Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Southern River Band (@thesouthernriverband) In 2024, Southern River Band set the tone with the release of their high-octane fourth record, D.I.Y., that not only landed at #6 on the ARIA Australian Albums Chart, but the vinyl needed to be repressed before it was even released. The record’s breakout six-minute epic Stan Qualen thrust the band on the global stage, charting in 23 countries and taking them on their first international tour. Their first UK show sold out in just four days, leading to a venue upgrade more than double the size, which, you guessed it, sold out - as did most of the tour. The band have performed on a multitude of European festival stages, leaving thousands gobsmacked at The Great Escape, Vestrock, Sweden Rock Festival, Rock Wrechter and Down The Rabbit Hole, and they will return in 2025 to dominate Download, Hellfest, and Resurrection festivals. Album Out Oct 4th AMARANTHE Release New Music Video For ‘Interference’ is urging parents of young children to seek support sooner rather than later if they notice communication delays having witnessed significant improvements in her son Daniel’s skills through a specialised program Noticing delays in her son’s communication milestones, Ms Coates sought assistance and was referred to Inklings an initiative designed to support children’s communication development Ms Coates didn’t expect her second child to develop any differently; however she soon recognised that her son Daniel needed extra support and has since observed significant progress “He wasn’t making many gestures which most parents wouldn’t know unless they knew that that’s something that babies should be doing intrinsically,” she said doing all the things that I was worried he would never do.” Run by The Kids Research Institute Australia (formerly known as the Telethon Kids Institute) Inklings aims to support early communication development in six to eighteen-month-old children The 10-week program is provided at no cost for eligible children who exhibit early differences in their social interaction and communication development with sessions conducted fortnightly over six months a practitioner reviews a pre-recorded video of interactions between the parent and child offering professional feedback to improve communication development Ms Coates said the program also strengthened the bond between her and her youngest son I didn’t realise there were loads of ways that Daniel was communicating and that I wasn’t picking up on because I was looking for speech all the time,” she said “It really helps to bring you and your child closer together because you feel like you can understand them and they feel like they’re understood.” said the program had been developed from decades of research in both the UK and Australia and she believes that the small changes made during the six to eighteen-month age bracket have a major flow-on effect “We’re in a model where kids may be showing signs of delayed progress we’ll wait and see till they’re three and four,’ however it’s really that six to 18 months when the brain is really developing that social communication you can make the most impact,” she said “Giving the parents that confidence and awareness of how their children are trying to communicate with them has a massive impact.” With more than 50 families having completed the program since last November and nearly 300 families inquiring Ms Coates wants more families to know about the program and the support it can offer “Inklings is a resource that I just wish more people knew about because if you don’t engage and you go down the traditional public route you could be waiting months or even years on a paediatric waitlist,” Ms Coates said “Many parents adopt a wait-and-see approach the better the outcomes for all parties.” Southern River College was alive with energy as it hosted two back-to-back events that celebrated science and future-focused learning: the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge and the much-anticipated Google Day Both events brought students from across the local area together offering hands-on experiences and inspiring insights into emerging technologies and Southern River College played a central role in making it all happen “We were absolutely thrilled to host the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge and Google Day and other skills needed in our rapidly evolving world,” Acting Principal Mr Di Filippo said “The atmosphere at the College during these events was electric and absolutely turbo-charged It was truly exciting for our students to be exposed to these emerging technologies.” The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge South Metro Heat saw 150 students from 20 primary and 20 secondary schools compete at Southern River College Year six and eight students built and raced solar-powered model cars using kits that included solar panels placed second in the Year eight division and now advances to the Western Australian Grand Final at Murdoch University next week “Building the car was great but the best part of the experience was racing the car along the track,” said Zakaria Mohsini keep working under pressure and believe in yourself.” Head of Science at Southern River College and event organiser praised the program for its real-world learning outcomes “The Synergy Schools Solar Challenge is more than just a race It’s an opportunity for students to apply their STEM knowledge in an exciting “Students experienced the thrill of competition while also learning the importance of teamwork the College welcomed 126 students from local primary schools for “Google Day” and space science made possible through the Gosnells Robotics Clubs initiative The event is part of a broader national STEM initiative by Schools Plus marked the second in a five-part series running from 2024 to 2026 designed to inspire the next generation of tech leaders in disadvantaged communities across the country including the Google Gemini model and interactive tools like the Teachable Machine They also participated in hands-on Google-led workshops and enjoyed a dynamic robotics showcase by Southern River College students The highlight of the day was a captivating presentation by astrophysicist and Superstar of STEM who shared her research on how stars are destroyed by supermassive black holes and gave students a glimpse into life as a scientist Google representatives demonstrated coding features within products like Google Photos and offered insights into the AI development process Robotics Coach and teacher at Southern River College the day was an opportunity to align curiosity with possibility “Astrophysicist Dr Adelle Goodwin captured the students’ imaginations with real radio telescope and deep space images showing black holes and the effects of tidal disruption events,” he said “Dr Goodwin captured the students’ imaginations with deep space images and real radio telescope data showing black holes,” he said “Hearing from Google experts about the coding behind AI products gave students insight into exciting new STEM careers.” Students from Ashburton Drive Primary School were especially engaged said the event made a strong classroom connection “We are currently learning about Earth and Space Science so hearing from an Astrophysicist took our understanding to a far deeper level,” he said adding that “Events like this spark curiosity and help students see how the skills they’re learning can lead to exciting futures in tech and innovation.” Year six students of Ashburton Drive Primary School shared their favourite moments Jett said he enjoyed the AI demonstrations especially seeing how Gemini could create simple games while Seth found the astrophysics presentation both accessible and mind-blowing Allegra said she was surprised by how easy it was to start using AI tools like the Teachable Machine and Claire reflected on how meeting professionals in the STEM field made a future in science feel within reach supported by Google.org’s $3 million commitment to Schools Plus aims to engage students through robotics clubs and a shared Future Ready Skills framework It also supports teachers through professional development and helps remove barriers to participation—such as covering transport costs to events like this one “This initiative shows the beauty of partnerships in action.” “STEM education is a powerful catalyst for equity Our partnership with Google enables us to bring exciting and innovative STEM learning opportunities to children in disadvantaged communities empowering them to become agile thinkers ready for today’s world and the future We’re giving students the opportunity to imagine a future within their reach.” Marie Efstathiou from Google.org Australia added “Google.org believes in building a strong digital future for Australia and that means making sure all students have the chance to learn and grow their digital skills We’re thrilled to partner with Schools Plus on this project bringing role models and real-world examples from Australia’s science and technology industry right to Southern River College Southern River College is the lead school for the Gosnells Robotics Clubs a three-year project in partnership with Thornlie SHS and local primary schools “Our involvement in these events came about because of our strong commitment to advancing future-focused learning opportunities,” said Mr Di Filippo and STAWA for offering educational opportunities for our community We look forward to many more inspirational events such as these in the future.” A 66-year-old woman and 61-year-old man from Southern River have been charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty over an alleged Pomeranian puppy farm operation The charges come after an RSPCA WA inspector visited the pair’s property in Southern River last July following a cruelty report from a WA Police detective alleging a large number of small breed dogs were in ‘poor condition’ at the home the inspector discovered 50 animals in ill-health at the residence The accused woman told the inspector she was a commercial dog breeder and owned all the dogs The inspector noted a strong smell of faeces as she approached the large kennel block on the property and observed a build-up of dog faeces in the drains outside the kennels Several Pomeranian dogs were found confined in the kennels each kennel had some water; however the floors were covered in urine the drains were clogged with fur and faeces and the dogs only had hard plastic beds with no bedding Some of the dogs showed signs of severe dental disease or poor physical health while others were spinning in their kennels some were ‘extremely fearful’ and exhibited abnormal psychological behaviours in response to the inspector’s presence The inspector estimated that there were 42 dogs at the property including two terrier-type dogs and a Chihuahua The accused woman told the RSPCA she was unsure when the dogs had last seen a vet and claimed she checked on them “every day” but had not inspected the kennels that week or fed the animals since the day before Six dogs and three cats that appeared to be in urgent need of veterinary care were surrendered to RSPCA WA that day After those nine animals were examined by RSPCA vets it became clear that their health concerns were more severe than initially thought Inspectors returned to the property to seize the remaining animals but the accused opted to surrender all of them except for six Pomeranians and two terriers All animals from the property were examined by RSPCA WA vets who found a myriad of health problems related to their alleged confinement and lack of veterinary care Two dogs sadly had to be humanely euthanised based on veterinary advice All other animals removed from the property have either been adopted or are in foster care the two accused are alleged by RSPCA WA to have caused unnecessary harm to the animals by confining them improperly failing to provide sufficient food and water and neglecting to take reasonable steps to alleviate their suffering The pair will face the Armadale Magistrates Court next Friday Animal cruelty charges carry a maximum penalty of a $50,000 fine and five years in prison As the RSPCA relies on the community to report suspected cruelty and neglect, incidents can be reported 24/7 by calling 1300 278 358 or online at rspcawa.org.au On the eve of the WA State Election this coming Saturday The Examiner has approached the candidates of both major parties for their final pitches for your vote in the seats of Cannington given that one of their parties will form Government after the poll closes Seat of Thornlie Labor the eight years fighting for Andrew Mallard who was trapped in prison for a murder he didn’t commit I was born and raised in this area and want to give back by using my experience in journalism and as the chief of staff to the Attorney General Labor is the only party that cares about doing what’s right for the electorate of Thornlie.” Seat of Thornlie Liberal candidate Mahesh Arumugam you’ll make an important decision about the future of Western Australia Take a moment to think about it – are you better off after eight years of Roger Cook and Labor we’ve seen the cost-of-living skyrocket Do our Thornlie residents and small businesses deserve better safety Do the residents of Thornlie deserve a better way of life or are we going to waste another 4 years This election is a choice: more of the same under Labor Seat of Southern River Labor candidate Terry Healy “It has been a privilege to represent the Southern River community in the Cook Labor Government for the past four years and I would be honoured to be re-elected as your local member I look forward to finishing the train line completing the Youth Plaza with the council and getting moving on the new indoor pool at Sutherlands deadline If you are disillusioned by the two major parties whoever you see fit as best able to represent your local community Goodluck to all the candidates this weekend Five top 10 tables help to settle the great debate around the Perth property market; which is superior - north or south of the Swan River While personal preferences play a large role when looking for a home for yourself investors need to consider factors like capital growth We’ve taken a deep dive into the latest data to find which suburbs currently offer the best opportunities for investors the south shone with seven entries in the top 10 the northern suburb of Bellevue that recorded the most growth Its median house sale price rose 43.4 per cent in the 12 months to the end of September The top five suburbs all recorded more than 40 per cent growth far outpacing Greater Perth’s 21.5 per cent increase Nine of the top 10 suburbs for house price growth have median sale prices well below Perth’s median of $700,000 making them attractive options for investors looking for an affordable entry-point to the market minimum 28 sales in year to Sep 2023 and to Sep 2024 While southern suburbs were in the majority on the fastest selling list it was again Bellevue that took out the top spot It recorded the fastest selling time in the three months to September with houses selling in a median of five days This list represents a wide range of price points suggesting demand is strong across the market with six suburbs making the top 10 for median rent price growth Kewdale recorded the highest growth at 34.6 per cent while Karrinyup was the top-performing northern suburb and second overall with a 34 per cent increase Greater Perth saw an 8.3 per cent increase in median weekly rent prices for houses over the same period Nine of the top 10 suburbs have weekly median rent prices above the Greater Perth median of $650 and all nine are within 15 kilometres of the Perth CBD minimum 15 leases in three months to Sep 2023 and to Sep 2024 with seven of the 10 suburbs north of the river Heathridge and Greenwood took out the first two positions with properties leasing in a median of 10 days in the three months to September Coolbellup had the shortest time on market recording a median leasing time of 11 days The southern suburbs again lead when it came to rental yields The highest yield was found in Queens Park at 6 per cent which compares to 4.8 per cent in Greater Perth All 10 suburbs had a median house sale price below the Greater Perth median of $700,000 in September and yields over 5 per cent Although the southern suburbs had the greatest representation on four of the five lists northern suburbs claimed top spot on three lists What the data shows is there are good investment opportunities available on both sides of the river While this was an interesting study of the Perth market investors need to remember that past performance isn’t a guarantee of future performance The very strong house price growth Perth has seen in the past year will moderate over the medium to longer term as the WA Government’s various initiatives to boost housing supply take effect and supply increases We have already seen the rental market ease over 2024, with the vacancy rate increasing and median rents stabilising continue to bolster demand for high-end real estate the south of the river in Perth shone with seven entries in the top 10 While Perth's southern suburbs were in the majority on the fastest selling list it was Bellevue that took out the top spot All of the top 10 suburbs had a median house sale price below the Greater Perth median of $700,000 in September and yields over 5 per cent Cath Hart was appointed CEO of REIWA in February 2022 and brings more than two with lighting the fire in Champion Lakes that threatened hundreds of homes killed livestock and caused peak hour chaos on Monday afternoon The pair of 14-year-old boys allegedly started the fire just before 4pm on a semi-rural block on Mustang Rd the pair attempted to extinguish the fire but failed Canning Vale Fire and Rescue was the first unit on the scene at 3.43pm They reported back that strong winds were whipping up flames and the fire was spreading at an alarming rate An Emergency Warning was issued to the surrounding areas with local residents told to flee to safety And the Tonkin Highway was closed and cars evacuated – many directed by police to turn around and drive the wrong way down the highway to escape the fast-moving fire Over 45 units – many from north of the river – worked into the evening to extinguish the bushfire the fire was contained and controlled and the warning was downgraded to Watch and Act But seventeen units continued to patrol the area on Tuesday with reports of a flare up near Verna Street at around 9am A Watch and Act was reissued at 10.20am as the fire burned out of control again and residents living near the fire in Gosnells and Southern River asked to prepare to leave Firefighters and aircraft worked all day on Tuesday to get the ‘unpredictable’ fire under control Aircraft had to be grounded at one point after a drone was spotted flying nearby “Drones near bushfires risk lives – let emergency crews do their job safely,” DFES said The fire has reportedly caused extensive damage to over 150 hectares of bushland and private farming area There have also been unconfirmed reports of minor structure damage to farming outbuildings and death of an unknown number of livestock The two 14-year-olds were arrested at the Armadale Police Station and have since been charged with one count each of ‘Wilfully Light Bushfire’ While the Champion Lakes blaze still burned out of control on Tuesday both boys appeared in the Perth More The Southern River Band The visceral disappointment of missing out on a live show is a feeling music fans are well accustomed to choppy audio posted haphazardly to Instagram stories by a friend of a friend - this content rarely captures the true essence of being at a gig But if you missed out on seeing Perth (Boorloo) based The Southern River Band ricochet across the UK and Europe on tour Alex Miller is giving you a second chance to experience it with his immersive debut photo book The Southern River Band Live As Fuck Across Europe And The United Kingdom For The First Time By Alex Miller Miller was invited to document The Southern River Band on their debut international Stan Qualen Tour earlier this year Miller describes the tour as “a pivotal moment “I’ve done countless tours around Australia with these idiots,” Miller reflects “but it’s wild to be on the other side of the planet and see them exceed their goal of being the biggest band in Thornlie.” Miller says the attitude of the band is unchanged: “It’s literally the same gig for them; they’re unstoppable.” No matter that they’re no longer playing in Perth’s southeast at Thornlie Tavern and instead selling out shows at medieval English castles The gig at Warwick Castle in the UK’s Midlands was the most memorable for Miller “It was the most fun but challenging venue to shoot The placement of stage/crowd/castle seemed like it would work but trying to include all the architecture in the background was tricky.” This location also produced “the most powerful moment” Miller documented on the tour It was a shot of the band’s drummer “Tyler ‘The Hawk’ Ray Michie rocking up to and sound checking at Warwick Castle in his flag shirt,” Miller says “He is of Arrernte descent and it was so badass walking through the gates of a 1000 year old castle with him proudly repping the flag That needed a whole double page spread alone in the book.” All the photos featured in the book were shot on Miller’s Canon 5D Mark III “It’s been dropped from great heights and had beer poured all over it multiple times but is still kicking I haven’t fully gone to the small mirrorless cameras yet because holding a brick is more comfortable for some reason.” Regardless of the tour antics the camera has been through capturing over 30,000 photos across the two months “It took a few long nights of culling down to the good stuff,” Miller says of the book’s creative process printed off about 800 A4 sheets of photos at Officeworks and threw them all on the floor to put together like a big jigsaw puzzle.” Getting the visuals right for the book was crucial to Miller who “wanted to make it look like a travel document instead of a shiny coffee table book” “When I was in Copenhagen airport I started making a made up passport stamp with SRB’s logo on my laptop probably not the best place to be photoshopping the UK/European customs stamps,” Miller admits “Over the next couple of weeks I made the cover design and got a big wood block stamp made which I'll use on all of the book covers and numbering for each edition.” The physical book is not the only slice of the tour fans can get their hands on with Miller collecting assorted ephemera from across the UK and Europe Miller says memorabilia on offer includes “the horse head that Cal rode out on stage at Warwick Castle red confetti from when Patty and I watched Avril Lavigne front row at Rock Werchter He does confess that his Berghain wristband will be tricky to part with And after providing such expansive documentation of the tour fans should be okay with letting him keep at least one memento Preorders for ‘The Southern River Band Live As Fuck Across Europe And The United Kingdom For The First Time By Alex Miller’ open on 3 October, and can be ordered through Alex Miller’s website here. rock outfit The Southern River Band are slowly floating back down to earth after having completed their first tour of Europe The Perth rockers played at huge festivals alongside some of rock’s biggest names such as Alice Cooper Megadeth and Australia’s own Parkway Drive Southern River Band’s lead singer Callum Kramer said it was the buzz to end all buzzes finally getting to meet their overseas fans for the first time who well and truly showed the Perth rockers their appreciation “They absolutely f**king loved it,” he said The crowd were almost louder than the band at some of the shows “Getting that roar as you walk on stage makes you feel like you can run through a goddamn wall,” Cal said with a laugh Cal and the band said touring overseas for the first time is something they will never forget “At our own (overseas) shows we were doing anywhere from 300-500 people and 85 per cent of those shows sold out ahead of time so we knew we were going be in for some rippers “We were lucky enough to get on some great festivals too at Sweden Rock Festival we played in front of about 25,000 people Rock Werchter (Belgium) we had about 10,000 and Down The Rabbit Hole (Netherlands) was the same “We’re mega stoked about those guys giving us a shot and I’m pretty sure that the punters there were stoked too There’s a video on Youtube of our full set at Rock Werchter if you want to check it out.” The Southern River Band is no stranger to doing the long haul when it comes to touring having spent the past 10 years on the road playing wherever they could get a gig Cal Kramer said driving across Europe was a mind-blowing experience for the band “You can drive the distance from here to Geraldton and be in a new country speaking a completely different language by the time you get there which is a total spin out to a guy like me who’s lived in Thornlie his whole life,” he said “Obviously there’s shitloads more people over there which makes getting in a van and going from city to city for two months straight far more viable than it is here that’s exactly what we’re doing here in Australia for our ‘D.I.Y’ tour next month.” the band also proved that they are still as popular as ever with their home-grown audience attracting a huge crowd in Adelaide before heading back home to Perth “Our new record ‘D.I.Y’ is out on CVA August 16th and we’re doing another hot lap of Australia to celebrate “Think the tour starts at the end of August and wraps up at the start of October one at Magnet House in Perth and one at Freo Social You can get tickets to them and preorder the album (on vinyl or CD) but as they (me) always say: There’s no place like Thornlie,” he said A 66-year-old woman and 61-year-old man have each been charged with 23 counts of animal cruelty over an alleged Pomeranian puppy farm operation The couple were charged following the discovery of 50 animals in ill-health at their Southern River property An RSPCA WA inspector attended the property in July after receiving a cruelty report from a WA Police Detective alleging a large number of small breed dogs in ‘poor condition’ at the couple’s home The female accused told the inspector she was a commercial dog breeder and owned all of the dogs “The inspector noted a strong smell of faeces as she approached the large kennel block on the property and saw a build-up of dog faeces in the drains outside of the kennels Multiple Pomeranians were confined in the kennels either by themselves or in groups of up to four and they had dirty matted coats,” the RSPCA said in a statement “There was a large bucket of water inside each kennel the drains at the back of the kennels were clogged with fur and faeces and the dogs only had access to hard plastic beds without any bedding “Some of the dogs appeared to have significant dental disease or were in poor body condition some were spinning inside their kennels which indicated concerning neurological conditions and some were extremely fearful and displayed abnormal psychological behavioural reactions to the inspector’s presence.” The inspector approximated there were 42 dogs – including two terrier-type dogs and a Chihuahua – at the property “The accused advised she was unsure of the last time the dogs had been seen by a vet and she checked on the animals ‘every day’ but had not checked on the kennels yet that week nor fed them since the day before.” Seven of the animals were surrendered to RSPCA WA that day and the woman advised she would take the remainder to the vet She failed to do so and the remaining animals were all either seized or surrendered days later Vets examined all animals from the property which presented with a myriad of health problems related to their alleged confinement and lack of adequate veterinary care All animals have either been adopted or continue to recover in foster care RSPCA WA will allege they were cruel to the animals in that they did not provide them with sufficient food and water and could have alleviated their harm by taking reasonable steps The maximum penalty for a charge of animal cruelty is a $50,000 fine and five years in prison The matter will be heard on December 13th at Armadale Magistrates Court The RSPCA relies on the community to report incidents of suspected cruelty and neglect. now has a new layer of protection from the state’s top office.   While calling the Duck River a “scenic treasure,” Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed an executive order that should help protect the waterway from the increasing impacts of local overdevelopment.  If and only if we think wisely about how we conserve our natural resources will our children and our grandchildren be able to paddle establishes the Duck River Watershed Planning Partnership which will develop water management recommendations and engage with local communities and stakeholders The partnership is directed to balance water resource management “Today’s executive order sets the stage for commonsense safeguards and is a first step toward ensuring that the Duck River is better protected from intensifying development pressures and changing weather patterns,” SELC Tennessee Office Director George Nolan said “Tennesseans should be immensely proud to have this one-of-a-kind river in their backyards and we are thankful that Governor Lee is working on ways to protect it.”  “If and only if we think wisely about how we conserve our natural resources will our children and our grandchildren be able to paddle these rivers and fish these rivers and tag mussels in these rivers,” Governor Lee said in a video statement that accompanied the order.    The governor’s executive order comes after years of advocacy and legal action from SELC and its partners The Duck River is one of the most biodiverse rivers in the world supporting hundreds of types of aquatic life including popular sport fish like smallmouth bass and rainbow trout and a staggering 62 species of freshwater mussels.  The waterway’s incredible wildlife – along with its scenic views and thriving sport fisheries – make it the key piece of the region’s local economies The river supports an estimated 150,000 anglers growing the area’s booming outdoor recreation industry According to the Outdoor Industry Association outdoor recreation generated more than $11 billion statewide in 2022.    The Duck River also supplies drinking water to more than 250,000 people in Middle Tennessee, supporting local businesses that rely on access to clean water.   “Along with its natural beauty and incredible wealth of wildlife the Duck River is the backbone of local economies throughout Middle Tennessee this order gets us closer to ensuring that both the river and nearby communities can continue to thrive for years to come,” Nolan said.  The executive order comes as the Duck River is feeling increasing pressure from rapid local development and extreme droughts—impacts that landed it on a list of the nation’s most endangered rivers earlier this year.   local water utilities have proposed to dramatically increase the amount of water they take from the Duck River the proposals could lead to an additional 19 million gallons of water being pumped from the river each day.   recent droughts have taken a toll on the waterway This summer’s extreme drought conditions caused flows in the Duck River to reach record lows imperiling aquatic wildlife and the health of the river itself.  one of the state’s top experts on freshwater mussels waded through the water to survey the damage that drought inflicted on the Duck’s mussel populations.  Mussels are the workhorses of our waterways filtering pollution and sediment out of rivers and streams so fish and other types of aquatic life can thrive But Hubbs said they are also the “canaries in the coal mines” for rivers experiencing stress—they are the first species to go when a river is struggling and the last species to come back.   Hubbs found more than 560 dead mussels that had been stranded on the Duck’s banks due to low water levels a few months earlier in July it took less than a half hour to fill up a bag with dead mussels “They’re left high and dry, if they can’t move to the water or they can’t burrow down to it, then they get desiccated and they’re gone,” Hubbs told local reporters at the time.   The governor’s new executive order calls on state leaders to identify opportunities for habitat conservation—including habitat for mussels—and directs them to take wildlife impacts into account when making decisions around the Duck River.  While the governor’s order focuses primarily on the Duck River it acknowledges that actions taken on the Duck can provide a blueprint for similar conservation efforts in watersheds statewide that have been struggling with increasing water pollution problems more than 60 percent of Tennessee’s rivers and streams are listed as ‘impaired,’ meaning they are too polluted to support their basic functions.   From wetlands in the West to mountain streams in the East Tennessee’s waterways are at a critical crossroads this order can serve as an example that can be put in place in other watersheds and we look forward to working with the state to identify ways this can improve and protect our waterways,” Nolan added The order itself lays the groundwork for these opportunities by directing state agencies to identify other watersheds where the order could be replicated.   “The way that we conserve these rivers is crucial in the years ahead,” Governor Lee said.   The mission of the Southern Environmental Law Center is to protect the basic right to clean air and a livable climate; to preserve our region's natural treasures Despite all this, “Detroit-style pizza cooked by a Palestinian former banker in a Southern River grocery store” wasn’t something I had on my 2024 bingo card. “The rolls were nice, but they weren’t great,” said al Sweilem, who launched Detroit Square Pies in November. “I wouldn’t eat them every day. But Detroit-style pizza? I could eat that every hour. Seriously, I love it.” While I’m impressed by al Sweilem’s enthusiasm, I personally would struggle putting away Detroit-style pizza (or any single dish) every hour. Detroit-style pizza, for the uninitiated, is a regional American style of pizza notable for its rectangular shape, thick puffy crust and not-insignificant quantities of cheese including, crucially, the crisp lacy cheese bunting wrapped around each pizza’s edge. 14/20ReviewSunny by name, sunny by nature: Tender-hearted eatery brings Japanese cafe culture to an unlikely Perth locationAlthough Detroit-style pizza has been around since the mid-1940s it hit the big-time a decade ago after Detroit pizza chef Shawn Randazzo was named world champion pizza maker at the 2012 World Pizza Expo in Las Vegas and started using “Detroit-style” to describe what he and so many locals simply knew as pizza Perth – and indeed Palestine – might be a long way from Motor City but that didn’t deter al Sweilem from diving headfirst into all things Detroit and delicious After a year spent developing and trialling recipes (Randazzo’s teachings were a constant presence in al Sweilem’s journey) our man felt he had something unusual and delicious that would resonate with Perth eaters A Detroit-style pie is an imposing rectangle of cheese (a house blend consisting mainly of mozzarella and brick cheese: a white American cheddar) and dough your standard-issue Naples-style woodfired pizza – the pizzas here are eight inches by 10 inches: the traditional dimensions of the blue steel workshop trays that these pizzas were originally baked in – a significant hunk of puffy focaccia-style crumb is hiding below that molten cheese surface I wouldn’t recommend eating one on your own unless you had just broken some sort of CrossFit record While Southern River is far from Motor City al Sweilem’s pizzas are a faithful rendition of a “Detroit-style” pie.Max VeenhuyzenAdvertisementHaving said all that the dough here is wonderfully light rather than stodgy and dense: a result of a long 72-hour ferment to lighten and aerate the dough The bases are then shaped individually in each tray and get a final eight-hour rise before they’re ready to be baked which explains why our man preps just 80 pizzas a day with zero plans to increase production On weekends when he offers the pizzas for lunchtime While there is an excellent margherita on offer – note the two tyre-mark-like stripes of marinara sauce on the margherita: a nod to Detroit’s automotive history – Detroit Square Pies isn’t afraid to do things its way Barbecue sauce is squiggled onto many a pie There are also two sweet pizzas made using Ferrero Rocher and spiced Biscoff spread God – whatever you call her/him/they/it –
