Two Taylors Hill men are among 12 people arrested by detectives as part of an investigation into the alleged extortion of tobacco stores linked to a Middle Eastern organised crime syndicate
Fourteen warrants were executed on March 17 at residential addresses in Taylors Hill
Meadow Heights and storage facilities in Roxburgh Park and Coolaroo
Police subsequently arrested a dozen people
including two 19-year-olds from Taylors Hill
authorities from Taskforce Lunar also seized four firearms
Taskforce Lunar Detective Inspector Graham Banks said police would continue to crackdown on organised crime
“We will allege that those we’ve arrested today have been carrying out extortions on behalf of a serious and organised crime figure who resides offshore,” he said
“Victoria Police has been crystal clear that we will target all of those involved at absolutely every level of this criminality — be it a syndicate leader
a facilitator or the foot soldiers carrying out the arson attacks and extortions
“There is a total lack of care and respect for life and the community
and we will relentlessly keep working our way up until we get all the way to the top of these organised crime groups.”
Police will allege those involved have been attending tobacco stores and providing an international WhatsApp phone number and instructing store owners to call the number
a member of the syndicate instructs owners to pay a sum of money monthly or threatens to burn the store down
Police said the investigation remains ongoing
Anyone with information on serious and organised crime linked to the illicit tobacco trade is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppers.com.au

Emergency services found a wounded Fatho alone in the BMW on Vaucluse Boulevard in Taylors Hill about 11.30pm on Sunday. Paramedics treated him, but he died at the scene
Police believe Guerra – who appeared in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Friday – broke into a Mulgrave mechanic early Sunday morning and stole the BMW
which was one of 28 cars reported stolen from the business
Fatho approached the Mitsubishi in a Caroline Springs car park
Fatho had earlier fallen out with the two occupants of the car
and he kicked and punched the Mitsubishi before it drove out of the car park
ramming the Mitsubishi at least three times
at one point causing the fleeing vehicle to spin around
At another point during the 15-minute pursuit
the occupants of the Mitsubishi thought they were being shot at after one of them heard metal hit the boot
The chase ended when the Mitsubishi crashed into the bollards at Taylors Hill and the BMW pulled up behind it
The pair who fled in the Mitsubishi heard an occupant of the BMW yell abusive threats before the fatal confrontation
Guerra was arrested on Thursday afternoon after police intercepted him in a stolen Volkswagen SUV in Mulgrave
Guerra was bailed earlier this year after being charged with multiple stolen vehicle
He did not apply for bail on Friday when charged with offences connected to the Taylors Hill pursuit
and will face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on May 30

Police are searching for three men involved in a fatal shooting in Melbourne’s western fringe on Sunday that ended with one of the alleged offenders knocking on a resident’s door asking for directions
Emergency services found a man with a suspected gunshot wound to his upper body inside a stolen BMW parked outside a home on Vaucluse Boulevard in Taylors Hill at 11.30pm on Sunday
Police say the BMW had been chasing a white Mitsubishi sedan through the suburb when the Mitsubishi crashed into bollards separating Grange Terrace and Johnston Way
They allege a man got out of the Mitsubishi armed with a long-arm firearm and confronted the two men inside the BMW before firing a shot into the front windscreen of the car
Police say the driver of the BMW then drove 500 metres away from the scene of the shooting and called 000 to report a man had been shot before leaving the area
One of the two occupants of the Mitsubishi knocked on a resident’s door asking for directions to get out of the estate before the pair ran away
No one else was injured during the incident
Authorities arrived shortly after and an SES tent was set up around the BMW

Businessman John Shalit has listed the modern Watervale Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s west Taylors Hill
The neighbourhood complex on 1.87 hectares could sell for in excess of $45m
occupying 64 per cent of the 5286 sqm lettable area
some occupied by essential services businesses
CBRE’s James Douglas with JLL’s Stuart Taylor
Tom Noonan and Sam Hatcher are representing Mr Shalit
who owns Construction Engineering (story continues below)
“The asset provides a highly resilient tenancy mix
underpinned by a long-term lease to Woolworths
expiring in 2030 with two further 10 year options
a strong medical offering and in-built fixed annual specialty rental reviews
key investment considerations driving buyer interest in this sector,” Mr Douglas said
“Whilst we have seen significant yield compression in this sub-sector in the past 24 months
pricing metrics for neighbourhood centres remain attractive relative to prime assets in the office or industrial markets,” he added
“Suburban retail assets have typically been dominated by private investors because of the lower yields
unlisted funds and offshore investors are now active buyers,” according to the executive
“The primary reason is the defensive stability of these assets and investors’ appetite for capital preservation in an environment vulnerable to external shocks”
Mr Shalit was behind a plan to develop two 19 level apartment buildings on an L-shaped South Melbourne site covering 28-32 Albert Street and 13-21 Palmerston Crescent

Want to raise a family? These are the country’s top 12 neighbourhoods for kids and parents.
Owning your own family home is the Australian dream – but with mortgage rates soaring and lifestyle needs evolving, it can be difficult to know where to buy.
Financial services firm Property Credit sifted through data to identify standout suburbs that deliver a perfect blend of affordability, community structure, convenience, amenities, and quality of life.
If you check the box above before you log in, you won’t have to log back into the website next time you return, even if you close your browser and come back later.
“Selecting a family home is a decision that transcends the physical space,” affirmed Giordano Stepancic, CEO of Property Credit. “It’s about choosing a community, investing in a lifestyle, and considering the legacy we leave for our children.
“The suburbs we’ve highlighted are transitioning to a buyers’ market, presenting a prime window for families to find a home in a community where they can truly belong,” he said.
Here are Property Credit’s top choices across a range of Australian states.
Jindalee, in Perth’s outer suburbs, stands out for its “proximity to Perth’s vibrant lifestyle and community-driven spirit”.
Located 40 kilometres north of the central business district, Jindalee offers a blend of coastal leisure and convenient amenities. The suburb has an average house price of $665,000, but with high rates of development expected for the future, now might be the time to get into the Jindalee market.
At $698,000, the median house price in the northern Perth suburb of Landsdale is a touch higher than Jindalee’s, but it is conveniently located only 16 kilometres from the city.
The suburb champions “affordability and a balanced market, making it ideal for families seeking both urban conveniences and suburban tranquillity”, according to Property Credit.
Johnston, a suburb of Palmerston, offers relaxed family living and “spacious, serene living environments, just a short commute from the bustling heart of Darwin”.
With the median house costing just $632,500, it’s an accessible option for many families looking to make this part of the Northern Territory their home.
Famous for its name, the laidback town of Humpty Doo offers “a unique blend of outback charm and urban proximity”, according to Property Credit.
Its median house price of $675,000, abundance of local schools and convenient access to Darwin and Palmerston could make this an appealing choice for families looking to put down roots in the territory.
Heading down to South Australia, the Adelaide suburb of Mawson Lakes offers walking trails and leisure opportunities in abundance, ensuring “a well-rounded lifestyle for families”.
Located 12 kilometres north of the Adelaide CBD, Mawson Lakes has a median house price of $672,500 and offers convenient access to the University of South Australia and Technology Park Adelaide.
According to Property Credit, the outer Adelaide suburb of Banksia Park is lauded for its “strong community bonds, underpinned by Adelaide’s cultural tapestry and economic stability”.
With a median house price of just $623,750, Banksia Park is home to a plethora of affordable properties on its leafy, tree-lined streets.
Over in south-east Queensland, Ormeau Hills is a Gold Coast suburb that Property Credit picked out as being ideal for nature-loving families.
The suburb offers a unique blend of rural-residential and suburban property, while “maintaining a family-oriented atmosphere amidst Queensland’s picturesque backdrop”.
Just next door, Windaroo offers “a quintessential blend of the Gold Coast’s leisurely lifestyle with Brisbane’s economic heartbeat”.
The suburb has a median house price of $700,000, and is clearly a magnet for families, who make up 84 per cent of Windaroo households.
It’s a tough call to find a family home in Sydney for under the $1 million mark, but families looking for a bargain may like to head to Bardia.
Located 34 kilometres south-west of the CBD, Bardia has a median house price of just $885,000 and offers a wide range of contemporary homes.
Claremont Meadows lies a short drive from Penrith in Sydney’s west, and is located 45 kilometres away from the CBD.
With the median home sitting at $865,000, Claremont Meadows is one of the few Sydney locales where families can still get some bang for their buck.
Down in Victoria, Seabrook “boasts lush landscapes and community amenities, all within reach of Melbourne’s thriving hub”.
Its local public school ranks among Victoria’s best, and with the median house price hovering in the mid-$700,000s, homes in this neighbourhood are still a steal.
Families who choose to settle in the north-west Melbourne suburb of Taylors Hill would “have access to both nature’s tranquillity and urban sophistication”, according to Property Credit.
A master-planned suburb with plenty of fresh, modern homes and amenities, Taylors Hill is a favourite for families, who make up a whopping 90 per cent of all households in the suburb.

Taylors Hill Primary School has put its generosity on show, becoming one of the top fundraisers in the state for the annual Jeans for Genes Day.
The fundraiser, which helps raise money for the Children’s Medical Research Institute by encouraging people to wear jeans to school or work, raised thousands of dollars in 2018. Taylors Hill primary raised $830 to be the ninth highest fundraiser out of all Victorian schools that participated.
Principal Danielle Stella last week said it was a proud day for the school.
“We have done this each year since we opened in 2010, and it’s always been a big part of the year to bring awareness and raise some money along the way,” Ms Stella said.
“This was our biggest year so far, and it’s great to bring awareness and recognition to such an important cause.
“As well as raising money, we make sure that the school community is aware of where the money is going, and educating the students and giving families something to talk about.”
“We are working with the aim of giving every child the best start to life. It is a privilege to work in partnership with every school … protecting the health of our nation’s greatest treasure: our children,” he said.
“We would not be able to do the important work of research into children’s genetic diseases without the sustained generosity of our partner schools.”

was given an unusual brief from the City of Melton
he was asked to design an elderly care centre
''The demographics are extremely wide
from 80-year-olds to teenagers,'' Hede says
While the day centre for the elderly centred on Morton Homestead
the Taylors Hill Youth Community Centre required an entirely new building
Restoring and adding a new wing to the homestead was fairly straightforward

the brief for the youth centre changed with the community's involvement
So what started out as a building solely for youth is now a multi-functional space that draws the broader community
The amenities to be accommodated within the youth community centre were extensive
as well as a separate area for bands to practise their music
as well as change room facilities and amenities for those using the two adjacent ovals
''Kids often come to the centre just to use the skateboard bowl
without necessarily wanting to come inside the building,'' Hede says

As the topography of Calder Park Drive is undulating
Hede Architects were keen to create a low-slung building
steel refrigerator panels (sandwiched with insulation) and steel
the facades on either side of the building concertina in and out across the site
and those inside have discrete views and privacy
''We wanted to bring in as much northern light as possible
but it was important that the youth don't feel they are under surveillance,'' Hede says
rather than constructing impenetrable walls within the building
which could provide youth unlimited freedom
the architects carefully allocated spaces where there was passive surveillance
One of the key features in Hede Architecture's design are the three community halls located in the centre of the floor plan
or opened up entirely to provide enough space for community gatherings
this area is ideal for everything from youth festivals to community meetings
the architects used vibrant colours for the walls
Playful furniture adds to a sense of youth culture
''This interior is markedly different to the one created at Morton Homestead,'' Hede says
One of the most used areas within the centre is the courtyard
some young people may not even enter the building
They're quite content to bring their skateboards and ''shoot the breeze''
Hede filmed one of the skateboarders in action
as he was following the dips and turns of the bowl
''When the guy completed the course
he came right up to the camera and raised two fingers [in the peace sign]
I think that meant he was pleased with the result,'' Hede says
