It would be fair to say that the Resilient Lands Program (RLP) has not been moving ahead at a pace that would pass the Lismore pub test land has been purchased or is in the stages of negotiation workers and graders on site creating the necessary infrastructure work so housing construction can begin are a non-event Mount Pleasant Estate in Goonellabah is one parcel of land that the NSW Reconstruction Authority (NSWRA) purchased after the infrastructure work was completed by a developer such as single detached homes on 400 m2 lots houses on community title with shared green spaces and renovated relocated homes from the Lismore floodplain There was a hive of activity late last year when four flood-affected homes were relocated and ready for renovation the renovations were to be completed by the end of 2025 with the first residents moving in soon after there has been no activity at Mount Pleasant Estate The Lismore App went looking for answers and found them in the form of Graham Kennett the Executive Director Reconstruction for the NSWRA Graham said the first contract was to relocate the houses and the scope of work was limited within that contract Then we'll have a separate contract for the renovations to prepare them for the market but there's been some property assessment work that had to be done so go back and reinspect all the remaining elements and then scope out the renovation works and the architectural and structural design that goes with that We're looking to go to the market for either a design and construct or we may get an architect to finish the detailed design work but we haven't quite made the decision on that we should be ready next month for the renovation works to go to market."  Graham did confirm that 2025 is still the target date for the renovations to be completed As for the anticipated price range for flood-affected people to potentially purchase a relocated home We should get an indication when the detailed scope of work is complete and the architectural plans have been drawn up in detail the four relocated homes are only the first stage of the Mount Pleasant Estate development What is the expected completion date for the rest of the estate "It's projected for completion by late 2026," Graham said "We had to get through that master planning process first there was a draft master plan out with all those different housing types and all that information has now been presented so what we need to do is ascertain the level of interest and commitment that the RHP (Reslient Homes Program) buyback participants are prepared to make towards Mount Pleasant they got an understanding from all the RHP participants how many might be interested in Mount Pleasant and they're just going back and double-checking with the remaining participants to make sure no one gets left out The next step is to have a deeper consultation with those interested parties so the RA can develop more detailed floor plans to present given the type of housing people want to purchase will include an indication of the cost for the build and the land on each type of housing "What we didn't want to do was just crack on with the master plan based on We wanted to make sure that if we're going to be doing additional subdivision works to change the layout that already exists and particularly before we start construction of any dwellings that we want to make sure there's a commitment and we are actually addressing the needs of the RHP participants there would be enough participants from the first expression of interest to sell out the entire estate there may be more changes to the draft master plan the draft master plan is out there as a draft based on the feedback we've had to date but most definitely the intent is that the master plan will be revised based on that level of commitment We may get higher numbers of interest in that type of development or lower so we've just got to undertake that engagement with them so that we're making sure what we're delivering is meeting those RHP participants' needs."  There is a lot more community engagement to come between the RA and RHP participants in the coming months before we get answers on the exact makeup of housing at Mount Pleasant Estate we know the relocation houses are still on track to be completed by the end of 2025 and the rest of the estate by the end of 2026 MOUNT Pleasant kicked off the ’25 senior footy season by scoring a 114-point victory against Heathcote in Saturday’s first round of the Bendigo Bank Heathcote DFNL action. The Blues and Saints played at Colbinabbin’s M.J. Morgan Oval because of the hard surface at Mount Pleasant’s base in Toolleen. Heathcote scored the first two goals of the contest, but from there it was a blue and white wave. The Blues scored 26 goals as Heathcote added just another six. By the final siren Mount Pleasant led 169-55. There was plenty of emotion on and off-field just two days after the passing of Blues’ committee member and triple premiership player Adam Tuohey. There was more than just the four premiership points at stake as the Cliff and Peter White Memorial Shield was up for grabs. It’s a new-look coaching set-up for the Blues as Cam Carter is director of coaching, Josh Hann and Adam Baird are playing coaches. Mounts led 50-18 at quarter-time and 84-35 by the long break. The pressure and run did not let up as the Blues scored 7.3 and kept the Saints to a tally of two behinds in the third term. Gun on-baller Jack Hickman, ruckman Chris Down, key defender William Wallace, Tyler McNamara and Reardon McIvor were best. In attack it was the strong-marking Brodie Leonard-Shannon, six goals, and Mitch Bennett, four goals, who capitalised on their team’s dominance. Aaron Gundry, Jackson Jones and Zak Saad kicked two goals each for the Saints. Heathcote’s best were Codie Price, Aaron Gundry, Will Tobin, Oscar Keogh, Liam Jacques and Jackson Jones. The Saints have Andrew Saladino, non-playing, and Liam Jacques, playing, as co-coaches. North Bendigo almost rued goalkicking inaccuracy as it fought on for an eight-point win against Elmore. The Bulldogs doubled Elmore’s scoring shots in a 10.26 (86) to 12.6 (78) victory at Bendigo Club Oval in North Bendigo’s Atkins Street. The Nathan Kay-coached Elmore was on the verge of a huge upset in the final term, but it was the Bulldogs who clawed their way to the front. Elmore won the first quarter, 26-25, before North Bendigo hit back to win the second term, 29-19. A tally of 1.9 in the third term as the Bloods added 1.3 meant the Dogs led 69-54 going into the last. Elmore scored four straight goals, but North’s score of 2.5 was enough to clinch victory. Co-coach Ryan Hartley, Dylan Klemm and Cody Riddick kicked two goals each for the red, white and blue. Elmore’s attack was led by James Harney on five goals as Liam Bianco chipped in with two. Best for a Bulldogs line-up which has the experienced Rob Bennett as non-playing co-coach were Jordan Hargreaves, Lachlan Ross, Harrison Jarvie, Liam Dillon, Jesse Clark and Nic Waterson. Elmore’s best were former Brisbane Lion Phil Smith, Jake Dick-O’Flaherty, Rhys Holmberg, Nathan Kay, Liam Bianco and Jarrad Kyne. Leitchville Gunbower won Saturday’s rematch of the ’24 grand final against Winslow White Hills Demons by 38 points. The Bombers and Demons played in the den at Winslow Constructors Oval in Scott Street. A big day and night for White Hills included the unfurling of the ’24 senior, reserves and under-18s premiership flags. In the senior footy, Leitchville Gunbower won an evenly fought first half, 32-29. The Shannon Keam-coached Bombers slammed on eight goals in the third as the Demons added 3.3. Led by the play of Chris Horman, Will Brereton and Josh Hawken, Leitchville Gunbower kicked on for a 96-58 result. Billy Hawken led LG’s attack on five goals. Demons’ captain Cohen Kekich kicked four majors. Leitchville Gunbower’s best included Bryce Barnstable, Kyle Green and Jye Keath. Best for White Hills were Jake Thompson, Ben Irvine, Jack Lawton, Nic Santas, Callum Stewart and Cohen Kekich. The Demons are being coached by Ben Taylor, playing, and Brad McConnell, non-playing. Lights shone brightly at Lockington as the first match for premiership points featured the LBU Cats against the Harlowe Huntly Hawks. sides finished outside the finals last season The win will serve as an affirmation that the Hawks can play finals netball this time around while the Cats will look to find form when it takes on a tough Mount Pleasant outfit in its second home game of the season thus far The Bloods sneaked away with a win over the Bulldogs despite strong resistance from North Bendigo throughout the contest Elmore claimed a five-goal win over last season’s wooden spooners who were hungry to start 2025 in better shape Last season’s A-grade premier showed it is every bit the threat to repeat its 2024 grand final glory The Bloods will play their first home game in round two when it faces White Hills on Saturday Mount Pleasant also got an early victory under its belt except in much more exuberant fashion berating the Saints at Colbinabbin Recreation Reserve The Mighty Mounts stormed through the contest to claim a 37-goal victory with Heathcote unable to provide any answers Mount Pleasant is looking to climb the HDNL ranks this season and is off to a flying start The final score was Mount Pleasant 61 to Heathcote 24 Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Rebecca Imholz recently offered Rotarians the scoop on her group's strategies to help boost the local economy Concerns of increased traffic and sustainable business practices were brought up in the April 23 Mount Pleasant Rotary Club meeting with featured speaker Rebecca Imholz Executive Director of Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce (MPCC) Imholz’s visit with the Rotary Club was generally about introducing the Rotarians to her organization and the various ways the chamber tries to build up local businesses The chamber’s main goal — “We are trying to get people who live here to work here,” Imholz said With well-established programs in partnership with the Town of Mount Pleasant and local business owners to incentivize residents to participate in the local economy the chamber’s current goal is to help local businesses now to hire locally as well When asked by a Rotarian about ways the chamber can help alleviate the traffic in town “We feel that one way we can help address [traffic concerns] is to let businesses especially if they are moving from outside the area know the staffing resources that are right here — the people that are available that they can hire.” The chamber added a job fair to their 15th annual Expo to help connect Mount Pleasant business with Mount Pleasant labor “[The job fair is] a grassroots way to address this issue because it is not an easy fix,” she said Rotary members asked Imholz about what the chamber is doing to educate businesses on green business practices to which she answered that the organization has not formally addressed issues of conservation and the environment but continuously makes chamber members “aware of what’s going on,” she stated Imholz also shared with the Club their annual Biz Where You Live Campaign which is a social media engagement and contest to incentivize residents to spend their money locally and share their experiences online I was talking to my business members — ‘what do you need from us?’” Imholz said “‘We need people to come back and shop again in our stores.’ So we have this free campaign.” beginning around the winter holidays for Shop Where You Live getting people to buy gifts from local vendors And later in the new year with Dine Where You Live which gets people to dine at local restaurants during a traditionally slow hospitality season and concluding with Get Fit Where You Live encouraging people to exercise at local businesses The effort concludes with the Cooper River Bridge Run Another chamber update Imholz shared with the club was very personal to her Now that the MPCC is operating out of a brick and mortar as of August 2024 they are able to have dedicated meetings for Veterans and Veteran-owned business owners they call Veteran Business Community Connect Six Rotarians raised their hands when asked how many Veterans there were in the room “That is a dear cause of mine — my father served in Vietnam,” she said “My family going back to World War II has always served in the military our Veteran-owned businesses is really important.” The Mount Pleasant Rotary Club meets every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m #RotaryClubofMountPleasant #MountPleasantRotary #RebeccaImholz parklet will be a part of their larger Mount Pleasant Way project but the significance of this is to highlight what Scanlonville represents and when Mount Pleasant Way can connect us to our history and to our culture it’s so much more than recreation,” Haynie says The Scanlonville Settlement Community dates back to the 1860s when freedman John Scanlon purchased 614 acres of what was previously Remley’s Plantation at an auction for $6,100 he founded the Charleston Land Company to provide land ownership opportunities to freed slaves One hundred African American men each paid $10 a share to purchase large pieces of land They divided the Scanlonville property into a planned community with lots freed slaves who were interested in owning land could buy these lots “What’s important was the men that bought it they were included in the senses of human beings,” President of the East Cooper Civic Club Edward Lee says The town has been working with the East Cooper Civic Club to help bring this vision to life many descendants of the freed slaves still live in this area “I want history to be more than just a series of dates and events so until you know the feeling and the perspective of the people that actually lived there you don’t really get a true sense of what happened,” Lee says Plans feature signage and symbols spread out across the site telling the story of the Scanlonville Well, it certainly has gotten off to a good start, claiming a tight but thrilling win over Huntly at home in round one. The Cats got off to a rocking start, kicking a trio of maximums to open their season account while holding Huntly to 2.3, taking a seven-point quarter-time lead. The Hawks had opportunities to grab the game by the neck as LBU began to falter in the second term, adding just nine points to its first quarter total. White Hills co-coach Cameron Carter.Do you feel the defence was one of your deficiencies last season but probably only had Michael Whiting in terms of size whereas we think now we've got some key defenders and really good ball users through there "We think Luke (Marchesi) will also play down back as well.. we will have some really good leadership down there "Defence is probably that first pillar that you really want to be able to get right and we think we've done that." What seems very noticeable with your recruits is an enormous amount of experience "When we sat down at the end of last year that was an area we felt we needed to tick "We were very young and our experience probably wasn't always around last year with a couple of the boys coming out of Queensland and we just needed that leadership and voice and people to take charge out on the ground Having Squidgy come in as a playing coach as well is really crucial." How is the list health-wise with round one just around the corner now With Skinny we will just have to build up some fitness with him given he hasn't done a big pre-season "Apart from that we're in pretty good nick we've had healthy numbers and will be hopeful we can field close to a full-strength side in round one." This certainly looks like a deep list with a lot of talent on it How high are your expectations for this season "For a start we'd just like to get some early wins "You've got to be aiming to be in the top three if you're going to be somewhere around the mark at the end of the year A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible becoming NNW and decreasing to less than 5 mph. becoming NNW and decreasing to less than 5 mph People jog up and down the sidewalk along Rifle Range Road on Wednesday Errol Moore stands in from of his home along Mathis Ferry Road where a segment of Mount Pleasant Way is imminent Concerns of creeping development in historic Black communities weren't enough to stop Charleston County from awarding Mount Pleasant $1 million in greenbelt funds for a multiuse path on Rifle Range Road MOUNT PLEASANT — Charleston County narrowly approved roughly $1 million of greenbelt funds for a two-mile segment of a town-wide network of paths and trails The project faced pushback from a faction of councilmembers and residents at the April 29 meeting who are concerned with the impact the trails could have on the Four Mile Community, a historic Black settlement community along Rifle Range Road Mount Pleasant applied for $1,073,100 in Greenbelt funds a pot of money raised through transportation sales taxes used to acquire greenspace for conservation and historic and cultural preservation The roughly two-mile trail will be a 10 to 12-foot-wide concrete path along Rifle Range Road running from Ben Sawyer Boulevard to Venning Road The funds will be used to purchase recreational easements outside of the public right of way from willing sellers But the request produced some friction among council members who reviewed the application at both a special finance committee meeting and county council meeting on April 29 Councilman Teddie Pryor disagreed with the use of greenbelt monies to purchase easements noting he felt it goes against the spirit of the program "I don't think we ought to be using greenbelt funds for easement purposes I thought it was to preserve land," Pryor said When completed, Mount Pleasant Way will consist of 47 miles of wide meant for pedestrians and cyclists to access popular commercial and residential areas of Mount Pleasant The path will be built around areas with large the town's transportation deputy director said the project faced pushback from residents of the various settlement communities that are in Mount Pleasant though they are largely situated in unincorporated Charleston County and the taxpayers voted to preserve property not to spend money to come into people's neighborhood and destroy green space and trees," George Freeman Councilman Henry Darby also opposed approving the greenbelt funds for the trail likening it to "pouring water on a drowning man." "No other communities have suffered as much as settlement communities," Darby said Darby and Pryor, alongside Council Chair Kylon Jerome Middleton and Councilman C voted against Mount Pleasant's application The final 5-4 vote was enough to approve the $1,073,100 for Mount Pleasant Way "I think it would be a positive change for the congestion we have (in) East Cooper and the traffic and the safety I traverse that road probably several times a week and I think this would make it a safer environment for more people or most people," Councilman Larry Kobrovsky said Mount Pleasant has received over $4 million in county greenbelt funds for 10 segments of the mobility project since 2019 Eleven miles of Mount Pleasant Way have been completed Design and construction is underway for another 25 miles of paths and trails The path is touted as an alternative solution to the increasing amount of heavy traffic the town faces. It has gained support from mobility advocates like Charleston Moves, and helped the town secure a $16 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant in 2023 for infrastructure improvements Company evaluating "changes in technology" Microsoft has paused construction on parts of its $3.3 billion data center campus in Mount Pleasant The company has permission to develop up to 1,000 acres of land in the village but said that while it is pressing ahead with the first phase of the plan In a statement to Wisconsin Public Radio Microsoft said: “We have paused early construction work for this second phase while we evaluate scope and recent changes in technology and consider how this might impact the design of our facilities."
