Tracey hit a brick wall in Campbell-Gillard
Ross McCrorie now has five goals for Bristol City this season
Bristol City came back from two goals down to draw with Preston North End as they earned a place in the Championship play-offs for the first time in 17 years while the visitors secured their status in the division for next season
With Blackburn and Millwall failing to win at Sheffield United and Burnley
the point proved academic in terms of the Robins' place in the top six but did mean they drop below Coventry City to set up a semi-final against the Blades
Luton's heavy defeat at The Hawthorns meant they stayed up with points to spare
Preston had taken what appeared a commanding lead with goals either side of half-time from Emil Riis and Milutin Osmajic
both strikers giving the Robins defence a torrid afternoon throughout
But City responded impressively with Ross McCrorie meeting a Nahki Wells cross and
not long after Jason Knight struck the face of the crossbar
the Scotland international delivered a fine equaliser for his second goal
Follow Saturday's Championship reaction
With pressure on both teams it was Preston who undeniably showed greater purpose early on with a couple of miscued attempts from Robbie Brady
the midfielder slicing a volley well wide and then striking a powerful attempt over the crossbar
City tried to respond through Wells who drove a low shot wide of the near post after Scott Twine's sharp lay-off
but the visitors were proving a frustrating obstacle to the Robins attempts to pass their way through to goal
With Stuart McCall patrolling the touchline
as Paul Heckingbottom serves a two-match touchline ban
North End were compact and stayed disciplined
forcing City to continually pass along the edge of the 18-yard box
As they imposed a degree of control on the game however
Preston struck with Osmajic beating Rob Dickie in a 50/50
advancing towards the box and then playing in Kaine Kesler-Hayden to his right
The wing-back cut inside onto his left foot but his attempt was deflected wide by the recovering McCrorie
Brady dropped it straight onto the head of Riis who outmuscled Dickie and converted from close range
It very nearly got even better for the visitors as Brady found further space to cut inside and bend a fine effort around the outstretched arm of Max O'Leary but also the far post
City were looking for signs of life as news of Blackburn's goal at Sheffield United filtered through and Max Bird came close to conjuring an equaliser as he unleashed a dipping drive that looked destined for the top corner only to take the slightest of deflections
But Osmajic's physicality was a problem for the home defence all afternoon
and the Montenegrin was sent clean through just after the hour mark before sliding a finish under O'Leary
Yu Hirakawa had an attempt deflected wide but the volume intensified significantly when Wells was played in down the right and
clipped a cross for McCrorie to head in at the far post unmarked
Knight very nearly delivered a quickfire equaliser with a rising drive that beat Cornell but not the crossbar
The Ashton Gate faithful didn't have to wait long for that important second as Knight threaded a pass into McCrorie who had drifted infield and finished with confidence meaning the mayhem was now among the vast majority of the stadium
Mehmeti glanced a header wide from George Earthy's cross as the Robins chased a winner while Preston
slowing the game down and producing a result that ultimately worked for both teams

Bristol City head coach Liam Manning told BBC Radio Bristol: "I have no idea how I am feeling
"We made real hard work of it but I spoke to the lads beforehand and there's a lot made now about styles and philosophies
and we spoke about us to underpin everything with the culture we have got
"It says on the shirts 'always believe' and we have done that numerous times now
and you see it today - it's a fantastic group of lads
I couldn't be more proud of them and what they've done
"There's no expectation or pressure on us so we have got to go and be brave and enjoy it
You see today the lads give everything for the shirt."
Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire: "Really pleased with the performance
Bristol City have had two shots on target and scored two goals
"We controlled the game without the ball and Emil [Riis] and Milli [Osmajic] were always a threat
"I was really proud of the performance
just really disappointed with the goals [conceded]
They were the only two blips on a top away performance
"It was a productive day for our strikers but that was because how hard they worked without the ball."

A draw at home to Preston, who averted relegation on the final day, would be sufficient providing Blackburn came up short. Liam Manning, his assistant Chris Hogg and a throng of players huddled around Harry Cornick, the striker not in the squad, whose phone carried updates from Bramall Lane, where a Blackburn goal would have changed everything.

A red and white haze courtesy of flares and smoke bombs billowed into the sky
The pitch emptied before Bristol City’s players were re-introduced to the field as playoff semi-finalists
Arguably the moment of the day came more than 45 minutes after full-time
the core supporters in a throbbing corner of the South Stand
who invited the pair to celebrate together and truly kickstart the party with a series of fist pumps
“I had to force him to do it … he said about doing it during the week and then he bottled it a little, so I had to give him a nudge,” said Manning, who suffered personal tragedy with the loss of his baby son Theo last October
“It’s been a tough year for me so it was a special moment to be able to do that with my family at the end

A win would have rendered results elsewhere redundant but Preston stunned the home side by surging into a two-goal lead
the outcome trumped the result but the Bristol City captain Jason Knight’s strike
a minute after Ross McCrorie had made it 2-1
Knight ripped a right-foot rocket against the crossbar as the hosts pushed for an equaliser

“I’m looking forward to a beer right now.”
Until McCrorie pulled a goal back in the 69th minute
everything had been going pear-shaped for the hosts
Preston had just doubled their advantage through Milutin Osmajic and so all eyes were on the scores involving Millwall and Blackburn
who richly deserved the players’ player and the player of the season prizes

Bristol City fans celebrate after their draw with Preston(Image: Photo by Dan Mullan/Getty Images)Bristol City secured their spot in the Championship play-off places for the first time since the 2007/2008 season as they came from two down to draw 2-2 with Preston North End at Ashton Gate
The Robins went behind after 28 minutes when Preston striker Emil Riis headed Robbie Brady’s corner past City goalkeeper Max O’Leary
Having come into the day in fifth position
the Robins held their play-off destiny in their hands
but after Milutin Osmajic converted a one-on-one situation against O’Leary
they were handed a lifeline when Sheffield United equalised against Blackburn Rovers and Burnley took the lead at home to Millwall
they were inside the play-offs on goal difference and from there the Reds started to gain momentum
It wasn’t long before City clawed a goal back as Ross McCrorie popped up at the back post to head home after 69 minutes before he secured his brace five minutes later to level proceedings
Manning’s Reds then managed to navigate a nervy last quarter of an hour
to see out a 2-2 draw to remarkably secure sixth place and set up a two-legged play-off clash with Sheffield United
With both clubs having something to play for at opposing ends of the table
with neither team looking to play the ball forward
The first big chance fell the Robins’ way when Nahki Wells sent a shot bouncing wide of David Cornell in the visitors’ goal after nine minutes
City would go on to enjoy a spell of possession over the course of the next quarter of an hour but they were unable to break through North End’s low block
The only chance of that period fell Yu Hirakawa’s way after Joe Williams won a free-kick from a yellow card challenge by Ryan Ledson 35 yards out
The Robins were spraying passes around the Lilywhites’ box
but they couldn't break through until Hirakawa’s attempt

Preston took the lead a matter of moments after they caught Rob Dickie in possession on the halfway line
North End were suddenly presented with a two-on-two situation
which ended with Max O’Leary tipping Kaine Kesler-Hayden’s attempt behind
But the visitors would soon get their goal
with Emil Riis heading past the City keeper from the resulting corner
when Scott Twine unleashed a right-footed shot from outside of the box
his effort looped just over the bar and while it made the goalkeeper work
Brady then had the chance to add his second goal contribution of the game five minutes later when he was beaming down on O’Leary from a wide position but the Irish international curled his attempt just wide of the far post to send the the Robins into the break behind
The visitors started the better of the two teams after the interval and nearly doubled their lead just a minute after the restart when Osmajic beat Dickie to an up-field ball
The forward sprinted towards O’Leary and fired a shot at the Irish international which he tipped behind for a corner
Liam Manning and Bristol City have finished sixth in the Championship(Image: EFL)Osmajic then got a second chance to double the Lilywhites’ lead on the hour mark when he pounced on a forward ball which caught out his marker
slotting the ball through the City keeper’s legs and into the back of the net
With results elsewhere not going their way
the Robins didn’t give up and piled players forward in search of a goal back
Just when all hope was starting to look lost
goals elsewhere meant that the Robins were sitting in the top six on goal difference with 25 minutes to go
McCrorie has had a habit of popping up for goals exactly when City needed them
he found himself alone on the far side of the penalty area
As substitute George Earthy sent Wells to the byline to put in a cross
McCrorie made a run towards the back post and bounced a downward header into the back of the net

Just 90 seconds after they reduced the deficit, Jason Knight had the chance to bring City level, firing a powerful strike from 25 yards out that clattered the bar. Luckily, the Robins wouldn’t have long to wait for an equaliser as five minutes after his first, McCrorie was spotted making a darting run into the box by Knight. The wing-back received the ball in just enough time to place it past Cornell and send the Reds level.
Manning’s side managed to traverse their way through the tense final 15 minutes and the six that were added on, with the game finishing two goals apiece.
Their play-off place wasn’t confirmed on the final whistle, however, as the final few of the eight additional minutes at Bramall Lane still had to be played.
All of the Reds’ players and staff huddled around and watched the closing stages of the game in Yorkshire on a device before a roar ripped around Ashton Gate on the final whistle. Thousands of City fans then flooded onto the pitch to celebrate their best finish in 17 years.

Liam Manning and Bristol City have finished sixth in the Championship(Image: EFL)Liam Manning admits he is "so proud" of his "special" group of Bristol City players after the Robins secured their spot in the Championship play-offs with a draw against Preston North End on Saturday lunchtime
A brace from Ross McCrorie ensured the Reds came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Paul Heckingbottom's side at Ashton Gate
While the point lifted the mood around BS3
it didn't have a major impact on the league table with City ultimately finishing two points clear of seventh-placed Blackburn Rovers
Emil Riis handed the away side the lead after 28 minutes when he headed home from a Robbie Brady corner and that advantage was doubled on the hour mark when Milutin Osmajic calmly slotted under Max O'Leary
Just as it looked as though the Robins would fall at the final hurdle
McCrorie scored his fourth and fifth of the season within the space of five minutes to bring a sense of hope to South Bristol
Although City's spot in the play-offs was all-but secured come the full-time whistle, the Reds had to wait on the Ashton Gate pitch for Blackburn's draw at Sheffield United to be confirmed before the celebrations could truly begin
While it was a moment Manning and his players will never forget
he was still feeling the effects well after the full-time whistle
"It was a special afternoon," explained the City boss
"We've just said to the lads in there
that football is all about memories and that at the end there was a very special memory for everybody involved
"It was an exhausting afternoon but you can't replicate that high," he continued
"It's such a difficult thing to do and I'm just proud of the lads
"It is the biggest game of some of the lads' careers today
they won't have played in such a pressurised game
we spoke to them before the game around there's so much now around philosophies and identities of dominating the ball and doing this and doing that
about our identity and why we're so strong is our attitude
it's the behaviours that are so strong for me in our identity and that's what got it over the line today
"The lads are human, the lads are desperate to do well and they feel it," Manning said. "Like I said, when you look at the week we've had, to experience what we did on Monday and have a real test of what the level looks like, to then come here and know the pressure's on and it's in our hands, the lads have over and over again shown how much they want it, in terms of their actions.
"I'm so proud of them, I'm delighted for them because they're a special group."

James Graham was furious at Jacob Preston’s ban for a crusher tackle on Titans Captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui during Magic Round
“I nearly swore on air when I was calling this game.” said Graham on Triple M’s NRL Daily
“The fact that it was a penalty and the fact that he was sin binned I think it’s absolutely farcical!”

Kiraz Hat-trick Headlines Bulldogs' Magic Round Win
Canterbury are set to lose Jacob Preston for at least three weeks as Melbourne forwards Trent Loiero and Stefano Utoikamanu breathe a sigh of relief after the NRL charge sheet came out
Star second-rower Preston will cop three weeks on the sidelines with an early guilty plea for a grade-two crusher tackle on Gold Coast captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui late in the Bulldogs' 38-18 win at Magic Round
The Canberra Raiders are pleased to announce the signing of Jordyn Preston for the 2025 NRLW season
Preston made her NRLW debut for the St George-Illawarra Dragons in 2024
playing two games after being called into the Dragons squad late due to injuries
She was also named the Illawarra Steelers Player of the Year in 2024 and was part of the Steelers’ Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership-winning team last year
Preston’s signing completes the Raiders Top 24 squad for 2025
with the 22-year-old taking the final place in the squad after Claudia Finau was ruled out for the season following an ACL injury
Raiders NRLW coach Darrin Borthwick is excited to have Preston join the squad for the 2025 NRLW season
“Obviously we lost Claudia Finau with an injury earlier on in the junior representative season and I went to work looking for someone who offered similar attributes to what Claudia was going to add to our team,” Borthwick said
“I was watching a lot of the Steelers in their performances last year and them winning the Harvey Norman NSW Women’s Premiership and a few of their players stood out and Jordyn was one of them
Part of her story is that she started on the wing
is now playing back row and I’m quite comfortable she could move in the middle and do a good job
She’s a terrific person as well and someone who I think will fit into what we are building here
I think that level of maturity will be good for our squad
She’ll complement us footy-wise but she’ll also do a really good job with how we carry ourselves as a team as far as attitude and all those things that we look for
I think she’s not only got a lot to add on the field
she’s someone that I feel will offer us quite a bit off the field as well.”
Preston is excited to make the move to Canberra in the coming weeks before pre-season kicks off in early May
I can’t wait to get down there and just get into training,” Preston said
I’ve always been at Steelers so I’ve never been at a different club
I’m excited to learn things from a different perspective.”

NRL Match Highlights: Bulldogs vs Rabbitohs - Round 7, 2025
Jacob Preston is sitting in Sydney's notorious traffic, inching towards his destination as his mind starts to wander.
It's 2021 and the young forward steadily rising through the Bulldogs junior pathways is working as a delivery driver, crisscrossing his way through the Northern Beaches delivering parcels. But his mind is elsewhere.
As he sits in traffic, Preston is dreaming about the future. He's dreaming about running out for the Bulldogs in front of packed stadiums.
This dream has rapidly become a reality, the forward developing into a household name and preparing to play in front of more than 60,000 passionate fans in Canterbury's annual Good Friday clash with the Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium.
But just four years ago, Preston was working as a delivery driver and studying a Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UNSW as he took the early steps towards achieving his rugby league dreams.
"I was playing Jersey Flegg in 2021 and 2022, going to university while also delivering parcels full time," Preston told NRL.com.
"It was good but I just wanted to be playing NRL. I look back on the time with great memories, I met a lot of good people and got to work as a subcontractor under my dad and loved that.
"I [started my degree] in 2021, it's been a bit of a slow grind. I did the first year full-time, then once I started full-time footy, I've just been part-time and slowly chipping away."
Preston's form this year has been crucial to the Bulldogs' undefeated start to the season, the 23-year-old stepping up in Viliame Kikau's absence.
Typically a right-edge forward, Preston has spent time on both sides of the field while his fellow back rower was unavailable due to a knee injury.
Kikau is expected to return to the field on Friday afternoon, along with five-eighth Matt Burton, who was also sidelined with an MCL strain.
No matter what side of field he's playing on, Preston hasn't skipped a beat and has emerged as a Sate of Origin bolter in recent weeks.
The forward faces stiff competition for a place in the NSW team, with incumbents Angus Crichton and Liam Martin and in-form Raiders star Hudson Young also in the mix.
Preston's teammates are confident he can deliver on the big stage and Friday's clash in front of a record-breaking crowd is a chance to send a message to Blues coach Laurie Daley.
"He's an incredible young player and an incredible young man," Kurt Mann told NRL.com. "He's a very good kid who's got a big future ahead of him.
"I can definitely see him in an Origin jersey, he's a good kid with a big career ahead of him."
Preston may have made it in the NRL, but he hasn't stopped thinking about the future. He continues to study part-time and was recently awarded a prestigious UNSW Vice-Chancellor's Blues Awards for his dedication to sport and education.
Further studies are on the cards down the track, with his undergraduate degree opening up a variety of career paths.
Preston is excited for what the future holds, but for now, he's focused on extending the Bulldogs unbeaten start to the season on Friday afternoon.
"There's a few different [post-university] options," Preston said. "I could further my studies with a masters in law or I could go into police law enforcement in forensics so we'll see what happens but hopefully it's a long time off yet."

Paul Heckingbottom joined Preston in August
Manager Paul Heckingbottom will not be on the touchline for Preston North End's decisive final Championship game of the season away to Bristol City
Heckingbottom has been handed a two-match touchline ban, a £6,000 fine and a warning about his future conduct following his behaviour during his side's loss at Hull City on Easter Monday
The former Sheffield United boss admitted to acting in an improper manner and using abusive language towards a match official in the 55th minute and after the match
The incident concerned the awarding of the first of two penalties for Hull in a match which Preston lost after leading 1-0
Going into the game at Bristol City on Saturday, North End are 20th in the Championship
but just one point above the relegation zone
The Lancashire club have lost their last four games and could go down if they lose at Ashton Gate and Hull and Luton Town avoid defeat against Portsmouth and West Brom respectively
