As always in the British Superbikes, the drama starts long before the first round. In the final Oulton Park pre-season test Glenn Irwin set the quickest time on day 2 from Leon Haslam, Danny Kent and Kyle Ryde, but the off-track action was even more interesting. There have been some sweeping changes to the grid ahead of the first round to be held at the same circuit over May 3-5, headlined by 2024 champion Kyle Ryde being thrown a lifeline after the apparent collapse and resurrection of OMG Racing. World Superbike refugee Bradley Ray was set to partner Ryde, but will now compete for the reformed Raceways Yamah team and topped the final Oulton Park session. After operating his own team with BMW machinery the last two seasons, Haslam has made the switch to the Steve ‘Wilf’ Moore-led Moto Rapido Ducati squad at the expense of Christian Iddon. He posted strong times at Navarra and Donington. Glenn Irwin will return on the sole Paul Bird Motorsports Ducati V4 R and topped both the Navarra and Donington tests. 2023 champion Tommy Bridewell will return for Honda Racing UK after finishing runner-up to Ryde last season while McAMS Yamaha will also continue with Danny Kent. Aussie Billy McConnell and the Look Forward Racing / C&L Fairburn Properties team are back again for 2025 with Honda machinery, while Josh Brookes appears to have made a successful switch to the DAO Racing Honda, sitting inside the top 10 at all tests following an encouraging Australian Motul Summer Night Series. Josh Brookes appeared to have dodged a tricky situation at his former team FHO Racing BMW Motorrad, with team boss Faye Ho stepping back from the championship after previously confirming roads specialists Peter Hickman and Davey Todd. Ho stated she would be focusing her efforts on her native Macau and simply did not have the time to run a BSB team. This left Hickman and Todd to form 8Ten Racing, co-owned by both the riders and backed by BMW Motorrad UK. Reigning champ jobless, then back on the grid! I said and he shook his head in dismay "Maybe they'll have customers and they'll still be open,"I ventured as a guess "Let me out of the car!" I said to Mr NQN and he parked I dashed out of the car and by the time I was within metres of the bakery it was 5:34pm but there were 2 people at the counter there is a line," pointing towards the carpet bollards and line of half a dozen people who looked like they are waiting to get into a club About 10 minutes later they wave and I go up to the counter At 5:45pm on a Thursday there are quite a few fillings still available even now and the only one that isn't is the crispy pork (their signature one) The woman behind the counter is friendly and tells me that no matter what time it is if there's someone in the queue they will keep serving; even at 6pm when I leave that queue of half a dozen people is steadily replenished Some nights they have even served up until 7pm "For the full experience come on the weekend If you haven’t waited an hour then you’re not getting the full experience," she says laughing I later learn that her name is Him Yan and she and her husband Fenzhi Lin and nephew Kim Seng run Top Ryde Baker's House The couple have been in the food industry for 30 years and their first store was St Clair Bread They were then approached by the Top Ryde leasing manager to open a shop in the shopping centre and in 2010 they opened Top Ryde Baker's House Kim does their social media for them and explains "Food is truly important to my aunty because our family had gone through Pol Pot Khmer rouge regime She knows what it's like to starve and her appreciation of food comes from her past trauma We only want to be able to share our family flavours with everyone and hopefully bring them joy & happiness when they do eat our food Popularity is only given to us by our loving customers if it wasn't for our customers being patient with us in line and sharing the love of our food the way we also love it In October 2018 a tradie named Sam did the first viral post on pork roll appreciation page on facebook." And now there are always queues There's no skipping of the queue but there is one way around it with some pre-planning You can message them on Instagram after 6pm the night before if you want to order 10 or more banh mis and this is the only way to skip the queue And then you'll have 10 banh mi which is actually not a bad situation to be in (just saying!) Each banh mi is sliced and filled fresh to order and they take their time doing this the bread won't be as crisp as it is in the mornings When she has finished she shows me the tray with four fat We take these to a nearby dog park in Croydon and unwrap them Part of the reason for Top Ryde Baker's House's loyal patronage (some travel for an hour for their banh mis) is because each banh mi is stuffed full of filling All of the banh mis have the same salad and condiment mix (except the vegetarian one) i.e It's mainly the meat toppings that are different The BBQ pork and the crispy pork is one of their signature banh mis and it is good although I think diced charsiu with sauce would be even better and a bit more luscious You can also get extra meat or salad although I think you'd be hard pressed to fit any more into one of these sandwiches I had read that the meatballs were a bit firm not like those wonderfully soft melt in the mouth Vietnamese meatballs but the meatball banh mi suffers no such fate This is the sauciest one and perhaps why I like it so much The chilli spread is spicy and tingly but not overwhelming while the fresh salad is crunchy and it's wonderful against the soft What I really enjoy about these rolls is how different each one is The lemongrass beef is aromatic with lemongrass and tender beef strips Likewise the teriyaki chicken is sweet and salty with a sweet soy marinade This one is saucy too and goes so well with the salad I love the meatball roll followed by the chicken and then the beef and then the bbq pork (but realistically I'd happily devour any of them without a peep of complaint) A few weeks later I am headed back to Top Ryde for other reasons and I am determined to try the crispy pork banh mi The shop is lit up with around half a dozen people in the queue And what greets me when I reach the front is a sight to behold Three large pork shoulders with crispy skin sit under the heat lamps I can see the nubbled surface of the crackling and can almost hear the crunch already I lift the enormous crispy pork banh mi and wish that I had a scale so that I could tell you how heavy and laden it is This is the polar opposite of the banh mi you might get for breakfast in Vietnam that are lightly filled with pate This has heft and absolutely packed with cubes of bouncy pork Every second bite has that addictive crunch of crackling Next time I would double the crackling and chilli on this just to give it a bit more spice and just so I get that crunch on every bite Kim explains that the crispy pork banh mi took over 2 years to get right do you have a favourite banh mi that you always order The rapidly growing Ryde area is set to benefit from a huge new local multi-sports facility being delivered by the Minns Labor Government with construction now underway on the site The facility is being built on the former site of Marsden High School following the relocation of the school to the Meadowbank Education Precinct in 2022 Once complete the new facility will provide a range of community and sporting spaces with a focus on netball while also catering for growing sports such as basketball It will deliver a new 5,000 square metre indoor facility including 4 multipurpose courts and other indoor spaces as well as outdoor facilities including 29 netball courts with amenities These new courts will replace existing rundown netball courts located on top of an old rubbish tip at Meadowbank Park As the NSW Government delivers more housing for young people and families this project will also ensure that the community has access to world class sporting facilities and recreational spaces on their doorstep was initially promised by the former Liberal National government in 2018 but they failed to even begin construction on the project The facility will be delivered by the Minns Labor Government in 2026 This project is part of the Minns Labor Government's commitment to building a better NSW by providing the essential infrastructure growing communities deserve Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said: "This huge new facility that we're delivering will create much needed sports and recreational space for this rapidly growing community "With over 30 new outdoor and indoor courts to open space this will be a great community space that people can come and enjoy whether they play sport or not Now we're turning it into a world class sporting facility that everyone will be able to use." The unexpected collapse of OMG Racing, who Ryde won the 2024 BSB title with, left the reigning champion without a bike just weeks before the new season. But the involvement of Nitrous Competitions has brought OMG Racing back into the paddock, and allowed Ryde to compete. The season begins this weekend at Oulton Park. Ryde said: “I think testing has been good; Donington Park was really good, but that’s because I always seem to go well there, my bike does too and it’s my favourite track. “Donington was a positive test and it felt like I had a good chance of getting a trophy if we were to set off straight away. “Oulton Park was a bit more difficult and the complete opposite of Donington. We got used to the track again and bedded in four sets of new discs, which took time, but it was ideal really. “On the second day, we got going a bit faster. We need to find a bit more speed on one lap pace, but I’m just comparing myself to Bradley who did a 32.9 and we won’t be doing that speed in the race. “I felt really good on used tyres, pace wise for the race, it is just the qualifying part we need to work on a little bit. “But the be all and end all was I had not rode my bike since October last year when I won the championship before the Donington test, and I am just very lucky and very fortunate to be in this position. “I need to obviously thank Alan, Paul, and the team at Nitrous Competitions. I wouldn’t be here defending my 2024 British Championship without them. I am looking forward to Oulton Park this weekend and I can’t wait to see the number one again when I get there. “I want to enjoy having the number one plate and I will be doing my best to keep it until the end of 2026 for my team, friends, family and everyone who supports me.” © Crash Media Group Ltd 2025.The total or partial reproduction of text photographs or illustrations is not permitted of Ryde Council is continuing its fight to maintain TG Millner Fields as essential open space despite the site’s current owners resubmitting plans for a housing development The original development was determined to have a lack of strategic merit by the Ryde Local Planning Panel meeting (LPP) administered by the Department of Planning “The City of Ryde recognises the importance of housing in the current environment but strongly believes that housing can be provided throughout the Local Government Area (LGA) by striking the right balance between housing infrastructure and employment,” Council said in a statement “As the City of Ryde continues to evolve and essential community infrastructure becomes increasingly critical The proposed rezonings by the DPHI for the Macquarie Park Innovation Precinct Stage 1 and Stage 2 highlight a significant increase in residential density and the potential lack of adequate green spaces for the growing population.” The Council acknowledged these concerns and said it is taking proactive steps to secure land that could be transformed into much-needed open space for recreation and leisure It said there were very few opportunities remaining throughout the City of Ryde where quality and well-located open space to the scale required for active recreation can be set aside “Council has long recognised the need for more open space and recreational facilities particularly considering the projected residential growth in Macquarie Park expected to exceed an additional 30,000 people within the next 15 years.” The TG Millner site is currently zoned for private recreation and is well located in proximity to the Macquarie Park area The site is of a size and scale that allows for its ongoing use for active recreation The current proposal seeks to rezone the site at 146-150 Vimiera Road Marsfield from RE2 – Private Recreation to a combination of R2 – Low Density Residential and RE1 – Public Recreation it would pave the way for the construction of approximately 132 homes According to Councils 2021 Open Space Future Provision Strategy an additional 13 sporting fields were required to cater for an anticipated population growth to over 175,000 in 2036 Further demand for open space caused by the extra population to be delivered by the State Government’s Macquarie Park Innovation District (MPID) Stage 1 and Stage 2 rezoning proposals means that an extra six new competition sporting fields will now be required in addition to the 13 fields previously identified Ron Hoenig declined Council’s Proposed Acquisition Notice (PAN) for TG Millner despite a previous promise by the Department of Planning Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) to provide the necessary funding towards essential open space The Council has written to Minister Hoenig asking him to reconsider his decision and to provide details of the estimated funding required for the City of Ryde to acquire this essential open space Council has currently budgeted for and put forward an offer of $15 million to help fund the compulsory acquisition “Council has sought assistance from the Commonwealth and NSW Government for the compulsory acquisition of this valuable 6.2ha of regional playing fields in Marsfield as new government housing targets threaten to dramatically increase the population and density of nearby Macquarie Park and neighbouring suburbs,” it said Trenton Brown has written to the Federal Member of Bennelong Jerome Laxale on multiple occasions seeking a commitment to preserve TG Millner as essential open space to honour his past commitments when he was the Mayor of Ryde and help with funding the purchase of the site and Planning and Public Spaces to encourage them to provide the funding as promised by the DPHI as part of the MPID rezoning strategies and Transport Oriented Development (TOD) to the City of Ryde He said the provision of open space in the City of Ryde was a critical issue that needed to be urgently addressed by the State Government if it was to strike the right balance between its ambitious housing plans and the crucial local infrastructure required to support a booming population Information and Events for Local Councils throughout Australia Contact us: newsdesk@insidelocalgovernment.com.au An Aussie recruiter has warned job hunters not to waste their time applying for a government job because most of the roles will be filled internally Tammie Ballis, who was a government recruiter before she started her own business, found a customer service role advertised by the Ryde City Council in Sydney 'They're looking for a customer service officer. Nothing special, just your typical corporate customer service job,' Ms Ballis said in a TikTok video.  The ad said the right person needed previous experience working in local or state government or have an understanding of the services provided by local councils. 'What they're saying is "we only hire our own",' Ms Ballis said.  The recruiter told Daily Mail Australia that the job ad was 'a common thing' she saw in her line of work.  She claimed government agencies strive to hire internally to 'keep things slow'. 'You don't want someone from the private sector, with all their new ideas, to come in and change things… with a good work ethic to make you all look bad,' she said.  'In the private sector it's about making sales and money but when you're on the taxpayer dollar it's about taking your time.' Aussies were divided over the video, with some agreeing with Ms Ballis.  'It's not just Ryde that does it, almost everyone I've looked at applying for does too. Makes it not worth even sending in the application if I'm not going to be considered,' one person commented.  'I have tried for years to get into our local council. I've had two interviews. And you know what the feedback was? I was over-qualified for the jobs,' another said. But others said previous government experience was vital for the role. 'Private sector doesn't understand how we work. We do hire you sometimes - but government hires government for good reason,' one person said.  'It needs people who understand the system and the constraints of the system. We have to work to our constraints.' 'Coming from someone who works in local government, I can see why they've put this. Sometimes it's easier to train someone who already has the experience,' another wrote. Ms Ballis said most experienced workers would be wasting their time applying for the customer service role which offered a salary between $67,000 and $85,000.  'It's pretty much near zero chance that someone without government experience will get that job,' the recruiter said.  'It's really sad because everyone should be able to have a go. There's nothing special about having customer service experience.' Ryde City Council told Daily Mail Australia that 'if any of our job advertisements gave the impression that local government experience is a prerequisite, this was not our intention'. 'It is incorrect to suggest that the City of Ryde exclusively hires from within. In fact, of the last 30 roles filled in our customer service team, only two employees had prior local or state government experience,' a spokesperson said.   Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:...
