Out of crisis came creativity for New Zealand professor Peter O’Connor
who visited the school in late May to launch his first children’s book
has chosen Seven Hills West Public School for the global launch of his first children’s picture book
A week before the release of the book in New Zealand
Professor O’Connor read the story - A Teaspoon of Light - to an enthralled group of Seven Hills West students
Professor O’Connor is Director of the Centre for Arts and Social Transformation at Auckland University
His work focuses on how the arts can help create more socially just and equitable worlds
He was inspired to write the book after working with children following major earthquakes in Christchurch and Mexico
“High quality (children’s) literature is literature which pays attention to the language and is complemented by illustrations
It opens up possibilities for conversation with children about important things,” Professor O’Connor said
“They don’t preach at kids about what to do
Quality literature has those hallmarks of being rich in metaphor and rich in the devices of the English language we use to teach in schools.”
A Teaspoon of Light tells the story of a young girl
named after Professor O’Connor’s granddaughter
who has a dream cloth that reminds her of the people she loves and safe and happy times
When times get tough and the cloth rips in two
loving memories before she can bring back the old ones and think about the future
“My granddaughter looks just like the Marley in the book,” Professor O’Connor said
The metaphor is the light mends things that are broken
The light can be found in the darkest of places and it starts as a glimmer and then it grows
and it grows as you remember those who’ve helped you on the way
“Marley reaches for the teaspoon and that for me is what you have to do
“I was aiming for a story that showed that despite how bad the world can get
and that I think is just so important everywhere
I’ve taken that story into disaster zones all over the world

An older man has died after a house fire that happened around 10 p.m
in Seven Hills on Thursday at a house on Ridgewood Drive
Pastor Chris Helton told News 5 that he was taking his garbage up the driveway to the curb when he noticed an orange glow inside one of the house windows
“I just pray that he was received into the arms of God's mercy and embraced by that eternal love," Helton said
but it did draw out one of the neighbors," Helton said
The two proceeded to go around and try all the other doors
“When the window started to shatter from the heat of the fire
Seven Hills Fire Chief James Meklemburg told News 5 that when his crew arrived
they encountered heavy fire from the front of the house
Neighbors said that there was an elderly male that lived at that home
and they thought that he was probably at home at that time," Meklemberg said
Meklemberg said firefighters went inside and searched the home
They were able to find the male lying on the floor," said Chief Meklemberg
"They were able to pull him out of the house
Firefighters pulled the man from the home and began CPR…they rushed him to an awaiting ambulance…unfortunately the man passed away before they could even drive away
it's just a tough way to start the year," said Meklemberg
to start a year off with a death in a house fire is pretty rough."
Helton told News 5 they did all they could to save their neighbor
“I think we have to trust ourselves to God's grace
Trust our neighbor to that same grace," said Helton
"Lift him up in prayer and just pray that God will embrace him in divine love
and he'll heal anything that is broken or wounded and grant him eternal life
So that was certainly my prayer last night.”
“[He was] one of those good neighbors who doesn't cause any trouble
The fire chief says the cause of the fire is still unknown
and the state fire marshal has been called in to investigate
They also don't know the cause of the man's death
