National MP Tom Rutherford has been praised for his bravery after he stopped his car on a highway outside Tauranga to talk with a distressed man in his mid-20s on the busy road
The Bay of Plenty MP today said he was returning from the Te Puna Harvest Market with his fiancée on State Highway 2 in a constant stream of traffic about 3pm on Saturday when he encountered a man standing in the lane he was travelling in
“He was moving between lanes as vehicles travelled at 80km/h
hopped out and ran to talk with him to get him at least into the middle section of the road,” Rutherford said
a couple of others from the community stopped and parked their vehicles on either side so we could block a lane on each side at least
Rutherford said he and another man who stopped sat with the man and talked with him about what he was going through
they got him to get into one of their vehicles
where he could wait safely for further help to arrive
The police arrived and took the man to the hospital
Leonie Wilson also pulled over on SH2 after seeing the man running between the lanes and called the police
She saw Rutherford standing in the middle of the road
talking to the man and trying to get him off the road to safety
standing in the middle of the highway risking his own life to help this guy he didn’t know,” she said
Rutherford said it just so happened he was driving past yesterday and did what anyone would do to look after people in the community
The MP was hesitant to talk about the incident
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he was unaware of Rutherfords heroics over the weekend but it “sounded like him”
he’s got a great future… he really cares about people

(WTVF) — Rutherford County Schools has delayed implementing a controversial parent responsibility zone plan that would have shifted school transportation responsibilities to families living within certain distances of schools
which most school board members approved last week
would have eliminated bus service for students in grades K through 5 who live within a mile of their school and students in grades 6 through 12 who live within a mile and a half
Jeanie Ballard is firmly against parent responsibility zones
Will some kids get to ride the bus in the neighborhood
and some don't get to ride the bus in the neighborhood
I don't know how they're going to do it," said Ballard
"I think it's really unsafe to be walking to school," said Ballard
people with bad intentions for our children."
she said the plan doesn't work for working parents
I don't want to leave my son at school for eight or nine hours," said Ballard
Director of Schools Jimmy Sullivan addressed parents in a video
saying the plan passed in part to address rising costs — but he acknowledged the zones may not work for every community
"After speaking individually to school board members we recommend the proposal be tabled for a school year until we complete the study and analysis and provide further recommendation," said Sullivan
Ballard still believes the district should explore better ways to save money
"I'm happy that they are going to table the idea
It's just inevitable that I have to worry about this," said Ballard
Board Members said the parent responsibility zone policy could save the district up to $3 million
Sullivan said student safety is always his top priority
so he's tabling the plan for a year for further research and discussion

I'm not sure there is a story that's brought a bigger smile to our faces than this one celebrating Ms
The story of her service during World War II is amazing in itself — she is a true Rosie the Riveter
What was also amazing was to see was how an entire community turned out to celebrate her
At a time when US scientists are under attack from their own government
the illiteracy around these elephantine fantasies is dangerous
You will never ever see a living woolly mammoth. While this is an obvious truth to most geneticists, zoologists and mammoth experts, the endless promises that you might get to meet an extant version of this very-much extinct elephantid apparently necessitate me typing it
published a non-peer-reviewed paper in which it has genetically engineered a mouse to express a gene that relates to mammoth hair
resulting in a mouse with slightly longer hair than normal
Mice are a crucial part of the story of genetics
not least because of their utility in the study of human genes
But this unusually hirsute mouse was not created for any such noble purpose but rather as a farcical little sideshow for the fantasy that one day Colossal will breed a living mammoth
“The woolly mammoth is a vital defender of the earth,” it claims on its website
despite the fact that mammoths are extinct and therefore – I feel this shouldn’t really need saying – have literally no role in defending the Earth
Colossal states that packs of mammoths were a crucial part of tundra ecosystem management in their heyday tens of thousands of years ago – that much is true – and that bringing them back might be a useful tool in the fight against global warming
It is a ridiculous suggestion for tackling the climate crisis – and more than that
How is it folly? Let us count the ways. A few years ago, the first mammoth genome was sequenced from remains acquired off eBay
You can get some today from as little as a tenner
The genome sequence allowed scientists to piece together some aspects of the lives and the biology of these magnificent beasts
as indeed we have for many animals – including humans – that are long dead
gifting us insights into the adaptations that helped mammoths evolve to suit their environments
What the ancient genome of the sadly departed does not allow us to do is bring them back
whose actual complete genome was taken from a living sheep
This is not photocopying – it’s trying to assemble a book with only a clutch of sentences
Colossal knows this and is proposing to modify the genes of an Asian elephant so they are more like mammoth genes. The proposed resulting creature would be a mixture of elephant and mammoth. These two elephantids parted ways on their evolutionary trees roughly 6m years ago
That was at about the same time we separated from what ended up as chimpanzees
That’s how different they are; that’s the equivalent hybrid being proposed
Cast your moral distaste over that particular monster aside and just consider that we don’t know the gestation period for a mammoth
We don’t know how big a mammoth neonate would be
We don’t know if a mammoth could digest Asian elephant milk
We would be performing artificial insemination and experimental IVF on an elephant that I am guessing did not give informed consent for this procedure
Should Colossal manage to overcome all of these apparently insurmountable scientific barriers
it will have an Asian elephant mother giving birth to a different species into a social group with which it has no affiliation in an environment it has not evolved to be part of because it ceased to exist many millennia ago
Read moreThe absurd and frankly ghoulish claims about the mammoth’s resurrection amount to a textbook case of science miscommunication and hubris. At a time when US scientists are under attack from their own government
the illiteracy around these elephantine fantasies is not just vexing but dangerous
The Trump administration’s threatened cuts span all scientific disciplines
but most pertinently to conservation and climate-crisis research
We are witnessing – and party to – the greatest biodiversity and species loss in human history
Perhaps focusing our efforts on preserving the millions of threatened creatures that actually exist should be the priority in these hostile times
The only way you will ever see a living mammoth is if our physicist friends finally crack time travel
but my understanding is that this remains very much in the realm of fiction
Perhaps in the meantime we could direct our scientific excitement and energies towards real problems
rather than on this mammoth circus of macabre fantasy and moral bankruptcy
Dr Adam Rutherford is a lecturer in genetics at UCL and the author of How to Argue With a Racist
Colossal is proposing to modify the genes of an Asian elephant
An earlier version said the species was an African elephant
VANCOUVER — It was an announcement Jim Rutherford never wanted to make
Vancouver’s president of hockey operations stepped up to the podium at Rogers Arena on Tuesday afternoon and delivered the news already circulating throughout the city: Rick Tocchet wouldn’t be returning as Canucks head coach
Rutherford got a call from Tocchet’s agent on Tuesday morning informing him of the decision
Tocchet personally called Rutherford and explained the decision in further detail
the conversations he had with Tocchet over the last few weeks were forward-looking and gave the impression he would be back next season
Rutherford explained that Tocchet was talking about his plans for checking in on players in the summer (including a trip to Sweden to visit Elias Pettersson)
what he wanted to do differently during next fall’s training camp and other topics that suggested he was still bought in on the idea of returning to coach the Canucks
It was only recently that Rutherford started feeling uneasy about Tocchet’s future
“It did get to a point probably a week ago where I started thinking
but we don’t have the commitment yet,’” said Rutherford
“I wasn’t sure why because (of) how positive everything was going
but with him and I being friends for as long as we have
we talked about some of the things he’s dealing with and he just said ‘For personal reasons
I will have a very tough time doing the job I need to do.’”
Rutherford wasn’t able to go into too much detail on why exactly Tocchet felt the need to move on
Don’t expect this to be an extended coaching search that drags on
Rutherford noted that they would be careful not to rush but that there are strong incentives for them to identify their next coach sooner rather than later
The biggest reason for that is that the organization wants its head coach to be involved in offseason roster planning
“It’s important for the coach to get input on the players he wants
not for the general manager to just make trades and say
you make the adjustments,’” said Rutherford
With seven other head coaching vacancies in the NHL — Anaheim
Seattle and the New York Rangers — many teams have already begun their searches
The Canucks are a bit behind now relative to those other teams
They can’t afford to drag their feet because some candidates may get poached quickly while others will be fielding multiple offers
The last thing Vancouver would want is to take a long time deliberating on an ideal target
only for that coach to get scooped up by another club first
“We’ll start to do a shortlist,” said Rutherford
“I would expect our phones will ring on a regular basis for people that want this job
We’ll narrow it down fairly quick and start the process from there.”
Mike Sullivan would have probably been the dream hire for Rutherford and the Canucks
Sullivan’s illustrious track record speaks for itself
“I know my good friend Mike Sullivan does not want to leave the East,” said Rutherford
Manny Malhotra has already become a popular name among Canucks fans as a potential head coaching replacement
both developing some of the younger players who were called up and impressed down the stretch in the NHL and garnering team success despite his roster being short-handed at times due to Vancouver’s injury woes
Rutherford confirmed that Malhotra will be on the club’s shortlist of candidates
based not only on his work in Abbotsford but on the seven years of experience he has in the NHL as an assistant coach
Malhotra doesn’t have NHL head coaching experience
and this season was his first as a head coach at any pro level
Some teams are wary of hiring less experienced names
Rutherford was asked how much previous NHL head coaching experience matters for the Canucks’ next hire
He said that he needs time to fully ponder the experience angle but sounded open-minded around the possibility of a first-time NHL head coach
“I will say that there are coaches presently in the league that were not head coaches in the NHL (previously) that are doing a good job with some teams,” said Rutherford
My quick thought for part of your question is (that the coaching hire doesn’t) necessarily have to have NHL (head coaching) experience … it’s not just coaching in the NHL; what experience do people have as leaders on teams when they played
It’s fascinating that Rutherford will weigh the experience potential head coaching candidates had as leaders when they were players
That certainly works in Malhotra’s favour — he was a critical leader when he played for the Canucks
and there are others in the organization who can vouch for that
What will the Canucks be looking for with their next head coach
He noted that he wants the Canucks to have a reliable defensive structure to fall back on when they aren’t performing at their best
That defensive structure is what he felt they lacked under Bruce Boudreau and what he credited Tocchet with implementing
don’t expect the Canucks to chase a head coach who will encourage a freewheeling offensive style
Defence-first will likely still be the top priority
low-event playing style may not be the most exciting or aesthetically pleasing product for fans
but it’s probably the sensible call given the Canucks’ current personnel
Vancouver’s blue line and goaltending tandem should be a strength
while the forward group lacks elite offensive drivers
It behooves the club to stick to a structured style that’s similar to what Tocchet implemented
On a couple of different occasions in the news conference
Rutherford suggested that the next coach will also need to understand how to deal with and maximize Pettersson’s potential
“It’s about getting the top players — and when I say that
we don’t worry about him — but getting the top players to perform the way they have to,” said Rutherford
“You have to have your impact players win games for you
That’s part of the job of the coach and that’s something that the new coach is going to have to figure out.”
Keeping Quinn Hughes beyond the two years left on his current contract looms over every key change that affects the Canucks
It’s no secret that Hughes wanted Tocchet back
“I hope he’s playing golf because he usually returns my call right away,” Rutherford said
“I called him within half an hour after I talked to Rick
Knowing how he feels about the coach and that he’s a sensitive guy
Management needs to ensure that Hughes is pleased with the next head coaching hire
You can bet that they’ll likely get his input on Malhotra
Malhotra was an assistant under Travis Green during Hughes’ rookie season in 2019-20
Hughes will have at least some firsthand experience with Malhotra and will be able to share his thoughts on the latter’s potential suitability for the head coaching gig
Rutherford provided some additional commentary on why the club is digging its heels in on these bonuses
we have (an ELC) structure for our draft picks,” said Rutherford
You can’t be all over the map and be helter-skelter when you’re doing these contracts.”
It’s unusual for a club to be this stubborn around ELC bonuses with a top prospect
but the Canucks seem to believe that Willander will eventually cave
They’ve repeatedly pointed out that turning pro next season would make him a lot of money compared to returning to college
It would also help him accrue a full year of NHL service immediately
which would help him eventually reach unrestricted free agency sooner
“What I laid out (the money and accruing NHL service time)
it just wouldn’t make any sense for a player to make that decision (to not sign an ELC),” said Rutherford
“Émilie (Castonguay) still continues to work on a regular basis on the contract and we hope to get it done sooner or later.”
It seems risky for the Canucks to hardball their top prospect over a mostly insignificant amount of money
Why complicate the situation and/or risk starting a relationship with such a high-profile prospect on a sour note

All articles from our websiteThe digital version of Today's PaperBreaking news alerts direct to your inboxAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueNot only is it delaying emergency response time
it's putting a huge strain on paramedics with fatigue and burnout reaching crisis levels
Intensive care specialist paramedic Dakota Kalandis
who is the Health Services Union representative at Rutherford Ambulance Station
said the HSU is calling for a tax payer funded roster system to fix the issue
This would mean rosters would be made based on what the individual station requires
rather than what the Hunter zone as a whole requires which is what is currently done
rosters are made on a PAR (planned ambulance rosters) system which means ambulances are shared over Hunter zones one and two
which covers from Murrurundi and Merriwa to Buladelah and Belmont
Ms Kalandis said the PAR system doesn't work for regional areas
"The PAR model means that these ambulances are shared over the sector
if any station has extra staff they will get sent to fill unstaffed stations before any overtime will be called in," she said
"For metro areas like Sydney it is a more plausible model within a sector
however the vast geographical distance in our sector makes this ineffective and dangerous to the community
as areas are uncovered whilst waiting for staff movements."
Intensive care specialist paramedic Dakota Kalandis treating a patient who was hit by a car
Picture suppliedMs Kalandis said Maitland has been funded for a second ambulance 24 hours every day for almost a year
which was fought for and won by Rutherford paramedics and the Maitland community in 2024
Due to the amount of high acuity cases Rutherford was also upgraded to the highest category station (category A)
meaning the second ambulance is an Intensive Care Ambulance
specially staffed and equipped for advanced medical care
But she said as the ICPs haven't been added to the PAR system
Poor working conditions has meant staff have left and the full roster of 12 ICPs is down to just six
leaving the remaining paramedics working overtime and through breaks
Member for Maitland Jenny Aitchison said the government is committed to supporting paramedics
"I meet regularly with the Health Services Union and local paramedics to discuss a range of issues," she said
"I have reached out to the HSU to meet on this specific issue
I have also sought advice from the Minister's office regarding the situation in Rutherford specifically."
An intensive care ambulance at Rutherford Ambulance Station
Picture suppliedMs Aitchison said the Labor government has invested in a record pay increase for paramedics
has employed more paramedics than ever before
and is boosting the regional workforce by rolling out 500 additional paramedics
NSW Ambulance commenced a nine-week trial in the Western Sydney Zone to assess the feasibility of establishing on-duty relief paramedic positions
which are specifically recruited and rostered to this role within a zone," she said
"The aim of this trial is to have dedicated on-duty relief paramedics rostered on and reduce the need for other paramedics to move to another station during a shift to cover short term leave
and I look forward to the results of this trial."
she was getting ready to work the one ambulance rostered on overnight at Rutherford
she has missed 97 of her 112 allocated work breaks and she has had an average of at least one hour of overtime every shift
bringing her shifts up from 12 hours and 15 minutes to 13 hours and 15 minutes
and for 46 of her last 56 shifts she hasn't been able to leave work on time
Ms Kalandis said most paramedics working under a PAR model experience similar conditions
She said a tax payer funded roster will increase ambulance coverage for the community
and have a flow on effect for paramedics' welfare and morale so they can take breaks
get home on time and avoid unnecessary overtime
"When I have completed my shifts this roster
50 per cent of the time the ICP ambulance has been unstaffed and has sat empty on the station until my return for my following shift 12 hours later," Ms Kalandis said
ICPs specialise in the management of trauma
and other life-threatening presentations and have a higher level of training than primary care paramedics
HSU secretary Gerard Hayes said the current system is seeing funded positions going unfilled
"NSW Ambulance has been allocated $1.76 billion to put on hundreds more paramedics," he said
"Our communities needed these medical professionals
They are not a luxury add-on that don't need to be replaced."
which tore through a large mechanical workshop at Rutherford overnight
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews were called to the scene
East Maitland and Rutherford stations discovered the flames had spread through the reception area of the business
The firefighters forced their way inside and attacked the inferno
Their stoic efforts limited the spread of the blaze to nearby businesses as well
They also doused several spot fires and used positive pressure fans to disperse smoke from the locale
The firefighters have now handed control of the site to NSW Police amid suspicions about the cause of the fire
FRNSW investigators are liaising with officers as investigations continue
An FRNSW Liquid Ignition Detection dog was scheduled to arrive on the scene

Sherfane Rutherford again watched from the sidelines as Gujarat Titans cruised to a 38-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a high-scoring Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Friday
was omitted from the playing XI for the second straight game
having last featured against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 21
Despite flashes of form when given a chance
Rutherford remains in and out of a team stacked with batting firepower
a fact only underscored by the Titans’ latest performance
Scores: Gujarat Titans 224-6 (20 overs); Sunriser Hyderabad 186-6 (20 overs)
Gujarat unleashed a top-order blitz to post their second highest score of the season
thanks to half-centuries from Shubman Gill (76 off 38 balls)
The trio's form now sees them sitting first
as he steadied the ship after Sudharsan’s dismissal and powered the Titans past the 220 mark
His knock came at a point when Sunrisers had briefly tightened the screws
who had three fours and four towering sixes
Jaydev Unadkat (3-35) was the pick of the Sunrisers pack
with Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head attacking from the outset
particularly Prasidh Krishna (2-19) and Mohammed Siraj (2-33)
Krishna removed Head (20) with help from Rashid Khan, who took a breathtaking diving catch after running 32 meters from the boundary. From there, wickets began to tumble, including Abhishek Sharma, who topscored with a 41-ball 74 including four fours and six sixes, and the required run rate spiraled out of reach
The win propelled Gujarat Titans to second place on the table
tied on 14 points with leaders Mumbai Indians and third-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore
separated only by net run rate as the playoff race tightens

and at the very least mow a perimeter so the snakes are less likely to cross the road to the houses
They said in the past when council has mowed
Maitland City Council director city services Jason Linnane said the council is aware snakes have been spotted around the street
"Council mows and maintains a 20-metre buffer zone in this area every six weeks and that six-week service is due this week," he said
it is not possible to clear the entire area due to the land condition and the presence of monitoring equipment
and council does not remove them from areas of natural habitat on public land."
Picture by Chloe ColemanDarby Lane resident Jimmy Walmsley said he has been calling the council about it and mowing a perimeter around his property the entire three years he has lived there
"I constantly ring Maitland council and put in complaints
I call them probably every three weeks and ask them to mow and they just don't do it or they close jobs," he said
Mr Walmsley has racked up steep vet bills from taking his dogs to the vet after seeing them near a snake in the yard
"We don't let ours outside anymore because we've already had a few scares of them getting bitten
and every time you think they've been bitten it costs you thousands," he said
"To get the anti-venom is a thousand dollars straight off the bat."
The Aaron Cove residents have also had to pay for private snake removals
and they said one of their neighbours has had two animals die from snake bites
Resident Chris Hopley said "what's it going to take for them to take it seriously?"
do we have to lose a child?," Ms Lawler added
Maitland council said information, including what to do and who to contact in the event of a snake sighting, is on their website
Portrait of RUTHERFORD CHANG with his White Album collection at the exhibition "We Buy White Albums" at Recess Gallery
conceptual artist and collector Rutherford Chang
who was known for his eccentric collection of mass-produced cultural artifacts, passed away at his home in Manhattan
Chang grew up in California and later moved to New York
dividing his time between there and Shanghai
he made his first purchase of the Beatles’ White Album on vinyl at a garage sale for USD 1
What ensued was a playful obsession—at the time of his passing
Chang had amassed a collection of 3,417 original pressings of the White Album
He was drawn to older copies for their unique character and the imagined histories they held through marks from previous owners—mold
or graffiti—and the way each sounded slightly different due to dust or scratches on the discs
He religiously listened to the album daily
and shared his evergrowing collection via Instagram @webuywhitealbums.
Chang collected 10,000 copper pennies dated before 1982
After recording images of each penny on a blockchain
a commentary on the layers of value ascribed to traditional currency
and an eternal preservation of a coin which will ultimately be terminated
while a three-dimensional model was auctioned by Christie’s last year as a digital asset for USD 50,400
Chang’s collection and works have been exhibited globally at venues including White Space in Beijing

Vancouver Canucks President Jim Rutherford spoke to the media on Tuesday afternoon following the announcement that Rick Tocchet will not be returning as head coach of the Vancouver Canucks
Rutherford began the media availability with an opening statement on Tocchet’s decision not to return to the team
Rick Tocchet has decided not to return as the coach of the Vancouver Canucks
We had a lot of talks over the last four to six weeks
it was sort of general talks like we would normally have it at the end of each year
and he’s talking about what he’s going to do with the players in the summertime
what he wants to do with the team next year
and it appeared to me that he would return,” said Rutherford
He went on to say that over the past few days
they were going to have to come to a decision as to what the future is so that the Canucks can take the next step
Rutherford said that Tocchet wanted to move to the Eastern part of the United States and be closer to his family
“We thank him greatly for the job he did here
He’s been a friend of mine for a long time
Rutherford mentioned that he and General Manager Patrik Allvin will form a short list of candidates
and we’ll narrow it down fairly quick and then start the process from there,” said Rutherford
Rutherford then addressed how the team was constructed to play in a style that fit Tocchet’s structure and whether the personnel they were looking for would be different with a new head coach
“We were going to have to make changes anyway
and we knew we were going to certainly make some changes with our forwards
we know who the coach is so that the coach can have input on that,” said Rutherford
He went on to say that it is important for the coach to get the players they want
and it’s not just about management picking the players they want
Though the team won’t rush into hiring a new head coach
Rutherford wants to get the process started
as it will help them accomplish their offseason tasks
“We really don’t want to do this in a manner that we do it too quick and we make the wrong decision on a coach
We want to make sure that we go through the proper process
the better it is for the planning for the offseason,” Rutherford said
Rutherford then spoke about the remaining coaching staff members
and they will be guys that we will want to keep
he may want to bring one or two of his own guys,” said Rutherford
we’re going to have to tread lightly here for a little bit
even though those guys are going to want to know
we’ll just have to see how that plays out.”
Rutherford mentioned that Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra is on the short list
He also noted that the team is not necessarily looking for someone with a lot of NHL coaching experience
but rather for the experience candidates have as leaders
And then we’re going to have to interview these people and see where they’re coming from,” said Rutherford
“We have a situation here where we have some star players
the coach has to be able to adjust to how you deal with them compared to the rest of the roster.”
He also mentioned that free-agent coach Mike Sullivan does not want to leave the East due to family reasons
Rutherford did not want to take Peter Laviolette off the short list
but said Patrik Allvin was not as familiar with Laviolette as he is
When asked about why a coach might want to come to Vancouver
Rutherford spoke about the team’s strength in net and on the defence
He also mentioned that they need to make their forward group better and have more balance up front
and his goal remains to bring a championship to the city of Vancouver
and I don’t feel comfortable with the job that I’ve done,” said Rutherford
and we have a lot of work to do to get back on track
Tocchet released a statement to Canucks fans through Canucks Communications on Tuesday afternoon
“To the Canucks fans - your infectious spirit
loyal commitment and will to win kept me and the entire team on our toes
I appreciate how you have made yourselves a driving force in the Canucks community,” said Tocchet
was asked how nervous he was facing the Winnipeg Jets in his first NHL playoff series
“Do I look nervous?” Binnington famously asked
He further answered the question with his performance
a playoff run that began in Winnipeg and ended in Boston with the franchise’s first Stanley Cup
how locked in he was,” Blues defenseman Colton Parayko said
“He instills confidence in your team,” Blues captain Brayden Schenn said
So when the Blues beat the Jets 5-2 in Game 6 of their Western Conference playoff series Friday night
the attention immediately turned to Binnington
How much confidence do teammates have in the author of 23 postseason wins
“He’s just locked in,” Blues forward Nathan Walker said
They show up and know Binnington will be ready to make the saves that will give them a chance to win the game
it’ll be a chance for the Blues to upset the Jets in their first-round series when the teams meet in Game 7 at 6 p.m
Blues coach Jim Montgomery will be in the fourth Game 7 of his NHL coaching career and understands the advantage of having Binnington as his goalie in a game of this magnitude
“Two words that come to mind right away is how calm he is and ‘proven winner,'” Montgomery said
he knows how to not only get himself in the right zone but also how to give confidence to his team in front of him
“It’s the confidence and swagger that he gives the rest of us
you can almost feel the body language is ‘I got it
I got the rest.’ That’s the way he makes us feel.”
His first during the 2019 playoffs was a 2-1 victory in double overtime over the Dallas Stars
who were coached by Montgomery at the time
came in a 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Final
he has turned aside 61 of 63 shots for an astounding .968 save percentage
That’s why there’s no other goalie that Schenn would rather have going into Sunday’s game than his longtime teammate
“I can say that fully with what he did in 2019
But that’s not the only large stage on which Binnington has thrived
the 31-year-old helped carry Team Canada to a 3-2 overtime win over the U.S.
making 31 of 33 saves in the gold medal game
His glove save on the Americans’ Brady Tkachuk was a showstopper
as well as the rest of Binnington’s Blues teammates
“His ability to rise in big moments is always what describes him best,” Montgomery said
If you combine Binnington’s save totals in his two Game 7s and the gold medal game
he’s made 92 of 96 stops for a 1.18 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage
“His track record speaks for itself,” Blues defenseman Cam Fowler said
“He was unbelievable when they won the Cup here
and you saw what he could do in the 4 Nations tournament
He’s a huge reason why we are where we are
and we’ll continue to lean on him because he’s shown everybody time and time again that he’s world class.”
Now Binnington finds himself in another high-stakes Game 7 matchup against Winnipeg
he’ll be head-to-head against the Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck
Binnington has had the upper hand in the series
He’s 3-3 with a 2.54 goals-against average and an .897 save percentage
He’s stopped 26 of 34 high-danger shots (.765 save percentage)
and they’ve included some highlight-reel material
such as his back-to-back saves on the Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers in Game 6
this guy is un-bleeping-believable pic.twitter.com/DdXrkg5O1l
— St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) May 3, 2025
whether you’re a player or goalie,” Schenn said
As Binnington has also done throughout his career
he’s given the Blues an advantage with his elite puck-handling skills
His ability to stop the puck behind his own net negates the opposition’s forecheck and helps the Blues advance the puck up ice for clean breakouts and quicker transitions
“It makes it a lot easier for us D-men when he gets those pucks and moves them quick and simple,” Parayko said
“It allows you to play an aggressive style
it makes you confident in being aggressive and making plays that you know you can make.”
it also saves some wear and tear on the Blues’ defensemen because they’re not being hit by the forechecking forwards as much
the Blues’ top-four defensemen have been on the receiving end of a combined 66 hits
including Josh Morrissey 28 times and all four in double digits
“He’s been unbelievable for us in the series and throughout the year,” Philip Broberg said
“He gives us a lot of confidence back there.”
And the Blues don’t expect Binnington will change in Game 7 on Sunday
despite another night in which every move will be under a microscope — much like in 2019 when Winnipeg’s “White Out” crowd chanted: “You look nervous!”
I find some embrace it and some don’t,” Schenn said
Whether they’re chanting about my brother and me
and you’re going to look back and enjoy those pressure-packed situations.”

McCullough looks at the challenges and opportunities facing CFOs.Follow AuthorDec 18
03:45am ESTShareSaveCommentChristy Rutherford is a recognized leadership expert who has published eight books
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Christy Rutherford
a recognized expert in negotiations and leadership development
Christy has helped leaders across industries secure millions in salary increases
and transform their professional trajectories
we explored a range of topics that are top-of-mind for CFOs—everything from negotiating compensation to fostering self-care and building trust in high-stakes scenarios
Whether you’re looking to advocate for yourself or your organization
Christy’s insights offer actionable strategies that every CFO can use to lead with confidence and clarity
Many CFOs are seasoned negotiators for their companies but may struggle when it comes to negotiating for themselves
What key steps should CFOs take when negotiating their salary or promotion
It's common for leaders to advocate for everybody else
but when it comes time to advocate for themselves
and look at the value you've added to the organization
your unconscious perspective of self shows up
and the negative voice kicks in and says that you're not good enough
Uncertainty in how your leaders and team perceive you also creates self-imposed barriers to claiming your full value
Lesson - Start quantifying the professional things you've done and advocate for yourself just as fiercely and confidently as you advocate for the people around you
You often emphasize the importance of self-care in achieving professional success
who are typically working high-pressure jobs
Self-care is a learned skill for leaders and high achievers
and CEOs are resigning and leaving their jobs at record rates because they haven't learned how to take care of themselves adequately
I’ve recommended three things to my clients worldwide
and it’s resulted in $20 million in salary raises and small business revenue
These habits have also saved 30 marriages and alleviated stress-related medical conditions
significantly improve your mental and physical health
You will also be more productive and effective at work
The number one habit is to meditate for five minutes three times a week
Listen to guided meditation for five minutes
where a calming voice tells you to come into your body
You can do this when you're getting out of the shower
Some of my clients hide in the closet or meditate in their cars before they go into the office or before they walk into the house after work
Taking a moment to decompress before walking into chaos is a conscious decision to prioritize your health
working out for 30 minutes three times a week
and give you the patience to manage multiple fires at work
get eight hours of sleep three times a week
While all of these are free and easy to do
it’s not so easy to get high achievers to believe they can incorporate self-care into their routines
make when they approach salary negotiations
The first common mistake I see is when people say
“What are you going to give me?” or they don't have a target in mind when they are looking for an increase in salary
“What are you going to give me?” You're leaving it up to someone else to determine your value
and you’re likely going to be disappointed
If you want a 30% increase in your base pay or an overall increase of $20k or $200k
How can CFOs use market data and their unique value propositions to negotiate higher compensation packages successfully
I've seen data with a gap of $200k in the same geographic area and job title
that may be a marker if someone is underpaid but being able to understand and clearly articulate your unique selling proposition is the Master Key
Your Unique Selling Proposition will get you a higher wage because you’re talking about yourself
and the value you bring to the organization
I recommend that you quantify three significant achievements you’ve had with the company in the past 12 – 18 months
They should center around how much revenue you’ve generated for the company
or how much time you have saved the company
Have you reduced turnover or done something exceptional that hasn’t been done before
Can you quantify if you've added $2 million to the bottom line or if you've recouped $5 million of uncaptured revenue
You’ve provided tremendous value to the organization
and you should be able to capitalize on that
One of my clients created a program that saved an organization 5000 manager hours
When he learned how to quantify his contributions
he got a promotion and a $90,000 salary raise in the first nine months at his new job
After you’ve quantified three achievements
then ask for three things you want in return for it
I want a more flexible schedule or to take a finance course at Harvard Business School
Ask for three things that are important to you at this juncture in your career and personal life
what role does confidence play in successful salary negotiations
and how can CFOs cultivate and project that confidence when advocating for themselves
Advocating for yourself is a learned skill for leaders
Leaders are conditioned to include the team and say “we,” not I
so confidence plays a significant role because if you don't believe you deserve it
Some leaders will play on your fear if you're nervous or unsure
But the fear is rooted in not understanding the value you’ve created for the organization
Write down 20 things you’ve done in the past 18 - 24 months
but it’s imperative to be able to take credit for your work
you’re working harder to prove that you have value
but you’ve repeatedly demonstrated that value for years on end
but you haven’t claimed it or quantified it
When you take the time to look at what you've done and celebrate it
that's how you cultivate and project confidence
Confidence isn’t something that can be fabricated when you’re negotiating
especially with a seasoned negotiator and senior leader
You have to really BELIEVE and own how great you already are
you'll be able to confidently ask for what you deserve
You’ve spoken about the need to set higher salary goals—often 30% or more
How should CFOs determine what’s an ambitious yet realistic goal when negotiating their compensation
This goes back to your unique value proposition
If you’ve been overworked and underpaid for the past five years
then your current salary shouldn’t be the starting point for your value
If a Hermes bag can double its value in five years
Someone who has dedicated their time and energy to solving problems
and providing tremendous value for the company
Depending on the organization and the known budget for certain roles
and this goes back to understanding and articulating your unique selling proposition
Asking for a raise also allows you to see how your organization really feels about you
They can string you along and not pay you if you never verbally articulate the desire for an increase and a specific number
you're giving the organization the opportunity to express how they view you and your potential for upward mobility in the company
Don't get mad if you find the expectations misaligned; just be informed
If they don't give you what you asked for or anything
then it's okay to start seeking other opportunities because organizations will value how you value yourself
One of my clients recently got a $140,000 raise while thousands of people were being laid off
She saw a problem that she could solve for the organization and wrote a job description outlining how she was uniquely qualified to provide more value while not working as hard
so we first had to get her to implement the three self-care habits
along with a few other things like outsourcing cleaning
she had more room to mentally see how she could be more effective at work and use her unique skillset to solve a problem that needed to be addressed
She didn’t have to work harder to earn more money
and when she presented the idea to her leaders
they quickly agreed and gave her what she asked for
When CFOs negotiate on behalf of their companies
whether it's in M&A or with vendors
what are the key differences in approach from negotiating for their personal benefit
The most significant difference between negotiating on behalf of their companies and negotiating for their benefit is
looking in the mirror and being able to self-advocate
It is always easier to share your experience and expertise as a professional representative of your company
then a deficiency in your “personal growth” has been highlighted
and energy for professional development to achieve a certain level of success
You have all the certifications and degrees and a library of leadership books to strengthen your professional persona
but that came at the sacrifice of personal development
Personal development is how you really feel about yourself
and that is clearly expressed during the conversations you have with yourself at two o'clock in the morning
Thinking that you could have done some things differently
or handled a tense situation better with a colleague
Personal development will close the gap between your personal and professional self
That's the equation to solve because the gap in how you see yourself is where you will be exploited during negotiations
What negotiation techniques from executive-level salary discussions can CFOs apply when leading company-wide negotiations
It's similar to the insight offered earlier
This is who I am (three short bullet points to highlight your credentials/experience)
this is what I've done (three short bullet points to highlight your top performance)
and the three things that you're going to require for that
The same applies to company-wide negotiations
Clearly articulate the top results the company has gotten for its vendors or whoever it's negotiating with
the three benefits they have for working with the company
and the three things they desire in return
You have extensive experience in leadership development and organizational behavior
How can CFOs build a culture of transparency and trust in negotiations
Building a culture of transparency and trust in internal and external negotiations is really about having tough conversations
The promotion conversation should not occur once a year
It should be an ongoing conversation where no one is surprised
Your leadership team should know your short-term and long-term goals for the organization
you build trust by having conversations about money and telling people where they fit in the organization and what they need to do to get a raise
These conversations are difficult for leaders
but they are imperative if you want to inspire trust and loyalty in your team
Set up regular meetings with your leaders and direct reports so the conversation flows up and down and doesn’t get bottlenecked
Schedule a quarterly meeting with your leader and say
“How can I assist you with your goals for this quarter
you share your goals for the quarter and ask
“Are these goals aligned with where you need me to be and best serve the organization?”
“What goals do you have for me this quarter?” Tell them if a salary increase or some benefit is expected
“I’d like to add 15% or 30% to my base pay
What do I need to do to achieve that?” This conversation should occur at the start of each quarter
“These are the priorities you had for me for the quarter.” “Did I meet the expectation
ask the questions listed earlier for the beginning of the quarter
Ask the questions upfront so you're not being elusive or expecting something to happen that has never been expressed
You’re also putting them on notice that there is an expectation of an increase within a given time frame
you'll be able to see whether it's possible for you in the organization
and if it’s not possible within the timeframe you desire
It's essential to have transparent conversations about your expectations
neither party should be surprised because it’s a quarterly conversation
Transparency and trust are created through tactical and planned processes where everyone is on the same page
and transparency is having the conversation about what the expectations are and what you're going to get
How should CFOs handle negotiations when they are representing multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests
such as balancing the needs of shareholders
I took three negotiation classes at the Harvard Business School
and the last one was called Changing the Game: Negotiation and Competitive Decision-Making
This was my favorite negotiation course because in the first two if there was $1 million worth of value to be captured if I got $400k and the other person got $250k
you’d have to find the win-win and maximize the deal's total value
I would have lost because the total value captured between me and the other person was $650k
which means we left $350k of value uncaptured
The conversations require a lot more work and maturity to maximize the total deal and get as close as possible to the $1 million marker in value
We had to get creative in offering other incentives that were important to the other person if we wanted to get more money in the deal
it’s important to understand the conflicting interests and desires of the shareholders
and customers and have an open and honest conversation about what's possible and what's not possible
Understand that some feelings may get hurt
But if people know that you’ve considered their wants and needs and get a clear sense of what's possible and not possible based on the needs of others
it’s more palatable to have a 70% win if they understood that no one got 100%
they may be just as happy losing a little bit so everybody can win
What advice do you have for CFOs who are looking to secure promotions or career advancements while also ensuring they don't fall into the trap of overworking themselves
Leaders are overworking themselves to prove they are valuable to the organization
but they aren’t capturing the value by asking
You don't have to work harder to get more money or to prove that you’re valuable at this point in your career
It's about working smarter and taking care of yourself
you're not mentally capable of making great decisions all the time
and work out allows you to have a clear head and make great decisions the first time
It also gives you the clarity of thought and the clarity of mind to handle challenging situations and workplace conflicts with ease
and while telling high achievers to get some sleep doesn’t garner wide praise
I burned out and resigned from my career with three and a half years left to retire with a full pension because I did not follow these self-care tips
so the compound effect of eating cheesy/greasy foods
and drinking several cups of coffee before 10 am took a toll mentally and physically
While my team and I produced award-winning results
and mentored my six direct reports every night for up to three hours
they are in positions in the organization reserved for elite performers
but my catastrophic burnout was 100% preventable
It took me two years to recover physically
I know FOR SURE that I could have been healthier
and more effective if I had put just as much care into myself as I did to everyone around me
Leadership is one of the greatest gifts a person can offer humanity
and rarely prioritize our mental and physical health
Working harder to get promoted is just like throwing more wood on a forest fire that's already out of control
Another piece of wood is not going to move the needle forward
If you want to stand out in an interview panel
In As a Man Thinketh (written in the early 1900’s)
He is like a shade-giving tree in a thirsty land or a sheltering rock in a storm
When my clients ask for a promotion or interview for new roles
and people roll out the red carpet to offer them anything that they want
A leader who intentionally learns self-care will write their own ticket for anything that they want
You’ve mentioned the importance of having mentors and sponsors
How can CFOs develop a “Personal Board of Advisors,” and why is it critical for their professional development and negotiation success
If leaders want to increase their earning potential and negotiate more effectively
I had 13 mentors and 20 or so sponsors in my previous career
A mentor is someone who's been where you want to go
I recommend getting mentors two levels above where you are because they’ve been there and can offer insight on how to solve your challenges and give you a different perspective quickly
Leaders don’t always communicate in detail
so many problems could be quickly resolved if you had someone to decipher challenging scenarios with
so they can tell you about the different minefields and the traps of leadership and things that don't
If you can’t find a mentor in your organization
seek someone in your industry by attending professional meetings and joining an association like the Chief Financial Officer’s Leadership Council
You need to have a personal relationship with a sponsor because they are putting their reputation on the line when they mention your name
A sponsor will put your name in the hat when it comes to discussing roles and opening doors for you
You may not always know someone is sponsoring you
but it will usually be someone with whom a relationship has been cultivated
harmonious relationships with people who have input into your career and how it will go
If you don't have direct access to a sponsor
then look for the promotability decision makers in your organization and build relationships with their friends and trusted colleagues
Look for a bridge or an olive branch to get an introduction to a potential sponsor and decision-makers in your organization
Mentors and sponsors have your best interests in your professional achievements
but leaders need someone who will hold you accountable for the personal goals you set for yourself
Someone who will assist you with making your personal life a priority and keep you aligned personally so as you continue to ascend the ladder of success
A personal board of advisors is necessary in every aspect of your career
and if you don't have these people in your life
I urge you to get them as soon as possible

Rick Tocchet left the Vancouver Canucks this off-season
Jim Rutherford has opened up on the process
revealing why the two sides couldn't make a deal
many believed that the Vancouver Canucks had what it took to push for a deep Stanley Cup run this past season
it turned out to be one of the most disappointing years in franchise history
the team have parted ways with Head Coach Rick Tocchet
who reportedly turned down a deal worth $25 million over five years
a decision that changes the direction of the Canucks franchise
President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford has opened up on the process of talking to Tocchet about a potential extension
he revealed that it was Tocchet's desire to return to the East Coast and be closer to family that led to his decision
because every conversation Patrik Allvin and I had with him was about what took place during the season
What he'd like to do different in the off season
there was a period of time going through a negotiation
So he has some things going on that he's working through now
I believe he's sincere and saying that he wants to get back to the east
it's no surprise that Tocchet turned down Vancouver's offers
there's plenty of opportunities for him to remain as a Head Coach in the NHL while being closer to family
this will be a bitter pill to swallow for Canucks fans
as they moved on from Bruce Boudreau simply to bring Tocchet into the Head Coach role
they've got another huge decision to make soon
