A man was rescued after being washed into the water from rocks at North Narrabeen
NSW Ambulance and Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) responded to a report of a man in the water around 50m from shore near North Narrabeen rock pool
The call came in before surf patrols had started for the day
and the North Narrabeen emergency call-out team was activated
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were first on scene
spotting a man in his 40s who had been washed off the rocks floating a short distance from the shore
The man was able to stay afloat but was apparently reluctant to attempt to swim back in to them with waves crashing against the rocks
Police were joined just after 8.15am by two NSW Ambulance crews
including NSW Ambulance Inspector Christian Holmes
and an Intensive Care ambulance from Narrabeen Ambulance Station
The Toll NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was tasked from Bankstown
The first SLSNSW teams also arrived just after 8.15am
and others to the North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club where they launched an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) just before 8.30am
Local surfers had managed to get a rescue floatation device to the man
who was becoming tired from treading water in the swell
The IRB crew arrived and pulled the exhausted man from the water
just as the rescue helicopter arrived overhead
Once lifesavers took the man safely back to the beach in the IRB
The man was taken in an all-terrain vehicle to the car park near Birdwood Park at Ocean Street
Paramedics assessed the man’s condition
Although he appeared otherwise unharmed from the ordeal
he was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for further observation and assessment just after 9.00am

Everyone is invited to celebrate Australia’s biggest community tree planting initiative at a special event at North Narrabeen on Sunday 28 July.
Planting will help stabilise the newly reshaped Birdwood Park dune and reduce the amount of sand blown into Narrabeen Lagoon entrance
It will also provide important habitat for our native fauna.
The community can drop by North Narrabeen between 10am - 2pm to help revegetate the dunes with native plants
The works will support our Narrabeen Lagoon Strategy
with an estimated 5,000 native plants to be planted on the day
with native plants caringly propagated by our volunteer community nurseries being delivered to 22 local schools
Students from North Narrabeen Sports High are also providing a helping hand at the dunes as part of Schools Tree Day during the week.
a teacher at Narrabeen Sports High School said:
I love working outside with my students and reconnecting with nature
I have seen first-hand the benefits to student wellbeing
students are empowered when they go home and educate their families and integrate sustainable practices in their home lives.”
The fencing and planting is jointly funded by Council and the NSW Government through its Coastal and Estuary Grants Program

A witness said Carroll appeared to be seriously hurt with a large cut on his head
“He walked out of the water and seemed pretty rocked,” the witness told The Daily Telegraph
than he fell off his board and copped a fair gash
“He was a bit rattled when lifesavers first approached him

“It’s all a bit of a blur but I must have hit something,” he told News Corp.
“The impact itself scorpions me over my board which created a really bad electrical sound which concerned me.
“I’m going to look into my neck and spine ... because I’m not quite sure if everything is OK.”

Dee Why and South Curl Curl remain closed but seven others reopen after marble-sized debris washed up at multiple locations
Sydney’s Northern Beaches council says it has reopened seven of the nine beaches that were closed to the public after marble-sized “grease balls” washed ashore
Queenscliff, Freshwater, North Curl Curl, North Steyne and North Narrabeen beaches reopened on Wednesday morning, the day after they were closed after the discovery of the debris
Dee Why and South Curl Curl beaches remained closed
The council said the composition and source of the balls had not been determined but it had sent debris samples for testing
A spokesperson for Sydney Water on Tuesday described the debris as “grease balls”
congratulated the council’s clean-up crews for getting the beaches ready to reopen quickly
“We will continue to monitor the beaches’ condition
especially following the high tide this morning,” she said
The council said the decision to reopen the beaches was made on criteria provided by the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA)
Sydney Water on Tuesday said there had been no issues with the normal operations of the Warriewood
Malabar and Cronulla water resource recovery plants
“We comply with our licences as set by the NSW EPA and only discharge compliant wastewater during normal operations,” the spokesperson said
They said they were working with the EPA to investigate where the balls came from
Thousands of pieces of spherical debris washed up on many eastern suburbs beaches including Coogee and Bronte in October last year
Those balls were initially widely reported to be “tar balls” comprising crude oil until testing coordinated with the EPA revealed they were consistent with human-generated waste – or “likely lumps of fatberg”
0:36Coogee beach suspected oil slick: beachgoers warned after black balls wash ashore – videoMore ball-shaped debris washed up in Kiama in November, before green, grey and black balls washed up on Silver beach in Kurnell in Sydney’s south in early December
The EPA on Tuesday said the balls that washed up on Sydney’s eastern suburbs beaches in October were found to consist mostly of fatty acids and petroleum hydrocarbons
But the regulator said testing could not “pinpoint a source” or identify what caused them to form
because “there was no source sample available for comparison”
The EPA said analysis of the balls that washed up in Kiama found they had a similar composition to those that washed up on the eastern beaches and it was “still awaiting” the final results of the Kurnell debris
It said the balls found on the northern beaches this week had a similar appearance to those found in the eastern beaches

An alleged drink driver has been involved in a head-on collision at the Wakehurst Parkway
NSW Ambulance and NSW Rural Fire Service crews from Davidson and Beacon Hill responded to a report of a two-car head-on collision at the Wakehurst Parkway
Emergency services were told that a dark-blue 2002 Audi A4 Quattro (main image) travelling southbound at high speed had allegedly ignored traffic controllers. They were managing Stop/Go signals for night works at the Wakehurst Parkway as part of the flood mitigation project for Northern Beaches Council
The Audi was reportedly seen to swerve across the road into oncoming traffic
colliding at high speed with a white 2022 Toyota Corolla (image above)
The force of the impact spun the two vehicles around on the road
causing significant front-end damage to both cars
multiple calls were made to Triple Zero (000) from witnesses as traffic control workers rushed to help the drivers of the vehicles
A 31-year-old woman was assisted from the Toyota Corolla
and a 28-year-old man was assisted from the Audi
There were no other occupants in the vehicles
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were first to arrive
closing the Wakehurst Parkway and checking on the drivers of the vehicles
It is understood the male driver was behaving erratically when assisted from the vehicle
Five NSW Ambulance crews responded to the scene
including a NSW Ambulance Inspector and three NSW Ambulance Intensive Care vehicles
one of which had been returning to Narrabeen Ambulance Station from Northern Beaches Hospital when they came across the incident
The female driver was in a significantly more modern vehicle
which had absorbed the force of the impact and protected her to a greater degree than the male driver of the older Audi
She was assessed and treated at the scene by paramedics for minor injuries
and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition
The 28-year-old man was observed exhibiting strange behaviour according to witnesses and was assessed by paramedics for more severe injuries as a result of the collision
They treated him for possible internal injuries
and he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition
The crash scene was preserved and the road remained closed while NSW Police conducted inquiries
the man allegedly admitted to police that he had been drinking
The man will be subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing in hospital
It is also believed police will look into the man’s mental state at the time of the collision and he will be required to undergo a mental health assessment
Both vehicles were towed shortly before midnight and the road was reopened just after 12.15am this morning (Wednesday
As inquiries continue, NSW Police urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

The youths left the area prior to police arrival
but were seen to take the path through the caravan park from Ocean Street to Lake Park Road

Grey ball-shaped debris found washed up along shore will be tested by Environment Protection Authority
Nine of Sydney’s northern beaches have been closed after ball-shaped debris washed ashore.
The Northern Beaches council on Tuesday advised beachgoers to avoid Manly, Dee Why, Long Reef, Queenscliff, Freshwater, North and South Curl Curl, North Steyne and North Narrabeen beaches until further notice.
Read moreIn a post on Facebook, the council said it was working with the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to clean up the balls and send them for testing after the regulator alerted it to the debris
Most of the samples identified were marble-sized
A spokesperson for Sydney Water described the debris as “grease balls”
They said they were working with the EPA to investigate the cause
The spokesperson said: “Sydney Water can confirm there have been no issues with the normal operations of the Warriewood
and Cronulla Water Resource Recovery plants”
“We comply with our licences as set by the NSW EPA and only discharge compliant wastewater during normal operations,” they said
“We don’t know at the moment what it is and that makes it even more concerning,” she said on Tuesday
“There’s something that’s obviously leaking or dropping or whatever and floating out there and being tossed around
But who’s actually dropped it or lost it or leaked it is something none of us know.”
The discovery of the balls on the northern beaches comes after thousands of pieces of spherical debris washed up on several eastern suburbs beaches including Bondi
Guardian Australia reported the EPA had allegedly known for more than a week that the balls were consistent with human-generated waste before it made the information public as the US election results dominated headlines
Free daily newsletterOur Australian morning briefing breaks down the key stories of the day
telling you what’s happening and why it matters
the EPA coordinated the release of a statement that revealed those balls comprised fatty acids
petroleum hydrocarbons and other organic and inorganic materials – including traces of drugs
A Sydney Water spokesperson said “there have been no issues with the normal operations of the Bondi or Malabar wastewater treatment plants”
“Sydney Water acknowledges the tar balls may have absorbed wastewater discharge
which was already present in the water while forming
they did not form as a result of our wastewater discharges,” it said at the time
In early December, green, grey and black balls washed up on a beach in Kurnell
The EPA said at the time its officers had collected samples for analysis which would be tested and compared to the other debris found on the eastern beaches
The regulator has not provided a public update on that testing
said on Tuesday: “Sydney Water has admitted that the human waste on beaches in Sydney’s east last year may have absorbed wastewater discharges indicating that our current treatment systems are not fit for purpose and the question remains – how much waste products are discharged by Sydney Water as part of their ‘normal operations’?”
The Greens said in December that the EPA didn’t appear “any closer” to discovering the source of the debris washing up on Sydney’s beaches
“The EPA can’t explain the source of the human waste causing the fatbergs and it can’t assure the public that Sydney’s beaches are safe to use,” Higginson said in late 2024
Fatbergs form in sewers from material that does not dissolve in water – including oil and grease – piling up and sticking together
The EPA was contacted for comment on Tuesday

The future of Narrabeen RSL has been decided
with the Club set to be sold to developers for over $15m
uncertainty has surrounded the future of the Narrabeen RSL Memorial and Recreational Club
Questions now appear to be answered with the Club formally placed on the real estate market through commercial property agents Savills Australia
the operation of many RSL Clubs has been separated from the affiliated RSL sub-Branches
The Narrabeen RSL Club premises remained in the ownership of the Narrabeen RSL sub-Branch
Narrabeen RSL Memorial and Recreational Club Ltd is located at the end of Nareen Parade
a considerable distance from any main road
and is understood to have experienced difficult trading conditions for some time
Efforts of the RSL Club to generate increased patronage through live music ran into noise complaints from nearby neighbours
and the Club never recovered from the impact of COVID
It was placed into voluntary administration in February 2022 and did not reopen
The RSL Club sits on a 1.884ha (hectare) plot of land
which currently hosts the three-storey club building
as well as a paved car park with 39 car spaces currently being used for bus parking
and three lawn bowling greens that are falling into disrepair
Although the land is currently zoned C4 (Environmental Living)
it seems likely any purchaser will seek to use the existing building height and cleared areas to set the precedent for any proposed redevelopment
Savills Australia and New Zealand State Director Tim Grosmann said the site offered a substantial footprint for various redevelopment opportunities
“Sites on the Northern Beaches are rare
but a 1.88-hectare property is unprecedented
Developers can capitalise on this opportunity with a wide range of potential options for the site
“The property’s significant size and prime location overall could make it ideal for residential subdivision
catering to the growing housing demand in North Narrabeen and capitalising on rising property values and affluent demographics,” said Mr Grosmann
it presents unique opportunities for a boutique B&B [Bed and Breakfast]
the site is perfect for developing senior housing
addressing the limited availability in North Narrabeen and meeting the needs of the ageing population
making it a profitable and socially beneficial investment,” said Mr Grosmann
Savills Australia and New Zealand National Director Nick Lower said the ‘iconic’ site offered significant potential
“This iconic site offers an extraordinary blend of historical significance and future potential
It’s a unique opportunity for investors to leverage the property’s prime location to create something truly special for the North Narrabeen community,” said Mr Lower
Narrabeen RSL Memorial and Recreation Club at 116 Nareen Parade
has dual street frontage to Nareen Parade and Eungai Place
Expressions Of Interest (EOI) for the property close at 4.00pm Thursday
and it is expected it will attract offers in excess of $15m
It is understood that funds raised from the sale of the RSL Club will be retained by the Narrabeen RSL sub-Branch
for ongoing veteran welfare and commemoration activities

A spokesperson for the Minister for Education said the early delivery of upgrades (more than six months ahead of schedule) of Narrabeen North Public School is part of the Minns Labor Government work to address the school infrastructure backlog left after 12 years of neglect by the Liberals and Nationals
They said works were funded by the Minns Labor Government’s record $8.9b 2024-25 Budget for new and upgraded schools
The statement of 12 years of neglect by the former government is a political claim
and was not made by Department of Education staff
It is true that a number of repair and refurbishment projects are outstanding
such as Narrabeen Sports High School and Davidson High School hall
It was appropriate and to be commended that the NSW Treasurer invited the Member for Pittwater given the former Member Rob Stokes
announced the upgrades to both Narrabeen North Public School and Narrabeen Sports High School

such as Northern Beaches Secondary College Balgowlah Boys Campus
have also been made under the current government

North Narrabeen is at the centre of a youth crime spree gripping the Northern Beaches
Local residents and businesses in North Narrabeen are dealing with a spate of criminal activities conducted by youths who are well-known to authorities
Police are finding themselves powerless as they arrest the teens
only to find them straight back out on the streets
Concerns have been mounting over increasingly antisocial and criminal behaviour from local teens
Recently a paramedic who was called to assist intoxicated teens at Cromer High School was assaulted
A student at North Narrabeen High reportedly requires a daily escort to and from school after being seriously assaulted by other teens
The teens have also become increasingly brazen in their criminal activities, with one recently arrested armed with a knife following a robbery attempt at Warriewood Square
has reportedly been dealing with the youths’ antisocial behaviour for some time
Some elderly residents have told the Northern Beaches Advocate they only shop at Warriewood Square before 3.00pm
A few local parents have expressed concern for the safety of their children who visit Warriewood Square after school due to the possibility of encountering unruly youths
The teens are reportedly using the bus service in an attempt to keep on the move and evade police, travelling between Warringah Mall, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Warriewood and even Mona Vale. Bus passengers have reported getting off as soon as the disorderly teens get on board ‘to avoid the drama’. Violence has also been reported at bus stops, with brawls breaking out
and youths have been accused of stealing e-bikes and running a ‘chop shop’
A report on social media indicated the group of teens had been terrorising the local neighbourhood in the early hours of Tuesday morning (09 July)
with one North Narrabeen resident confronted in his home after the teens had broken in around 2.15am
The teens then moved on to the bike shop at Powderworks Road (image above) and attempted to break-in
A NSW Police spokesperson confirmed they were apprehended by police who were already patrolling the area after reports of break-ins
police were called to a home at The Crescent
“Officers attached to the Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended the scene and were told two people had been seen inside the home
but left empty-handed before police arrived
police were called to a shop on Powderworks Road
Attending police found the front door of the shop had been smashed
“A 15-year-old boy was arrested nearby and taken to Manly Police Station
He has been charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter with intent company — not steal
“The boy faced a Children’s Court on Tuesday
where he was refused bail to appear before a Children’s Court on Tuesday
23 July 2024,” said the NSW Police spokesperson
Despite one of the youths being remanded in custody
disturbances were reported again yesterday (Wednesday
10 July) when police were called to a break-in at Rickard Road
Teens were seen running along Garden Street soon afterwards
Police are acting on incidents as they are reported
but privately some officers have expressed dismay at the ‘light touch’ the youths get when dealt with by the justice system
One of the teens involved in Tuesday’s break-ins was reportedly offered ‘rehab’ as an option instead of detention for a previous run in with the law
and walked out of counselling without completing it
A parent of a teen affiliated with the troublemakers said that although her son was not a ‘core member’ of the group
She said that having spent many nights driving the streets looking for her son
she despaired for some of the teens and wanted to help them
the group of now 15-16 year old boys who were considered the worst offenders had little to no parental supervision
She said their behavioural issues could at least partly be attributed to the impact of the COVID pandemic on their transition from primary school to high school
when they were kept away from school at a critical time
the antisocial and criminal behaviour of the group appears to be escalating
causing fear among residents and increasing costs and insurance premiums for local businesses who are already struggling with the impact of the economic downturn
If you witness any antisocial or criminal behaviour, please inform NSW Police by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
or Triple Zero (000) if it is an emergency

Former Aussie world surfing champion Tom Carroll has been treated in hospital after suffering a gash to the head while surfing in northern Sydney
Former world surfing champion from the 80s Tom Carroll has been treated at Northern Beaches Hospital after suffering a gash to the head while surfing in north Sydney
Mr Carroll reportedly suffered an injury on Wednesday morning at North Narrabeen Surf Lifesaving Club when paramedics were called to treat him just after 9am
He managed to gash his head open on either his surfboard or sandbank
The former pro surfer managed to walk himself out of the sea before lifeguards and paramedics took care of him on a stretcher
After assessing Mr Carroll at the beach he was taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for further treatment
Nurses cleared him of any spinal issues as he was treated for a large gash that spilt the top right of his forehead open
The 63-year-old said he was fearing the worst after falling off his surfboard
while now realising he will have to assess his condition for the rest of the week
He admitted he will take a break from the surf for the immediate future as he will be in "a lot of pain"
The goofy footed surfer said he was flipped head overboard causing sounds to ring in his head
"It's all a bit of a blur but I must have hit something," Carroll told The Daily Telegraph
"The impact itself scorpions me over my board which created a really bad electrical sound which concerned me
"I'm going to look into my neck and spine…because I'm not quite sure if everything is OK."
The freak accident comes just a day after the former world champion's 63rd birthday
the legendary surfer made the finals of the 1979 Pipe Masters on his first ever world tour in which he finished 24th.
He then climbed the ranks from 17th to 10th to 3rd before taking the world title in 1983
making him the first goofy footed world champion.
the legendary surfer secured a million-dollar contract with surf outfitters Quiksilver
he starred in Storm Surfers documentary where he hunted the world's biggest waves
He published a book in 2013 with his brother Nick Carroll titled "TC"
detailing the surfer's debilitating battle with drug addiction including the use of crystal meth which heavily impacted his marriage

2010) – The world's best junior surfers are descending upon the Sydney suburb of North Narrabeen to hunt down the most prestigious crown in junior surfing
as the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships prepare to run at the famed beachbreak from January 9 – 17
Contesting in their respective regional ASP Pro Junior Series throughout the 2009 season
qualifiers for the prestigious Billabong ASP World Junior Championships include 48 men and 18 women from the seven ASP regions: Africa
While the event has been held at North Narrabeen's famed peaks for over a decade now
the ASP Australasia region hasn't seen a men's champion since Joel Parkinson (AUS)
1 seed and qualifier onto the 2010 ASP Dream Tour
will look to cap off an incredible junior career with a big result at North Narrabeen
“Last year (in the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships)
a lot of things went the wrong way for me,” Wright said
“It will be tough since the field has a lot of the same faces from last year
Narrabeen is an awesome location; the Alley rights are so puntable and the lefts are long and sometimes barreling so I hope we get it pumping this year!”
ASP South America has been dominant at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
with Brazilians taking our four of the 10 men's titles in the event's history
2010 ASP Dream Tour rookie and last year's ASP World Junior Runner-Up
will lead the latest ASP South America squad into this season's event
“I think I put in a good performance last year
but during the final I didn't catch the best waves
Kai (Barger) was surfing very well during the event and deserved the victory,” Andre said
I know and believe all the guys competing at Narrabeen are strong and have a chance to win
so because of this I will give 100% attention in all the heats
I'm going to surf well and find the best results.”
ASP North America has not ventured as well in Narrabeen
the North Americans have yet to claim an ASP World Junior Title – a fact that Nat Young (Santa Cruz
hopes to rectify in his second appearance at the prestigious event
“The standard of competition in this contest is crazy
every first round heat could be a Final in a normal junior contest,” Young said
I would definitely like to do better this year
Last year was my first year in the contest and I made a couple heats so I was stoked
but this contest is so important to all the juniors because it is the biggest junior contest of the year
I think the other US guys are all great surfers and they have all had contests this year where they have shown that they are worthy of being in the World Juniors
I think this year could be a good year for the U.S.”
has graduated beyond the ASP Pro Junior Series
but remains enthusiastic about his fellow Hawaiians in Narrabeen
I think it would be sick to see Clay Marzo win
“If he surfs anything like he has been surfing at home then he's easily capable.”
Barger more than understands the importance of the event
and the effect a victory there can have on someone's career
“If there's one contest to do well in
then trust me this is the one to win,” Barger said
“This contest changed my life and sometimes I still can't believe I won there
There were a lot of nuts guys last year the surfing standard was so high
It seemed like everybody was pulling out their best.”
Mick Fanning (AUS)
recently crowned two-time ASP World Champion
knows a thing or two about winning and offered his own thoughts on the Billabong ASP World Juniors
“I never got one…it's a tough title to win,” Fanning said
“Back in the day it was really a battle between the Americans
there are contenders from each of the ASP regions and I think the list of recent past winners is a reflection of that.”
Despite the heavily-loaded field in this year's Billabong ASP World Junior Championships
Fanning's pick for the title stays close to home
“Owen (Wright) is World Champ material if you ask me,” Fanning said
“I've watched him evolve over the years and he'll be the man to beat at the World Juniors for sure
provided he's recovered from some heavy injuries suffered during the Portugal World Tour event.”
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships mirrors the competition format of the ASP World Tour and is considered the sport's “crystal ball” for aspiring champions
a Final's placing in the tournament affords the successful surfers an unrivalled seeding on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) that serves as a springboard to the ASP World Tour
The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships will be webcast LIVE via www.billabongpro.com

Sebastian ‘Seabass’ Zietz and Jed ‘Smivvy’ Smith relive the thrilling final of the World Cup Challenge tag team.
“To me, the highlight was the final: Kauai, Culburra, Snapper, and North Narrabeen. Parko, Owen, Hog… are you kidding me? The waves have been shit on the East Coast for the past six weeks, then suddenly we get a proper, building behind-the-rock swell for the final day of the tag team. That cone Parko snagged on the buzzer was fucking cosmic,” said Swellian co-host Jed Smith, summing up the ecstasy-fisted finale of the World Cup Challenge at Snapper on Sunday.

Now in its fifth year, this tag-team extravaganza was hosted at Snapper Rocks, where event permits seem easier to snag than a XXXX at Rainbow Bay Surf Club between all the recent Occy Grom Comp-ing, CS/CT, and WCC.
Seabass explained his first encounter with boardriders culture came at 18, after Brent Dorrington recruited him for Dbah’s newly formed boardriders club. “I ended up winning, and they chaired me up the beach and stuck a beer bong down my throat. They were super rowdy but the energy was infectious.”
Once Seabass was off tour, many of his students complained of the dwindling competitive opportunities given to Hawaiian juniors coming through the ranks. When long-time contest organizer Milo Murguia stepped down, Zietz and his wife stepped up, starting tag team contests in Kauai with support from Brandon Guilmette. They established a Hawaii Cup, a requirement to qualify for the US Champs, and continued running the Usher Cup format locally.
“There’s now seven boardriders clubs in Hawaii: North Shore Oahu, Haleiwa, West Side, Kauai, Maui, Big Island and Town.” Focused on fostering young talent, Zietz’s team now ranges in age from 15 to 24. He sees boardriders clubs as a way to create opportunities in a challenging industry, helping young surfers travel, compete, and build lifelong memories.

When the balls first began washing up on the shore late last year
it was assumed that they were standard-issue tar balls
which form when oil (generally from oil spills) meets tiny bits of debris on the surface of the water
The composition of the current batch of mystery balls is yet to be determined
but it’s likely that they could be pretty nasty – with the last batch found to contain PFAS chemicals
A sample of the most recent balls have been sent for testing
The Northern Beaches Council have been working overnight to clear the beaches of the potentially toxic balls
The clean-up team managed to clear a proportion of the debris overnight
with all beaches apart from South Curl Curl and Dee Why now open
As the council works to inspect Sydney’s coastline

Surfing caught fire in Australia in the early 60’s
While the California surf scene was being depicted in Hollywood movies
things really took off in Australia when big wave legend Greg Noll and his mates brought modern longboards down under in 1956
Nat Young and Phyllis O’Donnell had yet to make their mark internationally
surf exploration was taking place throughout Australia with many people on the road finding new surf spots
Evolution teaches us that many species developed via the conscious unconscious
where it was noted that monkeys on separate islands all began doing the same evolutionary thing around the same time.
This happened in 1964 when club surfing in Australia exploded
Fast forward 60 years and 2024 now marks a cause for celebration for a number of boardriders clubs including North Narrabeen
Last month North Narrabeen celebrated its 60th anniversary
The club has been led in the modern era by two time World Champ Damien Hardman
But their success goes back to several eras of dominance
There were always champions coming out of Narrabeen
Grant Dappa Oliver and a young Simon Anderson were coming through the ranks
Nowadays they are still very much a forced to be reckoned with and are always contenders in any national boardriders battles and events
Their talent pool include surfers such as Nathan Hedge
As well as a heartfelt honourable mention of the late Chris Davidson
Merewether celebrate their 60th at the Newcastle Town Hall last weekend
The club has a rich filled history that involves name like Robbie Wood
There’s always been world class surfers coming through the Merewether ranks
and like North Narrabeen and Snapper Rocks they’ve had been periods of dominance at the national club level
The club has also enjoyed recent success in the Kirra Junior Teams Challenge so the future augers well
Seaview Roaders was founded in ‘64 by a group of hodads that included Barry Young
It was originally a fraternity of fun but as South Australia surfing developed the Roaders developed a competitive strain and became the dominant club
Club reps also made their mark internationally
my old Kings Island buddy James Chappy Jennings surfed Marui Pro CT Final against Tom Curren in the 80’s
Kylie Webb held the World #1 ranking for a period and Josh Locke was #2 ranked junior in the World
Gary Howarth and Belinda Godfrey had prominent results and The Roaders BRC won many State Surf League and ABB Titles
Next month Snapper Rocks will celebrate their 60th anniversary
winning multiple National Surf League titles in the 90’s and the first two ABB Finals at Cronulla
On the world stage there have been multiple World Champions from Snapper
as well as ISA Champions including Shane Bevan
Dean Morrison and Sierra Kerr and Aerial maestro Josh Kerr
Sheldon Simkus has been a finalist at Challenger Series level
There is no way I could feature all the champions from each club in this relatively short article
I was having coffee in Bondi last weekend when I ran into my old mate Cheyne Horan
who along with Steve Jones was in town to celebrate Bronte Boardriders 60th that evening
a beach synonymous with the names Carter and Whittaker
There is also no mention of club governance
the presidents and office bearers who have diligently led by example
The backbone of these grassroots institutions are the committee members in support of the presidents
the volunteer parents who are there to pitch the tent on a Sunday morning
the volunteers who raise money for trophies and Sunday BBQ’s
60 years of unwavering commitment to surfing excellence
being the unofficial caretakers of their respective beaches
having fun days out enjoying the camaraderie of fierce Australian competitiveness.
Snapper Rocks and Bronte you have paved the way and shown how it’s done
but we’ve had so many shockers in this event over the years,” said Lovett
we decided to regroup and refocus on the things that drive us as a club and basically it was to simply have fun with this event while still giving it our all
The club is full of so many talented surfers and I think I speak for all members when I say that we’re over the moon to win this.”The Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle saw 13 boardriders clubs competing for the chance to qualify for the national final which will take place in 2022.Clubs that competed included North Narrabeen

A P-plate driver has been released from hospital after a collision with a bus
emergency services responded to a report of a collision between a silver 2005 Holden Astra hatchback and a bus at the intersection of Pittwater Road
The car was being driven by a red P-plate driver
and is understood to have been turning into Garden Street from the right turn lane
when it crossed the path of the northbound 199 bus from Manly to Palm Beach
The collision heavily damaged the passenger side of the Holden Astra
The bus is then believed to have mounted the curb and taken out a traffic signal near the Ampol Service Station at Garden Street
The damage from the traffic signal was visible on the front window of the bus near the passenger door
officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command and firefighters from Narrabeen Station closed Pittwater Road northbound at the intersection
and along Jacksons Road to rejoin Pittwater Road northbound
Firefighters assessed the damaged traffic light
and checked there was no live power passing through the exposed wiring
They also cleared debris from the road and neutralised oil and fluid spills from the car with absorbent material
The driver of the bus and his 15 passengers were not injured in the collision
The passengers disembarked the bus and perhaps a little shaken by the experience
The driver of the bus was assessed by paramedics but not taken to hospital
Airbags had deployed in the Holden Astra as a result of the impact
and the 18-year-old male P-plate driver was able to get out of the vehicle unassisted
Although the driver of the sedan did not initially appear to have sustained any serious injury
he was assessed at the scene by Intensive Care Paramedics and taken to Northern Beaches Hospital for further treatment
He remained in hospital overnight for observation before being released yesterday (Saturday
The cause of the collision remains unclear at this stage
and a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing
A string of Sydney beaches have been shut down after marble-sized grey balls washed up on the sand - just months after similar balls closed some of the city's most popular beaches
North Steyne and North Narrabeen beaches in the city's north were closed on Tuesday
'Council was alerted to the debris via the EPA and is working closely with the state agency to collect samples for testing,' Northern Beaches Council said
most samples identified are marble-sized with a few larger in size
'The Council is organising the safe removal of the matter and is inspecting other beaches.'
It comes after seven iconic beaches including Bondi, Coogee and Maroubra in the city's east were closed in October when dozens of black balls washed up
The incident sparked a massive clean-up by Randwick Council
which initially thought the balls were toxic 'tar balls' created by an oil spill or ship leakage
But scientists later revealed that their origins were far more disgusting
Researchers from the University of New South Wales said that the balls were actually a foul mixture of raw sewage
This suggested that the balls were chunks of a 'fatberg' typically found in city sewers
Questions around the origin of the debris remained - researchers were unsure if they came from local sewerage systems
they were certain the balls all came from the same place
A small number of the balls also washed up at Silver Beach in the city's south in December.
Anyone who notices the debris on other beaches in the city's north is encouraged to contact Northern Beaches Council on 1300 434 434.

17-year-old Laura Enever has reached a milestone of sorts in her young career as a professional surfer
When this down-to-earth Aussie native gets time away from photo shoots and traveling with the Roxy team
she trains at home with the likes of Barton Lynch and other male World Champions
Hurricane Laura is a worldwide phenomenon blowing through one prestigious contest after the next seizing titles such as the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championship
the 2009 Billabong World Pro Junior Championship
congregated the world’s best juniors in North Narrabeen to battle in decent 2- to 3-foot surf
Laura dominated every heat wearing a red rash guard and a smile
I had the opportunity to speak with her about the event
You made the semis two years ago and the quarters last year
Can you describe how it felt to make the finals for the first time
I’ve been surfing North Narrabeen since I was 8 with my dad
My friends made banners and they were all down there and everything
so happy…just to see everyone so happy for me made me even happier
this is your year!” It’s so good to have support and everyone behind me
It’s the best thing ever to be able to share it with everyone
I won it [the Championship] for North Narrabeen instead of me
How did the presence of family and friends impact your performance
I wanted to do really well in front of all my friends and family and in front of everyone
but after the first heat I was like “Yeeeeeaa
Everyone is going to love me no matter what
I want to have fun and show everyone how I can surf at home.” So I put myself in that frame of mind and had the best time the rest of the event…It was like freesurfing at my homebreak
What do you do to prepare for a heat to keep you focused
and do some cartwheels and jump around and stuff
but I usually listen to the exact same music and I wear the exact same bikini
I find that if I do the exact same thing it keeps me in the right frame of mind
In the quarterfinal heat, you were neck-and-neck with Felicity Palmateer. How did it feel to have such a close battle with a fellow Aussie after defeating Tyler Wright in the previous heat
It was a really close heat against Felicity
She got the last wave and then she fell on her last turn
I think she would have had the score if she didn’t fall
It was kind of a bummer that I met up with two Australian girls in the third and fourth round
It’s a bummer because I know those girls—hopefully next year we can get a couple more Aussies up in the finals
What is the next step in your surfing career
This season I want to keep getting better and stronger
I’m going to keep doing the junior events and do the WQS as well
I just want to keep experiencing everything
Most of your fans are young female surfers who dream of winning the title which you now hold
Do you have any advice for the competitive surfer
