Paul Wellens insists he can still make a success of St Helens despite a dismal Magic Weekend defeat to Leeds Rhinos which ended in him being confronted by the club’s baying supporters Saints lost 17-4 to the Rhinos at St James’ Park with their only points on the night coming from a Matt Whitley try Trailing 10-0 and having delivered a less than impressive first 40 minutes Wellens’ side were booed off by the majority of their fans at half-time with some Saints supporters sat closer to pitchside level even trying to get at their head coach Wellens was also seen arguing with Jack Welsby who refused to clap the supporters that remained inside St James’ Park having been booed off In a passionate post-match press conference Wellens said: “I’m going to continue to conduct myself in the right way despite being under a huge amount of pressure “What I won’t comment on is that if people want to behave in a certain way I certainly won’t stoop to that level “I take full responsibility for where the team’s at “You lose two or three games at St Helens and it’s not like every other club If you lose two or three games at other clubs a lot of people are quite accepting of it… not here “I wouldn’t have it any other way because high expectations and high standards are what makes successful teams.” The 45-year-old continued: “I feel for the players in some respects because they’re desperate to win a game We’re showing we care in the wrong way a derby game on Good Friday which was a great contest then we really let ourselves down against Warrington you’re in what many would deem a ‘crisis’ “I thought tonight was a big game for us because you win tonight and people start to go ‘well actually they’re a good side and they’ll be okay’ and the scrutiny will be on us even more.” Saints have now lost five of their last seven games across all competitions including each of the most recent three to Wigan Warriors Having already been dumped out of the Challenge Cup by Warrington Wellens’ side now have a week without a game – and don’t play again until May 15 when Catalans Dragons visit the Totally Wicked Stadium Wellens said: “My job is to support the team and find a way forward I’ve got every confidence and every belief in this group of players that we can be successful “We’re going to have to ride out this tough period “It’s going to be a long couple of weeks off the back of a defeat but we’re going to have to continue to work hard to make improvements but I’m also going to put a lot of responsibility on the players to play their part “We’re obviously disappointed with the run of results that we’ve got but I firmly believe we can move forward and move forward well.” © Planet Sport Limited 2025 • All Rights Reserved By Eliza Wregg first published at 13 February 2025 - Three people have escaped physical injury after a shooter opened fire at a south-west Sydney home in the fourth public shooting in one week. New South Wales Police were called to Briggs Place in St Helens Park on Wednesday just after 7pm over reports of shots fired into a house. Witnesses have told police a dark-coloured vehicle was seen speeding off from the street after a weapon was unloaded. The three people inside at the time were not physically injured. A crime scene was established as police investigate the fourth shooting in a week. Late on Tuesday night shots were fired at a home in Merrylands. Officers determined the shooter was in a "light-coloured" car. According to The Daily Telegraph, citing police sources, at least one of the occupants inside the targeted house is known to authorities. A short time later, police were called to Bennett Street in nearby Bass Hill, about a 10-minute drive from the shooting scene, to report a car was on fire. A white Hyundai hatchback was well alight when firefighters arrived. Fire and Rescue NSW crews extinguished the blaze. Detectives are investigating if the car was used to flee from the Merrylands shooting. A father at the targeted home told Sunrise at least six bullets were fired through the front of the garage while his family slept inside. NSW Police Acting Superintendent Darren Beeche said in a press conference the shooting was a suspected gang-related drive-by by “cowards” with “bad intelligence”. "The family in that house I believe had nothing to do with crime, gangs or drugs," he told reporters on Wednesday. "These people have bad intelligence, late intelligence and it's usually a cowardly act by a coward in the middle of the night and unfortunately they often get the wrong place. "They're stupid, they're cowards and they don't care for other people." On Saturday another home in Blacktown was targeted in what police say was a case of "mistaken identity", adding the family are innocent. Last Thursday a Constitution Hill home was sprayed with bullets. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Police are appealing for information after four suspicious fires damaged two homes and two cars across south-west Sydney overnight.  About 11:30pm, emergency rescue services were called to the fire at a house in Airds that eventually destroyed the newly-built property. Just over an hour later, emergency workers received a call of a house fire at St Helens Park after a car had driven into the property. There were no fatalities during either of the fires, but a 70-year-old woman, the resident of the St Helens Park house, is currently in hospital under observation for smoke inhalation. Neighbours assisted her out of the burning house. After 1am, emergency services were called to Airds again after reports of a car being on fire. The car in question is linked to the owners of the now-destroyed house.  The house in St Helens Park was set ablaze following a car driving directly into the property. (ABC News: Alex Lewis) Shortly after, another car fire — this time in Claymore — was alerted to emergency services. This second car was allegedly stolen a couple of months ago, according to police. The cause of these four fires, and whether they're connected, is currently under investigation. One suspected cause for the fire in St Helens Park was the car that drove into house. Zone Commander for Metropolitan South 3 Greg Wright said the cause of the two fires has not been determined. (ABC News: Liam Patrick) "We understand there may have been a car that was driven into the home - that was on fire," said Zone Commander for Metropolitan South 3 Greg Wright.  Mr Wright said it is currently not clear whether the car was already on fire when it was driven into the home.  Mr Wright said the cause and any factors as to why the fire started are being investigated by police and fire investigators. However, the fire in St Helens Park comes days after reports of gun shots fired into another house in the same street.  Detective Inspector Andrew Mackay said there was a definite "line of inquiry" about whether the house fire in St Helens Park was related to last week's shooting. Detective Inspector Andrew Mackay called on the public to assist police by sharing any possible information they had. (ABC News: Liam Patrick) "We're keeping an open mind, there's a team of detectives working on the incident last week … when shots were fired into the premises. Mr Mackay said the occupant of the home that was shot at last week "is known to the police", but the occupant of home that caught fire is not known to the police. He said it's possible the St Helen's Park fire may have been a case of mistaken identity. Police have said it's possible there's a link between with the St Helens Park fire and a shooting on the same street last week. (ABC News: Alex Lewis) Mr Mackay said it's also possible the house fire in Airds may have been a case of arson. Mr Mackay said police were seeking the assistance of the public and that police "really do need the help of the community to identify those involved". St Helens Park resident and neighbour Peter Hannan said he woke up at 1:30am to the smell of burning wood, later noticing a number of fire engines around him. Mr Hannan said the connection of the shooting and the fire on his street was something "quite scary". St Helens Park resident Peter Hannan woke up at 1:30am to the smell of burning wood. (ABC News: Liam Patrick) Mr Hannan said he was now considering getting CCTV installed so he and his aunty could be more helpful to the police. Shore Financial CEO Theo Chambers (pictured above) revealed the top five ranked suburbs in each quintile “Working Class Sydney’s top suburb was Oakhurst where the median house price jumped 20.0% in the year to August,” he said “This was closely followed by Prestons Minto and St Helens Park which rounded out the top five.” Chambers said Suburban Sydney’s leading suburb was Fairfield West where house prices rose 19.1% “This was followed closely by North Rocks Chester Hill and Condell Park,” he said Kirrawee led the way in the Rising Sydney quintile Forest Lodge and Penshurst rounded out the top five in Rising Sydney,” he said As for the number one suburb in Professional Sydney that was Elanora Heights which enjoyed 18.2% house price growth “This was very closely followed by Marrickville Dulwich Hill and Avalon Beach,” Chambers explained Read more: RBA announces cash rate call Chambers said that Elite Sydney’s standout performer was Frenchs Forest where the median house price climbed 19.2% Concord and Lane Cove rounded out the top five in this quintile,” he said He noted that Frenchs Forest was a standout in Elite Sydney as the city’s population was becoming denser meaning units were increasingly replacing houses 93% of homes are still freestanding houses which tells you that it’s an affluent family suburb with a lot of character and highly desirable as a result,” he said the median days on market in Frenchs Forest was an already low 23 days compared to just 22 days in August 2022.” Chambers said the Sydney property market had significantly changed since the previous analysis conducted in March this year the average annual price growth for the standout suburbs was an astonishing 49.2% however it now is 18.6% for the suburbs in our report That shows you the market has significantly cooled,” he said “The average inventory level for these suburbs (amount of time it would take to sell all the houses or units in a particular location if they kept selling at the current rate and no more were added to the market) is a low 1.7 months which tells you that buyers have relatively few properties to choose from which is why the average days on market for these suburbs is just 24 days.” the Sydney market is likely to look very different when the next analysis occurs in six months’ time “Prices are likely to continue trending down in most parts of Sydney for a bit longer but it’s hard to say how much longer the downturn will last,” he said “It’s important to remember prices skyrocketed during the boom which means it’s likely only a share of those gains will be given back conditions are more favourable than earlier in the year.” Chambers said anyone who wanted to buy into the Sydney property market should see a broker to obtain pre-approval first “With interest rates rising so regularly the average person’s borrowing capacity is falling and is somewhat of a moving target meaning buyers need to know before they make an offer exactly how much they can borrow,” he said “Buyers should speak to a Shore Financial broker because we have good relationships with dozens of lenders and our experienced brokers know which ones will be the best match for a buyer’s requirements and objectives our brokers will also help the buyer get unconditional finance approval and manage the process through to settlement." with the assistance of the State Crime
