Set in the bayside suburb of Warners Bay on New South Walesâ Central Coast
Newcastle Building & Constructionâs Warners Bay development features three modern townhouse designs
The townhouses sit in an area with significant bushfire risk
This meant strict non-combustibility requirements when it came to specifying materials
Newcastle Building & Construction received DA approved building plans without any specification prepared
The builder specified Nickel Flash from PGH Bricks & Paversâ Metallic range for its aesthetic appeal and because it would meet the non-combustibility requirements of the site
Bricks: Fire protection with aesthetic appeal
Newcastle Building & Constructionâs Managing Director Noel Bradley recalled the process of specifying the materials to satisfy Fire Resistance Levels (FRLs) requirements
He noted that strength and durability are the key reasons for building with brick over other materials
we had walls that required a fire rating,â Bradley explained
âAnd while PGH Bricks satisfied this requirement
it also added to the aesthetics of the masonry/lightweight combination.â
âWe primarily build two to three-storey residential dwellings and try to incorporate as much masonry as the design allows due to the strength and durability of the cavity brickwork system
Overcoming development consent requirements
Working with Newcastle Brick & Block Laying
Bradley said the quality of the trades was key to achieving the contrasting façade
âThe project had to be constructed in two stages to satisfy the development consent requirements by local council,â he explained
âLogistically this was not ideal as we had a duplex nearly finished when we were starting another build within one metre from each other
But with experienced supervisors and quality trades
we completed and handed over the project in two stages ahead of time to the clientâs delight.â
âStrength and durability are the key reasons for building with brick over other materials.â
âNewcastle Brick & Block Laying were great to deal with,â Bradley continued
âThey were motivated throughout the process
The dwellings have since been sold and are now occupied by happy purchasers who have provided extremely positive feedback
The quality of the bricklaying is second to none.â
Working with PGH for the preferred outcome
PGH Bricks & Paversâ Metallic range is a collection of clay extruded wire-cut bricks finished with a subtle metallic sheen that gives it a more opulent feel
Used in this residential design as a dominant facade surface
our Metallic range creates a diverse range of looks
When explaining the decision to specify Nickel Flash bricks
Bradley referred to PGH Bricks & Paversâ wide product range and excellent customer experience
âPGH Bricks & Pavers has the widest and most up-to-date range
We have used PGH on all of our projects in the past and find them absolutely flawless
all the way from the selection process to site delivery and quality of the brick itself.â
Newcastle Building & Constructionâs three Warners Bay townhouses were quickly sold and are now occupied by happy homeowners delighted with their new homes
PGH Bricks & Pavers partners with builders and bricklayers of all shapes and sizes, from small custom builders to volume builders, whether residential or commercial. We have one of the largest brick distribution networks in Australia.

It’s 50 years since Kate Magee became a victim of domestic violence
“My experience of DV is remarkably similar to those who experience it today,” she said
“It is just so important to keep this crime in the spotlight
Too many women and children have already died and many others are continuing to have their lives destroyed.”
Dr Magee is President of the Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle
a group whose focus includes ‘building a better world for women and girls’
Zonta has worked with Lake Macquarie City Council to install a domestic violence memorial bench on the Warners Bay foreshore
officially opened on Friday 31 May by Mayor Kay Fraser and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault and Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison
Dr Magee said the bench was intended to be a long-term
tangible reminder of domestic violence in the Lake Macquarie community
“We hope it gives courage and strength to victims
and that others who see it are reminded that gendered violence is horrendous crime within our society
and we must do everything to prevent it,” she said
Addressing domestic violence has become an increasingly urgent issue in recent months
with a disturbing uptick in the number of serious
Cr Fraser said crime statistics showed there were almost 3300 incidences of domestic assault reported across the five Lower Hunter LGAs in 2023 – equal to more than nine each day
“DV impacts the lives of so many people in our region
and this bench offers a space to stop and reflect
speak up and act to end violence,” she said
“This is an issue that is everyone’s business and we all need to play a role
It’s not just up to the victim to seek support
or the perpetrator to stop the hurt – it is up to everyone in the community to speak out
help those who turn to us and get educated about what we can do.”
Ms Harrison acknowledged the work Zonta Club had done to raise awareness of
domestic and family violence in the community
“The NSW Government is taking meaningful action to address this violence we are seeing increasingly in our communities
We have for too long focused on a crisis response and we are now committed to preventing violence before it starts,” she said
“We are working in partnership with sector and community stakeholders like Zonta to make sure our responses are tailored to each community.”
Council has also partnered with charity DV Safe Phone to provide collection boxes in three libraries – Charlestown
Swansea and Toronto – where people can drop off their old mobile phones
The phones are repaired and provided to people experiencing domestic violence, if they find themselves without one, or if theirs is being tracked. Residents can find their local provider by visiting the H.A.L.T Map Project

Fund house Cosgrove Group has acquired the centre at Warners Bay from HomeCo Daily Needs REIT in a deal brokered by Colliers.

The 12,336sq m centre is occupied by ASX-listed and/or national tenants and has a WALE of 4.6-years.
Banjo Bond [pictured top], director of Cosgrove Group, said it was âan established and well-trading centre on a large landholding fronting major road infrastructureâ.
âItâs becoming increasingly difficult to find land large enough to develop LFR centres with any scale, which we believe will make this asset more valuable in the future.â
Tenants include The Good Guys, Officeworks, Supercheap Auto and Pillow Talk.
Colliers retail middle markets head James Wilson said HomeCo Warners Bay was the second largest large format retail centre to transact nationally in 2024â MLC Asset Management paid developer Griffith Capital $57 million for the Bayview Centre on the NSW South Coast in June.

Sudoku and TriviaAll articles from the other regional websites in your areaContinueWarners Bay president Nathan Aurisch said the decision to transfer the club's NPLW licence to the Roosters came after a thorough evaluation of the resources and infrastructure required to successfully manage a premier league program in a rapidly growing women's football landscape
A decision was finalised at a club meeting on Friday night with the Roosters set to rejoin the region's top-flight women's football competition from 2025
"The club ultimately found itself unable to meet the increasing demands and criteria associated with managing a premier program
including volunteers and financial requirements
without impacting the community football program," Aurisch said
"Warners Bay FC will still fully commit to community football and will continue to provide an enjoyable environment for girls and boys to play football
"This transition presents an opportunity to further strengthen women's football in the Lake Macquarie area and build upon the foundation laid by Warners Bay FC."
Warners Bay have experienced highs and lows since joining Northern NSW Football's premier women's competition in 2015
After collecting the wooden spoon in their first season
the Cassidy Davis-led Panthers won the 2016 grand final then were a top-four side for seven straight seasons with a host of high-profile players on board
They were losing grand finalists in 2017, 2018 and 2020 before capturing the premiership-championship double in 2022.
The Panthers have been in a rebuilding phase since
finishing rooted to the bottom of the points table last year and are caught in a two-way tussle with Mid Coast for the wooden spoon this campaign
Lake Macquarie had success during a previous short stint in the premier league
securing back-to-back premierships in 2012 and 2013
Roosters president Steve Graham said the club has a strong focus on development and is excited to be entering the NPLW space
Lake Macquarie will also take on Warners Bay's Junior Development League (JDL) and Premier Youth League (PYL) programs for girls
with players and sporting director Adam Linacre
Picture by Marina Neil"We've been working hard over the last two years to build the club from the bottom up to be a successful development academy here in the northern area," Graham said
"We've always had premier pathways for boys
but I've got a daughter myself and I wanted to have a club that could provide opportunities for the girls that were exactly the same as the boys and it was something we've been talking to Northern NSW Football [NNSWF] about for some time
"Our premier arm and our junior arm merged last year to become one club and we started a women's football academy in Macquarie because one of the things we identified was there's not a lot of really sophisticated training structures out there to get girls from a community space into that premier space
"We saw it as a bit of a gap and we got 180 girls registered
Prior to that the club had 20 or 30 girls total."
Graham said Lake Macquarie planned to work with Warners Bay to transition a majority of players and coaches across to the Roosters and would also be putting out expressions of interest for 2025 next week
"We want to have a grassroots all the way to premier and beyond structure in our club and it's great that we can now do it for boys and girls."
The women's competition transitioned to NPL status in 2022 and currently has several A-League players signed at various clubs
"Lake Macquarie have been pretty proactive in this space for the last couple of years about looking to be a part of it," NNSWF general manager operations Liam Bentley said
"They've had many conversations with Warners Bay in the past as well and it's a pretty positive move in my opinion."

and people laugh at me because I have a couple of restaurants but everyone knows me for my fish and chips
"My family bought their first fish and chip shop when I was 10
and that's when I started peeling potatoes
All of my restaurants and fish and chip shops sell fresh-cut chips and scallops; they are cut and prepared in-house
"The chips are like what you had you were growing up
He's surprised at how popular the burgers have been since opening Swordfish a month ago
Choices include The Whole Lot (grass-fed beef
tomato and onions) and The Halloumi (grilled halloumi
onion and spiced tomato sauce) as well as The Prawn Roll (fresh king prawns
There are seafood packs which hero salt and pepper squid
and fish fresh from the grill including salmon
"We do a $59 and a $99 hot and cold seafood platter
sold in nice takeaway packaging so you can eat in with a beer or a wine
"We use St Malo in Sydney for our burger buns and everything else is done fresh in-house
including our sauces - even the burger sauces
"And the gluten-free range has been going off
We do gluten-free battered fish and chips and use a separate fryer and separate utensils
which is pretty rare for most fish and chip places."
"When we decided to put a gelato bar at The Kingfish I was adamant we had to make it ourselves
I didn't want to purchase gelato made by someone else," he says
and it's done the traditional Italian way where we pasteurise the milk
it makes me so happy to give a good product to our customers."

Residents would have noticed a splash of colour around Lake Macquarie at the moment
is a strong message the Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle hopes will attract plenty of attention
Members recently set up a very interesting yarn bombing display at the Rotunda
to acknowledge 16 Days of Activism from 25 November to 10 December
It also ties in with the organisationâs biggest annual advocacy campaign Zonta Says No to Violence Against Women.
Lake Macquarie City mayor Kay Fraser was on hand to officially kick-start the initiative
which included a âSpirit of the Lagoonâ dance from Belmont High School students and several guest speakers
âCouncil and Zonta worked closely for several months to achieve the striking tree wrapping,â she said
itâs all about gaining the communityâs attention to the plight of domestic violence (DV)
âIt is powerful yet sad to need to have such an event.â
Zonta vice-president Jill Maclachlan admitted the exhibit had already drawn much interest throughout the community
âMembers have been knitting and crocheting strips of yarn for some time
âThe exhibitionâs a wonderful way to expose the tragic topic of domestic violence to locals and visitors alike
âMany trees are decorated with orange flowers or hearts
âMainly because that colour symbolises a bright and optimistic future free from violence against women and girls
âThe display also creates great visibility for our club in the region as well as promoting the work of Zonta
âWe have a mask exhibit at the Belmont and Charlestown libraries
âThey represent the range of emotions women experience during DV.”
