units – encompassing any property on a strata title, including townhouses, villa units and apartments – increased in value by up to $83,000 more than houses in the same suburb, PropTrack data showed The bulk of these suburbs were in Brisbane and greater Queensland – 50 in total – while a handful were in New South Wales and Victoria and one each in Tasmania and Western Australia “Units are up in Brisbane overall,” REA Group senior economist Angus Moore said “It’s a bit unique in that we’re not seeing that in other capitals.” The latest PropTrack Home Price Index showed Brisbane and the rest of Queensland were two of just three markets where unit-price growth outpaced house-price growth Brisbane units saw a 16.9% increase in the year to October while house prices increased by just 11.8% In the rest of Queensland units were up 11.6% while houses gained 10.1% Perth units slightly outpaced houses for price-growth – 21.1% vs 20.5% It bucked a trend seen nationally since 2015 where house-prices have seen almost twice the growth of unit prices “If we look over roughly the last 10 years prices are up 86% for detached homes and 44% for units,” he said The suburb with the largest monetary growth in unit prices compared with house prices was not Goodwood in the Adelaide Hills area saw unit prices increase by $82,037 more than house prices did in the past 12 months Next cab off the rank was in Brisbane’s Nundah where units earned $71,086 more than houses in the past year Units there increased in price by about 28% whereas houses saw a much smaller uptick of about 6% Local agent and Harcourts Pinnacle Aspley, Strathpine, Petrie director Johnny Lin said a recent boom in house prices meant people – particularly first-home buyers – were priced out of buying a free-standing house in the suburb “Most have a budget of $700,000 to $800,000 but with that budget they have to go really far away,” Mr Lin said “Townhouses are more popular than apartments but they are more expensive – a two-bedroom apartment will cost between $600,000 and $750,000 whereas a townhouse can cost up to $900,000.” that’s significantly less than the median house price in Nundah – which despite only clocking a small annual increase – was $1.18 million Apartments such as 3/15 Vernon Street, Nundah are popular with first-home buyers “Houses are typically more expensive than units you can see by and large houses are still more expensive – even in these suburbs where units have seen more growth in the past year,” Mr Moore said in the only Sydney suburb where units outperformed houses – Engadine – the median house price was $1.41 million compared with $846,310 for units The unit price increased by nearly $20,000 more than the house price in the year – but that was not enough to get close to the house price However, there were instances of units seeing big sale-prices in the suburb, Stone Engadine agent Rhys Christofa said “I sold an apartment in the Vue building recently where the buyer paid $1.417 million and that was more than what he sold his house for,” Mr Christofa said He said there was an “oversupply” of houses compared with units in the area and the demand for townhouses and apartments was strong among downsizers and first-home buyers Templestowe Lower saw some of the city’s strongest unit-price growth when compared with houses – clocking a $36,742 difference in dollar-value gains in the year The popularity of sizeable townhouses – which appealed to both downsizers and young families – was the likely reason, Barry Plant Doncaster East director Mark Di Giulio said “There are a lot of the Baby Boomer generation who want to downsize but not down-grade lifestyle – they want low-maintenance opulent properties,” Mr Di Giulio said Premium apartments such as 4/231 High Street, Templestowe Lower were popular with downsizers “Younger couples are also wanting low maintenance now – they are wanting townhouses – large modern properties without the land.” He said Templestowe Lower made-up for the lack of a backyard with a “plethora” of parks country lifestyle but it’s only 12.5 kilometres to the CBD,” he said Mr Moore said unit-owners in these suburbs could potentially find it easier to up-size and stay local though it would depend on a case-by-case basis it can give you a better chance of buying something larger,” he said “The equity helps with upgrading it helps with reducing the amount of a deposit that is needed.” third parties have written and supplied the content and we are not responsible for it completeness investigation Queensland’s police commissioner described punching as a confronting An officer attending a crash north of Brisbane on Thursday repeatedly struck one of the drivers and deployed a Taser while he remained in the front seat of a damaged car Police said officers attended a three-vehicle crash on the corner of Gympie and Samsonvale roads at Strathpine about 1.45pm Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the footage in the public domain was confronting but needed to be viewed in context Carroll said she had viewed the footage captured from the officer’s body-worn camera the officer gave very clear instructions as to what he expected in what was a situation where someone was affected by drugs involved in a road crash and as a result of that I’ve escalated the situation to go to ethical standards immediately for an assessment “Not only will they look at the footage that we’ve seen they will also look at the [officer’s] body-worn video as well as other body-worn video as well as CCTV footage.” Carroll said “closed hand tactics” – punches – were a confronting part of law enforcement when I saw that [footage] I found it very confronting “But when I saw it in context of what the situation was I can further understand why that use of force option was chosen.” Police Minister Mark Ryan said the community expected the very best from its police officers “Some people would probably say that that’s a little bit unfair sometimes to hold one particular profession to a higher standard than others a lot of people expect a lot from them,” he said Dashcam footage shows the driver’s vehicle turning a corner at speed before hitting stationary vehicles stopped at the lights Witnesses told Nine News the driver appeared to be holding a wine bottle before police arrived at the scene Separate footage shows an officer repeatedly striking the man through the open passenger side window In a statement issued later on Thursday by police they said they would allege “the man was drinking from a wine bottle and was under the influence of the substance.” “After the officer attempted to take the bottle away several times it was allegedly thrown towards him,” the statement read “After giving numerous directions for the man to remain in the car it will be alleged he continued to attempt to leave the vehicle by kicking the door into the officer who used physical force to contain the man in the vehicle.” Another officer was also allegedly spat on by the driver The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Curtis Owen was behind the wheel of the car when he ploughed into two other vehicles at an intersection in Strathpine, north Brisbane The crash made headlines after a bystander captured footage of an officer rushing to the side of the car and punching Owen before using a Taser Owen was arrested and pleaded guilty to nine charges including driving under the influence and drug offences before he learned his fate in court on Friday New bodycam footage was released to 9News on Monday and showed Owen kicking and throwing a wine bottle at the officer while he was still behind the wheel of the smoking wreck Owen had a BAC of 0.18 - more than three times the legal limit - and was seen in the footage being told to remain in the car and hand over the bottle But Owen swigged the remaining alcohol and threw the bottle at the officer before he tried to climb out the window. He kicked the officer so hard his glasses and bodycam were dislodged and fell to the ground.  The driver ignored the repeated directions of the officer which led to him punching the man when he continued to climb out the window and then deploying his Taser.  Minutes earlier Owen had careened through an intersection before swerving across a traffic island and smashing into two cars, including a red four-wheel-drive, that was stopped at the lights.  Owen also pleaded guilty to spitting on an officer, assaulting two officers, and obstructing a firefighter who was first on the scene.  His lawyer told the court on Friday he had been drinking heavily following the death of a friend.  The court also heard he had a criminal history including dangerous driving, trafficking drugs, and a 2016 offence for assaulting a police officer.  He was sentenced to 15 months jail but walked free after he was granted immediate parole. Owen was also ordered to pay $750 compensation to the officer he spat at and another $500 in fines. An investigation by police ethical standards command into the actions of the officer filmed punching him remains ongoing. 'We do not believe they're currently residing in the property.' Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have since received confirmation the person is safe. Mr O'Brien added the fire should serve as a timely reminder for homes around Australia to check their fire alarms. 'It's devastating for a family to lose their belongings and their home at any point of the year but now so, even more than most,' he said.
