Her comments follow Labor infrastructure spokesperson Anita Dow's request to Premier Jeremy Rockliff for an explanation into the roadworks
"Premier Rockliff must provide businesses and the local community with the latest information on repairs to the damaged Bass Highway off-ramps into Ulverstone," Ms Dow said
industry and the local community have been inconvenienced by traffic delays and reduced speed limits
"No update has been provided to the community
and I understand Central Coast Council have not been given an update either."

Infrastructure Minister Kerry Vincent said he acknowledged the community and industry concerns following the crash
did not provide an update on when repairs would begin
"The damage to the bridge railings is extensive and requires the replacement of the bridge railing that complies with structural engineering and safety requirements," he said
"I've tasked the Department of State Growth to get this work done as soon as possible."

with supporters applying to have them heritage listed
All articles from our website & appThe digital version of Today's PaperBreaking news alerts direct to your inboxInteractive Crosswords, Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueThat could delay or even halt the Central Coast Council's plan to remove the trees from Risby Street
Lawyer Glynn Williams lodged the application with the Heritage Council on March 28
arborist Chris Konkes and Greens Montgomery candidate Darren Briggs want heritage protection for the elm trees in Risby Street
Picture by Eve Woodhouse"I thought I'd better step forward and volunteer," Mr Williams said
The trees are believed to have been planted about 80 years ago
"It's a very significant avenue and they're a very rare tree in general
certainly a rare tree in Ulverstone," Mr Williams said
He said oral histories were being prepared and the history around the trees' planting lent itself to "achieving the necessary cultural and heritage criteria" for heritage listing
Some residents want the trees saved and others want them removed
The council says the trees have damaged street infrastructure
It wants to replace them with a smaller species
The council was questioned about the issue at a recent meeting
In response to residents wanting the trees retained subject to safety
the council said it agreed about the benefits trees provided and placed a high value on "our green assets"
"The existing trees have caused damage to the infrastructure along Risby Street," infrastructure services director Nick Browne said in the response
recognising the value placed on these trees
council's original concept design for the reconstruction of this street made an effort to preserve all but two of the trees and included the provision of engineering solutions to minimise future damage by the trees
it became apparent that whilst the community wanted to retain trees along the street
they held concerns with the existing trees."
Mr Browne said the council engaged an independent arborist to assess the elms
Their advice recommended removing them all and suggested suitable replacement trees
"Given that the community opinion and expert advice both aligned with replacement of the trees
council has proceeded down this pathway," Mr Browne said
"Whilst we understand that removal of these specific trees is unfortunate
the project will replace the trees with a species chosen to provide all of the benefits you have mentioned whilst minimising their future impact on property and infrastructure."
The council said its plans to remove and replace the trees were unchanged
but it would await the Heritage Council's advice
Asked what would happen if there were safety issues with some elms in the meantime
the council said they posed no risk to the community at present
public safety is Central Coast Council's top priority," it said
appropriate action will be taken to ensure community safety."
It said removing trees was always a last resort and never done lightly
no feasible alternatives to their removal and renewal have been identified," it said
Elm trees supporter Darren Briggs - the Greens' Montgomery candidate - said people wanting them kept were asking what else could be done to save them
He said street trees had been found to provide economic
mental health and aesthetic benefits for the community
Dr Briggs said benefits included increased house prices
reduced traffic speeds and reduced stormwater runoff
and you'll notice some of the gutters and footpaths are undulating," he said
"There are lots of different reasons for it
"There are definitely engineering alternatives that can be explored."
Dr Briggs was keen to hear about further information
photography and stories relating to the Risby Street elms that could support the heritage listing application
He asked people with such material to contact elmsofrisby@gmail.com or 0427627443

two indoor playrooms and a nappy change area are proposed for a new childcare centre at Ulverstone

which would be found at 3 Leven Street across from Ulverstone Primary School
It would have a capacity of 50 children and five full-time staff and would see the existing building altered and refurbished with a proposed extension
which is currently zoned as residential and is surrounded by other homes
will see proposed operation hours from 6.30am to 6.30pm from Monday to Friday
In the development application to the Central Coast Council there are a number of proposals listed to minimise the impact of noise on the adjoining buildings between these hours
This includes the installation of a sound barrier
glazed windows and the times in which children are allowed to play outside
with no children allowed in the outdoor play area prior to 7am or after 6pm
which included a traffic impact assessment
found that "traffic of the proposed development will have minimal impact on the surrounding environment"
It said traffic would be primarily short-stay associated with parents dropping off or picking-up children
the residence is within school and sports precinct facilities with more traffic regulations controlled by respective uses," the report said
Floor plan for a proposed childcare centre at Ulverstone
Engineers and Planners.Council approval is being sought to change the use of the four bedroom corner home to education and occasional care
It was noted in the application that there is a strong need for childcare centres across the North-West region
"And this location near an existing school is deemed appropriate due to existing infrastructure," it said
"The impact of subject childcare centre is anticipated to be more beneficial than harm the adjacent sensitive use."
The application follows the Central Coast Council's decision, at it's closed September meeting
to continue to provide childcare services but leave expansion to the private sector - upgrading its existing facilities but not investing in new ones

An allegedly out-of-control car has sparked a power outage that at its peak affected around 1,000 homes in the Ulverstone area
The vehicle ran over an electrical turret on Ocean Drive and caught fire on Saturday evening
“We’ve had to cut supply as a safety precaution,” TasNetworks said
“We’ll restore power as soon as possible.”
Video from the scene shows the vehicle engulfed in flames and rapid explosions heard popping from the wreck
TasNetworks has since restored power to around 900 customers
They say those people may be off for several more hours and possibly overnight
“The fuel tank of the car appears to have exploded and the fire service still needs safe
“We’ll seek to SMS any customers who’ll be without power overnight.”

Picture by David BellamyA new way of moving is on its way to Ulverstone
The husband and wife team said they've been sitting on the idea to open a studio for a few years now
but have spent the last 12 months putting the vision into reality
"Naturally over the years the business had taken a turn to what people are wanting and the demand of what is going to keep them happy and moving," Mrs Capel said
"We've been pretty aware Ulverstone doesn't have anything like this."
The pilates studio will take the space of the waiting and reception area of the Alexandra Road gym
with construction underway on the new space
It's expected the studio will have between eight to 10 reformer beds and will open at the end of January
Mrs Capel said the studio will offer a low-impact style of training that focuses on strength
"It's about connecting to your body in a slower-paced manner that is guided more closely by instructors," she said
"It focuses on keeping the body fully aligned and being consciously aware of your body through a slow and controlled style of movement."
The Capels are expecting to open the new Pilates studio at the end of January
Picture by David BellamyMrs Capel said since having her 18-month-old son Paddy
pilates has been a way for her to move her body and regain her strength in a safe and sustainable way
The new reformer Pilates studio will be a first for Ulverstone
with most people having to travel to Devonport or Burnie for their movement fix
The Capels already own a studio in Launceston
but are very keen to have one closer to home
Mrs Capel said there had been a "really positive" response about the new studio
"I think people are really excited about not having to travel or being able to fit in something if it's closer to their home," she said
The reformer classes are expected to have an athletic and fast-paced style while still being suitable for beginners
Mr Capel said the new studio will complement the style of training already available at Balanced
which focuses on a mix of strength and cardio based fitness classes
"Everyone likes flexibility these days," he said
"Everyone likes to mix up their training so we just feel like both spaces really complement each other."
Mrs Capel said they are in the process of hiring instructors who will also bring their own strengths and styles to the classes
Revving up for another great year of trucks
Tasmania’s quiet streets were filled with the thunder of engines at the Ulverstone Truck Show in early November
a parade of gleaming rigs has continued to enter the Ulverstone Showgrounds
and this year 40 mighty machines cruised on in
combined with the local ‘Thank You Show’ saw a great turnout
thanks to the generosity of those that attended
crowds gathered in the Central Coast of Tassie to raise funds and awareness for mental health by donating to Beyond Blue and New Mornings
But the trucks that rolled in weren’t just big machines on wheels – they each had stories of history and craftsmanship behind them
Event organiser Kevin Hind took on the challenge of running the show for the first time and was satisfied with the results of the day and the trucks that rolled through the gates
“There were a couple of B-model Macks and various other trucks of all shapes and sizes – old rigs
with local craft stalls providing a unique opportunity to showcase their wares
It was a great mix of trucks and a vibrant atmosphere
with Ulverstone Truck Show also featuring a balloon and bubble room
they come from miles away from Ulverstone to get involved,” he says
A small selection of awards were handed out
adding a sense of friendly competition to the festivities
and with the community’s support behind them
it seems the Ulverstone Truck show is here to stay and will continue putting smiles on the people of Tassie’s faces

The company has lodged a development application with the Central Coast Council to give its factory a $1.5 million upgrade
which it says will eliminate 80 per cent of the particulate produced by the existing frying operations
The proposed development would see a new wet electrostatic precipitator installed to treat the exhaust from the existing factory fryer stacks
Simplot said the upgrades were sparked partly by complaints from neighbours
for inclusion in annual reports to the EPA as required," the application says
"These audits include reporting of any "non-trivial" environmental incidents
it was observed that the quantity of fryer particulate being exhausted into the atmosphere has increased since the installation of the line one batter upgrade resulting in some neighbour complaints
"The primary purpose of this development is to improve the exhaust discharge from not only the line-one fryer stacks but all fryer exhaust discharges from the facility."
The proposed system would take the exhaust from all fryers and direct them via on-roof ducting to the new WESP system to be built within the existing site boiler house
and the captured oil/particulates would be treated onsite
The boiler house roof will need to be raised
