Fire authorities have identified asbestos at the site of a massive factory fire that threatened to spread to other buildings before it was contained hours later in Sydney's south-west
A terrifying fire has ripped through a furniture factory in south-west Sydney
with more than 100 firefighters working through the night to contain the blaze
Emergency services race to Revesby after reports of a building fire on Mileprra Road just after 11am on Wednesday
Crews established a containment line over fears the blaze was threatening to ignite nearby warehouses
A grass fire also broke out at the rear of the factory which was quickly extinguished
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry was on site at Revesby
telling the media it took more than 100 firefighters and 25 fire trucks to contain the factory blaze
Supt Dewberry said several ladder platforms were deployed to contain the fire from the air
It took four hours to bring it under control
Fire and Rescue identified the roof of the building to be asbestos fibro
Firefighters are dousing the debris with water
meaning any asbestos fibres that are "loose or may come loose" is being suppressed
They will later work with the Environmental Protection Authority
local council and insurance company to work out a recovery and asbestos management plan
“As this building will be demolished
it will need to be recovered as the debris is removed,” Supt Dewberry said
“We are working with agencies to ensure this asbestos exposure… is contained in line with guidelines provided with safety experts.”
There was significant damage inside the premises
Milperra Road was closed for a good portion during the containment of the blaze
with just one city-bound lane remaining closed as of Thursday morning
Firefighters will most likely be on the scene for most of Thursday as they continue to put water on hotspots amid the asbestos concerns

Her husband - who is understood to have been behind the wheel - was arrested and taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing
Footage showed the distraught man holding his hands to his head as he sat on a nearby wall
A woman was seen comforting him while wiping tears away from her eyes
Two other women and a man also provided their support to the man
He was later escorted by officers into the back of a police car that was waiting outside the house

but community volunteer Leonie McLachlan says there is a better way
The 67-year-old former childcare operator runs the Revesby hub of local food co-op Box Divvy
The fast-growing co-op aims to provide shoppers with groceries that are fresh and locally sourced
It offers savings of up to 30 per cent compared to supermarket prices
grassroots co-ops are a better alternative to the monopolies that control the supply of goods in modern society
"I just think there's got to be a better way to keep it local and to keep it real," she said
"It's a way of staying connected and knowing that we're all eating well."
Box Divvy was formed in collaboration with the Western Sydney Diabetes Alliance to combat the growing prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes in the area
The co-op currently boasts 270 networks across NSW and the ACT and also helps battling farmers
who receive 60 cents of every dollar spent - twice as much as they earn from major retailers
Leonie first joined Box Divvy as a customer about five years ago to supplement the produce she grown in her own backyard
When the previous manager of the Revesby Hub moved away a little less than two years ago
she was happy to step in and fill the breach
the hub has gone from strength to strength - membership has increased from 30 households to 53
Having the face-to-face [interactions] with people gives me the opportunity..
you need a chat' or 'you're in a hurry' or 'what's your family up to?'
Orders for the hub open on a Saturday and are completed on a Tuesday evening
They are then sent to the farmers who pack the produce and send it to a warehouse
where volunteers pack them into into boxes for collection
The hub's collection centre at Revesby Uniting Church has become a community gathering spot where people meet for a chat
and to provide support to others in tough times
Leonie can also connect members to nearby support services
"It's an accidental counseling service many
"Having the face-to-face [interactions] with people gives me the opportunity..
you need a chat' or 'you're in a hurry' or 'what's your family up to?'
we've made a lot of friends and the people in the community have made a lot of friends."
The Revesby Hub puts together kindness boxes for those in need and purchases goods through Box Divvy which are sent to a local women's refuge
It also launched its own life skills program - inspired by James
a young autistic man who volunteers at the hub
Members can also order meat through the service
which is packed into cooler bags and delivered directly to homes
Leonie encouraged others to investigate whether hubs were available in their local communities
they may even want to consider starting one themselves
"There is definitely a need in the area for more hubs
and a great way to connect with your community."

Six men and one woman have been charged over a clandestine drug lab found in Sydney's southwest after a man on the building's roof allegedly tried to set it on fire with officers inside
Seven people have been charged following the discovery of a clandestine drug lab in Sydney's southwest that allegedly produced $50 million worth of meth
The New South Wales Raptor Squad found the inactive lab at an industrial complex in Revesby in March
following an investigation into organised drug supply in the city
A search led officers to find and seize 12 kilograms of methylamphetamine and precursors with a street value estimated to be worth more than $6 million in street value
Specialist police from the Drug and Firearm Squad
along with the assistance of NSW Fire and Rescue
were brought in to dismantle the lab for forensic testing
officers spotted a man allegedly attempting to light the roof of the lab on fire while police were still inside
The man fled the scene and the flames were quickly extinguished
police arrested six men and a woman following the execution of search warrants across multiple southwestern suburbs on Tuesday
Some of the alleged items found during the search include $1.8 million of illicit cigarettes
Five men - aged 28 to 40 - were all hit with charges relating to manufacturing a drug in a large commercial quantity and contributing to criminal activity
All were refused bail and appeared in court on Tuesday
A Croydon Park man and woman were charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime
and recklessly handling tobacco to evade taxes
They were granted conditional bail to appear in court on September 24
police said they will allege in court the lab produced hundreds of kilos of meth
with an estimated street value of more than $50 million
Commander of the Raptor Squad Detective Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis said the city had become safer after the dismantling of the drug lab
“These drugs are incredibly dangerous and by targeting the alleged sources we have potentially saved thousands of lives
has also fuelled organised crime across this state
who have been profiting from putting these dangerous substances into our communities
know it is a matter of time before we come for you.”

An enormous fire has engulfed a car wrecking yard located close to a busy airport in Sydney's south-west
which has been categorised as an 8th alarm emergency
on Fitzpatrick St in Revesby is sending large plumes of black smoke into the sky
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) first received reports of the fire at 2.10pm on Tuesday afternoon
There are more than 20 fire crews on the scene
including three multiple specialist Aerial Pumpers with 24metre ladders
but paramedics were on scene at about 2.30pm
'That looks bad, I hope everybody got out,' a witness can be heard saying in a video obtained by 7News.
'All that water he just put on there doesn't look like it did anything.'
Firefighters said from the scene their challenge was 'not only knocking the fire down but stopping the spread'.
'Fires at wrecking yards can burn extremely hot and fast,' FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
'The extreme heat and potential to spread rapidly can make these types of fires difficult to contain.
'Our firefighters are working to tackle the fire and ensure that all people are accounted for.'
The fire location is very close to Bankstown Airport and planes are still flying past.
The airport caters for charter and private business flights, freight, aeromedical services, aircraft maintenance businesses, emergency services and flying schools.
The NSW Police said Fitzpatrick St and Milperra Road are closed due to the fire.
People in the area are urged to stay indoors and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Interstate buyers looking to upsize into their dream luxury mansion have travelled to a newly listed property in Sydney’s south west that is tipped to break a record
Initially designed and constructed by a builder for his family in December 2020
the five bedroom property in Revesby has been listed with a guide of $2.95m
The current record for the highest residential sale in the suburb was set by 47 Weston St
Buyers from Melbourne travelled interstate to see the 10-car garage
Luxury car owners from Melbourne flew to inspect 56 Centaur St on its opening weekend
and were drawn to the 10-vehicle basement car park
The Revesby property has been listed with a $2.95m guide
LJ Hooker agent Abir Eddine said the builder’s family had outgrown the two-storey home and was looking to construct a larger property elsewhere in Sydney
“In addition to the car lovers from Melbourne
we’ve had upsizing families from the Central Coast and surrounding suburbs of Padstow and Hurstville come to inspect the property
“It’s a luxury quality build that is priced at $2.95m due to its location and views from the balcony over the nearby Virginius Reserve
“We’ve been slowly picking up market interest over the past few months with recent sales of $1.46m and $1.265m for duplexes in the suburb
attracting buyers that aren’t finding available stock in Padstow.”
The property includes an indoor cinema room
concrete slab home include an indoor cinema
a heated swimming pool with a barbecue terrace
The property is powered via solar panels and includes a 3000 litre underground rainwater tank
Solar panels on the roof of the property keep it heated
Ms Eddine said the concrete roof and remote fireplace also made the property unique
“We think $2.95m is a good price for a recently built luxury corner home, perhaps better than the $2.9m property we sold at 36 Villiers Rd in Padstow Heights last year.”

Two women are dead following an assassination in a Sydney suburban street which throws the “rule book” of organised criminal violence “out the window”
NSW Police Homicide Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said the attack on two women who were going out with a group of friends at Panania in Sydney’s south-west on Saturday night was “appalling”

[It is] unprecedented and we are determined to get answers for the family,” he said
“It bears the marks of an organised murder
The women were in the back seat of a silver four-wheel drive in Hendy Avenue
The driver sped around the corner to escape the attack and pulled over in Weston Street
were found inside the four-wheel drive with gunshot wounds
Two others in the vehicle – a 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl – were unhurt
Doherty said they were shaken by the incident and were assisting police with their inquiries
The women were treated by ambulance officers but Fadlallah died at the scene
The younger woman was taken in a critical condition to Liverpool Hospital
Doherty said the incident was a targeted shooting of Fadlallah who had “past relationships with other known identities”
Nine News reported Fadlallah was the former girlfriend of Sydney crime figure Helal Safi
standover man and Kings Cross bouncer who died in January last year
“There used to be an unwritten rule in the criminal element that you don’t touch family and women
I think that rule of engagement and rule book has been thrown out the window,” Doherty said
I think this demonstrated how low they’ve got to this point where any person that may be associated with someone they want to target
That is an unwritten rule and it has never been broken

Several crime scenes have been established
which will be examined by specialist forensic police
Police also located three burnt-out cars in the surrounding suburbs of Moorebank
Revesby and Yagoona and are investigating whether they are linked to the incident
Asked about the number of shooters in the attack
and whether the three burnt cars in the suburbs surrounding the shooting were stolen
police said investigations were continuing

The 39-year-old was remembered in a tribute from her workplace on Sunday.“We are shattered
may your memory be eternal GOD bless your soul
About 8.40pm Prayoon Kradphej was watching television in his home on Hendy Avenue across the street from the shooting
When the bullets were fired on the quiet street
boom’ and all the dogs started barking,” he said
Twenty minutes later there were “police everywhere”
the silver four-wheel drive sped around the corner onto Weston Street and drove about 800 metres up the road
called the police when she heard a man and a “hysterical” woman emerge from the car
“They were walking around and the two injured people were in the back,” she said
“He was trying to get her back into the car and she was visibly distraught and hysterical
I thought it was maybe domestic violence so I called the police just in case.”
Two other cars pulled up after the four-wheel drive but drove away when police arrived
Two women shot in Sydney’s west were treated by paramadics on Revesby resident Peter Aitkin’s driveway.Credit: Dean Sewell
Revesby resident Peter Aitkin said the three cars came down Weston Street “really fast” and pulled up outside his home
A group of men and women emerged from the cars and there were raised voices
Soon three ambulances arrived and paramedics started performing CPR on the two women on Aitkin’s driveway
“For the next hour and half or so all we saw were these terrific cops and ambulance guys working so hard to revive them,” Aitkin said
Aitkin took a sweet pea flower from his garden and asked a policeman to place it on her body
Forensics were on the scene from midnight and police closed part of Hendy Avenue on Sunday for continued forensic investigation
Strike Force Laurantus has been established to investigate the shooting

The NSW Government has announced a $7 million upgrade to Revesby Police Station in Sydney’s south west
it’s a timely revamp for the station which will receive a new façade and further internal upgrades
It comes as part of the NSW Government’s $434 million investment to construct new
buildings and training facilities across the State
NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole said the revamp to Revesby Police Station is a result of feedback from local police and the community
“We have listened to those requests and delivered funding to provide a modern
state-of-the-art police station to meet the needs of South West Sydney now and into the future,” Mr Toole said
“The upgrades will allow the station to accommodate the growing number of officers in the Bankstown Police Area Command for years to come
I am committed to providing all of our 22,000 workforce with the very best resources and facilities to help them keep our community safe.”
Member for East Hills Wendy Lindsay said the upgrade to Revesby Police Station will be welcomed by the community
“I have been advocating for this upgrade since I was elected in 2019 and I am so pleased that the NSW Government is investing in our community,” Mrs Lindsay said
“Our police officers work hard every day to keep our community safe and I’m glad this upgrade will contribute to the station’s efficiency and security.”
South West Metropolitan Region Commander Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith said the purpose-driven upgrades would support the future needs of the policing resources for the area
“All of our local officers – whether they are general duties officers patrolling our streets
or specialist officers working behind the scenes to solve crimes – work hard to keep our families and communities safe
and it is vital we provide the state-of-the-art facilities they need to do these important jobs,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said
“The upgraded Revesby Police Station will provide a more welcoming and efficient space for the local community and our officers
and secure and safe facilities to accommodate vulnerable victims of crime.”
Planning for external works has begun and early work is expected to commence next year

Jason Saab will make his professional boxing debut at the Revesby Workers’ Club
Given the risk is high and the reward is minimal
there appears little upside in Manly allowing one of its star players to trade punches in the middle of pre-season
But for the man widely considered the fastest in rugby league
stepping into the ring against the unknown Kusitino Sireli on December 9 is about so much more than cash or cachet
I thought I was going to get a chicken parmie and a beer after,” Saab quipped
The poster for the boxing debut of Sea Eagles winger Jason Saab
Saab was originally scheduled to fight - potentially against former Dragons teammate Zac Lomax - on a card arranged by No Limit
the promoters overseeing the career of Tim Tszyu
When the timing didn’t allow that to occur
the 23-year-old didn’t hesitate at the chance of boxing in front of a much smaller audience
“Not being the most physical player I can be and should be sometimes
I just thought boxing [training] was aiding that a bit,” Saab said
I’m putting myself in a really uncomfortable position
testing my character to see what I’m really made of
I want to see how it transfers to my footy season when it comes to being physical and contact
who is also working with Sea Eagles teammates Josh Schuster and Josh Aloiai
has been honing Saab’s technique for the past two years
There’s a big difference between punching the pads and an opponent
but Manly coach Anthony Seibold didn’t hesitate in providing his blessing
“I showed ‘Seibs’ I was on a card at Revesby and it didn’t change his mind at all,” said Saab
who is part of a fight card that includes former Samoan centre Joey Leilua
Jason Saab is up for a new challenge.Credit: SMH
“He was very happy for me to do it because he can see the effect it’s going to have on me
Of course there are going to be risks involved
but Seibs could see there is more good to come out of it than not
that it will help our footy team if I’m more physical
Even just training and sparring has brought out so much in me
but just knowing I’ve been in those confrontations that you don’t get into every day as a normal person
The whole fight is a reward for the work I’ve put in during the training camp and the sparring.”
Saab’s decision to box is all the more remarkable given that he was bullied at school
Well before he had filled out and grew to a two-metre giant
the Westfield Sports High graduate struggled with confidence and self-esteem
he has no hesitation in taking on another physical challenge
so I don’t give myself much credit for the things I do,” he said
Jason Saab and fellow winger Josh Addo-Carr show their speed.Credit: SMH
“I guess sometimes when I look from the outside in
if I could go back to that kid in school who was scared to walk around the school
scared someone would say something to him or of getting picked on
I never thought I’d be doing the things I’m doing now
I realise I’m doing it to show kids what they can make of themselves
I don’t just owe it to the younger version of me
I owe it to kids going through that stuff now
“I’m just trying to be the best athlete and person I can
If that means taking opportunities to box and play rugby league and the like
Having already scored 51 tries in 69 games
Saab hopes his cross-code challenge will result in him putting together his best season to date
“I have really high expectations of myself this year,” he said
“I want to make the [State of] Origin squad
I want to achieve everything that’s possible.”

we’re in lockdown and it’s harder to talk to people about Jesus because we aren’t seeing them
Revesby has had two recent experiences of God’s word going out despite (or perhaps because of) lockdown
showing that while it might be hard to make new connections
and we can certainly build on those we already have
Revesby rector the Rev Andrew Lim says a senior member of his congregation – we’ll call her Joan – has been reading the Bible on her balcony in recent weeks
Her neighbour – we’ll call her Angela – came onto her own balcony
Angela expressed such interest that Joan suggested they read the Bible together
they’ve arranged to meet regularly on their neighbouring balconies with a cup of tea and Matthew’s gospel,” Mr Lim says
but they’re able to still share in the word
I need to hire a big-gun evangelistic speaker to do the job
but often it’s the person who quietly and faithfully perseveres in their life and mission
“God’s been preparing the way and putting the pieces in place..
[Angela’s] son has been praying for her for years without really seeing any interest
at this time when they’re two neighbours in lockdown
We’re praying that she will come into a living
personal relationship with Jesus as she gets to know him.”
the parish also had a group viewing of the Equip women’s conference
St Mark’s member Linda Parsons invited her sister-in-law Serena
who travelled to the event from her home on the outskirts of the CBD
Mr Lim’s wife Lucy struck up a conversation with her on the day and says that not only was Mrs Ung interested in finding out more about the things of faith
but she (Lucy) could tell the Spirit was already working in Serena’s heart.
and Lucy decided to begin their weekly Bible time together by going through Two Ways To Live
She explained each element as they went and
Says Mrs Lim: “She already had a desire to trust in Jesus and knew that there’s more to this world
so she had all the things there but just needed it tied together
[After doing Two Ways To Live] she could see that ‘Oh – he died for my sins’
“Some people feel like they need to know everything before making a decision and I have to say to them
‘You’ll never get to the point where you know everything!’ But others think
‘This is right’ and they’re happy to make that commitment earlier on and learn along the way
“We’re reading the gospel of Mark
Serena says that she doesn’t know Jesus that much
so we’re trying to get to know who he is – but she knew enough to make a decision.”
she already had it all before coming to faith
a nice home and a beautiful baby girl.
Yet she still felt unfulfilled and “didn’t know how to be contentedly happy”
For years she had been encouraged to consider God but hadn’t made the time or effort
I found some light in my life through God..
and for that my life is truly fulfilled” – adding
from Psalm 28: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts and I am helped; my heart exults
and with my song I give thanks to him”
“The Archbishop recently encouraged us all with these words: ‘Jesus is not locked down
And here we have two examples of that very truth
and it is my hope and prayer that in sharing these two stories of how God is working
they will also be of encouragement to others and increase people’s boldness to speak the gospel – even in lockdown!”

Singapore-based Roxy Pacific and Sydney-based developer Phillip George have acquired a 8,450 square metre Revesby warehouse site
The Bowermans Furniture site at 34-36 Mavis Street was bought from BN Revesby PT Pty Ltd for $9 million
Roxy Pacific and George plan to develop the site as a combination of light industrial warehouses and self-storage units
They will likely range in size from 25 square metres to 200 square metres
to accommodate a range of businesses under a strata scheme
"The Revesby site is well located within close proximity to the M5 and we will be developing the property in a bespoke way to accommodate a wide range of businesses with versatile and dynamic spaces," said George.
Having sold Mrs Crocket’s in 2004, George turned his attention to being a property owner and developer with a wide range of residential, industrial and commercial projects worth more than $750 million across Australia.

Two women are dead after a shooting in Sydney's southwest overnight.
Emergency services were called to a street in Revesby around 9pm.
Police believe the shooting was not domestic related.
A mother with links to organised crime has been shot dead in a ‘methodical, planned assassination’ as she got into a car in southwest Sydney.
Emergency services were called to Weston Street in Revesby about 8.50pm on Saturday night amid reports of a double shooting.
They found a 48-year-old woman with critical injuries. She could not be revived and died at the scene.
A younger woman, aged 39, was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition but also died from her injuries.
One of the women has been identified as mother Lameta Fadlallah.
There were two other occupants inside the car - a 16-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man. Neither were physically injured but were left 'incredibly shaken' from the attack.
All four are understood to be casual associates of one another.
NSW Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said the shooting was an outrage in a press conference on Sunday afternoon.
'This is an appalling attack on two women. They have lost their lives. It was a planned murder, an assassination really, and it's happened in a public street in Sydney,' he said.
'It's unacceptable by any standards. It's unprecedented really. And we are determined to get the answers for the family.'
Mr Doherty said the attackers had broken an ‘unwritten law’ amongst organised crime to ‘not touch women or family’.
‘There used to be an unwritten law that you don’t touch family and you don’t touch women. That’s been thrown out of the window, they don’t care anymore,’ he said.
‘They don’t discriminate if you’re male or female. Every rule book has been thrown out, and that is concerning.’
Mr Doherty said the 48-year-old victim was known to police but said 'it appears the 39-year-old woman sitting next to her is a completely innocent party in all of this'.
The 20-year-old driver of the car reportedly left the scene amid a hail of bullets, driving to nearby Weston St to escape the gunman.
Police said it was too soon to confirm whether this shooting is just the latest in an ongoing gangland war, despite having all the usual hallmarks.
Three burnt out cars were found in surrounding suburbs which are all now undergoing forensic examination.
‘This unprecedented, appalling attack needs to be assessed on its own merits,’ Mr Doherty said.
‘This is an organised, methodical, planned murder. That concerns us. We can’t get away from the fact that that’s unusual and unprecedented.’
Police are appealing to the public for help.
'We want to find those answers out as much as you do. It's important for us the timeline that occurred. All we can tell you is, it was an incredibly violent, horrendous crime where two women have been shot dead in a car,' Mr Doherty said.
'We should be all completely appalled that two women have lost their lives in an unprecedented attack. Whether it is organised crime links or not, that is part of the investigation were looking it.
'There's no suggestion of any links to the current conflict so we are treating this on its own merits and the motive is still unclear. We need that information.'
A car was found burnt out in the nearby suburb of Panania but police are still working to establish whether there is a link between the two incidents.
Revesby is in the heart of an ongoing gangland war in Sydney.
Multiple crime scenes have been established throughout the area with the Homicide Squad and local area command working together to investigate.
Any person with information, dashcam or CCTV is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
