the roller doors of family-run Sunshine Asian Supermarket slide open revealing a spread of yum cha favourites: siu mai The Feng family’s been hard at their Dim Sum Saturdays since mid-2024 Sectioning off the back of their Riverwood grocer Bill and Winnie Feng – with the help of their three children Anna Helen and David – create a makeshift kiosk-style shopfront to sell their line-up of handmade yum cha favourites Winnie leads the Saturday-only family effort Each dim sum item is meticulously handmade the night before ensuring everything is ready to be cooked fresh in the morning There are neatly boxed dim sum in the freezers (available all week) but it’s the fresh hot dishes that everyone’s here for – prices start at $3 a piece travel spots and more – curated by those who know There are no carts to flag down or cards to stamp but the sheer variety is still overwhelming And there’s a gentle competitiveness to get there early enough for your favourites I went with the bestsellers and a personal favourite: just-fried glutinous rice dumplings plus har gow and siu mai (the two quintessential yum cha dishes which serve as a pretty accurate temperature check for any dim sum spot) juicy and perfectly balanced between sweet and umami Sunshine has been a Riverwood staple since 2015 starting as a stop for Asian fresh produce and pantry staples “My mum wanted us to do something more,” Anna tells Broadsheet ‘What can we do that’s different?’ Because more Asian supermarkets opened in the area.” Winnie decided to add dim sum to their offering flying to Hong Kong to learn the craft from one of Billy’s friends who’d worked at iconic Sydney yum cha restaurants like Marigold then headed back to Hong Kong again to master Cantonese-style barbeque meats which have since become a weekday drawcard at Sunshine Today it’s Billy that oversees the barbeque with the store’s existing kitchen transforming into a commercial setup complete with giant steamers and a roaster Head in during the week to pick up pork belly all displayed in the shop window and available by the kilo or alongside rice and veggies for under $16 Or aim to get there before opening on Saturday as dim sum regularly sells out by lunchtime @sunshine_sydney Local Knowledge: Sun Ming’s “Chinese Soul Food” Has Brought Generations Together Since 1993 Local Knowledge: Strap In for “Super Lamb Soup” and Skewers at Hurstville’s Shang Lamb Soup Local Knowledge: Filipino Food’s Greatest Hits Come Supersized at This Western Sydney Spot curated second-hand clothing and accessories furthering Uturn's mission to make sustainable fashion accessible to all The new Riverwood store is an extension of the existing Uturn outlet just 500 metres away at 95 Bonds Road with over 100,000 unique items across clothing doubling the options for our customers," said Uturn Business Manager Tony Rallis "The growing demand at our current Punchbowl outlet made it clear that expansion was the next step." Housing Australia today celebrated the completion of 51 new social and affordable homes, with doors now open for tenants to move into the dwellings in Riverwood, NSW. Community housing provider St George Community Housing (SGCH) officially opened the new one- and two-bedroom dwellings that consist of 50 social dwellings, and one affordable housing unit. The new homes will provide women aged 55+ and individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness with safe and secure housing. The new energy-efficient development features shared spaces to encourage tenants to come together as a community, whilst in a well-located area that is in close proximity to shopping centres, schools and transport. Housing Australia has funded up to $23 million via the Affordable Housing Bond Aggregator (AHBA), alongside the NSW Government's Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF) Phase 2, to assist with the construction costs of the new development by SGCH. Our purpose is to improve housing outcomes by helping more Australians to access affordable, safe and secure housing. A pull-back in capital availability since the market peak of 2021 is creating opportunities for sponsors focused on fast-growing technology companies that need support to get to the next level “It’s more challenging to secure incremental growth than it was three or four years ago,” said Jeff Parks co-founder and managing partner of growth investor Riverwood Capital “This has put pressure on tech companies to address their cost structure and pricing focus on building market share via geographic and achieve more scale through consolidation.” the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) – which Parks describes as an enabling technology – is driving a rapid evolution of enterprise software Riverwood is seeing plenty of deal flow in its middle market sweet spot as it deploys its fourth series of funds California-based sponsor’s Fund IV and related vehicles closed on USD 1.8bn in 2023 co-founder and managing partner at Riverwood Capital The firm looks to back between five and 10 companies each year “We aim to deploy these funds consistently and in about a four-year cycle,” Parks said adding that Fund IV is now 30%-40% deployed “This predictability is appreciated by our investors because they know we’ll come back to market every three to five years and won’t surprise them with a fundraise in 12 months.” Parks and co-founder Francisco Alvarez-Demalde were members of KKR‘s [NYSE:KKR] technology investment team prior to the global financial crisis (GFC) Working together on large-cap leveraged buyouts (LBOs) the pair sensed there was a need for a specialist focusing on smaller companies within the sector They put this theory to the test with Riverwood Capital The idea was to invest in middle market tech companies – fast-growing businesses with revenue in the high-double-digit millions that were too mature for venture capital but unsuitable for typical LBOs “We felt there should be a more thoughtful dedicated category of investors for such companies,” said Parks “This would combine the growth orientation typical of Silicon Valley startups with the discipline and operational value-add of private equity.” launching a private equity firm in September 2008 – the month that Lehman Brothers collapsed – brought its own set of challenges Riverwood’s founders had to be patient in fundraising closing their debut vehicle in 2011 on USD 780m Riverwood had raised four series of funds and reached USD 6.1bn in assets under management (AUM) as of last March Both the recent HammerTech and Picus Security deals are consistent with Riverwood’s preference to serve as lead investor in growth-stage rounds The firm typically makes investments of USD 25m to USD 250m in size targeting companies with USD 10m to USD 100m in annual recurring revenue (ARR) Average trailing 12-month revenue across the portfolio at entry is USD 52m “We try to find companies in the double-digit millions that are growing 40% to 50% a year,” said Parks “Regardless of macro or micro trends there’s no shortage of companies that fit that bill across all of these areas.” “Bank deals can be attractive because you know they’re going to be actionable much of our sourcing is proprietary,” Parks added the firm often reaches out to companies that have never taken third-party investment and initiates discussions about capital raising options and potential M&A needs This approach is facilitated by organizing the investment team into sub-sector groups – which Riverwood internally calls its “magnets” – covering areas such as financial technology Each area is championed by a senior member of the firm which Parks believes distinguishes Riverwood from other growth equity investors which may rely more heavily on junior staff cold-calling potential targets The firm also works with a network of company founders and executives in the tech sector North America and Latin America are the two largest markets and the firm has made selective investments in the likes of Israel Even when operating as the majority investor Riverwood avoids leverage and focuses on growth to drive returns “Our initiatives aim at top-line growth rather than cost-cutting,” said Parks “We provide our companies with ideas and assistance without being overbearing These initiatives are captured in the Riverwood Scalability Playbook which focuses on a combination of revenue growth and margin expansion to unlock strategic and operational transformation The playbook encompasses areas such as go-to-market strategy For example, part of the proceeds of the HammerTech round were earmarked for business development in Europe and the US with the Australian company seen as a good fit for US expansion Riverwood looks to hold investments for four to five years with a view to maintaining a steady flow of liquidity Looking ahead, Legion Technologies could raise its next round of capital through a Series E or an IPO, Mergermarket reported last July Riverwood led a USD 50m round for the Palo Alto California-based workforce management platform in May 2024 Parks observed that IPO preparedness is part of the value creation playbook underscoring the importance of being proactive “Exits don’t just show up; you have to make them happen,” he said “We work with our companies to help them position themselves and create the right P&L profile to be attractive to potential buyers.” Explore unlimited content like this, available only in the platform.Already a client? NSW government has unveiled plans for a major redevelopment of a public housing estate in Riverwood which would replace 1000 ageing units with close to 4000 private and social housing dwellings But it is likely to face another round of pushback from residents over the scale of the buildings and the proportion of private housing in the redeveloped estate The 30-hectare Riverwood Estate between the M5 and Belmore Road will be one of the state’s largest urban renewal projects The 30-hectare Riverwood Estate sits just south of the M5 on Belmore Road and has been earmarked for redevelopment since 2016 The government initially proposed 6000 new homes but this was reduced to 3900 following an earlier consultation proposes buildings of three to 12 storeys and a mix of about 30 per cent public housing and 70 per cent private But the planning documents stipulate the 30 per cent is a maximum and the final amount will be determined following “engagement with industry during the tender process” Riverwood Community Centre chairman Karl Saleh but the mix of public and private housing should be closer to 50-50 The community was also more likely to support buildings of six to eight storeys “[There is] a long list of people who need social housing and we need to address this urgently,” he said “If we want to bring more people to the area but we need it to be the right development.” An artist’s impression of the redeveloped Riverwood Estate released by the Department of Planning and Environment The government has fought several battles over public housing most notably when it sold off property at Millers Point the NSW Land and Housing Corporation is promising all current public housing residents in Riverwood they will be able to return if a suitable home is available unlike those in Millers Point who could not The work will be done in stages over 15 to 20 years and is expected to generate about 11,000 jobs and $2 billion in local investment The finished precinct would also have 4.8 hectares of new or upgraded open space A “place strategy” produced by design firm Architectus for the government says the case for renewing Riverwood is particularly strong because about 10 per cent of the 50,000 people on the NSW social housing waiting list are in the four allocation zones surrounding the estate A large proportion of those applicants require accessible or modified dwellings while most of the 1081 social housing dwellings on the estate were built in the 1960s and 1970s Riverwood is also somewhat unloved by its community. A 2017 Planning Department survey of 28 residents asked whether they would recommend their neighbourhood as a place to live or visit On a scale from +100 (extremely likely to recommend) to -100 (extremely unlikely) Riverwood residents rated their suburb -39 “This community is asking for change,” the planners concluded The latest census data shows the median weekly household income in Riverwood – population 12,793 – was $1210 Thirty per cent of households had a weekly income below $650 Incoming NSW Land and Housing Corporation chief executive Simon Newport said the redevelopment of the estate would build on the successful 2018 renewal of neighbouring Washington Park The 3.5 hectare site was one of the state’s largest urban renewal projects at the time but it would be dwarfed by the Riverwood redevelopment It has been designated as a state significant precinct and the masterplan is on public exhibition until September 11 – though Saleh said that was not long enough The Morning Edition newsletter is our guide to the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights. there had been concerns at community and government level that there was not sufficient infrastructure to cope with the amount of new residents The government’s initial proposal of 6,000 homes has already been reduced following consultation there are nearly 1,100 ageing social housing dwellings on the estate The NSW social housing waitlist is currently sitting at around 57,600 “The new scope will enable a quicker delivery of more housing and addresses community concerns raised on the potential impact on local traffic and community facilities,” Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said “This new approach will allow hundreds of new and affordable homes to be built in a well-located area without overwhelming local roads and services “We will continue to look at all options to build more social housing in Riverwood as fast as possible.” The rezoning process for focus area along Belmore Road will follow previous renewal work at Washington Park as well as current technical studies and concepts for redevelopment contained within the 2022 exhibited masterplan and which the government forecasts will dampen wait list numbers by around 3% Minister for Housing and Homelessness Rose Jackson said “scrapped plans to deliver more homes and a social housing waitlist with more than 55,000 people in need is the shameful legacy left by the former government” “Our new plan will deliver 50% social and affordable housing we want to deliver more mix-tenure properties that have more social and affordable homes for people in need.” Liberal Federal Member for Banks, David Coleman told the St George & Sutherland Shire Leader that the revised plans for Riverwood estate said the government would continue to work on the “broader masterplan” He said the map for the plans showed that the rezoning only relates to a small portion of the site “So seems clear that this 420 is just the first instalment in what will be a much bigger number,” he said The target date for the rezoning of the first stage is early-to-mid 2024 Green Street’s global news publications are not provided as an investment advisor nor in the capacity of a fiduciary  Our global organization maintains information barriers to ensure the independence of and distinction between our non-regulated and regulated businesses is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 482269) and a private limited company incorporated in England and Wales with company number 06471304 The transaction is currently expected to close in the first half of 2025 View all events > Parker's Kitchen celebrates newest store opening in EvansAugusta ChronicleThe ceremonial ribbon-cutting for the first Parker's Kitchen in Evans and the seventh in the Augusta area was held Friday at the newest location on Washington Road at Riverwood The Evans location is part of Parker's $225 million plan to have 25 stores in the Aiken and Columbia County area in the next three years and creating 650 jobs There are now seven Parker's location in the Augusta area Parker’s centers its service around providing hot freshly prepared meals and grab-and-go food items The Kitchens are recognized by their Lowcountry architecture bright fuel-stop lighting and restrooms that are required to stay obsessively clean More: Here's where the next Parker's Kitchen will be constructed on Bobby Jones Expressway Parker noted that the Riverwood store is the first with a red brick facade Other stores have a washed finish on the bricks but county planners said the red brick better fit the surrounding area "I've never seen this store in red brick," he said "It looks pretty good," adding that he prefers the washed finish Representatives from the Augusta and Columbia County chambers of commerce were on hand Friday for the ribbon cutting Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson and Columbia County Councilwoman Alison Couch also attended Parker said he recently signed a $1.125 billion loan to build 100 new stores and plans to soon begin building in the Jacksonville construction is scheduled to begin soon on a new location on Wheeler Road near Doctor's Hospital and another location on Jimmie Dyess Parkway Plans for another Parker's Kitchen were recently submitted to Columbia County for a billboard variance at 208 Bobby Jones and an adjacent parcel that contain the former locations of U.S Another Kitchen opened in North Augusta and Grovetown in recent weeks.
