has visited White Park in Scone to announce a $3.1 million commitment from an elected Coalition Government to further develop the equestrian precinct
Mr Joyce met with Upper Hunter Shire Mayor
which will support upgrades to the campground area
noting the benefits the upgrades will bring to local tourism and the equine sector
“This is a major investment in one of our most important regional facilities,” Mayor Collison said
“It will improve the experience for visitors
support the growing demand for equine events and help drive economic activity across the Upper Hunter.”
Mr Joyce said boosting the town’s ability to deliver for the equine community would help increase visitor numbers and cash flow into the local economy
“An elected Coalition Government will commit $3.1 million towards an impressive $3.45 million upgrade of the equestrian precinct,” Mr Joyce said
“The improvements will greatly increase the appeal and capacity of the camping grounds and help encourage visitors to stay longer in ‘Australia’s Horse Capital’.”
The Council thanked The Nationals for their ongoing support of White Park
which has already seen previous Federal funding deliver improvements including grandstand seating

Sparke Helmore has absorbed Scone Legal
growing its practice in the Upper Hunter region
Scone Legal’s team will be integrated into Sparke Helmore’s property environment and finance practice group and work closely with the Newcastle office. Jane Watson, Scone Legal’s principal and sole practitioner, joins Sparke Helmore as a consultant.
“We are very pleased to join with the Scone Legal team. Maintaining and growing our presence in the Upper Hunter is a commitment that’s important to the firm as well as to the wider community”, said Andrew White, Sparke Helmore’s national managing partner, in a media release. “I have known Jane for many years and with her specialisation in rural issues, she and her team will add another dimension to the services that we offer in the region”.
Watson pointed out that both firms are deeply rooted in the Hunter region.
“Bringing the Scone Legal business under the banner of Sparke Helmore is an exciting move. It allows us to provide our loyal local clients with large firm resources while maintaining the friendly, professional service we are known for. Both firms have strong roots in the Hunter region—Sparke Helmore over 140 years and Scone Legal over 100 years—and our values strongly align, making this an excellent cultural fit”, she said.
Watson has worked in the Upper Hunter region since her admission as a solicitor in 1992. She is experienced in property law and rural conveyancing as well as water law, business law, elder law, and estates, wills, and succession planning. She is part of the NSW Law Society and the Hunter Valley Law Society.
Saddle up – the countdown is on to the 45th Scone Horse Festival.
With just a month to go before festivities begin, Australia’s equine capital is racing to prepare for its prized parade and cup carnival.
but the Country Women's Association (CWA) NSW Tea Rooms at the event still produced a mighty amount of scones - 40,000 of them

Another scone-making triumph for the CWA with 40,000 made at the Sydney RoyalTheir efforts are estimated to raise around $250,000 for the not-for-profit community-based organisation

an average of 3333 scones were produced daily
this event is also designed to raise the profile of the CWA
the organisation surveyed the state's women late last year to get a sense of the issues they felt were of most concern to remote
women's personal safety and housing topped the survey's list
with 1670 responses to various questions from the state of healthcare and telecommunications
to education opportunities and childcare options
More than 60 per cent of respondents cited limited access to primary and specialised healthcare providers as the most concerning when it came to healthcare
the high cost of housing and a shortage of housing stock were the most worrying aspects
and we weren't sure what kind of response we'd receive
so to have that level of involvement from NSW women was really pleasing," said CWA of NSW President Joy Beames
"As the biggest women's advocacy group in the state
we developed this survey so we could get a real sense of what NSW women were concerned about and ensure our representations to policy makers reflected the issues they feel most strongly about."

De Louviere presents a shade under the odds here
but still the clear one to beat second-up dropping back from a much deeper race at Wyong where he motored home from the back
Back up 2kg for the drop in class and will naturally drift well back again from the wide draw
but should relish the bigger and more spacious track over a touch further
which can improve sharply over a longer trip coming back from provincial company
Deemee is over the odds shooting for back-to-back wins
Whittelsbach is the best of the rest at her third start
also coming out of that same Newcastle maiden as the former
Fortissimo is a promising two-year-old trained on the track which reloads 24 days after fighting hard to score a narrow win on debut here in heavy ground after being very well backed
but starting on a bottomless heavy 10 is always a tall order for a new one
he can be given plenty of time to balance up & sweep over them on much firmer footing
New Pharaoh is a locally trained four-year-old also well-placed to go back to back
Tracked the speed before going home strongly to break through first-up at Tamworth
and from a handy trailing draw near the speed
Call Me Terry is another local with more than enough ability
but may be forced further back this time from a wide draw
Corpsman is capable of running into a place deep into her prep
got under the market radar when finishing best to win on debut on the Mid North Coast and the form from that race held up immediately
Has been given a quiet trial since and offers plenty of scope
Speedy Henry is a home tracker and a clear threat resuming after scoring a tough win on debut at Dubbo
Bolt Away Now stuck on OK first-up at Gunnedah
but would have to improve sharply to trouble some of these from a wide barrier
a fresh winner at Wellington in heavy ground
can both add value into wider exotic plays
Leovanni is the one to beat in a weakened race
Has placed in all four runs this prep well when well in the market
and only needs to get clear running from the 350m to be in the finish again
Spenzalot will appreciate getting back on firmer footing at his third start
gets her chance to win again well into the prep
Has been a little soft at the end of consecutive races in similar grade over the same trip
but has gone back to the trials successfully and better placed on drying ground
Totoka must have a serious chance resuming from a nice draw and easy trial
Took on Group company as a spring three-year-old and was far from disgraced
and only career win so far came when fresh
is over the odds second-up with a key gear change and coming back home where she’s unbeaten from two starts
Brighella is an ex-Godolphin and Victorian-based three-year-old having his first start for the new Tamworth yard off a 10-week break
Pearl’s Treasure can sneak into a place at big odds
Rockbarton Angel has peeled off back-to-back flashing wins from a mile back in her last two
and getting to the middle or beyond again late in the day
but swept past the handy Meet Me In Bondi last start and that form reads well for this
Point Basse has plenty of ability and looms as the logical threat fourth-up coming back from deeper races

What is the secret ingredient in the scone recipe of the Country Women's Association of Victoria?
At the Melbourne Royal Show, the CWA sold 16,426 of the baked goods — 226 more than the last record in 2022.
'Queen of Scones' Joy Davis has been baking them at the show for 18 years and joined Sammy J on ABC Radio Melbourne.

It’s that time of year when Canberra transforms into the dance capital of Australia
After its successful (and delicious) launch in 2023
the Canberra Scone-Off is back for another year to answer the ultimate question: who makes the best scones in Canberra
locals will once again gather to bake their hearts out while raising money for the numerous community projects run by UnitingCare Kippax – because while it might be a salute to the humble scone
the event is really about celebrating food
“Scones with jam and cream are one of Australia’s most iconic and simple dishes
so it’s great we have a festival to celebrate them!” says ACT Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry
the scone baking competition will be judged based on seven categories of scones: plain scones
and “other scones” for all other categories
If baking scones aren’t your cup of tea but you’re very happy to put some to the (taste) test we have some good news: along with the baking competition
there will also be morning tea (where you’ll be served tea/coffee and a biscuit) and Devonshire Tea (coffee or tea with fresh scones
jam and cream) available at the Kippax Marketplace kitchen until 1 pm
The brainchild of three well-known Canberra foodies – Serina Bird (The Joyful Frugalista), Elias Hallaj (@CBRfoodie) and Andrea Butler (the genius behind Bakesale) – the Canberra Scone-Off was born out of shared community pride in the Kippax Church scone-baking tradition
which saw the ladies who staffed the kitchen serving Devonshire Tea with freshly baked scones during its famous jumble sales
Chief Scone Baker and Devonshire Tea engineer at the Kippax Markets
Very quickly it was the scones became the star attraction rather than the jumble sales (if you’ve had one with fresh jam and cream
and the foodie trio was inspired to turn this regular community experience into a Canberra-wide event
“For many years the Church’s markets and morning tea sales developed a reputation for great scones
hand-made by a dedicated team of volunteers
led by some of the Church’s older and wiser women,” says Serina
Once you’ve had your fill of the warm and flaky pastry (is there ever such a thing as too many scones?)
the monthly Kippax Marketplace will also be taking place until 1 pm on the day – giving you ample opportunity to digest as you explore stalls packed with Christmas items
Add ABC radio personality Lish Fejer MCing the day and a performance by much-loved Canberra comedian Sarah Stewart
and you have the perfect recipe for a good time
and ACT Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry
Free to attend, for those keen to don an apron and get their hands dirty in the kitchen, it only costs $5 to register. And while the competition will be fierce, the rewards will be sweet (especially because they include the honour and glory of knowing they are the best of the best…along with prizes)

The Daily Telegraph's Shayne O'Cass runs his expert eye over racing at Scone on Monday where there is eight races to be decided

Ditto that last bit for the local Naftali who was doing good things late first-up in a 1000m Super Maiden
Rail Trial has finished runner-up in two strong Maidens
Stock Road was on an upward trajectory leading into a Newcastle Class 1 over 1850m which makes his distant last (eased out of it more or less) so confounding
He's had a bit of time to regroup and he's obviously in very good hands with Greg Hickman
De Louviere was last at the 400m at Wyong on April 3 yet managed to pass all bar the winner
this is a good time to remind ourselves Aaron Bullock has a 40 per cent strike-rate for Messara/Gavranich
Speedy Henry is a son of Hellbent out of Speedy Natalie who was versatile enough to win the 1000m Dequetteville on debut as a two-year-old and then the 2000m Adrian Knox at three. A ‘stuffing-infused’ scone has upset traditionalists in the baked goods world – while arguments rage on about the pronunciation of the tea-time treat and whether the jam or cream goes on first
Name: The Christmas dinner-flavoured scone
Cornish scones and Cornish-themed Christmas hampers
And how do you make a scone Christmas dinner-flavoured
Actually the scone itself is “stuffing infused”
but it comes in a hamper with sliced turkey
for a “unique take on the festive flavours you love”
I’ll bet: the only thing that should be Christmas dinner-flavoured is Christmas dinner
it hasn’t riled Christmas traditionalists as much as it has scone traditionalists
“It is jam first with clotted cream on top,” according to Cathy Woolcock of the Cornwall Heritage Trust
Good to know someone is maintaining standards
in which case tradition dictates precisely the opposite: clotted cream first
although more Devonians use the Cornish method (46%) than Cornish use the Devonian (just 10%)
Will the two counties ever settle this question
since the development of the scone – in Scotland – dates to the 16th century
and the cream tea is said to be a 19th-century invention
I had no idea scones could generate such controversy
And that’s before you get to pronunciation
Some say scone so that it rhymes with bone
Maybe scones are the most divisive of all the baked goods
The National Trust could probably attest to that; it riled culture warriors as recently as last spring with its scones
Cream first? Or jam? This time it was about the recipe: the scones in National Trust cafes, it transpired, were vegan-friendly
Tory MP Bill Cash said: “There’s far too much wokery going on at the National Trust; this is just the latest example.”
It said its scones had been made without butter for many years
in order to accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements
I’m beginning to come round to the Christmas dinner scone
Do say: “It’s true what they say – Christmas comes a little stupider every year.”

Trainer Peter Snowden is keen to test Lavish Empire over 1500m again after his surprise win at the trip in the Muswellbrook Cup with a view to next month’s Scone Cup
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing
Followed categories will be added to My News
Champion trainer Peter Snowden is considering a Scone Cup start for Lavish Empire if he maintains winning form in the Precise Air Handicap (1500m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday
Snowden said Lavish Empire surprised him with his new-found stamina reserves when he defeated Grebeni in the Muswellbrook Cup last start
“We had never tried Lavish Empire at 1500m before but he hit the line really well to win at Muswellbrook,” Snowden said
“I thought he should have another crack at the trip and if he runs well again then I’m thinking about setting him for the Scone Cup next month
“If he can run a mile (1600m) then it opens up a lot more opportunities.”
Lavish Empire is second emergency but is over the odds at $21 with TAB Fixed Odds for the Randwick race where Ducasse is the $4.20 favourite
But Snowden’s promising sprinter Zealously dominates at the betting at $1.80 for the Jeff Pendlebury Handicap (1000m)
Zealously resumed with a close second to Wondereach at Warwick Farm and Snowden said three-year-old has been improved by the run
“He ran super first-up and was only caught right on the line,” Snowden said
“He has come on well from that and this looks a nice race for him on paper
“When he was last in work he only had four runs for three wins then he ran fourth to Private Harry in The Sunlight on the Sunshine Coast so his form is very good.”
A busy finish in the Muswellbrook Gold Cup at @thebrookracing and it's Lavish Empire who books his Big Dance chance!ðA double to @SnowdenRacing1 today with Mitch Bell in the saddle!@racing_nswpic.twitter.com/14bBKQIuRJ
• ‘It’s a sad day’: Group 1-winner Happy Clapper dies
resumed with a close fourth against older horses at Warwick Farm earlier this month
“He ran well first-up and he will like the ‘cut’ in the track on Saturday,” Snowden said
“I’m looking to take him to the Gold Coast on May 10 (Gold Coast Guineas) if he runs well at Randwick.”
Akaysha won impressively on debut at Kembla Grange earlier this month
recording a very fast 55.86s for the 1000m
She is at $8 in early betting behind favourite Beskar at $2.50
At the Kensington Anzac Day meeting on Friday, Snowden has Queen Of Dragons resuming in the Gallipoli Handicap (1400m)
Although Queen Of Dragons is rated at $17 for her return to racing
Snowden believes the mare is an each-way chance
“Queen Of Dragons doesn’t mind the sting out of the ground,” Snowden said
“She trialled super the other day in a good heat and she can run well fresh.”
