Following a state-wide consultation process with clinicians for the Satellite Hospital Program (SHP)
the Tugun Satellite Hospital will now be called Tugun Satellite Health Centre
A survey was conducted to select a new name after feedback that the satellite facilities' names were confusing
The Tugun Satellite Health Centre will retain its Aboriginal co-name: “Banyahrmabah”
which when translated from Yugambeh language to English means “a place to be made healthy”
These centres will continue to deliver the same trusted care including minor injury and illness care and outpatient services from dedicated nurses
If you have a health condition or injury that is not life-threatening such as such as simple fractures, simple infections and allergies, sprains, strains and minor burns, the Tugun Satellite Health Centre is open 8am-10pm
Anyone in the community needing health care can access the satellite health centres
with minor injury and illness clinic offering a drop-in model similar to the emergency department while outpatient services are facilitated via referral pathways
always call Triple Zero (000) or visit an emergency department at Gold Coast University Hospital or Robina Hospital

2025There’s a quiet buzz about Tugun these days
A little slower than its neighbours Currumbin and Burleigh Heads
this beachside suburb leans into its laid-back
It’s the kind of place where you can stroll along Golden Four Drive with a coffee in hand
and grab a bite to eat – all on the same cruisy stretch
adding some serious flavour to the mix is Palomino’s Deli
a small-but-mighty cafe that’s quickly earning its stripes on the Gold Coast food scene
The Gold Coast isn’t typically known for its deli culture
one slice of mortadella at a time thanks to Zayne Stoner
a Melbourne native with a love of old-school vinyl
community connection and really great sandwiches
Despite having only opened in October of last year
Palomino’s Deli feels like the kind of place that has been here forever – yet somehow still feels like a secret you’re lucky to be in on
where delis are practically a rite of passage
Zayne saw a gap in the Gold Coast food landscape
Alongside co-owner Josh Bainbridge and collaborator James Hurlston (who helped shape the menu and space)
Zayne transformed a former Mexican eatery into something entirely new
“I was actually trying to do this in Bali originally,” he says
“But then this space popped up and I just… went for it.”
Zayne sent a mate to inspect the Tugun venue
got a walkthrough video and jumped on a plane
he was signing papers – without a solid plan for a menu
just the loose idea that he wanted to open a deli
Despite having never worked in hospitality before
“But it all comes down to making people feel welcome
right?” And that’s precisely how you will feel as you step foot inside the tiny cafe
With the help of mates and some DIY tutorials
Zayne tackled most of the venue’s fit-out himself
The aesthetic is inspired by iconic delis around the world – think Bambino in Paris
a record-spinning vibe and a scattering of low stools to pull up a perch while you wait
Palomino’s doesn’t try to do everything – just a few things really well
is anchored by one superstar – the egg roll
melty cheddar and grilled deli meats like mortadella or sopressa
it’s developed something of a cult following
“People are devastated when they miss the 10am cut-off,” Zayne admits
A classic BLT rounds out the morning offerings
keeping to the venue’s ethos of simplicity
there’s just two rolls to choose from – the American and the Italian
The American is Zayne’s love letter to Jersey-style deli sandwiches
ranch dressing and as many meats as you want
Just be sure to order a serve of crispy fries that are dusted with a seriously addictive secret salt
Subscribe for updatesWhile some places reject variations
the staff are only too happy to tell you about their favourite combinations
Palomino’s pours Allpress – a cult classic in its own right
But if you’re in the mood for something stronger
there’s a curated clutch of beers – American Coors
Zayne and the team have big plans for the small space
starting with arvo sessions complete with tapas
hopefully in the latter half of this year Zayne tells us

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on the Pacific Motorway at the Tugun Bypass Tunnel from Monday to carry out essential maintenance work
The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 8pm to 5am AEDT each night from Monday
On the nights of Monday 17 and Thursday 20 February
northbound traffic will be diverted at the Gold Coast Highway (Tugun exit) onto Tugun Currumbin Road
rejoining the Pacific Motorway at Currumbin
Southbound traffic will be diverted at Tugun Currumbin Road (exit 95) onto Gold Coast Highway
rejoining the Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads West (Gold Coast Highway on-ramp)
On the nights of Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 February
northbound traffic will detour via Kennedy Drive (Tweed Heads exit)
Sugarwood Drive/Gold Coast Highway and Tugun Currumbin Road
re-joining the Pacific Motorway at Currumbin
Southbound traffic will be diverted via Tugun Currumbin Road (exit 95)
re-joining the Pacific Motorway at Tweed Heads West (Kennedy Drive on-ramp)
The traffic diversions are suitable for all vehicle types
Motorists are advised to allow up to five minutes’ additional travel time
drive to the conditions and follow the direction of signs and traffic control
Routine maintenance of the tunnel is carried out every three months and involves a range of measures such as inspecting the various operating and safety systems
Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience while this essential maintenance work is carried out

A longstanding issue causing major disruptions for heavy vehicle operators on the Pacific Motorway has been permanently resolved with the installation of new technology and truck turnaround areas at the Tugun Bypass tunnel
overheight trucks occasionally bypassed warning signs and became stuck at the tunnel entrances
particularly when approaching from Queensland
these drivers were forced to reverse up to four kilometres with the assistance of Transport for NSW
and police from both states—a process that caused significant delays
With the completion of this infrastructure upgrade
overheight vehicles will now be detected earlier and have designated turnaround areas closer to both tunnel entrances
implemented during scheduled maintenance closures over the past two years
and variable speed limit signs to halt overheight trucks before they reach the tunnel
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison highlighted the benefits of the project
made possible by investment from the NSW Government
“With the investment from the Minns Labor Government
overheight vehicles should never reach the tunnel
they can be turned around with help from the Tugun incident response officer or a single police officer,” Minister Aitchison said
“The time and cost savings from this change are enormous and it will mean the lengthy delays when an overheight vehicle inadvertently entered the tunnel are a thing of the past
“Transport for NSW put in new overheight detection systems to notify staff of a vehicle approaching the tunnel
so they can immediately activate variable speed limit signs to stop them reaching the tunnel
“We’ve also installed five new advance warning signs and new traffic lights just short of where we’ve put in new heavy vehicle crossovers.”
straddles the New South Wales-Queensland border
The project was completed through close collaboration between authorities in both states
“The project has improved advance warning technology as well as the infrastructure
so if any overheight vehicles did get past the advance warning systems
they would be stopped and able to turn around at the entrance to the tunnel,” Minister Aitchison added
the risk of overheight trucks blocking the Tugun Bypass tunnel is now significantly reduced
improving safety and efficiency for all motorists using the key interstate corridor
Transport for NSW has revealed new technology and truck turning areas have been successfully installed at the Tugun bypass tunnel to help prevent overheight vehicles getting stuck
The completion of the works should solve the “rare but highly disruptive” problem of overheight drivers slip past warning signs prior to the tunnel’s entrance
Should the overheight drivers reach the tunnel
previously they would have had to reverse their rig four kilometres back up the motorway before they could turn around
New advance warning signs have been installed alongside a turning area closer to the tunnel
meaning overheight drivers will not have to back up such a significant distance
“We’ve also installed five new advance warning signs and new traffic lights just short of where we’ve put in new heavy vehicle crossovers
“The Tugun tunnel goes underneath Coolangatta Airport
with the southern end of the tunnel in NSW and the northern end in Queensland
and we had great collaboration with the Queensland authorities to get the work done
they would be stopped and able to turn around at the tunnel entrance.”
Most of the work to fix the issue was carried out over two years during quarterly maintenance tunnel closures to minimise impacts to motorists
The turning areas have been installed close to both the southbound and northbound entrances of the tunnel

A CoastSnap station at Elephant Rock in Tugun Beach
People can contribute to Cyclone Alfred beach recovery efforts through a citizen science photo project founded by UNSW researchers called CoastSnap
As parts of Australia’s east coast get on with the clean-up from Cyclone Alfred
there’s a simple way anyone can take part in coastal recovery
thanks to a project started by UNSW researchers
There are more than 600 CoastSnap stations placed at beaches across the world
Many of these stations monitor pockets of Australia’s eastern coastline affected by the recent weather event
you place your phone in the cradle (pictured at the top of this page)
follow some prompts and upload the picture to a database
The photos are then modified by software to replicate photos taken from space and can be superimposed on actual satellite imagery
the photos are valuable for monitoring the width of a beach
Mitchell Harley
Associate Professor with UNSW’s School of Civil & Environmental Engineering and a co-founder of CoastSnap
says anyone with a smartphone can contribute and the more the merrier
where we can basically crowd-source and harness all of the smartphones that people have in their pockets
to get these eyes on the ground and get a lot more visual records of the changes up and down the coast
can be “equivalent to things you get from professional survey techniques”
Over 100,000 photos taken for CoastSnap since 2017 have helped provide a continuous picture of beaches for UNSW’s Water Research Laboratory (WRL). The photos are open-source and placed on a world map on the CoastSnap website
Timelapse video taken by the WRL for the City of Gold Coast during the weekend Alfred hit
just after it was officially downgraded to an east coast low
shows a steady surge eating away at the coastline
Harley says continued efforts to use CoastSnap are important
the east coast lows… that’s where we can see these really extreme effects… clusters of back-to-back storms that keep eroding the beach and there’s no opportunity for that recovery phase to kick in.”
He says documenting the recovery phase through CoastSnap is vital for preparation against the next event
“Having those regular snaps really helps us understand how quickly beaches recover
Some beaches may recover in a matter of a few months
“You’re contributing to a dataset without having to do much.”
“We had fixed cameras at certain locations … but [that event] really showed us we had lots of gaps,” A/Prof
monitoring that area was a success and became CoastSnap
Harley says there hasn’t been an erosion event on the scale of Collaroy until Alfred
a network of stations across the country gives the WRL a 'wealth of data' to assist its research
to detect when a sandbank has eroded far enough to let them legally dredge up sand from elsewhere and top it up
“That was all being informed by the community images
You have community collecting the data that are informing the decisions that affect the community.”
One CoastSnap station, at the request of the NSW government
monitors a shipwreck at Woolgoolga on the state’s mid-north coast that reveals itself after major storms
Alfred was the latest event to bring the 'Buster' wreck out into the open
CoastSnap’s journey out to international waters has also provided other uses for the cradles. The project monitors a harmful form of seaweed called sargassum in the Caribbean, West Africa and Mexico
beaches itself and completely disrupts the tourism and fishing industry
[These places] are really interested in understanding these events,” A/Prof
Artificial intelligence is complementing CoastSnap in many ways
from speeding up processes to providing even more uses for the photos
“There are new algorithms being processed which just allow us to do what we were doing a few years ago much faster and more accurately.”
A/Prof. Harley is also working with Surf Lifesaving Australia on an app that uses CoastSnap photos to detect rips
The amount of images available through the project is a valuable asset for helping AI detect the currents
Harley encourages people to be a part of CoastSnap where they find it
“What we find is that once you build up that visual record
then forever more we have that record to inform policy.”

Tugun Satellite Hospital (Banyahrmabah) has celebrated its first birthday
marking one year since the Minor Injury and Illness Clinic opened on 15 November 2023.
the hospital has become a vital part of the Gold Coast Health network
walk-in urgent care and specialised services that have collectively recorded more than 30,000 presentations.
Nurse Unit Manager for Tugun’s Minor Injury and Illness Clinic Caroline West said she had an amazing team who worked extremely well together.
“We have a great relationship with the community
and we provide an outstanding service – we should all be proud of what we’ve created,” Caroline said.
The clinic saw 20,006 presentations in its first year
the Kidney Dialysis Unit began operation and has since delivered 1,756 treatments to meet growing community demand.
with 3,187 patients accessing physiotherapy
social work and psychology since opening.
which has already provided 1,760 patients with infusion therapies.
Have your say on a new name for Tugun Satellite Hospital
While Tugun Satellite Hospital continues to deliver exceptional care, staff and the community are invited to have their say on a new name for satellite hospitals via an online survey. Queensland Health will establish a clinical advisory group to review the consultation findings.
A name change is designed to help reduce confusion and ensure more patients can access the care they need
when and where they need it. The commitment to consulting clinicians on a new name is a part of the Queensland Government’s 100-day plan.
The survey closes 20 December and only takes a few minutes to complete. For more information visit the website.

Tugun Plans Lead Gold Coast Townhouse UpsurgeTUD+ Member Only Content
The Tugun Satellite Health Centre (Banyahrmabah) healing garden continues to flourish with the addition of a new sandblasting feature at the base of its existing First Nations public art and yarning circle
Developed in consultation with First Nations Elders and Wurundjeri artist Grace Brown
the new feature extends Grace’s original artwork
depicting Aboriginal motifs inspired by the region's medicinal plants and traditional bush foods
The artwork is named “Banyahr jagun Banyahr garal janabi nyubani”
which can be translated to mean “Healthy Country - Healthy Community”
the sandblasting feature also serves a functional purpose by providing weather protection for the space
ensuring its longevity for future generations
“The selected texture and colour reflect the natural environment and provide a grounding quality,” Grace said
connection and a safe place for physical and emotional healing
“I am so happy the space has continued to evolve and is so well received by the community - this collaborative process has created a meaningful physical space while nurturing emotional and relational connections.”
the connection to Country through art and place is fundamental to healing,” Paula said
“This co-design process exemplifies Gold Coast Health’s commitment to listening to the voices of our community
ensuring that First Nations perspectives shape the spaces and services we offer
“The garden enhancements are a testament to sustainable
respectful design that honours and supports the ongoing connection to culture to support community health and wellbeing.”
Tugun Satellite Hospital has been renamed Tugun Satellite Health Centre
It retains its Yugambeh language co-name: Banyahrmabah
This change reflects the health centre’s dedication to supporting the physical
and relational wellbeing of the community while ensuring that culturally safe care is at the heart of all services provided
The Tugun Satellite Hospital – co-named Banyahrmabah
meaning “a place to be made healthy” – has wrapped up its phased service expansion with the opening of its Day Medical Unit
The new Day Medical Unit provides specialised services for a variety of non-chemotherapy infusions to treat deficiencies like anaemia
and intravenously administer medications for autoimmune conditions and infectious diseases
Gold Coast resident Dave Hooper was among the first patients to experience the treatments offered at Tugun Day Medical Unit for his digestive condition
I receive an intravenous (IV) infusion treatment of Infliximab for an autoimmune disease that impacts my bowels," Dave said.
I used to have to travel to the Gold Coast University Hospital to receive this treatment
“Thanks to these regular infusions and an easy trip to the new Day Medical Unit
like reconnecting with my running club mates.”
The GCUH Day Medical Unit and the Day Medical Unit at Tugun Satellite Hospital will collectively offer 15 treatment chairs
operating Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 5pm
Day Medical Unit said across both facilities
with at least nine stationed at the Tugun location
“This service will improve the quality of life for more patients
as they can stay actively involved with their families and friends
without requiring hospital admissions," Brandi said.
“We see a wide range of medical and surgical patients
including those with neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis
We also see those with inflammatory bowel disease
“These patients are generally well enough to be seen in the community setting
spending anywhere from an hour to eight hours with us
The completion of the phased service expansion coincides with Tugun Satellite Hospital (Banyahrmabah) surpassing 10,000 patients treated at the Minor Injury and Illness Clinic
more than 11,700 patients have received care closer to home
The most common reason for presentations is limb or joint pain
followed by coughs and treatment for lacerations
The installation of new technology and truck turning areas at the Tugun bypass tunnel has solved a problem for heavy vehicle drivers on the Pacific Motorway
Drivers of over height vehicles would sometimes slip past warning signs and find themselves stuck at the northbound or southbound tunnel entrances
Drivers were at times made to reverse their truck four kilometres back up the motorway before they could turn around if they approached the tunnel from the north side
Transport and Main Roads Queensland and the police forces of the two states to was needed
over height vehicles should never reach the tunnel
they can be turned around with help from the Tugun incident response officer or a single police officer,” says transport minister Jenny Aitchison
“The time and cost savings from this change are enormous and it will mean the lengthy delays when an over height vehicle inadvertently entered the tunnel are a thing of the past
“Transport for NSW put in new over height detection systems to notify staff of a vehicle approaching the tunnel
Five new advanced warning signs and traffic lights have now been installed just short of where the new heavy vehicle crossovers are
If any operators do happen to go past the warning signs
they will only have to reverse a short distance up the highway to reach an area where they can cross over
most of the work to fix the issue was carried out over two years during the quarterly maintenance tunnel closures

The first question the players under 20 years of age asked when he started barking instructions in the Tugun Seahawks preseason was: 'Who is this lunatic?'
But when they heard about the CV of Billy Johnstone - the Queensland Maroons strength and conditioning coach from 1998-2009 - they quickly got a grasp of what everyone else already knew they were in for
with the Seahawks claiming the massive scalp of defending premiers Southport Tigers with a 24-16 win away from home on Saturday
The defeat was the Tigers' first since April 2023 and for many Seahawks players and fans it was sweet revenge for the grand final loss to them last year
Tugun's win was more impressive doing so without former NSW State of Origin hooker Nathan Peats
who has brought vast experience to the club this season
along with former Gold Coast Titans halfback Kane Elgey
coaxed back to his junior club after a hiatus from the game
Seahawks captain-coach Will Johnstone said his dad's methods were a shock to some to start with
with Billy also involved as a League Safe trainer and working with those working back from injury
but the boys now they actually love it and we've instilled that culture of hard work and he loves it as well because he hasn't been involved in rugby league for a few years
and for him to be back in rugby league and working with me as well
it's a great opportunity for him," Will said
"But it's a great opportunity for some of these young local fellas to work with someone who has worked at his level
they had no idea who he was and they just thought he was some old fella who was half crazy to be honest and once they got to know who he was..
"It's great he can give back his knowledge to the local club
but whenever he does speak and puts his two cents in
Will had known Elgey since their school days and said he and Peats had added to making the club culture even better in 2024
"He's had a couple of years out of the game
but the opportunity to come back to play for his junior club - and he's got a young family himself
a young boy and the chance for (his son) to see Kane play..
and he's a really experienced footballer but he's also just a really good bloke to have around
always puts his two cents in and he's not just there to play and get out of there
He's great on the community side and he's got a young family as well."
Will is passing down his knowledge in other areas too
as a teacher involved in the rugby league program at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School and as a coach in the 'Baby Hawks' program
"It's a stark difference going from the four-year-olds to A grade men," he said
While the A grade form will create some excitement through the year
it's what is happening off the field that really turns heads
will be a fundraiser for MND with the A grade and reserves wearing MND Footy Socks
It will double with junior-senior engagement with under 7 players also wearing the socks
running out with the senior team and joining the fun in the sheds post-game
A few weeks later on July 20 is Ladies Day
when Tugun hosts local rivals Currumbin and raise money for The Sanctuary Women
The Seahawks have raised more than $45,000 for the Gold Coast-based charity over the past three years
A grade players will be wearing pink just about from head to toe
with jerseys to be auctioned off following their match
while off the field the ladies will enjoy lunch
Tickets are $50 and can be purchased from bar staff at the Tugun Leagues Club
People who want to know more or anyone who wants to donate to the mega raffle for the day should contact Karen Denny 0416019777
"It always drags in a big crowd when Tugun play Currumbin
so hopefully Ladies Day can be massive this year," Will said
They're not the biggest club by any means but they make it count with the stuff they do in the community."
The whole package is something Will loves being part of and he hoped it would all help be a positive influence on the young people coming through the grades
Very few people go on to do it as a profession and do it at the highest level
and I think the majority of what rugby league is about
is it's about that community and community clubs and fostering a good environment for young people to be healthy and play team sport together," he said

Mick Fanning and partner Breeana Randall have sold one of their Gold Coast properties
Surf legend Mick Fanning’s designer beachside home has sold in a hushed big-ticket deal after making waves as the most viewed property scheduled to go under the hammer this weekend
But the auction date was scrapped as a frenzy to claim the keys erupted
with a cash buyer eventually sucessful following a “multiple offer situation”
The three-time world champion surfer’s unique Tugun investment property
had attracted huge interest through the campaign
with more clicks on realestate.com.au than any other property in the nation scheduled for auction this week
Several buyers fought it out to claim keys to the designer pad before it went under the hammer
It was the nation’s hottest upcoming auction and most-viewed property in Queensland for three weeks
It had also been the most-viewed home for sale in Queensland for the past two weeks
with Ms Canning noting buyer interest had peaked as the auction date neared
it is understood the sellers had made a decent profit on their $3m purchase in 2021
Mr Canning declined to comment on the specifics of the deal or the buyer’s identity
“The interest in this property had been really high and had ramped up in those final days before the auction
but there were a number of buyers who had conditional interest and the decision was made to give all buyers the opportunity to put their best foot forward,” Ms Canning said

The indoor skate ramp and sauna were lifestyle perks
Fierce negotations had extended through the day before contracts were inked
“A big appeal about this house was that it’s a huge block and so the buyer is creating a big opportunity for themselves long-term

The Pyxis system is the first of its kind to be implemented in the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service (GCHHS) and Griffith University alumnus and Senior Pharmacist Lisa Hill led the implementation.
“The digitisation and automation of medication management is making a massive impact on the way health professionals can provide care,” Mrs Hill said.
“We’ve been training the Tugun Satellite Hospital staff to use the automated system and there’s a buzz of excitement.
“Usually, the process of medication management involves two staff members manually counting the entire stock of controlled medications multiple times a day as the staffing shift changes.
“Staff are also responsible for dispensing correct dosage, record keeping, and documentation.
“The Pyxis medication management system automates the distribution, management, and storage of medication within the hospital.
“Without so much manual management and paperwork to do, staff can concentrate on providing care to patients.
“The new system reduces medical errors, reduces wastage, and it reduces time spent managing controlled substances.
“Staff are excited about the big impact it will have on their workload.”
As a clinical educator at the GCHHS, Mrs Hill is passionate about improving pharmacy services by developing the workforce and implementing innovative solutions to improve care.
After completing a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science at Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, Mrs Hill continued her education to complete a Master of Pharmacy, and then went on to complete a Master of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of Queensland.
