New Zealand Police have announced the winner of the 2025 Race Unity Speech Awards is Jordyn Joy Pillay, of Ormiston Senior College in east Auckland. Police say Jordyn’s speech highlights diversity must be more than a moment – it must be a movement. “I am the ocean I cannot be read I am calm and soothing and so accepting,” says Jordyn, in her speech. “I’m home to fins and feathers, skin and scales… home to many, I freely give. The awards were held at the Ngā Kete Wānanga Marae, at Manukau Institute of Technology Ōtara Campus, over the weekend and featured students from several schools across New Zealand, police say. This year’s speech theme – Te Moana Nui o te Kanorau – The Great Ocean of Diversity – highlights our need for the natural harmony that we see in the outdoors to be replicated in our society. The metaphor also talks to our strength being in our differences, police say. Police Commissioner Richard Chambers is delighted to be the first Commissioner to attend the awards. “Supporting initiatives like this represents our commitment to building trust and confidence with the diverse communities we serve,” Chambers says. Police Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers, the chief judge of the awards, stressed the importance of providing a platform for rangatahi to discuss and share their thoughts on important societal issues. “I’m astonished by the quality of the speeches from our young people over the weekend,” she says. “As police, we’re proud to be supporting a platform for our young people to voice their aspirations and solutions.” Superintendent Rakesh Naidoo (MNZM) – the Police’s National Partnerships Manager Ethnic, acknowledges the history of the award. “As iwi and community partnerships, we’re honoured to have been supporters of these awards for nearly two decades,” he says. “These awards offer us a meaningful platform to be highly visible amongst our youth and positively engage with them on issues that are important to them and their communities. “Each year, we’re inspired by the voices of our young people, who are leading us now and into the future,” says Naidoo. The Race Unity Speech Awards were established by the New Zealand Bahá’í community in memory of race relations advocate and Bahá’í Faith member Hedi Moani. Organised by the NZ Bahá’í community, a religious community dedicated to promoting the oneness of humanity at various levels, the speech awards is supported by New Zealand Police, the Human Rights Commission, Foundation North, Manukau Institute of Technology, Ministry for Ethnic Communities, Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, Speech New Zealand, Hedi Moani Charitable Trust, and Studio Marque. to become the first in England to be phone-free removing access to smartphones from its 35,000 pupils during the school day due to their “catastrophic” impact on children’s mental health and learning The Ormiston academies trust which runs 44 state schools including 32 secondaries has begun phasing out access to phones at all its schools across the country with eight secondary schools adopting new policies this term and the rest to follow The move comes as school leaders and policymakers across the world are considering tougher restrictions on how children use and interact with smartphones, including a recent French government report recommending a bar on internet-enabled phones for children under 13 and only allowing access to social media after the age of 16 said the status quo in most schools – allowing pupils to keep phones during the school day – was an inadequate response to the disruption phones caused to pupil learning and wellbeing Tom Rees chief executive of the Ormiston academies trust Photograph: Fabio De Paola/The GuardianHe said: “We are seeing huge and real concerns around mental health we’re also seeing real concerns about self-harm A&E admissions – these are facts from across the world involving young people and adolescents “We’re seeing a clear correlation between that and mobile phone and social media use Not all mobile phone use is equal and the relationship between that and adolescent mental health “There is a responsibility for society to respond and a responsibility for schools to make it harder for children to access inappropriate content through the school day and restrict the draw of social media.” Pupils’ phones are locked away for the day at Tenbury High Photograph: Fabio De Paola/The GuardianRees said pupils’ access to phones was already banned at Ormiston’s primary special needs and alternative provision schools and that stricter policies were needed across its secondary schools to improve learning He said: “Learning can’t happen without attention A lot of this is about a battle for attention It’s not just about having your phone out and using it “There’s evidence that tells us that even if your phone is in the same room still thinking about it and being drawn to it wondering if there has been a notification on it and what it might be “That is impacting young people’s ability to learn An increasing distraction is catastrophic for the process of learning and that’s true both at school and at home.” said he was open-minded about following Australia’s move to ban social media for under-16s “It is making some young people increasingly vulnerable We don’t have yet much evidence about what action makes a big difference in response or is indeed effective So I’m looking very closely at the Australian experience and I’m open-minded I would do anything to keep young people safe,” he told BBC Radio 4 told the Times he thought there needed to be action on young people’s access to social media “There are 109,000 kids waiting for mental health support It’s just awful; that’s the future generation These are the kids who will produce the journalists “If anything could be done on social media on a personal basis I don’t know the solutions but we have to have some controls on access to some of the materials you can get access to on social media.” Earlier this year the Department for Education (DfE) updated its advice on mobile phones giving school leaders in England greater options to ban or restrict them there has been no reason for schools to change policies However, research by Ofcom has found that children’s phone ownership rose steeply from age eight until the age of 12 setting off demands to further restrict phone use in schools In May, St Albans launched an effort to become the UK’s first city to go smartphone-free for children under 14 Meanwhile some mainstream secondary schools have begun to insist pupils can only bring “brick” or non-internet phones with them But other governments have been prepared to go further. The Netherlands education ministry this year in effect banned phones, tablets and smartwatches from classrooms warning that harsher regulations would follow if schools failed to enforce the policy After the report’s publication the French government announced a trial at more than 200 secondary schools that requires pupils to hand over their phones on arrival. said Ormiston’s phone-free policy was the most ambitious he was aware of and part of a wider national and international trend towards tighter restrictions He said: “Culture has now finally caught up with technology and the evidence base has now confirmed what many people suspected for a long time – that mobile phones are a serious detriment to children’s learning and probably their mental health and wellbeing and even their safety when they are unsupervised “The school environment is very much about focus, motivation and thinking hard about things. Mobile phones promote the opposite: grazing superficial thinking and novelty and entertainment which is why we now know the negative effect that mobile phones can have.” Bennett added that “one of the simplest things any school can do is to completely ban their use” except in “permitted circumstances” such as for children commuting to and from school He said he visited several schools each week and had noticed more “waking up to the reality” of the impact on children’s lives “Most schools have a mobile phone policy which involves some type of restriction but what I see is a lot of schools that don’t enforce those policies very thoroughly which means phone access is still easily available in social spaces or corridors or at breaks “The wise school restricts even these times and makes sure that all teachers are supported to know how when and why they are confiscating mobile phones.” this is a Premium article and requires a subscription to read Ormiston Hospital at Flat Bush: new wing the first place that it was ever grown in this state was here at Ormiston House on Brisbane's Moreton Bay Louis Hope acquired 320 hectares here and he lived in a slab hut while Ormiston House was being built the Yuggerah people who had lived here in harmony with the mangroves the colonials wanted to make a statement about holding dominion Like so many younger sons of the English aristocracy Hope came out to the colonies to do well for himself and for the mother country in the process Ormiston was primarily a testing site for trialling the commercial viability of exotic plants Very little of the original landscape exists what we see here today is just the core surrounding the original homestead At the time that the grounds were laid out they followed the 'Gardenesque' landscape tradition Now this was a set of rules which were created by Scottish botanist John Claudius Loudon in 1830 Now what is 'Gardenesque' landscaping Well it's the opposite of naturalistic gardening They set up plants against each other using different growth forms to maximise their impact in a landscape forward driveway going straight to the front of the house lined with Bunya Pines so they impress the visitor as they arrive garden areas to contrast the different parts of the garden non e of which can be seen from one vantage point You've got to explore a Gardenesque landscape The whole idea behind Gardenesque is to create an artificial landscape - a work of art Now there's some classic trees here in the Gardenesque style feathered foliage all the way down the sides of the rugged bark And just over there is a Queensland Lacebark with a rounded canopy Now if you plant three of them close together you enhance their difference and that's how Gardenesque delivers drama And Ormiston isn't just about the use of plants There are only two plants to our knowledge growing in Australia he was good mates with the former head of Brisbane Botanic Gardens Walter Hill and they exchanged propagating material and that's how Louis Hope got hold of this Macadamia And it's got a very unusual growth form it comes from central America where it is adapted t heat frost floods It is a perfect plant for growing in eastern Australia and I have never seen a trunk taller than about this on one of these plants It is rare to see such a large specimen allowed to grow in its natural form Traditionally these are grown as stock proof hedges It is not weedy and produces flavoursome fruit Victorian era gardeners loved their evergreens This magnificent mango is a splendid example but it is also a connection with Ormiston's wonderful rich food culture Quite a lot of indentured labourers worked this estate and at the time it was common practice for people to bring their favourite food plants like the mango and plant them And another example of an exotic plant are these hoop pines this was a perfect exotic tree for a large estate It is also a link with Australia's Gondwanan history and it is still today one of our most significant plantation trees We've just had a glimpse of Ormiston and some of its wonderful plants and that's this plant: Lepidozamia Hopei a cycad from far northern Queensland that was named in honour of Louis hope I think it is a fitting tribute for the man and his work because as we garden in a changing climate perhaps we should be looking to the 19 century experimenters and enthusiasts for our inspiration STEPHEN RYAN: If you want an online chat with your fellow gardeners go to the community section of our website and join the Gardening Australia It's a great gardening community and some of our presenters call in from time to time But one thing you won't see there is what's on next week's program Josh has been lucky enough to visit Broome where he saw a community project helping disadvantaged students of all ages to acquire skills by learning to grow plants And John knows that proper tree management and replacement programs are critical if trees are to remain a part of our urban landscape Well that's all the gardening we have time for this week Louis Hope acquired 320 hectares in Queensland's Ormiston where he lived in a slab hut while Ormiston House was being built Unlike the traditional owners - the Yuggerah people who had lived in harmony with the mangroves the colonists wanted to make a statement about holding dominion and about mastering nature for the glory of the British Empire There are some classic trees here in the Gardenesque style you enhance their differences and that's how Gardenesque delivers drama: Ormiston isn't just about the use of plants Louis Hope was friends with Walter Hill who was the former head of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens so their exchanges of propagating materials resulted in some real rarities at Ormiston and credible horticultural and gardening advice inspiring and entertaining all Australian gardeners around the nation Donation: Donor family representative Jonette patients,” Dr Mastry said “We are able to address a range of problems through a minimally invasive day procedure that has led to a long-term reduction in the number of hysterectomies required.” It was a finding proved true for Mater Private Hospital Redland patient who underwent surgery with the new equipment in April to remove a uterine fibroid and treat persistent heavy bleeding causing the serious condition I was thinking a hysterectomy would be my only option with the symptoms that I was experiencing until Dr Mastry explained how he could perform surgery using the new equipment,” Ms Clews said “I was really surprised that this type of surgery was able to be performed close to home how incredible my recovery and outcome has been “It took away the added stress of having to travel into the city and enabled me to be close to home and near my family.” Ms Clews said she would be forever grateful to the Waller family for their generous donation of equipment to the Mater Private Hospital Redland “Not only has it helped my quality of life but a lot of other women in our local area will benefit from this procedure and not have to go through extensive surgery,” Ms Clews said Jonette Waller said it was a family legacy to contribute to their local community and one she would continue “We don’t do it for the recognition – we live in a world where we often take so much when you have the opportunity to give back it’s especially important to do so,” Ms Waller said “These are the values instilled by the Sisters of Mercy and a compounding reason our family supports Mater.” Dr Mastry said gynaecological medicine had advanced significantly in recent years “This equipment allows Mater Private Hospital Redland to offer a service that is comparable to world-class cities,” he said “This equipment will change lives in the Redlands enabling us to more easily and accurately remove endometrial polyps which will increase the likelihood of detecting early endometrial cancer.” Dr
