Matt Dopierala took over as principal of James Ruse Agricultural High School late last year The school is held up as the jewel in the crown of public education.Credit: Max Mason-Hubers the selective school reigned at the top of HSC league tables until 2023 when it was dethroned by North Sydney Boys says he is sure Ruse will regain the title “I don’t have much doubt at all that that’s within reach,” he says and it’s something I’m sure is going to happen I would hope that would happen in the short term rather than the long term.” but he’s been clear there is only one way to achieve it “This is about us working together; we’re all wanting the same thing The new head speaks to the Herald from the principal’s office which is located in an original 1800s homestead on the school site who was the first to grow corn on farmland at Rose Hill still looms large – a somewhat macabre full-size replica of his tombstone Despite the school now being surrounded by suburbia and known as an academic powerhouse it maintains its agricultural focus (there’s a chicken coop Dopierala says it is important the school offers more than academics “While our students come with a real strength in the intellectual domain so much so his teacher encouraged him to pursue a career in education “My grandmother was a teacher [and] an assistant principal in primary school at a time when I think female leadership wasn’t often seen Year 12 James Ruse students in 1985.Credit: Antonin Cermak He taught at Holroyd High and other schools in south-west Sydney before stints in selective schools including at Fort Street in the inner west and as deputy principal at North Sydney Boys James Ruse has been described as the jewel in the crown of public education, an “easy place to be a nerd”, and has a list of powerful alumni, but recently, it has struggled with actually getting the very top students to accept an enrolment offer, with some students choosing private school scholarships instead. who might have been a big fish in a small pond intellectually “Parents will make decisions around what’s being offered and so there’ll be differences in what facilities and things people can offer,” he says “I think that capitalising on that gift or that ability is going to be much more likely to be enhanced through being around those like-minded people.” Yutong Duan and Julia Zheng all received 99.95 ATARs last year.Credit: Dion Georgopoulos Many students get tutoring ahead of the selective school test Dopierala estimates that those who aren’t tutored are in the minority – but acknowledges tutoring may help them feel “prepared” for more learning at school there’s going to be a tipping point where the hours outside of school are so full of engagement in other things that may mean that there’s not enough focus on the actual schoolwork.” “But my message first and foremost is that the students should be participating fully in the lessons in the school and people will make their own choices around what they do outside of school So how exactly is James Ruse going to regain its top spot But Dopierala has had meetings with the school captains and his message is clear: collaborating to lift the entire cohort’s performance is key “They need to bring those students up with them and so encourage the work in study groups,” he says “We have students lecturing and teaching other students at lunchtimes and after school If they can just help one friend lift a little higher they’re all going to be rewarded in the end by sharing in that success.” Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights. That said, I wasn’t sure what to make of Phil Johnson either when I first met him — a lawyer taking on biological evolution, really? Both ended up as my friends. And both are now sadly gone (here’s my remembrance of Phil) Michael struck me as full of himself but also as not taking himself too seriously as when someone in the audience asked him a gotcha question to make him look foolish I’ve tried to come up with a single word that captures my recollection of Michael at our first encounter and then in the subsequent decades of our friendship and not in a reserved or modest way but with spirit and gusto The funniest incident I recall with Michael occurred at a Greer-Heard Point-Counterpoint Forum that took place in Georgia in February of 2006 The Greer-Heard forum was a generously underwritten annual event featuring two speakers taking opposite sides on an important cultural issue Wright concerning the historicity of the biblical accounts about Jesus and it can be purchased to this day on Amazon.  This forum provoked a remark from Michael that I found hilariously funny and that’s etched into my memory Our exchange took place around the time that the new atheists Richard Dawkins’s The God Delusion would be published later that year But Dawkins’ full throttle assault against theism and his case for atheism were already before the public consciousness Dawkins’ two-part documentary on behalf of atheism had just been released January of 2006 all under the umbrella of The Root of All Evil (Note that I found the first of these parts especially useful in courses I taught on apologetics): Michael wanted nothing to do with the harsh atheism of Dawkins and his fellow horsemen of the atheistic apocalypse as they also came to be called (Christopher Hitchens of God Is Not Great it would be inaccurate to characterize Ruse as trying to reconcile science and religion except in a way that shortchanged religion In his book Can a Darwinian Be a Christian? (Cambridge Even the supreme miracle of the resurrection requires no law-breaking return from the dead or more likely that he really was physically dead but that on and from the third day a group of people That a psychologist or sociologist might be able to explain all of this by natural laws is totally irrelevant — something of a relief What counts is that it happened and that it was unexpected and that it mattered It is from this regeneration of spirit that true Christianity stems not from some law-defying physiological reversals in the early hours of a Sunday morning Any but the least traditional Christians would find this dismissal of a real bodily resurrection of Jesus as unacceptable and irreconcilable with Christian orthodoxy even if the resurrection of Jesus could not be grounded factually whose childhood experiences with Christianity were quite negative Michael came from a Quaker background that he regarded as positive and which I sensed he still at some level wanted to be true.  Ruse has engaged in heated exchanges with new atheists the pusillanimous appeaser of Hitler at Munich Jerry Coyne reviewed one of my books (Can a Darwinian be a Christian?) using the Orwellian quote that only an intellectual could believe the nonsense I believe in Myers has referred to me as a ‘clueless gobshite.’” Ruse said new atheists do the side of science a “grave disservice,” a “disservice to scholarship,” and that “Dawkins in The God Delusion would fail any introductory philosophy or religion course,” and that The God Delusion makes him “ashamed to be an atheist.” Ruse concluded saying “I am proud to be the focus of the invective of the new atheists let’s finally get to the funniest incident I recall with Michael a heaven of eternal bliss compatible with theism and incompatible with atheism Here is how Michael described heaven: “I would love for heaven to be real Heaven for me would be a new Mozart opera every night and fish-and-chips during intermission.” Funny at our podcast interview together with Subboor Ahmad in early 2024 Michael was going to a Mozart opera that night He wasn’t going to miss it even though he was breathing oxygen through a nasal cannula during the interview and would need the additional oxygen that night at the opera I found Michael’s vision of heaven amusing but perhaps closer to truth than he might have imagined. In Catholic priest Thomas Dubay’s The Evidential Power of Beauty (a book I used in some of my graduate seminars on theology and science) Dubay also sings the praises of Mozart as a window into the divine While it may be hard to imagine that any activity could be continued for all eternity without engendering boredom the appreciation of beauty—a never ending progression of ever increasing visions of beauty—seems immune to the boredom problem Michael therefore also made a profound point The incident with Michael that made the greatest impression on me and which showed me the depth and kindness of his humanity occurred at the University of Central Arkansas in the fall of 2003 It was a symposium featuring the two of us But we also had lots of interactions with students especially students from the honors college about thirty honors students were seated at tables in a plush hall Michael went to each student individually and shook hands asking with genuine interest about each of them Another incident that stood out to me from the symposium at the University of Central Arkansas was when Michael seated in conversation with faculty and students I don’t recall what prompted Michael to remove his upper-body clothing but it wasn’t gratuitous and the students loved it It seems that Michael had a penchant for showing off his chest and about twenty others (including evolutionists such as David Hull and Richard Dawkins) sending us several images of himself getting and showing off a newly minted tattoo I vaguely recall that Michael may have lost or won bet or somehow had been challenged by his students to get a tattoo of something evolutionarily significant He chose a classic organism from the Cambrian the trilobite (one of the first arthropods Here are the images of Michael getting his trilobite tattoo showing the ordeal that it was (as evident in the pain on his face) as well as his satisfaction once the ordeal was over As Michael put it in the email alerting us to his new tattoo: “I now expect my intelligent design friends to have Jesus tattooed on their right arms.” As it is I never felt obligated to meet that expectation But I was happy for Michael in the pleasure he took in his tattoo: If some of my remembrances of Michael seem frivolous he was also a serious defender of academic freedom and expression he and I were trying to complete one more project on the controversy between Darwinism and intelligent design I sensed that this might be his swan song—his usual energy on past projects was not there and it largely fell to me to try to pull this project together for this project we needed to enlist several Darwinists I expected with Michael’s extensive rolodex in that world that enlisting the needed Darwinists would be easy I don’t mean to be cagey about this project but it still has a chance of coming to light and I hope it does for my sake and Michael’s as indeed a fitting swan song for all his efforts to promote freedom of thought and expression on the questions that most animated him I won’t at this moment be divulging information about the precise details of this project I will share an exchange that Michael had with a prominent Darwinian biologist in trying to enlist this biologist to our project.  I no longer feel the need to keep this exchange secret I won’t disclose the identity of the biologist in question my point is to underscore how freedom of thought and expression in the academy are regularly suppressed and that it takes the courage of a Michael Ruse to stand against such suppression Here’s how the biologist in question responded to a request to contribute to our project In the interest of keeping the precise nature of the project as well as the biologist in question confidential clearly marked with brackets and ellipses: =====Begin email from biologist to Michael [Your assistant] wrote me to ask for a contribution to what he said was a project planned by you and William Dembski… I was curious about the scope of this project so I wrote to inquire to a set of people who were involved in the Dover trial.  These included [omit names of seven prominent opponents of intelligent design].  [All these] who participated in the trial … were dismayed They individually expressed a range of reasons why this would be a terrible idea either scientifically (there never was) or polemically with respect to ID in the past 20 years — The original proponents of ID have mostly either scattered to the winds or have labored in quasi-academic obscurity.  (I will not characterize Dembski’s abstract mathematical work of the past decades other than to offer the view that they have nothing to say about evolution or science.)  There still has never been a peer-reviewed scientific publication by an ID proponent.  No one could think of “new” issues or aspects of ID that have emerged.  What is the definition of a dead horse — We live in a far greater era of disinformation and fakery than we lived in 20 years ago.  If ID was a “Trojan horse” and a construct of smoke and mirrors then how much easier will it be to gull a substantial portion of the populace now?  How will this help the cause of science and science education – or even if you want to assume your philosopher’s mantle the cause of explaining legitimate philosophy conservative Christians are determined to relitigate the ID battle.  They are using the same tactics of bringing in persuasive lawyers and launching advertising campaigns to voters.  They are also assaulting textbooks.  Ken Miller’s biology text was criticized in Texas for chapters that dealt with Covid-19 (which was alleged by critics not to be a disease) and the absence of a balanced treatment of ID with evolution.  How will your planned publication help with this apart from helping the ID proponents claim that scientists are taking them seriously — One of our colleagues remarked: “since 2004 when Debating Design: From Darwin to DNA first appeared Dembski has repeatedly evinced inappropriate behavior — failing to address pertinent criticism — that should make anyone leery about participating in an ostensibly scholarly enterprise with him After twenty years (or more) of not playing nicely with others he can hardly expect eager cooperation at this stage.”  As another pointed out your past collaborations with Dembski have allowed him to pose as a mainstream academic which some regard as a debatable claim.  Setting aside any abstract mathematical contributions he has no relevance to any inquiry about evolution or science in general — The Discovery Institute and its friends would like nothing better than the academic legitimacy that you would collude with in … this pseudo-debate.  This may not matter to you because you may feel that open discussion is of general interest to the public and salutary to its understanding of issues central to human endeavor.  If so that view seems short-sighted.  We who sacrificed years of effort to explain and ultimately counter the pretensions of ID as science which was instantiated in Judge Jones’s 142-page decision in which not a single sentence validated any of the arguments of the ID proponents will not thank you for giving comfort to these opponents of science and rational thought even as their legal and administrative minions redouble their efforts to overturn everything that we accomplished if for no other reason than for the sake of respect for your colleagues who sacrificed a great deal – professionally Here is how Michael responded. Note that Michael was a key expert witness in the 1981 Arkansas creation trial (McLean v. Arkansas Board of Education) which he cites at the end of his email below and notes that it incurred for him also a professional cost The Dover trial mentioned above was decided in 2005.  =====Begin response from Michael to biologist Goodness – I don’t think I have ever been solicited/begged by a letter such as yours – I am not a sociologist so I cannot report on the fate of IDT today – new conceptual changes number of enthusiasts and so forth – what I can say is that a year ago I flew to Krakow in Poland to debate Michael Behe – there were about three hundred in the audience – at least half of whom were either priests or nuns – I estimate there were about five in the audience who agreed with me!  I didn’t take offence – nothing personal – philosophers don’t take offence at different conceptual issues – I am not a Thomist but I have deep respect for St Thomas as a theologian/philosopher                   I guess that is why I am not inclined to accede to your earnest pleading – if I were a scientist it would be one thing – but I am a philosopher and I think it is a moral obligation to take on Dembski and the ideas he endorses/promotes – there are important issues here about the science-religion relationship and it is legitimate for a science to admit to the influence of religion – Dawkins would obviously say “no” – I am not at all sure that Dobzhansky or Fisher would agree – our [project has yet to be completed] but if I were still teaching – I am 84 and now retired after 55 years in the classroom (in the job beyond my dreams) – I would use it as the focus of a graduate seminar on the science and religion interface —  more than teaching it And that I guess is why you are glad not to be a philosopher and why I could never be other than a philosopher I am a little offended that the contributions of others are considered pertinent whereas my contributions (and costs) go unmentioned – if you look at the volume I published after Arkansas – But Is It Science – just see what my fellow philosophers like Larry Laudan said about me — obviously they did not deter me then and they do not deter me now =====End response from Michael to biologist This exchange, of course, raises many questions about the legitimacy of intelligent design as a coherent intellectual and scientific position. Addressing such questions is for another day and time — I would urge readers with such questions to start by consulting the second edition of The Design inference But let me close this remembrance with the following thought: If intelligent design is a legitimate how could we ever know that if it is suppressed in the way that this biologist urged Michael to abandon his project with me Michael and I differed sharply on the merits and truth of intelligent design But he was a valiant defender of freedom of thought and expression letting inquiry proceed where it will and following evidence to its ultimate destination—however distasteful that might be.  Cross-posted from Bill Dembski at Substack Israel Kasnett 2 min readA carefully orchestrated manoeuvre within the Palestinian Authority on Saturday saw the appointment of Hussein al-Sheikh as “Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and Vice President of the State of Palestine.” presented as a significant step toward transition is in reality a calculated ruse by PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas to project an image of reform to the international community particularly Western governments and donors It is a superficial reshuffling of loyalists that entrenches Abbas’s control sidesteps genuine democratic processes and maintains the status quo of his autocratic rule a senior distinguished fellow at the Gatestone Institute and a fellow of the Jerusalem Centre for Security and Foreign Affairs (JCFA) said al-Sheikh’s appointment is nothing short of “musical chairs” and should not be taken seriously “Why do we assume that this is a new school of thought This is someone from the young guard representing the old guard,” he said “The West is again falling for the same mistakes they made in the past,” he added was framed as a formal elevation to the number two position in the PA leadership hierarchy this was not a competitive or democratic process and was swiftly approved by the 16-member PLO Executive Committee which is stacked with Abbas loyalists and which he himself chairs al-Sheikh’s appointment was hardly surprising He has long been regarded as Abbas’s unofficial deputy wielding significant influence as a key negotiator with Israel and a gatekeeper of PA patronage networks His formal elevation offers no substantive change in policy 89 years old and in the 20th year of a four-year presidential term faces mounting pressure at home and abroad Palestinians are increasingly disillusioned with the PA’s corruption ineffectiveness and lack of democratic legitimacy particularly the United States and European Union which provide critical financial support to the PA have urged reforms and a clear succession plan to ensure stability in the post-Abbas era Al-Sheikh is not a reformist or an independent figure; he is one of Abbas’s closest allies deeply embedded in the PA’s patronage system As head of the PLO’s General Authority for Civil Affairs al-Sheikh has been a key interlocutor with Israel on security coordination and a central figure in distributing PA resources His elevation rewards loyalty rather than competence or public support signalling that the PA’s priorities remain self-preservation and control al-Sheikh’s new title is superficial as Abbas retains ultimate authority as PA president and PLO chairman Al-Sheikh’s role is subordinate and ceremonial unless Abbas chooses to delegate power – an unlikely prospect given his history of centralizing control The PA leadership remains a closed circle of loyalists recycled through various titles Al-Sheikh’s elevation is merely the latest iteration following a pattern whereby Abbas appoints trusted allies to prominent roles but then distances them This tactic allows Abbas to maintain control while creating the illusion of change a strategy he has employed for decades to deflect criticism and sustain international support The appointment was designed to assuage Western concerns about reform and succession Abbas is pretending to signal that the PA is preparing for a post-Abbas era Al-Sheikh is a familiar and acceptable figure to the United States and European Union making him a convenient choice to project continuity this is a facade: the appointment changes nothing about the PA’s anti-Israel policies the West should see through this charade and demand real change such as elections it appears Western governments are once again falling for the Palestinians’ ruse Palestinian Authority Following reports of racism at James Ruse Agricultural a look at how digital prejudice fuels real-world hate against Indians it is likely that this alarming issue would have been swept under the rug it is perplexing that this prejudice is not only perpetrated by far-right or traditionally “racist” groups but also by individuals who position themselves as political progressives and “allies” to the Indian community A post shared by Mehreen Faruqi (@mehreenfaruqi) The vilification of migrants and their descendants is, unfortunately, not a new phenomenon in the Western world. Some might even argue that it has become an ingrained tradition and discrimination targeting people of South Asian heritage has taken on a more insidious tone It has become an acceptable form of social “othering” in many digital and a food vendor who gained internet infamy after footage of unsanitary food preparation emerged Several residents urged him to adopt better hygiene practices aiming to improve the image of their city and these local efforts to address such issues rarely make headlines in the West owing much of its success to innovative public space projects and environmental health initiatives grassroots commitment to tackling pollution and improving hygiene standards in India—efforts that rarely make it to the front pages of Western news outlets The persistence of the stereotype that Indians and other South Asians are inherently dirty and unhygienic has led to a wave of racism that is both harmful and dangerous This vilification is rooted in the perception of Indians as “less than” others of their communities and countries as synonymous with filth and pollution The ramifications of such a narrative are profound one that has been used in history to demonise and dehumanise entire populations While the recent incidents at James Ruse Agricultural High School may seem far removed from the busy streets of Kolkata or the green spaces of Bhopal the underlying prejudice that fuels these acts of hate is directly tied to how India is portrayed in digital spaces and the media These harmful stereotypes are not born in a vacuum They are amplified by digital platforms where sensationalism As influencers chase followers and internet fame the real-world consequences of these actions go largely unacknowledged The students who endure the consequences of this prejudice their suffering often silenced by a system that chooses to ignore their pain The culture of racism that permeates online spaces is a reflection of broader societal attitudes and it is incumbent upon all of us—particularly those in positions of influence—to challenge these stereotypes and engage in a more nuanced empathetic conversation about race and identity READ MORE: ECCV report finds majority of racism incidents go unreported Indian Link empowers and elevates the South Asian community in Australia, by telling their stories and unpacking their experiences in a nuanced and unbiased manner. © Indian Link Media Group. But as the rise of artificial intelligence creates ever bigger energy demands it’s getting hard for the industry to hide the true costs of the data centers powering the tech revolution Amazon is the largest emitter of the big five tech companies by a mile – the emissions of the second-largest emitter Amazon has been kept out of the calculation above because its differing business model makes it difficult to isolate data center-specific emissions figures for the company “It’s down to creative accounting,” explained a representative from Amazon Employees for Climate Justice an advocacy group composed of current Amazon employees who are dissatisfied with their employer’s action on climate “Amazon – despite all the PR and propaganda that you’re seeing about their solar farms about their electric vans – is expanding its fossil fuel use whether it’s in data centers or whether it’s in diesel trucks.” The most important tools in this “creative accounting” when it comes to data centers are renewable energy certificates These are certificates that a company purchases to show it is buying renewable energy-generated electricity to match a portion of its electricity consumption – the catch is that the renewable energy in question doesn’t need to be consumed by a company’s facilities the site of production can be anywhere from one town over to an ocean away Recs are used to calculate “market-based” emissions or the official emissions figures used by the firms When Recs and offsets are left out of the equation we get “location-based emissions” – the actual emissions generated from the area where the data is being processed the sum of their “location-based” emissions in 2022 would rank them as the 33rd highest-emitting country Many data center industry experts also recognize that location-based metrics are more honest than the official “Location-based [accounting] gives an accurate picture of the emissions associated with the energy that’s actually being consumed to run the data center. And Uptime’s view is that it’s the right metric,” said Jay Dietrich, the research director of sustainability at Uptime Institute a leading data center advisory and research organization Nevertheless, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, a carbon accounting oversight body, allows Recs to be used in official reporting, though the extent to which they should be allowed remains controversial between tech companies and has led to a lobbying battle over GHG Protocol’s rule-making process between two factions On one side there is the Emissions First Partnership, spearheaded by Amazon and Meta It aims to keep Recs in the accounting process regardless of their geographic origins this is only a slightly looser interpretation of what GHG Protocol already permits argues that there needs to be time-based and location-based matching of renewable production and energy consumption for data centers or its goal to have all of its facilities run on renewable energy 24 hours a day or its goal to have all its facilities running on 100% carbon-free energy 100% of the time making zero carbon-based energy purchases by 2030 Google has already phased out its Rec use and Microsoft aims to do the same with low-quality “unbundled” (non location-specific) Recs by 2030 Yet this is precisely what can happen under the guidance given the contractual/Rec-based reporting method.” To GHG Protocol’s credit, the organization does ask companies to report location-based figures alongside their Rec-based figures no company includes both location-based and market-based metrics for all three subcategories of emissions in the bodies of their annual environmental reports location-based numbers are only directly reported (that is not hidden in third-party assurance statements or in footnotes) by two companies – Google and Meta And those two firms only include those figures for one subtype of emissions: scope 2 or the indirect emissions companies cause by purchasing energy from utilities and large-scale generators Scope 2 is the category that includes the majority of the emissions that come from in-house data center operations as it concerns the emissions associated with purchased energy – mainly Data centers should also make up a majority of overall scope 2 emissions for each company except Amazon given that the other sources of scope 2 emissions for these companies stem from the electricity consumed by firms’ offices and retail spaces – operations that are relatively small and not carbon-intensive Amazon has one other carbon-intensive business vertical to account for in its scope 2 emissions: its warehouses and e-commerce logistics For the firms that give data center-specific data – Meta and Microsoft – this holds true: data centers made up 100% of Meta’s market-based (official) scope 2 emissions and 97.4% of its location-based emissions The huge differences in location-based and official scope 2 emissions numbers showcase just how carbon intensive data centers really are and how deceptive firms’ official emissions numbers can be reports its official scope 2 emissions for 2022 as 273 metric tons CO2 equivalent – all of that attributable to data centers Under the location-based accounting system that number jumps to more than 3.8m metric tons of CO2 equivalent for data centers alone – a more than 19,000 times increase A similar result can be seen with Microsoft The firm reported its official data center-related emissions for 2022 as 280,782 metric tons CO2 equivalent that number jumps to 6.1m metric tons CO2 equivalent While Meta’s reporting gap is more egregious both firms’ location-based emissions are higher because they undercount their data center emissions specifically with 97.4% of the gap between Meta’s location-based and official scope 2 number in 2022 being unreported data center-related emissions Specific data center-related emissions numbers aren’t available for the rest of the firms. However, given that Google and Apple have similar scope 2 business models to Meta and Microsoft it is likely that the multiple on how much higher their location-based data center emissions are would be similar to the multiple on how much higher their overall location-based scope 2 emissions are the sum of location-based emissions in this category between 2020 and 2022 was at least 275% higher (or 3.75 times) than the sum of their official figures Amazon did not provide the Guardian with location-based scope 2 figures for 2020 and 2021 so its official (and probably much lower) numbers were used for this calculation for those years Big tech companies also rent a large portion of their data center capacity from third-party data center operators (or “colocation” data centers). According to the Synergy Research Group large tech companies (or “hyperscalers”) represented 37% of worldwide data center capacity in 2022 with half of that capacity coming through third-party contracts While this group includes companies other than Google it gives an idea of the extent of these firms’ activities with third-party data centers Those emissions should theoretically fall under scope 3 all emissions a firm is responsible for that can’t be attributed to the fuel or electricity it consumes When it comes to a big tech firm’s operations this would encapsulate everything from the manufacturing processes of the hardware it sells (like the iPhone or Kindle) to the emissions from employees’ cars during their commutes to the office scope 3 emissions include the carbon emitted from the construction of in-house data centers as well as the carbon emitted during the manufacturing process of the equipment used inside those in-house data centers It may also include those emissions as well as the electricity-related emissions of third-party data centers that are partnered with whether or not these emissions are fully included in reports is almost impossible to prove “Scope 3 emissions are hugely uncertain,” said Dietrich “This area is a mess just in terms of accounting.” some third-party data center operators put their energy-related emissions in their own scope 2 reporting so those who rent from them can put those emissions into their scope 3 Other third-party data center operators put energy-related emissions into their scope 3 emissions expecting their tenants to report those emissions in their own scope 2 reporting all firms use market-based metrics for these scope 3 numbers which means third-party data center emissions are also undercounted in official figures Of the firms that report their location-based scope 3 emissions in the footnotes only Apple has a large gap between its official scope 3 figure and its location-based scope 3 figure This is the only sizable reporting gap for a firm that is not data center-related – the majority of Apple’s scope 3 gap is due to Recs being applied towards emissions associated with the manufacturing of hardware (such as the iPhone) Apple does not include transmission and distribution losses or third-party cloud contracts in its location-based scope 3 It only includes those figures in its market-based numbers under which its third party cloud contracts report zero emissions (offset by Recs) Therefore in both of Apple’s total emissions figures – location-based and market-based – the actual emissions associated with their third party data center contracts are nowhere to be found.” Even though big tech hides these emissions, they are due to keep rising. Data centers’ electricity demand is projected to double by 2030 due to the additional load that artificial intelligence poses, according to the Electric Power Research Institute Google and Microsoft both blamed AI for their recent upticks in market-based emissions “The relative contribution of AI computing loads to Google’s data centers current CEO of utility storage firm Gridstor and former site lead for Google’s data center energy strategy unit [AI] was not the main thing that we were worried about Taylor explained that most of the growth that he saw in data centers while at Google was attributable to growth in Google Cloud as most enterprises were moving their IT tasks to the firm’s cloud servers Whether today’s power grids can withstand the growing energy demands of AI is uncertain. One industry leader – Marc Ganzi, the CEO of DigitalBridge, a private equity firm that owns two of the world’s largest third-party data center operators – has gone as far as to say that the data center sector may run out of power within the next two years And as grid interconnection backlogs continue to pile up worldwide, it may be nearly impossible for even the most well intentioned of companies to get new renewable energy production capacity online in time to meet that demand. This article was amended on 18 September 2024. Apple contacted the Guardian after publication to share that the firm only did partial audits for its location-based scope 3 figure. A previous version of this article erroneously claimed that the gap in Apple’s location-based scope 3 figure was data center-related. 12 Apr 2025 14:00:00 GMT?.css-1txiau5-AnswerContainer{color:var(--GlobalColorScheme-Text-secondaryText2);}Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa won 2–1 over Dunav Ruse on Sat This is 31 of the Second Professional League Predicted lineups are available for the match a few days in advance while the actual lineup will be available about an hour ahead of the match The current head to head record for the teams are Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa 1 win(s) Haven't scored in their last 2 matches Have scored 6 goals in their last 5 matches Dunav Ruse have won the previous 4 matches against Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa Who won between Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa and Dunav Ruse on Sat 12 Apr 2025 14:00:00 GMT?Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa won 2–1 over Dunav Ruse on Sat 12 Apr 2025 14:00:00 GMT.InsightsHave scored 6 goals in their last 5 matches Lokomotiv Gorna Oryahovitsa is playing home against Dunav Ruse on Sat by Olivia Cleal | November 12 Students from one of NSW’s top selective state schools have been accused of using derogatory language targeted at other students and parents from different cultural backgrounds who recently ended her tenure as principal of James Ruse Agricultural High addressed a P&C meeting last week to address allegations of racism in the school James Ruse is considered one of the most prestigious state schools in NSW: located in the north-western Sydney suburb Carlingford the high school was the top performer in HSC results for 27 consecutive years before North Sydney Boys High School topped the state last year Speaking to parents in her final week as principal last week – as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald – Powell revealed incidents of targeted racism at South Asian students in the school “Words have been used particularly targeting students of South Asian heritage words that refer to the colour of their skin words that associate them with particular animals which I hope you will know what that word is and calling them slaves – that is absolutely intolerable,” Powell told parents at the meeting the N-word is not just being used now towards people It’s actually being used as an expletive.” Powell said students are learning this behaviour online and it is up to parents to educate and stamp it out students at James Ruse have reportedly told Powell that some parents in the school have forbidden their children to be social with other students in the school “Students have told me that their parents won’t let them go to their friend’s houses because they’re from a different community background,” Powell told the parents at the meeting It’s not just students that are victims of racism within the school community Powell said there have been reports of parents “targeted” with threats of physical parents have been “frightened to volunteer at events and in the canteen” In a statement provided to The Sydney Morning Herald a spokesperson from the Department of Education said there was just one incident of racist language recorded by the school in the last year and action has been taken to provide counsel to the students involved In response to the threats targeted at parents the spokesperson said they were not referred to police as there were only rumours of these incidents “James Ruse Agricultural High School does not tolerate racism and promotes a culture of inclusion at the school,” the spokesperson told The Sydney Morning Herald “All our students are taught the importance of social justice and the need to behave with integrity.” Every day, one in five Australian school students are victims of racism It’s even worse in the United States: according to government statistics one in three high school students say they have experienced racism in school at some point in their life Some believe it will only get worse, now that Donald Trump – who has been explicit in his contempt of immigrants and non-white people – has been elected as the next president of the US spoke about a conversation she had with her friend She pleaded her son’s teacher to “keep your ears open in the hallways” This is heartbreaking. excluded at this school I’ve even heard that from prospective parents prospective parents said to me ‘these particular social media groups we can’t engage in them because they’re in a different language to the one we understand’.” Powell did not name the ethnic background or the language used by parents accused of excluding others but said she had previously been told that the school’s president “had to be from the Chinese community” “Students have told me that their parents won’t let them go to their friend’s houses because they’re from a different community background.” The speech was sparked by a series of concerning incidents at the school and a backlash to some emails sent to parents which encouraged them to communicate school information in English so everyone felt included Powell, who took up a new post as Sydney Girls High principal on Monday, told the meeting of parents that she had been reticent to go into details of racism in the emails because “The Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph would have a field day if they found out about anything negative […] they would love to report on that” Powell said she had since learnt of more concerning behaviour from parents “People have been targeting some of our parents She said that included threats of physical violence while some parents had been “frightened to volunteer at events and in the canteen” violence” a department spokeswoman said the threats were not referred to police as they were rumours only The spokeswoman said Powell had spoken at the P and C meeting to dispel rumours that were self-assertiveness has found its way into the pronouncements of many African countries While the underlying mood most certainly dates back to the period before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 that it has been boosted by the global diplomatic fallout of the conflict Hitherto subtly indignant at their perceived disregard by the major powers these countries welcomed the breach that opened up in the wake of Western attempts to forge a common front against Russia as an opportunity to ventilate long-simmering grievances Judging by signals across the Sahel, the renewed clamor for “sovereignty” seems all-encompassing. For instance, Mali’s decision last year to drop French the so-called “language of the colonizer,” as its official language (a status it had enjoyed since the country’s independence in September 1960) and replace it with “thirteen national languages” seems to have been motivated by this newfangled desire for “autonomy,” although this time in the realm of language A summary of global news developments with CFR analysis delivered to your inbox each morning. Weekdays CFR President Mike Froman analyzes the most important foreign policy story of the week get the latest news and insights from the Council’s experts examining the debates and efforts to improve health worldwide. Weekly Indeed, if Burkina Faso’s junta leader Ibrahim Traore has his way, the region’s CFA franc currency, which he sees as the prime illustration of “monetary imperialism,” will be on the next consignment to the anti-colonial landfill. As he told an interviewer in February last year By far the greatest indication of these countries’ apparent determination to “break their bonds” and regain their “sovereignty” is their stance on foreign military presence and bases. Last week, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara confirmed the imminent departure of some six hundred French military personnel from the country had indicated that French troops numbering three hundred fifty will withdraw from the country France) will be mandated to shut down its military bases across the country by the end of 2025 a decision later confirmed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko One need not be an expert on Francophone West African history to understand the sources of these countries’ angst against France, nor does one have to fully sympathize with them to see that the one-time colonial overlord has its work cut out for it in the region. The fact that, in recent times, Paris has “increased aid to the continent begun the return of cultural artefacts stolen during the colonial wars and reached out beyond the usual inter-government ties to engage younger generations and civil society” indicates its sudden realization that having found itself on the back foot in the region the sovereignty rhetoric raises more questions than answers the underlying implication that these countries were never “sovereign,” meaning that any awareness on their part of their agency is only due somehow to a recent epiphany it seems to contradict the historical data on the dynamics of the interaction between France and its former (African) colonies whereby a succession of (military and civilian) leaders sometimes had to act under direct pressure from Paris; and yet were all too happy to manipulate the latter to take sides in often-bitter contestations with domestic political rivals and the suggestion that France more or less had its way over their helpless protestations does not seem to stand up to scrutiny One finds it difficult to believe that France would have maintained military bases in various African countries for so long if these countries simultaneously had no (defense and political) use for them France could have stood its ground had any of the countries with which it had entered into military agreements insisted that it evacuate it is odd indeed that the same countries now vigorously asserting their “sovereignty” do not seem to mind signing with Russia and China agreements that are hardly different from the “colonial” treaties that they now accuse France of foisting upon them If the problem is being under the suzerainty of a foreign power and the solution is breaking free with the aim of attaining “full decolonization,” why trade French “imperialism” for its Russian or Chinese equivalent how can countries which continue to be dependent on foreign development aid (for example nearly half of the Nigerien government’s budget is said to derive from various foreign donors) posture about sovereignty what is sovereignty if you cannot afford to pay your own bills and how can you insist on holding your head high while holding your hand out it is not insignificant that some of the most ardent avowers of “full sovereignty” for Africa are certified despots who are increasingly denying common freedoms detaining without trial opposition journalists and activists who dare to speak out about rising insecurity and inflation or dare challenge the various juntas for a credible program of return to civilian rule there are strong grounds to suspect that the clamor for “sovereignty” that we are seeing is less about a true quest for African self-determination and more about creating political distraction for purposes of regime consolidation Now, there is a serious debate to be had about sovereignty, particularly about how to challenge prevailing narratives on self-determination in a Eurocentric world order, a subject on which, incidentally, many African scholars, notably Cornell political scientist and international relations theorist Siba Grovogui unimaginative “Pan-Africanism,” has nothing of the nuance and deliberateness of this scholarship like a desperate gambit to hoard power while distracting attention from core issues of democratic reform Nathan Schoonover contributed to the research for this article Madison Keys edged out Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-6 (1) She’ll play fellow American Danielle Collins American Madison Keys, the No 19 seed, edged out Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse 7-6 (1), 2-6, 7-5 to move into the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park will play the winner of the match between Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava and American Danielle Collins 7-5) in the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season In the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season other second-round results (Melbourne Park Website#d90d178da108e4d803546d2f{display:none} Listen on: Apple Podcasts | Spotify Also on the daily podcast: how to plan a prisoner release and apologising at work A handpicked article read aloud from the latest issue of The Economist Our weekly podcast on democracy in America.
