Coles has reopened its supermarket at Newport with a new range and a new name
The doors to the rebranded ‘Coles Local’ supermarket at Barrenjoey Road
were opened to the first customers just after 9.00am this morning (Wednesday
09 April) following a three-month refurbishment
According to Regional Manager of Coles NSW Chris Cameron (image below
right) the store needed investment to bring it up to date
“The last time the store was invested in was when it was built in 2009
but this is the first major spend the store has had in the last 16 years
so it is a significant milestone for the store
there’s only one supermarket between Avalon and Mona Vale
We can now fill that gap again for the customer
When we use the term ‘Coles Local’
it is actually a local store for the customers
which is slightly isolated from the rest of the Northern Beaches
I think that’s really important; it’s something customers can identify with
“This is our tenth Coles Local in NSW
so we’re obviously moving in the right direction
Head of Coles Local Gemma Koo (image above
left) said that understanding and customising the store for the local community was the key ingredient for Coles Local stores
“Local is very much about trying to understand our community
We have the same amazing prices on our core and essential items
especially in grocery and fresh fruit and vegetables
Then we add extra ‘Coles magic’ working with local suppliers
which is usually one of our stand out areas
“We’re proud of our mural around the whole store
We really want to connect with the community
who has done all the mural work around the store
It’s very beautiful and it encapsulates the feeling of Newport
“This is a very different layout to a normal Coles store
because we try and put the things that matter for a smaller basket
like coffee and juice at the front of the store
We try and lay the store out better towards what the customer mission is,” said Ms Koo
Store Manager for Coles Local Newport Tarnee Wong (image above) has worked on the refit of ten Coles Local stores
She said that when she saw the outlook from the Newport store
she set her sights on taking on the role of Store Manager herself
“It has been a great roller coaster journey
I’ve been supporting Coles Local with renewals for the other nine stores
“We have around 30 existing team members coming back from the previous store
Having one-on-one involvement in the recruitment of those new team members has been a really great thing
because I was able to connect with them prior to being in store,” said Ms Wong
Ms Koo stressed the Coles Local store did not compromise on any of the staple necessities
and the new store actually had a larger range because of improvements to layout
She also highlighted that any special offers available in a full-range Coles supermarket would be available at the same prices at the Newport Coles Local store
Coles Local at Newport will stock more than 774 unique products from NSW producers and features an in-store deli
offering a selection of local and imported cheeses
gourmet antipasto and an extensive entertaining range
The bakery showcases a selection of freshly baked breads and pastries from renowned local suppliers
bespoke loaves and buttery croissants from Sonoma
pillowy soft rolls and indulgent donuts from Baked & Co
and authentic paninis and Pane Di Case from Nonna’s Bakery
For those looking for a hassle-free meal or dinner
the store offers a selection of convenient grab-and-go options
such as sushi from Taiko to gourmet sandwiches and salads from Bread Spread
complemented by Coles’ Own Brand range of ready-to-eat meals
Ms Wong believes beachgoers will love to pop across the road for the in-store coffee machine
frozen dessert bar with mochi and single-serve ice-creams
as well as a selection of healthy snacks from Good Crisp and Keogh’s
Artist Mark Chester Harding said his mural throughout the store is intended to bring Newport’s character to life (images above)
“Having spent my weekends in Newport growing up
I didn’t have to look far for inspiration — it’s a place I know and love
“I wanted to capture the relaxed charm and beauty of Newport but also celebrate the small details that make it unique — the Pittwater boats
“It’s more than just a beachside suburb; it has a strong sense of community and a laid-back energy that I hope shines through in this mural,” shared Mr Chester Harding
Excited Pittwater MP Jacqui Scruby (image above) was on hand for the opening
saying it was good to have a supermarket back at Newport
“Coles Local is a much-needed addition to this community
bringing vibrancy with the great mural on the walls and also a product range catering to a demographic that wants their staples at a price-competitive point but also wants the boutique range of local goods as well,” said Ms Scruby
Coles Local Newport is located at 377-381 Barrenjoey Road
and is open Monday to Saturday 7.30am to 10.00pm and Sunday 8.00am to 8.00pm
The store will work with food rescue organisation SecondBite and local charity Hands and Feet Blacktown to donate unsold
edible food to help feed those facing food insecurity in the area

Omari Patrick (left) celebrates his goal for Tranmere Rovers
Tranmere Rovers finished a lacklustre season on a high as Newport County caretaker boss Dafydd Williams saw his case for the permanent role take a knock with a heavy 4-1 home defeat
The Exiles flirted with relegation this campaign
with Nelson Jardim having stepped down as manager once safety was assured
while Tranmere - under the interim stewardship of Andy Crosby - only made certain they would not suffer the drop from League Two with last week's victory over Crewe Alexandra
With the relegation shackles off for both sides
Shane McLoughlin gave Newport the lead when he won possession in the visitors' box before unleashing a shot that arrowed into the top left-hand corner of the net
But the visitors got back on level terms just before half-time
when Cameron Norman set up Jake Garrett for a goal that seemed to take a deflection on its way in
Kristian Dennis gave Rovers the lead soon after the restart
before Newport's misery was compounded when Kai Whitmore was sent off for a second yellow card
Newport crumbled after that as Omari Patrick
and Josh Davison's header added two more goals
allowing Tranmere to leap-frog Newport to finish 20th in the table on 51 points
while their hosts end on 49 points in 22nd - just one place above the drop zone
Newport want new manager in place by end of the month
Williams open to managing Newport full time
Newport County boss Dafydd Williams told BBC Sport Wales:
"I thought that second half summed us up this season - I thought it was immature
I thought it was naïve and it's just not good enough
"The red card – you can't defend it
a lack of experience and after that you're chasing your tail

Designs for the removal of the level crossing at Maddox Road, Newport have been unveiled
showing new connections to keep locals moving once the boom gates are gone for good in 2026
Removing the Maddox Road level crossing by building a rail bridge allows the nearby Champion Road level crossing to be closed to traffic
a new link road and an overpass for bike riders and pedestrians will be built
The link road will connect Champion Road to Maddox Road directly via Akuna Drive and will be open before the Champion Road level crossing closes
Akuna Drive is a key access point for multiple businesses
and extending the road will make it easier to move around the area and deliver more reliable journey times for locals
The intersection at Maddox Road and Kororoit Creek Road will also be upgraded with an extended right turn lane and a new dedicated U-turn lane to ensure traffic flows during peak times
The new accessible pedestrian and cycling bridge will allow people to cross the rail line and access local businesses on Champion Road and Challis Street
A shared walking and cycling path will also be built on Railway Parade
connecting to the existing path on Market Street
making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists
The project will deliver more parking in the area
building new car spaces near Park Crescent
where it will be easier to find a park and access local businesses and amenities
Maddox Road and Launceston Street will be reconfigured to create safe
free flowing traffic and new pedestrian connections
and engineering requirements have been considered when shaping the project's design
The boom gates at the 2 level crossings are currently down for around 50 minutes of the morning peak while 48 trains run through the crossings
More than 10,000 vehicles go through the crossings each day
The Newport level crossings will be gone for good in 2026
paving the way for the Werribee Line to be level crossing free by 2030

Huw Jenkins spent 17 years with Swansea City
Newport County want to appoint a new manager by the end of May and chairman Huw Jenkins says there has been plenty of interest in the vacancy
Nelson Jardim recently left his role as head coach by mutual consent after just under a season in charge of the League Two club
Assistant Dafydd Williams stepped up to take interim charge for the final two games of the season
with Jenkins looking to make a permanent appointment by the end of the month
"I think it's important it's done in May," Jenkins told BBC Radio Wales Sport
"But first and foremost it has to be right for us – anybody who comes in to manage our club
"They have to know clearly where they are and what we're trying to do."
Former Swansea City chairman Jenkins become Newport's majority shareholder and chairman in January 2024.
Jenkins confirmed there has been more interest from candidates in the managerial position than last year
"Things have definitely changed a little bit
the perception outwardly on Newport County has changed a little bit," Jenkins said
"Some of the conversations I had last summer are different to now because we've had many phone calls off people who are interested in putting their name forward
"People can see and probably feel what we're trying to do as a club
and perhaps they may have been reluctant to dip their toes in the water last season and they wanted to see how things went
"Perhaps they've reconsidered that and feel we can provide as a football club the opportunity for people."
Jenkins insisted appointing Jardim as head coach last July was not a mistake but acknowledged the team had struggled for consistency
"We started the season in a reasonable way
and went on a period of losing a few games," Jenkins added
"That sort of form continued right through the season
"Every time we thought we were getting somewhere we went backwards
and when we would go backwards we somehow found something that got us forward again
"It's slightly been below the word comfortable but overall I think we've got to take it on the chin
"We've got to quickly move on and make sure we learn a few lessons from this year and make sure we're better next year."
Newport's disappointing season ended with a 4-1 defeat at home to Tranmere Rovers which saw them finish just above the relegation zone
Jenkins wants to create a buzz at Newport once again with the club challenging for the play-offs as well as FA Cup runs
"I didn't get involved with the club just to have the odd cup run and
like we have done the last couple of years
just to avoid relegation," Jenkins said
"I decided to take the risk and bring in younger players to develop – we've learnt from that from this season
"Getting into play-off finals like Newport have done with the last 8-10 years is important
"We've got to create that proper mentality within the club that we want to do that regularly
"We want to be up in the top 10 – the odd year you're going to get in there and have a chance and we also need to be around that fighting our way
"My main remit – and it goes back to what I've experienced in the past – is making sure every year you build on it and every year you get better than the year before
"If we continue that we'll certainly have a chance in the next few years to get those feelings back around the club
"It's important we get that feeling back at the club."

Dafydd Williams began his coaching career at Bristol Rovers' Academy
Newport County caretaker boss Dafydd Williams is not ruling himself out of the running for the job full-time
saying he wants to stay at the club "in whatever capacity"
Williams was placed in temporary charge for the final two games of the season following the departure of Nelson Jardim

Williams says it has been an "honour" to manage the side

No rail bridge or trench was possible because of the proximity of multiple fuel and gas pipelines in the rail corridor as well as the necessity of at-grade connections to the adjacent train stabling yards
It was possible to build the bike and pedestrian bridge close by
with the use of long connecting ramps to enable a comfortable ride up to the bridge span
positioned with sufficient safety clearance above the overhead rail power lines
Lookouts and seating are incorporated into the structure
The project will also deliver a new section of trail along Railway Parade from Maddox Road connecting to the existing trail along Market Street
which takes riders into central Newport at the railway station
in a separate project along the rail corridor
a new section of trail is to be constructed between Blenheim Street and Mills Street
The designs for both Newport crossings are now out for public consultation and there is opportunity for feedback and questions. https://engage.vic.gov.au/lxrp-newport

As the 2025 TIV Division One Men’s football season approaches excitement levels are at an all-time high at Newport
The Panthers are preparing for their first ever season in the WFNL’s top grade
making the step up alongside last year’s Division Two premiers Sunshine and runners up Albion
It’s been a busy off-season for the club headlined by a raft of big signings including the recruitment of three-time Richmond premiership player Bachar Houli
The man picked to coach the club in their historic first season of Division One football
Ali Hamad says anticipation could hardly be higher for the upcoming campaign
“There’s massive excitement not just within the playing group but also within our community now that we’re in Division One,” Hamad said
to be able to make some big signings and recruit quality players from other clubs and for them to see the club and team we are trying to build is special
“It’s so exciting that there are honestly days that I struggle to go to sleep at night from how excited I am.”
Alongside the signing of Houli is an addition just as significant
the return of a former WFNL standout Nayef Hamad who starred in the EDFL’s premier division last year
The Panthers have also added former and current VFL-listed players in Darcy Cassar
Lukmain Haddara and Phillip Moi Moi as well as bringing in several other strong recruits
And it should come as no surprise that the club’s marquee signings are leading the way in preseason training and driving standards ahead of their top division debut
“Thankfully we’ve got coaches and even players at the club that have connections
but it hasn’t been hard convincing people to join because it’s such an easy club to sell,” Hamad said
how many games he plays it’s totally up to him
“Nayef comes back to the club as a 27-year-old having built a little profile for himself
He has a good relationship with all the players and is a really good one-on-one mentor
Luk Haddara and all of sudden the players that have been at the club whether it’s young players or more experienced players they lift that 10
“It’s good bringing in A graders but there is no point having just A graders if your second tier players aren’t coming to the party too and it’s great to see our middle tier guys are doing that.”
Hamad said the positive feeling around the club hasn’t waned since preparations got underway prior to Christmas with the club so far having more than 70 players attend preseason training
“I thought that the buzz might only stick around until Christmas but since we’ve come back from the break it’s been really positive and the energy and the buy in hasn’t changed
“We’re building a good environment and setting high standards
and the training is enjoyable but at the same time challenging
so words going around that we’re building something special
a very healthy list of reserves and seniors along with plenty of numbers in the thirds
so the club is in a good way at the moment.”
While they won’t set too many expectations going into the season
Hamad said the team’s initial focus will be on kicking their first Division One goal
winning their first Division One quarter and building from there
Newport’s first assignment is a clash with neighbours Spotswood
a rivalry that has never played out on the field but finally will now that both teams are in the same division
And nothing would please the Panthers and Hamad more than winning that first game of the year in front of a large and vocal home crowd
the talk of the cafes and the gyms,” Hamad said
“Most of our boys played the majority of their juniors at Spotswood
and I coached for eight or nine years at Spotswood
“I feel like we’re the little brother that’s now ready to come up and play against the bigger brother
eventually the little brother comes in and shows the big brother up
Works are continuing to get rid of the dangerous level crossings at Maddox and Champion roads, Newport
crews at Maddox Road will start to relocate overhead utility services at the level crossing to enable construction of the new rail bridge over the road
there will be some disruption to traffic from late April to late May
Maddox Road will be closed overnight between Railway Parade and Macaulay Street on Monday 28 April while crews install temporary traffic barriers
The northbound lane of Maddox Road will then be closed to traffic from Tuesday 29 April for up to 4 weeks while workers relocate overhead power lines and poles
Pedestrian and bike access at the crossing will be maintained
Detours will be in place during this time to keep traffic moving safely through the area and to get people to where they need to go
A 24/7 works blitz in the rail corridor will also see buses replace trains on the Werribee Line from 9pm
crews are getting ready to build the new Akuna Drive link road to connect a boom gate free Maddox Road to Champion Road
with crews clearing and preparing laydown areas near Akuna Drive and relocating underground utilities
Plans for new bike infrastructure as part of level crossing removals in Newport have been finalised and include an active transport bridge
The Level Crossings Removal Project had previously announced that the crossing at Maddox Road would be replaced by new rail bridges for both passenger and freight lines
while Champion Road would be closed permanently with a new bike-and-pedestrian-only bridge over the rail line
who would have a minute or two added to their journeys
campaigned against the bike bridge solution at Champion Road
and rail access connections to the nearby stabling and maintenance yards
it was not possible have a grade-separated crossing for either trains or cars at Champion Road
The final designs include the new active transport bridge as well as a new shared path between Maddox Road and Champion Road
which will expand the Hobsons Bay cycling connection through the area
LXRP is also working with Hobsons Bay City to investigate additional cycling connections in the area
such as a new shared-use path at Rosshire Road
The rail bridges now have artistically designed panels instead of plain concrete to improve the look and feel of the local area
shrubs and grasses will be planted as part of the project

Small Business was awarded a 5-year $43M sole-source US Navy contract to produce and deliver SANS (Submerged Acoustic Navigation System) technology
This critical technology is used by the Navy to compute the precise position of a submerged submarine in real-time
SANS technology enables a submerged submarine to determine its position in real-time with GPS-like accuracy over large geographic areas while emitting no noise and using short periodic acoustic signals from one underwater beacon
SANS is being used as a portable undersea tracking range and also supports traditional tracking on cabled Navy underwater ranges
SANS can be integrated into other underwater systems like UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles)

Newport’s rapidly realising potential drew Pilates instructor Dawn Muller to choose it as the location for her Silverback Studios in 2020
“It seemed to me like a good community with great growth in store in the near future.”
Windsor: This inner southern suburb has a quirky soul
Canterbury: This suburb has been hosting legendary Christmas carols since 1940
Only four of 10 shops were occupied when Muller moved into the Hall Street strip near the train station
they’re all full thanks to the arrival of businesses such as cosmeticians
Morning clients at Silverback Studios can follow their class with a coffee and a bacon-and-manchego omelette at Pango cafe

Newport 1881 on Mason Street is, without a doubt, my pick of the cafes in the area. The reliable quality of the coffee, the excellent service and the staff are all absolutely delightful, and it’s always worth considering one of their cakes as well, including gluten-free versions.
Newport Lakes Reserve really is hidden away in the middle of Newport and encompasses some of the suburb’s most beautiful pieces of nature. Its bushland setting is a great place where families often picnic, or you can just enjoy a leisurely walk while taking in the scenery.
Newport is a smart option when buying a property, considering its proximity to the Melbourne CBD and Williamstown’s swimming beach. It’s also affordable compared to other suburbs across the bay, so it’s little wonder buyers from across Melbourne have been considering it for their next move.

It also packs on the charm with a welcomingly leafy front garden and deck segueing into a great light-filled, open-plan renovation with a generously sized kitchen.

Former AFL premiership player Bachar Houli is making a surprising return to local football, joining the Newport for the upcoming season in the Western Football League.
Despite his decorated AFL career with Richmond, which included three premierships, Houli had firmly believed his playing days were over.
“I never thought this day would come,” he admitted. “When I finished playing AFL, I said to myself, there’s no way I’ll put the boots back on. My mates and my foundation were all very surprised when that announcement happened.”
Houli, who has strong connections to Newport, is embracing the transition back to grassroots footy but acknowledges the adjustment from AFL to local level has been significant.
“It’s been good, but it’s a bit different to be honest. It’s hard when you come from an elite environment,” he said. “It’s taking me a while to get used to the messaging, the drills, the organisation, but I’ve just got to take a step back and realise that it’s just local football.”
While many expect Houli’s on-field experience to be a huge asset, he is more focused on his off-field contributions.
“I’m not really fussed about the on field performance and the contributions I can potentially have, for me it’s all about off the field and what I can do from a values perspective and just being true to yourself.”
Having recently recovered from a serious car accident, Houli remains uncertain about his playing future.
“My body is feeling good. I surprised myself; I didn’t think I would get this far. I committed and said I’ll do whatever I can, but that’s not a guarantee I’ll play round one, you just don’t know with old bodies these days” he joked.
Newport’s elevation to division 1 football for the first time has added excitement to the club, and Houli sees plenty of promise within the squad.
“The club is in a great position now. We’re all excited, and we have some amazing talent. We just have to come together, and that’s going to take time.”
Much of that young talent has ties to Houli’s own foundation, which has mentored countless young Muslim footballers over the years.
“Part of me being at the footy club is I’ve got so many of the under-18 boys and those who have just graduated from under-18s,” he said. “They came through the Bachar Houli Foundation.
“I’ve grown up seeing a lot of these kids since they were 12 and have mentored them throughout their life. Sometimes it can be a bit awkward for a 17-year-old to pick up the phone and call Bachar Houli, but I tell them, ‘Please, there’s no time when I won’t pick up the phone and help.”
Newport kicks off its season on Saturday at Langshaws Reserve, against the club where Houli was drafted from, Spotswood.
Huw Evans Picture AgencyPublished2 May 2025Caretaker boss Dafydd Williams wants to put smiles on fans' faces in Newport County's final match of the season - and get their "juices flowing" for 2025-26
who took charge following Nelson Jardim's departure last month
says it has been a "disappointing" campaign with County sitting 21st in League Two
But he wants to end the season on a high when they host Tranmere Rovers at Rodney Parade on Saturday
urging his players to show more grit and determination than they have at times this season
"I want to see a Newport County performance
aggression and a competitive edge to us," said Williams
"I want us to get more attacking outcomes and defend our goal a bit better
There's been a lot this season where some might feel we've become disassociated with what a Newport team looks like and feels like
"We want to give everyone a great afternoon to finish off what's been a disappointing season
"I'd love nothing more than to give them that feeling at 5pm on Saturday that 'I've watched (a classic) Newport County today'
"Hopefully they can see a performance that gets the juices flowing for next season."
Williams stepped in for the final two games of the season following Jardim's departure by mutual consent after just under a season in charge
In recent months County have struggled to string wins together and climb the table
But Williams, who says he is open to succeeding Jardim on a permanent basis if asked
believes fans can feel optimistic of improvements in 2025-26
"I do think it's an exciting time for the club mid-to-long term," he said
if we can bring back that Newport County feeling on a Saturday afternoon
then I think it'd be a really enjoyable place to be
and something I'd love to be a part of."

Your feedback has helped us better understand the needs of the community
our technical assessments and engineering requirements have shaped the project designs
Early works have started to deliver construction equipment
install temporary fencing and relocate utilities
Major construction will begin in early 2025
We’ll let the community know well in advance of any upcoming disruptions or changes in the local area
the project will allow for more trains to run more often on the Werribee Line in future

The road network within the Newport and Williamstown North area will continue to perform well following the closure of Champion Road at the level crossing in 2026
Our traffic modelling shows that most of the community will use Maddox Road and Melbourne Road via Kororoit Creek Road during peak periods
The new link road will primarily be used by locals for neighbourhood and local business trips and will
Removing the boom gates will improve traffic flow and create more reliable journeys on Maddox Road and help to maintain the strong local road network performance in the Newport and Williamstown North area
This is further improved by the changes we will make at the intersection of Maddox Road and Kororoit Creek Road
To make way for the new link road there will be changes to parking on Maddox and Champion roads
Akuna Drive and Launceston Street as well as to traffic movement on Champion Road
We have worked to provide an overall increase in car parking in the local area with new spaces added to Park Crescent
including a pedestrian and cycling bridge over the rail line at Champion Road and a shared path along Railway Parade to Market Street
These new paths will provide safer options for active transport
offering an alternate way for the community to connect with local businesses and nearby parks
We’ll plant trees and work on landscaping in and around the project area once major works are completed in 2026
including the types of trees and shrubs being planted in your neighbourhood
will be shared with the community as the project progresses
the Newport and Williamstown North communities provided feedback about origin and destination travel patterns

A teenage girl was taken to hospital after crashing on an e-bike at Newport
Just before 5.45pm yesterday evening (Saturday
NSW Police and NSW Ambulance responded to a report of two girls on an e-bike colliding with a car at Beaconsfield Street
were riding an e-bike up Beaconsfield Street
when the rider found herself in the wrong gear to pedal effectively for the steepness of the incline
One of the girls on the e-bike was overheard telling police they attempted to perform a U-turn to go back down the hill to change gears
they turned directly into the path of a grey 2002 Nissan Pulsar hatchback coming down the road
The driver of the vehicle claimed the e-bike came out in front of the car with no warning
The e-bike and girls were hit front on by the vehicle travelling near the speed limit
The two girls were sent flying as a result of the collision
but the force damaged the bonnet of the car and smashed the windscreen where one of the girls impacted
Paramedics assessed the two girls thrown off the e-bike
one of whom sustained only minor grazes and did not require further treatment
where she had been moved and assisted by bystanders
which included abrasions and bruising to her head
she was slowly assisted to stand and able to walk to the ambulance stretcher
She was loaded into an Intensive Care ambulance and taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were seen conducting inquiries
including speaking with the occupants of the car
The driver was breath tested at the scene by police
Last May, a senior police officer called for tougher rules on e-bikes. The Northern Beaches is understood to have one of the highest concentrations of e-bikes in NSW, prompting Northern Beaches Council to introduce an e-bike code last year
NSW Police are seeking public assistance in relation to this matter. If you have any information that may assist them with their inquiries, please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

A diver has been found dead after a search and rescue operation at Newport Beach
Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) Newport patrol was approached by a diver who said he had not seen his friend for some time
The men had been skin diving at the southern end of the beach
Newport patrol launched three Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRBs)
and they were joined by two additional IRBs from Bilgola and Bungan Beach and three SLSNSW jet-skis
NSW Police Marine Area Command sent a boat from Church Point
and they were joined by three Marine Rescue NSW search vessels
The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter also responded to the area but after an initial sweep
departed when the NSW Police PolAir helicopter arrived to assist with the search
The search was focused in the area around the Newport rock pool at the southern end of the beach and through the area known as ‘crosswaves’
Items believed to belong to the missing diver were found
Dye packs were dropped into the water based on the location of the belongings and a line search of the water was undertaken from midway along Newport Beach to the reef
Just before 11.30am lifesavers located the man’s body in the water and pulled him into an IRB
He was then taken to the water police vessel where his body was transferred and taken to the Marine Area Command base at Church Point
The man is understood to be approximately 50 years old
Following inquiries by the Northern Beaches Advocate
a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed the man’s body had been recovered
emergency services were called to Newport Beach following reports of a concern for welfare for a man who was swimming in waters nearby
“Officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended
and a search commenced in the area including Marine Area Command
Marine Rescue and a Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter
the man’s body was located in waters nearby
The body is yet to be formally identified; however
A report will be prepared for the Coroner,” said the NSW Police spokesperson

Lawrence Newport was out walking his dog in a local park in south London when he saw what he initially thought were two pit bull terriers hanging from a tree
“They were triple the size of a pit bull and were gripping a branch,” Newport
who was working as a law lecturer at Royal Holloway
“But I knew from my law degree that pit bulls had been banned in Britain.”
The ferocity of the dogs disturbed him and after returning home
which he discovered had increased significantly since the pandemic
On 6 June he published a Substack article provocatively headlined “Why are so many children dying to dogs in the UK?”
which are known for their strength and stamina
He followed it by posting a video on the same theme on YouTube
after which he was contacted by a victim-support group
“There were a lot of people who would speak in private but few would speak out publicly because they feared the consequences
Newport became the de facto leader of the campaign to ban the XL Bully and shared research with special advisers he knew who worked in the Conservative government
The campaign developed momentum: on 1 February 2024 it became a criminal offence to own an XL Bully without a valid certificate of exemption
“The entire academic and policy establishment is against you if you go public on something like this,” he said
“And you receive direct threats from owners
For months he was subject to sustained online abuse and death threats
he and his family were advised by an off-duty police officer to leave London for several weeks because of fears over their safety
Royal Holloway received a daily stream of anonymous emails in which defamatory allegations were made against Newport
“It was very intense and driven by pure emotive hatred
It really affects you and I hid away for nearly a year.”
having resigned his academic post at the end of 2023
is leading two new campaigns: one dedicated to promoting economic growth
the other to “crushing crime” (he also wants a cross-party inquiry into the grooming gangs scandal)
He became interested in the criminal justice system because of the number of people he knew who’d had mobile phones or bikes stolen in London without any police action being taken
He is adept at using video and social media to popularise his campaigns and is encouraged that “you can reach huge numbers of people online very easily and quickly”
He has since become close to Dominic Cummings (“we bonded over campaigns and death threats”)
and his work is being noticed inside the Labour government; I was first alerted to him by a senior adviser to a cabinet minister
as he calls himself on social media using the professional honorific (he has a PhD in history) – organised a cross-party event in Bristol on growth at which the speakers included Cummings
co-leader of the 110-strong Growth Group of Labour MPs
who in the early years of the coalition government worked as an adviser to Michael Gove at the Department of Education before leading the campaign for Brexit
He was never part of the Westminster-policy-media-think-tank establishment or Oxbridge networks
He was an undergraduate at Kent University but suffered acutely from obsessive compulsive disorder and was encouraged by his mother to take a year out from his studies
He published a remarkable Substack post about exposure therapy and the long
When I mentioned that I’d read and admired the piece he seemed surprised and moved
“You are the first person to ask me about that,” he said
I was extremely thin at the time and not very well
I’d literally battled things when I thought I was going to die
when I thought people I loved were going to die
I wanted to follow what I thought was true and not be held back
And now I really don’t like constraints because I spent years being truly constrained in a very bad way
It still crops up from time to time – such as when I was having the death threats – but nowhere near in the same way.”
Newport repeatedly spoons sugar into several cups of tea and uses laughter as a form of nervous punctuation
especially when recounting periods of stress or trauma
Is he part of the ecosystem of the new online radical right
He replied by pointing out that his parents were Labour voters and his grandparents Brexiteers: “Life’s complicated!” Above all
he wants to challenge consensus and groupthink
and use data to sharpen public understanding of system failure
Newport aligns with Cummings – but also with Morgan McSweeney
Keir Starmer’s chief of staff – in his critique of state failure

“There was one day last November when a third of crown courts were shut
My mum said to me: ‘Why can’t the government just make the courts open?’ That would make sense
People are shocked when they hear the courts can choose to shut… If you try to nail down who is responsible
McSweeney has said that many people in the country have had “the hope beaten out of them”: they no longer believe change for the better is even possible
“It’s about more than system failure,” Newport said
They’re not able to look at the world and ask: ‘How do you fix this thing?’ Instead
they think: ‘How can I fix this thing in a way that my dinner parties would agree?’ The whole Bully campaign was a lesson in: how do I get it to be high-status to talk about this issue?”
If he is sceptical about the constraints of Westminster politics and what he describes as “the failure of government to act on what people want”
he believes in the potential of coordinated action
He mentions how the woke and environmental movements have influenced public policy
“My view is if you build coordinated groups
you can change the vibe and suddenly it becomes high-status to talk about it at dinner parties.”
You must take people’s frustration and anger in a constructive direction because the alternative is dangerous
I want to live in a country where things work
and my son is going to have a better life.”
