April 29: The first person of Tibetan origin to be elected to public office in North America,Bhutila Karpoche the candidate of the Democratic Party for Taiaiako’n—Parkdale—High Park has secured second-place in yesterday’s Canadian parliamentary election representing 23.05% of the total ballots cast The riding was won by Liberal Party candidate Karim Bardeesy while Conservative Party candidate Wladyslaw Lizon finished third with 12,452 votes (19.57%) who currently serves as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Parkdale–High Park in the Ontario Legislative Assembly was seeking to make history once again by becoming a Member of Parliament she made headlines as the first person of Tibetan origin to be elected to public office in North America when she won her seat in the provincial legislature The Taiaiako’n—Parkdale—High Park riding previously known as Parkdale—High Park before boundary adjustments for the 2025 federal election saw strong voter participation with a turnout of 69.14% – 63,618 of 92,011 registered electors casting their ballots Karpoche received strong support from the Tibetan community in Toronto and prominent Tibetan artists and activists across North America Parkdale–High Park is home to one of the largest Tibetan communities in Canada Karpoche proposed legislation to designate July as Tibetan Heritage Month which became law in Ontario in September 2020 She also founded the Ontario Parliament’s Friends of Tibet initiative and hosts regular Tibet Day events Currently serving as the First Deputy Chair of the Ontario Legislative Assembly Karpoche has been recognised for her advocacy on affordable housing Her accolades include being named Toronto’s Best MPP by NOW Magazine readers and being listed as one of Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants by Canadian Immigrant Magazine Bhutila is very popular in High Park Parkdale but this time it was mostly the strategic voting (progressives voting for Liberals to keep Conservative out) that benefited the Liberals She lost by a huge margin (over 21,000 votes) so I doubt Tibetan votes would have made much of a difference this time However, I do believe that Bhutila should engage more with Tibetans living in Parkdale because their votes matter. Most of the people who were pictured along with Bhutila in this Phayul article (https://www.phayul.com/2025/04/28/52145/) do not live in her Parkdale constituency and the previous poster’s observation about the character and integrity of some of these supporters are not far from the truth While I firmly believe Bhuti-la was the most deserving candidate in this election one that is both disheartening and difficult to reconcile I sincerely hope she will continue to refine her campaign strategy and return stronger in the next round It is also worth reflecting on the nature of the support that emerged during this election A significant portion of it came from individuals who lack the trust and confidence of the broader Tibetan community yet were still described by outlets like Phayul as “influential figures.” In a campaign of this importance both the credibility of the supporters and the character of the campaigners matter deeply I truly hope Bhuti-la chooses to run again she is backed by genuinely respected and trusted voices within the Tibetan community individuals whose influence is rooted in integrity and public confidence It didn’t matter who was the most deserving candidate people voted strategically to ensure that a leader that they believed should be the PM of Canada won Bhutila’s party lost badly and it had nothing to do with her She would have won the provincial seat easily but she was contesting the federal seat this time and the stakes were too high New public art installed at Parkdale’s new station precinct pays homage to the past ‘Windsong’ by Melbourne artist Anne Ross consists of 2 bronze sculptures that capture past and contemporary elements of the area Located opposite the Parkdale Village traders on Como Parade West the sculptures stand at 1.5m and a larger 1.8m tall respectively so community members of all ages can connect with the art “Both of the figures are facing the future straight on while acknowledging the past” – Anne Ross You can learn more about ‘Windsong’ in our fact sheet and the new Parkdale Station is open to passengers The 49 rail passenger car parks at Parkdale Station are now open Some of the open space facilities are ready for the community to enjoy including the half basketball court near the Warrigal Road intersection The entirety of the open space and community facilities will open in the new year Landscaping and planting will also be completed in 2025 after the summer heat to give plants the best chance to thrive The Frankston Line will be level crossing free by 2029 transforming the way locals live Render of Lowe Living’s upcoming luxury apartments in Parkdale A former private hospital in the heart of Parkdale is going to be redeveloped into 45 luxury residences The site at 152 Como Parade was once the home to the 67-bed Como Private Hospital which had a day surgery unit It was acquired in 2023 by builder and developer Lowe Living who has hired Jackson Clements Burrows Architects to design the residences which will be worth a total of $66m RELATED: Bec Judd’s interior design career takes next step with Lowe Living Private wine paradise has karaoke, teppanyaki rooms, secret trapdoor Original 1980s home smashes reserve by $1m This comes as the Kingston Council has said the number of dwellings needs to increase by 70 per cent by 2051 to keep up with demand with the suburb home to about 102,000 people 45 new luxury residences are coming to Parkdale two- and three-bedroom apartments are set to commence in 2025 Lowe Living managing director Emma Lowe said the firm wanted to set a new standard of luxury in boutique “Melbourne’s bayside is experiencing unmitigated growth as economic factors and a lack of developable sites is pushing growth exponentially outwards,” Ms Lowe said “Parkdale is a well-established location close to quality schools and is the perfect location to welcome sensitive yet quality new housing that can support a growing local population.” MORE: Myer family’s Melbourne mansion could sell for $100m+ Millions tied up in old Victorian bikie clubhouses revealed She added that the former hospital site was one of the last “super sites” in Parkdale and the project aimed to address a critical under supply of high-quality apartments in the area The former Como Private Hospital is one of the last “super sites” in the area While a single instance of a private hospital closing wasn’t necessarily cause for concern Australian Medical Association Victoria president Dr Jill Tomlinson said it was worth noting private hospital viability in Australia as it was an essential part of the health care system the pressures on public health services would be greater,” Dr Tomlinson said Sign up to the Herald Sun Weekly Real Estate Update. replanted in the south-side of Parkdale’s open space towards White Street In September and October last year, we also returned Parkdale’s iconic palms to Como Parade West shrubs and grasses will be planted after the summer heat The Parkdale Vultures have franked their credentials as a genuine contender for the Premier C crown this season after an eleven-goal avalanche in the third quarter powered them to a thunderous 77-point victory over PEGS Vultures coach Owen Lalor insists his leaders were ‘frustrated by not playing their best footy’ A few magnet moves later and a stern warning confronted the competition – these Vultures will be at the pointy end once again Onballers Tarkyn O’Leary and Oliver Green were moved to the wings providing significant drive between the arcs Wingers Kai Colella and Hunter Lynch went to half-back and impressed both rebounding the football In the absence of talismanic forward Mitch Brown centre half-back Jack Cheep was swung forward to great effect booting an equal team-high three goals for the afternoon 13 individual goalkickers contributed to the team’s tally The 26.13 (169) to 14.8 (92) result sees the Vultures move to second on the ladder amidst a logjam of sides with a 1-1 record who on Sunday registered a second successive win by more than 50 points The 19.17 (131) to 12.4 (76) victory over St Bedes/Mentone Tigers ensures new Coach Lachlan Buszard’s dream start to life as the Jackas figurehead continues AJAX piled on ten scoring shots to one in the first quarter building a platform for their eventual resounding victory Pleasing for Buszard was the proficiency of the youth in his team “Our average age was about 22 today,” he said 18-year-old Jethro Gunn has impressed his coach and onlookers alike in his first two senior appearances for the club booting five goals across the two fixtures Toby Sheezel starred with a game-high four goals joining ruckman Jake Wrobel as the only two Jackas to find themselves with best player nods in both games this season A nine-goal last quarter from Brad Berry’s men provided some reward for effort for the Tigers who had managed just 20 points in the first three stanzas Berry was pleased with the ‘healthy glimpses’ his side showed late in the game but was left disappointed with his side’s inability to regain the upper hand in three facets of the game they pride themselves on: contest method and their ‘ability to read cues and outnumber at marking contests’ The Tigers will spend the bye refining their disposal choices inspired by the Jackas’ willingness to always take the first option Sitting third heading into the Easter bye is Beaumaris who bounced back from a Round 1 loss to the Tigers in emphatic fashion Their 21.21 (147) to 7.5 (47) victory over Glen Eira/Old McKinnon was underscored by ‘fantastic and really organised defenders’ and ‘mids who highlighted their strengths’ according to well-pleased Sharks Coach Josh Bourke “We had a couple of things click and certainly some improved availability helped us It was a bit of a strange game given the ground and I think the scores ballooned a little as a result,” he said After six straight losses to end last year’s Premier B campaign Bourke touched on how much a performance like Saturday’s means to the Sharks “July 20th is the last time we sang the song It (the win) was a really important one for us as a club,” he said Favourite sons in ruckman Callum Heath and midfielder Riley Virtue continued their strong starts to the season Jai Florent and Liam Hayes also drawing Bourke’s praise On the back of limited rotations due to early injuries the Gryphons were left to rue 13 red-time goals against “We competed well till about the 20-minute mark of each quarter but then they just overran us,” acknowledged coach Guy Martyn they beat us in every facet of the game – cleaner with their hands and execution of skills stronger in the contest and able to pick us apart when they had the ball,” he continued It’s a winless start in Carnegie for Martyn whose attention must now turn to a daunting trip to Brindisi Street where his charges will encounter a smarting Tigers outfit Despite fewer scoring shots than the visiting Mazenod side Marcellin eked out a three-point victory on Saturday Eagles vice-captain Adam Tomaro backed up his brave efforts in last week’s loss while Jarryd Raffa and Matthew Fewings led the way for the Nodders Nodders Coach Peter Banfield was complimentary of Marcellin’s performance in the ‘very hot’ conditions and deserved to win.” The 10.11 (71) to 9.14 (68) result leaves both sides 1-1 at the bye with Mazenod’s percentage much healthier than Marcellin’s owing to the latter’s sizeable loss in Round 1 Parkside exacted some revenge against Prahran in the two sides’ first meeting since the Division 1 Grand Final of 2024 Compounding the 14.8 (92) to 9.3 (57) loss for Two Blues coach Craige Milward is a mounting injury crisis which saw his side limited to one rotation for much of the contest “We must’ve ticked the footy gods off – we have suffered six key injuries in the first two rounds,” he said while remaining tight-lipped about diagnoses for the unavailable players Milward conceded that an inability to defend their own turnovers hamstrung his side in stark contrast to the Devils’ efficiency in this area Parkside have curiously conceded and scored 145 points across the first two weeks of the season with their next chance to build some percentage coming against fellow northsiders Marcellin Next week’s slate also sees the banged-up Prahran facing the monumental task of slowing the competition leaders in AJAX while PEGS play host to Mazenod and the Gryphons face St Bedes/Mentone Local bragging rights will once again be on the line in the match of the round where second-placed Parkdale will be hosted by third-placed Beaumaris Another intriguing weekend of William Buck Premier Women’s action unfolded in Round 4 headlined by a top-four clash between Old Geelong and Old Scotch Prahran’s continued efforts to ‘tread water’ amidst an early-season injury crisis A largely competitive 16.18 (114) to 9.8 (62) loss Round 4 of the Division 4 Parkdale station opened to passengers for the first time on Friday 2 August. Works will continue on new lifts, to create nearly two MCGs worth of open space, and recreational facilities including a basketball half court, open-air gym, village green, a community garden and play area. Once complete, passengers will enjoy Parkdale Station’s modern facilities, filled with natural light and featuring a forecourt, gathering places for locals, more lighting, station precinct parking and better CCTV. By 2025, a new shared use path will connect Parkdale to Cheltenham via Mentone and set the groundwork for a future connection to Mordialloc.  More than 100,000 trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted in the area as part of the project, increasing vegetation and greenery in the area. Parkers Road in Parkdale will reopen to vehicles on 8 August, improving journeys for more than 20,000 vehicles travelling through the former level crossings each weekday, where the boom gates were down for up to 44 minutes during the morning peak. The Victorian Government is working to make the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2029 – meaning shorter commutes and a more reliable transport network. Across Melbourne, 84 level crossings are gone for good – saving more than 50 hours of boom gate down time during the morning peak every day and avoiding 100 crashes and near misses every year. gathering places and sporting and recreational facilities for the community to enjoy We’re also planting more than 100,000 trees We have now finalised the designs for the new Parkdale Station and the station precinct These designs contain more details including the car parking layout We have also finalised details for the shared use path that will connect Parkdale to Mentone and allow for the future connection to Mordialloc These designs have been informed by more than 1600 pieces of your feedback received since starting community consultation in late 2021 We’d like to thank everyone for this feedback received across 3 rounds of community consultation and meetings with key liaison groups Ongoing detailed design work to confirm landscaping elements and species to be planted will continue in consultation with City of Kingston More information will be available in 2024 Join us at a community information session to view the designs and chat with the project team Register for an information session or webinar The new Parkdale Station and precinct has been designed to reflect the bayside character and village feel of Parkdale We’ve designed the station to be as compact as possible and blend in with the surrounding new open space The main station entrance will be in the heart of Parkdale Village allowing visitors and locals to easily access and move through the area The nautical architectural design of the main station entrance has extended to the station platforms which will now feature 3 platform lookout points providing views of Port Phillip Bay and maintaining connection between the station and the nearby beach The rail bridge will be supported by single pillars painted a sandy colour in the new station precinct to complement the warm-toned natural materials and a pale eucalypt colour throughout the linear park The central rail bridge design allows us to plant more trees and greenery on both sides of the elevated rail line providing screening of the rail bridge along both Como Parade East and West we are unable to repurpose the existing Parkdale Station building as originally planned The old station building will be celebrated by the installation of an image viewer showing an image of the former Parkdale Station We have designed the new station precinct and open space to connect Como Parade East and Como Parade West providing easier access to the area for locals and visitors The open space under the rail bridge will connect Como Parade East and West allowing pedestrians to cross under the rail bridge more easily The new station precinct will also include a station forecourt and gathering places integrating with the nearby village green and open space The shared use path that connects to Mentone will take advantage of shaded and sunnier areas alongside the rail bridge making it easier to move between the path and activity areas The new alignment will provide a clearer line of sight for people It also means we can spread recreational facilities to make the best use of the new open space and improve accessibility will integrate with design elements such as the new shared use path station entrances and linear park along the rail line to create better connections in the area Community feedback has helped shape the designs and we thank everyone for their input as part of the project For more information about what we heard from the community, and how your feedback has helped shape the design, view the Parkdale consultation reports We heard from the community that the best use of space balances car parking This feedback has informed the design outcomes for the parking at the new Parkdale Station precinct The new passenger parking will include improved lighting and CCTV We’ve also worked closely with City of Kingston on upgrading the informal gravel parking spaces and ensuring the trader precinct continues to be well-serviced by parking in the area There will be 148 time restricted car spaces near the Parkdale shops The new station precinct parking will include: Shop local and support your traders It's important to support local traders and that's why we encourage the community and our workforce to shop local as much as possible One of our initiatives – based on feedback from your local traders – is the launch of a new logo and social media channels dedicated to promoting these businesses To stay up to date with your local traders, follow Parkdale Village Traders on Facebook and Instagram. making the Frankston Line level crossing free by 2030 and improving safety We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road Parkdale by raising the rail line over the 2 roads A new rail bridge will reduce local congestion and allow more trains to run more often as well as deliver new open space and better local connections for the community A $450m contract has been awarded to an alliance comprising Acciona Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project Works can now get underway to remove the level crossings and build the new rail bridge and station Early works will begin in February and over the next few months we’ll start setting up our site facilities and begin relocating services in preparation for major works to begin in mid 2023 A project of this size and scale involves months of planning We carefully schedule works to ensure efficient use of large machinery and minimise disruption during construction Early works for the project will begin in the coming months and activities in the lead up to major construction will include: Residents and businesses in the local area will receive more details ahead of any works So far we've received more than 1500 pieces of feedback from the community since we began the project Thank you to everyone who participated in our updated design consultation in October The updated designs reflected feedback from previous consultations held earlier last year will be incorporated into the final designs As part of our preparation for construction we are setting up site facilities for our project team close to the works we will be setting up temporary site offices at 152 Como Parade West Parkdale (formerly Calvary Health Care Bethlehem) you will see an increase in construction workers and vehicles in the area This site will primarily be used during normal daytime construction hours however when project works are required on weekends or at night for major construction local residents will be notified in advance We’ll keep local residents and traders informed about the ongoing works taking place in the area We’ll provide further information about construction in February to residents and businesses who may be directly affected by the upcoming works Major works for the project will begin in mid 2023 and we need to start preparing the site by removing trees and vegetation that will be impacted by the works We understand that trees and greenery are important to the community so we have worked hard to minimise our impact and protect trees where possible in the project area To help retain as many trees as possible we will be: Our environmental specialists and qualified arborists have been busy over the past few months assessing trees along the rail line These assessments consider impacts to a tree root zone age and health of tree to recommend the likely ability of the tree to remain stable and survive Trees and shrubs that can be safely retained will be protected during construction trees will be inspected for the presence of wildlife with qualified wildlife handlers on call to safely relocate wildlife We’ll provide further information about specific tree and vegetation removal zones in the coming weeks plants and shrubs along the rail corridor and in the new open space Sign up for email updates Text ‘Parkdale’ to 0429 839 892 to register for text message updates The removal of 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road with updated designs for the elevated rail bridge that will provide 2 MCGs of open space and a new Parkdale Station Getting rid of another 2 level crossings on the Frankston Line will improve safety reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often on one of Melbourne’s busiest train lines Each day 20,000 drivers pass through these 2 crossings and the boom gates are down for more than a third of the morning peak Community feedback has shaped the latest designs and the new station precinct and open space has been designed to reflect the local character and village feel of Parkdale The new station precinct will have a generous forecourt and gathering places featuring warm and light-toned materials such as timber Retaining original elements of the existing station is important to locals so the station building will be repurposed and located within the new precinct The new open spaces will feature trees and landscaping and recreation areas including a basketball half court Building a single rail bridge will better connect the suburb – which is currently divided by the rail line – and allows more trees and landscaping to maximise the green space filled with natural light – featuring stairs and lifts to station platforms a new office for Protective Services Officers The community is now invited to share feedback on the updated designs at Engage Victoria, and at face-to-face and virtual community information sessions from mid October The designers will continue to receive valuable insights and advice from 14 community members on the Parkdale Open Space Advisory Panel to shape the final designs The project is also seeking nominations for community members to be part of the project’s Construction Liaison Group who will help inform local communities and listen to feedback about issues that may affect them during construction and the level crossing will be gone in 2025 The Victorian Government is removing 20 dangerous level crossings and building 13 new stations as part of upgrades on the Frankston Line that will improve safety reduce congestion and allow more trains to run more often The Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 85 dangerous and congested level crossings by 2025 Another 8 level crossing removals on the Upfield Line have recently been added The 2 dangerous and congested level crossings at Warrigal Road and Parkers Road will be gone for good this winter A major construction blitz to remove the temporary tracks get trains running on the new elevated rail and get the new Parkdale Station ready will start in mid July and the new Parkdale Station will be open by spring our teams will also be completing retaining walls finishing works will continue in the station precinct including planting trees bushes and grasses as well as building community gathering places and sporting and recreational facilities for the community to enjoy There will also be a shared pedestrian and bicycle path connecting with the existing path between Cheltenham and Mentone The Frankston Line will be level crossing free with all 27 dangerous level crossings gone by 2029 and transform the way locals live work and travel We’ve released early concept designs for our elevated rail project at Parkdale to remove 2 dangerous and congested level crossings and open a new Parkdale Station by 2025 and we want feedback from the community more often on the Frankston Line by getting rid of the level crossings at Warrigal Road and Parkers Road We’ve heard from locals about what they love about their suburb and how they want the project to feature new trees Feedback from the community has shaped the designs which show a vibrant new station precinct and community open space under and around the rail bridge Locals are now invited to provide further feedback through our Engage Victoria survey before refined designs are released later this year. Registrations are also open for our June face-to-face and virtual community information sessions The project will enhance the village look and feel of Parkdale while giving locals new and easier ways to gather access the local shopping strip and essential services The rail bridge will also better connect the suburb which is currently divided by the rail line The bridge is being carefully designed to maximise morning sunlight along the Como Parade West shopping strip passengers will enjoy accessible station facilities filled with natural light – featuring stairs and lifts to both station platforms The works at Parkdale are part of the Victorian Government’s $4 billion investment in the Frankston Line which includes the removal of 20 dangerous and congested level crossings 16 level crossings on the line are already gone for good with 4 more to go at Parkdale and Glen Huntly Piling works have started at Glen Huntly to strengthen the soil in preparation to remove the crossings at Neerim Road and Glen Huntly Road and build a new Glenhuntly Station by 2024 We heard that locals would like to see more trees and greenery in the area We have focused on maximising available green spaces under the rail bridge at Parkdale As part of this we have selected a single rail viaduct design instead of a split viaduct This allows us to create larger areas of green space on either side of the rail line for the community to enjoy Landscapes will focus on native and indigenous planting with attention given to creating natural habitats for wildlife Locals told us that the village feel is what makes Parkdale special We're creating a new village green that seamlessly links both sides of rail corridor provides safer and stronger community connections and will complement the nearby outdoor dining on the Parkdale shopping strip Walking and cycling paths will invite locals to enjoy the new green spaces Some people expressed concerns about potential overshadowing from the rail bridge We have significantly minimised potential overshadowing by building the rail bridge as low as possible in sensitive areas such as the Parkdale village and selecting a single rail viaduct design People like the beach side feel of Parkdale as well as surrounding bushland and nature Some people expressed a preference for natural materials to be used in the precinct Landscape designs will focus on native and indigenous planting and natural warm materials to evoke the surrounding coastal character of Parkdale The Victorian Government is removing 20 dangerous level crossings and building 13 new stations as part of upgrades on the Frankston line that will improve safety We’re removing the dangerous and congested Warrigal Road and Parkers Road level crossings by raising the rail line over the 2 roads and building a new Parkdale Station we’re creating new community open space including new trees and greenery community gathering places and sporting and recreational facilities for the community to enjoy We've released updated designs for the new station precinct and open space Community feedback has helped shape the designs and we thank everyone for their input Locals can now get involved with putting the finishing touches on the design register for an information session or nominate to join a stakeholder liaison group The new Parkdale Station aims to be a focal point for the precinct inspired by the bayside character of the local area the new station building will curve like a lighthouse be made from translucent material and have a warm-coloured The translucent material will allow light in by day We’ve designed the station to be as compact as possible and blend in with the surrounding open space The ground floor is an extension of the village green integrating with the natural materials and landscaping We will move the station to the north to enhance the connectivity of the area and create the village green The main station entrance will be in the heart of Parkdale village A second station entrance will provide additional access for passengers coming from the north and is close to car parking It will be smaller than the main station entrance Both entrances will feature stairs and lifts Parkdale Station will still be a local station improved access and better connections to the nearby shops and services We have designed the new station precinct and open space to reflect the local character and village feel of Parkdale The new station precinct will have a station forecourt and gathering places that integrate with the nearby village green and open space The station precinct and open space will reflect the coastal character of Parkdale with natural materials and native plantings We will create a green linear park with trees and plants throughout including canopy trees and reinstated palm trees Landscaping will focus on native and indigenous species in an informal style The village green will be a new community heart for Parkdale It will link both sides of the rail corridor connecting the 2 shopping strips and blending in with its surrounds A key feature of this space is a gathering circle alongside a promenade and meeting spaces with benches and seating that will flow into the station forecourt Artworks will be integrated into the new station precinct design and open space We will also include simple signage and design elements at key locations throughout the corridor highlighting key facts and points of interest about Parkdale we're building a nature-based playground in the centre of the open space with an open grassed picnic area with tables and seating nearby There will also be other nature-based play areas throughout the open space as well as a small children's and community garden Sporting facilities will include a basketball half court and an open-air gym A new walking and cycling path will link with the shared path from Mentone and meander through the centre of the linear park Car parking will be included within the station precinct We are refining car parking plans and further information will be available as part of final designs Many locals would like the new station precinct design to have a more subdued look and feel that incorporates the characteristics and features of the local area How we’re delivering on your feedback For more information about what we heard from the community, and how your feedback has helped shape the design, see our consultation reports We are now seeking community feedback on the finishing touches for the design Your feedback will help us
