The Flyers are set for a seventh season in the WNBL following the confirmation the league will have new owners for the 2025-26 season
The league’s transfer to the new ownership group followed months of negotiations between the clubs
the focus was on the growth and success of the competition
with clubs wanting to ensure the success is shared with the basketball community to help continue to build the game in Australia
said it was important for the Flyers to continue in the WNBL as it is all about the athletes and the game
“This is certainly not a business decision
but a commitment to women’s sport and what is best for the players to ensure they receive the recognition they deserve as world-class athletes.”
Gerry has a genuine passion for supporting athletes and has been a supporter of women’s sport and women’s basketball in Australia for over 30 years
he was the major sponsor of Dandenong Rangers in the WNBL between 1997 and 2019
and he became the owner and Jayco the naming rights sponsor of Southside Flyers
Jayco was also the major sponsor of the Australian Opals and the entire Australian women’s national basketball program for eight years from 2010
“I am pleased to maintain this support through the Flyers
and inspire the next generation of young girls through visible role models they can look up to and dream of becoming
“We can now focus on building a team for the upcoming season and continuing to develop the players and everyone involved with the Flyers,” he added
The playing roster for the 2025-26 season will be announced in the coming weeks
starting with the re-signing of players from last season before the WNBL Free Agency period commences in mid-May
In the spirit of reconciliation the WNBL acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land

The heavy metal art collective is among the many colorful arts endeavors stretching people’s imaginations that are centered on the May Day festivities around Powderhorn Park

the Southside Battletrain will be part of the May Day parade going down Bloomington Avenue from 28th to 34th Street starting at noon

Home Newsroom Two generations supported at Carinity Education Southside
When Renee Baker left Carinity Education Southside after graduating from high school
little did she know that 15 years later she would return as the mother of a student
Renee enrolled at the all-girls special assistance school in Brisbane after moving out of home as a teenager
I wasn’t living with my parents at that time,” Renee said
“Normal schools didn’t understand that I had appointments with Centrelink or I had my own doctor’s appointments
This school was more understanding of those sorts of things
and had youth workers that would help you out
“The meals provided by the school and the out-of-school activities were always great
We weren’t just going on a normal excursion
“They also had the creche here
Things like that help a lot of the young women who are disadvantaged in society.”
Renee graduated from Year 12 at Carinity Education Southside in 2007
and her daughter Elisha was born the following year
Renee has returned to the school – after Elisha enrolled there
“When I first walked back in the gates I was like
because the school definitely looked different,” Renee said
the office is where the library used to be
But not much has changed with the way the school does like to help our youth.”
Carinity Education Southside was the first alternate schooling option Renee considered for Elisha when she realised her daughter was having difficulties in a public school
she’s completely turned around with both her schooling and her personality,” Renee said
“She was struggling and she didn’t want to help herself
but now she’s the first person to help anybody.”
Renee says Carinity Education Southside has “got the good mix between schoolwork and helping the students”
“If I didn’t find Southside I probably would have dropped out of school
and I definitely wouldn’t have completed my senior education
“This school definitely provides you with the tools to help you succeed.”

Let’s pack the stands and show the Fire what the Flyers family is all about
It has been a disappointing season with several injuries impacting the Flyers season and interrupting continuity for individual players and the team
As we head into the pointy end of the Cygnett WNBL Season
the good news with the expected return of Carley Ernst
has been offset by an injury to our Captain
who sustained a hamstring injury in Townsville on Saturday night
Bec will join Mikki Vaughn on the sidelines for the remainder of the season
Below is an update on the status of several players who have sustained injuries in recent weeks
Carley Ernst has been working extremely hard on her recovery from a back injury sustained following training the game against Bendigo earlier this season and is set to return to the court in the next two weeks
Carley has made significant progress in her rehab
and the determination displayed to get back on court and she is on track to make a full recovery
We’re all excited that we will get to see her back in action and contributing to the team once she’s fully fit and ready
Nikita Young is expected to make a recovery from an ankle injury she sustained during training in the lead-up to the game against Townsville on January 4
The good news is that Nikita is hoping to return for our Round 13 game against the Capitals on January 25
Her positive outlook and determined work in rehabilitation have contributed to her returning to the court
and we’re all looking forward to seeing her back in action soon
Bec Cole suffered a hamstring injury during our Round 11 game against Townsville when she appeared to slip on the large decal in the key
it has been confirmed that Bec will be out for the remainder of the season
Bec has been a standout leader and has put together some incredible performances on the court throughout the season
The entire team and coaching staff wish her a speedy recovery and full rehabilitation
Mikki Vaughn has been sidelined with an Achilles injury in recent weeks
Mikki worked her way through the injury but suffered a setback in the last game of the year against Sydney on December 30
it has been determined that Mikki will be unable to return for the remainder of the season
and we know the team and fans will miss her on the court
The injuries to key players have certainly been challenging
but we’re confident that each of these athletes will continue to show their resilience as they work towards recovery
The team is supporting them every step of the way
and we know that our injured players will return stronger than ever
The Flyers are very fortunate to have the support from a wonderful medical team who continue to provide the very best treatment and support for the players
with the priority always being the well-being of the athletes

the Spirit and the Flyers have faced each other twice
These closely contested games highlight the competitive nature of this rivalry
The battle between the backcourts will be essential
Whitcomb’s scoring ability against Cole’s defensive skills could determine the game’s outcome
Fans can anticipate a high-energy game with both teams eager to assert dominance

Perth Lynx did plenty right on Wednesday night despite the eventual WNBL loss to the Bendigo Spirit but now there can’t be any let up in effort at home to the Southside Flyers on Saturday night
The Lynx were leading by as much as 12 points with top spot on the line on Wednesday night in Bendigo before giving up 30 points in the fourth quarter to end up losing by nine
That means that Perth does stay in second position in the WNBL with a 12-4 record
but it’s two losses now behind the league-leading Spirit and only one loss ahead of the third placed Townsville Fire
That makes it a tight race now in the run home for a top two finish making every game important for the Lynx to not slip up to remain second and that starts on Saturday night against the Flyers
It’s the last of three game of the season also for the Lynx at the Perth High Performance Centre and while the Flyers are struggling having lost their last four
Perth can’t afford to take anything for granted in the Grand Final rematch
Southside will be without Bec Cole and Mikki Vaughn now for the rest of the season while still without Nikita Young and Carley Ernst on Saturday night
it’s still a Flyers team who competed hard to lose by just 10 points in Townsville last Saturday with Naz Hillmon delivering 27 points and 11 rebounds
and Alice Kunek nine points and three rebounds
Following Wednesday night’s tough loss in Bendigo
Perth now can’t afford a slip up against the Flyers on Saturday night to maintain their hold on second position with Townsville breathing right down their necks
“We’ve been probably thinking ahead for a little while now and once you get to that 11
12 win number you can start doing that,” coach Ryan Petrik said
“That was a bit of a problem on Sunday where the girls might have been thinking ahead to Bendigo versus focusing on the Geelong game
“We’ve been looking at Bendigo and Townsville for a while
and what we think can beat them come playoff time
“We’ve been planning and preparing for Townsville and Bendigo for a long time
and people have just been talking Perth and Bendigo
but Townsville are only one win behind us and have a new import
“There really is the big three so we need to keep winning to try and stay second
but in the coaches room a lot of our thinking is about Townsville and Bendigo.”
Looking back on Wednesday’s top of the table clash with Bendigo
Petrik saw plenty of positives especially with 14 second chance points to six
what ultimately counts is the score and the Spirit went 15/29 from three to the 9/32 from the Lynx
and overall shot 48 per cent from the field opposed to 37
there was still a lot for the Lynx to take out of it when the disappointment of losing wore off for Petrik
“We did a really good job for 30 odd minutes but they were the best team on the planet in the fourth,” Petrik said
“Full credit to Bendigo but there’s plenty of positives and normally if you are going to take 11 more field goal than they are
you’re going to shoot seven more free-throws than they do
you’re going to get six more offensive rebounds than they do
and you’re going to turn the ball over times less than they do
“That’s pretty crazy but the reality is they go 6/7 from three in the fourth and good luck beating them
They were fantastic in the fourth quarter and just too good in the end.”

The Jayco Southside Flyers fell short to the Townsville Fire on Saturday evening to a three on the buzzer from Abbey Ellis which assisted the Fire to a 78-75 win
the Flyers hoped to secure their 5th win of the 2024/25 Cygnett WNBL season when they faced the Fire for the first time
The game became another close one as the first quarter proved to be tight and physical between the two
Naz Hillmon assisted the Flyers to a handy 6-point lead mid-way through the first
The Fire were able to reign in the deficit after an 11-0 run which gave them a narrow 22-20 lead heading into the second
Ellis started the second dangerously from beyond the arc
splashing 2 from deep early to extend the Fire’s lead to 10 points
Alice Kunek and Tera Reed tried their best to chip away at the Fire’s lead throughout the quarter however
the scoring prowess and quickness in transition from the Fire proved way too strong as they held a 10-point lead at the half
Momentum swung the Flyers’ way to begin the third and sharpshooters Kunek and Dallas Loughridge converted from long range in succession which cut the Fire’s lead back to 3 points
Loughridge continued to be a power force in offense throughout the quarter to cut the margin to 5 points heading into the final term
The Fire looked to be running away with their lead in the last
Hillmon and Maddy Rocci kept the Flyers in touch with the Fire and narrowed the margin once again
A clutch three from Kunek and a crucial basket under the ring from Hillmon tied the game with 5 seconds remaining
Coach Seebohm called a timeout to draw up one final play which was executed to precision with Ellis splashing a three on the buzzer to give the Fire a 3-point win

While we didn’t enjoy the on-court success this season
thanks to the support from our incredible members and supporters
it was another entertaining and exciting Flyers WNBL season
We were unable to enjoy the number of victories we were all hoping for
but there were many close games and a great atmosphere at the State Basketball Centre with the Flyers Family in fine voice
It was great to celebrate with a victory over Adelaide in front of the Flyers fans in our final home game and then to finish the season with another victory in Sydney was a deserved finish for the team
the development of several players throughout the season
in particular Dallas Loughridge and Manuela Pouch
was very pleasing and a great sign for the future
“Everyone is disappointed we didn’t get more wins and that we are not playing finals and that is something we will continue to work on
the support and noise at our home games is incredible
and it is fantastic to be part of the Flyers Family,” Kristi Harrower said after the final home game
At the small team lunch held following the final game of the season
player awards were presented in recognition of the individual performances during the season

The Perth Lynx open their 2024/25 WNBL season with two home games at Bendat Basketball Centre beginning on Saturday night against the Southside Flyers
The Lynx will play host to the Flyers on Saturday night with tip-off set for 7pm at Bendat Basketball Centre in what is a rematch of last year’s WNBL Grand Final series to open the new season for both clubs
From the Lynx team that played in that Grand Final series
Ally Wilson and Kiara Waite are on board with Teige Morrell now joining the full roster as of this season
Then there is co-captains Anneli Maley and Amy Atwell along with Alex Ciabattoni
Steph Gorman and Miela Goodchild all back on deck
they have a new coach with Kristi Harrower replacing Cheryl Chambers while Alice Kunek
Paige Burrows and Tayah Burrows are among their new faces
It might be a Grand Final rematch on Saturday night
but given the amount of time that has now passed since and with the significant changes to both squads
that’s the last thing that will be on Lynx coach Ryan Petrik’s mind this week
“I can only speak on behalf of myself and I couldn’t care less that it’s them we are playing in the first game,” Petrik said
“I get along really well with Bec Cole and Alice Kunek
and I know they beat us in that Grand Final
they have a vastly different team and even have a new coach so it’s all very different
“We could win this game by 1000 points but they will still be last season’s champions and so they should be
I’m not going to spend a second about this being a revenge match or anything on that side of things
“The players might feel differently and I certainly get the romance of it from a crowd and fan engagement point of view
but from a head coach point of view I won’t spend a second thinking about it.”
While Petrik is glad to be starting the season with two home games over the next week firstly on Saturday against the Flyers and then on Wednesday against the Townsville Fire
it’s anything but a way of easing into the season
Taking on the last two championship winning teams first up is being thrown right in the deep end and even though Petrik is looking forward to hitting the road with this group to quick up the chemistry building process
he’s excited for the Perth fans to see their team in action
“We certainly never seem to start the season with an easy one
we always seem to play a championship favourite in one of the first games,” Petrik said
“This time it’s back to back and it is what it is
It’s also nice to hit the road early and get some chemistry built on the road especially for us this season
we haven’t travelled and didn’t have any pre-season games on the road so haven’t had a real chance to get on the road and travel
“Now that this is my 10th year in the WNBL and those road trip really do matter because you’re forced to interact with each other wherever you go all day
“There’s just little collisions everywhere that allows you to form bonds
“Because we’ve been at home we haven’t been able to have that chance
so starting home or away both have their advantages
but we’d like to be better in sync and that’s going to come in time
“We hope to play some good basketball first up in front of our home fans
but no one will be at their best this early on.”
The Lynx won’t quite be at full strength for the season-opener with the absence of Atwell who had a stunning off-season getting the chance to play in the WNBA and also be part of the Australian Opals campaign at Paris 2024
she is the only player unavailable to take on the Flyers with the recently married Goodchild good to go after an injury shortly after joining pre-season training
“Atwell will be an out at least for this first game against Southside,” Petrik said
“She will miss that game at this stage and Miela missed a good chunk of pre-season
but she’s back now and has peaked perfectly for the season to start this week.”

Bec was joined at the Waverley Falcons in the NBL1 South by Flyers’ teammate Carley Ernst and enjoyed a very successful ‘off season’ winning the NBL1 South and NBL1 National Championships
but Bec will not be leaving anything to chance in the quest for another Championship with the Flyers
“We certainly have a big challenge and there will be no resting on our efforts of last season
so we have a lot of work to be do,” Bec added
Bec is also the Ambassador for Lymphoma Australia
working closely with the organisation to build awareness and advocacy campaigns to support their work
Bec is also enjoying a number of roles in the media and the Flyers family is sure to support her in her quest to blaze a trail in the media
Keep a close look out for Bec Cole on and off the court this WNBL season
Dallas Loughridge has committed to the team for a further two seasons
Dallas is looking forward to playing a bigger role with the team in the new season and is excited to have the opportunity to play under new coach Kristi Harrower
“I am really looking forward to the new season and working with Kristi who I have enjoyed speaking to about the team and our ongoing development
I know I have to continue to work on the development of my game and believe I have a fantastic opportunity here at the Flyers,” Dallas said this week
After having to sit out her first season in the WNBL due to injury
Dallas has had to work extremely hard to get back to her best and is now ready to display the form in the WNBL that she showed in the Australian junior teams before injuring her knee
But while her friends were at parties on the weekend
national championships and preparing for her debut season
Followed categories will be added to My News
The VCE student spent her final year of school juggling her studies
playing national and school championships and signing with her first professional sports team in the WNBL
I don’t think any 17-year-old at that time would probably be thinking about all of this happening at once.” Puoch told Code Sports after completing her final VCE exams
“I think there’s been a new thing every month
I’m like ‘yeah I’m down.’
“It’s keeping me entertained.”
Always with a dream to play in the elite league
especially after cheering on her older sister
a Flyers champion player and now UC Capitals rising star Nyadiew
admits she didn’t expect it to happen all at once
“My first thought was that next year would be my time
and that this year I’d just focus on finishing school,” she said
“But when Southside reached out to me and said they’d support me with my exams
Finishing VCE while training for the top tier league was no easy feat for someone who never wanted to miss a beat
I don’t want to miss anything and when they said ‘that’s ok’ that’s when I wanted to sign,” The Flyers rookie said
which was a bit too much but I took it in and thought after all this
“I had to take a step back (from basketball) which was really hard for me but Southside really did help me
they understood putting my education first.”
But sacrificing the social scene of a year 12 student on the other hand wasn’t a bother for the teenager
“I’m not really a party person
and everyone would be like ‘c’mon come to this and that’ and I’d be like nah I’d rather go to a basketball game or training,” Puoch said
“Then they’d say I’m so boring but it’s the game I love
known for their advanced sports program and who fully supported Puoch’s demanding schedule
“I’d go to school in the morning
Not just her and her sister taking on the sports scene
who all breathe the same competitive spirit
and says the game has kept her big family “together on and off the court.”
And she credits all their sporting talent to their mum
who religiously played sport when she was growing up in Africa
crazy and never a dull moment,” Puoch said
you’ll hear them and see them at the sideline
“The game against my sister (Nyadiew)
they were wearing Capitals and Flyers stuff and it was just like wow
that’s what makes us so close as a family.”
She’s hit the court on just three occasions so far this season with her managed load
but the rookie has patience and plenty of time on her side
not everything is going to go my way but I’m learning
but every minute that I’m on and off the court
I’m learning from the girls and Kristi (coach Kristi Harrower) not just about how to develop my game but also the professionalism
“I can feel myself developing more and more.”
While she locks herself into WNBL full time for the rest of the season
Manny has sights on following the steps of Nyadiew
with goals of donning the green and gold and going international
“I’d love to represent Australia one day.”
it’s every little kid’s dream.”
further studies remain a priority for the recently graduated
I’m going to study something to keep me going
“I’m not sure what it is yet but hopefully by the end of the year I’ll know what to do
The Southside Flyers host Bendigo Spirit this Sunday at the State Basketball Centre
the WNBL faces a real battle to grow the game says basketball great Phil Smyth
All Adelaide Lightning players have been released from their contracts as the prospect of a WNBL season without a South Australian club reaches the state’s highest level of government
A seven team WNBL26 season could be a strong reality
with officials expecting South Australia’s most successful sporting franchise
The WNBL salary cap will grow by almost $200,000 and the minimum wage will double over the life of a landmark new collective bargaining agreement
After months of negotiation between new ownership and WNBL clubs
declaring the next era ‘a crucial step’ in unlocking basketball’s full potential
The JackJumpers wasted no time signing a new guard under NBL free agency

The Flyers welcome Paige Burrows to the team for the 2024/25 WNBL season
Paige enjoyed a successful NBL1 season with Knox Raiders and was a Development Player with the Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL last season
Paige was a member of the 2023 Australian Under 19 National team at the U19 World Cup in Spain
she joins the Flyers as a Development Player and is determined to forge a career in the WNBL

Kristi Harrower worked with Paige at the Boomers last season and knows what a quality person she is and believes she has a bright future
“Development of individual players and the team is a focus for the Flyers going forward and having worked with Paige last season I know how hard she works and the determination she has to continue to improve her game
I also know what a quality young person she is
and we are about people with good character
“Our goal is for Paige to continue to develop her game and be part of the Flyers roster next season
That is what the Development Player position is about
the opportunity to work with the best players and secure a roster spot in the future,” Kristi said
Paige made her WNBL debut with the Deakin Melbourne Boomers in season 2022 and shined on the 2023 Australian Under 19 National Team at the U19 FIBA World Cup in Spain
She was also crowned Knox Raiders Player of the Year in 2023
A quote from Paige in an interview last season is an example of her determination to continue to improve on and off the court
“My advice to younger athletes would be to not go through the motions
if you want to get better you have to do the work,” Paige said when asked about advice for young athletes

https://www.metrosouth.health.qld.gov.au/about-us/news/pa-hospital/pa-southside-clinical-unit-celebrates-decades-of-commitment-to-medical-training
The final PAH Medical Grand Rounds for 2024 hosted a celebration of service to thank some of the retiring physicians who have contributed to clinical teaching through the PA-Southside Clinical Unit for many years
University of Queensland (UQ) Medical School Dean
Associate Professor Claire Ellender hosted the celebration noting that it was a pleasure to publicly acknowledge these colleagues for enabling many to learn from their experience
Prof Scott has been a long serving member of the PA-Southside Clinical Unit
He commenced as a Registrar in 1986 and has been committed to clinical teaching since then providing a breadth of clinical knowledge for FRACP trainees. He has championed clinical reasoning throughout the many iterations of the medical program but was always steadfast on diagnostic accuracy and the importance of medical history including a focus on deprescribing and clinical epidemiology
He continues his research directions into clinical AI and is applauded for his commitment to the College and to UQ
It has been my great pleasure to mentor students
I would like to specifically mention the stroke certification received this week - I just wanted to make the point that the stroke specialty started in general medicine with Graham Hall
Phil Aitken and Richard Boyle many years ago
Prof Upham’s research has been pivotal in the modern management of asthma
Without the clinical science that has been translated by research groups like John’s
patients with severe asthma would not have access to the lifesaving biological therapies that we know are routinely prescribed today
John has been a long-standing contributor to Year Three teaching and has conducted over 500 long cases over the last 20 years
John’s passion for respiratory medicine has been transferred into the new UQ medical course and the respiratory system now comprises the first eight weeks of the first year as a secure foundation
John was also president of the thoracic society of Australia and New Zealand during a difficult time 2021-2024
he steered the respiratory community through the pandemic while contributing to UQ and to the broader health system in Australia
John is retiring from clinical work and his role as the Executive Director of Metro South Health Research
“I have had a full and rewarding career of clinical care of patients
I can look back on my career with gratitude and a certain sense of excitement as well.”
Dr Eley has been the Research Manager at the PAH Emergency Department for over 12 years
His career started as a charted biologist and agricultural scientist including several years in Kenya; however
he shifted focus in 2003 when he moved to Australia and joined UQ as a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Rural and Remote Health. From 2015-20
he held the position of graduate coordinator for the PA-Southside Clinical Unit
One of Rob’s many achievements was supervising six PhD students. He has championed allied health research but also championed medical officers building on their research capabilities and translating that into their day-to-day care
remains an honorary researcher with UQ to continue supervising the next generation of clinician researchers
“Who would have thought that a career that started with hands up cows’ bottoms would end up as the Emergency Department Research Manager
I must acknowledge the vision of Michael Sinnott in setting up this research manager position along with the support of David Wilkinson in the school
the phenomenal support of Andrew and James and Phil in bringing me into the ED with encouragement to do the things I have done which were different than what was traditionally done.”
Michael has been a passionate medical educator at the PAH and UQ for over 20 years; he has taught over 1000 students in the art and skill of the medical long case
His passion for clear clinical history taking and commitment to clinical reasoning has ensured generations of current and future colleagues have this important skill at the end of their training
Michael has continued to work at the PAH Neurology Department and has a large private medical practice at Greenslopes
but a highlight of his career has been a passion for ensuring equity of access to quality medical sub specialty care by regularly attending rural and regional clinics across Queensland
This is incredibly important for our state and important for our university as we seek to ensure geography is no impediment to accessing high quality care
Students attest that you have instilled this important message about equity of access
Michael is stepping back from teaching but will continue his clinical work where he will no doubt continue to influence the next generation of clinicians
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity to teach people for so long. They say that we see further by standing on the shoulders of giants and I think Ian Scott who was my first medical consultant 27 years ago.”
Leo is stepping down from his role in the PA-Southside Clinical Unit; however
he will continue the Critical Care Course teaching and clinical work at PAH ICU
Leo has been a pivotal advocate for the inclusion of simulation in the course and medical education more broadly
he has contributed evidence to the importance of clinical simulation of doctors and other healthcare professionals
Leo steered students through the choppy waters of COVID exclusions and successfully navigated a new curriculum for two years
the PA-Southside Clinical Unit is in a strong position ensuring we had a defined staffing structure and a clear way forward to ensure PA is well placed to be one of the key contributors to the medical program
“I was driven to medical education because I felt poorly prepared for internship and one of the key motivators for me was that interns that follow could have a better experience if they were better prepared than I was
a friend had come back from Harvard where they did medical simulation and it was at a time when Queensland had just built the biggest skills development centre – the biggest simulation centre - in the southern hemisphere so there was floor space and equipment
we set up the first interdisciplinary simulation program in the world in Intensive Care and got to see those lightbulb moments for trainees
I wanted to bring that experience to undergraduates
I helped set up the training program and delivered it to about 250 students a year for three to four years
Federal money then brokered an agreement between five health services and the University of Queensland to set up a program that was delivered for almost 15 years to all the UQ students in their final year. It will hopefully continue for the coming years but we are yet to see what role simulation will play in the new program
While in the role as Head of the Clinical Unit
I got to understand the extent of research and academia that was happening at PA Hospital and that was eye opening for me as a long serving regular clinician
highly able researchers and NHMRC grant winners who truly deserved recognition across the campus
Headed by Associate Professor Claire Ellender
the PA-Southside Clinical Unit helps train about 200 students from across years three and four of the medical program every year
PA-Southside Clinical Unit is highly integrated with three Queensland Health hospitals:

The 2024/25 Cygnett WNBL season starts in Perth for the Flyers with a rematch of last season’s Grand Final series against Perth Lynx
While it is a so called ‘rematch’ it is a completely different Flyers team to the one that took out the Championship in March
The Flyers have made six changes to the roster
together with a new coach and new assistant coach
Tayah Burrows and Manuela Puoch will wear the Flyers colours for the first time
with another recruit Tera Reed sitting out the game with an ankle injury
She will make her Flyers debut in Thursday’s game away game against Geelong United
or next Saturday night in the Flyers first home game of the season

ESPN's Megan Hustwaite brings together news stories that have caught her eye across the WNBL
ESPN/Getty ImagesSouthpole to SouthsideChristmas came early for Kristi Harrower and her Southside Flyers on Sunday in the form of a much-needed win over the ladder-leaders
Having won just one of their past six games
after losing to Adelaide in the City of Churches on Friday night
It was made all the more sweeter for Harrower
with the victory coming against the club they steered to its only championships in 2012-13 and 2013-14
we needed that big time," Kristi told ESPN post-game
"To do it against a quality group that has a lot of experience and will be there at the end of the season was really big
with travel in the background to then come home and play a second game
who have lost five games by 10 points or less
showed improvement and growth by repelling a fast-finishing Bendigo
"One time out I said to the girls 'we can't protect the lead
we've got to continue to be confident and aggressive' and that's why it's a huge confidence booster for us to be able to hang tough when teams are coming at us
it just shows we can do it and if we play like that every week we can play with anybody in this league," Harrower said
championship forward Carley Ernst is expected to return from a back injury after Christmas
A familiar face was spotted behind the Bendigo Spirit bench during Sunday's game against Southside -- WNBL champion and life member Jess Foley
That's Dr Foley who is the team doctor for the Spirit
While players generally move into coaching
who practices out of HealthCare on Collins in Melbourne's CBD
works with the Spirit's medical team to look after the roster of the top-of-the-table team
being part of a team is what you always miss," Foley explained
"Would I prefer to still be playing or coaching and enjoying the thrill of a win
Probably but even just being around a team environment is really nice
it's a feeling that never leaves you as an athlete."
Dandenong Rangers and Townsville Fire between 2000 and 2015
She earned WNBL All-Star status in 2007-08
a season where she was a key part of the Lightning's championship
Foley would go on to play in the AFLW and won a premiership in her debut season with the Adelaide Crows in 2019 and along with Monique Conti can lay claim to winning a title in both codes
It took all of one minute and 45 seconds for talented guard Tahlia Tupea to stamp her return to the WNBL in Round 9
who most recently played for the UC Capitals in 2021-22 before taking time away from the game
played her first game of the season on Sunday and ignited the Flames with a trademark jump shot three to get her team on the scoreboard
who also represented Australia as a junior before pledging her allegiance to New Zealand who she played for at last year's FIBA Asia Cup in Sydney
is fresh from a campaign with Northern Kahu in the Tauhi Basketball Aotearoa
The 27-year-old's impact was immediate with a team-high 18 points
two rebounds and two assists in an 86-73 defeat to Adelaide at the Quay Centre
Tupea is a legitimate talent and it's fantastic to see her back playing professionally in Australia
1: Returning to Sydney has been very fulfilling after four years between three different states
I've been able to spend time with family and friends and connecting back with them has filled my cup
2: I use my social media platform to speak about issues like mental health because overall health and wellbeing isn't just our physical health but mental and emotional too
By choosing to be open and authentically express both the struggles and achievements and the highs and lows on and off the court
I hope to encourage others to have more compassion towards one another
I think this creates a better sense of connection with my small community
makes them more self-aware and hopefully helps give tools and advice to help heal and express themselves
It's important to be gentle and empathetic towards others -- you never truly know or understand what someone has been or is going through
3: Each player gets a set amount of tickets per game and if I don't use them for my friends and family
I open it up to my followers to have the chance to watch the Sydney Flames in action wherever we play
I'm able to reconnect with those I've met in different states I've lived and played in and it's nice to have some Flames support at our away games too
