Find out more on our Engage Victoria website With the entire country in the grip of a housing crisis Australia’s state and territory governments are undertaking a wide range of projects to create more homes the State Government has set significant targets for housing development and initiated numerous projects has been partnering with industry and communities to deliver the best possible housing outcomes for Victorians Council had the opportunity to speak with Development Victoria’s Acting Chief Executive Officer about the vital role local government plays in residential projects Ms Wandel explained that one of Development Victoria’s primary function is to work with other agencies to unlock surplus government sites and redevelop them for a range of purposes across housing Ms Wandel said that Development Victoria has a long history in delivering housing across the state’s residential communities which was released in 2023 by the State Government is a key policy driver for the organisation “At Development Victoria we deliver diverse and affordable housing making home ownership possible for more Victorian’s further reinforces the importance of this,” Ms Wandel said we have delivered 1,500 homes across a range of townhouses In the next five years we intend to deliver a further 2,500 new homes we will be responsible for delivering approximately 9,000 new homes.” Ms Wandel said that the Housing Statement presents a rightly ambitious target given how many people are finding it harder than ever before to find an affordable home and we can’t do all of that work on our own we’ve engaged and worked closely with more than 20 local councils across metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria We know that Victoria is growing at an incredibly fast pace Councils are very connected to their communities so it’s really important to us that we work closely with those councils in which we’re delivering projects to ensure that we’re delivering the best outcomes.” Development Victoria has worked with many councils in the delivery of housing projects One of the housing projects that Development Victoria has long been associated with is its Aurora residential project at Epping “This project has been going for almost 20 years and in that time so we have a really established community at our Aurora development which is close to schools and jobs and all of the essential services necessary to support a residential community.” Development Victoria delivered approximately 2,000 affordable and diverse housing opportunities between 2005 to 2016 – all located within walking distance to the Aurora Town Centre Aurora incorporates many leading-edge environmental design elements including six-star energy designed homes and class A recycled water delivered to every home Aurora’s six-star energy efficient homes are estimated to be able to save up to 5t of greenhouse gas emissions per year Ms Wandel explained that one of Development Victoria’s newest residential projects is the Luma development in Sunshine North growing part of Melbourne in the bustling west and there we’re delivering approximately 300 townhouses at a former water authority site Part of what Development Victoria does is identify underutilised government land and look at how we can repurpose it “It’s a site that is really well located to the new Sunshine Hospital to transport and to employment opportunities for new residents that are going to call Luma home.” Ms Wandel said that councils being the closest level of government to communities makes them valuable project partners “They are obviously hearing a lot from their communities about what’s important to them but also in terms of the connections and public spaces they’d like to see in and around those communities it’s really important that we have an open and ongoing dialogue with the councils in which we’re delivering our projects that ensures our projects reflect the needs and aspirations of the community there’s going to be times when our project objectives don’t fully align but I think it’s important to recognise that ultimately for both councils and for state government which is ensuring that we’re delivering the right outcome for our communities.” Ms Wandel said that Development Victoria is eager to maintain a strong dialogue and that through good communication councils and government can make well-informed decisions that lead to positive community outcomes “If councils are interested in the work that we’re doing we’d absolutely love to talk more to them about the projects that we’re delivering in their areas.” Ms Wandel said that one of Development Victoria’s most important principles is that it is not just constructing homes that means that we’re thinking about our projects through various lenses It’s about ensuring that we can deliver affordable and diverse housing supply into the communities in which we’re working “And we know a community is where people come together which is why we have our master planned communities such as our project at Riverwalk in Werribee Riverwalk is a former Melbourne Water site We’ve joined with Melbourne Water to deliver a new community there and when fully complete it will include approximately 2600 homes as well as retail education and community spaces close to services and transport “We’re providing a diverse range of homes for a diverse range of people from an affordability perspective Ms Wandel said that local councils play a pivotal role in the housing projects Development Victoria is undertaking which are absolutely critical at the moment people are finding it really challenging to find an affordable home which is close to services and that’s why the government has released the Victorian Housing Statement which has an ambitious target of delivering 800,000 new homes over the next ten years “Development Victoria plays a key role in delivery of the housing statement and we can’t do it without partnerships across all levels of government.” Disaster recovery support is now available to flood impacted communities in Bourke Brewarrina and Walgett in northern New South Having gardened on a woodland balcony and in this garden, with all its aforementioned shade, I’m a ride-or-die shade planting gal. Leafy, textural, woodland-inspired planting is my jam. I can appreciate a dry, sun-drenched garden (for inspiration, check out Beth Chatto’s former car park) but I’d take a fern over a lavender any day Deploy the right plants (ones that prefer shade or certainly don’t need six hours or more of full sunlight a day) and you can be awash in a lush You can make more sun-demanding plants work for you if you capture the right pockets of light in your plot; I grow roses and cut-flower annuals here every year So there’s no need to give up on a garden just because of the needle on your compass North Sunshine is back on the winners list in the Western Football League Having made the decision in the off season to drop down to the thirds competition and field just one side the Roadrunners decision seems to be the right one It only took one round into the thirds season for the Roadrunners to get a win on the board Coach Paul Rossiter said it was a pretty special moment not just for the 24 players The side’s last win came in May 2021 “It was just electric and it was just amazing for the people of the club who have been there over the years who haven’t seen that for a long time “It was Anzac Day and a big occasion and the women’s side played before us and we had our junior launch night While getting at least a win on the board was always a focus for the Roadrunners they weren’t sure it would come this quickly A win against Hoppers Crossing in their final practice match gave the group some confidence going into Friday night The Roadrunners did the damage in the first half and led by 42 points at the main break after keeping the Devils scoreless in the second quarter the Roadrunners had done more than enough to come away with an 11.17 (83)-5.9 (39) win Rossiter said he knew they were switched on early by the way they warmed up but couldn’t breathe a sigh of relief until late in the game “Our warm up had been a lot better than what it had been,” he said “We had done quite well in all three of our practice matches It was only when there was 30 seconds to go that I could enjoy the win Rossiter said they had been able to increase their inside 50 count from the practice matches and that had helped Just Cameron Howitt and Rhys Briggs had sung the song for the Roadrunners before and it’s the first time they’ve won in round one since 2017 Rossiter said the club was really starting to find some momentum after making the decision to drop a division “We have 47 blokes on the list now,” he said “There are 25 to 28 at training every night “Culture is the number one thing and if you can get the culture right Rossiter said he had given the guys until Sunday to celebrate and then it was about focusing on round two against Glen Orden and planning is underway to help this happen The Albion Quarter presents a Read our Privacy Policy Sunshine is among a string of relatively affordable suburbs within 10 kilometres of the CBD where you can buy a house with at least two bedrooms and a backyard for less than seven figures. The most affordable of these suburbs is Glenroy, where the median house price is $674,568, Domain data shows. Braybrook and Sunshine North come in second and third, with median house prices of $684,000 and $715,500 respectively. Garlick, a public servant, and Cowling, a copywriter, recently sold their Sunshine townhouse and are planning to purchase a larger home in the area. “We really love Sunshine, so we’re definitely open to [buying there], and to be honest, depending on how the market goes, that’s probably within our price bracket,” Garlick said. The median house price in Sunshine – which comes in at number 10 on Domain’s list – is $807,500. Garlick, 39, and Cowling, 36, both grew up in the inner west and didn’t want to move too far away when buying their first home. Garlick said Sunshine offered the same great amenities as nearby suburbs like Yarraville and Footscray without the price tag. A collection of premium suburbs just got dramatically cheaper Would you leave Sydney and move to Melbourne to afford to buy property? ‘Priced out of Melbourne’: Why first-home buyers are choosing to buy and live in regional Australia “There’s lots of green spaces, it’s super accessible, there’s some really good cafes, and it’s affordable,” Garlick said. “Lots of young families have just started moving in … they still want to have that inner-city lifestyle and … be close to what they know, but they can’t afford [more expensive areas], and Sunshine is just absolutely perfect for that, and I think it’s really overlooked.” Domain head of research and economics Dr Nicola Powell said houses were more affordable in high-density areas where block sizes were smaller, offering more choice at a lower price. “What you’ve got is that efficient use of land coming in medium-density housing through townhouses,” Powell said. “Land comes at a premium. The closer you get to a city centre, that’s where we see efficient use of land in the form of units and apartments, and that higher density allows the ability to purchase closer to a CBD at a lower price point.” Garlick said while they would have been able to purchase a larger property in the outer suburbs for a similar price, it was important for them to be close to the CBD, family and local amenities. “We really weighed it up with our lifestyle,” Garlick said. “That’s why we ended up with the two-bedroom townhouse rather than a four-bedroom house further out, and I’m really glad that we made that decision.” Their real estate agent Marcus Fregonese, director at Ray White Sunshine, said he was seeing buyers priced out of the inner north and inner west turn to suburbs like Sunshine and Braybrook, where they can find a two-bedroom or three-bedroom home for less than $1 million. “In Sunshine, we’re seeing young first home owners coming into the marketplace, and we’re also seeing second-time buyers who are currently living in areas like Northcote, Collingwood, Footscray and Yarraville,” he said. “They’re coming out to Sunshine for affordability reasons – you get more bang for your buck.” Demographer Mark McCrindle said buyer interest in inner-city suburbs has had a resurgence since the pandemic, with some people willing to trade an extra bedroom for lifestyle and a short commute. “Post-pandemic, people were happy to look at the regions, look to the outer suburbs,” McCrindle said. “They thought they might need the extra space for a work-from-home office. They’re recognising that if they’re at home they can get by without a dedicated room. All of those shifts are bringing people closer to the CBD.” With heightened interest rates and cost-of-living pressures, McCrindle added that buying smaller homes or apartments in central areas was attractive to buyers driven by affordability. “What drives affordability is supply and particularly densified living. When affordability is the focus, these areas close to the city do give you some good options.” The information on this website is intended to be of a general nature only and doesn't consider your Stony Creek into a new open space for Sunshine North residents to enjoy The enhanced site has created a natural space with improved amenity and environmental values featuring a wetlands area and native plantings along the creek channel A network of paths and tracks will also better connect the area encouraging use of the space for passive recreation and relaxation Works will begin shortly to install a stormwater harvesting and reuse irrigation system as a result of an additional $500,000 contribution from the Victorian Government in 2020 This will help secure vital sustainable water supplies and provide high-quality public open space for the Sunshine community The Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project was established in 2016 with the original aim of naturalising 1.2 kilometres of concrete channel Following the discovery of asbestos in 2018 and subsequent work to clean the site the scope was revised to retain the concrete channel – while leaving the creek in a better state than before Project partners providing funding and support include: Additional support has been provided by the Commonwealth Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund After significant deposits of asbestos were found on site The entire wetland site and southern 400 metres of concrete channel were remediated for asbestos Works were then suspended to investigate further funding opportunities to realise the original vision to transform the area as the site area had been remediated of asbestos Plans began to remediate the northern 800 metres of concrete channel (Furlong Road end) installing a mesh barrier topped with clean soil to ‘cap’ the asbestos below ground and netting installed to allow vegetation to establish The northern channel was planted with indigenous trees and shrubs to improve natural habitat and amenity Works are underway to prepare for a stormwater harvesting and reuse irrigation system as a result of additional funding provided by the Victorian Government Contact Get it here. A 73-year-old woman who handed herself in to police following a hit-run collision that killed a young child in Melbourne’s west has been released. Three-year-old Ethan Nguyen died at the Royal Children’s Hospital on Thursday night after suffering critical head injuries when he was hit by a car on McIntyre Road, in Sunshine North. The woman, from Heathcote Junction in Melbourne’s north, handed herself in about 9.20am on Friday morning after police issued a public appeal for help finding the driver. The 73-year-old was questioned by major collision detectives on Friday morning but was released several hours later pending further enquiries. “The investigation into the collision remains active and ongoing,” police said. On Friday, Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said the woman had been driving a red Toyota Camry sedan, which had damage to the right-hand side of the bonnet. “Having a quick look at the vehicle it is pretty evident that you would know that you hit something. But whether that driver knew that they had hit a child is something that is yet to be determined,” he said. Fitzpatrick said the young boy had been dragged under the car between 20 and 30 metres. “The actual distance is yet to be determined, but that child certainly has been dragged under the car for some distance,” he said. Ethan’s grieving aunt, Kim Vuong, said she last saw her nephew happy and playing. Vuong was among at least seven family members who visited the scene in Sunshine North on Friday. They taped a photo of Ethan to a tree and left other tributes at the roadside, including a Spider-Man balloon, cups of bubble tea, flowers and incense sticks. “I saw him last week,” Vuong said. “[It’s] very, very sad.” Saad Alyoshik, from Fredi’s Barber Shop on McIntyre Road, witnessed the tragedy on Thursday. He said he saw the boy run from a premises opposite the barber shop towards the northbound vehicle. “I was finished with a customer and then my business owner said, ‘Stop, stop, stop’,” Alyoshik said. “This road is a very dangerous road.” Other business owners said there had been accidents involving pedestrians along the shopping strip in the past. North Sunshine Post News and Lottery owner Mike Smith described the incident as a “terrible, terrible tragedy.” “It is a busy road and we do have accidents,” Smith said. Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller told reporters at the scene on Thursday night that Ethan’s mother was collecting her son from a childcare centre moments before the incident occurred. On Friday morning, Fitzpatrick said investigators had confirmed Ethan was walking with his mother and broke free before attempting to cross the road. “The mother is beside herself with grief,” he said. “The family is absolutely overwhelmed with the death of that young child. We’ll provide them with all the support and welfare that they need from our perspective, but they currently have family and friends around them. “But as you can imagine losing a beautiful young child like that is going to be devastating.” Fitzpatrick said police did not believe speed was a factor in the incident. “That particular part of the road last night, it’s not particularly well lit,” he said. “But driving a motor car on the road, it’s a dual responsibility, so everyone needs to be aware of what’s around them.” The young boy’s shoe could be seen on the road as police examined the area on Thursday night. Miller said it would be used to help determine the speed at which the car was going when it struck the boy. “These sorts of collisions, sometimes they bring out the worst and the best of people. People have stopped today to help [because] they’ve seen a child on the road. That’s humanity,” Miller said. He stopped in the middle of the road and the car came and hit him,' Ethan's grandmother told Herald Sun as she broke down in tears A witness on Friday told Daily Mail Australia the vehicle that hit the child braked immediately after the accident Ethan’s aunt Kim Vuong described her nephew as a happy boy who loved the Marvel character Spider-Man ‘He liked to go to the park with his brother He had one brother and a sister,’ she said Graphic CCTV footage from a nearby shop showed the boy being dragged by a red sedan for a couple of metres as his mother rushed to his aid Emergency services rushed to the scene immediately and desperately tried to treat the boy's life threatening injuries He was taken to hospital where he later died Barber Saad Alyoshik said his colleague desperately tried to stop the boy from running across the busy road Positioned directly opposite where the tragedy unfolded Mr Alyoshik said he watched on in horror as they boy bolted out of a garage and towards the road We see the boy when he comes there and he's a little boy I think someone opened the garage and he was just running.' Mr Alyoshik claims the car that hit the little boy braked after the collision before driving off but hit him and after than run away,' he said Mr Alyoshik described the chaos in the moments after the tragedy Mr Alyoshik said it took police up to 15 minutes to arrive at the scene After 10 minutes (they) come or 15 minutes three minutes because little boy,' he said Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said damage located on the elderly woman's car indicated she was indeed the person who had hit and killed Ethan 'That woman is currently assisting with our inquiries,' he said The superintendent said the incident had been observed by multiple witnesses 'We've got quite a few others to talk to through our CCTV cameras but yeah we have people assisting us,' Superintendent Fitzpatrick said Detectives believe speed had not played a factor in the tragic accident 'There was pretty heavy traffic along that road at that time of the night So we're certainly not alleging that that car was travelling over the speed limit,' Superintendent Fitzpatrick said police now believe the woman did in fact know that she had struck the child before driving off 'Having a quick look at the vehicle it's pretty evident that you would know that you have hit something Whether that driver knew that they'd hit a child or something else is still to be determined.' Superintendent Fitzpatrick said Officers from Victoria's Major Collision Unit scoured the crime scene overnight cordoning off the busy road and knocking on the doors of nearby homes and businesses asking for CCTV vision of the incident A child's shoe lay in the middle of the road as police examined the scene locals attending the strip of shops across the road from the tragedy expressed their grief The poor kid,' one man told Daily Mail Australia Floral tributes and treats - such is the Vietnamese tradition - have been left at the site where Ethan died Superintendent Fitzpatrick said the child was hit by the car's front right-hand side 'That child certainly has been dragged under the car for some distance The child was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital Superintendent Fitzpatrick said the child's family was overwhelmed with grief 'We'll provide them with all of the support and welfare that they need from our perspective but they currently have family and friends around them,' he said losing a beautiful young child like that is going to be devastating and they're going to be like this for a little while Police believe the child simply broke free from his mother and dashed onto the road but again we need to be always vigilant around our circumstances paying attention because at the very slightest moment you can be confronted with things,' Superintendent Fitzpatrick said has dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police with their enquiries is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:..
