Shepparton Foodshare board chair Jeremy Rensford spoke with heart humour and happiness at the opening of the food aid organisation’s brand-new purpose-built facility in Mooroopna last week Mr Rensford welcomed the crowd of more than 100 to the event that celebrated the community’s collective efforts to address hunger in the region 13 years ago through to its move into its new home on Friday who would have ever thought it was the early 2010s when a whole lot of us in this community saw that we had way too many people who were hungry and what we understood was that a whole lot of different agencies were trying to feed people “And then some really smart people asked what could we achieve together that we couldn’t achieve alone what you see here is a result of that question and that dream.” The new warehouse is the first home fully owned by Shepparton Foodshare since it was established in 2012 It provides a secure base for the organisation to supply food relief and rescue services 390,000kg of food is distributed to more than 100 registered emergency relief agencies The new site has increased its service capacity providing more space where food can be stored and where staff and volunteers can work safely and effectively with modern facilities allowing for future growth and community partnerships Around 50 full-time jobs were created during the construction of the new facility with almost 30 local contractors and businesses engaged to provide products The new warehouse was funded by $2,918,970 from the Victorian Government and $600,000 from the Federal Government Contributions from the Margaret Attwood Trust and the Freemasons Foundation of Victoria went towards fitting out the facility while the land was donated by local philanthropists the Andreadis family After a Welcome to Country by local Indigenous man Paul Cooper Victorian Regional Development Minister Jaclyn Symes took to the microphone “What an honor to follow the passion of you I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday than in the Goulburn Valley,” Ms Symes said there are so many people in Shepparton who wear multiple hats so I know that there’s councillors who are also board members part of the broader support for amazing organisations in Shepparton.” including Federal Member for Nicholls Sam Birrell Suzanna Sheed and City of Greater Sheppparton Mayor Shane Sali while also making special mention of Foodshare’s acting chief executive and the organisation’s dedicated volunteers Shepparton Foodshare partners with supermarkets growers and other food rescue agencies to provide free it has distributed almost five million kilograms of food the director of Mooroopna Education and Activity Centre one of the more than 100 agencies registered with Shepparton Foodshare “I've worked in the community sector for many years,” Ms Phillips said “The growth of this one-stop food support service has been essential and phenomenal I see a real and lasting impact by Foodshare on children and our community I think of the young mother living in a tent in a friend’s backyard with her three children “With the help of food and meals from Foodshare she's able to stretch her limited grocery money it's reassurance that a community stands by her “She told me that knowing food relief was available gives her comfort There are now an additional 50 volunteer opportunities available across warehouse roles and on the board as well as a new commercial kitchen to maximise food usage and minimise waste Cooling and freezer rooms have doubled in size compared with the previous site allowing access by forklifts to reduce manual handling processes and perhaps the most welcome addition for the volunteers “This new warehouse is a game-changer for our organisation,” Mr Rensford said “It gives us the capacity to store and distribute more food to more people and respond faster in times of need so we can better support those who need it most.” Mr Rensford and Ms Symes officially declared the new site open with the unveiling of a plaque before staff and volunteers facilitated warehouse tours and finished the occasion by doing what they do best surrendering a 2-nil lead in its opening clash against Shepparton United And the South mentor got it in spades as they strode onto McEwen Reserve with a point to prove against Bendigo-based Strathdale in their Bendigo Amateur Soccer League clash The black and white wave had more than half the squad represented in the goal-scoring column going 3-0 up at half-time of the round two fixture before doubling that by the time the final whistle was blown “I feel we had a point to prove to ourselves,” Viney said “We wanted to be more confident with the ball try to keep it on the floor and play through the lines “I felt like we let ourselves down a bit last week in terms of how we were playing and our style we were on the track working on a few routines and I feel like it really paid off “We were in control for most of the game and I think that showed by the scoreline.” The 6-1 victory yielded half-a-dozen individual scorers They were well-served with some slick ball movement out of the back half with Viney singing the praises of not only his entire squad Rohan Byrne and Jaxon McDonald played well; he’s a young guy at right back and he’s stepped into his role really well.” The result lifts South to third on the table but its five-goal margin was pipped at the post for the round’s largest which enjoyed a significant early boost to the goal difference by blasting 11 through Epsom’s in five women struggle to afford pads or tampons — and for those living in regional areas free pad and tampon vending machines are being installed at public sites across Victoria The statewide rollout was officially launched by the minister for women at TAFE Gippsland on May 1 with new machines now installed at the Bairnsdale and Warragul campuses “Period products are necessary but expensive and not having access to them impacts women and girls in all sorts of negative ways,” state Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said “Our program to provide free pads and tampons makes sense and will make a big difference for women and girls right across the region.” The program kicked off in Melbourne last year with 50 machines placed across 30 metro sites more than 25,000 free packs were dispensed — a clear sign that the demand is real up to 1500 machines will be in place at more than 700 locations around the state train stations and other busy community spots The idea is to make period products easier to get because limited access can have a ripple effect — affecting health keeping people home from school or work and preventing them from taking part in daily life It’s a real issue faced by women and girls in regional areas they’re a necessity — this rollout means women and girls right across Victoria won’t have to miss work or school because they can’t afford them,” Minister for Women Natalie Hutchins said To help make the rollout practical on the ground councils were invited to suggest sites they felt would best serve their communities This initiative builds on earlier work providing free period products in government schools and is part of broader efforts to improve access to health and wellbeing support for women and girls “Inability to access sanitary products should never be a barrier to participation in education,” TAFE Gippsland acting chief executive Justin Fallu said “These new vending machines provide free and discreet access to essential period products For more details and a full list of locations, visit the Victorian Government website Towering Shepparton football product Matt Whitlock has found out how fast life moves in the AFL world Whitlock was nearing the end of his schooling he has signed a contract extension with North Melbourne until the end of 2027 The one-year deal for Whitlock added onto the automatic two-year contract he received when being taken with pick 27 in last year’s AFL Draft North Melbourne head of football talent Brady Rawlings said the club had been impressed by Whitlock’s start to his career at the Roos and was eager to extend his stay “Matt has stood out to us with his athleticism clean hands and ability to play at both ends of the ground,” Rawlings said “For him to make his AFL debut as a key position player at just 18 is a testament to the great progress he’s already made during his short time at the club.” Whitlock trained during the pre-season as a defender and impressed across the opening two rounds at VFL level His form earned the 197cm defender his AFL debut against Sydney at Marvel Stadium in round four Whitlock returned from an ankle injury last Friday for the Roos’ VFL clash against Essendon at Windy Hill Also making his return to the field was Girgarre product Brayden George who laced up the boots following consecutive ACL injuries George — signed on until the end of 2026 — played his first game in 320 days against the Bombers' VFL side The highly-rated third-year prospect collected three touches and three tackles as a deep forward on limited minutes for the Roos The women from Kialla Park are playing like a united front in 2025 Shepparton United has made its intentions clear to start the Northern Country Women’s League’s senior competition The Demons have made it three dominant wins from their opening three games with the most impressive being Friday night’s victory over the previously undefeated Nathalia in round four With a yellow Sherrin in hand and under the bright lights at Nathalia Recreation Reserve Shepparton United coach Grant Searle’s players hit the field with ferocity as the Demons kept their opponents goalless for the match United piled on 12 majors of its own as it cruised to a 0.1 (1) to 12.7 (79) victory on the road Searle said the effort from each member of the United team was commendable “It was a very good win in trying conditions; it was very slippery on the night,” Searle said they stuck to the plans we had put in place and we got the job done “It was really difficult to pick out our award winners because I thought it was an all-over great performance from all the girls.” Throughout the Demons' three consecutive victories Searle said it had been the club’s leaders who had stepped up “No doubt our captains are performing admirably well; that would be Melissa Foster and Rebecca Monk,” he said “I think Simone Carkeek and Tayla Sampson and even Kieley Lane (have impressed across the first three games)." United has conceded only 16 points across the first three fixtures with Echuca (nine points) the only side to better that stat The Demons have also piled on the pain up forward and are by far the best attacking team in the league at the moment Gun forward Payten Johnston leads the competition's goal-kicking with 12 from two games never wanting to be caught taking their eyes off the ball Searle said his players would be focusing on their goal-kicking at training this week Rumbalara secured a 32-point victory over Tatura on the road Mansfield won its first game of the season after defeating Barooga 49-17 at Mansfield Recreation Reserve Shepparton United dominated Nathalia away from home by 85 points The Demons’ Zara Findlay was the star as she booted five goals Shepparton Swans fell to Barooga in a heavy defeat by 57 points and Moama overcame Echuca United by 19 points After a slow start to the Big V Championship season the Gators have found their rhythm recording back-to-back wins at the weekend to push their record to five and three and climb into fifth place on the ladder after five rounds The Gators held off a late push from the Bellarine Storm to take a hard-fought 96-90 win in front of a vocal home crowd Star import Ryan Batte led the way with 28 points and 14 rebounds showing off three-level scoring and hitting clutch free throws down the stretch Kiwi point guard Josh Kooiman added 15 points while Tom Frame and Bryce Brown chipped in with 9 and 11 points respectively scoring 28 points in the first quarter and building a double-digit lead by half-time cutting the margin to one point heading in to the final term Gators coach Josh Waight said while there were moments of slippage he was proud of how his team responded under pressure “There were definitely some lapses and I probably didn’t get my rotations right at times,” Waight said “But to the boys’ credit they stayed composed and found a way to finish the game.” One of the turning points came in the fourth quarter when Eric Miraflores hit a timely three-pointer to force a timeout and wrestle the momentum back in Shepparton’s favour but provided a burst of energy and poise off the bench “That was a big play in the context of the game,” Waight said “I thought Eric gave us a real lift and Framey was really solid too.” had one of his most complete outings of the year His late-game strip and no-look assist to Miraflores drew roars from the crowd and summed up his two-way impact “I would love to have my offensive game like that consistently That's a big part of what I'm trying to work on at the moment,” Frame said “Defence kind of creates my offensive game “If I'm getting steals and being a person getting deflections I'm pretty active and feeling good on the offensive end but need to be more consistent to get another one tomorrow.” The Gators backed it up less than 24 hours later with another strong performance this time outlasting Melbourne University 105-91 in a high-paced offensive showcase on Sunday afternoon Six Shepparton players finished in double figures going 7-of-12 from the field and adding nine rebounds in his most dominant game for Shepparton “It was great to see Eric go off like that,” vice-captain Sam Beks said “I don’t think it’ll be the last time we’ll see one of those games for him.” who added four points and six rebounds off the bench said the team had used the Easter break as a mini pre-season to regroup after a rough start to the year “We’ve got six new faces in this team,” he said “That Easter break gave us a chance to reset and I think we’re starting to see the results now but when we’re moving the ball and we’re doing the right things like today crediting the coaching staff and the players for buying in “We’re heading in the right direction,” he said but the offensive balance is coming together “It’s definitely been a successful weekend.” The Gators will look to extend their winning streak to four when they take on Camberwell away on Saturday Victoria’s Social Services Regulator visited regional social services providers in Bendigo focusing on understanding how they are working to keep local clients safe from avoidable events to the region providing a barrier to improve social and economic outcomes for Greater Shepparton The current Greater Shepparton Major Events Program brings in $62 million per annum which could be increased with an improved venue catering for sporting events and a range of other large events It is anticipated that over a 10-year period once completed new tournaments and events hosted by an expanded Stadium are expected to attract more than 134,000 additional visitors to Greater Shepparton The current Stadium is not compliant with basketball major tournament requirements and is said the updated survey was an important step in improving flood risk management for the region “This project is a vital investment in our community’s safety and resilience By updating flood mapping and intelligence we can better prepare for and respond to future flood events,” she said “The data collected will enhance the Goulburn Broken Flood Intelligence Portal which provides crucial information for emergency planning It will also help refine the Municipal Flood Emergency Plan to ensure our region is as prepared as possible.” The survey is funded through a grant secured by Greater Shepparton City Council under the National Partnership Agreement for Disaster Risk Reduction administered by Emergency Management Victoria This initiative aligns with the Goulburn Broken Regional Floodplain Management Strategy focusing on improving total flood warning systems Residents seeking more information about the survey can visit the following resources: This is probably not the page according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics This increase in population puts more pressure on the road network and highlights the issues around integration for the transport volumes the roads need to carry “Our region is a major freight and logistics hub with significant manufacturing and production industries located in Greater Shepparton,” Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor “This is set to grow further with the development of GV Link Enterprise Park and the availability of industrial land.” The lack of a safe and resilient road network was highlighted during the October 2022 flood event where Mooroopna and Shepparton were cut off from each other creating supply chain issues and impacting business and industry The Causeway flooding effectively prevented key staff including hospital and emergency services staff from getting to their workplaces due to the lack of access across the Goulburn River Cr Sali said a second river crossing able to withstand high flood levels is the critical factor for a resilient road network “A new Goulburn River Bridge will provide confidence for the region ensuring residents know that they will not be trapped either side of the river in the event of another major flood,” he said “Our road network is not connected and not safe We have intersections that need to be signalised or have roundabouts installed and road upgrades that provide for heavy vehicle movement east-west as well as north-south.” “The amount of funding required is significant with most of the work required for non-Council owned roads We are calling on all sides of politics to commit to providing budget for construction of these projects and invest in road maintenance services,” Cr Sali said For more information and details on the road investment needed, visit our Federal Advocacy website The program provides an opportunity for Greater Shepparton residents and visitors to participate in a number of free and low cost activities encouraging people to be
