Fraser Coast Regional Council has endorsed key design principles and priority projects to enhance the Hervey Bay Esplanade
ensuring improvements focus on accessibility
safety and preserving the natural character of the coastline
At its meeting today (Wednesday 26 March 2025)
Council noted the Hervey Bay Esplanade Preliminary Concept and Point Vernon Preliminary Concept as guiding documents and approved an initial list of priority projects for future budget consideration
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said years of community input helped shape the design principles and priorities to align with local needs
“The Esplanade is one of the most loved and recognised features of the Fraser Coast
It defines our region’s identity and reputation as a great place to live
“These guiding principles and priority projects provide a practical
staged approach to making the Esplanade safer
more accessible and more enjoyable while protecting its natural beauty
“Council is committed to strategic growth and liveability
ensuring the Fraser Coast remains a region where older residents can age comfortably
and younger generations see a bright future to live
Cr O’Keefe said the upgrades will enhance the Esplanade without changing its character
“We want to improve the Esplanade without losing the charm that makes it so special,” he said
“By starting with priority upgrades as funding becomes available
we can begin making real progress while continuing to explore future opportunities.”

Blink and you’ll miss it,” people joke about driving through Mont Vernon
slicing through hay fields and woodland while hills rise in the distance
Verdant pastures give way to splashes of autumn color and winter’s icy treachery that has waylaid many a traveler
The sign welcomes visitors to Mont Vernon as they travel north up Mont Vernon’s Grand Hill on Route 13
While the view from Mont Vernon’s hill is one of the town’s most spectacular
there are other wonders to be found in this community of nearly 2,700 people tucked between Milford
Mont Vernon has an outsized hold on some of the area’s natural and cultural assets that draw people here
whether they come for a morning hike or stay a lifetime
“It just has that quintessential New England feel to it — Main Street
It’s really picture-perfect,” says Dan Bellemore
the town’s sole retail establishment.
Besides visitors from around the state and nation
tourists come from “all over the world,” including China
“We had the Brazilian bike team in here,” Bellemore adds
noting it’s a popular stopping point for motorcycle and bicycle groups traveling Route 13.
That’s the appeal of Mont Vernon.”
The town has its own “Purgatorio” hidden deep in the woods
Hikers and seekers from far and wide make the descent to see Purgatory Falls plunge through the granite chasm
Legend has it the devil even visited it and left a molten impression of his footprint
The falls were a popular attraction during the height of the town’s resort hotel era in the late 1800s
How to get to Purgatory Falls remains one of the most commonly-asked questions at the general store
The Pomeroys operate the town’s remaining dairy cow farm which
according to the New Hampshire dairy industry
And Julie Whitcomb and Matt Gelbwaks run Blackeyed Susan Sheep Dairy
The married couple previously operated Julie’s Happy Hens
a 3,000-bird chicken farm that they closed to transition to sheep in 2024.
“It hearkens back to the days gone by when you could go to the farm
People told us they came and bought eggs from us because this is what grandmother’s farm used to be like,” Gelbwaks says
And residents salute their agrarian past at Lamson Farm Day held each year at the former 310-acre dairy farm
which the town bought when it ceased operating in 1975
who co-owns the Mont Vernon General Store with Mike Wallenius
The store is in the center of Mont Vernon’s historic district and is the only retail establishment in town
It’s a popular stopping point for both locals and out-of-town visitors
Aspiring artists once studied at the village watercolor school operated by Phoebe Flory
The town is widely known for the annual “Messiah Sing!” held at the Mont Vernon Congregational Church
About 120 singers from as far away as Massachusetts and seven-piece professional orchestra perform Handel’s powerful oratorio.
“The effort … to bring that joyful noise at the beginning of the Christmas season is what we’re all about,” says publicity and staging manager Anne Dodd of the event that began in 1988
Many townspeople have sung in it at least once
She moved here in 1962 after she married Alwyn Carleton
a son of one of Mont Vernon’s founding families
Mont Vernon was a quiet town of about 500 to 600 people when the couple settled at the crest of the hillside farm where Al Carleton’s parents raised dairy cattle and chickens
but people were friendly and always pulled together when something needed to be done
The sense of community and raw natural beauty are what she loved most.
While Al was a skilled hunter and outdoorsman
Eloise never fired a gun until one day early in their marriage
She sat in the car reading a book while Al “was shooting those stupid rats running around the Mont Vernon dump,” she recalls
and Eloise became certified hunter safety training instructors and hunted in the surrounding woods with family and friends for decades
Mont Vernon has changed a lot in recent years
busier and is much more of a “bedroom town.” What does she miss most about the way it used to be
“I loved the trees and the close proximity to the woods,” adds Eloise
but still calls Mont Vernon home and visits often
“Those of us who like it a little bit wilder don’t like it quite as well (now)

Residents were stunned by the brutality of the random attack

“It was not something you would expect in a small town
The year the Carletons married was a turning point for Mont Vernon
whose history has been a series of boons and busts since it broke away from Amherst and incorporated as a separate town in 1803
The town’s population hit a high point of 763 residents in 1830
then steadily declined to about 300 people in the 1920s-1930s
The town rallied from prior downturns largely by tapping in to advances in transportation and technology
It was on the cusp of another comeback.

The Rorabachers settled in the former South Schoolhouse on Old Milford Road

Community groups and activities either have fallen away or been subsumed by government

“What’s happening in Mont Vernon right now is if you don’t make a lot of money
you can’t afford to live in Mont Vernon,” Rorabacher Szok says

Others say they hope the town can heal from the rancor and factions can coexist again
“What I think is still special is that we are a small
intimate town that has a fair degree of pride over who we are and what we’ve been…There is no reason why we should not celebrate the fact that we are an archetypical New England town,” Gelbwaks says
He sees the town at a “tipping point” if the harm is not healed.

Not that Marion’s boys’ basketball team beating Class 3A 10th-ranked Mount Vernon was either of those things Tuesday night
It was just the way the Wolves went about doing it
You’re down by 16 points in the first half and win by 19
“We needed this,” said Marion Coach Pete Messerli
“That’s the best we’ve played all year ..
The best team ball we’ve played on both ends.”
This was a 33-17 game with 2:15 to go in the second quarter
But Marion ended the half on an 8-1 run and used that momentum to completely dominate the final two quarters
A Jaryn Griffith 3-pointer put the Wolves (6-8) up for good
Tait Rahe’s 3 early in the fourth quarter put Marion up 51-41
The Wolves were 15 of 28 from the field in the second half
“We started moving the ball really well
a sophomore wing who had a team-high 19 points
“We just started playing together a lot
It was just a really good team game.”
The Mustangs were 4 of 24 from the field in the second half (16.7 percent)
Center Joe Briesemeister led MV (11-2) with 23 points
Leading scorer Kellen Haverback was held to nine points
“Our defense was tremendous,” Messerli said
which turned into great team offense on the other end
making the extra pass for open shots.”
Things generally have been uneven for the Wolves (6-8)
The hope is this game will be a season changer
“I think this just starts it,” Rahe said
“We’ve got lots of momentum now
We’ve got a big game on Friday (at West Delaware)
and we’re just going to go back out there and keep playing hard
Brooks Coates (13) and Austin Goodrich (10) also scored double figures for Marion
MOUNT VERNON (46): Kellen Haverback 3-13 2-2 9
3-point goals - Mount Vernon 3-20 (Haverback 1-5

Link copiedShareShare articleQueensland police are now talking with New South Wales officers about the disappearance of 33-year-old Hervey Bay woman Lisa Maree Keem.
A body was found in the Maria River State Forest, south of Kempsey in New South Wales, over the weekend.
The body is believed to be female and was discovered by a bushwalker.
The death is being treated as suspicious and police are trying to identify the victim.
Queensland Police say they do not know how long it will take to find out if the body is that of Lisa Maree Keem.
Detective Acting Superintendent John Maloney says DNA testing is needed.
Ms Keem, 33, was last seen at her Point Vernon home in Hervey Bay in south-east Queensland on Saturday afternoon.
She had just finished work at her dog grooming business.
The badly burned body was discovered by a local man in the Maria River State Forest, on Sunday afternoon.
NSW detectives say she was about 30-years-old, 162 centimetres tall with fair hair and a slim build.
They believe the woman's body had been in the forest for less than three days when the man, travelling along the Railway Dam Road, found her.
NSW detectives are asking to hear from anyone who used the remote bush road between last Friday and Sunday, or who noticed any suspicious activity around the Maria River State Forest.
Earlier today, Queensland police said they are trying to contact Ms Keem's ex-husband, who lives in Sydney.
Queensland police say they are exploring reports Ms Keem and her ex-husband were fighting over property.
Investigators say they would like to speak to him further.

The pandemic isn’t over — at least when it comes to restaurants
The owners of the Local Oyster announced Monday they are shutting down the eateries’ branches in Mount Vernon Marketplace and Locust Point
a wrenching decision they chalked up to the lasting effects of COVID
“Things haven’t been good [in the restaurant industry] since 2019,” said Zack Mills, partner at Chef Shucker Farmer Inc.
attributed the closures to the pandemic’s impact and an ongoing downturn in sales
the owners “had to make a call before things got worse.”

Folks longing for the taste of the former West Point Market's original cheese spreads can now get their fill
The venerable market's original recipes for two of its spreads are being sold at the cafe at Springside Athletic Club in Bath
They were two of West Point Market's most popular flavors that the upscale market used to sell in West Akron
who was the market's third-generation owner
The South of the Border spread is expected to be offered starting this week
"Those recipes were my dad's [Russ Vernon's] recipes."
former cheese shop manager who worked at West Point Market for 30 years
has collaborated with Springside cafe operator Demi Boyazis to re-create the handmade cheese spreads
using the exacting standards of West Point's original recipes and sourcing the same ingredients
The development process for the spreads took about a month
with Springside first offering them for sale in December
There are some trade secrets to making the spreads
"It's not just the recipe but how you make it with the preparation of it."
Selling homemade spreads in small batches is special
Not many people offer a good cheese spread — not homemade," Vernon said
Fond memories of West Point MarketThe family-owned grocery store closed in the Wallhaven area of Akron in 2015
A smaller location that followed was open in Fairlawn from 2016 to 2018
"We've had requests all along to offer some of our West Point Market favorites," said Vernon
West Point Market farewell:West Point Market calling it quits after 82 years in the Akron area
A new billboard in Montrose promoting Springside also has the West Point Market logo on it
Vernon is collaborating on the spreads with Springside owner Brian Steere
who has fond memories of West Point Market from growing up in West Akron
"I grew up a big fan of West Point and particularly the spreads
The bar cheese was my favorite so that was the first one we tried to make," Steere said
"With such an indelible impact West Point Market made on the Akron community
I was inspired and determined to revive the Akron icon's beloved classic recipes."
Steere is co-president and CFO at the family-owned Steere Enterprises in Tallmadge
who began working at West Point in the '80s
It was Stahl and Boles who put Steere and Vernon in touch with each other
"I would say that she [Boles] helped us perfect the cheese spreads," Steere said
Vernon said Springside is selling all the spreads the cafe can make now and he and Steere will be ramping up production to meet demand
Vernon, who helps to merchandise and market the spreads, also will sell them at Beau's Market & Deli in Copley
with production and packaging continuing to happen with Boyazis at Springside
It's the perfect spot," Vernon said of Beau's Market
More:Beau's Market & Deli expands specialty foods, wines, cheeses at former Shisler's location
he and Vernon plan to offer some favorite West Point cookies
chocolate chip and peanut butter; and prepared salads
"We're hoping to get traffic from the outside" to the Springside cafe
"There's sort of a plan to slowly release more recipes."
The spreads are sold during Springside Athletic Club hours
Steere and Vernon have also been talking about finding a bigger space to sell the West Point Market items in a prime retail location
Vernon has been offering the legendary West Point Market triple-layer brownies over the past three years
The exclusive retailer for the brownies by the piece is Pandora Cupcakes in Montrose and Tallmadge
bakes 300 to 400 brownies each week at the Montrose Pandora and also delivers them to the Tallmadge location

The former store's most popular brownie is not called a "Killer" brownie anymore
since another company trademarked the name

“I say the future looks bright because we aren’t done yet here in Penticton.”
Around 100 people took in the festive event on Sunday
The Vernon Avenue hotel is located in the city’s new North Gateway and will help draw more conventions to Penticton

the hotel will include a 100-seat restaurant
A well-known local restaurant owner has confirmed he will be bringing a new eatery to the hotel and details will be released soon
“We’ve waited for a facility like this to be built in this location not years but decades,” said Penticton Mayor Julius Bloomfield at the ribbon cutting

“We’re being hammered for being a nice place to come.”
That was just one point Vernon Coun. Brian Quiring made Monday as he brought up concerns over the province's recently announced short-term rental regulations
Quiring said the goal of the legislation is to address the lack of attainable housing across the province
a large number of rentals that will be kiboshed under the new legislation are not attainable housing
for somebody that needs attainable housing
It's a 30-minute drive and the property
really,” Quiring said during Monday's council meeting
He said the entire city falls under the legislation
Quiring would like to see the province communicate with Vernon’s planning department and give the city a chance to identify pre-planned resort areas
saying contacting the province should offer a chance to share concerns over the legislation
“Bottom line is we have several properties within the City of Vernon (where) we already allow short-term rentals to ..
we've gone through the painstaking process to allow that,” said Gares
Council heard from director of community infrastructure and development Terry Barton that it will be a few months before his department fully understands the scope of the legislation
Barton said significant housing legislation is imminent from Victoria
and sending a letter could also be used to address the future
“This is going to be legislation that impacts parking regulations
sixplexes The scope of this is very significant
and the way the premier is going about this legislation will be very similar to what we're seeing with the short-term regulation,” said Barton
“A letter now can be a little bit flexible and proactive in terms of advocating Vernon’s position in regards to some of those larger housing changes that have yet to be revealed that will certainly be coming over the coming weeks.”
Council largely agreed that the new legislation would have a negative impact on the city with its reliance on tourism
hotels on the water and/or hotels with suites were all brought up
It was also noted that Vernon sees a number of travelling nurses throughout the year who rely on short-term rentals while working in the city
Council agreed to take a more robust look at the issue at its next meeting
