Guides point out some of the thousands of marks around church – but stories behind many of them remain elusive
You don’t notice them at first. The eyes tend to be drawn to the grander wonders – the altars, the stained glass, the pillars and flowing arches. But once the marks carved into the stonework of Salisbury Cathedral by centuries of pilgrims
churchgoers and mischief-makers are pointed out
A “graffiti tour” of the great Wiltshire church is being launched in May with guides pointing out what feel like whispered messages from the past
from initials of people long-forgotten to images of animals and flowers and “protection marks” thought to keep evil at bay
There is also a piece of backwards writing that some think may be a curse
View image in fullscreenSalisbury Cathedral
Photograph: Ben Birchall/PAA team of volunteers have spent a year finding and mapping the graffiti
and experts have tried to pin down some of the stories behind it
but the reality is that most of the tales they could tell remain elusive
“We know so much about other parts of the cathedral
for example the stained glass windows – when they were made
who designed them and so on – but we can’t know everything about the graffiti
worked in and known the cathedral through the centuries and left their marks
We can speculate in some instances and try to understand the lives of people back then but we can’t know everything.”
“It’s exciting to spot things that may not have been seen for years
And then we can debate what they mean,” she said
The Guardian was given a preview of the tour
starting with a couple of footprints close to the west doors
placed their footwear on a hunk of limestone supporting a pillar and carved around their footprints
with the initials “JG” and “WS” next to them

curvy style of writing has been dated to the 17th century and
the cathedral thinks it may have been created by a man called Nicholas Gilberd
who was having a row with the authorities over boundaries
At the bottom of a letter to the cathedral
In the south quire aisle there is a collection of lines and dots
It is possible that members of a medieval choir carved a long-lost tune here as they waited to sing
Close by is a piece of medieval Latin text
difficult to decipher but the cathedral thinks it may be a curse because some of it is written backwards
it could also be that this wasn’t a very good writer
There is a gaming board in the morning chapel and the guides like to imagine medieval priests sitting down to while away a few minutes in a quiet corner

One of Mangan’s favourites is a bird and the creator has cleverly used a triangular natural break in the stone for its beak
The cathedral is not suggesting modern visitors follow suit
attitudes seem to have been much more accepting
Marks are often found in very public areas
suggesting they were both accepted and acceptable.”

Photograph: Jim Wileman/The GuardianPell is fond of the initials and names remembering “ordinary” people
believed to have been carved by mourning relatives of people who may not have been commemorated elsewhere
“When we look around the cathedral and see memorials to the rich and famous
we rarely get a glimpse of the ordinary folk,” she said

Many slammed The Valley surface’s performance at last month’s William Reid Stakes meeting while forecast rain on Friday could sabotage track manager Tony Salisbury’s work ahead of Saturday’s fixture
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing
Followed categories will be added to My News
Mother Nature has given The Valley track manager Tony Salisbury another hospital pass leading into Saturday’s nine-race card
The Valley copped plenty of stick from punters and participants for the way it raced at last month’s William Reid Stakes meeting
many suggesting the track heavily favoured runners near the inside rail
Rain on the eve of the meeting caused the track to race like a heavy track on the day
The weather bureau has forecast up to 25mm of rain on Friday after weeks of unseasonal warm and dry weather in Melbourne
“You wouldn’t read about it would you?” Salisbury said
“It’s been 30 degrees and 26 degrees leading up to Easter and on Friday night at midnight
Salisbury said he analysed the way The Valley track raced on the day, noting horses could run on when circumstances allowed, including Jimmysstar, who charged home for third in the William Reid Stakes before saluting in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes in Sydney last Saturday
it stood up quite well and all of the horses came out of it well,” Salisbury said
He said specialist testing of The Valley surface revealed other issues that contributed to the track’s performance
• Wolfe sprinter out to rebound in The Quokka
“We had the 12mm (on the Friday) but it was the worst case scenario,” Salisbury said
“We knew the track wasn’t 100 per cent with the roots and there were some things that caused that
“We got some testing done post William Reid day and found several diseases within the grass canopy and root zone.”
The Valley’s track staff immediately got to work to eradicate the diseases from the affected areas of the course while a four-week break between meetings with mostly fine weather also helped the track recover
Salisbury walks the track twice a day and said he had been amazed at The Valley’s recovery from the issues that plagued the William Reid Stakes meeting

“We’ve adjusted those issues and the track itself looks 10 times better than it did leading into the William Reid
plus a break of four weeks off with no racing gave us some opportunities to do some remedial works that we don’t otherwise get a chance to do with seven meetings in seven weeks,” Salisbury said
“Those remedial works after the William Reid took about a week and a half for the guys to get around and do those repairs
“The taking care of those diseases and the recovery time of the track has taken about two-and-a-half to three weeks
“There’s much thicker canopy of grass on the track
I’ve cut it at four inches and will just let it grow out for the rest of the week.”
Hosting a nine-race card rather than William Reid Stakes Day’s 11-race meeting will also help the track stand up to Saturday’s meeting

MD---When Ellery Stamp and Caroline Daly walk across the stage at Spring Commencement in just a few weeks
they will leave behind a Salisbury University they changed during their four years as students in the Franklin P
studying marketing at the Instituto Lorenzo d’Medici (LdM) in Florence
They were the latest in a long line of SU students studying abroad there over many years without SU’s having any formal relationship with the famous Florentine study center
they will be the last to have to go on their own
SU President Carolyn Ringer Lepre recently signed a memorandum of understanding with LdM President Carla Guarducci that will simplify the process for more SU students to study abroad in the heart of the Tuscany region
The agreement will make it easier for SU students to apply their financial aid to their study abroad program in Italy and will help faculty members better advise them on how the courses that they take at LdM can count toward their SU degrees.
I knew I wanted to take a class that would help strengthen my knowledge of marketing
as well as give me the cultural aspect while studying away in a foreign country,” said Stamp
“I was able to interact and create lifelong relationships with peers
professors and business owners that I never would have had the ability to make without studying abroad.”
While LdM has a strong curriculum of business courses that attract students from prestigious business schools throughout the U.S.
the LdM curriculum is best known for its courses in the arts
Its specialty certificate programs in design
study abroad is also about the experiential learning that happens all throughout the experience
“The opportunity to study abroad has taught me that I love to travel
try new things and adapt to the cultures around me,” said Daly
“I am so lucky that I was able to study abroad with one of my best friends
ate the best food and learned so much in our wine marketing class
Our eyes were opened to the societies around us.”
Stamp enjoyed the travel they were able to do on the weekends: “I was able to travel to Paris
It was amazing to make connections with fellow students from the United States that came to study abroad in Florence.”
SU students will have the opportunity to study abroad at LdM during winter
“Italy has always been a sought-after destination for SU students to study abroad,” said Dr
SU assistant provost for international education
“Thanks to the leadership of Caroline and Ellery
SU will be able to facilitate such adventures in learning to more students.”
Registration is open for the 2026 winter term and beyond. For more information, visit the SU study abroad portal and type “Lorenzo d’Medici” in the search bar.
