England head coach Sarina Wiegman has said the UK's likely hosting of the 2035 World Cup is "so exciting" and will provide "another boost" to the women's game, while captain Leah Williamson suggested she has not given up hope of playing in the home tournament
FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Thursday that the United States and the United Kingdom are poised to be named as hosts of the Women's World Cup in 2031 and 2035
Infantino said that the joint bid from England
Wales and Northern Ireland was the only "valid bid" of interest for the 2035 tournament after the deadline passed
with the United States also putting forward the only bid for the 2031 edition
Formal bids for 2035 must be submitted this winter
with a vote taking place next year to confirm hosts for 2031 and 2035
Wiegman masterminded the the Lionesses' triumph at the European Championship in 2022 which England hosted
while Williamson lifted the trophy as captain
"It's really good news, and it would be really great if that tournament will be held here," Wiegman told a news conference ahead of England's Nations League game against Belgium on Friday

but Wiegman said the 48-team tournament will "empower women in sport."

"It will grow the game again in different countries because different countries have opportunities to come and still lots of challenges to overcome because countries are in different stages of their development
Williamson said the home tournament can build upon the impact the Euros had in the UK in 2022
"I think obviously that World Cup isn't confirmed
I know that we're a sole bidder," Williamson said
I'm proud to have been a part of such a good show for women's football
the conversations that we are in all the time about how we push the game on
I think 2022 was a great demonstration of that intent
And then to follow up with a World Cup bid
I think it says a lot about how much we care about women's football here on home soil
"I think we know the impact that we can have by demonstrating how incredible those tournaments can be."

Fetū Sāmoa five-eighth Tavarna Papali’i has described her role in the stunning try that secured the Pacific nation’s place in next month’s World Cup play-off as a career highlight.
Papali’i regathered a kick from halfback Pauline Piliae-Rasabale and passed to lock Evah McEwan before wrapping around to receive the ball back and send centre Lindsay Tui over for the final try in Samoa’s 30-16 win.
The 2022 Australian Schoolgirls captain, who overcame a ruptured ACL last year to make her NRLW debut this season and play in Sydney Roosters grand final win, was one of the rookies to star for Samoa.
Titans centre Sarina Masaga and 19-year-old Dragons winger Jessica Patea, who is yet to make her NRLW debut, scored two tries apiece, while Papali'i was player of the match in her Test debut.
“It was pretty special because at the Roosters I’ve been coming off the bench and playing in the middle, which I love as well, but being able to get back to an edge and ball play a bit more - especially for my country- was super special to me,” Papali’i said.
“My dad was born in Samoa and he is very proud, as is all of my family back home. Now that we are going to New Zealand [for the World Cup play-off], I'll get to see all my dad's side of the family over there.
“I know they're cheering for me far and wide, and I can definitely say that my dad's super proud, especially when I first told him that I made the team. For him to see me win would have topped it off for him.”
Detailing the lead up to Tui’s 65th minute try that booked a place in the World Cup decider on November 2 against the winner of Saturday’s Fiji-Cook Islands Test, the 19-year-old revealed she had spotted Tongan fullback Ana Malupo out of position.
“I just saw the fullback [Malupo] start shifting really far right and our aim was to kick to the right, but once I saw her out of place and the post was free, I just screamed at 'P' to kick for post,” Papali’i said of her call to Piliae-Rasabale.
“I was chasing my hardest, I felt a bit scared I was going to get kicked straight in the gut in the air but then I had Evah McEwan outside me and I popped the ball back to her.
“She got a couple more metres, popped it back to me, and then I could give it out to my centre Lindsay Tui.
“It was very surreal, very hectic. I was very scared at first, but I had all the confidence in my left side and my team for working the whole 70 minutes to get us through. Being able to put the finishing touch on the win was pretty special.”
Fellow rookie Sarina Masaga scored two tries to cap a rollercoaster season in which she was sidelined with a shoulder injury before making her NRLW debut for the Titans in Round 7.
“A few months ago, I couldn’t have imagined myself being here right now,” Masaga said.
“To be where I am is just full credit to my coaching staff and my physio team for trying their best to get me out on that field, and credit to myself as well for just working hard, staying in there and just fighting to get better every day.
“Both my parents are Samoan born and then they move to New Zealand to build a life for me and my siblings, so to play for them is special.
“To be one step away from the World Cup means everything to us girls. We are just going to go out there and give it our best.”
Masaga is one of four Titans players in the Samoa squad, while injured centre Niall Williams-Guthrie is on the team’s staff.
The 20-year-old said Williams-Guthrie and Titans superstar Evania Pelite had helped her prepare for a successful debut.
“I’m grateful and pretty lucky to be able to play alongside some of my fellow Titans girls,” she said. “I think it's pretty cool, especially to learn off Niall and Vani, who have got experience in different codes as well.
“Especially Vani’s leadership that she shows and just her actions as well. Niall just her comms and advice because she is a centre, as well, so I just try to take all the advice from Niall and put it into action.”

Time to dial in his new clubs is paying off for Darcy Boyd as he takes a one-stroke lead into the final round of the CMR Recycling Sarina Golf Club Pro-Am
Boyd shot 8-under 55 in Round 1 on Saturday to edge James Mee (56) by a single stroke with Nathan Page (57) and Tim Hart (57) a shot further back in a tie for third
Joint winner with John Lyras at Bowen just a few days ago
Boyd wielded his new clubs that he put in the bag prior to Townsville to great effect
opening his round with three straight birdies
There would be six more over the course of his round and a lone bogey at the par-3 16th at the 16-hole Sarina layout
“I got a new set of clubs at Townsville and put them straight in the bag,” said Boyd
“I hadn’t really done any testing with them and they were sort of there at Townsville
“Had a few days off before Bowen and got my numbers and started to feel comfortable with them
“I felt like I had a lot of good numbers again today
Started with three in a row and just had perfect numbers into each and they were sort of all tap in
In his second year on Tour and with a win at Portsea earlier in the year
Boyd says he has returned to the North Queensland swing of the adidas PGA Pro-Am Series a more confident player
“Last year was my first year out on Tour and I was a bit of a deer in headlights really,” he admitted
but in terms of just playing in the afternoon field and seeing guys shoot such low scores morning and afternoon
“I feel a bit more comfortable with it now and I think that’s just what you’ve got to do to compete
especially in this North Queensland swing.”

EXCLUSIVE: Sleep Token Members REVEALED!
“Why am I so sad?!” is definitely the kind of song where I wanted to prioritise camp and fun more than anything else
The tone of the song is essentially making a mockery of the part of your brain that's sad for seemingly no reason
It's frustrating to feel down when you don't think you should be
but it also seems to just be a part of life unfortunately
Because of that I wanted “Why am I so sad?!” to be almost funny
Instead of crying at the issue we laugh at its ridiculousness
I knew I wanted to use clowns or clown-like imagery in the video and I wanted it to be a bit of a party scene
The idea was “feeling like a fool” mixed with “pity party.” Things like blowing up a balloon only for it to blow all the air back into your face or fly out of your hands
Party poppers that are disappointing and signs falling off the walls
I wanted the humor that comes from the pitiful
Making myself the butt of the joke is a personal joy
and I think that life is so much more fun when you don't take yourself too seriously
and I think that that really enhanced the “vibes” or the video
you’ll probably find Ducky in most of the shots!
When we got to the studio the team showed me this huge rubber ducky and I immediately fell in love with it and fixated on it
It ended up working out so well because the constant of the ducky is so cute and so sweet
and I actually kidnapped him and now he hangs out on my piano
hands down.I’m super happy with how the video came out
I feel like it captured the vibes I wanted perfectly
I was super fortunate to work with an amazing team

Maya Le Tissier and Grace Clinton must be wondering what else they have to do to impress the England manager
A common theme across Sarina Wiegman’s successful tenure has been a notion that she would only pick players who were performing for their clubs. Friday’s team selection at Wembley was truly at odds with that principle, and in a chastening half an hour’s chaos against European women’s football’s most decorated nation, the England head coach’s decisions backfired in spectacular fashion.
In naming an unchanged starting side from that which played the previous fixture in July, it was almost as if Wiegman did not feel any of the club fixtures so far this season held sufficient significance to trump any of the performances in that goalless draw away to Sweden three months ago. Yet for the match-going fans at Women’s Champions League and domestic games this term, that notion will have been truly baffling, as some of England’s most in-form players were harshly overlooked.
As England’s back four were repeatedly torn open with ease by the Germans, the Manchester City centre-back Alex Greenwood, who was integral to the team that deservedly beat the European champions Barcelona with a clean sheet just 17 days ago and is captaining the side that are top of the Women’s Super League table, must have been wondering what she would have to do to start an international game.
Read moreThe same thought was surely crossing the mind of the Manchester United centre-back Maya Le Tissier
who has been in inspired form at the heart of a Manchester United defence that has conceded only one goal in five games in all competitions this season
And what about the standout young star of the WSL campaign so far
whose three goals in four league games from midfield have illustrated her ruthlessness in the area
watching her teammate Ella Toone roll a gilt-edged chance just wide
The point is not that Leah Williamson
Millie Bright nor Toone deserve to be lambasted
nor that any of them deserve fans’ ridicule
nor that their places in the England side should be in jeopardy long-term
All of them have contributed magnificently to the Lionesses cause and will be legends of the English game for ever
They have certainly not become inferior overnight
But in omitting the players who are in the best form of all
energetic and skilful Manchester City midfielder Jess Park
Wiegman unintentionally sent a message to all her eligible players in the English talent pool that current club form is not as big a factor in her decision-making process than the importance of how well the established players have played for their country previously
View image in fullscreenThe centre-back pairing of Leah Williamson and Millie Bright struggled against Germany and arguably should not have been selected to start
Photograph: Anthony Hanc/REX/ShutterstockIn fairness
Le Tissier and Park all got chances in the second half
although there were no match minutes afforded to Clinton
But during her pre-match press conference on Thursday
when discussing how much Germany had changed since the 2022 European Championship final
Wiegman had pointed to her own team’s evolution by saying: “We are a different team because we’ve moved on too.”
the starting lineup that Wiegman chose for Friday ended up resembling the one that clinched that Euros title rather more closely than that quote had implied
There were just four changes from the history-making starting XI
scarcely felt like new changes because they were the super subs of the 2022 campaign
Ellen White and Rachel Daly have retired and Fran Kirby was absent with injury
Free weekly newsletterNo topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women’s football
specific shift in starting personnel has been the introduction of the Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton in place of Mary Earps
As far as the 10 outfield positions are concerned you could go as far as saying Friday’s were the 10 you might have expected to start games in autumn 2022
Nine of them did start a qualifier against Austria in September 2022
The other side of this coin is an admirable level of loyalty from the Dutchwoman
which will no doubt have been appreciated by her captain
and that may well come back to prove invaluable for Wiegman at next summer’s Euros if those two play as well as they did on home soil in 2022
in the one area of the pitch where Wiegman has boldly shown that she does not pick big names by dropping Earps for Hampton
being exposed at her near post for Germany’s third in particular
albeit she made two excellent saves to stop the visitors notching up a cricket score
a lot of rotation and experimentation will now be made for Tuesday’s friendly against South Africa in Coventry
But that occasion will not match the pressure cooker that is a meeting with Germany at Wembley
There was no better experience to offer a young
emerging star like Le Tissier or Clinton the chance to show what they are made of
Wiegman now has three further friendlies to try out new things before the Christmas break
and she must not waste those three further chances to mix things up
Sarina Wiegman’s assistant coach and right-hand man Arjan Veurink will depart from the Lionesses set-up after this summer’s Euros competition to become Netherlands boss
The 38-year-old has worked alongside Wiegman since 2017, guiding the Netherlands to a European Championship title and to the 2019 World Cup final
where they were beaten 2-0 by the United States
They then replicated these achievements with England after making the switch from the Netherlands in 2021, leading the Lionesses to their memorable Euros title in 2022 on home soil before they lost out to Spain at the 2023 World Cup final in Australia.
A key tactician and confidant of Wiegman’s, the former Twente women head coach will take charge of his first international match in October 2025, with his contract set to run until 2029.
Veurink said: ‘This is not only a great challenge and a wonderful new adventure, it also feels like a logical next step in my career.
'I have never made a secret of the fact that I wanted to be ultimately responsible for the Dutch national team at some point.
'With over eight years of experience at the highest level as Sarina Wiegman's right-hand woman, first with the Netherlands and now in England, I am ready to stand on my own two feet.
'The fact that this opportunity has now arisen in the Netherlands makes it extra special. I will now do everything I can to conclude the coming months in England in style, and then start this new chapter after the European Championship in Zeist.'
Under the Dutchman, FC Twente were crowned Dutch national champions four times, as well as winning the KNVB Cup once.
An FA spokesperson said: 'We can confirm that Arjan Veurink will depart The FA following UEFA Women's EURO 2025 and will take on the role of Netherlands women's head coach.
'He continues to be a highly valued and respected member of Sarina’s team and has complete focus on the Lionesses’ current UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign and this summer’s tournament.
'There’s plenty more work to be done together before it's time to say our farewells.'
