Ex-tropical cyclone Alfred made landfall at 9pm on Saturday, after dawdling off Bribie Island, where it sat for 12 hours without moving on Saturday.
When it finally arrived just north of Brisbane, the city was buffeted by howling, gale-force winds, making it an uncomfortable night for many.
Trees were uprooted and came crashing down on houses, cars and power lines, debris flew through the air and windows and doors rattled, catching residents by surprise after the weather had remained benign for much of Saturday.
Giant fig trees in Brisbane’s CBD were toppled.
Redcliffe on the city’s northern fringe was among the hardest-hit areas, as roofs were ripped from several homes.

The weather bureau’s Angus Hines said Brisbane experienced an “extra squeeze” in the wind between the ex-tropical cyclone and a high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea.

The Jungle is hard to miss as you're barrelling down Wynnum Road because a real airplane appears to have crashed into its facade
If Indiana Jones happened to be on board at time then he would find himself at home at this elaborate and ingenious kids' indoor play centre in Tingalpa.
the Jungle has different attractions all with separate pricing
You can drop in for an hour and just do one or two
or buy a package and stay half the day
There's a licenced mezzanine restaurant and downstairs café
and the bar is open on weekends too.
and the place where your little monkeys will likely spend the most time
You know those soft play mazes they have at Macca's and shopping centres
Think one of those but amped up to 11 or 12
It's flippin' huge: at least four stories of ropes
Perhaps its most unusual feature is the central atrium where hundreds of squishy blue balls pop noisily out of an air-powered vessel and gather on the floor
If you grab a few and ascend to the third level
you can put these into pipe guns and fire them at people and objects below
Abutting this is the Jungle Jump – a massive inflated pillow designed to catch you when you take a leap of faith from one of three levels
Jungle Canopy takes an idea often seen in actual jungles or rainforests – a zipline park. It has you safely hooked up while you take on a number of obstacles about 15 feet above the floor
Similarly the Hawk is an electric flying fox that has thrill seekers strapped into a harnessed chair eight metres up and takes them on 140m journey snaking above and around the premises
The Gorilla Warrior Ninja Course test your skill at swinging from rope to beam – the floor isn't lava luckily
but padded foam. And Tribal Climb is a complete indoor rock climbing experience with harnesses and auto-belay system so that kids can safely scale quite high walls. There's also a Junior Parkour circuit
and a Cub's Junior Play pen for toddlers.
In January 2023 the Jungle opened its Mini Golf Safari offering
This 16-hole putt putt has an exotica/pirate treasure theme with obstacles including a carved totem poles

Brisbane City Council has provided a new Flood Information Online tool that allows the user to see flood affected land around Brisbane and compare the data to the 2011 and 1974 flood data
The unexpected flooding that caused damage to thousands of homes in February 2022 has been added to a new flood map for Brisbane. Brisbane City Council’s new Flood Information Online tool provides an interactive online flood tool designed to make finding information easier
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the new interactive online flood tool has been designed to make it easier for residents to use and find the information that matters
“The online hub gives residents the latest flood information in a new-look interactive way so it is easier for people to visually understand flooding and how it may affect where they live or work”
“We are making sure Council’s best available flood risk information is available to anyone who wants it at the click of a button”
“To generate the new maps there were nearly 1100 on the ground surveys completed
alongside 21 hydrology models and 21 hydraulic models”
“The new Flood Awareness Map has been updated to better display information with clearer navigation
and improved functionality across devices”
“The online tool also includes a new historic flood layer displaying the extent of the February 2022 flood with mapping for both river and creek flooding included,” Cr Schrinner said
The Council has used the best tools and technology available to deliver the most comprehensive and user-friendly maps
The new Flood Data will influence results in the following online documents:– FloodWise Property– Flood Overlay in Brisbane City Plan– Flood Awareness Map
Link to the Interactive Flood Awareness Maps Or for more information on the Flood Awareness Maps
The updated FloodWise Property Report will be easier for residents to visually understand how flooding may affect a property for building
development and be able to access the best possible information in flood education and awareness
“More than 540,000 residents downloaded property reports between January and May this year so we know this update will be a popular feature for residents wanting to be better prepared”
but we can be better prepared and these new flood maps will help residents have a better understanding and be better prepared”
“Understanding the risk of flooding helps people not get caught off guard and gives them the time to better design and plan for any risk,” Cr Schrinner said
“More than 11,750 residents have signed up for the free alerts since the February flood event
but it remains important if you’re not registered to sign up so you can be prepared,” Cr Schrinner said
The Council competition offering a range of prizes
is still open for anyone who signs up before 1 December 2022

He acknowledges the decision “was not made lightly — with a range of emotions
along with an extensive amount of due diligence with regard to the best interests of my valued clients”
Mr Auer has also been recognised by Harcourts for his former career in IT services and sales — as well as his status as an “accomplished renovator”
and we spent a lot of time together on building sites
I learnt many handyman skills over the years
giving me the practical background to ensure my real estate advice to clients is backed by hands-on experience,” he shared
Harcourts Queensland chief executive Mitch Peereboom said Mr Auer’s move into the group is “a massive coup for us”
“Scott is the market-leading agent in Tingalpa
and we are thrilled to welcome him and his team to the group,” he stated
Mr Auer will continue to sell throughout the bayside suburbs of Tingalpa
and adjoining suburbs alongside his sales associate
and we could not be prouder that he has chosen to join forces with the ever-growing team at Harcourts Inner East,” Mr Peereboom shared
the new role will see him maintain his commitment to doing the best for both his clients and the local community
As well as professing himself as a proud supporter of Tingalpa State School

Five Brisbane suburbs where median prices are under $1m have been named among the hottest for price booms in the coming year
Finder’s Property Investment Index results come just as a survey found Brisbane residents among the most likely of all capitals to believe prices are set for more rises
Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker found 26 per cent of Brisbane residents thought price growth would be “significant” over the next year
while only 16 per cent of people thought prices would fall
Tingalpa scored highly for homes priced under $750,000
Finder’s Property Investment Index Brisbane used criteria including market demand and price growth as well as demographics to measure every suburb by investment potential
was the highest-ranked entry-level housing market
scoring 89 of a possible 100 points on the index
Other best picks for houses priced under $750,000 were Yamanto and Tingalpa (86 points each)
Lutwyche (94 points) and McDowall (92 points) were topscoring suburbs priced between $750,000 and $1m
This Lutwyche home is marketed by Belle property group
said Brisbane’s outer northern suburbs presented excellent value for investors
“These suburban areas are great pockets to be in if you are wanting to raise a family
three hospitals within a 5km radius and a small commute to the CBD,” Ms Johnson said
She said McDowall in particular offered “more bang for your buck”
with larger block sizes than surrounding areas such as Kedron
“We are starting to see more stock each month
We had about six per cent more listings last month compared with the one before
but when you are considering insurance premiums and rates going up
you do have to be smarter with your purchases
there is a quick turnover in the townhouse and villa market as people want to downsize
but I’m also seeing a lot of first-home buyers now that we have gotten over that massive fear of missing out and reached the other side of that,” she said
Investment criteria included market demand and price growth as well as demographics
McDowall homeowner Jayne Manssen just sold her three-bedroom townhouse and said she’d prefer to rent in the same area until she is able to purchase another property rather than move away
The shift worker bought the property for $368,000 in 2017
and it was snapped up for $560,000 following a four-week marketing campaign with Ms Johnson
The sale price was the highest achieved for the complex
while the rental appraisal of $590 per week for the property was particularly strong
Ms Manssen negotiated a long settlement while she continues her search for a smaller home close by
Cheaper to buy than rent in more than half of QLD suburbs
Where the rental crisis has hit hardest
She describes McDowall as a “best-kept secret”
providing convenient access to her work at South Brisbane but also surrounded by walking trails and bushland
“I love living there so I’m looking to reinvest in the area,” Ms Manssen said
although I have said I will leave earlier if I find something
“I have also considered renting in the area and taking a step out of the market for six months in the hope that prices will go down,” she said

“We’re having a lunch room sit-in because the company is refusing the pay us for the day – they want us to work for free”, he says. The protesting workers are part of the day shift and started their sit-in at around 7:30am this morning. Brett says they plan on staying put until the next shift comes in. It is expected that those workers will be locked out by management.
“The plant’s not running while the majority of us are sitting in the lunch room. It’s exciting. As the hours go by hopefully it gets more exciting.”
The dispute is about current enterprise agreement negotiations. The decision to sit-in came after workers tried to implement partial work bans to pressure the company for a better deal.
Brett explains: “We voted up action and today was our first day of action. We actually came to work to put in paperwork bans, and truckloading bans and an over time ban and the company said they’re not going to pay us for any work at all. So we’ve decided to have the sit in.”
“We’re fighting for a fair deal for all Tingalpa workers – especially the casual workers who get paid less for the same work”, he says. “We want a pay increase, a decent pay increase and we especially want to see the casual workers who get paid less get paid the same.”
They want labour-hire workers on the same rates too. “They get paid $200 a week less than us which causes a lot of animosity between them and the full-time and part-time staff. We want to make sure they get paid the same as us so that everyone’s job is more secure.”
The mood among the protesting workers is “really good”, according to Brett. They’re making banners and placards. “People are quite excited, a lot of people think this has been a long time coming. Some of these workers have been here for 30 to 35 years.”
Of the company’s response to their action, Brett says: “They have come back in to talk to the members and all they did was re-read a letter that they offered yesterday which was a slight increase to the percentage [wage increase] that we’re asking for but no change to the rest of the EBA.”
Brett says that the day shift has been in touch with the afternoon shift workers who will start arriving at around 2pm. “Afternoon shift is the biggest shift and the most active of the lot of them. We suspect when the afternoon shift come in not too many of them will actually try and come to work.”
“The day shift has already been asked to leave. We chose to stay here and we’re waiting for them to make the next move. As soon as they kick us out we expect a rally to start.”
The National Union of Workers is asking for support for a **rally outside the gates** as the afternoon shift arrives at 2pm. If you can get to Smith's (1331 Wynnum Road, Tingalpa) at **1.45pm TODAY, Thursday**, to show solidarity, that would be much appreciated by the workers.

Dallin James Kruithof has been accused of killing Tweed Heads man Russell Johnstone
Mr Johnstone was found with gunshot wounds to his head
He was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital where he later died.
Kruithof, of Mount Gravatt East, was remanded in custody after appearing in the Cleveland Magistrates Court.
His lawyer said the allegations would be defended.
Detective Inspector Owen Elloy said the arrest followed an extensive investigation.
"Today's development is the culmination of six months of intense investigations by members of the Cleveland and Wynnum Criminal Investigation Branches and State Crime Command's Homicide Squad," he said.
"I've been in the police for 35 years, I spent four of those years in the homicide squad. Without a doubt this is the most intense investigations I've ever been involved with over the six-month period."
