northwest of Melbourne’s CBD The Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub will store renewable energy for use during peak demand periods and absorb surplus rooftop solar power from Victorian homes as it feeds back into the grid The project features cutting-edge inverter technology to support the transmission grid’s voltage and frequency addressing the loss of ‘system inertia’ that will occur as coal and gas-fired power stations are phased out over the next decade Premier Jacinta Allan and State Electricity Commission Minister Lily D’Ambrosio visited the site on Wednesday to mark the start of the installation of the first of 444 Tesla Megapack battery units the 600-megawatt facility will offer 1.6 gigawatt-hours of energy storage—enough to power up to 200,000 homes during peak times More than 15,000 tonnes of rock extracted from the site will be reused to create a protective barrier around the hub which will be landscaped with native vegetation This project is the first from the revived State Electricity Commission (SEC) under its $1 billion investment in renewable energy infrastructure Co-owned by renewable energy investor Equis Australia the hub is a key part of the SEC’s goal of generating 4.5 gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity As Victoria moves towards 95% renewable energy generation by 2035 building energy storage capacity is crucial for ensuring an affordable and The funding is designed to provide critical infrastructure to support sewer upgrades in the Northern Growth Area and the duplication of Plumpton Road North and Plumpton Road South to support the delivery of new homes. Under the funding requirements for the AIF, Council is required to contribute a minimum of 25 per cent towards the grant. Over the three successful projects this equates to a contribution of $23,598,736. Council’s draft 2024-25 Long Term Financial Plan includes total project budgets - including planned phasing over the life of the projects - in the capital works program. Director Regional Activation John Sidgwick outlined the next steps for project to duplicate Plumpton Road North and Plumpton Road South. “Council will now progress with concept designs and intersections treatments for the Plumpton Road upgrades,” Mr Sidgwick said. “Once the concept plans have been developed, Council will consult with the local community prior to commencing works.” The funding for the three Wagga Wagga projects was announced recently by the Minister for Planning and Open Spaces as part of a wider investment of $137.19 million in the Accelerated Infrastructure Fund program to fund nine regional infrastructure projects, to support the delivery of 24,000 new regional homes. Oh no! It looks like JavaScript is not enabled in your browser. I studied chemistry at university and then got into radiochemistry for medical imaging research After 16 years in that industry it felt like time for a change How and why did you get interested in the wine industry I have been interested in wine since I was young. Our family holidays were always to France where I was introduced to wine at the dinner table. Over the years, I have studied wine through WSET courses and visited wine regions around the world It is a fascinating and never-ending topic to learn about So when I felt like my time was done with medical research wine seemed like the perfect direction to go in Sam Hill: you have to be prepared to get your hands dirty doing a course at Plumpton How and why did you want to do a course at Plumpton was the perfect way to learn about the industry and feed my curiosity I studied part time so I was able to fit it around my job at the time and keep paying the mortgage I enjoyed the course immensely and really enjoyed my “day off” once a week to go and learn about wine production and viticulture I heard about it through applying for jobs in the wine industry and hearing that a qualification from Plumpton was a huge plus on a CV What’s subject did you investigate for your main project and why I decided to study the use of cloches to ripen Riesling in the UK climate Riesling is an exciting grape variety but many people have tried and failed to reliably ripen it in England Riesling’s high acidity means that it often doesn’t reach the required maturity When the opportunity at Beacon Down vineyard came up to experiment with their Riesling vines I knew that it would make an interesting and important project for UK viticulture Sam Hill’s course looked into the possibilities of growing Riesling in the UK It has involved a significant amount of hours in the vineyard First we installed homemade cloches on 500 Riesling vines made from polythene Then I took measurements of temperature and humidity throughout the growing season to measure the impact of the cloches on the microclimate surrounding the vines I monitored maturity levels to see the impact on acidity and sugar What challenges have you had pulling it together The biggest challenge was getting to the vineyard as often as I needed to I worked closely with the vineyard owner Paul Pippard who gave me a lot of support and guidance during the more challenging moments The project was a real pleasure to spend time on and the final results were very positive What do you hope your research will achieve the research in 2019 achieved ripe Riesling grapes that have been used to produce an English Riesling for Beacon Down Secondly I hope that my research has shown that it is not only possible to ripen Riesling in an English vineyard but that by installing cloches on the vines you can significantly increase yield and maturity The potential applications of this treatment are far wider than just ripening Riesling How will you apply what you’ve learnt to your future career I am very keen to be involved in planting unusual varieties in the UK If this process can broaden people’s minds to what can be achieved in the UK then I hope I am very much a part of that I have also learnt a huge amount about the practicalities of working in a vineyard throughout the growing year What would you say to people looking to do a course at Plumpton I would make sure you spend your summer before the course starts wisely get a placement at a vineyard or winery to start to learn the ropes And then take all the opportunities that are offered to you at Plumpton and take full advantage What you are now planning to do after Plumpton I am planning a career in the wine world and would love to have my own vineyard in the UK and to make my own wine with unusual varieties and probably some Riesling Which countries andregions around the world have you visited and most liked I have visited many wine regions around the world but especially enjoyed my time spent in Franciacorta in Italy I had a two month placement there for the 2018 harvest and loved immersing myself in that culture I have a placement in Alsace coming up for the 2020 harvest Sam Hill is keen to follow a career where he can work on developing new grape varieties in the UK Which countries and regions would you most want to go to and why I would love to revisit California to go to the lesser known regions and try the range of Pinot Noir that’s on offer Jura is also on my list because the wines are fascinating and unique but I think that anyone who bucks the trend and forges their own path is inspiring And anyone who takes a chance and dares to plant a vineyard in the UK with our climate I admire greatly That is a very difficult question to answer and maybe a top ten or twenty would be fairer I do love the red wines of central and southern Italy and the white wines of Alsace Well I’m probably drinking the Italian with pizza and the Alsace wines with flammkuchen The Buyer TVClick below to watch The Buyer's library of online debates, videos and webinars. in third Nicholls told Sky Sports Racing: “He surprised me he was happy enough for Jay to ride him because he could see we needed 5lb off the 9lb penalty (for winning at Aintree) – Cobden’s not just a top-class jockey “I’d say it was nearly a career best for him but sometimes when you have 100 grand races like this “Sans Bruit will probably have a holiday now and the other lad will probably run opportunities for residents and local businesses.” with more than 1700 comments made by 1000 participants showing a high level of support for the centre Cr Abboushi said the feedback contributed to The wine industry is expanding rapidly and due to the industry's dynamic nature there is a significant amount of work to be done to progress and challenge the industry particularly from the educational standpoint and the significant role we play in educating and training students Sam Linter says it is up to Plumpton's wine division to help the UK's winemaking industry grow by helping to educate the next generation of viticultural talent we have made some great progress over the last year it was important for me to first settle the team and create cohesion within the department at the start of the academic year.We are in the process of finalising the National Competency Framework through consultations with industry experts and additionally we aim to identify skill gaps and develop courses to meet the evolving needs of the industry I am pleased to report that we have made great strides in achieving these goals and I am looking forward to continuing to contribute to the growth and development of the wine industry What have you been most proud of achieving since arriving last September I think one of my proudest achievements in the last year has been the consolidation and enhancement of our existing initiatives the development and implementation of the National Competency Framework along with the creation of tailored short courses which will be pivotal in addressing skill gaps and meeting the evolving needs of the industry These achievements not only reflect our commitment to academic excellence but also our dedication to preparing individuals for successful careers in the wine sector I’m also delighted to say we are finalising the exploration of planting a new vineyard at the Plumpton site which will be in 2026 The vineyard will not only allow us to increase production for a commercial perspective but also this vineyard will involve incorporating smart agri-tech practices and regenerative techniques The integration of smart agri-tech practices will also transition into our winery operations which will be a significant accomplishment that aligns with our mission to stay at the forefront of industry advancements By embracing the future trends of viticulture we aim to establish Plumpton as a leading institution for training individuals in the wine industry offering hands-on training that combines theoretical knowledge with practical experiences Plumpton is investing in a new vineyard to help its students study new viticultural and sustainable winemaking practices we must mention the recognition through the Queen's Award Winning important part of our education programs is organising field trips and encouraging active engagement with the wine industry and this has been bolstered immensely over the last few years as it is very important to enrich the educational experience by giving students exposure to real-world practices and trends We have also seen the increase of the number of guest lecturers broadening students' perspectives and deepening their understanding of the whole wine business offering valuable insights into the operational dynamics and career paths within the sector The addition of free French language courses as an enhancement for students reflects our commitment to holistic education.” What range of courses are you now offering that are new or have been expanded Plumpton is looking to Officials at Plumpton have expressed a deep frustration at "extreme weather events" after the track lost its third meeting since the start of the year on Monday which had been due to feature the rearranged £60,000 BetGoodwin Sussex Stayers' Handicap Hurdle was called off before the scheduled inspection at 8.30am with the course waterlogged following 23mm of rain in a 16-hour period The abandonment follows on from Plumpton cancelling its Premier raceday featuring the Sussex National and Stayers' Handicap Hurdle on January 5 – again due to waterlogging – and its fixture on January 14 because of frost Clerk of the course Marcus Waters said: "It's been a very tricky start to the year for us as this is our third abandonment of 2025 We seemed to be catching these extreme weather events at the wrong time "We lost the Sussex National on January 5 due to waterlogging when we had over 30mm of rain in the 24 hours beforehand and then the January 14 fixture due to a frozen track when we'd had consecutive nights of -5C where we've had 23mm of rain in a 16-hour period."  Plumpton has staged two fixtures since the start of the year with the Sussex National moved to the track's last meeting on February 10 Trainers Evan Williams and Tom Symonds praised the independently owned track for rearranging the Stayers' Handicap Hurdle for Monday and Waters was understandably disappointed at the latest blow "We worked hard with the BHA to get that race back on and it had a nice field and looked a competitive race so it's frustrating to lose that once again," he said "We've kept a lot of prize-money so we'll have to have a chat internally and see what the options are now Rearranging it once takes a lot of work and going again can be quite tricky "The team has tried very hard to get it on and the track is in good nick but we just can't quite handle the extreme weather events we're seeing." Monday's raceday was also an occasion to help raise funds for Jamie's Farm a charity dedicated to supporting young people at risk of social and academic exclusion "It was a big day hospitality-wise for us because we had 300 guests coming for Jamie's Farm We're very disappointed to lose that event as well." Plumpton's next meeting is due to take place on March 10 the day before the start of the Cheltenham Festival Punchestown's meeting on Monday goes ahead as p[lanned after the track passed a morning inspection The 7.30am inspection was called for on Sunday evening after heavy rain left parts of the course waterlogged the course was deemed raceable with the ground described as heavy soft to heavy in places and the first race due off at 1.30pm Clerk of the course Brendan Sheridan said: "The track at Punchestown is fit for racing and the fixture scheduled for today goes ahead "Following heavy volumes of rain in a short space of time yesterday the track was waterlogged in places but thankfully we had a dry night and the track is now ready for racing "When speaking to Met Eireann this morning they have said we will have a dry morning with showers developing from early afternoon "There is 5-10mm of rain forecast for later today from around 2pm with possibly heavy showers at times during racing All races today will be run on the inside track."  Go Racing this March: it's not all about the Cheltenham Festival  Sign up to receive On The Nose Published on 23 February 2025inBritain Copyright © 2025 Spotlight Sports Group Limited or its licensors, all rights reserved but the page you were trying to view does not exist While his domination of the Grand National and its Scottish cousin might suggest otherwise Willie Mullins greatest strength in depth is still with hurdlers and all six of his runners on Plumpton's valuable Easter Sunday card are over hurdles The combination of a tight track and good ground ought to suit Absurde best He was third in defence of his County Hurdle crown last time having not run between then and his fifth in the Melbourne Cup Both were done for speed at Cheltenham which does not bode all that well for sharper Plumpton Spirit D'Aunou at least wears blinkers in acknowledgement of that Harry Cobden is on Absurde, despite there being a horse in the race for his boss Paul Nicholls. But then Afadil races on the speed and not getting to the front is the reason his run at Aintree last time can be excused The thing with strength in numbers is that it tends to cover most eventualities it is likely to suit at least one of the Mullins squad the likelihood is Absurde's ability to lay up will put him in the best position.Race analysis by Keith Melrose Mullins has had only one runner at Plumpton before but with the British trainers' title hanging in the balance the reigning champion sends six runners on Easter Sunday Odds-on to retain his crown at Sandown on Saturday the Closutton trainer still has ground to make up on Dan Skelton and with two runners in the card's highlight last year's runner-up is not going down without a fight "She hadn't run for a long time before her last run so in a weird way she's entitled to improve for it and hopefully she can go and run well again We'd have loved to have seen more rain for Knickerbockerglory but he's very fresh and always puts his best foot forward."
