Beloved family-owned Italian marketplace Mercato is set to open a second location at the former Le Cornu site in North Adelaide
is set to open a second location at the old Le Cornu site this year
bringing their Italian-centric style of living through fine food
and we’ve been operating for over fifty years,” shared Managing Director
“It started as my parents providing fresh food to the Italian community
that’s who they connected with and a lot of their choices at the time were based around their origins
It was also a bit of a general store with everyday lines to cater for the basic needs of life as well
“After hours when supermarkets were closed
they would reap the benefits of that and would sell to anyone who needed a loaf of bread or a carton of milk after five thirty
Mercato has grown into the ultimate everyday marketplace providing quintessential Italian household staples to the Italian community
“These days we provide Italy to the general community
We’ve now tailored our offering to be Italy within the four walls in which we operate
and we are focused on the Italian way of life and the way Italians eat
Their approach to food and wine is not by having everything in abundance
It’s about whatever’s grown in the backyard or whatever’s caught off the closest coast
you know you’re going to get a little bit of produce
This is the ethos at the current Mercato location in Campbelltown and is sure to be seen at the new location on O’Connell St
you’ll find a bustling marketplace and a vibrant bar serving up authentic Italian coffee
house-made pastries classic Italian dishes
The staples that have made Mercato a household name will carry over to the new North Adelaide location
alongside a strong focus on merging retail and entertainment
but still have that authentic Italian market vibe
“North Adelaide is going to focus on retailtainment
It creates a combination of retail shopping with entertainment
and that’s how we’re approaching the new location.”
you’ll find Mercato at the $300 million Eighty Eight O’Connell development

A show-stopping $50m redevelopment of the scenic North Adelaide Golf Course will soon be underway after a confidential masterplan was shared
A show-stopping $50 million redevelopment of the scenic North Adelaide Golf Course is in planning stages after a confidential masterplan was quietly shared on the Adelaide City Council’s website ahead of Premier Peter Malinauskas announcing LIV Golf’s move to the city alongside golfing legend
The 2018 Adelaide City Council original masterplan outlined potential upgrades
a two-storey clubhouse overlooking the River Torrens
While the plan was put on hold in 2021 due to cost and land concerns
with expectations that upgrades could be completed as early as 2027 or 2028
with support from the Adelaide City Council – which has managed the golf course for over 100 years – is working to ensure that North Adelaide Golf Course remains publicly owned and operated throughout any redevelopment process
With Greg Norman’s world-class design firm at the helm of a brand new redevelopment plan
the upgrade is expected to include a top-tier 18-hole world-class championship course
The concept design on the council website has artist’s impressions for a luxury clubhouse and event space that features a cantilevered section stretching out over the River Torrens (Karrawirra Pari)
giving it a striking floating effect that blends modern architecture with the beauty of the riverfront
A two-tier golf driving range originally proposed
offering elevated views from the upper level
with high-tech bays designed to help golfers of all skill levels refine their swing
an artist’s impression of a function centre showcases an underpass
allowing seamless access to new facilities and fairways
The transformation is being positioned as a key factor in securing LIV Golf Adelaide’s future through to 2031
while also attracting global golfers to South Australia and positioning Adelaide as an iconic venue for world-class events
“LIV Golf Adelaide is the realisation of what LIV Golf can be around the world
What LIV Golf has built has never been done before
changing the sport for the better while having a lasting impact on communities like Adelaide
I’m honoured to design a world-class course that will benefit current and future generations here in Australia
LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil echoed this sentiment
“LIV Golf Adelaide is the global showcase – the best stars
Huge thanks to Premier Malinauskas and the people of South Australia for their commitment to making this a long-term home for LIV Golf.”
The tournament’s popularity continues to soar
with LIV Golf Adelaide 2025 drawing 102,483 fans over three days
The event has contributed $136 million to South Australia’s economy in just two years
cementing its place as a must-attend golf event with a festival atmosphere featuring elite players
The 2026 tournament is expected to take place at The Grange Golf Club
with more details to come as planning progresses

A sweet new spot is coming to O’Connell Street in North Adelaide this February – ‘Fro Yoh’ is a fresh frozen yogurt store
ready to serve up something different to SA
Created by husband-and-wife duo Jad and Rachelle El Banna
Fro Yoh will bring international-inspirjaed flavours
and a funky retro-style fit-out that’s sure to turn heads
who also own the popular St George’s Bakehouse next door
are no strangers to the hospitality industry
Having spent over 20 years working in chicken shops
Jad and Rachelle are now venturing into the frozen yogurt market
Their experience in running St George’s
where they’ve been for the past two and a half years
has given them a deep understanding of customer service and the importance of creating a community-focused space
but we noticed something was missing,” Owner Jad El Banna says
“The inspiration for us really was that frozen yogurt is just popping off at the moment – it’s such a fun concept of going in and building it yourself
We took that and found a great spot in O’Connell Street
and we started putting the dream together.”
Fro Yoh is set to stand out from the crowd with a focus on having not just classic flavours
but a range of exciting new options inspired by Jad and Rachelle’s Lebanese heritage
“We go to Lebanon most years and try all these new ice-creams and frozen yogurt flavours that are out of this world
stuff you don’t actually see here,” Jad says
“We want to come with something unique
We want to bring a difference to the rest of the market.”
Expect to find a mix of adventurous and classic flavours at Fro Yoh
Jad says they plan to rotate flavours regularly
introducing new options and keeping things fresh based on customer feedback
but Jad and Rachelle want to take it a step further with more premium options
and other high-quality toppings that take the entire frozen yogurt experience to the next level
The aesthetic of Fro Yoh will be just as fresh as the treats they’re serving up
Rachelle El Banna has taken the lead on the shop’s design
with a playful pink colour scheme and simplistic style
with lighting that brings everything together
While Fro Yoh in North Adelaide will be their first frozen yogurt store
Jad and Rachelle have big plans for the future
with hopes to open several more locations across the state
we want to do something that Adelaide hasn’t seen yet
We want to bring flavours in that no one has
so really our inspiration comes in giving to the people,” Jad says
With the nearby college students likely to be a big part of their customer base
Fro Yoh is set to become a popular hangout for young people on O’Connell Street
Jad and Rachelle are excited to open their doors
and share their passion with the local community

A new cafe has popped up in North Adelaide
and it’s offering delightful cloud drinks
and brightly coloured brunch to light up your mornings
A new cafe has popped up in North Adelaide and it’s offering delightful cloud drinks
Full disclosure: I am jumping for joy that there’s a new spot serving heavenly cloud lattes
Cabana Cafe only just opened its doors in February
with a soft opening which the venue purposely held off promoting
and after sharing some beautiful pics with the world
If you want to add some flair to your mornings
Cabana’s unique drinks might be just what you need
Customers have been particularly drawn to the cafe’s signature matcha
of which owner Vichika Beung tells us there are two types
“We’ve been really popular for our drinks,” Vichika said
“A lot of people come back for the matcha
The sweeter side of matcha is very popular
so that’s what we use for our cloud drinks
Then we’ve got another matcha for people who prefer a more bitter flavour
It’s still a mild bitterness but just doesn’t have as much sweetness as the matcha cloud.”
Or maybe you’ve got a serious sweet tooth
Another customer favourite is the Dubai Cloud Iced Latte
If you haven’t seen the viral Dubai chocolate craze that’s just hit Adelaide you might not be living on a rock
but you probably haven’t been on TikTok recently
I’ll paint the picture: Dubai chocolate is a rich block of chocolate filled with knafeh (made with spun pastry dough) and pistachio
It has a delightful texture which combines the delicate crispness of knafeh with a soft
with crushed pistachios adding a subtle crunch
The drink has all the qualities of the pistachio filling without overdoing the sweetness of the original snack
Vichika developed the Dubai Cloud Latte through multiple iterations in the Cabana kitchen
Those would be my top three at the moment.”
But maybe you’re happy to stick to a trusty hot flat white or a long black – I don’t blame you
searching far and wide before bringing on their favourite coffee on the market by a Melbourne roaster called Clark St Coffee
“I wanted to get the best coffee I could,” Vichika said
There’s some great coffee in Adelaide
but my absolute favourite coffee is from Melbourne
I stayed in Melbourne for about three months a while ago and I would always go out and try coffee areas because I lived in the city.”
I like smooth tasting coffee,” Vichika continued
I thought I’d just call them and see what they thought about sourcing to Adelaide
Clark St owner Melissa Floreani grew up in Adelaide and had already started looking to bring her coffee back to SA
The cafe’s drinks might be where the hype is at
but it’s hard to look past its bright
flavoursome menu which complements the sweet and punchy flavours of the lattes
Vichika’s favourite menu item is the Blissful Beetroot dish
featuring a perfectly balanced combination of beetroot spread on toasted sourdough topped with creamy cheese
The cafe initially set out to serve up flavourful sandos
looking to take advantage of the popularity of the fare
“I started with the sandos,” Vichika said
“Because they’ve been really popular
It’s got more of a soft pillowy texture compared to regular white bread
It’s also got a sweeter taste.”
“We focussed on the breakfast and brunch menu and making it really colourful
We always made sure to perfect a dish before we brought it out,” Vichika added
This was also the multi-talented Vichika’s doing
taking a leaf out of her own architectural experience book
“I designed the place so that it’s a comfy cosy atmosphere
and I wanted it to be designed around the word ‘cabana’
I used lighting especially to give it the feel of a cabana or a sort of hut,” Vichika said
“I’ve also created space so people can work there
Instead of studying at home or staying at uni
I’ve made sure there are plenty of power points and that the cafe has wifi.”
It seems as though every detail is thought out
as the space turns from cafe to restaurant at night
Although the establishments are under the same name
the restaurant operates under a totally different concept
Cabana Restaurant serves up Middle Eastern cuisine and premium shisha with a mix of indoor and outdoor seating
the restaurant opens its doors at 5pm in the same venue
Vichika shared that she wants the cafe to be a vehicle to connect with the community
and has already begun to put ideas into action
Cabana will hold its very first Cars and Coffee event
calling an automotive group to roll up in a collection high end cars for a neat spectacle while you grab your morning fix
Whether you’re in it for the cloud lattes

But the real star is their all-South Australian wine list
featuring top drops from renowned regions like Eden Valley
They have selections from wineries like Rockford
If you’re more of a coffee person, Cottage Kitchen will also be serving up a rich
They’ll also have a selection of teas from their T-Bar
including their own unique Cottage tea blend
Cottage Kitchen is housed in a building rich in history
with a design that beautifully blends Victorian charm and contemporary elements inspired by its unique architectural features
the interior showcases the cottage’s historic character
cozy vibe that has both a rustic charm and a Mediterranean warmth
The interior features handcrafted details like olive trees and local artwork for added intimate touches
The result is a stunning space that’s both timeless and modern
Cottage Kitchen is located just a stone’s throw from Adelaide Oval and the Adelaide Zoo, on the charming Tynte Street in North Adelaide. Nestled among the beautiful, leafy streets of the area, Cottage Kitchen will be ready to welcome diners from this Thursday, and you can now make reservations via their website
in North Adelaide has quietly become the city’s hardest booking
this tiny Turkish restaurant has quietly become the hottest ticket in town
and by the time you read this probably til December
I’ve heard from people lucky enough to jump on this special restaurant offering in Adelaide before the book now button on their website literally went “nuts”
Co-owners Gökçe and her husband Enver Tuğrul
can’t believe how popular their little restaurant concept has become
“We have a huge waiting list and everyday more people contact us to book it,” said Gökçe.“I am so very grateful that word has spread and people love our food.”
Gökçe and Enver have created a warm and welcoming space where food brings people together
With a deep respect for heritage and a passion for hospitality
they’ve built something that feels less like a restaurant and more like a heartfelt invitation into their world
“It all started with inviting our neighbours over for some traditional Turkish food and treats,” said Enver
Walking into Mini Lokanta feels like you’ve somehow snuck into a dinner party at a friend’s house
if that friend happened to be a phenomenal Turkish cook with a talent for hospitality
who runs the kitchen has created something that goes beyond food
Every dish feels like it belongs to a story
originally shared in a family kitchen somewhere between Istanbul and the Aegean coast
every plate hits the table looking like it’s been made just for you — because it has
delicate Turkish dumplings swimming in garlic yoghurt
golden pastry rolls stuffed with Turkish pastrami and melting cheese
And then there’s the muhallebili kadayif
which is creamy custard meets crisp roasted shredded filo and walnuts
you’re also invited to BYO with no corkage
Gökçe leans heavily on generations of family recipes
the kind passed down over kitchen tables rather than scribbled in cookbooks
Guests mention how she’ll pop out from the kitchen mid-service
like you’re a regular at a family gathering
It’s the sort of detail that keeps people talking long after the plates are cleared
seem designed to make you forget you’re in a restaurant at all
“We have traditional Turkish instruments and a vinyl record player with a collection of Turkish vinyl I collected from Turkish flea markets
At the end of the evening our guests usually end up playing music or singing along,” said Enver
and scoring a table is starting to feel like trying to get into an underground gig you heard about from a friend of a friend
The kind of place you want to tell everyone about
but also secretly want to keep to yourself

A goalless third quarter proved to be the difference in South Adelaide’s 16-point loss to North Adelaide at Magain Stadium
North Adelaide started the opening quarter as the more dangerous of the two sides
kicking the first three goals of the game to put the hosts on the back foot early
Thomas Simpson put pressure on his defender in a one-on-one contest to receive a free kick
The subsequent 25-metre penalty made the set shot a certainty
Skipper Jesse Nye once again led the way in the midfield
finding the ball with ease and providing plenty of pressure through strong tackles
South Adelaide managed to get the game back on level terms
reducing the margin to just 12 points by quarter time
Many of South’s prime movers started to get busy at the beginning of the second term
with Angus White and Kodah Edwards winning their share of the clearances
It wasn’t just the midfield that was responsible for starting forays forward
defenders Jake Wigzell and Brady McDonald were often the first link in the chain off the half-back line
South finally got reward for effort when Kody Shortridge slotted a composed set shot from close range
The scoreboard pressure continued moments later when Benjamin Dittmar showcased his pace and skill to soccer the ball off the ground and over the line for his first goal of the game
Dittmar would once again terrorise North’s defenders
this time converting a set shot from 30 metres out to give his side a five-point lead
while also not hesitating to rebound the ball from half-back
The tenacity and overall skill of South was on full display
with Edwards’ superb one-handed pick-up eventually resulting in a brilliant collect and goal from Harrison Davey near the boundary
South’s lead extended to 16 points after a congested snap from Simpson for his second goal
A late goal to North reduced the half-time margin to under two goals
Eager to increase their lead in the third term
South came close to the first goal of the quarter when Dittmar’s set shot attempt went wide
kicking 27 of the next 28 points of the game to regain the lead
Tommy Saunders and the rest of South’s defensive unit battled hard against a rampaging North
but they couldn’t stop the away side from taking a 16-point lead into the final break
Lucus Gordan’s brilliant kick inside the middle of the ground started a chain that resulted in Edwards marking strongly on the lead
Needing the first goal of the final quarter
Edwards remained composed and converted his set shot to reduce the margin to just 10 points
North was able to take the wind from South’s sails by kicking the next two goals
He had a good opportunity to reduce the deficit to three goals
Cameron Woods’ long-range goal from 50 metres out gave the home side a glimmer of hope
North were able to shut the game down and restrict South from eating into the margin late in the last term
Shortridge managed to get out the back of the contest and convert his second goal
which reduced the final margin to 16 points
South Adelaide will look to get back on the winners' list when it faces West Adelaide at Magain Stadium on Sunday
South Adelaide kicked off its season in emphatic fashion
recording a 45-point win against North Adelaide at Magain Stadium
The opening quarter couldn’t have started better for the home side
with Hudson Boal finding the ball with ease and driving it forward
Oliver South kicked the first goal of the game with a fantastic long-range effort from 45 metres out on the run
The lead continued to grow following goals from Fergus Vogt and Joel Wigzell
with the away side kicking the next two goals of the match
After taking a slender two-point lead into the second quarter
Zemes Pilot’s dribbling effort clipped the post
while his snap out of the ruck went just wide
Nathan Flesfadar took it upon himself to kick the first goal of the quarter after receiving a handball and running into an open goal
He added his second minutes later with a composed set-shot effort
South’s ball movement was electric across the ground
with Jayce Potter collecting possessions across the half-back flank and providing a fantastic rebound
The lead continued to increase following Vogt’s second goal of the match
but Max Gregor’s set shot from 30 metres out ensured South went into half-time with plenty of momentum
North came out with strong energy at the start of the third quarter
but it was the away side that struck first
Pilot made up for his two earlier misses when he converted a set shot after showcasing his courage by standing under a high ball and taking a strong mark
Although South were doing most of the attacking
defenders Riley Watchman and Dale Shearer made life difficult for North’s forwards
despite some dangerous forward chains by North
Tyler Harris and Tom Meaney negated North’s earlier goal
while Vogt’s third deflated the away side’s spirit
South’s 32-point lead was going to take some chasing
Joel Wigzell had two golden opportunities to increase the lead but missed with a long running shot and a quick snap
South’s tackling pressure continued despite the commanding lead
Darcy Campbell-Kearney shrugged off a would-be defender and used his turn of pace to burst inside 50 and kick one of the goals of the afternoon
Meaney’s second goal for the day late in the final quarter sealed an emphatic 45-point win for South
though the margin could have been much more had the home side converted its opportunities
South Adelaide will be eager to secure its second win in a row when it faces West Adelaide at Magain Stadium on Sunday
2025The North Adelaide Railway Station opened in 1857 and is the only surviving original station building on the Adelaide to Gawler line
This picture: Experience Adelaide The North Adelaide Railway Station could soon be home to a new tenant
with a pop-up live music venue or hospitality venture suggested for the vacant building
The Victorian-style North Adelaide Railway Station building is a State Heritage Place located in Possum Park/Pirltawardli and has stood vacant since café and retail store Red House Vintage closed in 2019
operators are restricted from removing walls or altering the building’s overall layout which has made it a challenge to lease
Adelaide City Council’s City Community Services and Culture Committee heard last night
A creative venture, like a hybrid live music and hospitality space, has been suggested to activate the space short-term through Renew Adelaide
the not-for-profit organisation that activates underutilised property across the Adelaide CBD
Ben and Miles have proposed a project to collaborate with music industry consultants and local businesses to revitalise the station
Members from the ARIA-nominated rock band Bad//Dreems are potential operators for the spot
according to a proposal included in the committee’s agenda papers
They’ve expressed interest through Renew to create a recording studio
rehearsal space and venue to mentor younger artists and make a difference in this space
If it does become a music venue they’ll make changes like installing indoor soundproofing that’s not fixed to the dwelling to address noise concerns while maintaining the heritage
Renew Adelaide CEO Gianna Murphy told CityMag they’re grateful for the opportunity to propose an activation for “such an important heritage and community asset”
Subscribe for updates“We have been in discussion with a handful of potential operators to understand what opportunities this iconic site might present
and are confident we can support a culturally enriching activation for this precinct and community,” she said
“We look forward to hearing the outcome of council’s decision regarding this beautiful site.”
For the hospitality aspect that’s been pitched to move into the venue’s large four-room space
Renew graduate Olivia Moore is one of the names floated in early talks
Olivia owns Hindmarsh Square’s LOC Bottle Bar and was one of the first Renew Adelaide projects in the east end
Once businesses get their start from Renew
they can negotiate a commercial lease with the lessor and continue operating in the space
Councillor Carmel Noon said she loves the railway station premises and thinks this is a “fantastic step forward”
“I think this is a great option especially using Renew Adelaide because they’re a tried and tested partner of the City of Adelaide and I have absolute faith in them to make this interim 12 months a success that will inform what we do in the future,” she said
The committee were supportive of the council entering into a 12-month lease agreement with Renew to activate the space
they will also open expressions of interest to find longer-term tenants for the space
which will require approvals from the council and Kadaltilla/Adelaide Park Lands Authority
Subscribe for updatesIn 2020, the council leased the North Adelaide Railway Station to the Kaurna Yerta Aboriginal Corporation (KYAC) to establish a Kaurna Community Hub, but KYAC withdrew from the opportunity in 2021.
While there has been interest from different organisations to lease the space since then, adapting the heritage space and little spontaneous foot traffic in the area have been challenges.

Norwood midfielder Billy Cootee pressured by three North players during Saturday night's Round 1 clash
Norwood’s 2025 SANFL season got off to a challenging start on Saturday night
going down to a wayward North Adelaide side by 32 points at Coopers Stadium
On a perfect night for football at The Parade
the Redlegs under new coach Jade Sheedy went down to a quality Roosters lineup
The Roosters ran all over the home side in the first half
leaving Norwood 43 points down and on the ropes mid-way during the second term
the Redlegs worked their way into the match as North Adelaide squandered countless opportunities in the second half
Norwood kicked three goals to two after half time
but it was 3.3 to 2.10 in the second half in a game dominated by the red and white
Gun Roosters Keenan Ramsey and Alex Spina were well held
but Angus Schumacher (26 disposals) and Oskar Faulkhead (23) were a handful
The returning Nik Rokahr was the leading ball winner on the ground with 29 disposals
Matt Ling 23 and Cooper Murley 21 for Norwood as the ball lived in North’s forward half for much of the game
restricting the Roosters to eight goals from 53 entries with plenty of pressured and wayward shots
but Norwood’s struggles came transitioning the ball into the forward line
When they could escape from their defensive zone
the Redlegs looked dangerous running the ball through the midfield but constantly broke down transitioning into forward 50
Norwood headed into Round 1 with an extensive injury list
Will Rowlands and Luke Surman (late out) on the sidelines
as five players made their Round 1 debuts – Liam Ling
Billy Cootee and Jacob Kennerley in the first centre bounce
up against former Redleg ruckman Alex van Wyk
with winger Jake Cresswell finding the first kick of the evening
Rokahr sent Norwood inside 50m and the game
It looked that Norwood had the first goal on the board
but it was touched off Cresswell’s soccering boot
From the kick out it was North which drew first blood
the game became stagnent as the contested game took over in North’s forward half
restricting the Roosters to 1.4-10 to 0.1-1 after 15 minutes
and eventually Ewan Mackinlay kicked the Roosters second
Heard provided an excellent forward 50m contest to spill the ball to Jayden Gale
The Redlegs defenders stood up under the pressure of 16 first quarter inside 50m
and would have been happy to go in and reset at quarter time 17 points down
but North unfortunately found their third in the final minute from Kelsey Rypstra
Recruits for their respective clubs Rokahr (Norwood) and Angus Schumacher (North) started the game strongly
marks +12 and had 16-9 inside 50m entries for 10 scoring shots to two
The Redlegs again moved the ball nicely along the wing and through the middle of the ground
and missing players in space with wayward kicks
as the Roosters slammed home two quick goals early in the second term to make it a 37-point lead at the eight-minute mark
North added another to make it a match high 43 points
and from there the Redlegs managed to maintain the football
The highlight of the first half was Norwood’s first goal
which came off the boot of debutant Liam Ling at the 19-minute mark of the second term
Norwood enjoyed a good patch before half time
and Gale booted the Redlegs second goal three minutes later to make the half time margin 31 points
Rokahr was well held in the second term with just three disposals
while Schumacher (18 disposals) and Faulkhead (17) had found plenty of the footy
but the big difference was the way the teams were directing the ball into their attacking zones
Jackson Callow set the tone coming out of half time
but again it was North that responded on the scoreboard
with Mitch Harvey booting the Roosters seventh goal two minutes into the half
The Roosters started the third quarter strongly
but it was for a return of 1.5 and another shot out on the full
The Redlegs looked dangerous when they could escape defensive 50m
as McCallum went bouncing through the middle of the ground
who turned and spotted Mitch O’Neill 40m out
and reduced the margin to 35 points and gave Norwood a heartbeat
which would have annoyed the Roosters who had dominated the term for no scoreboard reward
Heard and Rokahr couldn’t nail goals which would have brought the margin back under 30 points
Despite North’s dominance in the third term it was one goal each
and the door was ajar at three quarter time
Kennerley came storming out of the centre square to start the final term
which was a snapshot into the night for the Redlegs
Heard nailed a huge goal a few seconds later
and had other chances to ice the game but missed
and Pierce Seymour made the most of a down-field free kick and nailed the goal
but the improved second half is momentum to take into next Saturday’s Round 2 clash with Woodville-West Torrens
Norwood’s extensive injury list was felt most at Reserves level
with the inexperienced Redlegs going down to North Adelaide by 109 points on Saturday night
including three current U18s in Harper Bromson
Jake Hill and Luke Scott who are in their first season of senior football
North kicked four unanswered goals in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to a 18.11-119 to 1.4-10 win
Jack Hodges was the sole goal scorer for Norwood
while George McLeod was the Redlegs best player with 31 disposals on a tough night
Charlie Molan (19 disposals) and Rozenbilds (17 disposals) also showed good signs in their first outings for Norwood’s Reserves side
Jack Michalanney played his first Senior Men’s game at Norwood
during Saturday afternoon’s loss to North

seeks park lands protectionsAn Adelaide City Councillor says he will not support the move of LIV Golf to the North Adelaide Golf Course from 2028
citing human rights concerns over the event’s major sponsor and threats to public access of green space
Adelaide City Councillor Keiran Snape told InDaily he would not support LIV Golf’s move to a redeveloped North Adelaide Golf Course “no matter what”
and has prepared a motion for next week’s council meeting seeking assurances the park lands will be protected
Snape said his goal was to “at the very least
secure some protections for the park lands and some transparency for residents and ratepayers”
Snape said he only found out about the government’s deal to move LIV Golf from the Grange Golf Club to North Adelaide from 2028 on Sunday via the media when the deal was announced
Councillors will receive a confidential briefing next Monday from the state government – “which I certainly welcome,” he said
InDaily understands Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith was in discussions with the Premier about the event’s move to North Adelaide before the announcement
but was not involved in commercial in confidence discussions
“We might finally know what’s going on as of next week
but we won’t be able to share that for God knows how long,” Snape said
Snape will circulate his motion amongst his colleagues today and intends to move it as a motion without notice at next Tuesday’s council meeting subject to Monday’s confidential briefing
The motion requests “a consultation process be undertaken with residents of North Adelaide and affected stakeholders
including the North Adelaide Golf Club members
the Adelaide Park Lands Association and the Adelaide Park Lands Authority” and “that the removal of any significant trees because of a course design be kept to a minimum
and seek written commitment to preclude any increase to built form (buildings)
permanent fencing of the newly developed course
and that temporary fencing be installed only for the minimum time necessary to stage the three-day event”
The Councillor – formerly Deputy Lord Mayor – remained concerned about the possibility of a permanent fence being erected around the golf course
despite assurances that would not proceed from both the Premier and the Lord Mayor
the Lord Mayor said fencing was top of mind but that “there’ll be no permanent fencing
The government has agreed – they’ve stated up front – that it will be public and we have to make sure that the particular sensitivities of all the neighbours are taken into account,” she said
Snape was not convinced: “[The Premier] will not actually get to decide that at the end of the day
and it will come down to insurance and the insurance companies,” he said
“I will be seeking a commitment that we don’t have permanent fencing and we don’t have long-term fencing such as what we’ve seen down in Victoria Park around the 500 where infrastructure – so called ‘temporary infrastructure’ and fencing – is up for months at a time.”
“Especially after all the work Council has done policy-wise to reduce building footprint [in the park lands],” he said
“Greg Norman is wanting to redesign the golf course layout and I’d be strongly against any destruction of significant trees within that design.”
“But we will have to talk with the designers
because I think inevitably there’s going to be some movement of earth,” she said
The SA Greens also raised similar concerns yesterday
with MLC Robert Simms noting: “When parliament resumes this week
the government must clearly detail its intentions”
“Will there be same level of community access to public green space under the LIV golf plan
Will the new Golf Course offer the same level of public service and at what cost to players
Will the Council continue to run the golf course
These are all important questions that need to be considered when assessing any proposal for the Park Lands,” Simms said
“It’s concerning that crossbenchers would potentially give the government a blank cheque when it comes to Park Lands development
Parliament shouldn’t be asked to sign up to this plan
But Snape’s core concerns with the plan are existential too
He said he had issues with the sponsorship of LIV Golf itself
specifically the involvement of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund
The PIF is the nation’s sovereign wealth fund and has, according to Reuters, invested nearly US$5 billion in the loss-making tournament
LIV Golf operating losses in 2023 were at US$394 million
“This golf tournament is funded by oil money and that goes against both the City of Adelaide Climate Emergency Declaration and also the state government’s Climate Declaration,” he said
we should not be supporting Santos having sponsorship rights of the Tour Down Under.”
He also raised concerns with Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, pointing to claims in the media that the nation uses investment in sport to improve its global reputation via ‘sportswashing’.
Indeed, Human Rights Watch claimed last year that the PIF “facilitated and benefited from human rights abuses”
and that the fund’s controller – Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman – “has used the fund’s economic power to commit serious human rights violations and investments in foreign sporting events to whitewash the reputational harm”
daily“There are multifaceted concerns,” Snape said
“Not too many people have touched on [the PIF] this time around
There has been commentary in the past but as part of this announcement the issue has been more about a move to North Adelaide – which I also don’t support.”

The upgrades will enhance the LIV Golf playground and provide tourists and locals alike a world-class public course throughout the year
and LIV Golf Board Member and Australian golf legend Greg Norman announced that Adelaide would remain the exclusive home of LIV Golf in Australia until 2031
an ambitious redevelopment project for the North Adelaide Golf Course has officially began
slated to be designed by Greg Norman’s world-leading firm
In their efforts to transform the course into one of the world’s best public golf venues
the redevelopment will include a new 18-hole Championship Course
These upgrades will not only enhance the LIV Golf playground
but will also provide tourists and local golfers alike a world-class public course to use throughout the year
The State Government and The Greg Norman Company are currently in the early stages of planning the new upgrades
with preliminary designs expected to be revealed later this year
Greg Norman’s company is recognised as one of the premier golf course design firms in the world
with a strong collection of over 100 courses opened across 34 countries and six continents
There’s also no current estimation on the total cost of these upgrades
but the Premier has said costs would be “modest” in comparison to scrapped infrastructure projects like the $700M Riverbank Arena proposed in 2021
LIV Golf is contracted to return to the Grange Golf Club in 2026
The Premier met with the president of the Grange Golf Club over the weekend to discuss an option for 2027 as well
The North Adelaide upgrade is estimated to be completed by 2028
but there is speculation that it could be finished a year earlier
Speaking at a press conference on Monday morning
there is a view and I think it needs to be carefully considered
there is a view that the North Adelaide upgrade could be done by 2027 – I’m a bit more cautious about that
which is why I think there needs to be good faith negotiations between LIV and Grange to see whether or not there is a plus one option at Grange just to cover off on any risk that North Adelaide is not ready by 2027 and those are discussions that will happen.”
Malinauskas also compared this development to the ongoing upgrades to the Adelaide Aquatic Centre
which resides just a few streets away from the golf course
the City Council developed a plan to redevelop the golf course
but lacked the funding to make any headway
“That’s where State Government has invested to take a loss-making old piece of infrastructure off the City Council and now it’s back in State Government hands and we’re going to get a new one out of it that’ll be able to deliver a return to the taxpayer … that absolutely can be achieved with the golf course”
Malinauskas touched on the ideal location of the North Adelaide venue and the advantages of investing in its future: “Nestled in the stunning Adelaide Park Lands
the North Adelaide Golf Course is a stunning platform on which to showcase our city to the rest of the world.”
“The investments we’re making will deliver a high quality outcome for our Park Lands
improvements for members of the public who want to play at North Adelaide
provide a new home for the growth of LIV Golf Adelaide.”
This series of developments confirms the South Australian Government’s strategic vision to harness top-tier global sporting events like LIV Golf not just for sport but also as major catalysts for tourism
they hold the promise of redefining golf in the region while showcasing South Australia’s vibrant community and dynamic cityscape to a worldwide audience

LIV Golf will remain at Grange Golf Club until 2026. But what does the future look like?
Could North Adelaide become the tournament's new home, or will a much-needed upgrade rule out the central location?
"It is a magnificent golf course", Former Lord Mayor, Sandy Verschoor said to Sonya & Jules. "We just decided that was a way too big revamp".

Forward Chris Burgess produced a best on ground performance in Adelaide’s Round Two SANFL, after slotting five goals against North Adelaide on Saturday.
Billy Dowling also impressed with 26 disposals, eight marks and a goal, while Charlie Edwards returned similar numbers with 21 touches, nine marks and one goal.
Zac Taylor (16 disposals, seven marks) and Tyler Welsh (eight touches) slotted two goals each, while Brayden Cook (17 touches, six tackles) and Luke Pedlar (19 disposals) kicked one.
SSP selection Lachlan McAndrew was prolific in the ruck, finishing with 21 disposals, 32 hitouts and nine clearances.
Harry Schoenberg was busy with 19 touches, Chayce Jones had 16, Brodie Smith 18, and Jordon Butts 15.
Other senior Crows in action were Hugh Bond (nine disposals) and Oscar Ryan (11).
Adelaide’s SANFL side will not play this weekend, with a League-wide bye due to Gather Round.
The Crows will return to the field for a Good Friday blockbuster on April 18 against Glenelg at Glenelg Oval, with the first bounce at 4:10pm.

The State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) on Tuesday granted planning consent to a proposed redevelopment of 183 Melbourne Street, North Adelaide – a 1700-square metre development site next to the Lion Hotel.
The project features 35 apartments targeted at homeowners looking to downsize. The majority of homes will have three bedrooms and a floor space of 140 to 150 square metres.

An existing three-level office block on the site will be demolished to make way for the apartment project.
The office is currently home to several commercial tenants, including private health firm Partnered Health, recruitment agency Complete Personnel Group and mortgage brokers Mortgage Choice.

In September, project director Daniel De Conno told InDaily they hope to begin construction within 12 to 24 months and will have to decant the existing tenants.
The land is also home to the state heritage listed former malt house of the old Lion brewery.

One commercial office tenancy will also be available in the new development.
The development represents a new height for Melbourne Street, which is primarily composed of low-rise office buildings. Development in North Adelaide – one of Adelaide’s most historic and heritage-protected suburbs – continues to gradually escalate in intensity.
The 183 Melbourne Street project comes after a separate application was filed in August for a nine-storey apartment building at 18-20 Walter Street, near North Adelaide’s Wellington Square.
Meanwhile, Commercial and General’s landmark redevelopment of North Adelaide’s old Le Cornu site, Eight-Eight O’Connell, is scheduled to open next year.
Subscribe for updatesThe project features two 13-storey towers and one 15-storey tower holding a range of luxury apartments and a retail strip on the ground floor.
one of the newest restaurants to open in North Adelaide
is bringing a new take on the classic dining experience to O’Connell Street
combining the elegance of fine dining with the fun spirit of a bistro
ODÉ’s style is described as ‘fine bistro’ rather than ‘fine dining’
Head Chef and Restaurant Owner Simon Ming explains it best: “There’s two factors: the first is “fine” and the second is “bistro”
which is to give people a sense that our restaurant is flexible
but we are maintaining the high quality on food and drinks in the same time.”
the “fine” represents their high standards – exceptional food
While the “bistro” part makes it clear: this is a place where you can feel relaxed
and choose between a fine dining degustation experience or a casual à la carte menu
One of the standout features of ODÉ is its ability to deliver outstanding food at a price that’s typically not associated with fine dining
“We still want to maintain the best quality
the highest standard that you can find at a restaurant
but we’re not going to overly hype up prices on the menu,” Simon says
ODÉ’s menu is a contemporary Australian fusion
bringing together Simon’s Asian heritage with modern western cooking techniques
By using locally sourced ingredients from South Australia
he creates a multi-layered dining experience that blends different cultures and flavours in a way that’s unique to ODÉ
the wine list at ODÉ is evolving seasonally together with the food menu
featuring a selection of high-end wines from France
“I imagine a plain canvas in front of myself
I use different colours to paint the canvas
It’s the same theory when using different cooking techniques and playing with different ingredients from different cultures and curating them into my own fusion,” Simon says
is the flamed shallot pancake with spiced yogurt and Sichuan peppercorn
It’s a dish that perfectly showcases the fusion of Western and Asian influences that define ODÉ’s style
Inspired by the traditional Chinese shallot pancake
Simon took it up a notch by merging it with an Italian focaccia recipe to create something crunchy and smokey on the outside
yet light and fluffy with layers of seasoning and spring onions inside
the pancake is served with a rich labneh yoghurt dip
seasoned with a spice mix and infused with Sichuan peppercorn oil for a savoury finish
it’s super important to have the bread outstanding on the menu running a Western-style restaurant,” Simon says
“Bread is important in dining culture
and having good bread in a restaurant helps create a strong first impression.”
The service at ODÉ is just as important as the food
and the “fine” aspect of their fine bistro philosophy truly shines here
allowing the small team to engage with every guest personally
The staff takes the time to explain the menu
so that every guest feels like they’re part of something special
modern interior features charcoal walls and shelves filled with wine bottles
The minimalist design creates a comfortable
which is perfect for everything from a casual date night to a special celebration
ODÉ is truly a place where fine dining meets flexibility and fun
You can enjoy a refined degustation experience or a casual à la carte meal

Shane Sody, who is president of the Adelaide Park Lands Association, said that despite much publicity from the Premier around plans to build a new golf course in North Adelaide for LIV Golf
little in terms of details has been released so far
“He’s given no indication of how many significant trees have to be chopped down
how long Park 1 would need to be fenced and the extent of fencing
how many new buildings and what size they would be
The meeting will be held at the North Adelaide Community Centre on Saturday afternoon with a capacity of 100 people
Sody said he expects a full house because “everyone who values the Adelaide Park Lands as open
green public space has an interest in protecting them”
