2025 is set to be a big one for the Redbacks with its women’s side getting a fresh start and its men’s team looking to build on a promising season Ringwood’s Senior Men's side fell just short of a return to finals in Division 2 with percentage the only difference between them and fifth placed finishers Brett Rowe is set to return for his eighth year as Redbacks coach saying that despite falling short of finals he was proud of what the group achieved last year with all the injuries they had “We were able to still be really competitive and push to a point where we were almost playing finals,” Rowe said “That’s driving the group going into this season knowing that we’re very close and if we can stay healthy like most teams we want to give ourselves every opportunity.” Retention has been strong from the Redbacks with Jett Latchford the only major departure to South Croydon and Mitch Brereton hanging up the boots but it gives someone the opportunity to step up and try and make the position theirs.” with swingman Riley Hillman and midfielder Cade Bell joining from Berwick Springs and East Ringwood respectively “(Hillman) will predominantly play down back but has the ability to go forward…if we can keep (our defence) strong it gives us a bit more flexibility with moving guys up forward.” Daniel Collier and Ryan Warren have also returned to Jubilee Park with Collier coming off a strong few years with East Ringwood and Warren joining from Edithvale-Aspendale “I think those couple of years (for Collier) at East Ringwood has done him wonders he’s come back a lot different in regards to his leadership “(Warren) was a solid player for us and we hope that’s what he brings to the table.” the majority of the playing group look set to improve once again particularly winger Mitchell Heckley and defender Noah Adkins but he’s come back as fit as I’ve ever seen He started to show some form on a wing last year has come back strong and fitter…he’s really impressed me over the preseason in regards to the work that he’s done.” as well as finishing just outside of a finals spot Rowe says the side’s objective is to return and win a final this coming season “We’re just looking to continue to keep growing as a group and hopefully be there at the very end of the year when it counts.” Ringwood kicks off its season at Jubilee Park when they host one of last year’s preliminary finalists in Mulgrave Meanwhile it’s Senior Women’s side will enter into this season with a fresh start after making a return to the winners list last year in Division Two Jaiden Vann has signed on as the Redbacks new Senior Women’s coach bringing experience from Northern FNL clubs Hurstbridge and Watsonia Vann says that Ringwood has been very welcoming since he became head coach of the club’s senior women’s program they include the women in everything that they do I’ve had a few chats with Brett Rowe as well in regards to things he’s been really good at and he wants the women involved,” Vain says “Basically everyone who’s been involved with the women’s program they’ve been excellent so far.” last year’s senior women’s coach for Ringwood have been particularly helpful for Vann in his time so far “Without his daughter (Zoe) heavily involved he’s still trying to have a big say in what we do and I really appreciate what he’s done “I’ve had a couple of chats with Zoe just to get an idea of what the girls are like and some of the stuff they did last year.” Ringwood’s core group of players have re-signed heading into this season saying that the training and the feedback he’s received from the group has been positive “I’ve had a lot of feedback from the girls such as ‘we haven’t done this before and it’s really good’ because I’m trying to build on skill development… “We’ve had a really big focus on skill development and try to incorporate running into the drills that we do.” Among the core group that’s impressed at training includes Team of the Year member Grace Ward Shalisa Zattin and AFL Victoria Young Leader of the Year Olivia Ashcroft “(Shalisa Zattin) as well is a great voice Olivia Ashcroft as well comes to every session after her junior training she’s always great with the positive talk.” There’s been many positives so far for Vann about Ringwood who wants the players to enjoy their experience on the field as well as enjoy their footy I was a big fan of their pride cup that they had last year and we’re hoping to do the same this year… you’re here because you enjoy playing footy with your friends I really want it to be an enjoyable experience.” One of the leading benchmark clubs across both senior competitions and the Netball A phenomenal year saw East Ringwood finish just one kick short of a premiership on Grand Final Day Although it was Balwyn who had the red-hot start to the year the Roos quickly cemented themselves as one of the premiership favourites when they knocked off the Tigers in Round Twelve also handing Balwyn their first loss of the year locking up their position on top of the Premier Division ladder and earning themselves a bye in the first week of the finals series The Semi-Final saw the Roos face the Tigers for the first spot in the Grand Final A defensive battle ended with Balwyn holding for a three-point win East Ringwood handled the weather well in the Preliminary Final to defeat the Hawks by six goals a rematch with Balwyn turned out to be a similar type of low-scoring defensive game with less than a kick separating each other The Roos impressed particularly in the third term and hit the lead for the first time in the game through James Belo from 45 out on the run in the fourth term The Tigers managed to wrestle back the lead and hold on for the premiership but there was still a lot to be proud of from an East Ringwood perspective There is no better place to start than with the best player of the 2024 EFNL season Finishing the year as the 2024 Chandler Medallist Belo was outstanding on and off the field in leading the Roos to the Premier Division Grand Final Belo was also the winner of the club's best and fairest award Corey Preston was ultra impressive and consistent throughout the season Just one game last season with East Ringwood due to VFL commitments Preston played 15 games this season with the Roos kicking 27 goals and listed in the best ten times Crossing over from the Southern Football League the side’s leading goalkicker with 39 goals from 19 games Tristan Tweedie and Sam Lowson were also incredibly important to the side’s success Best Win: Round 2 - East Ringwood 23.15 153 def Doncaster East 3.5 23 @ East Ringwood Reserve Hard to single out one particular game as the best of the year the Roos had two tight victories over Blackburn an impressive on-the-road scalp of the reigning premiers but their Round Two thumping of the Lions was an early warning of what East Ringwood could achieve in 2024 After losing to the Lions in the 2023 Elimination Final the two sides met early in the year in a twilight fixture A clinical outing saw East Ringwood post a 130-point win over Doncaster East Skipper James Belo kicked three and was listed best on the ground Ben Osborne resumes his position as Senior Coach as the club aims to put themselves in a position to get back to the Premier Grand Final in 2025 He was named as the Premier Division Team of the Year Coach A couple of key changes include the loss of Sam Lowson who has signed with VFL club Southport Sharks a Team of the Year member and Norwood senior best and fairest winner a young star who joins a very strong Premier Division club which will only see him take his game to another level Not much to fault from a side that went 16-2 in the Home and Away season they’re one of the top contenders this year to keep an eye on Leading Goalkicker: Nicola Davidson (19 Goals) After their dominant 2023 campaign which saw East Ringwood claim the premiership after an undefeated year making a finals series in the first season It was an impressive outing in their new division winning seven games and drawing with the Magpies once Their season started off with a 13-point victory over Knox which saw the Roos come from behind at Three Quarter Time to walk away with the four points they qualified for finals and were the second-ranked attacking side in the division Their year came to an end in the Elimination Final Another outstanding season for Nicola Davidson who took home the club Best and Fairest for the Roos as well as another Team of the Year representation Playing through the midfield and up forward Davidson finished with 19 goals and was in the best in almost every single game she played in Taking out the league's best and fairest for Division One was Paris Gebel-Lamb who was also a Team of the Year member Continues to improve and stamp herself as one of the elite midfielders of the division with an incredible season Kay Wotherspoon was a vital part of the side’s success through the ruck another Team of the Year representative and a third-place finish in the side’s best and fairest count Best Win: Round Five – East Ringwood 7.13 55 def North Ringwood 7.9 51 @ East Ringwood Reserve plenty of choices to pick here but one win that stands out above all others is their come-from-behind victory over North Ringwood The Saints who went on to make a Grand Final led the Roos all afternoon 11 points at Half Time and back out to a 20-point Three Quarter Time lead kicking four goals to zip to take a four-point win The usual suspects were dominant for the Roos including Paris Gebel-Lamb who finished with three for the day Adrian Fittolani who has been the senior coach over the last three seasons announced earlier in the season that this would be his last year coaching the side Fittolani who’s been very important for the success of the women’s program will be coaching the Under 18 Girls this year East Ringwood White (Division Eight): 11-2 Three sides competing in the New Balance 2024 Netball season for East Ringwood It was the Division Eight Roos that took home the premiership defeating the Pioneers by 12 points in the Grand Final The Pioneers had gone through the 13-pointy win over East Burwood in the Semi Final Emily Salmon finished the year with 378 goals this included a historic performance against Coldstream during the season Salmon was well supported by Molly Heymanson who had 256 goals for the year The Division One East Ringwood Blue side made it three from three for the finals They made it to a Preliminary Final after a thrilling three-goal win over Park Orchards in the Semi-Final North Ringwood are looking for a fresh start with a new senior men’s head coach Whilst the senior women’s Division One side have their sights set on promotion the Division Three side are focused on another year of progression another door opens – Robin Nahas’ departure from North Ringwood signals the start of the Matt Price era at Quambee Reserve The new senior head coach will take over a side that finished with a 5-13 record in 2024 Price’s last season in charge was a 2023 premiership-winning campaign at Dromana who has wasted no time in shaping his new side “The boys have put everything into it so far… it’s made my job pretty easy,” said Price “We had to make some major adjustments… there will definitely be a big shift.” Price is just one of many exciting incomings at Quambee Reserve The Saints have added the likes of Jackson Mooney (former Eastern Ranges player) and Xavier Borg (U19.5 Premier Division leading goal kicker) as well as Xavier Borg (aligned with Eastern Ranges in 2025) and VFL-listed player Riley White Adding more experience to the team is polarising ruck Taylor Davidson Aiden Begg is another big name who has committed to Beaconsfield Holm Park Reserve to face Beaconsfield Falling just seven points short of premiership glory in 2024 the North Ringwood senior women’s side have their sights set on promotion in 2025 head coach Jake Ireland is confident that his side can take last year’s learnings into the season ahead “It was definitely a massive success last season,” said Ireland “This team hadn’t really seen Grand Final quality yet… they hadn’t really seen themselves as a team that can contend for a premiership “After we beat Donvale… it became pretty apparent that we’re at that level and we’re ready to push for a premiership” Those at Quambee Reserve will be confident that this side can go one step further in 2025 North Ringwood have retained the majority of their core keeping together what is undoubtedly one of the strongest lists in the competition Team of the Year member and league leader for best on votes is just one of many who have committed to another season in a Saints uniform Joining her will be league-leading goal kicker Eliza Wilson as well as fellow EFNL Division One Team of the Year players Ella Rhodes and Carli Forbes and Skipper Tayla Deane also recommitting ahead of the 2025 season Despite the obvious star power in the ranks senior coach Jake Ireland is adamant that the key to success is a whole-team approach “We think our top players are as good as anyone but our depth is probably one of the best in the league,” said Ireland “Our biggest strength is not necessarily the top players that we have to retain Ireland has set the bar high for his team in 2025 and the years to come we want to aim to be in Premier [Division] and be competitive there” North Ringwood’s development squad is entering just its second ever season in 2025 Finishing seventh in its inaugural campaign the North Ringwood Red side will look for further success in the upcoming season Division One side head coach Jake Ireland says that development side is one of the club’s greatest strengths “[Last year] was our first year of having two teams which is sort of a big step forward for the club,” said Ireland “Only a handful of clubs are able to get two teams up” North Ringwood’s U18B women’s side were crowned premiers in 2024 Many of those players will now use the development side as a stepping stone for their senior footballing careers “That’s the benefit of having two sides – we’ve got the luxury to develop some of these girls in a lower division then obviously progress them up,” said Ireland are confident that the only way for the development side is up in 2025 “It’s going to be a great year for us,” said Ireland “It’s going to be exciting seeing wins in both divisions and hopefully we can see premierships in both divisions… I really think that both teams are going to be in a position to do so” Ringwood East commuters now have even better access to train services, with the opening of 2 new station car parks. Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime. ShareSeen a drone zipping around Ringwood? It’s very likely carrying a coffee from the local shopping centre to someone’s home. Even better, the beverage is likely to arrive piping hot, with latte art intact. The flying coffee is possible because Melbourne’s first drone delivery service launched yesterday, a partnership between Eastland shopping centre, food delivery app DoorDash and Wing, the drone service operated by Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Delivery service DoorDash has begun drone deliveries from the roof of Eastland shopping centre in Ringwood.PENNY STEPHENSWhen an order comes in via the app, Eastland cafes and restaurants prepare the food or drink and place it in a special cardboard bag. A Wing staff member takes it to a rooftop carpark that has been converted to a mini airport for 18 styrofoam drones, each weighing five kilograms and able to carry deliveries weighing just over one kilogram. When a delivery is ready, a drone hovers and releases a tether; the food bag is hooked to the drone and it zooms skywards. The drone climbs to 75 metres and zips through the air at 110km/h to its destination, following an automated route to homes within a seven-kilometre radius. Wing Aviation Australia division operations manager Dave Ojiako-Pettit attaching food to the drone on the rooftop of Eastland shopping centre. PENNY STEPHENSOn arrival, it descends to seven metres and lowers the bag to the ground, where it’s gently released. The tether is retracted and the drone returns to base. The promise is hot coffee, crisp fries and unmelted ice-cream. Drone delivery via DoorDash has been operating since 2022 in Logan, south of Brisbane. “The quality control is really good,” says Wing spokesperson Jesse Suskin. “We’ve delivered tens of thousands of flat whites because customers know they stay hot.” Food flight: DoorDash does drones in delivery world-first with WingThere are efficiency benefits too it travels faster than a car and doesn’t stop for traffic lights,” says Suskin “Drones run on battery and have no emissions If you were to order a packet of spaghetti delivered by drone the delivery uses less energy than you would boiling the water to cook it In the same way you wouldn’t use a city bus to drive yourself around moving a four-door car to buy a burger and fries doesn’t really make sense.” Drone services are regulated by the federal Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which has approved Wing Aviation to deliver food, drink and household items. As well as Logan Wing launched in Canberra in 2022 in partnership with Coles That service paused 18 months later: the capital’s scheme was hampered by raven attacks during nesting season and residents complaining about annoying buzzing The latest generation of drones is quieter and birds have been taken into account “We work closely with bird experts to make sure that our operations don’t negatively affect bird life,” says Dave Ojiako-Pettit the operations manager for Wing in Australia “We avoid sensitive areas such as wetlands and find that birds just think our aircraft are other birds.” Dani Valent receiving a mango juice delivered via drone in Jubilee Park Penny StephensThe Melbourne delivery zone takes in 250,000 potential customers in 26 suburbs including Ringwood The flights from Eastland are completely automated with routing controlled by a system called Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM) which considers no-fly zones but we do have a pilot in the loop,” says Jesse Suskin “Off-site pilots keep an eye on the weather and monitor the system.” Melbourne is an obvious next step for Wing “I can’t think of a city with a better food reputation in Australia or around the world,” says Suskin But does it mean less work for delivery drivers “Nothing changes for our [delivery contractors] who continue to make deliveries through the DoorDash platform.” Dani Valent takes delivery of the takeaway order in a park and the drone’s tether is retracted.Penny StephensAdvertisementDoorDash Air road testBut is it any good I tried three items via drone delivery: a hot coffee even though the trip from Eastland took only three minutes (it took 10 minutes from placing the order to receiving it) but the latte from Bee Keen cafe was delivered steaming hot It didn’t seem to have sloshed around much at all but the milk froth was slightly depleted after a few minutes on the go was icy and thick with no splatter up the sides of the cup I could easily have imagined someone made it and passed it straight to me My ham and cheese toastie from Stazione arrived nice and warm with the grilled bread still crisp and the cheese melted It didn’t have that straight-from-the-press molten factor but I’ve burnt my tongue plenty of times on just-toasted sandwiches I’m always going to prefer to visit a cafe or restaurant for an in-person experience efficiency and some environmental benefits It’s hard to say exactly how much the delivery fee is but in essence the cost to the consumer isn’t higher If I was in the zone and desperate for a coffee maybe I would welcome that whizzing whip in the air above my front door ShareLicense this articleMore: Workers have lost no time in getting rid of Ringwood’s last level crossing Just hours after a crowd of more than 50 locals gathered first rabid bat in the county in 2025, according to a Thursday news release from the McHenry County Department of Health. The health department said the bat was collected by the Veterinary Public Health division and sent for testing. No humans were exposed to the bat, so rabies post-exposure prophylaxis wasn’t recommended. Bats are more active during warmer months, according to the release. Bats that are active in the day, found in an “unusual location” like homes or unable to fly are potentially rabid, according to the release. The health department said “bite and scratch exposures” from bats can be small and go unnoticed. Children should also be “educated” to avoid wild animals, according to the release. “The best way to prevent exposure is to avoid handling wild animals, especially bats,” Maryellen Howell, the animal control director, said in the release. “Since bats can enter through very small gaps, sealing cracks and replacing damaged or loose screens can help keep them out of your home.” The health department gave tips to avoid exposure: People who find a bat in the home, encounter it or were in the same room as the bat while sleeping should keep the animal in an enclosed room and close the door and seal gaps at the base with a towel. If the bat is in a “main living area” and people or pets might have been exposed, people should place an upside down bucket over it to contain it. Residents should immediately call animal control at 815-459-6222 to arrange for the bat’s collection “and potential testing following an exposure risk assessment by the MCDH’s Communicable Disease Program,” according to the release. Bats have to be in good condition, such as with the head intact, and be either alive or recently dead, according to the release. For questions or concerns about rabies exposure, call the Communicable Disease Program at 815-334-4500.
