Vinny's Bread & Wine is a sandwich shop serving delicious freshly made sandwiches on house baked focaccia
By day they sell bread aka sandwiches and by night it turns into a wine bar
Located right near Oatley train station find out what the sandwiches are like and what you have to try when you get there
Mr NQN and I are headed to Vinny's on a Monday at lunchtime
"It's going to be a quick lunch," I promise him
The reason why I chose a Monday was because I wanted to make sure that I got a hold of one of their maritozzi buns
These divine Roman brioche style buns are filled with cream and word was that Vinny's signature salted honey pistachio were amazing
I was worried that they'd disappear fast on weekends so we decided to come on a Monday
The team behind Vinny's are 3 lifelong friends: Simon Nardo
Louis Sobb and Jackson Sobb who grew up in and around Oatley
It was born out of their passion for sandwiches
share plates and wine/spritz and the type of eateries found throughout countries in the Mediterranean
The name Vinny is a persona that fits a bit of all three owners
having fun and being authentic whilst not taking himself too seriously."
Vinny's Bread & Wine has been open since October 2024 and the menu is short and sweet with 8 sandwich choices all for $18 each
The Number One meatball sandwich is a must order for me because I've never met a meatball I didn't like
but I'm also drawn to the Number Four (hot salami
parmesan) and the Number Seven (chicken cotoletta)
And then I see some fresh fig and stracciatella cheese focaccia on the counter and before long I'm ordering $80 worth of bread and buns
The focaccia comes out first - each sandwich is made fresh so you need to wait about 5-10 minutes so this is good to nibble on
There's fresh baked balsamic figs on top of the focaccia and a tear of stracciatella cheese
a bit more sea salt would be great to balance it but the focaccia is soft
Their focaccia has an overnight fermentation using a 90% hydration dough
Mr NQN enjoys a coffee while I go for the strawberry punch which has a good amount of sweetness
I would say that this is more on the dry side of drinks which I like but if you like super sweet you might need to add sugar
The number one has Nonna's meatballs and sauce
basil pesto and shaved parmesan and a salty hit with brown anchovies in their Calabrian chilli sauce that I get in every second or third bite
The meatballs and sauce are soft and luscious and there's a layer of fresh rocket
We added chilli to it which adds another element of flavour
I had all intentions to have just a few bites but I can't stop
I love cotoletta so I bypassed my usual love of spicy cured meats to try the Number Seven with chicken cotoletta
We also add some chilli to it for $2 extra and this sandwich is served warm and toasted
It used to be a Friday and Saturday special but I can see why it got promoted to the main squad
it is flattened a bit so it's slightly easier to eat
Mr NQN is quite taken by this one but I love the number one
But because each sandwich is cut in half it is easy to share them
The brioche buns for these are also baked in house and these buns are big and filled with a generous amount of cream
They keep these at room temperature so that the brioche is soft and tender so that means on a hot day like today the cream is in danger of overspilling and the downy soft brioche barely holds it in
The signature flavour is the salted honey pistachio and I sink my teeth into the bun
It's incredibly soft and pillowy and just collapses in the mouth with every bite
It's very easy to eat half of one and not even notice that it is half gone it is that light
While the salted honey pistachio maritozzi is always available
I couldn't resist buying the Milo maritozzi too
The malted chocolate flavour of the Milo is so utterly moreish I can't pick a favourite out of the two
Some of the past flavours of maritozzi have been: fairy bread
tiramisu and rose water for Valentines day
There's no way we can finish this so we take the leftovers home and there's enough for a quick dinner with dessert
do you go visit places during quieter times or days so that you don't miss out on popular items
Which sandwich would you like out of the two

Oatley West businesses hit by break-insOfficers attached to St George Police Area Command are investigating after reports of several break and enters at businesses along Mulga Road
About ten businesses were broken into around 4am this morning
Mark Coure said he was shocked and disappointed by the break-ins
local businesses run by individuals who have lived and worked in our community for a number of years," Mr Coure said
"I have spoken with the St George Police Area Command to seek an update on the matter and ensure that all available resources have been allocated to make sure that those responsible are brought to justice swiftly."
"At a time when small businesses are doing it tough
"This is a low-act by those responsible and I urge them to find their conscience and turn themselves in
"Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy and many of them give back to the community in so many ways
"As a community it is important we come together to support these affected businesses by shopping local and staying vigilant," Mr Coure said

UPDATED: The Oatley family companies responsible for the operation of Hamilton Island in Queensland have back-paid staff more than $28.1 million
paid a $750,000 fine and have signed an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with the Fair Work Ombudsman
Individual back-payments have ranged from less than $5
The average back-payment has been about $8,000
The companies must also make a combined $750,000 contrition payment
with $500,000 to be paid to the Commonwealth Consolidated Revenue Fund and $250,000 to the not-for-profit Cleaning Accountability Framework
The backpay to 2,152 former and current employees includes superannuation and interest
A further $250,984 will be repaid to 31 employees yet to be found
Workers can use the search function on the FWO’s website to check if amounts are owing to them
the companies have back-paid a total of $28.1 million
including more than $6 million in interest and about $500,000 in superannuation
to current and former staff who were underpaid between December 2014 and December 2022
The EU requires the companies to quantify and rectify staff underpayments since December 2014 by 30 June of this year
Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited (HIE) and Hamilton Island Shared Services Pty Ltd (HISS) management have apologised to those affected by this issue and have contacted current and former employees who were underpaid
Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited (HIE) operates a range of accommodation businesses on Hamilton Island
The Sundays and Hamilton Island Golf Club as well as ancillary businesses including the marina
HIE is also responsible for the public utility services on Hamilton Island and the provision of some emergency services
which is now a separately operated company
and are well-known as the owners of former Sydney-Hobart winner Wild Oats XI
a company controlled by the Oatley family won the bid to acquire 100 per cent of the shares in Hamilton Island
The Australian Financial Review reported Hamilton Island could now be worth around $1 billion
Since the Oatley family purchased the island
they have put $450 million into upgrading its tourism facilities
They contemplated selling the property in 2023 but decided against it
The island hosts five hotel accommodations with an annual occupancy of 75 per cent – the island can host up to 5000 guests
HIE’s wholly owned subsidiary Hamilton Island Shared Services Pty Ltd (HISS) provides support services to HIE for finance
The Fair Work Ombudsman began to investigate the wages and entitlements of salaried staff in 2020
Most of the underpayments were the result of the companies paying many full-time employees annual salaries that were insufficient to cover their minimum Award entitlements
shift-work and work attracting penalty rates
The most common entitlements underpaid included overtime rates
broken-shift allowances and annual leave loading
The large majority of the underpaid staff worked across the range of businesses HIE operates on Hamilton Island
with a smaller number employed by HISS located at HIE’s corporate headquarters in Sydney
Most underpaid workers were covered by the Hospitality Industry (General) Awards 2010 and 2020
with others covered by more than 20 different Awards
Some common roles of underpaid workers included food and beverage supervisors
Fair Work Ombudsman Anna Booth said an EU was an appropriate outcome as the companies had cooperated with the FWO’s investigation and demonstrated a strong commitment to rectifying its non-compliance issues and ensuring future compliance
the companies have committed to rectifying all underpayments they identify in full
and implementing stringent measures to ensure all staff are paid correctly in future,” Booth said
Booth said underpayments resulting from insufficient annual salaries for employees covered by Awards had become a persistent issue among businesses of all sizes across many industries
“Businesses paying annual salaries cannot take a ‘set-and-forget’ approach to paying their workers
Employers must ensure wages being paid are sufficient to cover all minimum lawful entitlements for the hours their employees are actually working,” Booth said
The EU also requires the companies to commission one independent audit of its payments of salaried employees
tabling results to HIE’s Board and reporting the results to the FWO; commission workplace relations training for relevant staff; recruit a Compliance Officer within HIE to monitor its compliance with workplace laws; run a dedicated employee hotline and email address for employees and/or their representatives to make any workplace relations queries; and embed mechanisms that promote consultation with employees and their representatives with results reported to the Board
including running an employee engagement survey and holding employee feedback sessions every three months for the life of the undertaking
Kristy Oatley's most successful dressage horse in her career
Du Soleil was a Hanoverian gelding by De Niro out of Capri Sonne (by Caprimond x Wenzel I x Eisenherz I)
The horse first came into the spotlight when he was owned by Flora Keller and represented Germany at the 2010 World Young Dressage Horse Championships in Verden
Germany under Austrian Saskia Lieben-Seutter
He finished 11th in the 6-year old Finals with 7.82 points
One month later the pair finished 13th in the 6-year old finals at the 2010 Bundeschampionate with a score of 7.40
Right after the Bundeschampionate Du Soleil sold to Sven Rothenberger but the horse was returned to Keller several months later
Lieben-Seutter continued to train him and the duo returned to the arena two years later in 2012 at M and S-level
In 2013 they finished 7th in the Prix St Georges at the CDI Hagen and did two more national shows at small tour level in Walldorf and Elmlohe
In February 2014 Du Soleil sold to Kristy Oatley as a Rio Olympic hopeful
Kristy trained with Sjef Janssen at the time
At the 2017 World Cup FinalsThe new pair made its CDI debut in Deauville in July 2015 at small tour level
before stepping up to Grand Prix at the CDI Maastricht in October of that same year
In 2016 they were Australia's highest scoring combination leading up to the Olympic Games in Rio
where they were 42nd with 68.900% in the Grand Prix
In 2017 they rode the World Cup Finals in Omaha and landed a 6th place with 76.995% in the Kur to Music Finals
In 2018 the pair successfully competed at numerous internationals
before heading to the 2018 World Equestrian Games in Tryon
where they were 12th in the Grand Prix Special with 74.605% (the Kur was cancelled due to weather conditions)
For a time the pair held all three Australian Grand Prix records
In 2019 "Duse" was lightly competed in Pilisjaszfalu and Stuttgart and then had a year off from showing as Kristy was operated on her back
He returned to the ring at the CDI Verden in May 2021
winning the freestyle and did one more show in Zakrzow
In 2022 Oatley and Du Soleil easily captured their Australian team qualification scores for the World Championships Dressage in Herning with 72.526% in Neumunster and winning Wiesbaden with 71.848%

Oatley promptly decided to retire Du Soleil from sport
The horse spent its retirement with Kristy at her barn in Lutjensee near Hamburg
She told Eurodressage two weeks ago that "Duse" unfortunately passed away
"He’s just simply a wonderful horse that has never let me down
we just clicked from the first time I rode him," Kristy said about Duse in 2022

The experimental Adelaide-based artist is hosting a stacked launch party to promote their upcoming album
Adelaide’s own Georgia Oatley creates music that is undeniably strange - this is a good thing
Her music is different from everybody else’s: it pulses
it speaks of weird and wonderful worlds at the tantalising tips of one’s fingertips
The experimental artist released a new track
The name of the single is entirely fitting: listening to it is like being submerged
where everything feels far away and murky and translucent
Oatley’s voice is tender and lilting but still manages to be dynamic
Into The Deep Blue is the latest single off of Georgia Oatley’s upcoming album A Pastoral, which is slated for a February 10th release. The album vinyl (which is a dreamy, translucent pink) is available for preorder now, or will be available to purchase at Oatley’s launch party on February 15th. It is “baby’s first vinyl press” - definitely something to be celebrated.
The album launch is looking to be an electrifying event. Set to take place at The Lab - the immersive, multi-faceted space located just off Light Square - the event promises to be transformative.

The night will close with Oatley, fresh off her successful performance at New Found Sound last weekend, in all her glory.
What better way to spend a temperate February night than by stepping into the weird and wonderful world of Georgia Oatley?
A Washington State University researcher was among a select few scientists who unveiled a national report Wednesday that will shape the future of research and regulation around the genetic modification of cattle
Dr. Jon Oatley, whose extensive research and public appearances have made him a prominent ambassador for the field, was one of four members of a committee of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine who introduced the congressionally mandated report in a public webinar Wednesday
The report’s release followed two years of committee meetings
study and peer review; it details the state of the research on genetically modified food animals
and identifies subjects ripe for future research
“The potential impact of this report is huge,” said Oatley
associate dean for research for the College of Veterinary Medicine and professor at WSU
for what we’re doing in the world of genetic modification of food animals to feed the world in a more sustainable and more secure way
Its impact is going to ripple across the globe.”
Though the report stopped short of declaring absolutely that there is no human health hazard from genetically modified foods
committee members emphasized they believe such foods are safe to eat and noted they would have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration before entering the market
They highlighted several areas where more research is needed
emphasized the importance of continued study of health implications for humans and animals
and called for a study group into consumer attitudes toward the products
As the global population grows — and as the land
water and resources needed to produce food animals shrink — the use of genetic modifications is seen as a crucial tool for feeding people more efficiently and sustainably
The technologies essentially create a high-tech version of selective breeding
which has been used for millennia to improve traits in food animals
by targeting changes in an animal’s DNA that can be passed on to future generations
can be used to breed animals that are more disease resistant
The FDA has approved three lines of genetically modified food animals
including Atlantic salmon that grow faster
cattle whose coats provide more heat tolerance
and pigs modified to avoid a rare food allergy
None are yet on the consumer market.
Oatley was one of 15 experts from institutions all over the country named to the ad hoc committee
formed at the direction of Congress in 2023
His work focuses on creating new traits in pigs and cattle using tools such as CRISPR, and he’s appeared widely in public — from Congress to the Consumer Electronics Show — to promote the benefits of the technology
He has published more than 90 scholarly works in the field, and he was the first academic scientist to be granted investigational food-use authorization by the FDA for human consumption of a gene-edited food animal product — a distinction marked on the WSU campus in Pullman at an event where sausages made from gene-edited pigs were served to the public
Oatley mentioned those sausages during his presentation Wednesday
noting that there was a positive reaction from the public
He said the report will lay the basis for the next stage of development
as more food from genetically modified animals moves toward the consumer market
“That’s the way we’re going to feed people going forward,” he said

Homes NSW is proposing to build the 29 apartments with 14 car spaces on Hardwicke Street
The complex would house people aged 60 and older – mostly women – without access to stable housing
The petition from Hardwicke Street neighbours said the complex would create an influx of residents and cars that would compromise safety and parking
It warned the three-storey block would “loom” over the street’s mostly single- and double-storey houses
threatening the suburb’s “sense of seclusion and tranquillity” and leading to an “unwanted invasion of privacy” that might force many people to “keep blinds or curtains drawn at all times”

NSW Housing Minister Rose jackson said the project would house seniors – particularly women – at risk of homelessness
Coure said residents had contacted him several months ago to express their “genuine concerns” regarding the proposed development’s impact on traffic and nearby infrastructure

The NSW Council of Social Service said there was an estimated shortfall of 221,500 social housing dwellings in the state in 2023-24

The trip-hop/alt-electronic vocalist and producer is at The Lab this month to launch her debut album
A Pastoral is a record born from my relationship to the land
I would trace the shape of the hills with my voice and I think that this sentiment is at the crux of my practice
I’m translating the environment around me with synths
You say your music is tessellating tiles of sound
I have a synaesthetic relationship with sound
I see shapes softly moving in a mathematical pattern
As an electronic producer only using software
it feels significant to have a physical manifestation of the work – something people can invite into their space to become part of their collection
which could later get lost in an op-shop and found by a stranger
It’s also a way to celebrate the album artwork – a beautiful piece by local Tutti artist Jack Hooper

Eighteen years have passed since Jacqui Oatley became the first woman to commentate on Match of the Day
the BBC’s flagship football highlights programme
for someone not even born back then to have learned to drive
The furore around Oatley’s commentary of Fulham’s 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League on April 21
bore no resemblance to Oatley’s introduction to American audiences more than a decade later
first with the 2022 men’s World Cup for Fox before covering the NWSL
“It was an absolute dream doing men’s World Cup for them
because you’re not being assessed by: it’s a female commentator — get back in the kitchen,” she says
“I wouldn’t still be doing it if I was experiencing what I did all those years ago.”
Oatley has taken a break from meetings about the inaugural Festival of Women’s Football Awards
to reflect on what has changed since her first TV commentary in 2007
“What a life experience that was,” she tells The Athletic
I’m actually really proud of that because it would have been so much easier to go: ‘OK
Let’s just kind of hide behind the scenes’.”
She had started that week in 2007 thinking her biggest challenge would be adapting to the nuances of TV commentary
she had honed her craft offering live commentary and reports on radio — the Match of the Day gig would involve an editor clipping Oatley’s 90-minute commentary
into an eight-and-a-half-minute audio package to air over the match footage
Oatley recalls the stomach-drop moment when she realised that she had
become the story — the very thing her journalism training at university had told her not to do
the English newspaper Daily Mail ran a news-in-brief style piece about Oatley’s appointment
Oatley’s radio alarm woke her up at 7am on the Wednesday morning with the sound of Radio 5 Live and the presenter Rachel Burden
introducing vox pops from members of the public who had been asked whether Oatley should be allowed to do it
“I’m sure Rachel thought it was nuts at the time
”My heart sank.” Oatley learned that the Mail had run that day a full-page spread debating the same question
“and that’s when it really grew legs with the sexism element”
Oatley fielded countless messages from journalists across the world who had got in touch with her
either with well wishes or interview requests
and replied to them all personally (with hindsight
that could have waited) as she tried to keep a lid on the madness
One journalist colleague sent word that reporters were “trying to dig into my home life to see if there was any juiciness” — specifically
‘How would that even be a story if that was the case?’
the kind of attachments that people made to women who loved football at the time
Can we just not exist in the same world without being judged in any kind of way?’
let alone had much time to prepare for the commentary in the way she wanted
“My only regret was that I couldn’t be at my best for the most-watched game of my life
I’d love for it all to have stopped and just gone away
that the first few women in any space are so often perceived as representatives of a whole sex: that putting a foot wrong might make it harder for the next ones to follow
“I was really conscious that if I’d commentated and people hated the sound of my voice
or they just didn’t trust me to convey what was going on…” She tails off
pointing out that this was a very different kind of anxiety to doubts over her ability
of which she had none as a woman who had put in the yards as a fan and
Because people do make assessments of an entire gender based on that kind of thing
which is hilarious and ridiculous at the same time.”
felt like “hanging in mid-air with my legs dangling over London and not knowing what to do or how to get down”
That no one would hear it until the evening placed her in a stasis where she couldn’t feel any relief
and 5 Live presenter Phil Williams to arrange a night out and “drink a lot of vodka to make it possible to deal with the final thing”
who called reassurances from the living room as Oatley listened and decided her efforts “didn’t sound too horrendous
Knowingly, the Match of the Day presenter, Gary Lineker, introduced Oatley’s segment with the words: “After all the publicity this week
the moment has finally come for a little piece of history on Match of the Day
Lawrie Sanchez took charge of his Fulham side at Craven Cottage
There are scores of female commentators now
and Oatley loves the moment “when I hear somebody and I don’t know who they are” because it indicates not only a growing pool but that football has moved on from making these women the story
brings new challenges for the next generation
more so when broadcasters’ attempts to diversify their talent become drawn into a broader culture war
Oatley muses whether social media might also have helped her
familiarising her would-be critics with her credentials
She doubts that the backlash came from listeners familiar with her radio work
she’s been around for years and she’s done this and she’s done that
and actually her credentials are not any different to a male’,” Oatley says
I could have put one post out there and maybe set the record straight on a couple of things on the inaccuracies
Oatley has learned in the interim about “how to survive in this industry
Oatley lived on her own in a flat; by definition
nobody else had been Match of the Day’s first female commentator
“So there wasn’t anybody that I could find and say: ‘OK
I was navigating the situation by myself.”
she was among the founding members of the Women in Football (WIF) network
with the organisation formed partly “in light of that craziness” Oatley had endured
the plan had been to assemble a network of like-minded people from different parts of industry: agents
executives who had weathered their own storms in silos as the only women in their workplaces
When the talk moved from emotional support to event planning
were “really wary about housing us or accommodating us because they didn’t want to be seen to be enabling women in football
but it’s very much changed.” WIF has evolved into a more sophisticated body now
offering legal advice and running leadership courses
Oatley describes her younger self as “marked
“isolated” and without any inkling of “what to do or how to handle it
I felt so strongly that I don’t want other people to experience that
And even though they’re not going to on that scale
I still understand that feeling of: ‘I’d love to commentate
Who can put me in contact with people who can give me experience?’.”
Oatley talks enthusiastically of her desire to help other women
She is free with her phone number when aspiring sports journalists get in touch
The prejudice that we experienced all those years ago has not gone away entirely.”
Oatley became the first female to offer play-by-play commentary of a World Cup match in the United States
“I’d forgotten about that,” Oatley admits — a sign
of how far removed she felt from 18 years earlier and a week she will always remember
has received the ride on two of Gert Saborowski's horses
Oatley welcomed Grand Prix mare Feldrose and small tour horse Don Domingo
Saborowski used to work with Finnish Olympian Emma Kanerva but they went separate ways last summer and Saborowski's horses have been rehomed
The 13-year old Hanoverian mare Feldrose (by Feuerspiel x Latimer) is bred by Burkhard Wahler and was first shown
Lena Bammel before selling to Saborowski for 270,000 euro at the 2016 Klosterhof Medingen auction
In 2017 Vivien Grabowski showed the mare once before Emma Kanerva took over and produced her to international Grand Prix level
They rode the burgpokal qualifiers in 2020 and the louisdor cup qualifiers in 2021
They finished 12th in the 2021 Louisdor Cup Finals
The mare's international Grand Prix debut was in Troisdorf in April 2022 and in 2023 she showed in Aachen Festival 4 Dressage
Feldrose was a back-up horse for Emma's number one
Rose Oatley debuted Feldrose at the local show in Scharnebeck on 19 April and won the S*** class with 73.728%
They are scheduled to make their CDI debut in Mannheim in two weeks
Rose also welcomed Saborowski's Don Domingo into the barn
an 11-year old Hanoverian by Dimaggio x Don Davidoff
Kanerva on Don DomingoHe was first shown in 2018 by Ulrike Hatzl
while in 2019 it was Alaro Osborne Diez on board and in 2020 Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn showed him
Kanerva premiered him in 2022 at small tour level
In 2023 they focused on the Burgpokal qualifiers and finished 6th in the 2023 Nurnberger Burgpokal Finals in Frankfurt
Oatley debuted Don Domingo at the Preis der Besten qualifier in Hagen on 4 - 6 April 2025 at young riders level. The pair has been nominated for the Preis der Besten in Warendorf
the first round of the German team selections for the European Youth Championships next summer
"Very excited to have just these two horses at the moment from Gert," Rose told Eurodressage
"We have a cooperation with him that we are campaigning the horses."
Saborowski's 13-year old Oldenburg bred Grand Prix horse Mist of Titanium (by Millennium x Diamonit) has found a new rider in Manuel Bammel
The new duo made its show debut at the local show in Stubben-Brunshausen

and local business owners outside the Beverly Hills Commuter Carpark.Oatley MP Mark Coure has called on the NSW Government to introduce free
timed parking at the newly constructed Beverly Hills Commuter Carpark to support local businesses and residents
Mr Coure said that while the state-of-the-art facility is a major boost for commuters in the region
more must be done to ensure it also benefits the wider community
"The new Beverly Hills Commuter Carpark is a fantastic addition to our area
particularly those visiting nearby shops and restaurants
"In order to support small businesses doing it tough
we need to ensure customers can access convenient
free parking close to the commercial strip."
Mr Coure has formally written to the Minister for Transport requesting free parking on the lower levels of the carpark and three hours of free parking on all levels of the carpark
"I've spoken to local business owners and it is clear that they are struggling
It is already difficult to find parking in Beverly Hills on the best of days," Mr Coure said
commonsense measures that will ease the burden on families and help revitalise foot traffic for local businesses
"I urge the Government to take immediate action to ensure this vital piece of infrastructure benefits the whole Beverly Hills community," he said
Mr Coure launched a petition in 2022 to bring a new commuter carpark to Beverly Hills
Located at Edgbaston Road adjacent to the railway corridor
approximately 70 metres south west of Beverly Hills Station
the new 200 space car park was opened by Mr Coure late last year and operate under Transport Park and Ride to be accessed by Opal card operated boom gates

Picture supplied.Ongoing dumping of asbestos at Oatley Point Reserve has prompted a Georges River resident to call for the installation of cameras in the area to catch illegal dumpers
The resident contacted Oatley MP Mark Coure this week to report the latest incident in the dumping of asbestos and building waste at Oatley Point Reserve at the bottom of Herbert Street
"We are now getting a weekly dumping of asbestos and building debris in the public car park of Oatley Point Reserve and it is a direct health hazard to the community," the resident said
"The reserve is completely overgrown with weeds now
and it obviously acts as a green light to illegal dumpers."
The resident is requesting to have lighting or cameras installed to catch the dumpers
or have the car park chained-off at night
Mr Coure has written to Georges River Council following the latest incident of illegal dumping
"The resident noted that there has been weekly dumping of asbestos and building debris in the public carpark of Oatley Point Reserve
"The asbestos has now been removed but our office and Council are keeping a close eye on it and we will make further representations if necessary," a spokesman for Mr Coure said
The maximum penalties for illegal dumping of asbestos in NSW is $2 million for corporations and $500,000 for individuals
of one event of illegally dumped waste at Oatley Point Reserve in the last four weeks
"In undertaking an initial review of the matter
it does not appear that the illegally dumped waste in Oatley Point Reserve contains asbestos
An inspection by a Council Officer is required to confirm the nature of the waste."
2024 said there had been 3,302 reported cases of illegal dumping in the Georges River local government area since January 2023
diverting ratepayers' funds from other community services
Illegal dumping poses serious health risks and may attract pests or create mosquito breeding grounds
and decreases property values in affected areas
To combat the problem Georges River Council launched a new campaign to tackle the growing issue of illegal dumping
The campaign aims to raise awareness about the severe impacts of illegal dumping on the community and environment
It targets hotspot areas across the Georges River area and encourages residents to report incidents of illegal dumping through Council's online request form
It is an offence to litter or illegally dump waste under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997
Individuals or corporations caught illegally dumping can face expensive fines of up to $15,000 and/or prison sentences
Rose Oatley's German junior team ride in 2022 and a popular breeding stallion
Veneno was a 2011 born Westfalian stallion by Vitalis out of Diamond Lady (by Diamond Hit x Landadel x Argentinus)
Veneno was first licensed at the 2014 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing in Vechta and he did his 30-day suitability test in Schlieckau in November 2015
scoring 8.26 for dressage and 7.20 for show jumping
The chestnut stood up for stud for one season in 2015 and sired no less than 6 licensed offspring in Germany
It was a remarkable feat for such a young stallion who did not bred to a big amounts of mares
Veneno came back up for stud in 2024 for one season until the end of June when he was brought back home due to an injury
Veneno was purchased as a young stallion by Anemone Samyn of HC Stables in Belgium from Helgstrand in Denmark
who bought the stallion for 310,000 euro at the 2014 Oldenburg Stallion Licensing
Samyn allocated the ride on Veneno to Anna Sophie Fiebelkorn
The pair won bronze at the 2015 Westfalian Young Horse Championships and finished 6th at the Bundeschampionate
Samyn then ended her collaboration with Fiebelkorn and the stallion moved barns a few times
then to Belgium and finally back to Germany to find continuity again with Beatrice Buchwald in 2017
The new duo first competed in Langenfeld in July 2017
They did a couple of shows at developing Prix St Georges level in 2018 and competed a bit more in 2019 in the Nurnberger Burgpokal qualifiers in Bettenrode and Dorsten
Their last show was Dorsten in September 2019
who invested massively in expensive auction horses in Germany almost ten years ago
She sold the Oldenburg licensing champion Bonds to Buchwald
has shipped Furst William again to Denmark to be sold (second attempt)
Veneno sold to Kirsty Oatley as a rising Grand Prix hope in February 2020 but he became Rose Oatley's junior rider horse
Kristy and Rose Oatley with VenenoKristy made her show debut on him in November 2011 in Schenefeld in the Intermediaire II
in 2022 Rose Oatley competed him at junior rider's level and the stallion got selected as her direct reserve horse to her number one
for the 2022 European Junior Riders Championships in Hartpury
Due to a hoof abscess Veneno substituted for Rock Revolution
He finished 7th in the team tst (73.303%) and won team gold with Germany
In the individual they were 32nd with 67.735%
Hartpury was the pair's last international. Rose competed Veneno nationally through 2023 both a junior and S/Young Riders level. They showed at the 2023 Preis der Besten but new horse Sommernacht took over the baton as number one
Their last show was in Verden in December 2023
Unfortunately the 13-year old stallion passed away last week
"We are absolutely heart broken," Kristy told Eurodressage
Australian Olympian Lyndal Oatley said goodbye to her career starting international Grand Prix horse Potifar
Potifar was a 1997 born Dutch warmblood gelding by Jazz out of Mirthe (by Pion x Urban)
He was discovered as a 3-year old by Norwegian Anett Kristin Olsen
She qualified for the 2003 World Young Horse Championships with him but did not compete him there
Olsen trained with Kyra Kyrklund and produced the horse to Grand Prix level
They made their international debut at the 2006 CDI Oslo and also rode in Flyinge that year
Hartpury and Hickstead before heading to the European Championships in Turin
where they scoed 61.417% in the Grand Prix for 53rd place
At the 2010 World Equestrian GamesThe horse came in training with Patrik Kittel
While he was off to compete at the 2008 Olympic Games
began riding Potifar and there was a match
Carol and Sandy Oatley bought the bright bay gelding for Lyndal and he became her career starting Grand Prix horse
They premiered at the 2009 CDI Hagen and rode in Wiesbaden
In 2010 he put her for the first time on the Australian team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Kentucky
where they were 46th in the Grand Prix with 65.574%
In 2011 they helped secured Australia's Olympic team place by winning the Regional Olympic qualifier in Ermelo
Their last CDI together was the CDI Bremen in February 2012
Potifar was retired from competition sport at age 15
Lyndal and Potifar in 2010"Sadly Cushings Disease and Allergies halted his career and he lived his days with Patrik’s and my oldies here with us," said Lyndal
"After losing his best mate a few months ago at the age of 28
Pot never really bounced back from his loss and it was time to let him join his best mate."
"Pot" was instrumental in Lyndal's career as a high performance athlete
"With him you had to throw away the rule book and purely react and focus on him … and I am so thankful for that as to this day my lack of nerves is thanks to him
cheeky and affectionate with the loudest snore you have ever heard
Pot was my first championship horse taking me to Kentucky in 2010
He was also instrumental in securing Austalia’s team placing for the London Games producing arguably our best test ever for a 71%."
"whilst there is a huge hole left by both my special boys
I find some peace that are together and lived their lives to the full."

has parked his car on the driveway outside his Oatley home without any trouble
who has 16 stents in his abdomen and one stent in his heart
needs to be able to park close to his home
his carport is on Wonoona Parade West and it usually has two cars - his wife's and his grandson's - parked in it
so he often parks on the council-owned part of his driveway or on the grass verge
But last August he was fined twice by Georges River Council
for parking on the driveway and for impeding pedestrian traffic
"I've parked on the driveway for 53 years and this was the first time I've been pinged," he said
I've parked on the driveway for so long there is a permanent white mark on the concrete from where my car has been."
Mr MacRae said there was nowhere else to park at the time due to an increase in the number of commuters parking in his street
Last week he asked the Georges River Council's Environment and Planning Committee to consider installing 'Residents Only' parking signs in his street
"Since Oatley Railway Station has become a critical hub for rail commuters
there has been parking by commuters outside our properties from 6am to 7pm
This is depriving residents parking spaces outside their properties
leaving us with nowhere to park except hundreds of metres away from our homes
Many of my neighbours have medical disabilities and are unable to walk long distances
"I have been parking in my driveway for 53 years and these parking fines have caused me a lot of anxiety
so much so that I was hospitalised last week for tests to check my heart
"All I want was to be able to park on the driveway or the verge as I always have
The main issue is someone with a disability not being able to walk too far
I hope the council will consider our plight and either put up 'Residents Only' signs or give special dispensation for us residents to park in our driveways or on the grass verge
also asked the council to allow parking on local streets such as Wonoona Parade West for residents only
on the vehicular driveways on broader footpaths sections between the kerb and the concrete footpaths
A Georges River Council spokesperson said that before an approved parking permit area can be established
This is outlined in the Resident Parking Permit Scheme Policy and the Transport for NSW Permit Parking Guidelines
- There must be high demand for parking in the area
whereby an audit concludes that demand for parking likely exceeds 85 per cent of on-street parking capacity on a daily basis;
- There is inadequate off-street parking and no potential to modify premises or create off-street parking in the area; and
- There is little or no unrestricted on-street parking near the relevant area
"Waratah Street Oatley unfortunately does not qualify under this eligibility list
Council currently has no plans to introduce a Residential Parking Permit Scheme in this area as off-street parking is available to most of the Waratah Street dwellings," a council spokesperson said
Mr MacRae went to Oatley MP Mark Coure who wrote to NSW Finance Minister Courtney Houssos
She cancelled the second fine as Mr MacRae would not have had sufficient time to able to correct his behaviour before the second fine was issued
A letter from Ms Hossous's office noted that Mr MacRae has been parking in his own driveway for over 40 years
"There are no exemptions for property owners to stop across their own driveway
is a safety issue as it stops emergency services from having easy access to the property should they need to," the letter said
Mr MacRae said there was plenty of space for pedestrians to walk around his car and for emergency services to access his property
He thanked the Minister for cancelling the second fine
"I'm paying off the other one out of my pension," he said
The yachtie grandson of the late sailing winemaker Bob Oatley has sold his Avalon Beach trophy home for just under $10m after seven years at the Pittwater property
Daniel Oatley was reportedly the first of the famous seafaring family to ride Wild Oats XI in the Sydney to Hobart race in 2016 and a year later bought the Paradise Ave waterfront residence — complete with private jetty and entertainer’s boat house — for $4.6m
Throughout its most recent sales campaign
LJ Hooker Palm Beach team Jono Gosselin and Peter Robinson were quoting $9.5m for the three-bedroom home on 1080sq m
Reality TV star’s weird unit up for rent
the home comes with a private jetty and boathouse
Open-plan living areas lead to the terrace
Although Robinson was not prepared to discuss price
he confirmed the sale had a positive outcome
“We had a good campaign and today there’s a happy buyer and a very happy vendor,” he said
It is believed the new owner is no stranger to the peninsula having previously held property in the area
The Oatley family fortune was made when patriarch Bob sold Rosemount Wine to Southcorp in 2001 for a rumoured $1.5b
He was also responsible for the reboot of tourist hot spot Hamilton Island which he bought for $200m in 2003
in Hobart after steering Wild Oats across the line in 2018
Covid ‘masterpiece’ sells for $40m
The family had reportedly toyed with selling the popular holiday destination for as much as $1b last year
however shelved plans after a strategic review by UBS suggested the sale could linger with only a small pool of possible buyers
Another notch in the Oatley family’s belt is as owners of the nine-time Sydney-Hobart-winning yacht Wild Oats XI
the Paradise Ave residence was the home of music-industry executive Tim Prescott and his interior designer wife Frances Georgeson who has worked with the likes of Pink
The pair had lived at the property since 2011
the three-storey deep waterfront dwelling is unsurprisingly decorated in nautical themes and features two living spaces with two decks
three bedrooms including a large main with an ensuite
It sits only minutes from Paradise Beach and is within walking distance of Avalon Sailing Club
The Oatley family still retains the historic Finisterre waterfront mansion in nearby Stokes Point
which they bought in 2002 for a then recording-breaking $20m

through the Star* Scheme looks to provide practical support and role modelling so that young people and families can break away from a potential negative life trajectory.Oatley is the first rugby club in Australia to partner with the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation (NSW PRF) and the * Scheme to implement a new program aimed at transforming the lives of disadvantaged young people
The scheme identifies children who have experienced Adverse Childhood Experiences and brings them into a trained environment which will support and nurture their development away from negative life trajectories
The Star* Scheme is already well-entrenched in the British rugby community
"The scheme involves looking past just the players and winning but delves deeper into personal and emotional support," Oatley Rugby Club Director Ross Bernays said
"This initiative highlights the influence that the sporting family can have on those at the edges of our community," he said
The Star* Scheme looks to provide practical support and role modelling so that young people who have experienced a difficult start in life can grow into confident
healthy people who are less likely to fall into life's pitfalls
"The Star* Scheme will assist our Club in identifying
children and families that will benefit by involvement in organised sport in a caring and positive environment." Mr Bernays said
"Existing players will also benefit from the Club's implementation of the Star* Scheme."
The Star* Scheme provides training for key people in the Club to understand the effects of ACE's on future development and the supportive influences that help these children and families break away from a potential negative life trajectory
"Our club is extremely excited to expand our focus by introducing the Star Scheme to support vulnerable people in our community achieve positive life outcomes through rugby
"The Star* Scheme compliments Oatley's broader 'leave no one behind' philosophy
"While Oatley is the first to implement the Star* Scheme
it will not be long until there are hundreds of children across NSW benefitting from the support NSW PRF
Star* Scheme and rugby clubs can provide in transforming their lives."
said,"I am really delighted that Oatley is the first rugby club in Australia to partner with NSW PRF and Star* Scheme
"It is the start of transforming the lives of young people in their community who have experienced multiple ACEs
I would like to thank Oatley and NSW PRF and our team at Star for their commitment to making this work."
Oatley Rugby Club also thanked Lugarno Lions Club in coming on board as a seed sponsor to enable the Star* Scheme to get off the ground

Team Germany and German riders Rose Oatley and Marie Sohler became the winners of the three gold medals up for grabs at the 2024 European Junior Riders Championships held at Sentower Park in Opglabbeek
Sentower Park provided outstanding conditions for this combined Europeans which featured the Championships also for the pony and children riders
the event became a celebration of youth sport with the hopes that the venue will re-apply with the FEI for another European Dressage championships soon
Rose Oatley and SommernachtSixty-seven combinations contested the team competition with no less than 15 countries represented
There was no doubt about the superiority of the German junior team
the Germans were so far in the lead that the performance of the fourth rider no longer mattered for their winning team score
and Van Twist saw the winning ride in Rose Oatley's performance aboard the 9-year old Oldenburg mare Sommernacht (by Rocco Granata x San Remo)
The mare has three outstanding basic gaits
but dealt with quite a bit of tension throughout the test
the mare blowked in the walk pirouettes and lost the clarity and also the canter work was ridden under high voltage
and the mare easily achieves overtrack in the trot lengthenings
with all judges putting her first unanimously
Maria Teresa Pohl on Lennox U.S.Germany's winning team score of 223.696 points was further built up with the results of Maria Teresa Pohl (3rd with 73.636%) and Marie Sohler (4th with 73.333%)
Germany's drop score was 72.758% riddeb by Alix von Borries on Feingefuhl (by Furstenball x Farewell)
The latter rode convincing movements but the mare often gaped
Maria Teresa Pohl saddles the 8-year old KWPN stallion Lennox US (by Grand Galaxy Win x Rousseau) rode a strong test with the proper bending on the voltes
In the extended walk the horse could march a bit more and the left walk pirouette was better than the right one
but overall the rider needed to have kept the hands more quiet instead shaking the bit in the mouth
Marie Sohler and the 8-year old Oldenburg stallion Global Player (by Grand Galaxy Win x Don Schufro) rode lovely trot extensions
but at times the trot work was a bit too floaty/passagey and the horse lost the rhythm in the left volte. The four flying changes were big but one was croup high
lacking the polishes execution of riding corners
and there could have been a higher degree of preparation in the different exercises
Sohler had the high score in the first group of team test riders that went on Wednesday
but her individual scores showed a significant spread from 71.970% to 74.394%
Silver for Denmark: chef d'equipe Jeannett Andreassen
Anna Teibel RabenThe Danish team were back on the silver step of the podium at this year's Europeans with 216.122 points
The team surprise ride coming from newcomer Anna Teibel Raben aboard the 7-year old Danish gelding Sparaday (by Torveslettens Spartacus x Don Frederic)
Raben came out of nowhere to ride her first international show ever in May 2024 on a different horse (Quickstar) to then head to the Danish team selection trial at the CDIO-JR Hagen in June with Sparaday
In Opglabbeek the combination was second in the team test with a score of 73.909%
The dark bay horse loudly ground its teeth but produced good trot extensions and had a good V-moment in the rhythm in the extended walk
The horse was fluent and balanced in the lateral movements and voltes
The flying changes to the right were excellent
but the first change to the left seemed in two phases although only two judges scored it 6.5 and the others between 7 and 8
The extended canter was powerful but the end halt wide behind
Clara Cordes ArnkjaerDenmark's second best score was 71.970% ridden by another team rookie
Clara Cordes Arnkjaer on the 12-year old Danish mare Brianna (by Bogegardens Boney M x Romancier)
The pair excelled in the quiet contact in the bridle
There was a good cadence in trot but a slight loss of rhythm in the shoulder-in right
However the walk became lateral before the right walk pirouette
In the canter half pass right the mare dropped a bit on the forehand
Denmark's third score was 70.243% ridden by Michella Skovsager aboard the 11-year old Blue Hors Zampalo (by Zack x Brentano II)
but the horse is not equally elastic on both reins with the bending and flexion to the left more stiff
Zampalo generated much overtrack in the extended walk but there was a loss of activity in the walk pirouette left and the horse got slower in the rhythm
Bravio BiancoDenmark's drop score was 67,455% ridden by more experienced team rider Josephine Gert Nielsen on her 9-year old Hanoverian Bravio Bianco (by Belantis x De Niro)
The trot off after the halt at entry was not on the aid and overall in the trot work the horse needs to be more on the hindquarters and up in the bridle
The horse is soft-footed in the extended walk but the front and hindquarters do not seem so connected
but there was a hiccup in the third flying change
After a "desasterous" year in 2023 in which the Dutch team
which usually ends up on the podium in the youth divisions
Team Orange bounced back in a big way and bagged bronze with 214.364 points
WesterinkHolland's best scoring rider in the team test was Yasmin Westerink aboard the 12-year old Oldenburg Amphitryon (by Ampere x Rosario) with an 8th place on 71.667%
The trot work was very scopey and uphill with lift in the forequarters
The pair rode smooth voltes and a shoulder in right
In between the walk pirouettes there was a slight loss of the rhythm
Overall the contact with the bridle was strong and the horse's mouth appeared lathered in sugar
The extended canter was big and off the ground
Esmee Boers and the 9-year old KWPN mare Kiki G (by Vivaldi x Rousseau) was right behind her team mate in 9th place with 71.515%
The athletic bay mare is a clear leg mover
The extended walk had two hooves overstep
but was rather 'stomping' in its leg technique
The half pass right was better in rhythm and regularity than the left one
The four flying changes all worked out and the highlight of the ride was probably the very quiet
Morgan Walraven on BeneciaHolland's third score was ridden by Morgan Walraven aboard the 8-year old Westfalian mare Benecia (by Benicio x Londonderry) with 71.182% and a 10th place
The trot work had much cadence and suspension and this mare showed lots of freedom in the shoulder
There was a break in the rhythm in the shoulder in right
In the extended walk she marched well with two hooves overtrack
The second flying change was in two phases but only two judges saw that and scored it appropriately
Holland's scratch score was 69.879% ridden by Dominique van Dalsen aboard the 10-year old KWPN gelding Just Johnson (by Johnson x Florencio)
The trot work was very up tempo and energetic
There was too much angle in the shoulder in right and the extended walk did not have the most generous overtrack
Van Dalsen rode the horse with the pedal to the mettle
The horse was not very happy with that and looked a bit sour
but he did produce four impressive flying changes
Myles Graham on Nibeley Union HitThe highest ranked non-team medal winner was Brit Myles Graham aboard the 17-year old British bred Nibeley Union Hit (by Nibeley Union Jack x Sandro Hit)
He finished sixth with 72.182% The dark bay mare is not a flashy mover but was presented so beautifully and when it comes to "real dressage" they gave a masterclass of how junior riders should present horses
the horse was elastic in the contact and the halt for rein back was outstanding
even though the horse does not have the biggest overstep
The left walk pirouette was better than the right one
This ride could have scored much higher as it displayed proper dressage training
compared to higher ranked riders on better moving horses
For German-Australian born Rose Oatley the 2024 Europeans was a mirror scenario to 2023 in Kronberg
where she won the team and individual test
but dropped off the podium in the Kur to fourth place
Anna Teibel Rabe on SparadayThe individual test podium featured two Germans and one Dutch rider
Rose Oatley and Sommernacht topped the board with a whopping 77.147% score
The silver medal went to Marie Sohler and Global Player with 74.706%
Germany's team newcomer picked up her first individual silver medal in her career
She trains with the Werndls in Aubenhausen
had Sebastian Heinze and Hans-Heinrich Meyer zu Strohen by her side
The bronze went to Dutch Yasmin Westerink and Amphitryon who scored 73.735%
She trains with Dutch Olympic medal winner Adelinde Cornelissen
The individual test concluded on Saturday and in the end seven riders were eliminated
reducing the final ranking to 59 competitors having completed the second test
could not cope with the pressure and dropped to 21st place in the individual test (68.188%) and did not make it to the freestyle
Marie Sohler on Global PlayerThe 2024 European Championships in Opglabbeek concluded with the junior Kur to Music finals
Sohler and Gobal Player topped the board for kur gold with 77.920%
She ranked first with three judges and two had her second
The marks ranged between 76.025% and 79.125%
Global Player is a licensed stallion which won the 20222 World Young Horse Championships under Eva Möller and silver at the 2022 WCYH under Leonie Richter
Yasmin Westerink was able to climb the ladder and added a silver to her tally
Aboard Amphitryon she posted 76.795% for a second place in the freestyle
She placed first with the Dutch judge (78.125%)
Her low score was 75.375% from the French judge
Alix von Borries on FeingefuhlThe bronze went to German Alix von Borries on Feingefühl with a total of 76.400%
She ranked between first and fifth place on marks going from 77.00% to 74.875%
The Oatley RSL Sub-branch was formed on August 23
1944 but its origins go back to World War I
This was when the original Mortdale-Oatley RSL Sub-branch was formed in 1915 by a group of WWI diggers
the Mortdale veterans decided they wanted the area's own dedicated sub-branch due to the suburb's population growth
The sub-branch split in 1944 and Oatley-based veterans decided to form their own RSL sub-branch
"Oatley lost its sub-branch charter and had to apply to RSL headquarters for a new charter," Oatley RSL Sub-branch historian
"This was granted in 1944 and the sub-branch purchased land in Letitia Street and then the old theatre next door which is now a gymnasium
"After World War II the clubhouse was built by the Oatley sub-branch members with material they gained from different contractors free-of-charge
"They built the community club which was burnt-out in the mid-1980s and so had to be rebuilt
Since then the community club has grown in popularity and membership."
But it hasn't been the same story for the sub-branch
"The sub-branch now only has about 50 members," said Mr Wright who is a Vietnam veteran
"We only have one WWII veteran and he is aged 102
"We are Vietnam and Korean War and National Service veterans
people who used to live here and have moved
"We are trying to attract new members and have had about five join in the last 12 months
"Last Anzac Day we met much younger veterans who attended our Sunday Anzac Memorial service
They usually went to the Bondi service and didn't realise we had a sub-branch at Oatley
"Hopefully they will join us on Anzac Day in the future
We are looking for the next generation of young veterans."
Mr Wright said that RSL Sub-branch membership has many benefits but the best of all is friendship
"The Sub-branch members all get on well together," he said
There is an RSL sailing group that some of our members enjoy on Sydney Harbour
If you want a hand they will come and help
"The 80th anniversary is important to us," Mr Wright said
"We are all getting a bit long in the tooth to celebrate many more
People are welcome to come along and join us and discover the same camaraderie that we have all enjoyed."
The 80th anniversary of the Oatley RSL Sub-branch will be celebrated with a luncheon at the Oatley RSL Community Club on Sunday

Washington State University’s worldwide efforts to use advanced gene-editing techniques in livestock to improve productivity and food security were recently showcased during the largest consumer technology trade convention of the year
a professor and associate dean of research in WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine
was one of three speakers invited to participate in a panel discussion titled “Pink pineapples and pitless cherries: Gene-editing and the future farm” during the annual conference in early January in Las Vegas
The convention featured 4,500 exhibitors and more than 140,000 attendees
“This was a huge platform to showcase the research we are doing here at WSU and in the College of Veterinary Medicine,” Oatley said
“I was invited to participate because of the reputation we have built at WSU in gene editing and food animals and our efforts to create food security for the growing global population
The science we are doing has huge potential to impact the world directly.”
The science we are doing has huge potential to impact the world directly
The panel featured two additional speakers who focused on gene editing in crops
while Oatley spoke about advancements in livestock
Oatley is renowned for his work in gene-editing technologies and his research efforts on genetic innovations in livestock to address the growing demand for sustainable food production
He highlighted how WSU is at the forefront of developing gene-editing strategies for food animals to make them more resilient to infectious diseases and environmental changes
while also improving animal welfare and reproductive efficiency
The panel also explored the public perception of gene editing in food production
which Oatley described as less contentious than some might expect
Oatley pointed to his own research using the gene-editing tool CRISPR to improve genetic traits in livestock. In 2023, he and WSU received U.S. Food and Drug Administration investigational authorization to have five gene-edited pigs enter the food chain for human consumption
he has continued to work toward a full FDA approval
Oatley said negative comments from the pubic have been limited
“Most people aren’t as concerned with gene editing in production as the vocal minority that often speaks out about how food is produced.”
Oatley and the panel also discussed regulatory challenges
and globally were designed years ago and have not kept pace with scientific advancements like gene editing
can act as barriers to commercialization and advancements
In addition to providing a platform to promote WSU’s research
the convention also put Oatley face to face with industry leaders
which could open doors to future opportunities for collaboration
“Making those connections to the private sector and the industry is really important,” Oatley said
“Even though I’m there representing an academic institution
I’m still talking about research and development and the things that we’re doing that would have commercial appeal down the line.”

Rag traders Steven and Carol Moss have finally found just the right downsizer digs to replace their Scottish baronial mansion
that they sold 18 months ago for a record $130 million
In the year since tech billionaire Scott Farquhar and his investment banker wife Kim Jackson took the keys to the country’s most expensive house
the Mosses had been expected to move to an apartment

But it seems they’ll be downsizing to a house instead
having purchased the Bellevue Hill designer digs of Anthony Tzaneros
and interior designer Poppy O’Neil Tzaneros
The Mosses seem to have all the real estate luck
Their new home would be a relative bargain judging by the discount it copped since it was initially listed for sale late last year for $18 million
Poppy and Anthony Tzaneros at their society wedding in 2020
Multiple sources say the Mosses have paid between $14 million and $14.5 million
although the result remains undisclosed by TRG’s Gavin Rubinstein
At least it scored a few superlatives in its favour when described by Rubinstein to his Instagram followers: “One of the highest quality finished
most elegantly designed properties Bellevue Hill has ever seen”
Having purchased what was a two-storey house in 2021 for $7.45 million when they married
it was gutted and reconfigured into a three-storey house with formal and informal living areas
high-end finishes throughout and a new infinity swimming pool
It was listed last year with other agents before TRG took over the listing recently
and marketing for the property quietly slipped property websites this week

NSW (13 February 2023) A stunning waterfront property in tightly held Algernon Street Oatley
complete with a historic boat house where the famed Australian author John O’Grady penned his bestselling novel
“They’re a Weird Mob” in 1957
has hit the market for the first time since 1990
According to the selling agent John Pucak Principal of Raine & Horne Oatley, the historic property at 68 Algernon Street, Oatley
is located on 1,400 square metres of waterfront land and is expected to sell by private treaty for well above the current record Oatley house price of $4.8 million.
“Mr O’Grady lived in the property until he died in 1981
while the current owner Mr Pacini bought it in 1990
since adding significant improvements to the house.”
who paid less than $400,000 for the house in 1990
and Mr Pucak expects an upgrader will snap up the home located on one of Oatley’s premier streets.
“The buyer will be an upgrader with a growing family who is seeking a waterfront property in a tightly held location
but that is still close to Oatley railway station so the kids can easily get to school and university,” he said.
“I believe the buyer could be seeking a waterfront property in Blakehurst
Kangaroo Point or even Mosman on the North Shore right now or a terrace-style house in Haberfield. This property will put Oatley waterfronts on their radar
“What buyers from the Lower North Shore
Eastern Suburbs and the Inner West are increasingly recognising is that in Oatley
they can deliver better bang for buck with more water views
and fantastic local amenities in a suburb that is just 30 minutes to the city.
“The buyers might also be a little older and remember the movie or read the book They’re a Weird Mob and had a chuckle that the property where the idea for Nino Culotta crystalised is now up for grabs.”
More to stunning Oatley property than literary history
the three-bathroom property is on one of Oatley’s most sought-after streets
the improvements since 1990 to the house give it a style associated more with an inner-city multi-level Federation terrace house.
“But this property offers so much more than a standard terrace for a potential buyer with its knockout views of the Georges River from Blakehurst to Como that is enjoyed from two large entertaining balconies
These views are the best in the St George area,” said Mr Pucak.
“The main house offers four generous-sized bedrooms
a magnificent modern kitchen with modern appliances and fittings and multiple living areas
“The main house also has a magnificent swimming pool with water features sheltered from the elements by a massive glass rotunda.”
where John O’Grady wrote another book in the Nino Culotta series “Gone Fishin” in 1962
was built in the 1880s and predated the main house
“The boathouse offers a magnificent fireplace
bathroom and a separate living room and kitchen and would work perfectly as a home office for an entrepreneur or senior executive,” Mr Pucak said.
Mr Pucak said he is thrilled the vendor has appointed him to sell the stunning Oatley waterfront
“I love talking about the history associated with the property and would love to break the house price record for Oatley.”
Using the pen name of “Nino Culotta”
the name of the main character of the novel
Mr O’Grady in “They’re a Weird Mob” tells the fictionalised story of the struggles of an Italian migrant journalist arriving in Sydney and attempting to navigate his way through 1950s Australian society.
The famous 1966 film of the same name famously starred a who’s who of Australian movie royalty
and Walter Chiari as Nino Culotta and is still available on Netflix
and Mr O’Grady had 15 novels published
A historic waterfront property at 68 Algernon Street in Oatley
has been listed for sale for the first time since 1990 and is expected to break the suburb’s house price record of $4.8 million
three-bathroom property is located on 1,400sqm of waterfront land overlooking the Georges River
It was the former home of Australian author John O’Grady (pictured above)
who wrote the best-selling 1957 comic novel They’re a Weird Mob (under the pseudonym Nino Culotta) in the property’s boathouse
said O’Grady lived in the property until his death in 1981
The current owner then bought the property in 1990 and made significant improvements to give it a style closer to an inner-city
The main house (pictured below) features four bedrooms
two large balconies fore entertaining with what Pucak calls “the best views in the St George area” and a swimming pool with water features and a massive glass rotunda
offers a “a magnificent fireplace”
which Pucak said would “work perfectly as a home office for an entrepreneur or senior executive.”
The boathouse (pictured below) was where O’Grady wrote another book in his Nino Culotta series
The waterfront property went for less than $400,000 during its 1990 sale and is predicted to sell by private treaty for “well above” the current record Oatley house price of $4.8 million
but that is still close to Oatley railway station so the kids can easily get to school and university,” Pucak said.
Kangaroo Point or even Mosman on the North Shore right now or a terrace-style house in Haberfield
This property will put Oatley waterfronts on their radar.”
Pucak said that buyers from the lower North Shore
eastern suburbs and the inner west were starting to recognise Oatley as an area that delivered “better bang for buck”
and local amenities just 30 minutes to the city
“The buyers might also be a little older and remember the movie or read the book They’re a Weird Mob and had a chuckle that the property where the idea for Nino Culotta crystalised is now up for grabs,” he said
O’Grady’s They’re a Weird Mob was published under the pen name Nino Culotta
which is the name of the novel’s main character
The story focuses on the struggles of an Italian migrant journalist arriving in Sydney as he attempts to navigate 1950s Australian society
A 1966 film adaptation of the book starred Australian actors Chips Rafferty
Tutto Vero is a pizza restaurant in Oatley in South Sydney
Tutto Vero is owned by Antonio Lupo and Anthony Costa
two best friends who have known each other since high school
Tutto Vero dish up pizzas with toppings like Guanciale with Grana Padano; Mortadella
fior de latte and pistachio as well as classic pepperoni and Capricciosa pizzas
"We called it Tutto Vero because we loved all the different ways it can be interpreted
In Italian it means: “It’s all true!” “It’s all real!” “It’s all genuine”," says Anthony Costa
The newspaper headline of the 2006 Italian World Cup victory sporting the words "Tutto Vero!" that inspired the name hangs just inside the front window of the shop
Both men come from Italian families and have been friends playing football (soccer) and eating pizza for over 20 years
Anthony had a career in football but his interest in food was passed down by his grandparents who owned and operated one of Sydney's biggest fruit shops in the 70s while Antonio had a career as an electrician after studying graphic design
In 2016 Antonio travelled to Napoli to train as a pizzaiolo and brought back with him a pizza recipe
Using Gozney ovens they honed their pizzas even taking the oven with them on holidays
"We had been talking about opening our own pizzeria but the timing never felt right - kids
The fact that neither of us had any idea how to run a pizzeria never crossed our mind." Then mid last year it got serious; Antonio and his wife Holly were living in a caravan in the back yard of their half renovated house on the South Coast and Anthony and his wife were juggling multiple soccajoeys businesses and everyone was looking for a change
" Oatley has a nice community feel about it
We wanted the pizzeria to feel like the kind of small venue where you get to know your regulars and have banter with customers
now one of our old teachers is a regular," says Antonio
They did most of the fit out themselves after hours and on weekends as they were both working full time
At the same time the duo did AVPN training with Roberto Di Massa in Sydney and met Neapolitan pizza chef Pasquale ‘Pachi’ Petrecca
The pizza oven nicknamed "Fabio" after the captain of the 2006 Italian football team was imported and tiled in situ
Blue was chosen as it is the colour of the national Italian jersey
It was a nervous wait while the oven made its 3 month long journey from Italy
I'll drive or go anywhere for pizza and when Tutto Vero came up on my Instagram and I saw that familiar leopard printed puffy edge it went straight to the top of my list
Monica and I were planning a takeaway dinner together and I'd pick up the pizzas from Tutto Vero and take them to her house to eat
"Ok give me your picks and I'll give you mine," I said to Monica and between the two of us we had a list of four pizzas we really wanted to try
We both honed in on the guanciale and mortadella pizzas while she also chose the capricciosa pizza (aka the supreme) while I went for the spicy Tutto Bene
I did not count on the smell of the pizzas in the back seat
making the 28 minute drive to her house in record time
The sliced pork cheek is served on a white pizza with Grana Padano cheese
the aroma made my mouth water as it reminded me of carbonara but the caramelised red onion is very sweet so it steers it in a different direction
It's nice but I think next time I'd opt for no onion and more parmesan cheese and black pepper to make it more savoury because I prefer more savoury flavours
The base is made using Italian flour and very little yeast with a fermentation at a minimum of 24 hours up to 48 hours depending on conditions
They have also developed their own gluten free bases
"We’ve always been judgmental of pizza toppings
they have to be top quality or the pizza will be a 2 out of 10
squash the tomatoes and slice the meat ourselves on site daily
It doesn’t matter how good the dough is - if the cheese is $^&t the pizza won’t be as good and you’ll feel like you’ve had greasy takeaway."
Monica comes from Emilia Romagna where mortadella comes from and we both love it
Here it is sliced into handkerchief thin slices and folded like a flower and paired with fior de latte
fragrant lemon zest and a generous pistachio crumb
The ricotta stuffed crust is a delightful surprise too
The Capricciosa has a bit of everything from the deli counter including San marzano tomato
It's a tasty pizza especially with the generous amount of olives and ham
However both our favourite pizza is the Tutto Bene with San marzano tomato sauce
It's the perfect balance of flavours with the spicy nduja and salami and cooling fresh ricotta
There are also gelato and desserts available but I'm happy finishing on pizza
do you think you could open a business with your best friend
Is there a pizza topping that you always order
