A new space with youth in mind has been completed at Beverley Job Park in Narraweena this week
The park is already a hub of activity with an off-leash dog park
so the addition of a multi-use youth space is set to be well utilised by the community
Council consulted with over 400 local youths about the facilities at this location and feedback received indicated a strong desire for a basketball court to be installed
Broader engagement with the community also supported this option
The new site has linking pathways through the reserve
extra hard surface around the court for handball and new bench seats
Twelve months later this vision has become reality thanks to Council and a $121,000 grant from the NSW Government Crown Reserves Improvement Fund plus a $70,000 grant from the NSW Government Local Small Commitments Allocation – Playground and Parks Program and the remaining $199,000 contributed by Council
Construction took 5 months and this week it was officially opened by the Mayor Sue Heins and Member for Warringah Michael Regan

Like many before them, they settled on the northern beaches, in the pint-sized suburb of Narraweena
Narraweena still bears the hallmarks of that thriving Italian community
“We’ve got a lot of cafes, a continental deli, three pizza shops and a really healthy European cuisine,” says Esposito, principal at McGrath Dee Why
“It’s a very small version of Haberfield – the Haberfield of the northern beaches
The rest are split between attached properties and apartments
The hilly terrain provides many homes on the eastern side with impressive views over Dee Why to Longreef
there was a stigma attached to the neighbourhood because of its high proportion of public housing
There was a huge amount of government housing post-war,” says Esposito
“It’s certainly shaken that stigma and is blossoming into a well-regarded suburb.”
with young families snapping up homes on generous blocks for less than they would pay in better-known neighbouring suburbs
A wave of renovations and rebuilds has coincided with the influx of younger owners
The suburb is about 18 kilometres north of the CBD
2.5 kilometres north of Warringah Mall and about three kilometres from Dee Why beach
it takes about 40 minutes to reach the central business district
It’s a five-minute drive to the new Northern Beaches Hospital in Frenchs Forest
The house price median is just shy of $1.4 million
which Esposito says would buy a three-bedroom home on a 600-square-metre parcel
A new suburb record was set late last year when a five-bedroom home on nearly 1400 square metres changed hands for $2.3 million
near the main Alfred Street shopping strip
has been in Matt Demasi’s family for nearly 20 years
Rose’s will close for about 12 months while the building is redeveloped into a mixed-use block with apartments above commercial spaces
says the neighbourhood has changed dramatically as older owners have moved on
Ocean views from the first-floor living room are among the highlights of this rustic-chic home

The Gilfillan family is selling their four-bedroom townhouse in Narraweena
House prices in a small northern beaches suburb are forecast to jump almost 30 per cent in three years according to new nationwide data — more than any other suburb in Sydney
Narraweena is predicted to see its median house price jump more than $386,000 to $1,685,387
the second highest future capital growth in the country according to the Select Residential Property Research Group
The research group looked at 17 market variables and crunched the numbers looking for suburbs with the highest forecast growth
Parts of Narraweena have lovely views and the suburb has numerous parks
Balaclava in inner Melbourne took out the top spot but Narraweena came in at second place with predicted growth of 29.7 per cent over three years
Research director of the Select Residential Property Research Group
Jeremy Sheppard said the research identified the suburbs with sound market fundamentals
“There is a lot of heat in the suburbs just back from the coast,” he said
And he added that Narraweena’s neighbouring suburbs had seen strong growth indicating that Narraweena was about to catch up
According to CoreLogic the median house price in Narraweena is coming off a low base having dropped 12.4 per cent over 12 months to July this year
said Narraweena is coming out of the rebound phase well
still close to Manly and beaches and riding the wave of the Brookvale masterplan and high growth potential of Frenchs Forest,” he said
many of the former social housing properties have been sold into private hands and the suburb is shaking off its perceived stigma of being post-war weatherboard and fibro territory
“There are some pockets where you can get gorgeous views and there are a lot of properties that haven’t traded yet that would break the suburb record,” Mr Lutze added
Residents Matthew and Rebecca Gilfillan think that Narraweena has been undervalued compared to the rest of the northern beaches and they have discovered that their suburb is quiet and family-friendly
Mathew and Rebecca Gilfillan in their low-maintenance backyard with their two sons
the hospital and the proposed new tunnel,” Mr Giffillan said
“It is very easy to get to the city for a work commute and only a five-minute drive to beautiful beaches and parks,” he added
The couple have enjoyed Narraweena and are only selling to move closer to family
They are auctioning their four-bedroom townhouse at 2/58b Consul Rd North in November
The two-level home is in a cul-de-sac and has a low-maintenance backyard
“We love the amount of space and the versatility of the home as there is plenty of room to entertain
our children to play and for me to work from home,” Rebecca Gilfillan said
The townhouse has a guide of $1.1 million and is scheduled to be auctioned on Saturday November 9
as it is child friendly it would suit a young growing family
a family with teenagers who would enjoy the retreat area of the downstairs level or a family where in-laws would like to live or stay on a regular basis
They are auctioning their four-bedroom townhouse next month

A man has been taken to hospital after a bus crash at Narraweena
Shortly before 5.30pm this evening (Monday
NSW Ambulance and rescue firefighters from Narrabeen Station responded to a report of a collision between a car and bus at the intersection of McIntosh Road and Sheppard Road
The impact of the collision was significant
setting off all the airbags in the white 2018 Hyundai Kona being driven by a 36-year-old man
The man was the sole occupant and able to get out of the heavily damaged vehicle
It was reported a nearby resident extinguished a small fire that occurred in the damaged front-end of the bus with a garden hose
The damage to the bus caused a fluid leak that is thought to include battery acid onto the roadway
The driver and passengers on the 166 route bus to Manly were not hurt in the collision
remained with the damaged vehicle as the passengers left the scene
The driver of the Hyundai was assessed by paramedics
He was treated by paramedics and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition just before 5.45pm
Firefighters neutralised fluid spills from the vehicles with absorbent material and remained on scene until the vehicles could be towed
The incident closed McIntosh Road in both directions until the road could be cleared

Two people are in hospital after a house burned down at Narraweena
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) responded to reports of smoke and flames coming from a residential property at Ronald Avenue
The occupants of the home were asleep at the time the fire started
Four people were inside the single-level house
Also with them was the woman’s brother
reportedly caused by lithium-ion batteries in an e-scooter that had been charging overnight and ignited
The family said they were awoken by the smoke alarms that had begun sounding
they rushed out of the house in the clothes they were wearing
NSW Police and firefighters from Dee Why Station arrived on scene at around the same time
and the speed with which the fire was spreading
firefighters called for additional fire appliances to attend
Beacon Hill Rural Fire Brigade arrived at Ronald Avenue three minutes later
The intensity of the fire caused a roof collapse (main image)
forcing firefighters in breathing apparatus to attack the blaze from outside the home through windows
They established a defensive perimeter to prevent spread of fire to neighbouring properties as police evacuated residents from their homes
With all four occupants of the home confirmed to be accounted for
NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed the 42-year-old man for burns to his left foot
He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition just after 4.45am
The daughter was assessed for smoke inhalation
and although initially wanting to remain with her family at the fire scene
her mother said she suffered from asthma and was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment
Forestville and Neutral Bay Stations responded to the scene
Three NSW RFS crews responded from Beacon Hill
Davidson and Northern Beaches Headquarters with around a dozen firefighters
but due to firefighters being unable to enter the premises
A reignition occurred shortly after 10.00am
with firefighters from Dee Why Station returning to put out smoking remains of the home
Having escaped with only the clothes on their back
the family said they believed their pet cat to have also been lost in the fire
The premises are understood to be managed by Bridge Housing
and it is believed they are working on alternative accommodation for the family
Fire and Rescue NSW Acting Superintendent Guy Lightfoot said the cause of the fire was under investigation by NSW Police and specialist FRNSW fire investigators
Fire and Rescue NSW have issued the following statement in relation to this morning’s fire:
Four people have escaped an intense house fire
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters responded to the blaze in Ronald Avenue
the crews were confronted with smoke billowing from the single storey home
A collapsing roof and extreme heat prevented the crews from entering the house
so they adopted a defensive strategy to contain the flames
Three of the four residents received medical treatment at the scene
with one person being transported to hospital for burns to a foot
said the occupants had an incredibly lucky escape
“All early indicators are pointing to an e-scooter on charge inside the house as the possible cause
“The nature of lithium-ion battery fires is extremely volatile
they tend to do so extremely quickly and with great intensity
“Despite how quickly the fire took hold
our crews successfully prevented it from spreading throughout the entire home to neighbouring properties,” said Insp Perkins
FRNSW is reminding the public to show extra caution around lithium-ion powered devices such as e-bikes
The public can find further information about lithium-ion battery safety on the FRNSW website
Editorial note: Although the FRNSW statement is technically correct
with only the 42-year-old man immediately taken to hospital as a result of burns suffered in the fire
the Northern Beaches Advocate confirmed a second resident was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation

Firefighters have saved a home at Narraweena after an electrical fire
Just before 3.15pm this afternoon (Saturday
emergency services were called to a report of an explosion being heard and smoke coming from a home at Consul Road North
The alarm was raised by the neighbour of the property
who called Triple Zero (000) when they heard the noise and saw smoke coming from the upper level of the two-storey brick house
The concerned neighbour also called the owner of the home
who had been working out of Forestville Station today
Finding a fire hydrant conveniently located on the front lawn of the residential property
they connected a hose line and equipped with breathing apparatus
the dogs then fled to safety from the smoke-logged home
They were kept in care across the street from the house until the owner’s grandchildren arrived
Firefighters found a portable air-conditioning unit had caught fire
but due to the quick calls from the neighbour
had not yet had the opportunity to spread throughout the house
and using a minimal amount of water to douse the flames
firefighters quickly extinguished the fire just after 3.45pm
containing damage to the upstairs lounge room
They ventilated smoke from the home and conducted air quality testing before handing the premises back to the owner’s grandchildren just after 4.15pm
who arranged to contact an electrician and begin the clean-up
The fire at Narraweena comes only hours after the tragic loss of a home at Davidson last night
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were observed conducting inquiries at the scene
but the cause of the fire is not considered suspicious and no injuries were reported

A police officer has been injured and a man shot at Narraweena
11 June) two male officers from the Northern Beaches Police Area Command were called to a home at Warringah Road
Upon arrival they were approached by a man
understood to be in his 30s and who they believed may be armed with a knife
The man was at the address attempting to gain entry and discharging a fire extinguisher
It is understood the man did not live at the address but NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Leanne McCusker said she did not believe it was a random attack and the man was known to the occupant of the property he was attempting to enter
The full video of the press conference with Asst Comm McCusker is below
Police allege a violent confrontation broke out and the man threw a fire extinguisher at a male officer
was also stabbed in his left hand causing a laceration
It is understood police initially attempted to bring the situation under control using a taser
but it was ineffective in subduing the man
leading to speculation he may have been under the influence of drugs
and the man allegedly wielding the knife sustained a gunshot wound to his leg
It is understood the bullet struck the man in the thigh and passed through his leg
police provided initial first aid to the man until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics who took over care of the man and police officer
Neither injury is believed to be life-threatening
The man with the gunshot wound was assessed and stabilised at the incident scene before he was taken under police guard to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition
The injured police officer was assessed and given initial treatment at the incident scene before being transported to Northern Beaches Hospital in a stable condition
The second police officer was also taken to hospital in a stable condition
it is understood he may have inhaled fire extinguisher particulate
After initial assessments by intensive care paramedics at the incident scene
a rescue helicopter that had been called to land at nearby Beverley Job Park was deemed not to be necessary and released from the incident
NSW Police have declared the event a critical incident and a senior critical incident team from the Hills Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident
The investigation will also be subject to an independent review
Police are exploring whether the incident at Narraweena is related to the incident earlier in the afternoon at Manly, in which a man was stabbed
Police said they were unable to comment due to a critical incident being declared and ongoing investigations
Assistant Commissioner McCusker confirmed the man was known to police
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

There is speculation that a blunt-force weapon such as a hammer may also have been used in the attack

One of the residents told the Northern Beaches Advocate that the man had been involved in a dispute over the ownership of property of a deceased person
Three NSW Ambulance crews responded to the scene

It is understood there could be more sales planned this year
A spokeswoman for the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS)
said the department “continually reviews the suitability of the properties it owns.”
“Proceeds from the sale of assets are reinvested to upgrade social housing and build new dwellings,” she said
FACS continues to own a strong social housing presence in the area.”
The spokeswoman said the government was undertaking a major social housing building program — the largest in the country — to deliver more homes for tenants and NSW families on the waiting list
Families bidding at the auction on Saturday

is on track to deliver 23,500 new and replacement social and affordable housing dwellings by 2026 and will provide a better social housing experience for tenants,” she said
the department would not be drawn on how many public housing properties it owns on the northern beaches
or how many new homes would be provided under the strategy
She said tenants who had lived in the properties recently sold on the northern beaches had “all been supported and successfully relocated mainly within the area.”
He said 12 bidders registered for the auction
Mr Hawley said the property was bought by a builder

Former 2011 premiership winning Sea Eagles player Jamie Buhrer is an Assistant Coach
Orford said the squad's sheer ability and willingness to learn had impressed him
"What stood out most significantly during the pre-season was the mateship these players have formed in such a short space of time,'' Orford said
"They are very determined to do well and they are a hardworking group with great sportsmanship
You can see how motivated they are to get a positive result."
Orford said he was enjoying the opportunity to develop the players' skills
"I want to further develop and install the fundamentals of our game in them,'' he added
"It is not only to improve their skills and performance but to also build their confidence and character as young men."

Have you ever wondered what the home of an interior designer looks like
Take a peek at Kerena Berry’s family home and find out
and if you really like what you see you might even want to buy it
Ms Berry and her husband James Peebles bought their Narraweena property five years ago
and she has used her design skills to create a home that is quintessentially northern beaches
It’s a delicious mixture of coastal casual with some on-trend boho touches that blend perfectly together and make a relaxing home for the couple and their two children Amelia
And they have picked a great suburb — Narraweena has been growing at an impressive rate
In five years the median house sale price has grown by a whopping 73 per cent to $1.395 million
This growth has seen the suburb become a sought-after location for buyers of all types
making it hard to find properties for sale
there are only eight homes on the market in Narraweena
with price guides starting at $1.375 million
Ms Berry is one of the co-founders of an online interior design company known as Designbx
with the goal to make quality interior design more accessible and affordable for everyone
“I started it after having the children and it has been a great experience,” she said
Often the first time people seek out the services of a designer is when they go to sell their home
and many others are deterred by the perceived cost and time involved in working with a designer
The Designbx system is 100 per cent online and uses a team of professional designers to create floorplans and source materials and furniture to bring it all together
meaning everything arrives on your doorstep and all you have to do is follow the plan and put it all together
Ms Berry said it was affordable and practical
She has used her skills to design her own family home and admits it wasn’t super easy
“It’s quite different to style your own home,” she said
but I’m very happy with how it all turned out.”
The home at 29 Connaught St goes to auction on April 1
with a price guide of $1.475 million to $1.6 million
THIS is the second Narraweena property owned by the Housing Department to come onto the market this year
and is set to go under the hammer this Saturday
said there had been strong interest in the three-bedroom home at 31 Oceana St
Co-agent Domenic Coniglio said the property was attracting young families who saw renovation potential
and offered further potential for a granny flat with separate entrance
Other features of the brick veneer cottage include original kitchen with dining area
The department sold another of its three-bedroom houses
MORE NEWS: MOVE 5KM AND SAVE $500K
MORE NEWS: DEMAND FOR SINGLE-LEVEL LIVING
The auction will be held on-site this Saturday
The Department of Housing does not release price guides when selling its properties
however there have been some comparable sales

Fresh from a historic entry into the Tarsha Gale Cup
the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles will play their first ever Lisa Fiaolo Cup match on Saturday
The Lisa Fiaola Cup is a junior competition for female players turning 16 or 17 who play in the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League and is part of the club's pathways program including the Tarsha Gale Cup
Roosters and Steelers in the Lisa Fiaola Cup
Bella Morris from the Narraweena Hawks has been named Manly captain
The skillful hooker has played her Junior Touch Football through the Northern Beaches Renegades and played her first season of junior rugby league last year for the Hawks
Tyra Dymock is also the daughter of Manly NRL Assistant Coach
Manly open their campaign against the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Saturday at 10am
has returned to the Club to take up the position of Sea Eagles U16s Development Coach for 2023
Orford will work with a squad full of talented young rugby league players from clubs across the Manly Warringah District Junior Rugby League
The Manly U16 development team will play matches against fellow development sides from four Sydney clubs
starting with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at HE Laybutt Field
The Sea Eagles will then tackle the St George Dragons
The northern beaches’ burgeoning ageing population has fired the appetite for downsizer properties
Demand is driven strongly by empty nesters looking to move from large family homes but wanting to remain in their area
said it was often challenging to find suitable properties for these buyers
“Many people don’t want to move into retirement villages
That’s where over-55s complexes are meeting a need
although Mr Holm said there were still misconceptions about this style of living
“People think it’s just another way of saying retirement village,” he said
“A lot of people don’t know what over-55s living means and I think there is a need to educate more.”
He said over-55s living was very different in that it was more closely related to general apartment living
except for the fact that residents had to be 55 or over to live there
There was also scope to allow people of all ages with disabilities to live in the apartments
Guests of all ages are also welcome but not allowed as permanent residents
Mr Holm is marketing a two-bedroom apartment in a tightly held complex at 4/47a May Rd, Narraweena
The boutique block of six apartments was built in 2004 and since then there had been only three sales
“Because it was built so well in the beginning and has been maintained
it still looks as good as it did when it was new,” he said
“We have already had about 30 groups through
predominantly downsizers looking to move into something smaller but not wanting to move into a retirement village.”
Apartments of all kinds in Narraweena are scarce and tightly held
only four apartments changed hands in the 12 months to June this year
This means a current median unit sale price is not available
although the median house sale price for the suburb is $1,530,000 – which represents a five-year price growth of 95.3 per cent
The north-facing apartment includes two bedrooms
two bathrooms and a double garage as well as a large terrace
modern kitchen with stone benchtop and integrated SMEG appliances and internal laundry
The apartment was repainted recently and has new carpet and plantation shutters
Other features include airconditioning and security intercom entry
The property is for sale by private treaty
