SA trailed by a straight kick midway through the fourth quarter before spearhead Katelyn Rosenzweig outmarked WA’s Tiani Teakle and goaled to level the scores
Norwood forward Kiana Lee capitalised on a 25m penalty awarded to Jess Bates
before outmarking two opponents and converting truly to break the deadlock
Laela Ebert (16 disposals) won the medal for best SANFLW player
which found itself regularly under siege during the first three quarters
Despite Leah Cutting’s dominance in ruck
the WAFLW’s engine room – piloted by Lisa Steane and Krstel Petrevski – used slick hands to dominate at ground level early
Isabella Shannon got WA on the board first
before Lauren Breguet goaled twice – via a free kick
then a smart baulking effort after being set up by Central District team-mate Rosenzweig – to give SA a five-point quarter-time edge
The WAFLW dominated territory in the second term but a slew of missed shots kept the Croweaters in the hunt
Zoe Venning goaled against the grain to level the scores – 3.1 to 2.7 – before Fina Dethlefsen responded on the stroke of half-time to put WA in front
South Adelaide defender Tiffany King hobbled off after landing awkwardly on her right ankle in the third stanza
during which Lee’s early goal and further misses from the visitors meant WA’s lead was only one point at three-quarter-time
The WAFLW eventually paid for their waywardness as the SANFLW side controlled the final quarter – Lee and Soriah Moon dominating in the air
Bates finding her rhythm and the Rosenzweig-Breguet-Lee trio looking increasingly threatening in attack
Laela Ebert was awarded the best-on-ground medal for the SANFLW team after collecting 16 disposals
SANFLW forward Katelyn Rosenzweig bursts through a tackle
Adelaide’s SANFL side has returned to the winners list
defeating Norwood by 21 points at Centenary Oval in Port Lincoln on Sunday afternoon
Playing for the Teakle Cup – the annual SANFL match played in Port Lincoln – the Crows never trailed and were able to capitalise on a fast start to run out 14.5 (89) vs 8.20 (68) victors
Here are the five key takeaways from the match:
Adelaide was fast out of the blocks against Norwood
kicking seven goals to one in the opening term to take a 36 point advantage into the first break
the Crows made sure to get the momentum going their way
Adelaide was efficient when it had opportunities to score
converting seven of its eight scoring shots
a trend that continued as the game wore on
“We knew the conditions were going to be tricky
so we wanted to start well and put some runs on the board and we were able to go forward and knock a few goals in,” SANFL Senior Coach Matthew Wright said
I thought we executed when it went in there and got the scoreboard going our way.”
Forward Luke Pedlar played a big part in Adelaide’s first quarter dominance
Pedlar was damaging when the ball was in the Crows’ forward half
presenting strong to his teammates to take three marks inside 50
“His effort hasn’t waned for a long period of time
he was able to get the reward for all the other good things he has been doing,” Wright said
“For him to start the game so well today was awesome for the kid and he kept it up during the entire match.”
Wingman Chayce Jones played a crucial part in the Crows win
lining up wherever he was needed to best help the team
Jones played across half back and behind the ball
able to limit the effectiveness of the Redlegs forward ball movement
while being clinical with his ball use out of the back half
“I was really impressed with him and his ability to go behind the footy at times
play across half back and really impact in the second and fourth quarter when they had the breeze,” Wright said
“His ability to limit their scoreboard effect was really important for us
it went a long way to us getting the job done today.”
Onballer Harry Schoenberg made the most of his possessions against the Redlegs
Schoenberg led the game in clearances with nine and inside 50s with eight
Wright labelled him as “instrumental” to Adelaide holding the ball in its forward half
“He’s probably been our most consistent at setting the tone for the entire group
his leadership has grown so much,” he said
he is playing a really good brand of football and he was one today that I thought his ability to get out of stoppage and press the game contributed to us playing the match in our front half.”
Forward Chris Burgess continued to prove he is one of the SANFL’s most prolific goalkickers
booting four majors to sit second in the Ken Farmer Medal tally with 14 goals
Burgess showcased his ability to score in different ways
crumbing the ball up off the ground to snap in his first
along with roving off the pack to dribble through his third
“He’s one whose game hasn’t changed from preseason to in-season he was just able to execute today in front of goals,” Wright said
so his ability to play his role and bring others into the game has been super impressive.”
three marks – two contested – and three tackles
Adelaide’s SANFL side will next play Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon with the first bounce at 3:10pm
The game will be a curtain raiser to the AFL Showdown

A horror day in front of goal cost Norwood dearly in Sunday’s annual regional match in Port Lincoln
with Adelaide claiming its first Teakle Cup title by 21 points
In a day that was plagued by a strong wind blowing to the southern end
Adelaide made the most of its chances kicking 14.5-89
while the Redlegs had all sorts of problems
Elliston junior Jacob Newton was a shining light for Norwood
The win was set up by a seven-goal first term from the Crows
who won the toss and kicked with the strong breeze
following a 7.1-43 to 1.1-7 term it was now Norwood’s turn to kick with the wind at their back in the second term
After just two scoring shots to eight in the first term
Norwood came rocketing back into the contest in the second term with 13 scoring shots to Adelaide’s two
Norwood moved the ball well and got the ball in deep into attacking 50m
Tristan Binder was a prominent figure in Norwood’s forward line
but went into half time with three behinds to his name
taking on two Crows in the goalsquare before snapping truly
while Declan Hamilton also slotted a cracking goal deep in the pocket
This was lucky as the Redlegs let a lot of other opportunities go begging
Norwood was well and truly back in the game trailing by 20 points
but it was all about what they could restrict Adelaide to in the third quarter
while Finn Heard and Jacob Kennerley had 12 disposals apiece
who was Adelaide’s loose in defence in the second quarter had 15 first half disposals
It was one way traffic in the third quarter
quickly putting four goals on the board to restore the 40-point lead
their conversion was outstanding with 4.2 to no score in the opening 20 minutes
which ended up being the difference in the game
The Redlegs had one less scoring shot in the opening three quarters
Leading by 47 points late in the third term
Adelaide went into preservation mode as Norwood found repeated forward 50m entries
The Redlegs tried with all their might to get their attacking game going
but Adelaide parked the bus and defended gallantly
Norwood finally found their first goal of the third term
another ripper from Newton who helped his side to a three quarter time score of 5.11-41 to Adelaide’s 13.4-82
led clearances by three and tackles by three
But trailed by 41 points at the final break
which wasn’t great news for Norwood who had it at their backs in the final term
Port Lincoln local Binder gave Norwood a heartbeat with two massive goals to kick off the last quarter
making it three on the trot for the Redlegs
Luke Pedlar made sure there was no comeback
snapping his fourth goal five minutes later
Jackson Callow goaled from close range to bring the margin back to 25 points
Norwood kicked a further six consecutive behinds in a costly 3.9 quarter
while Binder finished with two goals from 16 disposals
Rokahr was once again Norwood’s leading disposal winner with 27 touches
Pierce Seymour had 19 disposals and 10 marks
Alastair Lord and Mitch O’Neill all had 17 touches
The Redlegs finished with +21 inside 50m entries
+4 clearances and 28 scoring shots to 19 in a frustrating day
Norwood is still winless from its first five matches of the 2025 season
The Redlegs travel to Noarlunga next Sunday to take on South Adelaide
Norwood played Woodville-West Torrens for the second time in three matches on Friday night
with the Eagles coming away with a 64-point victory at Woodville Oval
Scores were level half way through the second term
before the Eagles put their foot down to boot the last 10 goals of the match
Just two Eagles goals were scored in a tight first quarter
and the home side dominated the start of the second term
Norwood rallied late in the term with its first goal to Jack Aherne
finding three quick goals within six minutes through Oscar Hodge
From there it was all Woodville-West Torrens
as the Eagles managed 15 of the next 16 scoring shots – including 10 unanswered goals – to blow the game apart
George McLeod was again a ball magnet for the Redlegs with 30 disposals
three clearances and a cracking goal in a best on ground performance
Jake Cresswell and Hodge finished with 20 disposals apiece
The Redlegs take on South Adelaide next Sunday

The Norwood Football Club is heading back to its Regional Zone of the Eyre Peninsula for The Teakle Cup
this year taking on the Adelaide Crows on Sunday
The Redlegs have over the past three seasons played West Adelaide in the annual trip to Port Lincoln’s Centenary Oval
but this year we have a new opponent in the Crows
The annual Teakle Cup match is a huge weekend on the Norwood Football Club’s calendar
and it’s always a weekend that’s more than just the footy as we celebrate everything that the Eyre Peninsula has to offer
the club is hosting a Sportsman’s Lunch at The Port Lincoln Hotel
with none other than the legend that is Neil Balme
Neil Balme has a football resume that speaks for itself – he’s a VFL Premiership player
and had unprecedented success as a football administrator at AFL level
Make sure you book your tickets to Footy & Life – An Afternoon with Neil Balme on Friday
Tickets are on sale now via the link below
The club will again be hosting the VIP Welcome Evening on Saturday night
where we will officially be launching the 2025 Teakle Cup clash between the Redlegs and Crows
Hear from the captains and coaches before they go head to head on Centenary Oval the following day
You can book your tickets to this event below
The club will again have the Port Lincoln Match Day Marquee – a five-hour food and beverage package
Norwood Senior Coach Jade Sheedy has spoken about last Friday’s Anzac Day clash with Glenelg
identifying several key improvements in a stronger showing from his side
A final-quarter blowout saw the final margin sit at 43 points
but Norwood were right in the contest for much of the day and held a two-point lead late in the third term
Sheedy was pleased with a lot of what he saw across the first three quarters and noted plenty of positives in the way Norwood played
“It was a much better performance; a real Norwood game on the weekend,” Sheedy said
we had 21 shots on goal and 10 different goal scorers
They are all parts of our game we need to keep building on
and things we’ve been working on over a period of time.”
Sheedy said he was proud of his team’s resilience to stay in the game against strong opposition
“Really proud of the boys’ efforts on the weekend
I think there were three occasions where they (Glenelg) got out to a couple of goals and we clawed it back through each quarter to be able to neutralise the game.”
“We hit the front as well in the third quarter and had some chances to go beyond that
but they defended us well and we didn’t take the most of our opportunities when it counted as well.”
Sheedy identified that Norwood were caught out defensively while focusing on attack to try and reel in the deficit
“Up until the 16 minute mark we were still only two or three goals down and we probably chased the game a little bit
and we got opened up a little bit out the back and around stoppage and around Glenelg lengthening and us not being able to go with them.”
Sheedy also spoke about the change in Norwood’s method of ball movement
noting a focus on more direct play against Glenelg compared to the previous match against Sturt
“Against Sturt we got whacked around the footy a bit and then tried to possess the footy to get our hands back on it and take the ball off them
where against Glenelg it was definitely more a direct focus and play the game in our front half.”
Sheedy was also impressed by the game of Finn Heard
who took most of the ruck duties in the absence of Marco D’Annunzio
We wanted ground presence and to be able to outnumber at ground level
and he’s a big body and he won the hitouts as well and gave our mids a reasonable look at it
Looking ahead to Sunday’s clash with the Adelaide Crows
Sheedy said Norwood’s work at the contest will be critical in determining the outcome
“It will be about getting the ball in our front half again and being strong around the contest
They have got a pretty solid ruckman who creates a few headaches for opposition through his height and his ability to give them the first look at the footy
so we have to be strong around the contest again.”
Norwood and the Crows will be playing for the annual Teakle Cup at Centenary Oval in Port Lincoln
which Sheedy said he is looking forward to
but it’s good to get away with the group and get to know them a little bit more
and Jacob Kennerley will play for Norwood in their home region on Sunday
Norwood heads to its Regional Zone of the Eyre Peninsula for The Teakle Cup this Sunday
taking on the Adelaide Crows at Port Lincoln’s Centenary Oval
It’s the fourth time Norwood has hosted a SANFL match in Port Lincoln
winning two of the three encounters so far against West Adelaide
but this year its the Crows making the trip for the first time
winning its first three matches against Westies
before going down to the Eagles in Round 4
Norwood has had a tough start to the SANFL season
winless from its first four matches against the Roosters
Despite the 43-point loss to Glenelg last week
signs were better for the Redlegs who led the game by two points in the final stages of the third quarter
before the Tigers kicked eight last quarter goals to run out 18.11-119 to 11.10-76 winners
Norwood has made three changes to the Round 5 side with injuries to Connor McLean (groin) and Tom McCallum (knee)
McCallum will face a large chunk of the season on the sidelines with a knee injury he sustained in Round 4
Isaac Saywell and Ethan Warburton have come into an extended 25-man squad for the Port Lincoln trip
Molan is coming off back to back best on ground performances in the Reserves
while Saunders also found some form in the Reserves last week with 20 disposals
Warburton has been impressive at Reserves level after overcoming a shoulder injury pre-season
Both the Crows and Redlegs players fly into Port Lincoln on Saturday and heading to Centenary Oval for Captains Runs that afternoon (Crows 2:45pm
The Round 5 game will start at 2pm on Sunday
Norwood’s Reserves side take on Woodville-West Torrens at Woodville Oval for the second time in four weeks
Three new faces will make their debut for the SANFLW State Team in its historic clash against the WAFLW at Adelaide Oval on Saturday afternoon
North Adelaide pair Aprille Crooks and Julia Clark
together with West Adelaide’s Ruby Ballard
have been selected in the final 22 to confront the WAFLW in a curtain-raiser to the Adelaide v Carlton AFL match
the SANFLW side will be looking to atone for its 27-point loss to the VFLW at Alberton as part of the Gather Round festivities on April 11
Crooks has been named at half-forward while Clark and Ballard
the younger sister of Crows AFLW player Abbie
form part of the six-player interchange rotation
Bates will again look to team up in the centre square with Christina Leuzzi
who was awarded the medal for best SANFLW player against the VFL after collecting a team-high 23 disposals while also laying 13 tackles to go with her eye-catching goal
North Adelaide’s Julia Clark training for the SANFLW State team at Stratarama Stadium
The Norwood FC office and Merch Shop will be closed on Friday
May 2 due to the club’s SANFL match in Port Lincoln this weekend
Norwood’s U18 and U16s hit the road in Round 3
heading to Port Pirie to take on North Adelaide
It is the second consecutive season that North and Norwood have met in the Roosters regional zone of Port Pirie
with last year’s match taking place in Round 1
It was an absolute thriller of an U18 match in Round 1 last season
The Redlegs head to Pirie hoping to make it three consecutive wins to start the 2025 season
while the Roosters are coming off a Round 2 win over South Adelaide
Norwood U18 coach Alex Newell said his side was looking forward to the road trip
it’s a good opportunity for the boys to bond both on the way up there and back,” he said
“We get an opportunity to see some new personnel this week with a handful of forced changes
the silver lining is we have a competitive squad and the players coming in are ready to go
“Certainly the ideal outcome would be to go 3-0
but we just want to keep finding consistency in our game and continue to grow”
Norwood host Sturt in a blockbuster Easter Thursday clash at Coopers Stadium
The Redlegs have battled with injury in the opening two rounds of the SANFL season
but welcome back more troops for tomorrow night’s match as Alastair Lord (wrist)
Isaac Saywell (hamstring) and Jacob Newton return to the League side
The highly talented Newton will make his League debut wearing the number 29 guernsey made famous by Norwood Hall of Famer Michael Taylor
Sturt have started the season with back to back wins over South Adelaide and Port Adelaide
claiming a 16.11-107 to 12.6-78 win over the Magpies in Round 2
Norwood was disappointing in Round 1 against North Adelaide
but played some great football in Round 2 before eventually going down to the Eagles by six points
Marco D’Aannunzio will play a second straight game as Norwood’s number one ruck as Luke Surman continues to recover from his ankle injury
The Redlegs are hoping to welcome back Mitch Nicholas (suspension)
Tom Donnelly (hip) and Ben Simpson (foot) over the next few weeks
Both sides are coming off a Gather Round Bye
Norwood has already improved its win tally from last year’s U16 season
with a strong 29-point win over Glenelg at Norwood Oval on Anzac Day
The Redlegs managed just two wins from the 2024 season
and after just five matches in 2025 they have three victories against North Adelaide
Norwood controlled proceedings for most of Friday’s 9.13-67 to 5.8-38 win
with a goal in the opening minute through Myles Carr
and a second through Ollie Easton six minutes later
Norwood could have been further ahead with five shots on goal in the opening seven minutes
but in what has been the story of their season thus far inaccurate kicking let them down
The Tigers fought back with two quick goals off the boot of Lucas Mounsey to make it a three-point game despite the Redlegs early dominance
Flynn Gray kicked a goal from his third shot of the first quarter to make it a 10-point quarter time lead
The start of the second term went goal for goal
before Norwood nailed three majors in five minutes to make it a 25-point game
Easton kicked his third goal just before half time and it was a handy 28-point buffer at the main break
but Norwood managed to extend its lead to 31 points
but Glenelg came with a rush in the final term
In a frustrating fourth quarter for both sides
while Norwood kicked three behinds in what turned out to be a goalless quarter
and a combined return of 0.8 between the Redlegs and Tigers
Easton finished with three goals from 27 disposals
Thomas Gribben was Norwood’s best with 24 disposals
Norwood’s U18s were outclassed by Glenelg at Norwood Oval on Friday
kicking the first five goals of the game to skip out to a 28-point lead within the first 21 minutes of the game
Norwood responded with two quick goals to Mitch Stevenson and Jim Kelly before quarter time to get the margin back to 16 points at the first break
The Redlegs continued the comeback mission in the second term
kicking four goals to three to get the game back to three points
Reed Francis-Nia Nia kicked a goal just before half time to make it a nine-point game
Stevenson’s third goal came three minutes into the second half
kicking six unanswered goals and a 37-point game early in the final term
Micah Kretschmer was Norwood’s best with 31 disposals
Charlie Best and Jim Kelly both finished with 26 disposals and a goal

training sessions and clinics at Norwood Oval
That’s what makes Gather Round what it is
Now Norwood turns its attention to an Easter Thursday blockbuster at Norwood Oval in just three days time
A lot was on the line when Norwood travelled to Stratarama Stadium to face Glenelg on Anzac Day
It was a rematch of last year’s Preliminary Final thriller
but in Round 6 2025 it was a very different preposition with both sides heading to the Bay with just one win between them… Norwood 1-4 and Glenelg 0-5 from two of last season’s top three sides
There wasn’t a Grand Final on the end of this match
but both sides were desperate to get their campaigns underway
and it was the Redlegs who prevailed 2.7-19 to 1.2-8 in a high pressure
low scoring battle in tough wintry conditions
The ball was tough to handle and skills were challenging to perfect
Former Redleg Kaitey Whittaker kicked the first goal of the game for her new Tigers side
as Norwood squandered its first three shots at goal
Whittaker’s goal put Glenelg four points ahead
before Amelia Rusden edged Norwood back in front through an accurate set shot just four minutes later
despite not putting the score on the board
and while this didn’t translate into scoreboard pressure
Norwood was able to hold the Tigers at bay
After Rusden’s goal nine minutes into the second term
the game was goalless until late in the last term when co-captain Sophie Armitstead went back and nailed the sealing goal that put the Redlegs 11 points in front
it was simply about getting the job done and finding that crucial second victory of the SANFLW campaign
Norwood was the better team in the engine room
winning hitouts 37-17 and clearances 29-15 and giving its forwards first look which has been a challenge in 2025 thus far
Jade Halfpenny led disposals for the Redlegs with 20
while also laying four tackles and finding four clearances
while Lana Schwerdt had 18 touches and five clearances
Sarah Branford was Norwood’s best with her role in defence
while Georgie Jaques backed up with another good performance with 13 disposals and 16 hitouts
Lottie Almond was among Norwood’s best performers in her League Debut
Norwood will have a week off due to the SANFLW state game on May 3
before taking on North Adelaide at Prospect Oval on Sunday
The Redlegs face the third placed Roosters
before the top of the table and undefeated Eagles and fourth-placed Centrals in a tricky three-week stretch

booting 5.4 of its own in the same timeframe
Binder’s goal helped Norwood to a two-point lead with one minute to go before three quarter time
but Lachie Hosie did what Glenelg was able to do all day and responded with a replying goal with the final kick of the term to help the Bays to a four-point
The rest was history as Glenelg booted eight final quarter goals to two
After being well-held in the first half (one goal from three disposals)
Hosie kicked seven in the second half to finish with eight majors
it was a much improved performance from the Redlegs who played with dare and enthusiasm
taking the game on and moving the ball with speed inside 50m (40 inside 50m entries to last week’s 32)
Nik Rokahr finished with 31 disposals and six clearances
while captain Jacob Kennerley led from the front with 29 disposals
Mitch O’Neill kicked two goals from his 24 disposals
while Connor Ling had his best game for his new side with 20 disposals and a goal
Jacob Newton kicked his first goal in League football
It was ominous signs early as Glenelg got off to the perfect start
booting a goal through Corey Lyons in the opening minute
Lyons had a say in the second goal at the eight-minute mark
and the Lyons brothers (Corey and Jarryd) had eight disposals between them
It was one-way traffic despite Norwood creating four inside 50m entries
but didn’t look like threatening the scoreboard and after 10 minutes it was 2.2-14 to no score
Second gamer Jacob Newton bobbed up and took a strong mark on the wing to serge Norwood forward
ending in a much needed crumbing goal to O’Neill
After a dominant first 10 minutes from the Tigers
Norwood settled into the contest and found a second goal through Billy Cootee
and a third to take the lead when Connor McLean toe-poked one through from the goal square
The Redlegs were getting destroyed at centre clearance
and again the Tigers went forward but weren’t putting it on the board as Norwood led 3.0-18 to 2.3-15
Norwood would have been thrilled to go into quarter time leading by three points given the Tigers dominance in most facets of the match
but as the reigning premiers can do they hammered home three goals in five minutes to turn the three-point deficit into a 15-point buffer
It was 5.3-33 to 3.0-18 at the first break
which reflected on the stats sheet as Glenelg led marks 16-8
Norwood was a different side in the second term
turning the clearance battle around (11-3) and finding repeated inside 50m entries
but from there the visitors squandered five chances to further chip into the deficit
The Redlegs needed to make the most of every chance
but after 20 minutes they had 1.5 to Glenelg’s 1.0 and the margin was 12 points
nailing an important goal to get his side back to six points
and then Newton converted a close-range set shot to level the scores
At half time it was Glenleg leading by a point
6.6-42 to 6.5-41 after a three-goal-to-one term
which had the potential to be far more dominant from a Norwood perspective
and at the half O’Neill and Rokahr had 16 disposals and four clearances apiece
as Norwood desperately tried to edge its way in front
Jack Heard and Josh Gillow had done outstanding jobs on Luke Reynolds and Lachie Hosie in the first half
but the Glenelg pair kicked all four of the Tigers goals in the third quarter
The Redlegs transitioned the ball well from end to end
but couldn’t finish their hard work behind the football
kicking 2.4 to Glenleg’s 3.1 in the third quarter
Binder’s goal took the lead with Norwood’s the goal of the day
as Matt Ling burnt off a Glenelg defender and handed to Binder who nailed a running major from 50m
Again it was centre clearance that killed Norwood
as Hosie converted a fourth goal from his sixth disposal with the final kick of the third term
At the final break it was Glenelg maintaining a slender lead
Hosie’s fifth had Norwood hanging by a thread
and while it was just 11 points the game momentum had changed
Norwood lost Tom McCallum to a leg injury in the final term
and minutes later Will Chandler nailed another decisive goal to put the Tiger up 12.9-81 to 9.9-63
Finn Heard had a set shot to bring a 25-point margin back to 19 points
and from the kick in C Lyons nailed a cracker from the pocket down the other end to send it past 30 points
It was unfortunate for the margin to blow out late
but the Redlegs will take confidence in their method as they take on the ladder leading Adelaide Crows in Port Lincoln next Sunday
Norwood headed to Stratarama Stadium on Friday hoping for back to back wins in the Reserves
but faced a quality Glenelg side which ran out 43-point winners
kicking four goals to two in the opening term to go into the first break leading 4.0-24 to 2.4-16
thanks to back to back goals from Charlie Molan within the space of one minute before quarter time
kicking three consecutive behinds and then three quick goals to make it a 3.5 to 0.1 quarter in favour of the home side
The Redlegs were lucky Glenelg let them off the hook in front of goal
and it was the Tigers leading 5.9-39 to 4.1-25 at the main break
kicking four unanswered goals which made it seven majors on the trot for the Tigers to blow the margin out to 38 points
Jack Hodges goaled for Norwood before the three quarter time break to make it a 32-point game
before Glenelg put the game to bed with back to back goals
Molan was Norwood’s best with 23 disposals
five clearances and six tackles to go with his two first quarter goals as he pushes for a recall to the League side
while George McLeod and Isaac Saywell each had 24
The Redlegs face the undefeated Eagles on Friday night at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval
TOBY Greene and his fellow Greater Western Sydney forwards have ridden the Orange Tsunami to a 28-point win over St Kilda in their clash at Norwood Oval
After three straight wins and plenty of promising signs
the Saints winning streak was brought to an end in Gather Round
While they counter-punched with the only four goals of the final term
the damage had been done and GWS won 16.14 (110) to 12.10 (82)
Greene led the way with five goals in a best-afield performance and Jake Stringer
In 30-degree-plus conditions on Sunday afternoon
the Giants were red-hot from midway through the first quarter and shut St Kilda out of the game
Lachie Ash and Lachie Whitfield gave GWS ample drive off half-back
GWS kicked eight goals in the third term - their most prolific quarter of the year so far - to confirm the result with a 50-point break at the last change
Saints defender Callum Wilkie worked hard all day on GWS key forward Jesse Hogan
an impressive effort given the supply the Giants forwards had through the middle of the game
Saints speedster Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera had his first multiple-goal game
and was a feature of his side's final-term surge

Norwood played a Tasmanian Representative side in Senior Men's and Senior Women's Trial Matches on Sunday
Norwood’s Senior Men’s side recorded a dominant 67-point win in their first trial match of the 2025 campaign
against a Tasmanian representative side at Kingston Twin Ovals in Hobart on Sunday afternoon
The visiting Redlegs looked the stronger side right from the outset and extended their lead at every break to finish winners 16.16-112 to 7.3-45
pulled on the red and blue for the first time and slotted seamlessly into the line-up
Molan moved straight into the midfield and showcased his ability to win the ball and break away from the contest with speed
while Tasmanian recruit Nicholas lined up on the wing and showed plenty of dash
Former Port Adelaide defender McCallum had some big moments in defence and read the ball nicely
while Connor Ling was a standout through the middle and up forward
Luke Surman took most of the ruck duties and while undersized against former Andrew Phillips competed strongly and took some big contested marks
Jackson Callow was one of Norwood’s best with three goals
while Izaak Twelftree showed his versatility to also kick three in his new number 4 guernsey
Finn Heard booted two in his return game from an elbow injury
Jack Saunders shook off a heavy collision with Callow in the second quarter to kick two goals and have an influence around the ball as well
Billy Cootee and Ben Simpson were consistent contributors through the midfield
Josh Gillow and Jack Heard were steady in defence
the win was soured somewhat by a shoulder injury to Ethan Warburton in the second quarter that saw him helped off the ground
Norwood will next play Central District in a trial match at Elizabeth’s X Convenience Oval on Saturday
Norwood’s Senior Women brought their pre-season to a close with a thrilling three-point defeat against a strong Tasmanian representative side at Kingston Twin Ovals in Hobart on Sunday
The visitors were left to rue several missed opportunities in the last quarter as Lucy Thompson’s late shot bounced freakishly over the goal line to snatch the 5.3-33 to 4.6-30 victory for Tasmania
The contest remained close throughout the afternoon as both teams enjoyed brief periods of ascendancy in a high-quality match-up
A strong breeze favouring the northern end persisted across the day and made clean passages of play difficult for both sides
Norwood kicked against the wind in the first term and were forced to defend several early Tasmanian attacks before finding the first goal of the match through a clever snap from Shai Hiscock
The Redlegs started numerous attacks of their own in the second quarter but were unable to break through the Tasmanian defence until Sophie Arkun converted a long-range set shot on the stroke of half time
Kiana Lee put the Redlegs back in front early in the third term with a goal earned from a holding free kick in a marking contest
Norwood managed several more chances on goal
but the wind again played havoc as shots from Mykaela Walker
Lana Schwerdt and Grace Whittaker all fell short
Trailing by two points at three-quarter-time
Norwood had the last use of the breeze and quickly seized control to start the final term
Lee capped off a stellar afternoon with her second goal to put the Redlegs seven points clear with 12 minutes to play
Thompson kicked the final goal of the afternoon for the hosts to help the girls in “the map” guernsey register the three-point win
Norwood will be encouraged by the performance of several key players including Lee
Norwood’s SANFLW side will have a week’s break before getting their 2025 season underway against South Adelaide at Magain Stadium on Saturday
The Round 1 encounter will be a grand final rematch from last season
Norwood Captain Jacob Kennerley kicked an important third quarter goal on Thursday night
Norwood was outclassed by arch rivals Sturt at Coopers Stadium on Easter Thursday
with the Double Blues running out 41-point winners
Sturt was the better side for much of the night
not allowing Norwood any space to transition the ball in the 12.9-81 to 6.4-40 win
Norwood struggled to move the ball in the first half
while Sturt did well to hem the Redlegs into their defensive half and pressure their every move
The Redlegs were indecisive by foot moving inside 50m
and were punished by a slick Sturt midfield who were able to make the most of turnovers
After trailing by just four points at quarter time
the Double Blues put their foot down to lead by 33 points at half time
6.6-42 to 1.3-9 following a five-goal-to-none quarter
Norwood would have been in a deeper hole if it weren’t for Billy Cootee’s outstanding first half where he gathered 21 disposals
six marks) and Cooper Murley (15 disposals) were also flying the flag for the home side
Murley played one of his best games for Norwood
damaging from half back and laying some goal-saving tackles to finish with 23 touches
Norwood was a different side on the other side of the half time break
kicking three goals in five minutes to get itself well and truly back in the contest
At this point Sturt were ruing a first quarter which was dominated for a 1.5 return
Norwood’s third quarter goals came off the boot of Cootee from a set shot
a long captain’s goal from Jacob Kennerley and then a quality finish from the returning Izaak Twelftree
and got the margin back to 15 points in the blink of an eye
The Redlegs were feeding off a strong Norwood crowd
Suddenly it was the Double Blues on the back foot and needing the next major
leading 6.6-42 to 4.3-27 despite all their dominance
Will Snelling lifted his output and Sturt certainly answered the question as Jared Dakin kicked a steadying goal before three quarter time to make it a 23-point game
as the Double Blues kicked two quick goals through Dakin and Josh Hone
and the 23-point margin swelled to 35 within just three minutes
and Norwood found the next goal through Tristan Binder
but again Sturt was too good with goals through James Mathews and Amos Doyle to push the margin past 40 points
but Norwood ended up falling to a third straight defeat to start the season
Norwood won disposals 349-327 and marks 72-59 which highlighted its intention to hold onto the ball
Sturt dominated clearances 48-29 and inside 50m entries 59-32
Magarey Medal winner Snelling finished with 40 disposals
20 tackles and eight clearances for Sturt and Mitch Crowden 32 disposals
For Norwood Cootee had 31 disposals and a goal
The Redlegs next take on Glenelg at the Bay in an Anzac Day clash

The reigning premier Redlegs got off to a hot start
kicking four goals to two in the opening term to lead by 14 points at quarter time
It was in the second and third quarters were Norwood put the game to bed
kicking 10 goals to one to open up a match-high 65-point lead at three quarter time
Sturt managed three goals to Norwood’s two in the final quarter
It was a great reward for the Redlegs Reserves who have worn the brunt of a long injury list across the opening fortnight of the 2025 season
The Redlegs best was Charlie Molan who returned to the Reserves following a SANFL debut in Round 2
Playing his former Double Blues side Molan gathered 28 disposals
following up his 34 disposal-game in Round 2
Ethan Warburton had 27 disposals and Oliver Sanders 24
Connor McLean kicked for goals for Norwood
Prescott was one of three U18s playing Reserves on Thursday
with Darcy Speyer gathering 18 touches and Jeff Rozenbilds 22
Norwood’s U18 side will be hoping to start the season with back to back victories when they head to Richmond Oval on Saturday to take on West Adelaide
The Redlegs were on top for most of their Round 1 win over South Adelaide
aside from a lapse in the second and third quarters where the Panthers kicked four goals on the run
Norwood’s fitness came to the fore and overran South with the last seven goals of the game and went on to claim the Round 1 win
14.11-95 to 10.10-70 in hot conditions at Norwood Oval
“I was incredibly proud of our boys for the manner in which the got the win,” Norwood U18 coach Alex Newell said
then lose control due to a South Adelaide response and be able to self correct ourselves to get back to what we do best
in extremely trying and testing conditions is a testament to our conditioning
Norwood go into Round 2 with a settled lineup
and take on the Bloods who are also coming off a Round 1 win against North Adelaide
Westies led by seven points at quarter time
but ran away from the Roosters with a six-goal second quarter

“We are looking forward to getting another opportunity to showcase how we want to play at Richmond this weekend
It’s going to be an excellent contest
Westies had a strong win and played a strong brand of football Round 1
so we are going to need to be at our absolute best to start the season 2-0.”

Norwood’s U18s battled hard in the first term
before eventually going down by 52 points against a strong Double Blues side
Noah Daw was a shining light for the Redlegs
gathering 29 disposals and taking 10 marks in defence
Norwood trailed by three goals at quarter time
but were held goalless in the second term as Sturt continued to build the lead throughout the second and third quarters
Ealier in the day Sturt claimed a 39-point lead over Norwood in the U16s match
Both sides were inaccurate in the 9.12-66 to 3.9-27 result
The Double Blues looked the better side for most of the day
Norwood just couldn’t eat into the deficit due to its woes in front of goal
and at three quarter time it was 7.9-51 to 1.6-12 following a 2.4 to 0.4 third term
Sturt had the three highest disposal winners on the ground in Taj Garrett’s 39
while Thomas Gribben and Kai Ivins both had 23 for the Redlegs
Norwood’s U14 Boys Season gets underway this afternoon at Hisense Stadium
The Redlegs take on Glenelg in Richmond on Saturday
The game against the Tigers kicks off a seven-game SANFL U14 season
which is focussed on development and giving the players a chance to integrate within the club before going into an U16 program
“The club is really excited for many of these young men to experience wearing the red and blue in a SANFL competition for the first time,” Norwood Talent Manager Craig Roberts said
“Our club is a little unique as we only play a Metro side against opposition that many are full strength from their country and Metro regions
“As our country region is the EP this makes it very difficult with the travel
so with the work of the NAFC we both play a full country game in Pt Pirie in Round 5 on the back of our U16 & U18 fixtures
This will allow us to look at 50 players from our region.”
Norwood’s U14 side will be coached by Norwood SANFL Premiership midfielder and current senior listed player Declan Hamilton
The Boys and their families enjoyed a Season Launch during the week
where the players received their Norwood guernsey for the first time

then have enjoyed a seven-point win over North Adelaide and a 14-point win over the Eagles in Round 4

but could not convert in front of goal in the 6.19-55 to 6.5-41 win

before the Eagles came storming home with the final four goals to get the game back to 12 points and make Redlegs players and coaches more than a little nervous
Norwood was outstanding in every facet except for conversion
Charlie Best was outstanding for Norwood with 31 disposals
Mason Tambe gathered 28 touches and Cooper Allen 24
Norwood’s U18s went down to a quality Woodville-West Torrens side by 40 points on Sunday afternoon

SA U18 captain Maia Freemantle was named skipper of the 2025 AFLW U16 All Australian team
Norwood fell agonizingly short of a thrilling comeback victory at Unley Oval on Good Friday
with Sturt claiming a three-point win in the Ellen Maple Memorial Match
The Redlegs came from a match-high 22 points behind at three quarter time and kicked three unanswered goals in the final term
but in the end left themselves with too much to do in the 7.3-45 to 6.6-42 loss
Sturt’s Isobel Kuiper won the Ellen Maple Medal
adjudged best afield for her 26-disposal performance
while Norwood’s Kiana Lee was outstanding with four goals from 15 disposals
Two of Lee’s goals came in the final term
and was lining up for a third consecutive goal in the dying moments which unfortunately just drifted to the right for a minor score
From there the Double Blues were able to clear to the wing and hang on to their third win of the 2025 campaign
Georgie Jaques was named Norwood’s best for her job in defence and in the ruck
Sarah Branford had 14 disposals and Jade Halfpenny 13
winning clearances and disposals in the first quarter
which had been the Redlegs biggest worry over the first month of footy

After 10 minutes of the second term Norwood led 3.2-20 to 3.1-19 on a perfect afternoon for football
and Sturt finished with a three-goal-to-one quarter and it was the Double Blues that held a 4.2-26 to 3.3-21 lead at the main break
tackles 32-30 and marks 28-19 in what was an evenly poised contest
Tahlita Buethke had nine touches to half time while Lee and Branford had eight apiece
The ball lived in Norwood’s forward zone in the early stages of the second half
it was the Double Blues that were able to boot the first goal on the counter attack
running the ball from one end of the ground to the other to finish with a walk-in Zara Walsh goal
Walsh’s goal put Sturt 11 points in front and from the centre bounce the Double Blues found a second goal within a minute as Millie McCarthy helped her side to a 6.2-38 to 3.3-21 lead five minutes into the half
Despite the positive start from the Redlegs
and making it four Double Blues goals in a row to turn a one-point deficit into a 22-point lead
That was the margin at three quarter time as the Double Blues led 7.2-44 to 3.4-22 and it was going to be a tough task for the Redlegs
After a six goals to one stretch Norwood needed to turn it around quickly
Norwood did all it could and Amelia Rusden got the scoring underway in the final term
From there it was Lee or bust for the Redlegs
Lee’s third goal brought the margin back to 10 points with eight minutes remaining
While her fourth meant there was just four points separating the two sides
and Norwood was pressing hard as it lived in the Redlegs forward zone
but it faded to the right and the Double Blues were able to hold on

Norwood’s SANFLW Development League season has drawn to a close
claiming a four-point win over Sturt at Unley on Good Friday
The Redlegs will be ruing a late-season wobble which cost themselves a spot in this Sunday’s Grand Final
having started the season 4-0 after the first month
Back to back losses to North Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens in Rounds 5 and 6 brought the Redlegs back to the pack and requiring a 10-goal win in Round 7 to give themselves any chance in the decider
it came up against a very competitive Sturt line up which fought right to the end despite having an even harder task to make it to the Grand Final themselves
Norwood overcame a two-point deficit at three quarter time to run out 5.3-33 to 4.5-29 winners
Its back to back third place finishes for Norwood
making it four consecutive top three finishes for the Redlegs

Norwood forward Jackson Callow will have the chance to play a Trial Match in his home State of Tasmania
Norwood’s Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s sides will head to Tasmania in early March for a pre-season trip and Trial Match
The Redlegs have had a strong link to Tasmania in recent years
through former Senior Men’s coach Jade Rawlings and a number of players relocating to The Parade from the Apple Isle
Oliver Sanders and Candice Belbin all hail from Tasmania and have had a huge impact in the red and blue
and heading down to Tasmania during this pre-season
Norwood players and coaches will head to Hobart on March 1
before scheduled Trial Matches against a Tasmanian representative side on Sunday
The Norwood teams will have a Captains Run training session on Saturday
March 1 from 1:30pm at Kingston Twin Ovals
The games are scheduled for the following times on Sunday
Norwood’s Senior Men have two further Trial Matches to round out the pre-season:
Saturday afternoon was the 100th time a Norwood Football Club side ran out to compete in a SANFL Women’s match
It was meant to be a day of celebration at The Parade
as Sarah Branford notched up her 50th match
Charlee Brooksby made her debut and past Norwood players watched on from the stands to commemorate the milestone
But on the field West Adelaide ruined the party in a clinical 27-point win
Norwood was held to just one behind in the second half
as the Bloods ran all over the hosts in the 5.12-42 to 2.3-15 result
The Redlegs defence was under the pump all afternoon
the avalanche of inside 50m entries and clearances eventually got the better of Norwood
West Adelaide was outstanding and ended up winning inside 50m +26 (47-21)
clearances +10 (35-25) and disposals +19 (235-206)
An impossible task for the Redlegs diligent defenders
The visitors dominated these metrics most of the day
but couldn’t put it on the scoreboard in the first half
The Redlegs led by four points at half time
but were able to make the most of their 12 forward 50m entries
while the Bloods couldn’t capitalise on their 22 visits into their attacking zone
West Adelaide put two goals on the board on the other side of half time to quickly turn the four-point deficit into a 10-point lead at three quarter time
Two further goals came in the final term to put the game to bed
Norwood actually started the game positively
as Emma Clark kicked the first goal of the game for the home team
following a strong forward 50m tackle from Charli Hazelhurst who caused the turnover
From there West Adelaide looked the more composed team transitioning into its forward line
The Bloods struck back with the next goal from Lucy Waye and with this West took back the lead
Last year’s best and fairest Jade Halfpenny was outstanding for Norwood in the first term
Norwood’s pressure was exceptional in the opening quarter
while the Redlegs also led clearances +2 and marks +3
The Redlegs looked sharp coming out of quarter time
Emily Bartsch did well to touch a Bloods dribbling shot over the behind line
which proved crucial with the next goal coming from the kick in
Norwood moved the ball quickly to the wing to Jiarna Zerella
who belted the ball inside 50m where Hazelhurst finished with the goal
Norwood led 2.2-14 to 1.4-10 at the main break
and it was now the home side that looked dangerous moving forward
The Redlegs had five inside 50m entries for two scores (1.1)
while the Bloods had gone inside 13 times for 0.2 in the second term
The Bloods did well to restrict Halfpenny to just one disposal in the second term
but it was Kiana Lee that started turning the screws with six touches in the term and nine for the half
Ruby Ballard had 12 disposals and Zoe Venning 11 for the Bloods
The Redlegs defence was doing an outstanding job
with the home side trailing inside 50m entries -10 and clearances -4
But it was Norwood leading by four points on the scoreboard
The ball was parked in West Adelaide’s forward half to start the third term
going 9-1 inside 50m entries in the opening 12 minutes
This time the Bloods were able to put some scoreboard pressure on
transforming nine entries into four scores
Norwood fought back late in the third term
stringing together back to back forward transitions and managing to lock the ball in its 50m attacking zone
But this time it was the Bloods who defended strongly to conclude a dominant third quarter from the visitors
which saw them gain 11-5 inside 50m and 9-6 clearances to boot 2.2 to no score
It was West Adelaide leading 3.6-24 to 2.2-14 at the final break
as West continued to belt the ball inside 50m
and to the Redlegs credit their defence continued to hold sway
Norwood couldn’t move the ball past half way
and West Adelaide couldn’t strike the winning blow
kicking three behinds in the first seven minutes
This kept the door ajar for the Redlegs if they were good enough to penetrate through the strong wall West had built across half forward
who finally kicked the all-important first goal of the final term to go 19-points in front
It came off the boot of former Redleg Alana Lishmund
A minute later the game was well and truly buried
when Emma Kilpatrick kicked one of the goals of the season out of the centre bounce
but in the end they were outclassed by the Bloods for most of the afternoon
but off the field there was still much to celebrate

who fought to the end against the red-hot Norwood
Westies started and ended the game strongly
but Norwood dominated the third term to make it tricky for the Bloods who now sit seventh at 1-3
Norwood trailed by six points at quarter time
before it held Westies to one behind in the second term
while the home side slammed home two goals
The Redlegs led by 15 points at the final change
and as West came charging out of the blocks in the final term the home side were ruing missed opportunities from the third quarter
it held off the fast finishing Westies to round out winners 4.5-29 to 3.3-21
The Redlegs take on North Adelaide at Hisense Stadium on Sunday as they look to make it five on the trot

It was a game of two halves and wicked momentum swings on Saturday evening
as Norwood was run down by Woodville-West Torrens in a six-point thriller at Woodville Oval
The Redlegs led by as much as 30 points in the third quarter
before the Eagles kicked 10 of the next 13 goals to run straight past Norwood on the way to a 14.8-92 to 12.14-86 win
In the closing stages of the game Woodville-West Torrens had all the momentum
14 points in front with eight minutes to go
before Billy Cootee nailed a long range goal from 50m to give the Redlegs a sniff
The ball was locked in Norwood’s forward half for the final five minutes
and had to accept a second straight defeat to start the 2025 SANFL season
seemingly leaving behind the demons of its disappointing Round 1 loss to North Adelaide
finding a goal in the first 90 seconds of the match and didn’t look back
as they went on to boot eight first half goals to four
and maintain a 28-point lead at the main break
Celebrating their past in the Round 2 clash
the Eagles changed from their blue West Torrens guernsey into their yellow Woodville strip at half time
the game was flipped on its head as the Eagles came out all guns blazing
to kick 10 second half goals to four in a complete momentum swing
Woodville-West Torrens chipped away at the lead Norwood had built
starting with a six-goal-to-three third quarter
to get the game back to a manageable 13-point margin at the final break
This came in the form of four goals in seven minutes to turn a 30-point margin into six points
Cootee nailed a nerve settling goal from a stoppage to ensure Norwood turned for home leading
but the momentum was firmly with the home side
The lead evaporated in the blink of an eye
as the Eagles had four set shots in the opening six minutes of the final term to reclaim the lead for the first time since mid-way through the first term
and went on to have the first seven shots of the deciding quarter
and trailing by six points the Redlegs were charging the ball towards goal as the siren blew on a tough loss to take
Jayden Gale kicked his first of three goals in the opening 90 seconds of the match
and the Redlegs had a spark and positivity about them that wasn’t evident in the first round match against the Roosters
Callow had seven disposals and five marks (two contested) in the first term
He could have easily had three first quarter goals
but finished with just the one for the day from 17 touches and eight marks
The Redlegs had 12 consecutive forward 50m entries and finished the quarter leading 4.4-28 to 2.2-14
with his second off the back of Declan Hamilton breaking the lines from half back
stopping multiple goal scoring opportunities
but kicked three consecutive behinds to start the second term
until Finn Heard nailed his second goal to put Norwood 23 points up
Form there the Redlegs found their kicking boots
and kicked three more goals without a blemish in a half where everything worked out
Even when they fumbled or made a poor decision
the ball seemed to end up ok for the visitors
A ball went over the head of a Norwood forward and landed in Connor Ling’s lap
who went back to nail his first goal in red and blue
Seymour chiseled a corridor kick to Daniel Gauci
giving to Jack Saunders who nailed a perfect snap goal
A dominant half was capped off with a Tristan Binder set shot
which put Norwood up by 28 points following a four-goal-to-two term
At half time the Redlegs led 8.7-55 to 4.3-27
and the Eagles were lucky it was only a five-goal deficit
The home crowd were also making it known of the lop-sided free kick count
O’Neill had 17 disposals to the halfway point
Heard and Seymour had been excellent off half back
while second gamer Josh Gillow had stood tall in several one on one contests on the last line of defence
The Eagles swapped from their West Torrens guernsey into their Woodville guernsey at half time
but in the end the Eagles had the momentum at the right time
Norwood kicked five straight goals in the first half to establish the lead
and the Eagles were good enough to run it down with 10 of the next 13
There was a lot to like about the Redlegs game
but in the end Woodville-West Torrens were better in the key moments
Norwood will have to wait until Easter Thursday for its Round 3 match
an undermanned Norwood Reserves side were outplayed by Woodville-West Torrens at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval on Saturday afternoon
Dom White and Connor McLean returned from injury through the Reserves on Saturday
but it was the Eagles who kicked the first seven goals of the game to take a 48-point lead at half time
Norwood was much improved in the second half
and keeping the Eagles to four majors as well
The Redlegs kicked the first three goals of the second half
through Jacob Jones (two) and McLean to win the third quarter 3.5 to 1.3 and reduce the margin to 36 points
Woodville-West Torrens ensured there was no comeback
kicking three last quarter goals to go 2-0
and leave Norwood at 0-2 alongside Central District and West Adelaide
The Redlegs take on the 1-1 Sturt on Easter Thursday at The Parade
Norwood midfielder Billy Cootee pressured by three North players during Saturday night's Round 1 clash
Norwood’s 2025 SANFL season got off to a challenging start on Saturday night
going down to a wayward North Adelaide side by 32 points at Coopers Stadium
On a perfect night for football at The Parade
the Redlegs under new coach Jade Sheedy went down to a quality Roosters lineup
The Roosters ran all over the home side in the first half
leaving Norwood 43 points down and on the ropes mid-way during the second term
the Redlegs worked their way into the match as North Adelaide squandered countless opportunities in the second half
Norwood kicked three goals to two after half time
but it was 3.3 to 2.10 in the second half in a game dominated by the red and white
Gun Roosters Keenan Ramsey and Alex Spina were well held
but Angus Schumacher (26 disposals) and Oskar Faulkhead (23) were a handful
The returning Nik Rokahr was the leading ball winner on the ground with 29 disposals
Matt Ling 23 and Cooper Murley 21 for Norwood as the ball lived in North’s forward half for much of the game
restricting the Roosters to eight goals from 53 entries with plenty of pressured and wayward shots
but Norwood’s struggles came transitioning the ball into the forward line
When they could escape from their defensive zone
the Redlegs looked dangerous running the ball through the midfield but constantly broke down transitioning into forward 50
Norwood headed into Round 1 with an extensive injury list
Will Rowlands and Luke Surman (late out) on the sidelines
as five players made their Round 1 debuts – Liam Ling
Billy Cootee and Jacob Kennerley in the first centre bounce
up against former Redleg ruckman Alex van Wyk
with winger Jake Cresswell finding the first kick of the evening
Rokahr sent Norwood inside 50m and the game
It looked that Norwood had the first goal on the board
but it was touched off Cresswell’s soccering boot
From the kick out it was North which drew first blood
the game became stagnent as the contested game took over in North’s forward half
restricting the Roosters to 1.4-10 to 0.1-1 after 15 minutes
and eventually Ewan Mackinlay kicked the Roosters second
Heard provided an excellent forward 50m contest to spill the ball to Jayden Gale
The Redlegs defenders stood up under the pressure of 16 first quarter inside 50m
and would have been happy to go in and reset at quarter time 17 points down
but North unfortunately found their third in the final minute from Kelsey Rypstra
Recruits for their respective clubs Rokahr (Norwood) and Angus Schumacher (North) started the game strongly
marks +12 and had 16-9 inside 50m entries for 10 scoring shots to two
The Redlegs again moved the ball nicely along the wing and through the middle of the ground
and missing players in space with wayward kicks
as the Roosters slammed home two quick goals early in the second term to make it a 37-point lead at the eight-minute mark
North added another to make it a match high 43 points
and from there the Redlegs managed to maintain the football
The highlight of the first half was Norwood’s first goal
which came off the boot of debutant Liam Ling at the 19-minute mark of the second term
Norwood enjoyed a good patch before half time
and Gale booted the Redlegs second goal three minutes later to make the half time margin 31 points
Rokahr was well held in the second term with just three disposals
while Schumacher (18 disposals) and Faulkhead (17) had found plenty of the footy
but the big difference was the way the teams were directing the ball into their attacking zones
Jackson Callow set the tone coming out of half time
but again it was North that responded on the scoreboard
with Mitch Harvey booting the Roosters seventh goal two minutes into the half
The Roosters started the third quarter strongly
but it was for a return of 1.5 and another shot out on the full
The Redlegs looked dangerous when they could escape defensive 50m
as McCallum went bouncing through the middle of the ground
who turned and spotted Mitch O’Neill 40m out
and reduced the margin to 35 points and gave Norwood a heartbeat
which would have annoyed the Roosters who had dominated the term for no scoreboard reward
Heard and Rokahr couldn’t nail goals which would have brought the margin back under 30 points
Despite North’s dominance in the third term it was one goal each
and the door was ajar at three quarter time
Kennerley came storming out of the centre square to start the final term
which was a snapshot into the night for the Redlegs
Heard nailed a huge goal a few seconds later
and had other chances to ice the game but missed
and Pierce Seymour made the most of a down-field free kick and nailed the goal
but the improved second half is momentum to take into next Saturday’s Round 2 clash with Woodville-West Torrens
Norwood’s extensive injury list was felt most at Reserves level
with the inexperienced Redlegs going down to North Adelaide by 109 points on Saturday night
including three current U18s in Harper Bromson
Jake Hill and Luke Scott who are in their first season of senior football
North kicked four unanswered goals in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to a 18.11-119 to 1.4-10 win
Jack Hodges was the sole goal scorer for Norwood
while George McLeod was the Redlegs best player with 31 disposals on a tough night
Charlie Molan (19 disposals) and Rozenbilds (17 disposals) also showed good signs in their first outings for Norwood’s Reserves side
Jack Michalanney played his first Senior Men’s game at Norwood
during Saturday afternoon’s loss to North
Norwood’s SANFLW side faces a must-win clash when it head to Glenelg this Friday to take on the Tigers on Anzac Day
In what will be a rematch of last year’s SANFLW Preliminary Final
both the Redlegs and Tigers are surprisingly stranded at the bottom of the ladder after five matches in 2025
however this game threatens to be a heated battle as both sides are keen to get their seasons underway
but the shorter season means the Redlegs will have to get on a run in a hurry if they are keen to taste finals action in 2025
The Redlegs have made two changes from last week’s loss to Sturt
as Lottie Almond comes in to make her debut alongside Charli Hazelhurst who returns to the side
After spending time up on the wing to start the season
it seems Kiana Lee will be a more permanent forward on Friday
Lee booted four goals in her last outing against Sturt
and at times looked like the difference maker in the narrow 7.3-45 to 6.6-42 loss
helping her side overturn a four-goal deficit at three quarter time
Off-season recruit Georgie Jaques looks settled at half back

Norwood Football Manager Richard Kelly said this was an exciting prospect for the club
“We jumped at the opportunity to head down to Tasmania
with both our Senior Men’s and Senior Women’s sides,” Kelly said
“AFL Tasmania are looking to have some marquee games across the season and a trial there was a perfect opportunity to get involved
“It will be a great experience for our playing group
and particularly exciting for the Tasmanians in our squad
including a few more form Tasmania so we are looking forward to seeing them in Norwood colours for the first time.”
Norwood forward Jackson Callow is one of many Tasmanians currently listed with the Redlegs
“I’m very excited to be playing again at home,” the former Hawthorn forward said
“It’s something special that you do miss when you’re away
so it’s special to be representing not only Norwood
but the relationship the club and Tasmanian football have
“It will be a proud moment for me and all of us Tassie boys when we head out onto the oval on Sunday.”
The Tasmanian trial marks the end of the trial match period for Norwood’s Senior Women’s side

while 2025 is Poke’s first at The Parade
which is a great sign after missing the 2024 season with injury
This is Norwood’s final Trial match ahead of the SANFLW season opener on March 15

Jade Halfpenny and Kiana Lee are all making the trip to Tasmania
A fast-finishing Norwood outfit recorded an 18-point win over a strong Port Adelaide at Alberton Oval on Sunday in the club’s third and final SANFL trial match of the pre-season
The Redlegs had two wins and a loss from their 2025 trials against Port Adelaide
but all attention now turns to a Round 1 blockbuster with North Adelaide at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night
Playing a Port side that had 17-AFL listed players
the Redlegs trailed by two goals late in the third term but stormed home with four unanswered goals in the last quarter to claim victory
With several key players sidelined with injury
Norwood fielded a relatively young and inexperienced squad with several emerging players getting an opportunity
Defenders George McLeod and Josh Gillow were both solid down back while Daniel Gauci had some nice moments and Jack Hodges battled valiantly as a pinch-hitting ruckman
Off-season recruits Mitch Nicholas and Charlie Molan were both impressive through the midfield
with Molan kicking his first goal in Norwood colours with a quick snap from the pocket in the last quarter
Tasmanian brothers Connor and Liam Ling were stationed mostly across the half-forward line
while Tom McCallum had a strong aerial presence in defence against his former side
With fellow key forwards Finn Heard and Jackson Callow out of the team
Tristan Binder led the way up forward with two goals and a series of strong marks on the lead
Jake Cresswell also booted two important goals in the last quarter to cap off a typically reliable performance on the wing
Ollie Sanders was a consistent contributor across the afternoon and was creative with ball in hand
while Billy Cootee was one of Norwood’s best and found plenty of the footy
Skipper Jacob Kennerley provided his customary toughness around the ball and nailed a set shot from 40m into a difficult breeze
Jack Saunders spent more time around the footy and battled hard
as did Declan Hamilton who worked to provide support at both ends of the ground
Experienced duo Jack Heard and Pierece Seymour led the defence expertly and won some crucial one-on-one contests throughout the day
Cooper Murley showed plenty of run and dash from the half back line while Isaac Saywell worked hard around the ball as well
Luke Surman fought tirelessly in the ruck against AFL-listed ruckmen Dante Visentini and Ivan Soldo and followed up well at ground level to win some crucial possessions
Norwood’s Reserves played South Adelaide in a trial at Alberton earlier in the day
and went down by 41 points in really difficult conditions
South – who had several regular League players returning from injury – had a nightmare in front of goal
The Redlegs long injury list was felt most by the Reserves
but the side battled hard throughout the day
Mitch O’Neill and Finn Heard are expected to play Round 1

is a potential father-son prospect for the Tigers
with SA’s following matches being against Victoria Metro (Sunday June 8) in SA

When Matt Panos received a phone call from Crows Head of Development Mick Godden
who had just hung up his SANFL boots after a 150-game career with Norwood
knew Godden as an opposition coach - first of Woodville-West Torrens and then the Crows
a two-time Premiership player and Jack Oatey Medallist
over to the Crows’ nest to work within the Club’s SANFL coaching cohort
who is the head of development at the Crows
gave me a call and floated the idea of coming on board to work within the SANFL program,” Panos told AFC Media
“I had spoken to him (Godden) a few times over the last couple of years after games or at functions
we had a conversation at the Magarey two years ago
“But his phone call was a little bit out of the blue
“It was something that I hadn’t really thought about or really didn’t know if it was an option
so he (Godden) caught me off guard a little bit.”
After a few more conversations and a catch-up with Crows SANFL Senior Coach Matthew Wright, Panos accepted the role as midfield development coach
almost three months later and entrenched in Adelaide’s SANFL program
Panos said he was pleased he answered that phone call
“I caught up with Wrighty as well and thought it would be a really good fit and it all sort of made sense,” the former midfielder/forward said
“We spoke about what the role is and how it would look and for me
it was a good stepping stone to maybe becoming a coach
“I always thought I wanted to go down a path of coaching
not necessarily knowing at what level and what sort of coach
but this is the best opportunity out of anything I would’ve thought or dreamed of coming straight out of the game
“It’s been almost a breath of fresh air for me
and I think a new environment has been really good
The former Norwood Captain’s decorated SANFL career included booting 175 goals
playing in the Redlegs’ 2014 Grand Final win before kicking the winner in their 2022 flag
Despite rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in Round Four last year
Panos overcame long odds and lined up in Norwood’s Grand Final against Glenelg
The game didn’t go as Panos would’ve hoped
but he said the decision to retire was made at the start of the year
“I was lucky enough to come back and play and unfortunately the result didn’t go our way in the Grand Final,” Panos said
“But from early on I knew that it would be my last year so that probably helped me transition into coaching and not want to be drawn back into playing
I feel like I always wanted to finish at the highest level I could
“It was a tough ending to my career but I can’t really look at the last 15 years in one game
having a son and caring for a family puts life into perspective a bit more.”
Panos said transitioning from playing to coaching has been easier than he thought it would be and he hasn’t looked back since
“I thought I was really going to struggle with not playing,” Panos said
“I absolutely loved everything about playing
trying to get better every session - that’s something I really enjoyed and the reason I played so long
“But not really missing it that much has been surprising for me
at the moment I am really enjoying sitting back and being able to coach and see the game in a different light
“I’ve got a really good connection with Andy McPherson and with Wrighty as well
We think about the game the same and get to share ideas.”
The Crows’ SANFL side had its first pre-season hit-out on Friday night and enjoyed a 50-point win against Woodville-West Torrens
Panos said he was keen to continue developing as a coach and had been impressed with the Crows’ SANFL-listed players commitment
“They don’t know if they’re going to get a game at the end of it and training and being dependent on how many AFL players play
but training standards are really high,” Panos said
“The guys have put in a lot of work over the summer and some of the boys have been able to train with the AFL guys as well which has been an amazing experience for them
“I want to get involved as much as I can and being straight out of the game
the team does really well and we can get back into the finals
you never know what can happen in September if you hit form at the right time.”
