I think that this is because it has moved from being a Christian festival to being the Festival of Family
The Christmas feast of my childhood was roast chicken and stuffing
before they became degraded into mass-consumption factory takeaway
Many families bought a live chicken and killed and plucked it themselves
homemade Christmas pudding and whipped cream with coins and fortune-telling trinkets cooked inside the pudding (the coins having been hygienically boiled before being put in the pudding; you never know
they could’ve been “in a Chinaman’s pocket”)
and Schweppes soft drinks too bitter for children but we tried anyway
gift-giving (the gifts for me usually utilitarian – a briefcase
fountain pen – those sort of things; I wanted frivolous toys – a costume trunk and magic kits)
Some time in the 1970s or 1980s it became the Occasion for Bombshell Announcements
or an engagement to someone of another religion
When I announced one Christmas that I was “going to be a writer” (instead of going into the family business)
it was about as shocking for my family as if I’d said
I’m gay.” My father was fond of Mark Twain and considered I wasn’t Mark Twain and unlikely to be Mark Twain
I remember vividly the day in my early 30s when I decided family Christmas was over for me
It came with the realisation that my family and I didn’t like each other very much – that is
It was the day that I told the most ridiculous lie I have ever told
I was living in Canberra at the time and rented a car to drive home to Nowra
The rented car was brand new and on the way down I remember thinking that the whole car
I speculated on whether some of the smell was the paint on the new engine burning off
I was within 10 kilometres of home when I stopped the car
feeling ill from anxiety and realised I couldn’t face family Christmas ever again
I rang home; my father answered and I told him that the paint burning off the new engine of the new car had made me sick
I heard him relay the message to my mother: “He says he is sick from engine paint.” He seemed unsurprised by this excuse from a pain-in-the-arse
I began having Christmas deep in the rugged bushland in the mountains 70 kilometres behind where I grew up – almost home
I suppose: my living family at the eastern boundary of the mountains
my convict forebears at the western boundary back in the 19th century
I wrote a short story about one of these bush Christmases
My story tells of a guy turning 40 with a younger woman friend
and she cooks a remarkable meal on the camp fire
and rested the camp cooking dishes on the coals ..
She first put potatoes wrapped in foil on the coals
Then she put on the rabbit pieces after smearing them with mustard and wrapping them in foil and muttering “lapin moutarde”
She wormed the rabbit down into the coals with a flat stick
candied the carrots with sugar sachets from the motel
throwing in a dash of her Bloody Mary mix – she was going through a Bloody Mary phase – again saying something to herself that he didn’t catch
she’d slipped into a squatting posture that belonged to the primitive way of doing things – a few thousand years ago when we cooked on camp fires ..
It was warm and there were bush flies that worried her and she kept brushing them away with her hand
“Sooner or later in the Australian bush you have to stop shooing the flies and let them be.”
She put the imported English plum pudding on to be warmed and mixed careful custard
throwing on a piece of wood at the back at the right time for some quick heat
He opened a bottle of 1968 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz ..
She presented the meal with perfect timing
“Thank you – but you aren’t the only person in Australia who can cook on a camp fire
“Actually it was the first time I’ve cooked a meal on a camp fire.”
pinning her arms to stop her waving away the summer flies that were crawling over their faces
She knew what he was doing and didn’t say a word
After he asked her if the rock slab had hurt
Belle and I had a few good bush Christmases and other sorts of Christmases together
I received a story written by Will Glasgow (a writer I do not know)
in which his male character and a woman friend go into the bush to re-enact my Christmas-in-the-bush story
He cooks a more contemporary Christmas meal
adding eggplant to the garlic and pancetta already in the cast-iron pan
“But the night looks like it will be an improvement – this smells delicious.” He splashes some more olive oil into the pan and stirs … now the stars shone magnificently above; now a white mist had filled the gorge below
In the story they get around to making love on the rock slab
The rock’s hurting me – it’s grazing my back.”
organised waifs-and-strays Christmas dinners
had a leg of lamb and roasted vegetables cooked by young Sam Dettmann
a political wizard whose parents – my friends – were away
and Goodnight Island oysters from my remarkable oysterman at Greenwell Point
a young wizard of a writer who is out of touch with her family and who had to work that day at the Sydney Zoo
She arrived in the evening smelling of wild animals
Because Alli is a vegetarian Sam cooked for her a whole pumpkin stuffed with seasoned breadcrumbs
porcini mushrooms and fresh herbs from the garden
We were a good pretend family for the night

The much-needed alternative connection between the Nowra CBD and the suburbs and villages east of Nowra is a step closer following the appointment of Leckring Pty Ltd T/A MIEngineers (partnering with Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd) to undertake project management
and design services for the East Nowra Sub Arterial (ENSA) Road project.
ENSA has been provided $12 million from the NSW Government to complete the next phase of the project
design and early construction works.
Mayor Patricia White said ENSA was a significant infrastructure project that would reduce congestion on the Princes Highway at Nowra and create a critical connection between the Princes Highway and Greenwell Point Road.
“This project is key to unlocking current congestion through Nowra and will remove around 4,000 vehicles a day from the highway,” Cr White said.
“With more visitors travelling to the region and traffic volumes on the Princes Highway exceeding capacity
the awarding of this tender represents a major milestone on the project,” she said.
“Leckring Pty Ltd T/A MIEngineers is an experienced consultancy who is well placed to undertake this contract based on their unique offering as a local firm with significant background knowledge and experience in delivering projects of similar nature and scale.”
The Member for South Coast Liza Butler said she was pleased to see the project progressing to the next stage of development
“The Minns Labor Government has listened to the community and by providing this investment to Shoalhaven council we have made progressing this project a priority for our local community
“The ENSA Road project will relieve pressure along the Kalandar Street and Princes Highway intersection
reduce congestion through to the Nowra CBD and become the new primary route for traffic moving between the highway and Worrigee and the coastal villages to the east
“This is part of our commitment to exploring both medium and long-term initiatives to provide a safer Princes Highway
and help make the growing community of the Nowra region a better place to live
study and visit.”
The contract includes services such as:
Council resolved to proceed with the contract at the Ordinary Meeting on 12 November 2024.
The benefits of the ENSA road include:
Formal engagement of the Consultant is underway with design and investigation works to commence in the coming months

100 metres from his home he was (allegedly) murdered."
Police will allege an altercation unfolded between two men who were known to each other about 5.45pm on April 20

The Berry Street car park in Nowra is destined to be Shoalhaven’s second electric vehicle (EV) charging station following a decision by Council at the Ordinary Meeting on Tuesday 25 March.
The proposed EV chargers will be accessible to all EV drivers and will host four DC fast chargers
including two 180kW ABB Terra DC chargers capable of charging an EV to 80% in 20 minutes.
Mayor Patricia White said that this was a great deal for residents and visitors with NRMA responsible for the cost of the installation
“Council will enter into a five-year licence with the NRMA where they will pay $6,000 per annum in rent and see that Council is not incurring any costs with this project,” Cr White said.
“There are many benefits to having EV chargers in the Shoalhaven including boosting tourism
encouraging EV adoption and promoting sustainable travel,” she said.
“The facility forms part of the National EV charging network which aims to connect communities and improve EV infrastructure in more regional locations
It’s great the Shoalhaven is part of this vision.”
Shoalhaven residents and visitors were invited to have their say on the proposed EV charging station with the Berry Street site widely supported by 85% of 86 survey respondents.
While the new EV charging station will result in the net loss of one car parking space
the loss is not considered detrimental to the function of the car park and availability of car parking for the public
The proposed EV charging spaces will result in a continual turnover of vehicles based on the estimated 30 minutes charging time per vehicle.
The Berry Street facility will be the second EV charging location on Council land
with the first of its generation 400kW Ultra-fast charger (capable of charging an EV in around 15 minutes) now live at South St Ulladulla.
The EV charging station should be operational by mid-year 2025.

“She had no sense of danger, no sense of what the world was all about. She lived in her own little world,” Mr Montgomery told The Daily Telegraph
Mr Montgomery said Airlie had never left the yard on her own before
“It’s not like we’d ever had near misses with her
this was the first time anything like this had happened.”

She had visited the Grotto where she was found once or twice previously with her family
A GoFundMe set up to help Airlie’s heartbroken family has so far raised nearly $27,000
friends of the family told reporters that Airlie was seen crying on the day of her death and that was out of character
Local neighbour, Cathy, told The Daily Mail, Airlie was crying and “no one knows why”.
“She was a lovely little thing, non-verbal, but a happy girl always smiling and blowing kisses when she saw you,” Cathy said.
“Except yesterday she was crying, no one knows why... and then I didn’t see her.
“She must have wandered off. Everyone in the neighbourhood was so good. We all went out to look for her.”
Shoalhaven Mayor Patricia White said the community was devastated by the news.
“This is just an absolute tragedy,” Ms White said.
“Words cannot describe how horrible this is.
“Hold your kids tight, chat to your neighbours to see if they’re okay.
Airlie’s funeral is set to be held next week.

The growing suburbs of Worrigee and South Nowra are chalking up some major milestones thanks to a major sewerage infrastructure project carried out by Shoalhaven Water.
Measuring 11 metres deep and 5 metres in diameter
the newly constructed chamber is officially the Shoalhaven’s deepest sewer pump station well
designed to collect wastewater and pump it to the Nowra Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Brenden Logue said major works were being carried out as part of the South Nowra Surcharge Main project which would support recent and future residential developments.
“With 1,000 lots in South Nowra predicted to be connected to the sewer system
major upgrades are happening to ensure the infrastructure can handle this increased usage,” Mr Logue said.
“Part of these works have included over one kilometre of gravity mains leading into the pump station
which allows wastewater to naturally flow through pipes into the chamber,” he said.
“The scale of the infrastructure allows for additional storage capacity in the sewer network system
meaning we can handle severe wet weather events to minimise the risk of overflows.”
The South Nowra Surcharge Main transfers sewage from six different pump stations in South Nowra and Worrigee to the Nowra Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Recent works near Old Southern Road and Killara Road through to Greenwell Point Road include:
The project is due for completion in mid-2027.
The size and scale of the project can be seen in Shoalhaven Water’s video at this link.

that the distress and dysfunction evident in the United States in the first 100 days of the Trump administration made voters reluctant to risk a version of that under the Trumpesque Dutton in Australia
His luck was compounded by the Liberal team's shocking underperformance
ineffective advertising and an overall lack of focus blighted their campaign from the outset
Labor national secretary Paul Erickson and key party figures combined to ensure the government got the jump on the Coalition before the election was imminent
This included getting Albanese onto the hustings early in the new year
making policy announcements that demonstrated a commitment to build Australia's future
Albanese himself shook off the torpor evident since the failed Voice referendum campaign and presented a more energetic and congenial face to Australians than the awkward and floundering Dutton
The Coalition's election postmortem is likely to hinge on the mystery of why
given the scores of interest rate rises since the previous election and misery experienced by so many Australians as a result
it did not simply hammer the cost of living as its return ticket to power
It should also dwell on the lesson that a leader and policies that please local oligarchs and right-wing media echo chambers make winning the centre ground needed for election victory in Australia hard
That one-third of Australians gave an independent or minor party candidate their first preference vote should be the focus of serious contemplation by the major parties

That increased security will also enable him to drop the petty persecution of rivals that gives voters an insight into the lesser side of the sunny personality he publicly presents
Whether he does either of those things will remain to be seen
Labor MPs will also have to play their role properly in this term of government
Slavish quiescence to an all-powerful prime minister produces paltry results

after pleading guilty to sexually touching another person without consent
Man faces a year in jail for grabbing woman at a Nowra service stationAgreed facts presented to the court said Wellington was purchasing a few items from the service station shortly before 9am on September 10
A woman stopped to get petrol on her way to taking her child to school
and was walking in the service station's office as Wellington was walking out
She stepped to the left to let Wellington pass
but he used his right hand to grab her vaginal area
After paying for her fuel the woman saw Wellington climb into the rear seat of a car
She went to the Nowra Police station after dropping her child at school
and officers obtained the service station's CCTV footage of the event
Magistrate Lisa Viney noted the incident was "opportunistic"
She said Wellington's moral culpability was moderated by the fact he had "significant cognitive impairment" along with mental health issues including schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder
He was also a long-time user of cannabis and methamphetamines
Wellington was on bail at the time of the offence
and Magistrate Viney said since then he had been subjected to a strict curfew
She said she would have normally imposed a 15-month jail term for the offence
but reduced it to 12 months to make allowances for Wellington's guilty pleas and two months spent on remand
However how that sentence is to be served remains up in the air
as Wellington's suitability for home detention is to be assessed

When Professor of Landscape Architecture Gay Williams was on the hunt for a practical learning project for her second
she discovered the Nowra Riverfront Revitalisation Project
The Shoalhaven City Council were seeking innovate ideas to transform their local spaces – and Gay had an idea
“I was looking for a good project for our students to explore
and reached out to the Shoalhaven City Council
They were very enthusiastic about the students getting involved,” she says
“It would be mutually beneficial – UC students would gain rich
and the Shoalhaven City Council would generate a greater variety of ideas for their project.”
students travelled to Nowra and spent three days camping along the riverfront
Visiting the site in person and immersing in the local culture provided rich insights into the space
Second-year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) student
realised he had an opportunity to represent the needs of locals
“Shoalhaven is a high-volume tourist destination
and Nowra is often regarded as the ‘Gateway to the Shoalhaven’ but this can leave the community of Nowra feeling forgotten
particularly with regards to development,” Jye says
A former community space along the riverfront
had recently been closed to enable building works on a new highway
Jye noticed how the community were still drawn to the riverfront
“To see the number of people swimming
and just hanging out along the river shocked me
Even with little infrastructure and open space
locals were still utilising the river as the heart of their community,” Jye says
I wanted to create a place where the Shoalhaven community could share in the beauty of their natural environment together.”
providing flexibility for a variety of community uses
He reintroduced measures to repair the health of the local environment
“I focused on the reintroduction of native plant species and the creation of a chain of storm water filtration ponds in an effort to rehabilitate the river
whilst creating a tranquil space for the community,” Jye says
Third year Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Honours) student Dakota Cairnduff discovered that the Nowra riverfront was prone to flooding
Her goal became creating eco-friendly community spaces
that improved mental health and that were resilient to these environmental fluctuations
“I designed a chain of pools that function as water retention
but that could also act as temporary swimming pools,” Dakota says
“I utilised natural plant filtration
and designed boardwalks around the pools so users could walk or sit by.”
students hosted a public exhibition for the community. Their final works addressed everything from ecological concerns
“This was an incredibly valuable project
there is great benefit in working with planning professionals to gain insight into real
They’ve had the opportunity to learn about working with community
and what happens at different government levels
These are all processes and procedures they will encounter in their careers in future
the input of students has been invaluable as they look to the future of the area
“The Nowra Riverfront Precinct is a truly transformative project for our city and will realise our community’s long term vision for a refreshed
activated and engaging riverfront,” said Shoalhaven City Mayor Amanda Findley
“We are thrilled with the range of ideas and quality of the plans presented by the students

Nowra could soon be home to a brand-new electric bus manufacturing facility, with Foton Mobility Distribution planning to build the 6000 square foot centre from late 2025.
The project follows Foton’s recently awarded contract with the NSW government where it is set to deliver 126 battery electric buses that will be built in Nowra and service bus routes across Greater Sydney.
The new facility won’t just be for manufacturing buses, but also set to produce battery electric trucks, as well as hydrogen fuel cell engines, creating around 100 ongoing quality, skilled manufacturing jobs for local workers.
“When the NSW government says we want to build more buses here, we mean it,” transport minister Jo Haylen says.
“Once our partners at Foton get this plant up and running there will be an extra 100 quality manufacturing jobs right here. That’s great news for Nowra and a big boost for NSW manufacturing.
“We want our local manufacturers and suppliers have good opportunities to get involved in building the Zero Emissions Buses that we need. That’s why we have structured our zero-emissions bus program in a way that builds our bus manufacturing capacity for the long term.”
Foton’s bus contract was one of the first bus orders made through the NSW government’s Zero Emission Buses (ZEB) program. GoZero Group owns 50 per cent of Foton Mobility Distribution.
This program is also converting 11 existing bus depots in Greater Sydney to battery electric technology, building a new battery electric depot at Macquarie Park and procuring around 1,200 new electric buses by 2028.
“The offshoring of public transport by the former government was a complete disaster, which is why we’re building these buses here in NSW – creating local jobs and public transport that works,” premier Chris Minns says.
“This state of the art facility in Nowra will create ongoing skilled jobs in regional NSW while also delivering emissions free world class public transport for the people of our state.
“Workers across NSW are great at building public transport like these buses, and under our government they’re building them here again.”
Australasian Bus & Coach (ABC) is the leading bus and coach publication in the region, providing news directly to the local industry. Mark Harbridge has been announced as the man in charge at the new Nowra EV bus facility, overseeing the production of 126 Foton BEV City buses over the next two years.
Taking the role of production manager, Harbridge’s extensive background in asset management for Transdev, CDC NSW and through his own consultancy stand him in good stead for the challenge of managing the production of the EV buses to meet Foton Mobility Distribution’s (FMD) contract with Transport for NSW.
“With experience across Asset Management, Safety and Environment Mark is well equipped to ensure that the EV buses meet the highest standards demanded by the terms of the Contract,” a statement from KRW Hydron reads.
FMD has recently obtained a temporary premises, covering 1900 sqm, which will undergo several weeks of refurbishment and fit-out to prepare it for the arrival of the first batch of chassis and parts in mid-May, and to allow training of the new employees beforehand.
Job adverts will shortly appear for the up to 15 staff required to operate the facility initially.
A DA has been submitted to Shoalhaven City Council by its associate KRW Group for a permanent 6,000sqm EV bus factory that will see the manufacturer produce buses, battery electric trucks and hydrogen fuel cell engines.
The first EV buses are destined to roll out of the interim facility by mid-2025.
Earlier this month, GoZero Group sold its 50 per cent share in FMD to FMD joint owner and CEO Neil Wang and bus industry veteran Scott Riley.
The sale of FMD to Wang and Riley will allow GoZero to instead focus on building towards its goal of being Australia’s largest owned manufacturer of battery electric buses through its Nexport and BusTech brands.
