Renewal SA is seeking Expressions of Interest from property developers to build up to 10 rental homes in Port Pirie to house key workers in healthcare
The state government is offering up to $1 million in capital and “guaranteed returns” as part of what the infrastructure agency is calling an “innovative housing investment opportunity”
Developers will finance and build the homes according to parameters set by Renewal SA
and the homes will then be rented back to the state government with a minimum 10-year lease commitment
maintenance agreements and make-good provisions at the end of the lease
The delivery model aims to build confidence in regional housing investment while offering stable returns for those partnering with the government
Renewal SA’s director of the Office for Regional Housing
“Through the Regional Key Worker Housing Scheme pilot project
the state government financed and built key worker houses throughout the regions,” he said
“We are currently in the process of selling several of these dwellings to private investors
with ongoing government leasing arrangements secured
we aim to stimulate developer-led direct private investment in key worker housing
We are encouraging the industry to take the first step by providing long-term leases backed by the state government.”
Renewal SA hopes the new homes will help alleviate housing supply problems at Port Pirie
The city was selected as a trial site for the opportunity because of the area’s high demand for government workforce housing
strategic proximity to increasing mining activities in the state’s north
dailySouth Australian Business Chamber research last year highlighted a lack of population growth at Port Pirie
paired with a need for housing and supporting infrastructure
“The region is experiencing a significant housing shortage that the state government is seeking to address,” Hunt said
“By offering additional investment to help with the cost of creating services allotments
compounding residential housing growth within the town.”
Renewal SA said investment contributions would be capped at $50,000 per additional allotment
offering up to a maximum of $1 million in total for internal road
“We know one of the biggest costs of development in the regions is getting land ready to build on
which can be a significant deterrent for projects or investments to get off the ground,” Hunt said
“We’re working to reduce that upfront cost to ensure land development can get underway.”

Port Augusta and Whyalla – to host the Club’s annual Community Camp and pre-season internal trial game

an open training and fan signing session and players will deliver the Crows Foundation’s mental health and education programs to local schools
the Club’s regional visits will continue in Port Augusta in 2026 and Whyalla in 2027
Crows CEO Tim Silvers acknowledged it was sometimes more challenging for regional members and fans to watch the team train or attend games
“We are very fortunate to have supporters all over the state and this new partnership with Spencer Gulf Cities allows us to build greater connections and relationships with fans
partners and the wider football community across this really important region,” Silvers said
“In addition to delivering our community programs
Crows fans will have the opportunity to watch our internal trial game which is a really important hit-out in preparation for the start of the season.”
Port Pirie Mayor and Spencer Gulf Cities Chair Leon Stephens said the regional cities were excited about the three-year partnership
“The big attraction for us was the broad range of activities with a focus on community
our sporting clubs and schools,” Mayor Stephens said
“The social and economic impacts for our towns that this partnership will deliver will be tremendous

Port Pirie Hospital’s $15.6 million upgrade includes a brand-new Emergency Department
Port Pirie Hospital is getting a major upgrade
with a brand-new Emergency Department (ED) currently under construction as part of the State Government’s $15.6 million investment in regional healthcare
To make emergency care more accessible and improve facilities for the local community
this is the biggest development at the hospital since the GP Plus Health Care Centre opened in 2013
The new ED will be larger and more modern than the current one
and a new entrance with patient admission and consulting areas
Designed to enhance the patient experience and improve infection control
the new facility is a major step forward for emergency care in the region
The layout incorporates lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic
ensuring the space is built to support both patient safety and the resilience of the health system
ambulance and visitor access to the existing main hospital building and emergency department will be unaffected
parking at the hospital and in surrounding streets may be more limited
the helipad at Port Pirie Hospital is also being upgraded to improve landing space and streamline patient transfers
Also in development is a brand-new Clinical Simulation Training Laboratory to help train health workers
and a new Skin Cancer Clinic to provide comprehensive skin checks
The State Government’s investment in the Port Pirie Hospital upgrades is part of their ongoing commitment to building a bigger health system for regional South Australia
This plan involves improving regional hospitals
and ensuring regional communities have better access to health care closer to home
So far, upgrades have been planned, initiated, or completed at hospitals in Gawler, Kangaroo Island, Keith, Mount Barker
Regional residents will also benefit from the State Government’s investment in remote and virtual care programs
which aim to provide hospital-level care in the comfort of a patient’s own home or local health service

Man charged with failure to take reasonable steps to mitigate serious harm suffered by his ten-year-old dog with a host of medical issues.
An RSPCA South Australia inspector first attended the defendant’s property on 30 April 2024 responding to a cruelty report about a small white terrier with lesions that appeared infected and smelt terrible. The inspector was informed by the defendant that the male dog, named Lin Tan, had died a month earlier as the result of a stroke.
On 13 May 2024, RSPCA SA received a cruelty report regarding concern for a severely matted dog. On 4 June 2024, an RSPCA SA inspector attended the defendant’s new address, and his 77-year-old mother answered the door with a small white dog that she referred to as Lin Tan. As well as being severely matted, the dog had a black substance around his eyes and overgrown nails on his hind feet. The defendant was issued a formal warning to seek veterinary treatment for the dog by 11 June 2024.
On the 11 June 2024, the inspector followed up with the local vet and was advised that although an appointment had been booked, the defendant never attended.
RSPCA SA Chief Inspector Andrew Baker said the defendant had chosen to ignore his dog’s clear need for veterinary treatment.
“We remind pet owners to take immediate action when their animals are in need,” he said.
“If you are a pet owner, it is your responsibility to take care of your animal and seek vet treatment if needed – failure to do so is unacceptable and cruel.”
Lin Tan was forfeited to RSPCA SA and has now been adopted by his foster carer.
Under SA’s Animal Welfare Act, the maximum penalty for animal cruelty is $20,000 or two years’ imprisonment. For an aggravated cruelty offence, the maximum penalty is $50,000 or four years’ imprisonment.
RSPCA South Australia is the state’s only animal welfare charity with inspectors empowered to prosecute animal cruelty under SA’s Animal Welfare Act.
Members of the public who witness animal cruelty or neglect are urged to immediately call RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty report hotline on 1300 477 722.
RSPCA SA calling for information to assist investigation
RSPCA South Australia is appealing for public information after seven newborn puppies were found abandoned in a washing basket near the corner of Geddes Road and Warnertown Road
the puppies appear to be Kelpie or Staffordshire Bull Terrier crosses
though due to their young age and lack of background information
A concerned member of the public discovered the puppies in Port Pirie and took them to the local council. Thanks to the swift response of South Australia Cat Rescue, the puppies were safely transferred into the care of RSPCA South Australia foster carers, where they are now receiving essential round-the-clock care.
RSPCA SA Head of Animal Welfare, Andrea Lewis described the incident as a deliberate act of cruelty and urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify those responsible.
“These puppies were left completely vulnerable, with no food, warmth, or care. Abandoning animals like this is not only cruel but also illegal. We need the community’s help to ensure those responsible are held accountable,” she said.
RSPCA South Australia is urging anyone with information to contact the 24-hour cruelty hotline on 1300 4 777 22.
Once the puppies are old enough, they will be placed up for adoption. Those interested in giving these puppies a loving home are encouraged to monitor RSPCA South Australia’s website and social media channels for updates.
