A man aged in his 20s was found at the scene with serious head injuries and was rushed to Westmead Hospital under a police escort in a critical condition. CCTV from a nearby home timestamped 35 minutes earlier showed dozens of men in the reserve before a man suddenly flees down the street. A group of at least seven men chase after him in hot pursuit along the footpath and in the middle of the road. One of the men giving chase appeared to be wielding a baseball bat. Another man racing down the middle of the road almost gets hit by a passing car. The men eventually give up the chase moments later and race back towards the reserve a moments later. The group quickly dispersed when officers arrived at the scene, according to NSW Police. A man aged in his 20s was arrested nearby and taken to Auburn Police Station, where he spent the night being questioned by police. No charges have yet been laid as of early Monday morning, a police spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia.  The park was cordoned off as a crime scene as police launched an investigation. 'Investigations into the incident continue and any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to come forward and contact local police or Crime Stoppers,' the spokeswoman said. Bar Asra, now open, brings global flavours, cheeky cocktails and BC-forward wine to the neighbourhood, with a menu that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Run by chefs Kanwardeep Ahluwalia and Baldeep Singh, Bar Asra is all about rethinking familiar dishes with unexpected ingredients. Think ahi tuna crudo topped with jasmine rice truffle, a zippy seafood take on Thai Nam Khao salad, and lamb quiche wrapped in flaky Ceylon paratha. The murtabak gets a gooey upgrade with jalapeño and cheese, and the honey butter toast with strawberries proves dessert doesn’t have to be complicated to be memorable. “Bar Asra is a reflection of our travels, our roots and our desire to create something that feels both personal and shared,” shares Ahluwalia in a statement. “We want to celebrate the connection between cultures, ingredients and people, and we invite guests to join us on this journey of exploration.” During a preview, the cocktail menu stood out for its balance of fun and finesse, like the Porto Spritz (a fizzy white port highball) and Tokyo Silk (made with calpico and nigori sake, and as smooth as it sounds). Bonus points for a wine list that doesn’t ignore its own backyard—BC bottles get a solid spotlight here. If the address sounds familiar, it’s because the spot has long been a go-to for lovers of Indian cuisine. Once home to the iconic Vij’s, the space has since hosted a rotating cast of successors, including Vij’s Rangoli, Bombay Kitchen + Bar, Mum’z Rasoi and most recently, Sirka. Bar Asra steps into this legacy with a decidedly different approach. Bar Asra is located at 1480 West 11th Avenue. Look out for your first newsletter in your inbox soon! twitterinstagrampinterestAbout us Contact us Sign In Register Here’s what business owners in South Granville know The pace of change brought on by the Broadway Plan borders on dizzying rents are often too high and increasing crime is becoming an everyday problem That a 100-plus person supportive housing project for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness will soon open in the area I’m not staying—I’m absolutely going to move,” says Anila Frroku who co-owns the Italian fashion outlet Motrati “Nobody seems to care if a small business will survive or how something like this will affect your business.” Chalmers Lodge was purchased by BC Housing in April 2023 and will provide supportive housing to more than 100 low-income seniors It was slated for opening in the spring but a change in contractor and unanticipated renovation work has moved that timeframe into “the coming weeks,” according to a statement issued by BC Housing.   A webpage outlining the project has been established by the Crown corporation but no formal notification has gone out to nearby businesses or residents—and therein lies the rub “Of course we are frustrated—we pay huge rent and taxes every month and yet we know nothing,” said Eyes for You co-owner Brigitte Reymond-Peter “Why are we finding out about this from a journalist?” BIV spoke to roughly 40 businesses spanning 10th to 14th avenues along Granville Street and none had received any communication from the province or city Two-thirds of the businesses knew nothing of Chalmers Lodge while those who did found out from customers or through the media BC Housing told BIV that any community engagement is a municipal responsibility provided this statement: “BC Housing has obtained a combined development and building permit to complete exterior and interior renovations in the building,” the statement says “They have advised the city that their planned operations will continue to align with the institutional use classification meaning a separate development permit application and resident notification were not required.” The South Granville Business Improvement Association declined comment “It’s perplexing that they would put an SRO (single-room occupancy) in a neighbourhood where there are no facilities to support any issues that may arise,” said Lynda Barr operations manager at Diane’s Lingerie Monica Egea manages Diva Lingerie & Swimwear and has worked in South Granville for 21 years Her staff is solely female and there’s typically only one employee running the business on any given day They’ve seen an increase in theft and threats this year Egea says a move elsewhere in Vancouver would be lateral at best Downtown—who wants to go there?” Egea says I just lock the doors because it’s the only way to manage these dangerous situations.” Egea said she believes governments and police are “too soft” in their approach to chronic “I’m from a country that is dangerous and right now there is no control in Mexico—but it started like this,” Egea says “These problems will grow and grow fast.” Most employees were hesitant to go on the record due to the sensitivity of the topic but offered common excessive loitering is a problem and some employees feel unsafe at work Perhaps the most unifying sentiment is that something drastically changed after COVID-19—that the binners who traditionally kept to themselves were replaced by a more aggressive group often in highly agitated states The manager of a high-end fashion brand said the project’s presence will impact whether the company will renew its lease or move; two of the store’s employees who live in the immediate neighbourhood feel unsafe walking to and from work at times A newly opened deli has experienced consistent theft Earlier this year a man in an aggressive state of impairment threatened Egea with sexual assault when she tried to prevent him from shoplifting Frroku had a similar experience this year as well Both women were alone in their shops at the time Only four store employees who spoke to BIV supported the building’s presence in the community but all are uniformly disappointed in the lack of communication but if drug addicts move into that building that would be a disaster,” says Eyes for You co-owner Othmar Brunner The supportive housing project is coming into the area at a time when business groups across B.C are ramping up pressure on all provincial parties to address street disorder 24 suggested 67 per cent of retail respondents have noted an increase in shoplifting over the last three years Reports of violence against employees are up 45 per cent and consumer-facing employees leaving positions because they fear for their safety has risen by 44 per cent A Business Improvement Areas of BC poll issued Sept 9 canvassed 500-plus small and medium-sized businesses across B.C Close to 60 per cent of respondents reported increased violence and aggression since the decriminalization of certain illicit drugs in 2023 Vancouver Police Department (VPD) crime statistics show that the Fairview neighbourhood experienced 69 thefts under or over $5,000 in August It’s the fifth-highest total of the 24 neighbourhoods in the city longer-term VPD stats spanning 2019 to 2023 show that pre-COVID-19 numbers far exceed the most recent annual totals: Thefts fell from 918 to 796 auto thefts decreased from 851 to 291 and incidences of breaking and entering dropped from 317 to 204 The supporting housing project has been top of mind for some of the homeless people Walter Wells sees on a weekly basis Wells helped establish the Three Links Foundation last year to provide a Sunday breakfast program out of the Oddfellows Hall near Granville and Broadway It’s one of the few privately run outreach services for the homeless anywhere on the West Side The first breakfast happened in July 2023 and had two attendees That number rose to more than 100 by early September.   we are just learning as we go,” Well said which we find they value as much as the food because they are shunned all week.” drug abuse and a crippling lack of affordability are common themes in the stories Well hears He’s received some pushback from neighbours but added that “99 per cent of the guests are very respectful and grateful.” Wells isn’t particularly surprised when told that nearby businesses are resistant to the project and offers this to the broader community “I don’t think there’s going to be any more danger of people hanging around South Granville than is the case now,” Wells says “They’re just trying to make it from one day to the next If you treat them with basic respect and kindness [email protected] @BIVnews 1) 0ms;transition:fill 200ms half a billion dollars in play Super fund ISPT has filed concept plans for its Summit project at Kemps Creek while developer and manager Greystar has lodged plans for its pandemic-era site purchase—a warehouse or distribution centre at South Granville with a $189-million capital investment value The Summit concept masterplan from ISPT shows eight warehouses and a cafe for a 244,413sq m gross floor area at 706-752 Mamre Road in the Penrith Local Government Area and 39km west of the Sydney CBD Watson Young designed the scheme for the 52ha site that is in the Mamre Road industrial precinct near the under-development Aerotropolis It joins other industrial development in the precinct planned for the future Southern Link Road and neighbours GPT’s Yiribana Logistics Estate and Mirvac’s Aspect Industrial Estate Meanwhile, Greystar hopes to attract the likes of DHL, Australia Post or Toll for its site at 26 Ferndell Street, South Granville, and 464 Blaxcell Street, Guildford, about 23km west of central Sydney. Watch This Space has designed three warehouse buildings and nine units, creating 31,000sq m of space across multiple levels on the 5ha site at the midpoint between Parramatta and Bankstown. Although the Sydney industrial sector cycle is just starting to decline and property sales were slowing, rental vacancies and rates were still strong, according to a Herron Todd White report released in March 2024. The valuation and advisory company’s commercial director, Angeline Mann, said the industrial market was just starting to slow with fewer transactions but the supply issue would remain. “We forecast that rents are going to continue growing beyond 2024,” Mann said. “Location is considered to be a prime factor in determining the demand and rate of rental growth. “We are now starting to see yields increase as demand slows and values start to come back.  “It is possible that this may result in some investors returning to the industrial market but this could be hindered by weak economic conditions.” Information about working in or operating early childhood education services including outside school hours care. On Thursday 14 March, Minister for Skills, TAFE, and Tertiary Education Steve Whan was welcomed to EPP school Granville South Performing Arts High School to celebrate the success of the Educational Pathways Program. Funding has been secured for a further 2 years and the program will expand to 20 new schools across the state. The NSW Government is expanding a successful educational program that raises student engagement at schools across the state through increased access to vocational education opportunities. Funding for the Educational Pathways Program (EPP), now operating in 148 public high schools in nine regions, will be continued for another two years and expanded to an additional 20 schools across the state. The EPP is an innovative program designed to improve education and career outcomes by introducing public high school students to a range of vocational training and employment pathways. It supports existing careers activities at schools by providing extra resources including two key roles: Head Teachers Careers and School-Based Apprenticeships (SBAT) and Traineeship Engagement Officers. As part of the program, schools match students with local employers and offer support while they explore their pathways through school-based apprenticeships or traineeships. 1771 students undertake school-based apprenticeships or traineeships (SBAT), a 129 per cent increase from February to October 2023 More than 1000 students re-engage in their education through support and mentoring initiatives More than 7800 students participate in 'test and try' vocational courses with TAFE NSW 1079 students secure nationally recognised pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship credentials. One school participating in the program is Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School, which focuses on career opportunities for students in the trades and aged care sector, both areas of skilled shortages across the state. Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car said: "The NSW Government remains committed to empowering students with the skills and knowledge essential for successful futures. “The expansion of the Educational Pathways Program is a fitting example of this commitment, ensuring that more school students have access to high-quality vocational education and training.” NSW Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education, Steve Whan, said: “We know four out of every 10 new jobs created in the next decade will need vocational qualifications. “Last year, through the EPP more than 1000 students completed pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship training, earning nationally recognised VET credentials. “The EPP plays a key role in removing barriers so our public high school students remain engaged with their education and have a head start in embracing the lifetime of opportunities. “I am particularly pleased that we are expanding this program to more regional, rural and remote schools. Supporting schools outside the metropolitan areas is a key focus and I am thrilled to be able to better support regional schools with this important program”.
