whether it’s some of our favourite pancakes in Perth
or a truly breathtaking fried chicken burger
It feels like the sun’s always shining at the Little Banksia – due in no small part to their always smiling

Nothing beats a good old-fashioned BYO restaurant
or a couple of bottles of vino and feast the night away with your finest friends and/or family
especially when we’re living in a cost-of-living crisis
so we’ve tried to cover a variety of different flavours and locations north
Back in 2023 much-loved neighbourhood wine bar and restaurant Casa expand next door with a takeaway pizza joint – aptly named Casa Pizza Wine
these fluffy-crusted pies take an unconventional approach to classic flavours – think marinara drizzled with kombu oil
roasted mushrooms topped with verdant persillade or an appropriately Casa-tinged take on a Hawaiian with a piquant habanero and pineapple salsa
This North Perth neighbourhood fave may be low-key, but that makes its the exact kinda BYO spot we’re chasing! And, their picture-perfect bento boxes are a must. Named for the bento boxes traditionally sold at train stations, Ekiben serves up a selection that you’ll want to stay a while and savour
They’ve got plenty of gluten free options and the service is always warm and friendly – one of the best
It would be easy to over-complicate things, but put quite simply: Monsterella gets a lot of things just right
A selection of pasta that will tempt even the most fanatic pizza fiend
It was a fortuitous few weeks that saw both Hunter Bread and Rym Tarng open in Bicton Central
is pumping out some pretty unforgettable Thai plates from the 16-seat restaurant
Pork and prawn donuts are enough of a reason to visit
but the signature pork jowl will certainly help seal the deal
Northbridge’s best kept secret (that’s always super busy)
Tra Vinh’s mix of Vietnamese and Chinese noodle dishes is one of the best
the staff are always super friendly and depending on how much booze you bring
Tucked away down a Northbridge arcade, Francoforte has been our faithful spaghetti stallion since opening way back in 2013
guanciale carbonara and kale pesto remain as comfortingly delicious as they were back in our misspent youths – combined with its casual atmosphere it’s the perfect kick off point to a big night out in Northbridge
We’d practically take a bath in laksa, we love it so much – so it’s no wonder KCH got on our radar shortly after they opened in 2019
KCH takes its name from Sarawak’s capital Kuching
home to a distinctive laksa that is both creamy and tangy
But that’s not where it ends – with plenty of modern takes on Malaysian classics
plus weekly specials that will have you frantically spamming the group chat
For one of the finest Japanese dining experiences in Perth, it’s hard to go past Tsukaya
While purists may balk at menu inclusions like tacos and umami fries
We could talk for days about Perth’s pizza offerings, but most of the time, we’ll end up back at Rossonero
the garage-turned-pizzeria balances classical simplicity with crowd-pleasing modernity – including a welcoming attitude towards BYO
Nestled on the corner of Scarborough Beach Road and Gildercliffe Street, you might not see Pizzaca Caffe as you pass by
Pizzaca pump out amazing food like woodfire pizzas
You’d be forgiven for missing this unassuming little Thai spot along Bulwer Street, but it’s worth stopping in for. The quintessential Thai neighbourhood spot, Khanom is small
One of Fremantle’s best and longest-standing restaurants, there’s a reason Capri has been around since the ’50s
They’re now onto their fourth generation of family members helping run the joint
homely vibes will have you back over and over again
A neighbourhood Italian joint seems like a safe bet for BYO enthusiasts – and even better when it’s this good! The Secret Italian has become a favourite of Scarbs locals for their low-key vibes and delicious Italian fare
Sticking on the Italian tip (they just know how to wine and dine)
Valdarno’s is in an unassuming little part of Dalkeith
serving up authentic Italian to a very happy neighbourhood
Big servings means you’re more than likely going to end up taking some home with you
and that’s after bringing your own booze with you because it’s BYO every day of the week (closed Sundays/Mondays)
One of Perth’s most legendary (and best value) degustations, the only issue is how bloody hard it to get a booking – that’s how popular Marumo is
but if you can plan ahead (and drop in at the bottle shop en route) it’s an absolute delight
At Threecoins
comforting Italian classics are melded with that signature bold flavour and high voltage approach… Think pinsa topped with mortadella
And on Mondays and Tuesdays you can BYO wine
Boasting a Mediterranean-inspired lineup of chargrilled share plates, Lady of Ro will take you straight to the cobbled pathways of Greece in no time. The owner is also renowned for her desserts (you’ll be familiar if you’ve stopped in at Boucla next door)
so make sure you leave some room for her chocolate ricotta cake
Outside a nice can of Coke, is there anything better than beers and dumplings? Fortunately Mom Dumpling House in East Vic Park is happy for you to have both
and you’ll be kept busy with her massive lineup of dumplings and noodle dishes
Down the road from Mom’s is The Prophet
rocking some fantastic Middle Eastern specialties
just about everyone we’ve ever met is a big fan of The Prophet – and how can you not be
friendly service is matched only by the deliciousness of their dishes

A former Mount Lawley Senior High School performing arts student has landed a role in a major Hollywood movie starring multi award-winning actor Mark Wahlberg
Actor Orla Saphron spent two days on a Sydney film set playing a college student in Wahlberg’s upcoming crime thriller
Saphron also had another career highlight working closely with director Shane Black best known for Lethal Weapon.
Former Mount Lawley Senior High School student Orla Saphron went through the school's specialist arts program.
The 26-year-old attended Mount Lawley Senior High School where she took part in the specialist visual and performing arts program.
Saphron said the unique three-year course at the school gave her the confidence to explore performing arts.
“In primary school I was the shy girl who read a lot of books and loved drawing
but when I started the specialist visual and performing arts program I fell in love with performing and realised it was something I could actually pursue as a career,” she said.
“It gave me so many of the skills and knowledge I need for this career
to exploring the wide range of acting techniques and learning how to utilise them to best work for me in different roles.”
Mount Lawley Senior High School principal Lesley Street said the school’s highly regarded program provided immersion and extension in the arts
with a focus on industry connections.
“Throughout her time in the specialist visual and performing arts program
Orla exhibited a passion and dedication to the performing arts
actively participating in multiple school productions and developing her love for acting,” Ms Street said.
“This highly competitive program admits only 32 students from a large pool of auditioning candidates across disciplines such as visual art
“Throughout their three years in the program
students engage with various industry professionals
“This collaboration and the support of like-minded peers help students develop crucial skills such as teamwork
preparing them for success in any future path they choose.”
Program coordinator Moya Thomas said she was delighted to hear of Saphron’s success.
“It’s always wonderful when good things happen to good people
I wish her all the best for the future,” she said.
Saphron hopes by landing this gig she can inspire current students in the program to pursue their dreams.
“This is a tough industry but if it's your passion and your dream
then you will be successful no matter what
I mean living a fulfilling and exciting life doing what you love doing,” she said.
no matter how hard or impossible they may seem
you're already living your dream just by continuing to do what you love.
“As I say to everyone who is pursuing this career
it is all about the long game and enjoying the journey.
improving your skills and surrounding yourself with likeminded people.
There will be many ups and downs in this industry so as long as you have other outlets and hobbies to keep you fulfilled and satisfied
Saphron is one of many graduates of the program to pursue a career in the arts
Other success stories include Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things
Shannon Berry (The Wilds) and Austen Wilmot (The Surfer) who recently walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with Nicolas Cage.

Perth builder developer, Willing Property, is bringing a touch of New York to the Perth suburb of Mount Lawley with the launch of their latest off the plan apartment development
Willing Property called in local architecture firm Klopper & Davis to design a building that takes inspiration from the Big Apple's famous Flatiron building
a building which has stood in the heart of Manhattan since 1902
West Residences is characterised by its angular forms and large private balconies
Klopper & Davis Architects Founder and Director, Sam Klopper, says like the famous Flatiron building, the site of West forms the junction between the orderly and the sublime
"The avenues of Mount Lawley are crossed by West Parade and the train line
creating an opportunity to celebrate this contrast with a beautiful angled form
the local context around West Parade was developed during a period of hopeful optimism of our local gold rush and
like the explosive development of New York
speaks to and embraces this joyful vision of a greater and broader future
"West draws on these connections to celebrate the beauty of the existing context and the wonder and the new to create a timeless and ageless icon."
and efficient ventilation to offer spacious and comfortable living
They are designed with custom kitchens and bathrooms
incorporating designer lighting and Miele appliances
Buyers will have the option of two different colour schemes
The Steam colour scheme features refined details of copper
complemented by warm and pared back touches of timber
while the Patina scheme offers residents a more bold and lively approach
with sophisticated hues of deep greens contrasting with vivid whites
Residents will benefit from several amenities
reflecting Willing's commitment to sustainability
Willing Property's construction arm will handle the build of the striking development
Willing Property was founded by Tim Willing in 2012, but the Willing family name has been synonymous with Perth development since the late 1960s
Tim's father Doug built homes across Western Australia from 1969
with Tim and his brother Dayne growing up on building sites

pizza… we can’t get enough of Perth’s best Italian restaurants
Perth’s latest culinary enfant terrible, we can’t get enough of Testun’s irreverent attitude and big flavours
There are certain openings that fly under the radar, and others that become the talk of not just the Perth Is OK! office, but the whole darn town. From the same team as the also excellent No Mafia (see below!) and Balthazar, Vin Populi has been one of 2023’s early standouts – and the pumping dining room is a testament to the good word travelling like wildfire
a late night negroni or luscious bowl of pasta
Offering a delightfully intimate dining experience, La Madonna Nera is pairing some truly delectable libations with a snack game that’s hard to beat. Stop by for some seriously good snack game during aperitivo hour
one of their regional deep-dives as part of the Granturismo series
or simply head to the seductively dark interior for nuovo-Italian date night deliciousness
Keen for a more intimate vibe? Head next door to Monsterella’s bougier sister wine bar Mummucc‘, favourite night-off haunt of dozens of Perth chefs
but one glance at those Skull Island prawns with bottarga butter and chilli vinegar
or the octopus arrostocini with a fiery nduja oil… Well
With a distinctly Sardinian influence, Acqua e Sale’s menu is both exciting and comforting: the familiar sight of salt and pepper calamari
pecorino and mint… we haven’t even got started with the pizzas
with include traditional seadas – house made Sardinian fried pastry
Who needs a trip to Italy when you’ve got Acqua e Sale
Now run by the fourth generation of Pizzales, Capri is standing strong against the changing whims of fashions
Harking back to the hustle and bustle of ’50s Freo
interior and service punctuated by old-school touches like complimentary soup and bread
All hotel dining is not created equal, and the proof is in the proverbial pudding when it comes to Santini
The menu manages to balance its accessibility with a focus and attention to detail that ensures any less-favourable hotel dining cliches are satisfyingly avoided
while its stylish fit-out transitions effortlessly from business-friendly long lunch to dimly-lit dinner service
This list would hardly be complete without at least one wall-to-wall mural, right? Luckily, Ischia’s Beaufort Street dining room features its island namesake
complete with azure water and volcanic cliffs
with plenty of crowd-pleasers: grilled octopus served atop a tomato salad
A stalwart of the Highgate dining scene for years
Simple but luxurious. Comforting but refined. Lulu La Delizia strikes the perfect balance between the high-brow
cheffy approach that sets a restaurant apart
and the comfort factor that keeps everyone coming back
single page menu is accentuated with hard-to-pass up specials that showcase local and seasonal produce
Inglewood (OK, now technically Bedford) neighbourhood spot Cecchi’s has fast become a favourite amongst locals for their share-friendly Italian plates and charming vibes
While the small plates are worth a trip by themselves
the pasta can sure hold its own – from bucatini with Shark Bay cuttlefish to zaffron paccheri with porcini and duck sausage
It could be said that No Mafia’s specialty is “Stuff That Goes Really Well With a Glass of Wine”
is a category we’re well and truly on board for
While we’re a fan of perching on the front balcony for some Spritz-fuelled people watching during those hot Fringe nights every summer
there’s little more comforting than diving into a bowl of their signature braised duck pappardelle
Nestled in between Leederville and Mount Hawthorn, Pappagallo has become one of our favourite go-tos over the years
Whether its their crispy-based pizzas or luscious pastas
add on a burrata to your pizza… but whatever you do
Stories’ resident Italian, Alba’s crowd-pleasing pasta
piccoli piatti and principale is a little slice of sunshine in the city
sip on their selection of spritzes and dive into seafood dishes like kingfish crudo with blood orange
char-grilled squid skewers with squid ink aioli
or grilled whole tiger prawns with garlic butter
This ritzy Dalkeith eatery has more than a dash of Real Housewives of Amalfi glamour – but once you’ve settled into the luxe fit-out, you’ll find a menu of comforting classics suited to a neighbourhood spot… Albeit a rather well-heeled neighbourhood! Dive into Isoletta’s decadently melty eggplant parm
fiery chilli vongole or a delicate bowl of angel hair pasta with Shark Bay crab – or go all-out on an indulgent grilled seafood platter
emerging with aplomb from the turquoise wood-fired oven and topped with Sardinian salame
fior di latte and macadamia or ricotta and preserved lemon with prickly ash
With a flair for showing off WA’s best produce, Post’s menu delicately balances between Old-World-Italian and Perth-right-now – while reflecting the restrained refinement of the State Buildings
Stop by for mouth-watering after-work antipasti (buffalo mozzarella with grilled figs
or delve into their pasta offerings – think rigatoni with guanciale
Posto Matto may not be reinventing the wheel
Classic pasta (and pizza!) with a twist is their MO
so you can look forward to dishes like garganelli with octopus sugo
Hopefully you’ve left enough room after the stuzzichini of lamb ribs
As seductive and intriguing as an Italian film star, Shadow Wine Bar’s dimly-lit dining room is the perfect setting for your next date night
oysters with lemon myrtle or arancini with smoked leek aioli before diving into a plate of veal cotoletta with cabbage
or resisting the urge to Lady and the Tramp a bowl of prawn spaghettini
Highgate’s party paradise has well and truly matured into one of Perth’s must-visit destinations – and its menu manages to put up some pretty stiff competition with the pumping dance floor
you can still get your mitts on those Neapolitan-style pizzas
but you’ll also find it hard to resist the next-level share plates
Showing more than a nod to our enviable coast
alongside an enticing dash of Asian and Middle Eastern influence – with dishes like charcoal lamb skewers with chermoula
brown butter and horseradish cream or scallop crudo with chilli and kumquat
Is there any greater shrine to Perth’s favourite cocktail than the glowing, orange monument that is Spritz Spizzicheria
Their menu takes you from a long afternoon of cocktails and nibbles to more substantial pasta
pizza and mains – or take advantage of their aperativo time: two hours of drinking and snacking specials (Italy’s best recent export?)
We’re starting to think Mount Hawthorn is punching above its weight in culinary options
Hidden away behind Subi thoroughfare Rokeby Road, Cherubino City Cellar is proof that sometimes the harder it is the find
The extensive (of course) wine list features Italian and Australian drops
alongside a tempting menu of snackable selections (prosciutto
An impressive blend of Italian dining infused with the spirit of fresh WA produce, Lalla Rookh‘s menu is a lesson in relaxed decadence
Sommelier Jeremy Prus stocks an award-winning offering of only the finest Italian and Australian offerings

It’s fair to say we really larb these Thai restaurants around Perth
We’re sorry for the pun… Hopefully you’ll forgive us when you check out some of these delicious Thai restaurants across Perth:
We first spied this new Mount Lawley Thai spot on a foodie friend’s feed, and we were immediately intrigued. While the recommendation immediately put Kub Kao in our brain’s “cautiously optimistic” category
(We also couldn’t resist swiping the crispy pork crackling through the creamy choo chee curry sauce
It was a fortuitous few weeks that saw both Hunter Bread and Rym Tarng open in Bicton Central – followed by even more deliciousness as the hub has developed
but signature dishes like a fiery Angus beef salad or enticingly charred choo chee prawns certainly help seal the deal
Hidden away in the Central160 food court, Thai takeaway joint Soi29 (or Soi56
depending who you ask) is home to perhaps our favourite lunch in the city – and in spite of our hesitation to create even longer lines
we can’t deny the magnetic pull of not just their slow cooked beef khao soi
but their unparalleled crispy chicken and rice
Truly the salve to any bad day at the office
Market regular Bangkok Jump Street has made the leap to a brick-and-mortar location in Northbridge, and while Baan Baan means “comfort and simple”
as well as home-style meals – but it’s all perfect for sharing
Let’s hope your date is as hot as some fresh Thai chilies
As soon as the temperature starts to rise, we’ve gotta head to S&T for a papaya salad
A side of crunchy Thai pancake doesn’t hurt
This Northbridge eatery is a long-time favourite
particularly for spice fiends who are happy to turn up the heat to 11
their guay teaw num tok soup will warm even the coldest of hearts
Another Northbridge favourite, we’ll admit we spent far too long blindly walking past Torung Market before finally seeing the light
This low-key spot strikes the balance between Thai classics
regional specialties and a contemporary vibe
Who wouldn’t want to start a night out here
Perhaps there’s something to be said about a doubled-up name – the Thai so nice they had to name it twice? Louder Louder continues the theme with big-impact flavours inspired by both the street food and home cooking of Thailand’s north east Isan region
Start with those tantalisingly crispy prawn cakes before diving into a whole fried barramundi or the succulently tender Mussamun beef ribs curry – or dive into one of those comforting hot pots when the weather cools
If you’re in the inner north, you’re in luck, because it’s where you’ll find the lion’s share of Perth’s best Thai food. Sa-Lung opened back in 2018
and since then has been steadily gaining a loyal following for their signature combination of street food favourites and family recipes
While their duck noodle soup is a pretty unmissable winter warmer
they also serve a truly impressive array of vegan options
The north end of Barrack Street might not be the most illustrious part of town, but the aromatic, tender temptation of Chuonkin’s slow-cooked lamb shanks would be enough to entice anyone
vibrant curries – we know where our next lunch break will be
They might not win any awards for ambience, but Wok & Ladle is proof that looks aren’t everything
fresh flavours are the name of the game here
or the mouth-watering stir fried pork belly
pop across the road for a bottle of wine to BYO
Full Moon Thai’s intimate dining room is certainly memorable
This cosy Walcott Street restaurant is filled to the brim – and we mean floor to ceiling
And although the jewel-box interior is remarkable
you’ll leave thinking about the meal you just had
aromatic massaman beef and green curries will have you feeling like royalty yourself
Tucked away down a residential Mount Lawley street, Longlae is an unexpected treasure
More adventurous diners will be intrigued by their specials
with dishes on offer like pickled bamboo shoot curry with fish eggs
While we love things cheap and cheerful, Dusit (now in their new-ish Cottesloe digs) brings a bit more formality to this list – without the price tag
Suitable whether you’re stopping by for a quick lunch or getting the family together for dinner
the menu is packed with crowd pleasers and specialties alike
with plenty of options for vegans and vegetarians
Another inner north treasure, Khanom Thai makes a big impact despite its low-key appearance
particularly when it comes to showstopper dishes like the whole fried snapper
is Thai for the desserts which these guys specialise in – with service just as sweet
A visit to Long Chim will always turn up the heat
The Thai street food mecca has become an institution of sorts since opening its doors in 2015 – and for good reason
Bringing a slice of Bangkok to the State Buildings’ basement
the menu practically slaps you in the face with flavour
Suburban takeaways get a bad rap, but Scents of Siam is proof that your local can hold its own against the big hitters
you’ll be able to score a jar of their tamarind dipping sauce or chilli jam to take home
Tucked away in Cockburn, you’ll find hidden gem Noot’s
we’re not doing our best Pingu impression – but we’d certainly like to toot a horn or two for Noot’s
We’re pretty jealous it’s not at the end of our street
Opening at the start of 2021, Ma Kin has become a fast favourite for Nedlands locals
serving up street-food inspired Northern Thai fare
but the entire menu is so tantalising you’ll be wanting to try one of everything

As the clouds subside and sunlight begins flooding the Mount Lawley coffee shop that bears his name
Tim Willing comes bounding through the side door and darts between his staff
I’ve become accustomed to conducting these interviews over lunch
but was warned I would have to make an exception if I wanted to meet with Willing
Willing Property founder Tim Willing at his coffee shop in Mt Lawley.Credit: Ross Swanborough
The Perth property developer has been up since 4.45am
to squeeze in at least two hours of cycling and running before sitting down at his desk at 10am
“People ask how I make time [for exercise]
it’s where the thoughts come more easily,” he tells me
confirming the morning drizzle hadn’t deterred him
As the son of a professional athlete deeply fixated on health and diet
and a former Australian track cycling champion himself
Willing says it was an ethos formed in childhood which has taught him the value of goal setting and discipline
But he insists that is not to say he doesn’t support indulgence in moderation
while insisting I try the avocado on toast
the lively inner-northern suburb lined with Federation and Colonial style homes he now draws inspiration from and builds apartments alongside
He began following his carpenter father to construction sites from the age of 4
which he believes laid the foundations for his career in all facets of property
so I grew up on building sites,” he recalls
as my cappuccino and his black coffee arrive
“I think our industry is characterised often by multiple generations fulfilling the previous generations’ aspirations

and he was a rare type in that he never worked for anyone other than himself and would do everything — from putting up for sale signs and running the design process to cleaning the slab.”
While he admired his father’s entrepreneurship
and dreams of becoming a professional track cycling champion had landed him a scholarship with the WA Institute of Sport
the Guildford Grammar graduate decided to follow his grandfather into the world of real estate
Willing completed a real estate course at Midland TAFE in the early 1990s
Willing had been selling homes for a number of years when a friend working in Jakarta encouraged him to turn his attention abroad to international real estate opportunities in Indonesia and Singapore
an ambitious young Willing boarded a plane and headed straight for global real estate giant Jones Lang LaSalle’s office in Jakarta
got a contact and contacted them furiously until they would see me
Willing worked between Jakarta and Singapore as the company’s international sales manager in an industry overflowing with US dollars until 1998
when a financial crisis wreaked havoc on economies throughout East and South-East Asia
He relocated to Sydney to lead the project marketing division of investment management group Colliers during the city’s major apartment boom
where he remained for two years until returning to Perth with his tail between his legs at the turn of the millennium
Willing is interested in the chance encounters in life
and says you won’t meet anyone interesting sitting at home.Credit: Ross Swanborough
Willing ran one of Perth’s first project marketing companies —promoting the ‘Box Building’ on Hay Street and negotiating the purchase of land for the Miami development by self-proclaimed ‘King of Sex’ Malcolm Day
But his career trajectory was altered in 2002
and he boarded a plane east only to find out he would be sitting opposite Multiplex heir Tim Roberts
Willing and Roberts — who had been relegated to business class on a commercial flight after his private plane broke down — talked for the duration of the flight before exchanging details
Roberts came knocking with a job offering leading Multiplex’s apartment development arm
I would always fly business class because I’m not going to meet anyone back in economy that could help me in life
The decade Willing spent with the company took him across the world
from Monaco and Spain to projects in Multiplex’s home state of WA
including the Old Swan Brewery and Claremont Quarter
Willing concedes the plane encounter and the career adventure it sparked was
But he also suspects he owes part of it to his interest in chance encounters and his propensity to place himself in situations that greatly increase the likelihood of them occurring
I would always fly business class because I’m not going to meet anyone back in economy that could help me in life,” he tells me
“I’m very interested in the chance encounters in life
and I’ll often do things that I don’t necessarily need to
like going to the State Buildings even when I don’t have an appointment in the city
but it sure as hell won’t happen at home.”
He left the global construction giant as the company went public to found Willing Property in 2012 after convincing late healthcare billionaire and philanthropist Paul Ramsay to back him
Willing has made a name for himself by seeking out projects in more historic neighbourhoods and aiming to build apartment developments that sit comfortably alongside the single-storey homes built decades earlier

having bought craftsmen out of retirement to teach the arches and basketweave brickwork typical of the 1950s
The ceilings of his high-end developments are always at least 2.7 metres
cornice work and 18 millimetre timber floors
He draws inspiration from grand apartments he has seen in European cities
and throws hospitality into the mix to encourage community connection
He also admires the work of industry heavyweights like Adrian Fini
best known for his revamp of the State Buildings
someone Willing believes should receive a knighthood for what he has done for Perth
“I’m only interested in building beautiful buildings
“I probably should be more financially motivated
but at the same time I want beautiful outcomes that are still going to be here for 100 years or more
“I’m interested in developing in places that have a natural energy
and coffee shops are like the new religious institutions; they’re part of a ritual in a daily life
and something that we all need is that interaction with people.”
The high-end developments of his company — which spans property
construction and hospitality — lend themselves to Perth’s generation of wealthy downsizers
many of whom are travelling more but that he says still want “space” and “grandeur”
Despite only pursuing mid-rise apartment builds
Willing is no stranger to the community resistance to density troubling developers
While acknowledging how difficult it is to navigate
Willing believes WA has one of the best planning regimes in the country
“I wouldn’t even go and talk to council myself
unless I had a professional planner and a professional planning lawyer — even the most esteemed legal minds have difficulties understanding and interpreting [local planning policies],” he says
“By the time it goes out for public consultation
the community sees it and assumes developers get everything they want
“I understand the frustration of homeowners because the local law is so prescriptive
and [property developers] can do all these things that they couldn’t
but what the public doesn’t realise is that by the time a developer gets an approval
often a lot of work and millions of dollars invested.”
The developer says people get very fixated on height in Perth for some reason
but he’s not building 12 and 20 and 40 level apartment buildings
He is a fan of the Development Assessment Panel process
which allows developments to be assessed by planning professionals and uninfluenced by local politics
and there has been a steady stream of pedestrian foot traffic heading in and out of the café on this Friday morning
But Willing says we’re sitting in a development that was the subject of a 400-page report from the local council outlining the reasons it should never be built
only for it to receive praise from government ministers and be frequented by those who initially opposed it once it was completed
He was dragged to the WA Supreme Court by a neighbour over another development
and stared down strong opposition on his Coolbinia apartment complex — even fielding letters to his home claiming he would be responsible for increasing the death toll on an already congested road
Perth is a first generation of apartment buyers
but he doesn’t understand how the 2 million people living in the world’s longest city could believe continuing the sprawl would be a better alternative
“People get very fixated on height here for some reason
and I’m not building 12 and 20 and 40 level apartment buildings with 200 people; we’re talking four
five to eight levels with 35 apartments,” he says
but they’re not motoring out the freeway and being alarmed necessarily by the godforsaken places we’re creating with no soul
that their only cultural icon is a local Coles
“The national affordability debate is almost predicated on people’s God given right to build a four bed
This would be unusual for almost any other part of the world
“We can’t just continue using the land because it’s there
and I think there are better ways to interact in diverse communities
and apartment development is sustainable.”
As we push away our coffee cups and prepare to leave
I ask Willing what he would like his legacy to be
He tells me his 16-year-old daughter has informed him of her intention to take the reins of the family business soon
but jokes that he may retain a spot on the payroll as a barista
“I want to make the best places to live we possibly can and create meeting places
I want people to see a building in 50 years time and know it was a Willing building,” he says
“I’ve never feared saying that I do try hard
“My advice would be to just try because you’ll be surprised what’s possible.”

Here, in the pared-back, minimalistic space, you’ll find coffee, cacao, chai, matcha, and herbal teas alongside wholesome smoothies, gourmet toast, and an array of delicious, hand-made cabinet food. It’s all part of a mission to champion nourishing food that doesn’t compromise on taste.
“The inspiration behind Bridges’ is an extension of my skin and wellness clinic. We wanted somewhere that offered good quality organic and locally sourced food (where possible) that tasted delicious but also nourished the body,” Henderson said.
“The venue is aesthetically pleasing with earthy, neutral tones. It’s a slice of Byron Bay with a hidden courtyard which is great for kids and pooches,” she said.
According to Naomi, the name is a tribute to Stanbridges Hobby Shop — what was once an iconic Perth institution for more than 70 years.
“Although we are completely different industries, he brought a smile to so many faces and we hope to do the same. Oh, and there’s also a bridge across the road as well.”
Bridges’ Wellness Café is open Monday to Friday from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, and Saturday from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.

AUSTRALIA — A groundbreaking ceremony for West Residences
a new luxury apartment development in Mount Lawley to the east of Perth in Western Australia
was held recently with Minister for Housing
and Willing Property Founder Tim Willing in attendance
The event marked the commencement of construction for this highly anticipated project
designed in collaboration with renowned architects Klopper & Davis and landscape architects CAPA
will feature 29 grandly proportioned apartments on a unique triangular site
The development aims to complement Mount Lawley’s character while offering modern amenities
Director of Klopper & Davis Architects
emphasised the project’s distinctiveness: “Like New York’s Flatiron building
the site of West forms the junction between the orderly and the sublime
“The avenues of Mount Lawley are crossed by West Parade
creating an opportunity to celebrate this contrast with a beautiful
whose family has resided in Mount Lawley for three generations
expressed his deep connection to the area and vision for the project
“West Residences represents Willing’s commitment to quality and design
We’ve paid special attention to every detail
ensuring each residence offers a unique living experience with all the modern conveniences,” he stated
The development adheres to 7-Star Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) performance criteria and aims to achieve carbon neutrality
Features include a grid-connected solar PV system to power common amenities and EV charging stations
West Residences will also house a Willing Coffee shop on the ground floor
designed to integrate with the streetscape and provide a gathering space for residents and locals alike
Willing Build will oversee the construction
employing an integrated development model to ensure high standards throughout the process
The project is slated for completion in 2026
with apartments currently available for purchase
This development represents a significant addition to Mount Lawley’s housing landscape
aligning with the government’s efforts to boost housing supply and quality in Western Australia

More of them prefer to live in Scarborough than any other suburb in WA
according to new census data revealing where certain professions call home
Baldivis is home to the most sales assistants (832 of them)
police officers (159) and hairdressers (115)
Scarborough is a tranquil haven for FIFO worker and geologist Bruno Pereira

This in-depth look into occupational statistics has been made available for the first time thanks to a change in the way census information is recorded
For Brazilian immigrants Bruno Pereira and Graciany da Silva
finding out they are two of 98 geologists living in Scarborough was no surprise
flocking to the suburb for its colourful beachside festivals and community
“We lived there for a while and then we moved to Northbridge and then to Victoria Park but decided that we needed to come back to Scarborough to get closer to the sea
“We have a lot of friends from Brazil who live here
said the suburb offered a certain peace and tranquillity for those with busy professional lives

What is the most common suburb of residence for your job
type it into the box below and follow the prompt to our visual story
It starts out by taking you through the typical earnings for your occupation
before showing you how many people do the same job as you in your suburb
as well as the suburb that comes out on the top of the list for your profession
Some job clusters appear obvious for proximity reasons – most horse trainers and jockeys live in Ascot
winemakers in Margaret River and miners in Newman – while others can be explained by socioeconomic status
such as anaesthetists in Nedlands and plastic surgeons in Cottesloe
But University of Western Australia social demographer Amanda Davies said not all clusters were obvious
“Something in the data that’s very much a Perth-y-type thing is that
it is somewhat important ‘who you know’ when you’re seeking work in certain occupations,” she said
“Friends and family hook people up into different types of occupations and so you see other clusters that can be perhaps explained by those social networks or family networks
where people move into a particular occupation because their family happens to own business in that area
“The ‘Perth network’ is still very important.”
Perth was very much rooted in its community-driven identity
with people tending to stay in their homes through career changes
aided by the expansion of Perth’s rail system into the outer suburbs allowing people to work further from where they live
“We very much are a population of people who stay in our homes for a long period of time,” Davies said
It is actually something that’s very significant to the way we operate in Perth.”

Commander Mike Bell of WA Police’s Road Policing Command has urged caution on the state’s roads following several crashes this weekend
including the deaths of two women in Neergabby
Other crashes have included the deaths of three men in Carlisle on Saturday morning, an elderly woman dying in hospital after a crash at Alexander Heights on Saturday and a car crashing into a Nando’s restaurant at Mount Lawley – which fortunately didn’t involve any deaths or major injuries
The Neergabby crash occurred on Indian Ocean Drive about 5pm Saturday
involving two Indonesian women in a white Honda Accord and a silver Jeep Cherokee containing at least three people

The 23-year-old female driver and 31-year-old female passenger of the Accord died at the scene
The tragedy will now bring the 2024 state road toll to 146 deaths
“Here we are back again after my plea yesterday for drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions,” Bell said
we had a car-versus-car head-on [collision] on Indian Ocean Drive ..

“Mr Campo was very distressed because the events of yesterday morning with the multiple fatal crash with the young men [in Carlisle] retraumatised him
“And he’s just exasperated that his message of youth slowing down and driving to the conditions ..
“And I can just understand his frustration because I’ve been doing it a lot longer than 14 weeks and I’m feeling the same way.”

I am still trying to process what I saw on Friday night at my 15-year-old daughter's football game.
I've seen bad behaviour on the sporting sidelines, many times, but what happened at the end of this game between Inglewood — Mt Lawley Roos and High Wycombe was the most disgraceful and frightening thing I have ever seen in junior sport.
Spectators from High Wycombe punched and kicked Mt Lawley coaches and officials.
It was horrific to watch, and the more people tried to stop it, the worse things got.
I was one of several parents who called the police.
I appreciate there are two sides to every story.
I also appreciate that a red card that saw a High Wycombe player sent off may well have set the tone.
But for spectators to express their concerns through violence and attacking others is not OK.
I spoke to parents Jason and Dan about what happened and then the Sport and Recreation Minister called in.
Police are investigating after a number of people were injured in a brawl involving spectators at a junior football game in Perth over the weekend.(ABC News)

Mount Lawley secured the division one Golf WA Women’s Pennant flag for the third consecutive year after dominating Lake Karrinyup in the final.
The Vines Golf & Country Club hosted the showdown, which, on paper could have been a close encounter. Mount Lawley had won all seven of their matches on their procession to the final, while Lake Karrinyup’s only defeat came at the hands of Mount Lawley in an exciting 4.5 – 2.5 match in the second round of matches in early May.
Come the final however, Mount Lawley was bolstered by the presence of Erina Tan, Amanda Gan, Isabella Leniartek and Ruby Cotton – all of whom had missed the earlier clash between the sides while representing WA in the interstate teams matches.
Mount Lawley made most of the early running, with Cotton, Gan, Maddison Ling, Georgia Sanderson and Sophie Williams all up early in their matches. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though, with Lake Karrinyup’s Hannah Mitchell and Isobel Dorrington up on Tan and Leniartek at the halfway point in the top two matches.
That was as good as it got for Lake Karrinyup, however. Williams – unbeaten throughout the pennants season – posted an 8&7 win over Tracey Silbert, with Ling, Sanderson, Cotton and Gan all adding comfortable wins to guarantee Mount Lawley the flag.
Tan and Leniartek, meanwhile, overturned their deficits to win 3&1 and 2&1 respectively to give Mount Lawley a 7-0 clean sweep.
Not only was it Mount Lawley’s third division one title on the bounce it was also their sixth win in the last seven women’s pennants seasons, with Royal Perth in 2021 the only other team to win the top flight since 2016.

There’s something about corner-shop homes that instantly give off a unique vibe
they’ve evolved from mere corner stores into architectural wonders
just like this home extension designed by architects Simone Robeson and Lauren Benson of Robeson Architects
The heritage-listed former corner store retains the character home at the front and now flaunts a new modern renovation at the back
the new building addition is cleverly tucked away
intentionally maintaining a modest and discrete presence
Making the most out of every bit of space available
the new ground floor living area focuses on practicality and storage
while taking advantage of the sunlight and leafy tree views to the north
The extension centres around a magnificent old tree
adding a whole new living space without expanding the house’s footprint
The ground floor is the heart of modern living
This new living wing features Jarrah timber battens that line the eaves
a nod to the existing jarrah floorboards in the original house
Black metal cladding allows the second level to blend into the background and not compete with the existing heritage facade
complete with a spacious ensuite and walk-in robe
The primary bedroom boasts huge north-facing windows that overlook the tree
Who wouldn’t love waking up to such a view
designed to preserve the intricate pressed-tin ceiling of the bedroom below
offers the best views of the house – glimpses of the city views over the historic chimney of the original shop front
Clever design has resulted in the new upper floor roof going undetected
and seamlessly blending with the existing roof
This was achieved by designing the new roof at the same angle as the existing one
Privacy from surrounding houses is ensured by carefully positioned vertical fins
which still allow an abundance of natural light to flood the bedroom
the original kitchen was replaced with a new bathroom and toilet
while under the new staircase is a laundry
designed around the owners’ art collection with meticulous attention to detail
The rangehood cladding was deliberately matched to the walls
providing a seamless backdrop for the owners’ colourful pieces
Each wall was carefully sized to accommodate specific artworks
ensuring every cherished piece could be displayed and appreciated
Smart design was key to the functionality of the kitchen
The kitchen island bench pulls double duty
serving as both a prep area and a dining table
This clever design maximises space in the lounge room
giving the owners flexibility to either add more furniture over time or rearrange the space
