Richmond have made one change to their side from Round 7
with Noah Balta back in the side due the game being played during the day

The win could've been closer to 100 points if the Hawks had kicked straighter
Veteran Jack Gunston continued his excellent season
kicking 4 goals to take his season tally to 17 to be seventh in the Coleman Medal
The Tigers put up another competitive performance in a 20 point defeat against Melbourne on Anzac Day eve
with a third quarter lapse the big difference in the game
Richmond conceded 6 goals to 1 in the third quarter after being down by just 4 points at half time
The Tigers did respond in the fourth quarter
Hawthorn have been an outstanding team going forward this season

The defensive side of the Hawks game doesn’t get enough praise
but it’s as good as any side in the competition
Hawthorn are ranked first for pressure acts
second in tackles and fifth for tackles inside 50
If the Hawks dominate stoppages in the manner they should
and are able to generate repeat inside 50’s through their pressure against an inexperienced Richmond side
The Tigers have been the worst team in the competition in taking the ball from defensive 50 to forward 50
and have turned the ball over consistently in their back half
Over their past six games Richmond have conceded 50
Hawthorn beat Richmond twice in 2024 by margins of 63 and 48 points
and this clash shapes up to be another big win
One of the best attacking teams in the competition going up against one of the worst attacking teams is only going to end one way
and that’s with a convincing win to the Hawks

Over the next few months, Tigers defender Noah Balta will miss all of Richmond’s night and interstate games due to his court-imposed curfew.
Richmond’s General Manager of Football Performance Tim Livingstone joined 3AW Football and detailed the club’s plan for Noah Balta when AFL games clash with his curfew.
“It’s his job to be playing footy, so if there’s an opportunity for him to play VFL, we will,” Livingstone on 3AW Football.

The VFL Tigers defeated Box Hill by 25-points on Saturday night in Frankston, staving off a late comeback.
Richmond responded perfectly to last week’s big loss against Casey, kicking six goals in the first quarter to establish a 19-point quarter-time lead. Young Tiger Jasper Alger kicked a goal in the first 30 seconds of the game, followed by Massimo Raso only minutes later. Ruckman Oliver Hayes-Brown also started well, kicking two first-quarter goals.
Richmond carried on the momentum in the second quarter, piling on a further five goals with Kaleb Smith and Kane McAuliffe starring. Second-gamer Sean Lai also kicked his first VFL goal with a brilliant running effort. Going into the main break, Richmond established a comfortable 39-point lead and looked to be running away with the game.
Catch all the highlights from the Tigers win over Box Hill.
However, the Hawks came out of half-time looking like a different side, running the gauntlet on offence and moving the ball quickly as they worked their way back into the contest. Goals to Max Ramsden and Ben Cavarra reduced the margin back to 24 points at three-quarter time as the Tigers could manage only a solitary point for the term.
In the last quarter the match really tightened up, with goals to Kye Declase and Sam Butler making things tense for Richmond.
The Tigers needed something special to gain back ascendancy, and it came in the form of McAuliffe, who won a free kick and booted a goal with a massive bomb from outside 50. Alger then kicked his third of the match to seal the game, as Richmond ran out 25-point winners and secured their first win since Round 3.
For Richmond, Smith continued his great form with a game-high 31 disposals and 10 marks, while McAuliffe (23 disposals and two goals) was also crucial. Small forwards Raso and Alger (three goals) were at their dangerous best and provided plenty of headaches for the Box Hill defence.
Richmond 6.2. 11.4. 11.5. 14.7. (91) Box Hill 3.1 5.1 7.5 9.12 (66)

Match: Hawthorn vs Richmond Date: Sunday
Sunday afternoon at the MCG sees old enemies Hawthorn and Richmond set to do battle in the Hawks' centenary match
in a symbolic clash as the Tigers were the Hawks first opponent backs in 1925
the Tigers proved too good for the Hawks in a 39-point result as Donald Don booted for for Richmond
did keep the Tigers goalless during the final term
There's been plenty of water pass under the bridge in the century since that clash
with the Hawks adding 13 premierships to their record – they didn't win their first 'til 1961 as well – while Richmond have won 11 of their 13 flags over the last 100 years
both these teams have been the powerhouse clubs of the last 15 years
winning three flags apiece but whether we'll see a classic in this one remains to be seen
have been better than many expected posting wins over Carlton and Gold Coast so far this season
The problem for the Tigers is consistency as even in their victories
they haven't produced four-quarter efforts
It's when Richmond drops the momentum that other teams have pounced hard and piled on goals and Hawthorn
The problem for Hawthorn is they haven't quite hit their straps either despite posting five wins so far this season
They bounced back from two losses to Port Adelaide (30 points) and Geelong (7 points) with a 50-point victory over winless West Coast last Sunday
but it still didn't feel like a statement performance
they will also be missing Jack Scrimshaw and Karl Amon – both with concussion – along with the suspended Connor Nash and will have to come up against a Richmond outfit that will be hard at it for long periods
especially with Noah Balta back in defence after missing last week with curfew
We still think Hawthorn will be too good here as they look to keep track with the top bracket of teams
but it may not be the walk in the park they would hope for
Hawthorn have won just three of their last 12 clashes with Richmond dating back to 2017
There was also one draw thrown in during 2021 in a Covid match at the MCG without a crowd

FOUR-TIME premiership coach Alastair Clarkson returned to the fold as Hawthorn celebrated its AFL/VFL centenary in style with a 65-point drubbing of Richmond
Clarkson was one of the dozens of club greats among the 62,321 spectators on hand to see fan favourite Jack Gunston kick his 500th career goal in the Hawks' 16.13 (109) to 6.8 (44) triumph at the MCG

Spice from Sicily heats up the brewA frustrating first quarter combined with a vocal crowd and some notoriously short fuses saw things ignite in the second term
Maurice Rioli tried a bit of fancy footwork but came up short when James Sicily tackled him and won the free kick
The Hawks skipper gave Rioli a little extra lip
eliciting a physical response from Tim Taranto who gave away a 50 metre penalty and sparked some fireworks
An extra celebration in the midst of Hawks' partyClub stalwart and fan favourite - although that includes most in brown and gold - Jack Gunston entered Sunday's clash on 498 career goals

If you want further proof of just how well Seth Campbell is going in his second season at senior level with Richmond
who won the Cosgrove-Jenkins award in 2024 as the Club’s best first year player
has become the youngest Tiger to score a dozen goals or more one-third of the way through a season since the great Dustin Martin in 2011
Campbell was 20 years and 126 days of age when he kicked his 12th goal of the 2025 season in the Round 8 clash with Hawthorn at the MCG
He is Richmond’s leading goalkicker to this point of the season with 12

Seth Campbell's impressive 2025 season rolls on
We extend our deepest respect to First Peoples and Traditional Owners of the land
as a staunch supporter of the Richmond Football Club
Whilst serving under five former Prime Ministers - Harold Holt
and Malcolm Fraser - he followed the fortunes of Tigerland from within the inner sanctum
always having the ear and respect of powerbrokers Graeme Richmond
Peter Nixon is the wisest man I know,” Wilson said in 2012
“Pete’s been a super bloke to this football club
He’s been a hell of a help and a great mentor to me when I was President.”
A search across the Richmond Archive shows his name popping up everywhere – in Annual Reports
and on the donors’ board showing significant financial contributors to the Jack Dyer Foundation
Peter Nixon as a special guest at the infamous 1987 AGM with Alan Bond as President
Nixon went to Wesley College where he played football on a Saturday morning before heading off to a League match
And one day Jack Dyer took the three of us
we were standing in the corner of the race
and he took us into the room and the three of us remained Richmond for the rest of our lives,” Nixon said
While the Member for Gippsland in the Federal Parliament for 21 years
Nixon held the portfolios of the Minister for the Interior
26 days after the Tigers' drought breaking Premiership in 1967
Nixon was asked during The House of Representatives sitting
is the Minister for the Interior aware that recently two honourable members have been attacked by marauding magpies in the vicinity of Parliament House
“as a supporter of the Richmond Football Club
which won this year's Melbourne premiership
I have frequently been attacked by a certain Magpie supporter who sits in a corner of this chamber”
but also the first time the phrase “Richmond Football Club” was entered into the esteemed Hansard transcripts for a question without notice
In 1981 he was appointed a Premier Patron of the Richmond Football Club
RFC Minute Book January 1979 - Nixon invited to speak at Premier Patrons dinner
At the end of 1984 he was selected as one of the four original VFL Commissioners on the League’s governing body
a special team photograph was taken with him at the Punt Road Ground
the same venue where around 80 years earlier
“If you want to know how famous he is...if you go east of Bairnsdale
the people up there aren’t quite sure if God’s God
AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon said Mr Nixon had lived an incredible life
serving the people of Victoria as a Federal member for the National Country Party and
serving as Chair of Southern Cross Broadcasting as well as working to assist the formation of the national competition
“Australian football has undergone enormous change across the last 40 years as the VFL competition grew into our national AFL competition,” Mr Dillon said
of which Peter Nixon was one of that group of four
began to implement the massive change that sees us with an incredibly even competition today where all teams can plan for success and with clubs based in every mainland state
and the leaders who have followed on from Peter and his colleagues
were steadfast in their determination to ensure our game had both a broad base at the community level and it was an exciting game at the elite level played by the best athletes in our country
it was always a pleasure to be able to spend time with Peter at our Grand Final Day function
and I know that he took great satisfaction from the recent premiership successes of Richmond
The Richmond Football Club sends its condolences to his family and friends
The Tigers defeated the Hawks in VFL action on Saturday night
Richmond coach Adem Yze says his side lacked polish in their Round 8 loss to Hawthorn
lamenting wasted chances in the forward half
Despite leading the inside 50 count 16-10 at quarter time
the Tigers scored just three behinds in the opening term
It was a trend that continued throughout the clash
with the half-time inside 50 count being 25 apiece
while the ball spent 51% of the game inside Richmond’s forward half
The Tigers unfortunately failed to turn strong field position into goals
with their six majors being their lowest return of the season
Yze provided his assessment of where things went wrong in the attacking half
we thought our system and our method was really strong in the first half
but we just couldn't finish our work,” Yze said
I can't fault their effort and their intent
“They (Hawthorn) are very good with the ball
They were tough in the contest at the start of the game
we denied them a lot of flow with their ball movement
“They've got their game at a level that we're aspiring to be and get ours too
“The scoreboard started to create a bit of anxiety and pressure on the players
I thought we then started taking some more risks to obviously arrest that and we probably gave up a couple extra scores that we shouldn't have
Yze added how the differential in scores off turnovers had a major impact on the result
“We created enough opportunities from turnover
They kicked 10.3 and we kicked 3.7,” Yze said
their spirit goes up because their execution is working
and ours isn’t and it can deflate a young group
and I felt like that did deflate us a little bit.”
Key defender Noah Balta limped off in the final minutes after appearing to roll his ankle
but Yze confirmed he suffered “a bit of a corky”
Tempers flared between both sides in the second quarter
when Tim Taranto shoved Hawks captain James Sicily
after he threw Maurice Rioli to the ground after a tackle
Taranto needs to lead by example for the young Tigers
"Sicily's a fiery character and he got into one of our younger players
so for our vice-captain to step in and fly the flag…there's obviously a method to it
when one of your players is going in to help one of your younger players and fly the flag and lead by example
but I'd rather him do that than not go in there at all."
Hawthorn was too good for Richmond in Round 8

Richmond failed to spoil the party of Hawthorn’s centenary game on Sunday afternoon
with the Hawks defeating the Tigers by 65-points
A slow start doomed Richmond as it never recovered after conceding the first five goals of the game
Two straight goals late in the second quarter from Seth Campbell and Jonty Faull gave the Tigers some hope
but the Hawks quickly responded before the main break to lead by 34-points at half-time
as he applied strong pressure with a chase-down tackle in the middle of the ground and then ran back into the forward 50 to finish the chain with a major

Tom Brown was a shining light for Richmond in the Round 5 loss to Fremantle.
Richmond’s forward line has impressed across the first seven rounds of the season, with many of the Club's youngsters showcasing how dangerous they are in front of goal.
The likes of Sam Lalor, Harry Armstrong, Jonty Faull, Seth Campbell, Rhyan Mansell, Steely Green, Jacob Bauer, Maurice Rioli, and Liam Fawcett have all booted goals and showed strong promise up forward across the first seven games of the season.
Former 268-game Tiger, now Assistant Coach/Forwards Coach Chris Newman, said he is happy with the “progress” the young forward line is continuing to show.
“There have been some positives to come out of our games so far,” Newman said.
“Some patches in the games that we have played, perhaps we have fallen out of the contest at times and have allowed too many scores.
“But there has also been some really good and pleasing passages of play where our younger guys have had some real impact in games.
“I think with the group that we have got right now, we are trying to get that balance in games and trying to be as consistent as possible.”
Assistant Coach Chris Newman speaks about his top moments from rounds 4 to 7 of the season.
Newman credited the success of the forwards to the experience of two-time premiership player Tom Lynch, whose leadership has helped fast-track his teammates' development.
“I’m happy with the progress that a lot of the forwards are making. We’ve got a relatively young group, apart from big Lynchy," Newman said.
“But he has been really good in some of his leadership that he has providing some of those younger guys.
“Particularly some of the keys that he is playing alongside, like Harry Armstrong, Liam Fawcett, Jonty Faull and those types of guys who have tried to absorb as much information as possible from him.”
Newman also previewed this Sunday’s clash against Hawthorn, who are sitting in fourth spot.
“They are obviously in some really good form and are playing some outstanding football,” Newman said.
“We know we will have our work cut out for us, but a lot of our guys now have had a really solid week on the track, and I feel like we are prepared as well as we possibly can be to put on a good show.”
Jacob Hopper will play his 150th AFL game this Sunday when Richmond faces Hawthorn.
There's a bit of added feeling in Sunday's clash between Richmond and Hawthorn

Hawthorn forward Nick Watson is likely to cop an AFL fine for an obscene finger gesture after footage emerged of him flipping the bird to Richmond supporters on Sunday
On a day the Hawks celebrated their VFL-AFL centenary
Watson was seen engaging with Tigers supporters in the goal square before giving the middle finger salute and then pointing toward the scoreboard
Watson was almost certainly was sparked into action by the spirited Tigers’ supporters
The flipping of the bird has become a slow-burn trend this season
West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid was sanctioned for his actions towards Brisbane fans at the Gabba
while Geelong recruit Bailey Smith has been fined twice
There was the double bird he gave Adelaide fans during Gather Round
while he as also sanctioned for taking aim at Hawthorn supporters when he left the field during the game at the MCG
Smith and Reid were handed a “please explain” by the AFL
Smith was sanctioned $1875 for his second offence
AFL footy boss Laura Kane told this masthead last week she did not believe the league had been prudish when fining Smith and Reid
It’s just not behaviour we want to see,” Kane said
Tigers coach Adem Yze backed Tim Taranto’s decision to “fly the flag” and concede a 50-metre penalty and goal on Sunday when he knocked over Hawthorn captain James Sicily in a fiery melee just before half-time that will cause about a dozen players to be fined
Yze said the vice captain might have overstepped the mark in giving away the penalty
but preferred he did that in sticking up for his younger teammate Maurice Rioli jnr
who Sicily roughed up after earning a free kick for tackling Rioli as the Tiger tried to evade him
“I’d rather him do that than not go in there at all,” Yze said of Taranto

The incident led to huge melee involving half a dozen players from each team
with Hawks veteran Jarman Impey appearing uncharacteristically riled when he took on Tigers youngster Jonty Faull after trying to drag Toby Nankervis off Nick Watson
but agreed he was more fired up than usual
that just happens organically when you are having a bit of a blue,” Impey said
He was adamant nothing untoward had happened to provoke him
I am the type of guy who likes to follow-up pretty quickly
so even out there I couldn’t really move on until I spoke to them,” Impey said
“It was nothing and we all sort of laughed about it
There was nothing too serious whatsoever.”
Richmond defender Noah Balta – in his first game back since being convicted for an assault outside the Mulwala Water Ski Club late last year – was booed every time he touched the ball
Hawks coach Sam Mitchell also dismissed the encounter
physical games” and he thought his players were good in that area as they defeated Richmond by 65 points
He said the sight of so many legends of the club at the ground to celebrate the Hawks’ 100-year anniversary (and 13 premierships) had made the build-up to the game different
and he was pleased his team – although scrappy in their execution at times – handled the occasion
understanding of the 100 years and the weight that carried and then to go and play 10 minutes later
I thought they did a great job,” Mitchell said
“I found it quite difficult on a personal level to get back to it.”
said spending time with people like Shane Crawford and David Parkin
who have been so instrumental in his career
and then hearing Robert DiPierdomenico before the game saying he wanted to run out on the ground all added to a different atmosphere
but the Hawks did the job with a commanding win
Mitchell praised Tom Barrass for his performance in the first quarter when the ball was living in Richmond’s front half and the Tigers were racking up forward-half turnovers
He also said he was not concerned about Sicily’s kicking struggles
with the brilliant defender not hitting targets by foot in his usual fashion
“Sic is a captain of the club and a fantastic player ..
his last couple of weeks he hasn’t been at his best
and he is working hard on his game,” Mitchell said
“The best of James Sicily is in front of him ..
the thing that makes him a great player is that he doesn’t shy away from it
He knows he has to keep going for those kicks
The Hawks just kept building their form as the game went on
moving the ball from the back end better in the second half
with Impey and Massimo D’Ambrosio instrumental in creating that run
building on the defensive foundation Barrass laid in the first half
such as when triple-premiership hero Jack Gunston kicked his 500th goal late in the third quarter to move to eighth on the Hawks’ list of leading goalkickers and 754 behind Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Jason Dunstall
Richmond kicked just six goals for the game
with their first coming minutes before half-time – allowing them to avoid being the first Tiger team to go goalless in the first half since round 18
as the Hawks again showed why they remain a force to be reckoned with in 2025
What can still be achieved remains to be seen

Richmond coach Adem Yze is looking forward to the Tigers redeeming themselves on Saturday night after a second half fadeout against Fremantle last weekend
across the third and fourth terms in a disappointing Gather Round defeat to the Dockers
Preparing for another challenge against the undefeated Gold Coast Suns at Marvel Stadium
Yze is anticipating his Tigers to bounce back on Saturday night
“We can't wait to get to Marvel and put on a really good show because last week we weren't happy,” Yze said
“Our second half wasn't to AFL standard and our players know that
We reviewed that and we get a chance to go and show that against a really quality AFL team
“We're coming up against a really strong top four team
all their KPIs are all top four and they're playing really good footy and for a reason
“It gives our younger boys another opportunity against a quality side.”
Adem Yze speaks to the media ahead of the Tigers Round 6 match against Gold Coast
Gold Coast possesses a strong Richmond flavour
with three-time premiership Tiger Daniel Rioli joining the Suns this past off-season
The 28-year-old has had a strong impact for Gold Coast
and Yze does expect “a bit of banter” between Rioli and his former teammates
but they do have one of ours and a premiership player and a great Richmond man in Daniel,” Yze said
“I know there will be a bit of banter out there
and we love everything he did for our footy club.”
The Suns are also led by triple premiership Richmond coach Damien Hardwick
with Yze always relishing the challenge of coaching against him
“People in the building that have worked with him know that he's a great coach and you can't win three premierships and not be a good coach,” Yze said
The Tigers host the Suns at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night at 7:35pm AEST. Fans can click here to buy tickets.

Three Tigers have been named to make their debuts in Beaconsfield, Massimo Raso, Jhett Haeata and Sam Toner.
Raso joined Richmond VFL after a couple of strong seasons with the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League.
The 18-year-old is a crafty half forward, and is very clean at ground level with great speed and agility.
Haeata, also 18, is a dynamic utility with elite speed and agility.
Throughout his time playing midfield, wing, and half-back with the Sandringham Dragons in the Coates Talent League, Haeata showcased his ability to burst forward and create scoring opportunities.
Hailing from Narre Warren, 19-year-old Toner is a natural goal kicker who burst onto the scene after dominating local footy.
The forward made an immediate impact in the Coates Talent League with his speed, energy, and vertical leap.

Richmond and Collingwood have now delivered over 206,000 meals to Foodbank Victoria after competing for the Charity Shield across the past two years
a towering figure in Australian public life and a lifelong supporter of the Richmond Football Club
Known for his dual legacy in national politics and Australian football
Nixon leaves behind a remarkable record of service
A former Cabinet Minister and one of the original architects behind the transformation of the Victorian Football League (VFL) into the national AFL competition
marking the end of a life dedicated to both public service and the sport he loved
Peter Nixon served as the Federal Member for Gippsland for 21 years
Nixon held senior portfolios including Minister for the Interior
and Minister for Primary Industry under five Australian Prime Ministers—Holt
Nixon famously referenced the Richmond Football Club during a 1967 House of Representatives sitting
playfully responding to a question about swooping magpies:
“As a supporter of the Richmond Football Club
which won this year’s Melbourne premiership
I have frequently been attacked by a certain Magpie supporter who sits in a corner of this chamber.”
That quote was not only clever—it marked the first time “Richmond Football Club” appeared in Hansard without being tied to a formal debate
Peter Nixon’s influence extended beyond Canberra
he served as one of the four original VFL Commissioners
helping to steer the league’s transition into the AFL
now a national competition with clubs in every mainland state and soon
Nixon was appointed Premier Patron of the club in 1981
He was deeply embedded in club life—mentioned in minute books
and seen at key events such as Tommy Hafey Club functions and the historic 1987 AGM
A photograph taken in 2024 at Punt Road Oval
where Nixon’s love for Richmond first ignited as a young student
captured his connection to the Tigers—nearly 80 years after his earliest visits to the club as a boy
“If you want to know how famous he is… if you go east of Bairnsdale
or Peter Nixon is God,” said former Richmond President Ian Wilson
“Peter Nixon was instrumental in shaping the modern AFL
and integrity to the game during a transformative time
His contribution was vital to the competition we enjoy today.”
Dillon also recalled Nixon’s loyal presence at AFL Grand Finals and his unwavering support for Richmond’s premiership wins:
“He took great satisfaction in Richmond’s recent successes and remained a Tigers man to the core.”
Peter Nixon is remembered not only for his political wisdom but for his mentorship and dedication behind the scenes at Richmond Football Club
As a consultant to the club’s board from 1995–2004 and a significant contributor to the Jack Dyer Foundation
his fingerprints are all over the club’s modern history
he recalled how Jack Dyer himself welcomed him and his friends into the Richmond change rooms—a moment that would shape a lifetime of allegiance
The AFL and the Richmond Football Club have both extended their deepest sympathies to Nixon’s family
Peter Nixon AO’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Australia’s story—a man who gave his life to the service of his country and the game he loved
