you always want to take on that responsibility being the coach and a senior player," the former Collingwood on-baller replied when quizzed on wanting to take that crucial shot
I've kicked pretty poorly on goal this year
I've been going at a pretty poor strike rate."
in the inaugural Hall of Fame Showdown last July
And when the game's best player in the first half Shaun Driscoll took a mark of the season contender early in the second quarter and then nailed a running goal around 10 minutes later
the home team was 22 points up and seemingly on target for another win
'Cooky' (teammate Aidan Cook) was sitting behind me and I said
'I'm looking to use you as a platform for me

I got a good ride and someone must have jumped as I got on his shoulder as it gave me a bit of a lift
where he had two bounces and ran 30m before drilling the shot
late goals to Angus Crelley and Jordan McKenzie
Lavington's frenetic pressure was the story from the first half
they're going to trouble a lot of teams," Broomhead revealed
"They're making good choices with the pressure they put on and it's a good brand to challenge anyone."
The Panthers' pressure forced the Hoppers into bombing down the line where the defenders
The teams went into the round 4 clash as the league's top two pressure-ranked outfits and the Hoppers lifted their intensity after half-time
"Our defence wasn't as good in the second half
which is disappointing," Panthers' coach Adam Schneider explained
The third quarter was a cracker with six lead changes
Lavington workhorse Billy Glanvill also showed his class with a snap off the left foot
but Julian Hayes responded with a superb 40m effort
Three goals to Panthers' emerging forward Charlie Sanson
provided quick hands for a Harry Weaven snap to reduce the deficit to two points in the final term
And the coach's composure snared the lead before Weaven crumbed a late goal for a 10-point break
"It was not our best half of footy (in the first half)
but we controlled the tempo a little more after that and when we found a target
Weaven was the Hoppers only multiple goalkicker with three
moving from defence in the absence of key forwards Josh Minogue (broken thumb) and Josh Murphy (Collingwood VFL)
Hayes was electric with his booming kicks from defence consistently setting up attacking raids
Jack Reynolds never stops running and scheming from defence
Layton Taylor took a handful of strong marks in the absence of the two power forwards
while Kane Flack was super clean by hand and foot
Driscoll did not have the same impact after his sizzling first half
Lavington is now away to a resurgent Albury

The Hoppers have 12 Riverina players on their list
Turvey Park export Jackson Weidemann was not named for the away game against Lavington as he is aligned with VFL club Northern Bullants
Darcey Cullen (Yanco Agricultural High School)
Jamie Mooney and Pope (Collingullie-Wagga) and Angus Crelley (Leeton Whitton) have joined the Hoppers since the start of 2023

"Over the last couple of years under Tim (Broomhead)
I've felt a little more comfortable on the field
I know where I stand and what my role is."
The role of any playing coach is threefold; improve every player
get the team playing to the best of its ability and play your best football as well
Former Collingwood midfielder Broomhead has passed every test and 24-year-old Campbell says he is the best coach he has played under
He understands everyone's strengths and weaknesses and he's able to manage that really well," he added
Lavington has been the biggest surprise of the first three rounds
scoring upsets over Wodonga and Myrtleford before a thrilling loss to leaders Wangaratta Rovers
Lavington has the look of North from 2024 where it broke a long finals drought
which makes it dangerous for everyone," Campbell said of the home team

Weaven kicked a crumbing goal at the 21-minute mark of the final quarter for a 10-point lead
Panther Ed Perryman cut the margin to four points
but it was fitting the game's best player in the second half in North coach Tim Broomhead had the ball on the siren
The win capped a stunning round 4 where Albury overcame a 27-point deficit at three-quarter time to edge out Corowa-Rutherglen in a two-point thriller
while Yarrawonga trailed Myrtleford by 23 points at half-time
but then nailed six goals to one to grab a riveting 10-point win
"In my last season at 'Brock' (Brocklesby Burrumbuttock in the Hume League) I played a bit down forward before the finals and in the pre-season just gone I mostly played down forward-ruck
so it was good to get down there and a kick a couple of snags," the 187cm Weaven said moments after the pulsating match
"Tim just told me to make a contest down there
bring the ball to ground and don't get beaten."
Weaven's effort is typical of North's improvement under third-year coach Broomhead
The Hoppers trailed by 22 points after 17 minutes of the second quarter
but then kicked nine goals to five to sit third with a 3-1 record
"We eliminated some of those basic skill errors
we were cleaner and did the basics better," Broomhead replied when quizzed on the fightback

"Of course (we mentioned the Anzac Day hoodoo)
During the last couple of years we've broken most of the hoodoos

Eighteen-year-old Josh Murphy kicked five goals
including a sublime individual effort late in the final quarter when the bouncing ball was racing towards the boundary line
but the youngster tapped it back over his head and then regathered to kick a banana goal
"We got the ball movement going a little bit more and were sharper with our hands," Broomhead said
"We were hard to play against for the whole four quarters and we had a mentality this week we didn't want to give them anything
"There's a lot of guys individually who played really well
but as a group we played with a bit more connection than we have in the last two weeks."
Albury grabbed the lead when Jake Ryan drilled a 40m shot after two minutes as the visitors dominated possession and territory early
but when Cayden Winter powered through traffic to find Nathan Dennis at the 13-minute mark
the Hoppers had the lead and never released it

"I had complaints between games from umpires last year that the sprinklers were coming up
it was a bit dangerous and I was carrying a four-gallon bucket of sand covering them up and getting umpires to check it was safe," Guiney said
"We have plenty to do on a Saturday without having to work on groundkeeping."
The Hoppers have earmarked a number of areas for improvement
But Guiney says the club is hamstrung as the Council's master plan has not been approved
which therefore does not allow it to chase government grants
Indi MP Helen Haines announced at Wangaratta Rovers last December the club will receive $1.45 million for new women's football and netball change rooms through the Commonwealth's 'Play Our Way' competitive grant program
North Albury does not have female football change rooms
while the netballers use demountable buildings
"We've helped funding at Sarvaas Park (in North Albury)
and particularly with female-friendly facilities
we underwent that first-hand with the (Steamers) rugby club
when you want to growth in female participation
you've got to have appropriate facilities," Mr Clancy said
The Hoppers suffered an unlucky break with the master plan
"The original master plan was approved back in 2020 when the sports club went into administration
so over the coming weeks and months we will try and prepare that revised master plan," the Service Leader for City Landscapes offered
but they're starting off a relatively low base
which dates back to when the sports club went into administration and it was handed back to council
"We've been working with the users to bring the facilities back up to a standard that the community expects."
North is one of three Ovens and Murray Football Netball League clubs in Albury
The senior football team was one one of feelgood stories of 2024
snapping a nine-year finals drought and winning through to the preliminary final
but that on-field success was not matched by its facilities
particularly in comparison to neighbouring clubs
is the best regional sporting facilitity between Melbourne and Canberra
while the Tigers' Albury Sportsground has the best playing surface
"We acknowledge last year was a wet football year
but we have photos of this ground taken from aerial drones
it was threadbare in the mid part of the season and I know when we went to Wodonga and Wodonga Raiders around the same time they had a complete coverage of grass," Guiney added
The three parties will now look at Bunton Park's more urgent priorities
The Hoppers start the O and M season at home to Wangaratta Rovers on April 12

it is the ninth time the Hoppers have been involved with a margin of 10 points or less
It started with a three-point win in round 18 to qualify for finals and followed with another three-pointer in the elimination final win over Wodonga
"We've spoken about the importance of being calm and composed
I guess," elated Hoppers' coach Tim Broomhead suggested
"We've played a lot of games now decided by under a kick and we know we make the right decisions in a win and executed really well."
the Hoppers grabbed seven wins last season
but were still not expected to play finals in 2024
they now face Wangaratta Rovers at Wodonga Raiders' Birallee Park

This was easily the best game of the four finals because the teams were always separated by less than three goals
Wangaratta was coming off a woeful display against Rovers
and the club was re-energized despite the withdrawal of premiership captain Michael Newton with a hamstring complaint
Harry Hewitt kicked two goals in the opening eight minutes
but then North booted three in six minutes
Wangaratta star Callum Moore was playing his first game in seven weeks from a hamstring injury and he exploded with three goals in as many minutes as the rejuvenated Pies carried a 16-point lead to quarter-time
Josh Minogue took a spectacular mark against the miserly Michael Bordignon and converted from 40m
had worked his way into form and kicked a goal to take a three-point lead to half-time
but it was only an entree as the lead changed four times in the third term
Strong work by Jack Reynolds and Archer Gardiner handed Minogue a chance and he took a superb mark for the lead
Moore took advantage of a play-on call to run into an open goal for his fourth major
but then the Hoppers kicked two in 30 seconds to regain the lead
Wangaratta went forward and resting ruckman Chris Knowles roved a terrific effort on his non-preferred left from 30m
and then Harry Smart kicked a banana from 15m for a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter
Cody Gardiner kick-started the term by setting up Minogue
but the Pies pushed the lead back into double figures when Knowles landed a belter around the corner from the boundary line
Minogue missed two gettable chances and Moore almost produced a miracle when he charged away from the boundary line
only for the kick on the outside of his foot to hit the post
North's Jackson Weidemman unleashed his lethal left foot off one step from 50m and then Cody Gardiner's goal was the last of the match
Cody Gardiner three goals and Broomhead a double
while Moore (four) and Clarke (three) were the Pies' most dangerous attacking players
Moore has played his last game in the league after a stunning four-year stint
while Pies' captain Daine Porter was chaired off after his last senior O and M game

The visitors carried an 18-point lead to half-time
but Wodonga cut the margin to a kick when the impressive Tom Miller showed tremendous courage to mark near the boundary line and then land a checkside
The Bulldogs had the momentum and the defence repelled a North attacking raid
only for the latter's Layton Taylor to be awarded a free kick and he nailed the shot from 50m
The Hoppers booted three in as many minutes and it was seemingly a match-winning 35-point lead at three-quarter time
Matt Wilson was one of the few Bulldogs to make an impact in the third quarter and when he drilled a shot from 40m in the final term
the home team had kicked four straight to slash the margin to nine points
North won its three clashes against Wodonga last year by an average of only two points and another single-figure margin looked likely until Flynn Gardiner skied a ball and younger brother Archer took a superb running mark over his shoulder and goaled from 35m to seal the result
Werribee-aligned Archer Gardiner was best on ground with three goals
while Flynn and Josh Murphy chipped in with two apiece
The four Gardiner boys created their own history
kicking at least one goal apiece for the first time when they have played together
New on-baller Ben Rigoni was also outstanding

Albury player Josh Hudson was hospitalised after the Albury Sportground incident
Albury Local Court heard Mr Hudson had been involved in a scuffle with North Albury player Jackson Carey
which Mr Hudson said was "nothing out of the ordinary"
"I began walking away from that incident and I don't remember anything after that," Mr Hudson said
Mr Hudson said he spent six hours in the Albury emergency department and told the court he had a seven-millimetre lump on his brain
"I had headaches and a bit of blurry vision for a few weeks after the incident," he said
Multiple people told the court they saw the blow from behind and said they heard the impact
"I heard the loud crack," witness Christoper Lockhart said during questioning
Josh Hudson said he had headaches and blurred vision after the incident
Albury trainer Eleanor Burnett said Mr Hudson was "unconscious almost immediately and fell to the ground"
She said she saw Mr Hudson "go floppy and instantaneously fell to the ground"
"I realised this was pretty serious and ran out to him," she said
"When I got there his eyes were still closed."
The game ended soon after and Ms Burnett said "Josh was still lying like he was when he first hit the ground."
Stuart Hodgson said he saw Smith's right arm up come up and strike the jaw or lower part of Mr Hudson's face
Christopher Lockhart and Stuart Hodgson gave evidence
"He dropped to the ground immediately," he said
He said he was 40 to 50 metres away and the contact was audible
"I could see the arm clearly come up," he said
Police prosecutor Nick McGrath said the assault "falls outside any scope of rules of the game"
Albury team manager Ross Ried described the strike as being "a fist to the head"
"I could hear the whack from where I was standing," he said
"I knew instantly Josh was unconscious before he hit the ground."
with Smith's shoulder connecting with Mr Hudson's jaw
He said he was right in front of the incident and was scuffling with Mr Hudson
He described the impact as "wrong time and wrong position"
Mr Cronin said there was no dispute about the identity of the two players involved and that Mr Hudson had been injured
Mark Cronin said there were conflicting statements about the incident
He said the issue in the case was whether Smith's actions fell within the consensual rules of the game and said there were questions about the mechanism that resulted in the injury
Mr Cronin said even if the North Albury player's actions were outside of the rules of the game
that did not necessarily mean they were criminal
The prosecution said there had been significant force to Mr Hudson's head or neck involving a fist or elbow
which could not be consented to as part of the game
Mr Cronin said Mr Smith had been honest and frank when questioned by police
"Courts are rarely called upon to deal with events that happen on the sporting field."
He said his client had only arrived at the scuffle to help his teammate
and the contact was "unfortunate and unintentional"
Magistrate Sally McLaughlin wanted to think about the case and what was expected in an Australian Rules game

North will again be a story worth following
AFL North East Border brought in its new player points format for this year
a handful of factors contributed to the allocation of points
such as performances over an extended period of time
given their battles to be competitive for almost a decade
but suffered the greatest drop in falling to 39 after finishing third
Given they have only just climbed the mountain again there will be enormous interest in whether they remain a force
the drop in points will be largely forgotten but
expect other clubs with a similar trajectory to use that as an example of why the new PPS system is flawed

what impact will gun recruit Ben Rigoni have in taking the 'heat' off the coach
The Hoppers' mentor was restricted to a season-low 12 disposals by Wangaratta tagger Mark Anderson in that first semi
Anderson simply refused to allow Broomhead any space
Fellow midfielders George Godde and Jack Penny are fine players
so clubs will not be able to focus solely on Broomhead's creativity
And Rigoni can also move forward and kick goals
so it is another area opponents will need to focus on
What impact will the three recruits from Collingullie-Wagga have
If you judge it by the impact of the club's three Riverina recruits two years ago
Cayden Winter was named in the league's Team of the Year last year
Jack Reynolds is as energetic as anyone in the comp and Nathan Dennis kicks clutch goals
They were all good players in either the Riverina or Farrer leagues and the same applies to Kane Flack
who are RFL premiership players at Collingullie-Wagga
Q: How will you take the 'heat' off Tim Broomhead
A: I think with our whole midfield we've got a lot of depth
so they'll have to worry about more than just Tim
A lot of the blokes running through there are high quality
but I'll run through the 'guts' and it's looking likely I'll have a rest down forward
Everyone will have a different role as the game plays out
who's running hot and who from the opposition is running hot
but Tim will let everyone play to their strengths
Q: You played 18 games for Coburg in the VFL over the past two seasons
what was the one major aspect you improved
I played in the backline there for a while so you're able to see the whole ground and the game unfold a bit better
Q: You played for the Goulburn Valley against the O and M in Albury in 2023
would you like to now play for the O and M against the GV
A: I'd definitely put my hand up and would love to play if I was lucky enough to get picked
It would be good fun to play some of the Seymour boys

both she and the victim - who is subject to a similar order protecting Boothey - seem unwilling to abide by the rules
pleaded guilty to two charges of contravention of an apprehended violence order
laid over incidents from late December and mid-February
When a complaint was made to police about the first breach
they arrived at her home to find her about to leave as she said she was going into labour with her third child
She showed police her pregnancy planner that detailed how she had gone to Albury hospital just two days earlier when she also underwent contractions
Boothey had asked after her ex-partner out of concern for him
and because she wanted to express both her love and that of their children
The second incident involved Boothey's mother going to the front door of a house in Fallon Street
The man's sister answered the door and the women immediately began to argue
Boothey got out of a parked car and ran over to try to defuse the situation
Boothey breached an order for her protection by going within three metres of the sister
MORE COURT STORIES
Boothey contacted police by phone on February 22 about 7pm
telling them she was at an address in Wantigong Street
Police went there and placed her under arrest
"The accused said she was there to drop off [her] ex-partner's property with her mother
father and grandmother," they told the court
Boothey became "concerned they would get in a physical fight so she ran over to the house and stood on the driveway [or] footpath to pull [her mother] away from the [sister]"
The first incident began with a Facebook message Boothey sent to a woman on December 28 just after 4pm
"Have you heard from [the ex-partner]?" she asked
"I haven't heard from him since 9am yesterday."
The woman in turn contacted her sister-in-law to tell her of the message
She didn't reply and she also blocked Boothey's profile
Boothey then sent this second woman a message two days later just after 12.30pm
asking if she could pass on their love and to say they were missing him
" I obviously understand if you don't reply or tell me to get f---ed though," she wrote
who - after visiting her and taking photographs of the messages - went to the offender's home to place her under arrest
That was when Boothey told them she was going into labour and was about to head to hospital

this is probably the best collective since I've been here with a lot of ex-players still staying around and helping out," he said
"Dave and I spoke a lot and I have been at the club a long time
"I came out (from England) to play in 2016 in a gap year and never got home
lovely son and friends for life (he said before becoming emotional)."

Ramage played only one senior and 37 reserves games for the powerful Pies
He joined the Hoppers in 2022 and has played 55 matches
but made the startling comment last year that despite the brutal start
"He'll play any role that the team ever needs
he's tough as nails which is something you can't teach," Broomhead praised
"He's more courageous than probably anyone else on our list and always puts the team and others first."
Ramage was involved in one of the biggest collisions in the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League last year
He crashed into Wangaratta's Jessie Smith as both players displayed tremendous courage in trying to mark the ball

The 30-year-old also finished equal third in the Morris medal behind Willie Wheeler and Isaac Muller
He proved to be a ball magnet for the Hoppers in the midfield and across half-back to collect the fourth most disposals in the competition behind Sam Murray
Broomhead was heavily tagged most weeks as opposition club's tried to curb his brilliance
felt more than half-a-dozen Hoppers could have easily taken out the club's highest individual honour
"It's a proud achievement to get my name on that honour board and join some of the club's biggest names that have been able to do it previously," Broomhead said
"But like I said in my speech on the night
there could have been more than half-a-dozen of the boys that would have been worthy winners because we had such an even contribution
"That's a huge positive for the club more than anything."
Winter finished with the third most disposals in the competition after his outstanding season for the Hoppers. Picture by James WiltshireBroomhead was full of praise for Winter and Penny who both thrived this season as the Hoppers won two elimination finals to reach the preliminary final.
"Both Cayden and Jack took their games to another level this season," he said
"It was the best year JP (Penny) has had of his career after he transitioned into the midfield and it was a move that suited him well
"He grabbed his opportunity with both hands
"Wiz (Winter) was able to get his body right this year which translated to being more consistent and the impact that he has had at the club has been profound."

his dealings that followed led to the crime that was ultimately committed
Alexander Kapera Sanderson had the money go into his personal bank accounts set up behind the company names of "B2 Gold Mining" and "Carrington Asset Pty Ltd"
Albury Local Court was told this week that the victim's money - his transfers totalled $147,065 - ultimately ended up being transferred into other unknown accounts
of the Cairns coastal suburb of Kewarra Beach
admitted to his involvement in the ruse on appearing via a video link to jail
That came after defence lawyer Angus Lingham entered a plea of guilty on his behalf to a charge of recklessly deal with the proceeds of crime
"It appears a SAR [sentence assessment report] may assist given the amount [of money] involved
not withstanding my client does not have a criminal record," Mr Lingham told magistrate Christopher Longley
Director of Public Prosecutions representative Kayla Borchert said the plea on that charge meant the case would remain in the Local Court for sentencing
In a DPP outline of the case on which Sanderson made his plea
the court was told it was 2022 when the victim began looking to invest his savings in the stock market
he sought out the assistance of a company working in that field
The man found one such business and so made contact with the hope of it being able to handle his investments
The court heard the man then received a phone call from a man identifying himself as "David Hastings"
who discussed with him the possibility of investing in the company "B2 Gold"
The victim then received a message on WhatsApp from a "Jack Marsden"
who helped the man set up his online portal in order to track his investment
BSB and account number for "Judo Asset Management"
the victim transferred $36,505 into this account
then four days later it was another $37,215
that the payments were for the balance of 20,000 shares in B2 Gold Mining
so was sent the details for another bank account in the name of Carrington Asset Pty Ltd
he transferred $40,000 into the Carrington account
followed the next day by an additional $33,345 transfer
the victim contacted police as he believed he had been the victim of fraud
A police investigation identified Judo and B2 Gold as being registered with ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) and that Sanderson owned the companies
The Judo account was actually a St George Bank account held by Sanderson
to which he also had attached an everyday account in his name
containing his personal details as the contact
The police investigation identified Sanderson as having transferred the victim's money into multiple bank accounts
using the authorised deposit-taking company Cuscal
"While this was happening," the court heard
"the offender was using the St George account for cash withdrawals and general everyday payments."
Several of the transactions took place in the Cairns area in Queensland and others in Sydney
"In the period of the victim depositing funds into [his] bank accounts
[Sanderson] transferred over $150,000 out of his accounts."

The captain of the Hoppers' premiership hat-trick from 2004-05
2006-07 died suddenly on Sunday ahead of what was to be a coaching return to Bunton Park this season
rivals and cricket-lovers from all parts have paid tribute to the man they called "Abbott" or
In almost two decades with the Hoppers, Castello won five premierships and also captained CAW and the Riverina before moving to Perth in 2012
He returned to the Border region last year and immediately reconnected with the game of cricket
before he was announced as Hoppers coach in April
Castello enjoys a beer after a grand final victory
File pictureNorth Albury secretary Darren Harris said Castello had made an immediate impact on his return to Bunton Park and would be greatly missed
"We were so excited to get him back and even in the space of a few short months
he had already done some tremendous work with our juniors
they were just so open to the way 'Abbsy' taught
"He was a cracking bloke and we will miss him dearly
Harris said there was a strong chance the Hoppers would not replace Castello for the upcoming season
meaning he will remain the spiritual coach of the club for 2024-25
"We are lucky as a club to have a lot of strong personalities and if six or seven or eight blokes can do a bit each
Castello was a dashing left-hand batsman who many a match for the Hoppers. File pictureOne of Castello's closest friends, another North Albury legend in Rod Barton
paid tribute to someone who "loved cricket
loved the club and just bled green and gold"
Barton was one of the most highly respected captains in the competition during his time at the Hoppers before handing over the reins to Castello
"He single-handedly won a lot of games for North Albury," Barton said
"I'll have to admit he won a few games with the ball too
"He probably only took up bowling seriously in the second half of his career
so I gave him a bowl and Steve Wood kept hitting him into the Tallangatta swimming pool
"Woody made 190 and I said 'I'm never bowling you again'
he turned himself into a great all-rounder."
Castello when he was announced as North Albury coach earlier this year
who spent 29 years as a player at North Albury
recalled the first time Castello turned up to training in the early 1990s at Bunton Park's nets
Williams said no one could have predicted that "this skinny little kid with P-plates and a South Australian car"
would go on to become a legend of the club
"He started off in second grade and I can distinctly remember a game where everything just clicked
went up to A grade and then we never saw him again," Williams
who is now Cricket Albury-Wodonga treasurer
Williams said Castello was someone who loved to reminisce
with a framed collection of pictures from the Hoppers' premiership hat-trick his "pride and joy"
"He could bowl all day long and he could tell you the thought process behind every delivery too
how he was going to get them out," he said

"I was fortunate to play a lot of representative cricket with him as well as those games against him - it was always game on when we played North Albury
"You'd think you were going OK and had them five or six down
and then Castello would come in and slap you around everywhere
Naughton said Castello immediately had the respect of the players as an umpire as well
"He knew the game as well as anyone and if someone complained about an LBW

everyone is trying to get better and do the best for the team."
78kg Gardiner impressed with his composure and courage against the Bulldogs

North added classy Murray Bushrangers' Josh Murphy and Cody Gardiner to an extended bench
However, Wangaratta did not name Bushies' team-mate and All-Australian Joe Berry.
Coach Ben Reid promised changes after last week's 44-point qualifying final loss to Wangaratta Rovers.
Xavier Laverty and Fraser Ellis have been dropped
while Hunter Gottschling has not been named after he was injured in a heavy collision with Rovers' Sam Murray in the final quarter
Murray accepted a one-week ban for rough conduct (high bump)
Jessie Smith is also out after he left the ground clutching his head in the second term
The league's best player Callum Moore returns from seven weeks out with a hamstring complaint
Josh Tweedale and Fraser Holland-Dean have been recalled
A handful of other players are lucky to have retained their spots
so they will owe Reid and the club a committed showing
declaring he will select players who "compete" and admitting the team was out-enthused for not the first time this year
The Pies have been a premiership force since 2017 and it would be bitterly disappointing in Reid's last season if they bowed out in straight sets
North has been magnificent and held its nerve superbly to hold out Wodonga in a frenetic finish to last Sunday's elimination final
The Hoppers will be expecting an onslaught from the Pies
which should make for a physical and entertaining clash
the home team trailed by 22 points with only 13 minutes left
The 2021 Morris medallist had moved into the ruck and changed the game as the Pies stole a three-point thriller
Yarrawonga has recalled former AFL player Dan Howe and classy schoolboy Ben Kennedy for Saturday's grand final qualifier against Wangaratta Rovers
But the Pigeons are still well short of full strength with captain Leigh Masters (knee) out for the season
while forward Nick Fothergill (hamstring) and running defender Ryan Einsporn (dislocated
broken wrist) are racing the clock to play again over the final fortnight
Murray is not only a leading contender for the league's Morris Medal
but so too were fellow playmakers Brodie Filo and Lochie O'Brien
so the Hawks have the experience in critical positions to match the Pigeons
Wangaratta's Norm Minns Oval will host the game
He only returned to the sport last May after an outstanding junior swimming career
"We don't win the grand final without him," Collingullie-Wagga coach Shane Lenon exclaimed
"He's still pretty raw and got a lot to learn
so to do what he did for us was outstanding
"Obviously GWS can see how much talent he's got and they would have had an eye on him when he was younger as well

File picture A North Albury footballer has been found guilty of assault in a rare case of an on-field hit going to court
The April 25 incident led to Hudson being hospitalised for six hours and Smith being questioned by police and charged.
Witnesses described a "sickening crack" that instantly knocked Hudson out.
Police prosecutor Nick McGrath had argued in Albury Local Court that the incident fell outside the scope of the game
but lawyer Mark Cronin argued the contact was unintentional
Josh Hudson was hospitalised for six hours after being knocked out
File picture Magistrate Sally McLaughlin heard from multiple witnesses and ultimately decided on Friday
that Smith was guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm
But the North Albury player won't face any further legal penalty
He must be of good behaviour for the next three months as part of a conditional release order
Smith received a 10-game ban at the Ovens and Murray Football League tribunal in May
Lawyer Mark Cronin argued the impact wasn't intentional
File picture The hit had been graded as intentional
and had prevented Smith from playing until August
Mr Cronin noted in court it was rare for legal action to be taken for on-field incidents
The Wodonga Magistrates Court has previously dealt with a similar incident
Upper Murray league player Ashley John Tyrell was charged after hitting Kevin Wallace during the 2018 grand final
Mr Cronin also represented Tyrell in court, with magistrate Ian Watkins noting at the time the assault went well beyond rough play.
Tyrell also avoided conviction and was ordered to pay $2000 to a charity
