We’ve removed the level crossings at Main Street, McGregor Road and Racecourse Road in Pakenham
extended the metropolitan rail line by 2km and opened new stations at Pakenham and East Pakenham
The crossings were removed by building a 2.5km rail bridge over the roads
creating 6 MCGs worth of new community open space for locals to enjoy for generations to come
The open space, named Barring buluk Park, includes walking and bike paths, exercise equipment, barbeque area, half-basketball court, playground, and a Changing Places facility
Around 63,000 vehicles passed through these former level crossings each day
where the boom gates were down for 30% of the morning peak

Cardinia Highway Patrol officers are appealing for dashcam footage as they investigate a collision in Pakenham last night
It is understood a black dirt bike collided with a black Mercedes SUV on McGregor Road about 6.20pm
The male rider was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries
The driver of the car stopped at the scene and spoke to police
has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
Dignitaries joined Pakenham volunteers at the handover event
showing their support and expressing gratitude for the brigade’s dedication
Pakenham’s BA Support vehicle was jointly funded through a successful grant from the Victorian Emergency Services Equipment Program (VESEP) and contributions from the brigade
emphasised the vehicle’s impact on future capability
“Receiving this vehicle is a significant step in increasing our operational capacity
It gives our volunteers the opportunity to do more
learn more and take on greater responsibility in BA training and operations,” Chris said
“Having additional BA cylinders and equipment where needed keeps us supplied with air during prolonged or high-risk operations
This gives us the flexibility to respond to a wider range of emergencies
from large structural fires to complex hazmat situations
“Not only does it enhance on-scene efficiency and safety
it also strengthens our ability to support surrounding brigades when BA resources are needed.”
Pakenham brigade members have relied on neighbouring brigades for this support and are grateful to have the ability to now support other brigades in the area
Deputy Chief Officer South East Region Trevor Owen
said BA Support vehicles are used to assist firefighters at incidents where breathing apparatus is needed such as hazmat incidents and major structure fires
“These vehicles will also provide future benefits as we move to a more contemporary cylinder management arrangement where brigades will be able to exchange an empty cylinder for a full one on the spot without the need for double handling,” Trevor said
“This is a great asset for the brigade and the broader area for many years to come
I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this happen
particularly Pakenham brigade and the community for their generous donations.”
This new addition marks a major step forward in enhancing firefighting capabilities and ensuring the safety of both responders and community in the Pakenham area

a private online community of over 8.5k women across Gippsland
and Casey are calling out political promises
warning that without real action on domestic and family violence
Sian Broadbent added that “change will not come from empty words at election time”
children’s and men’s right to live safely and peacefully
is treated as a national responsibility — not left as their burden to carry alone,” she said
“It will come when this country is willing to see
women aren’t just asking for advice — they’re asking for belief
The group questions why Victoria has not yet criminalised coercive control
One in six women — and one in 18 men — will experience physical or sexual violence from the age of 15
One in four women — and one in seven men — will experience emotional abuse
“Will these new laws be a turning point—or just more lip service
too many women are trapped in catastrophic situations
and the help they need isn’t coming fast enough,” Sian said
don’t understand what coercive control actually looks like — fear
often without a single visible bruise — or how perpetrators work to flip the narrative and paint victims as the problem — how much impact will it really have
and cultural change across the system and society over time
these changes risk becoming another box ticked while women remain unprotected.”
One member and survivor of two abusive relationships warned that preventing family violence must start early
“To tackle the issue there needs to be more preventative measures such as better education programs from primary school age
Especially around topics for sexual abuse such as consent and body safety,” she said
A local business owner urged the community to recognise that no one is immune to domestic violence
“So many people assume that women going through domestic violence are weak
pathetic women or low socio-economic women – this is not true,” she said
We need to understand how rife this is within the community.”
The business owner also urged men to take more responsibility for challenging violence and harmful behaviour
while further struggles followed in accessing support
with crucial services being delayed or denied
Jeff Springfield said “Labor will close loopholes that crack down on abusive partners weaponising debt and will boost funding to monitor high-risk perpetrators”
“A re-elected Labor Government will take practical steps such as stopping perpetrators from using the tax system to create debts as coercive control and hold them accountable if they do,” he said
“We will also invest $8.6 million in perpetrator responses
including ankle bracelets for high-risk offenders
behaviour change programs and early interventions for young people.”
Federal MP Jason Wood said “only a Dutton Coalition Government will comprehensively address family and domestic violence to improve women’s and children’s safety”
“These policies build on the Coalition’s record and previous policy commitments
including having invested $3.5 billion in women’s safety in government
doubling funding to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation
and extending our plan allowing Australians to access up to $50,000 of their super so that older women and women fleeing violence can get help to buy a home and restart their lives.”
The Greens have also launched a $15 billion plan to address the national crisis of family

A new public artwork at Pakenham Station will become a dynamic meeting point for locals and visitors
Nesting in the northern section of the station precinct near Main Street
Meet me at the Pakenham Owl by James and Eleanor Avery is a contemporary sculpture that references the Greater Sooty Owl
a species known to frequent the local area
"We chose an Owl because of the protected Greater Sooty Owl local to the Cardinia shire
and because of the symbolism attached to an owl as a spiritual guide
always returning to its nesting spot," Eleanor said
Fabricated from laser-cut aluminium and set in concrete
the sculpture will stand 3.2m tall and 2.7m wide
The architectural features of the new Pakenham Station including the V-shaped staircase
bronze finish and curved roof have inspired the sculptures' shape and colour
Meet me at the Pakenham owl will be installed at Pakenham Station later this month

After years of expectation for a fateful return
Costco appears to have applied for another permit in the South East – this time in Pakenham
An application was lodged on Monday 17 March for a “new Costco store” located at 130 Greenhills Road
This follows a long time of rumors about a renewed bid by Costco for a warehouse in the South East
a permit was approved by Cardinia Shire Council for a Costco in Officer South
the State’s Minister for Planning vetoed the decision as it fell within State Significant Industrial land and the Costco was deemed out of character of the highly protected zoning
Costco maintained a commitment to a warehouse in the South East after the setback and many different predictions from residents about a new site came and went
The new site falls within the Pakenham South Employment Precinct which also falls under the same State Significant Industrial land as Officer South
The application stats the cost of the works as $74 million
The application seeks to use the site for retail services as well as a service station
Pakenham resident Arthur Walker has survived more than most could imagine

Cyclists young and old alike brought their bikes to Pakenham to celebrate the newest way to get around town
The local Ghostriders Cycling Group switched things up recently to take a new bike route thanks to the upgraded shared use paths on 2 Pakenham-based Victorian Big Build projects
The 40-strong group of cyclists – ranging from 80-year-olds to a pair of passionate 10-year-olds -headed out from Pakenham Railway Station
across the Princes Freeway on the newly built bridge and out towards Koo Wee Rup – a 15km ride that for the first time includes dedicated cycling and walking paths
They celebrated the ride with a coffee catch-up in Koo Wee Rup to cap off an incredible first ride for the club along the new shared use path built jointly by teams on the Pakenham Roads Upgrade and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrade.
The Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrade was completed last year including a 10km shared use path starting from Southeast Boulevard all the way down to the Manks Road roundabout
With the Princes Freeway Upgrade completed on the Pakenham Roads Upgrade
crews are now working on Racecourse Road Upgrade
which will include removing the Bald Hill Road roundabout and upgrading it to an intersection with traffic lights
These works will ease congestion and create better linkages for Pakenham’s transport network
including new walking and shared use paths improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists
By the time crews complete the Pakenham Roads Upgrade in early 2027
pedestrians and drivers will be made easier than ever with these linked shared use paths
The Pakenham Roads Upgrade has completed major works on Stage 1 of the project
delivering new ramps and lanes on the Princes Freeway and a new bridge on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road over the freeway
north of the freeway were also completed prior to Christmas
with works ongoing into March to widen the citybound freeway entry ramp
Major works on Stage 3 to upgrade Racecourse Road will start later in February
These works are part of nearly $1 billion worth of transport infrastructure projects underway or recently completed in the area to upgrade the transportation network in and around Pakenham
The Ghostriders Cycling Club meets for recreational rides on the Warburton Trail and other bike trails around Victoria weekly. Visit their website for further information on joining their rides: ghostriderscycling.com

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a teenager following a fatal collision in Pakenham last year.
It is understood a silver Audi collided with a Subaru station wagon at the intersection of Princes Highway and Windermere Boulevard just after 4pm on 21 November 2024.
The front seat passenger of the Audi, a 16-year-old boy from the Casey area, was airlifted to hospital where he later died.
The driver of the Audi, a 16-year-old boy from the Cardinia area, was airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The rear seat passenger of the Audi, a 15-year-old boy from the Cardinia area, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Subaru, a 44-year-old Pakenham man, and his passengers, aged 6 and 10 years old, were uninjured.
Today, detectives charged a 16-year-old boy from the Cardinia area with culpable driving, dangerous driving causing death and theft of a motor vehicle.
He will appear before a children’s court at a later date.

Anglicare Victoria has expanded its mobile food relief service to Pakenham, deploying the AV Aid Van in a time of increased need in communities.
“We’re seeing more families who have never used our services before, more parents working extra part time jobs to afford the necessities. The cost of living is really taking a toll,” project coordinator, Cindy-Lee Harper said.
“A lot of families come to the east for a supposedly cheaper cost of living, but we’re seeing more families with two adults working who cannot make ends meet.
“Unaffordable, insecure housing paired with rising energy, education and transport costs have had a big impact, especially in a peri-urban region such as Cardinia.
“Homelessness levels have increased and there’s growing numbers of ‘hidden homeless,’ those who are couch surfing or living in their cars.”
The AV Aid Van’s monthly visits to Anglicare Victoria’s Pakenham Parentzone Hub – located within Pakenham Hills Primary School – coincide with the community playgroup.
The Hub is also connected to the Nappy Collective and Thread Together Wardrobe.
The next two visits will be on Wednesdays 14 May and 11 June from 10am to 12pm.
“The need is high out our way and people are happy to be assisted. Within our local schools and kindergartens, but beyond that too. We’re getting people coming all the way from Clyde. They leave with groceries, nappies and maybe a clean pair of knickers,” Cindy-Lee said.
On 1 May, Anglicare Victoria will launch its Winter Appeal with the aim to raise funds to ‘Take Hunger off the Table’ for families in the south east – and across the state.
Chris de Pavia oversees Anglicare Victoria’s 16 Emergency Relief Centres and said the work to support hungry families was made possible by the generosity of everyday Victorians.
“Last year, we were able to provide over 25 thousand food parcels and supermarket vouchers to those in need, that’s families and individuals who would otherwise go hungry,” he said.
“The demand for food relief is high as we head into the colder months. We’re encouraging people to dig deep as tax time approaches.”
A donation of $70 to Anglicare Victoria can provide a week’s worth of healthy school lunches for a child, $150 can provide a bag of groceries for people with no food in the house, and $200 can ensure a family of four has three meals a day for a week.
“We’re grateful for whatever people can give, every little bit helps,” Chris said.
You can donate today at giving.anglicarevic.org.au.

the Coalition’s failure to sway voters has
come under intense scrutiny.

Its lack of policies around property that resonated with voters has been a large part of that criticism.

Among those policies was a $5-billion infrastructure program to unlock up to 500,000 new homes
