(4-3) can quiet the naysayers in the best possible way on Sunday as they look to take down the crosstown rivals on their own home turf in the 30th Battle of the Bridge There’s no denying the orange tsunami hasn’t been at its surging best over the past two weeks but Sunday’s stage at the SCG looms as the perfect way to get back on the winner’s list After winning three of their opening four games the GIANTS have hit an early-season form slump following consecutive losses to the Crows and the Bulldogs but now have the chance to get back on track with victory over the Swans in what is sure to be third term last week to set up the 32-point win With many members of the media writing the GIANTS off from premiership contention this week following their back-to-back losses there’s not much more Swans were stunned be a Suns avalanche as they kicked the next 12 goals to run out convincing 38-point winners It was a stark contrast between the two halves for the Swans who looked on track for a brilliant on the road win at Peoples First Stadium before limping to the finish line to lose 17.15 (117) to 12.7 (79) to the red-hot Suns the Swans will have to overcome a slow start to the season at his brilliant season down back to finish with 21 disposals As the GIANTS look to end their two-game losing streak on Sunday they’ll need Buckley and the rest of the GIANTS backline to be at their best In Group B, there will Maconi Stallions, Wollongong Wolves, and the premiers of NPL Victoria and Tasmania. The group stage phase will consist of six matchdays with the teams of each group playing one another twice, with two feature matches to be played across each group stage round on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Remaining matches are scheduled to be played consecutively on a Sunday across two provisional match start times of 2pm and 5pm (AEST). The competition will then progress to the knockout finals series with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals. The higher placed team will host each crossover encounter with the teams to play as such: A1 v C2, B1 v D2, C1 v A2, D1 v B2. The official announcement also confirmed that the semi-finals and grand final matches will all be played at neutral venues, culminating in the Championship Final on either 6 or 7 December 2025. James Johnson, Football Australia CEO, stressed that the Australian Championship will offer a new platform for some of Australia’s most historic clubs and the top-performing NPL clubs to showcase their talents. “The Australian Championship will bring a sense of nostalgia to our football community. Genuine rivalries will be on full display to supporters of all generations, and new stories will be created on and off the field,” Johnson said in the draw announcement. “Football supporters across the country will get a taste for what our national competitions will look like in years to come, enriched with talented state-based players and aspirational foundation clubs.” The Sydney Swans have officially opened the doors to a new home in the club’s old heartland, and named it in honour of Bloods Legend, Bob Skilton OAM. Bob Skilton House is in Cecil Street outside the iconic South Melbourne Markets, providing a hub for members and fans in the heart of South Melbourne. The name was announced at a launch event on Friday night, attended by special guests including Bob’s granddaughter Rebecca Skilton and past players Leo Barry, Josh Kennedy, Tony Morwood, and Peter Bedford. The epitome of the Bloods culture, Skilton played 237 games for South Melbourne in the VFL, kicking 412 goals and winning three Brownlow Medals (1959, 1963, 1968). He won the club’s best and fairest award a record nine times, and the award today – now known as the Sydney Swans Club Champion Award – bears his name. Go behind-the-scenes of our special launch event, as the Bob Skilton House is officially opened in the heart of South Melbourne. The launch of Bob Skilton House comes ahead of Sydney’s first game in Melbourne for the year, a clash with North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night. Sydney Swans chairman Andrew Pridham said the naming is fitting recognition of Skilton’s remarkable career and pays tribute to the club’s South Melbourne heritage. “Bobby Skilton is a legend of our club and Australian Rules Football, who personifies our values and culture, and is revered by players, staff and supporters alike,” Pridham said. “Our new South Melbourne home will continue to strengthen our connection to our rich South Melbourne heritage and the name, Bob Skilton House, is a fitting tribute. “We are proud to open a base in Melbourne that our members, fans, and staff can come together and call home.” Bob Skilton House, located at 125 Cecil St South Melbourne, houses a Swanshop and is open for merch sales, member enquiries and redemptions, from 10am-2pm Monday to Friday, and 9am-2pm on Saturdays. a clear Tackling complexity is not just a matter of taste but an essential evolutionary developmental mechanism It strengthens brain plasticity and capacity and wards off loss of cognition and the "We're probably Australia's most successful club before the A-League was created in the old NSL environment and we're looking for a platform to showcase our great club and our great facilities and our great history." South Melbourne is the first Australian club to unmask itself as an applicant for the new league Four Australian clubs are pursuing a license in the league -- alongside teams from New Zealand It has been reported that 24 teams have expressed an interest in joining the OFC Professional League with the game-changing competition set to kick off in January 2026 South believe the competition, running January to May, will dovetail neatly with the newly launched national second tier, the Australian Championship Maikousis said Football Australia chairman Anter Isaac had offered his blessings "The only provision that he put on was that we don't walk away from the Australian comps at the same time "We'll treat the Australian comps and the NPL virtually as our reserves and play our strongest possible team in the [OFC] competition." South Melbourne's bid is both future-looking and tinted by nostalgia Under favourite son Ange Postecoglou, the club represented Oceania at the 2000 FIFA Club World Cup, denying Manchester United -- fresh from a treble won under Sir Alex Ferguson -- a place in the knockoff rounds with a storied showing South was shunted from Australian football's top table when the A-League era began in the mid-2000s leaving it searching for a return to major competitions South believe the OFC Professional League could be just that We're not exactly sure but we want to give it an opportunity," general manager David Clarkson told AAP Maikousis said Tottenham Hotspur manager Postecoglou "was a product of Oceania." "He cut his teeth playing against Tahiti and Vanuatu and Fiji with David [Clarkson] in those games as well," he said Along with the decorated history playing in Oceania, South also has a history of fielding OFC players, including New Zealand legends Vaughn Coveny and Steve Wooddin who Maikousis joked "ripped Australia apart" Other clubs bidding to join the league include PNG's Bougainville FC, Lae City FC, Port Moresby City FC, and Hekari United FC, as reported by The National. Kiwi media outlet Stuff revealed A-League leaders Auckland FC and minnows Nelson Suburbs were among Kiwi aspirants Clarkson said the allure of playing year-round football "They get to play in multiple competitions and also in different regions which has FIFA President Gianni Infantino's personal support for the league is underwriting the participation of New Zealand and Pacific clubs invited along with Hawaiian entrants to boost marketability South Melbourne will explore all fundraising avenues to make it work "We think we're going to be able to mount a very very strong case in terms of getting federal and state government funding," Maikousis said but it still has to stack up in terms of the financial side of it." A beer paddle is usually an oar-like length of timber with indents to hold glasses steady. It’s the perfect way to sample a bunch of beers, whether you’re a craft connoisseur or, like me, still a bit hazy about what makes a hazy. Pirate Life’s paddle ($20) is actually a metal platform that cradles a brace of 148ml beverages. I try the flagship South Coast pale ale, an elegant Japanese-style lager made with rice, a hoppy IPA and a dark, smooth double IPA. All of them are well-made, like sippable invitations to different spins on summer. If you’re a casual sipper like me, it’s no big deal: just slake my thirst. If you’re my neighbour, Chris, a beer guy who gets the stuff delivered by the keg, you might grumble about the flattening of a fertile drinkscape of handcrafted fizz. Pirate Life looks, at first glance, like a brewery with a hospitality offering to keep drinkers carbed. It’s not; the beer is made off site. Some beer bros have found this disappointing, but I see a positive: the venue has to stand on its own terms as a food and drink drawcard. The location has a Nowheresville feel, but it’s breezy and fun once you get there. Waiters are friendly and well-informed and the food is shareable and good value, driven by a wood oven stewarded by two job-sharing head chefs. Maria Delengas has Greek heritage and worked at Adelaide’s highly regarded Arkhe, where everything is cooked over fire. Nicolas Lopez is Chilean and brings influences from Italy and Japan, too. Pirate Life’s food is also the result of relationships with traders at nearby South Melbourne Market. When the chefs run short or want to experiment, they chat to a local fruiterer or butcher: it’s enriching and embeds the venue in the neighbourhood. The food is a mix of cheeky drinking snacks and more composed plates; flavours are bold. Chicken chops ($18) are marinated in evaporated milk, which makes them sweet and juicy and ready to dunk in burnt pineapple sauce. Goat spring rolls.Bonnie SavageGoat spring rolls ($16) are a fun take on a Chiko roll, packed with cabbage and fermented chilli as well as roasted meat. Cabbage is the hero of a vegan dish ($20), basted with a Sichuan-peppery glaze until it caramelises into a tasty hot mess. Dirty rice ($32), studded with calamari and long peppers, finds the meeting place between paella and jambalaya. Gloriously crispy on the bottom – rice is baked onto the base like a proper paella – it’s gratineed and golden on top, a double dose of joyful and satisfying. Go-to dish: Dirty rice with calamari and peppers.Bonnie SavageI’ve eaten one of the best steaks of my life at Arkhe, so it’s no surprise that alumnus Delengas takes the meat here seriously, with smoke notes and charcoal sizzle augmenting excellent beef (sold by weight, $15-$22 for 100 grams). My instinct is to lean towards red wine with steak but you could easily plump for a California Pale Ale, which has biscuity malt notes and enough lingering bitterness to duke it out with rich protein. Thomas and Catherine McCormack were the original owners, building the homes around 1890, naming it Catherine Terrace, after Catherine.  The couple owned the Cricketers Arms Hotel around the corner in Cruikshank Street and lived in a house behind the pub in McCormack Street. In 1959, Robert and Ella Atkinson became the second owners of the row. “Originally it was built as five separate two-bedroom cottages,” current owner Mick Arter told Domain. “Robert Atkinson, the previous owner had passed away, so we bought it from the deceased estate. He combined number 59 and number 63 together to make a three bedroom home.” Arter, who has an accounting background, purchased the properties in 2015.  Kensington: This Melbourne suburb evokes the charm of its famous London counterpart 9 of the best properties for sale in Victoria ‘We didn’t know this existed’: Melbourne’s most affordable liveable suburb “The three single fronters, including number 53, were like caves,” he said, a description his daughter coined when first seeing inside the homes.  The close quarters meant renters had their couch against one wall and had their TV on the kitchen bench.  Arter said he was drawn to the homes as he was searching for a project.  He and his wife had hoped to move from Box Hill to the Port Melbourne area after becoming empty nesters. In 2019, he worked on extensive renovations of the homes, including key restoration work, with his brother, a qualified and experienced builder. The end result was a restored heritage facade with new houses behind it and a large rear courtyard with secure pedestrian row access to Esplanade East and Edwards Park. Inside number 53, the modern three-bedroom, two-bathroom home has a wide hallway with an architectural skylight. The hallway leads to a stunning open-plan living and dining area.  Stepping up the home’s suspended oak staircase to the first floor there are two bedrooms, including one with a rooftop city-view terrace.  The third bedroom is at the front of the home on the entry level. At the heart of the home is the kitchen, with its sleek stone surfaces and premium Miele appliances. Past the kitchen, a sliding door provides access to a private courtyard.  Once the renovation work was completed, Arter subdivided the four houses into individual freehold titles. He and his wife live in one of the homes and rented out the remaining three. Over the years, he has learned about the history of Catherine Terrace. “My wife and I were in our house and we just heard a bit of a kerfuffle outside so we opened the door and there were a couple of ladies with their elderly mum outside,” he said.  “They explained that they’d just been around the corner at the Cricketers Arms Hotel for lunch and their mum used to live in one of the terraces. So we invited them in.” The elderly lady, who had lived in one of the homes as a child, was amazed by the change following the renovations. “The way she described it, her mum and dad were in the front bedroom, she and her sister were in the second bedroom and her brother was in a bungalow in the backyard,” Arter said.  “We were trying to conceptualise where the bungalow would be, because it must have been an extremely small bungalow because there wasn’t much of a yard. So, it was interesting times.”  Arter said a neighbour also told him Atkinson, or Acky as he was known by locals, was a bit of a Port Melbourne identity. He was once the runner for the Port Melbourne VFA club. Arter estimated the elderly woman’s family must have lived in the home from when the McCormick family had owned it to when Atkinson purchased it. “There was a bit of history there. [Atkinson] was given a notice from the housing commission – as effectively being a slum landlord,” Arter said.  The letter, as Arter remembers being told, ordered Atkinson to improve the standard of the house. The home is on the market with Marshall White Port Phillip. It is set to go to auction on April 5. It has a price guide of $1,575,000 to $1,675,000.
