A three-storey commercial complex in the heart of the Sanctuary Lakes estate in Point Cook has been approved by VCAT after Wyndham City Council’s decision to refuse the application was overturned The Tribunal set aside the council’s refusal and approved the approval following a hearing in March 2025 Sanctuary Lakes Village Pty Ltd lodged the proposal for 76 Greg Norman Drive Point Cook — a 4,189 square metre parcel of land directly adjacent to the golf course and residential housing The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) granted the planning permit on 30 April 2025 despite strong opposition from nearby residents The application seeks approval for a commercial development that includes a medical centre and permission to use the site for the sale and consumption of liquor The proposal also includes 57 on-site parking spaces located to the rear of the building the permit also allows for the consumption of liquor on the premises which has raised additional concerns from residents about increased noise and changes to the estate’s quiet residential character and VCAT determined that the proposed combination of retail and office services aligns with local and state planning objectives The Tribunal noted the site had been earmarked for development since the early stages of the estate’s creation and supported the need for localised services that would reduce the need for travel outside the community Senior Member Michael Nelthorpe stated the proposal represents a “moderate intensification” that was consistent with the site’s zoning and strategic planning context While he acknowledged resident concerns about traffic he found these issues did not warrant refusal of the application The inclusion of liquor consumption — likely tied to the café component — will require responsible management though detailed conditions around operating hours and noise mitigation are expected to be formalised in the final permit Construction dates have not yet been ignorant of a 10-year-old introvert’s terror at once again having to fit into a new friend group was by far my favourite and eventually became my home suburb Every RAAF base is its own little gated fiefdom a self-sufficient universe manned by soldiers My life was sealed-in but had a vibe of plenty – shops cinemas and swimming pools merged with the dozens of picture-book homes while my stepdad later worked at the RAAF Museum Family fringe benefits for this starry-eyed 10-year-old once included an interstate ride in a Hercules C-130 military transport plane But a radical change came to those sleepy grasslands that were once home to the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation The telltale rumble of air traffic became less frequent replaced by the sounds of nail guns and other power tools as budget house-and-land deals birthed concrete slabs and their protruding wooden ribs Back when a housing deposit wasn’t equal to the GDP of a small nation first homebuyers came in their droves to the affordable bayside suburb just off the Princes Freeway Point Cook’s population exploded from little more than nought to 66,781 at the 2021 census making it Australia’s biggest suburb by population It’s predicted to keep growing to about 82,000 by 2040 Within the megasuburb lies Sanctuary Lakes a manicured enclave with aristocratic airs that the blue-collar Werribians call the “Toorak of the West” It has twice been knocked back by Wyndham council in its attempts to become an official suburb a status surely befitting its waterside mansions and long Built around a 60-hectare man-made lake (Melbourne’s largest) and a Greg Norman-designed 18-hole private golf course the commercial housing estate was a gleaming Valhalla of abundance to this starry-eyed teen So when the opportunity arose years later for a mate and I to score a prized waterfront rental on one of Sanctuary Lakes’ gated man-made islands (conveniently linked to land by a road bridge) we jumped at the opportunity – even though neither of us had a job but my letters and parcels marked me a proud inhabitant of the refined community of Sanctuary Lakes I was kayaking with the swans at sunset and looking down my nose at outsiders realising I’d found myself inside yet another gated realm My builder mates referred to Sanctuary Lakes as Legoland and it does have a very Truman Show vibe to it stringent rules around bins and landscaping all pale and emptily beaming like Stepford Wives with fiery pastels spreading across the softly rippling lake itself dotted with random pelicans and stand-up paddleboarders all of it sharply accented by the occasional roar of resident Lamborghinis while the speed limit mafia mums watch censoriously from their windows As Point Cook grew, we did too, gaining friendly new neighbours from around the world and two new Asian supermarkets. With such a large population, Point Cook has attracted all kinds of titles, including a recent claim to be the mum capital of Australia But perhaps most deserving is its title as the most multicultural suburb in Australia. Point Cook leads the nation in diversity, with residents from 146 different countries including at least 20 people from 86 countries and the greatest range of languages spoken at home (83) Seventy per cent of Point Cookians have both parents born overseas everyone in this rapidly multiplying kingdom is catered for even though getting in and out of the eastern edge of the suburb through the single-lane Point Cook Road remains an absolute horror show during peak hour Public transport has never been superb here and life remains difficult without a car and Williams Landing train station on the other side of the freeway feels ages away my favourite escape has always been the salt flats and adjacent Cheetham Wetlands across Skeleton Creek in Altona Meadows Born from the Victorian government’s purchase of the Cheetham Saltworks that operated here from 1924 to 1990 the wetlands dominate the coastline and provide a vital habitat and conservation area for more than 200 bird species I’ve found myself regularly walking its hard-packed salt pans at dusk tracing the vast deserted coastline as the city glittered across the bay and seabirds screeched above But the true avian stars of Point Cook are Sanctuary Lakes’ swans showing up regularly to snap up the frozen peas or grass I fed them from my backyard They were my favourite thing about Point Cook before I left the island and moved interstate during the COVID years While Sanctuary Lakes’ body corporate fees might keep me out of Legoland I won’t forget the sight of those swans in full flight wide wings kissing the ripples of the late afternoon tide before rising slowly into another gorgeous suburban dusk The Opinion newsletter is a weekly wrap of views that will challenge, champion and inform your own. The issue, first reported by Wyndham TV in 2024 (read more) has sparked significant community interest particularly in Point Cook where residents have long raised concerns about infrastructure lagging behind population growth Cr McIntyre’s motion argued that spending the funds outside Point Cook would be contrary to community expectations and the original intent of the developers who paid the contributions It cited the Planning and Environment Act 1987 which outlines that developer contributions are intended to support infrastructure in the same area where they are collected A Council memorandum dated 16 October 2023 had previously identified a list of potential projects in Point Cook that could be funded from these contributions Shaw and Singh voted for the motion to be put without debate and then voted it down Our community deserves transparency and fairness Developer contributions should be spent where they were collected—not redirected elsewhere I will continue fighting to ensure Point Cook gets the investment it was promised.” meaning the legacy funds may now be distributed more broadly across the municipality rather than being exclusively used in Point Cook The outcome has been met with disappointment by some residents and community leaders who argue that Point Cook still faces major infrastructure needs and should benefit directly from funds raised through local development Council has not yet provided further details on how or where the legacy funds will be allocated A new Aldi supermarket and retail precinct could soon be built at 421 Hacketts Road, Point Cook with Wyndham City Council’s Planning Committee set to consider the proposal at its upcoming meeting The $9.2 million development includes a supermarket along with a slight reduction in car parking requirements the project will provide much-needed retail services for the growing Point Cook West community A previous permit was granted in April 2020 and the developer did not apply for an extension within the required timeframe they have submitted a new application to secure planning approval once again • Supermarket and Dining Options: The proposal includes an Aldi supermarket as the main tenant • Car Parking: The site will have 98 on-site parking spaces which is eight fewer than typically required Council officers believe this reduction is reasonable due to strong pedestrian and cycling access as well as the likelihood of multi-purpose trips to the centre • Neighbourhood Impact: The supermarket’s rear wall will cause some overshadowing of a property on Buddaken Walk but planners say the overall impact is minor and within acceptable limits • Pedestrian Access: A missing shared path along Hacketts Road will be completed as part of the development • Liquor Sales: The supermarket will include a packaged liquor section with sales restricted to store hours and no on-site consumption The application was not required to be advertised to the public as it meets the Point Cook West Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) given the site’s proximity to an oil pipeline The Planning Committee will decide whether to approve the application at its 11 February 2025 meeting bringing new shopping and dining options to Point Cook West A Point Cook hiker who suffered severe injuries after falling six metres in the Cathedral Range State Park was reunited today with the emergency crews who rescued him The incident occurred while the man was hiking a 1500m mountain with five companions on Saturday 43-year-old Stoj Jovevski sustained serious injuries to his back and wrist His companions promptly alerted emergency services The State Emergency Service’s high angle team were the first to arrive at the scene followed by an Ambulance Victoria flight paramedic who provided immediate medical assistance Due to the rough terrain and surrounding trees it was considered too dangerous to winch the man from the accident location while carrying him out on a stretcher was nearly impossible The Victoria Police Search and Rescue Squad known for their expertise in complex vertical rescues They established a multi-directional roping system to safely move the man in three separate stages and Ambulance Victoria members was crucial in keeping the man stable during the operation the man was moved to a location suitable for air extraction The Victoria Police Airwing winched the man to safety around 8pm He was subsequently transported by Ambulance Victoria to a Melbourne hospital where he received treatment for several weeks the team of over 20 emergency services personnel hiked two hours to reach the bottom of the mountain “This man is incredibly lucky to have survived such a fall we had highly experienced emergency services close by to assist him and put him in the best position possible for us to be able to get him out It is extremely gratifying to help someone in their hour of need and see them return to good health.” also highlighted the importance of cooperation among emergency services “This job is a prime example of just how important it is for emergency services to be able to work together We could not have achieved this result without the help from our volunteer agencies and paramedics who located the patient and kept him stable until police search and rescue crews arrived This type of work – while complex and highly technical – is what our specialist squads train for Their experience and skills are evident in jobs like this where every move counts.” Detectives from the Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit are currently seeking public assistance following a carjacking incident that took place on the Monash Freeway in Kooyong over the weekend A stolen Toyota Prius was reportedly seen speeding and driving erratically outbound on the freeway before it crashed into barriers near Glenferrie Road at around 6.15am on Saturday It is reported that five teenagers emerged from the Prius Two of the teenagers allegedly attacked the woman leading to a struggle before they forcibly took her car keys then fled the scene in her blue Toyota sedan The woman sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics The Toyota Prius involved in the incident was reportedly stolen during an aggravated carjacking in Point Cook on 24 April A group of four male offenders is believed to have approached a vehicle parked on Adelphi Boulevard while the driver was entering a fast-food restaurant at about 9.50pm A female passenger in the vehicle was threatened with an edged weapon but she managed to escape without physical injury A witness described the Point Cook event as “a full-on carjacking” involving “four guys in hoodies and ski masks.” They added “Very confronting and sorry to the poor couple that were pleading with the scum not to steal their car Plenty of people around but these [offenders] don’t care — flew off with the doors still open in the space of about 60 seconds.” So far, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Construction has commenced on a new $25 million police station in Point Cook but growing community frustration over dwindling police numbers and repeat offenders running rampant has cast doubt on the effectiveness of the Allan Labor Government’s approach to crime the new facility is expected to be operational by mid-next year the project includes a single-story station It is one of four new advanced stations under construction While the Labor Government boasts about spending $423 million since 2014 on building and upgrading police stations as part of a $4.5 billion policing investment locals argue that bricks and mortar won’t fix Victoria’s broken justice system Wyndham residents have repeatedly voiced their anger at the revolving-door bail system which sees repeat offenders back on the streets almost as quickly as police can arrest them With Victoria’s police force facing recruitment struggles and resources stretched thin the announcement has been met with scepticism Many are questioning the timing of the project with a state election looming and Labor scrambling to appease growing discontent over public safety Despite claims of a record investment in policing the harsh reality is that police numbers are down calls for stricter bail laws and tougher sentencing have been routinely ignored by a government more focused on PR than real solutions Police Minister Anthony Carbines defended the investment so does the need for police resources – this new station is another investment in community safety in the west.” Yet Many argue that without a functioning justice system and stronger police presence a new building will do little to protect the community Member for Point Cook Mathew Hilakari attempted to reassure locals “The new police station will provide better resources for our officers—giving them everything they need to do their critical work in keeping our community safe.” However critics point out that without enough police to staff these new stations the investment is little more than an expensive facade the message is clear: Labor’s soft-on-crime policies are failing Victorians The government can build all the stations it wants but without real action on crime and justice reform residents will continue to feel unsafe in their own communities A Melbourne couple who are celebrating a massive $30 million Powerball win have opened up about the quirky technique they used to choose their winning numbers.    A husband and wife from Melbourne's south-west have become instant multi-millionaires after a "dream" helped deliver them a massive Powerball prize.  The Point Cook couple claimed more than $30 million in Thursday's Powerball draw thanks to their winning division one entry plus PowerHit which delivered 19 division two wins Some of the numbers chosen by the couple were decided upon after the man dreamt about them "I had a dream about these numbers – 1 but I didn't remember them all," the man said "I've always had these numbers in my head so I put them and a few others on a ticket a few years ago The man was informed of his newfound wealth through a phone call from officials shortly after the evening draw and had to wake his wife up to deliver the news He described it as "the best call I've ever had" and said while the millions of dollars will be "lifechanging" The couple are also looking to invest their winnings.  We'll still go to work tomorrow," the man said We'll speak to a financial advisor and invest The main numbers from Thursday night's draw were 26 A couple from Point Cook was incredibly lucky last night as their Powerball ticket was the only division one entry nationwide in Powerball draw 1502 The couple also managed to score division two 19 times bringing their total winnings to an impressive $30,440,758.20 the couple was contacted right after the draw to deliver the exciting news I’ll have to wake my wife up for this She’s asleep but she will be wanting to hear this!” His wife It was later revealed that the winning husband had marked the ticket with numbers he had dreamt of – 1 and 22 – but he couldn’t remember the remaining ones “I’ve always had these numbers in my head so I put them and a few others on a ticket a few years ago hoping they would pay off.” He shared plans on using their newfound fortune to find financial stability and invest wisely for the future so this means we are well and truly set!” The husband declared which is known as the official home of Australia’s lotteries The lucky numbers in Powerball draw 1502 were revealed to be 26 with the all-important Powerball number being 3 there was only one division one winning entry nationwide and it belonged to this couple from Victoria they can use their incredible windfall to lead a life free from financial worries and enjoy the little things This story was one of the top stories from 2024 and was originally published in April The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is planning to demolish more buildings at the historic Point Cook RAAF Base with public consultation on the proposal currently underway A total of 19 buildings are earmarked for demolition after being deemed either surplus to requirements or a safety risk including Bellman hangars RAAF standard huts Public consultation opened on March 27 and closes on April 11 Defence first proposed to demolish the 19 buildings in 2019 but the significant heritage value of the base delayed those plans RAAF Base Point Cook was the first military aviation base in Australia and the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force in 1921 It is listed on the National (NHL) and Commonwealth Heritage Lists and more than 100 buildings at the base are heritage listed including some of those set to be demolished including RAAF standard huts and Bellman hangars A report prepared by the ADF into the proposed demolitions included a heritage impact assessment that found the removal of 15 WWII associated buildings was “likely to degrade or damage one or more National Heritage values” and “permanently destroy remove and substantially alter’ the fabric of a Commonwealth Heritage Place.” Despite this the heritage impact assessment still approved the demolitions “The proposed action will not cause one or more of the historic NHL values of RAAF Base Point Cook to be lost given the contributory nature of the elements proposed for removal or relocation,” said the report “The cumulative impact of loss on the broader NHL environment is diluted somewhat by the fact that the buildings under assessment form part of a larger collection of WWII buildings that demonstrate values at Base-wide level.” That hasn’t satisfied air force veteran Graham Malcom who was based at Point Cook in 1968 and again in 1973/74 The former air force fireman who now lives in Tasmania said these latest demolition plans were another example of ADF’s cavalier attitude toward sthe history of the Point Cook base “There’s been a considerable amount removed and the stealthy way that they’ve gone about this latest round of demolitions shows that to them Point Cook does not represent anything of great value Defence has considered selling the Point Cook base on numerous occasions Mr Malcom would like to see them relinquish control similar to the Sydney Harbour Trust that which manages old naval bases in Sydney The ADF and federal government were contacted Glen Waverley, in the city’s south-east, took third spot at almost $940 million across 495 sales, followed by Tarneit ($888 million, 1375 sales) and Kew (more than $814 million, 245 sales). CoreLogic head of Australian research Eliza Owen said the contrast between suburbs on the list underscores a growing demand for more affordable housing options. “There’s a real desperation and a really high demand for property prices within the $600,000 to $700,000 range. Whereas buyers are just dropping out of that multi-million dollar market because the money isn’t there,” she said. “It does show the importance of having access to affordable housing and maybe changing up some of these more exclusive markets to include different types of housing options and greater accessibility to the housing market.” The prestigious Melbourne suburbs where house prices are falling most Will Melbourne's house prices keep dropping in 2025? Or will prices recover? Melbourne tipped as a hotspot for 2025 despite poor performance “Those suburbs are no stranger to the top sales rankings … [however] the high-interest rate environment has definitely hit demand harder at the high end,” Owen said. Owen observed a 20 per cent year-on-year rise in sales for Point Cook, fuelled by ongoing developments likely to sustain its upward trajectory. “It is one of those more peripheral areas of Melbourne that has seen a lot of new development … People can take advantage of a great coastal location, but also it’s a relatively affordable price point for those looking for a family home.” Principal at Ray White Point Cook, Amar Thakkar said his suburb’s high sales volume comes as no surprise. “[Point Cook] is the highest transacting suburb in Victoria. It has been for quite a few years, because it’s massive, like [the] number of homes are just incredible.” 3 Baths3 ParkingView listing His buyers are typically aged from 30 to 40 years old and families looking to upgrade. “You’ve got absolutely everything in terms of amenities, schools, proximity to the CBD, and the airport … We get a lot of home buyers moving from within the Wyndham corridor, it’s the natural progression,” he said. Thakkar said despite interest rate hikes tempering demand, properties are still selling relatively quickly within 45 to 50 days. He says owner-occupied homes still attract 20 to 40 groups through inspections over four weeks, and attract multiple bidders. “Buyers are quite cautious when it comes to putting their hands in the pocket now. But when we speak to buyers, people have understood and adjusted the expectations based on the borrowing capacity.” While affordable areas thrived, premium suburbs like Brighton and Kew faced different challenges. Fewer transactions occurred due to a stalemate between buyers and vendors, according to Belle Property Brighton and St Kilda principal director Sam Inan. “Economic conditions in Victoria, the interest rate rises nationally, [it’s] just depleted the buyer pool in general, so there’s less buyers for each property … You’ve got vendors who don’t need to sell at a lower price … And buyers who are also holding their ground because they believe it’s not going to get better overnight. “So those numbers should be a lot higher in terms of total dollar value if the market were stronger.” Inan said because vendors in Brighton were holding firm on price expectations, there have been fewer sales but smaller discounts. “That helps to maintain the [high median house price in Brighton] to a degree more than other suburbs where the discounts might be greater.” As for the future, Sam expects transactions to increase next year, as vendors become more willing to sell at discounted prices, but he remains sceptical. “I think one rate cut, possibly even two, won’t bring enough local buyers back into the fray. I just don’t think there’s enough money back in the system with one or two quarter point rate cuts to bring enough local buyers back into the market.” The information on this website is intended to be
