The four-bedroom, two bathroom property at 8 Sheldon Place, West Hobart, is unlike many homes on the market today.
Described as “unashamedly vibrant and vintage”, the decor of the split-level home is delightfully stuck in the 1970s.
From the psychedelic carpet in the living room and bedrooms, the busy wallpaper throughout, the curved staircase and the velvet curtains, it’s a welcome trip back in time.
“A spacious open plan living area occupies the top level, which is a glorious kaleidoscope of colour that Austin Powers himself would be proud of,” the listing reads.
“Natural light pours into the lounge and dining space through sliding doors opening onto the balcony – a perfect place to take in the magnificent outlook over Mt Direction, the Bowen and Tasman bridges, casino, Bruny Island, and far beyond.
On the home’s top level are two “grandly decorated” bedrooms, including the master which has a built-in wardrobe and an ensuite.

A family bathroom with a vanity, separate bath and shower, as well as a laundry area with a toilet are also on the top floor.
The curved staircase leads down to the lower level where the remaining two bedrooms are.
A second toilet and an unfinished space for a bathroom are also on the lower level.
The deceased estate is listed for more than $895,000 with selling agent Mel Shutt of Ripple Realty Hobart.
“It was pretty bold even in its day,” Shutt told Domain.
“It reflects an incredibly creative and vibrant personality.”
She said the home has had significant interest and is currently under offer.
The home’s unique features and its incredible views have both won over prospective buyers.
“It has 180-degree views and it’s quite a unique proposition in that the downstairs part of the house was never finished,” she said.
“Some people have loved the uniqueness of the 1970s decor… It’s the first time it’s ever been sold.”
She said the craftsmanship of the bespoke cabinetry in the kitchen and the handmade pavers were unique features to the home that many intended to keep.
The original plans of the home also showed that there was a proposed pool in the yard which was never built.

Smoke from multiple bushfires on Tasmania’s West Coast has spread across the state
While southern Tasmanian communities face no immediate threat
authorities have issued a number of smoke alerts and recommended preventive measures
The fires are currently burning near the main West Coast population centres of Queenstown
Director of Public Health Dr Mark Veitch has reminded Tasmanians everywhere to remain aware of smoke from the bushfires
“Keeping safe from fire danger is always the highest priority
so make sure to follow emergency advice,” he said when the fires began
“If you’re likely to be in smoky conditions for more than a day or two
consider if you can safely temporarily relocate to a place unaffected by smoke.”
“This is particularly important for those at higher risk from smoke.”
High-risk individuals include older people
pregnant and breastfeeding women and those with underlying medical conditions
Health authorities recommend several key protective measures
with the primary advice being to stay indoors with doors and windows closed
They also advise setting air conditioners to recirculate indoor air to minimise smoke exposure

A significant thunderstorm has rolled across the north-west of Tasmania this morning
leaving about 30,000 customers without power
the largest outages are impacting 2,333 homes and businesses in the Wynyard area and 1,591 in Penguin
Northern local Brendan Costello took to social media to share images of large hailstones “the size of golf balls” that fell on his property around 11:30am
“Pretty sure the weather man missed this one,” he said
The storm marks the beginning of what meteorologists predict will be an unsettled weather pattern across the island throughout the day
The Bureau of Meteorology says northeast to northerly winds are expected to shift westerly by tonight as a cold front moves over Tasmania
Impressive wind gusts have already been recorded across the north-west
with Cape Grim experiencing 82km/h and Luncheon Hill reaching 76km/h
Smithton and Wynyard have also seen substantial gusts measuring 61km/h and 46km/h respectively
The Bureau of Meteorology is also forecasting thunderstorms to hit Hobart and Launceston later today
ahead of another high-pressure system on Thursday evening
A more significant cold front will then cross the state on Sunday

Thick smoke from bushfires burning in Tasmania’s west has blanketed much of southern parts of the state
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Alex Melitsis said the smoke haze is likely a “bit of a mix” from fires in the state’s northwest and from fires in Victoria’s Grampians region
“We are expecting the smoke haze to clear out of the Hobart area a bit later on this afternoon as we get more of a cleaner kind of south-westerly wind change moving over the area,” Melitsis told Pulse
He said there will likely be similar smoke haze over parts of the north
“So that’ll flush a lot of the smoke out and it might actually start to get a bit smokier around parts of northern and the north-west of Tasmania later on.”
“Depending on what the fires do in the north-west
which it’s hard to say right now because they’re under cloud
there may even be some heavier patches of smoke about parts of the north-west this afternoon,” he said
we’ve seen a bit of a south-westerly wind change move over the firegrounds this morning and we’re expecting those winds to remain sort of generally southerly later on today and for the rest of tomorrow,” he said
“So [expect] sort of moderate southerly winds later on today but winds easing overnight tonight and into tomorrow.”

Cruising Yacht Club of Australia vice Commodore David Jacobs said later on Friday that Mr Smith had been hit by a mainsheet
“We thought he had been hit by the boom but we have now learned that wasn’t the case,’’ Mr Jacobs told the Daily Telegraph
“He was hit by the mainsheet and it threw him across the boat and unfortunately he hit his head on the winch and that’s what killed him.’’
Superintendent McNulty praised crews for their “substantial job” in delivering CPR

Mr Jacobs also commented on the rescue of the Poco Russo crew member who was “swept overboard”
“That is one of the most terrifying experiences that you can have,” Mr Jacobs said
Mr Jacobs said the sailor was washed “about 1.2 kilometres away from their boat”
and were retrieved by the Poco Russo crew “healthy and well”
Mr Jacobs shirked one reporter’s assertions the race was forecast to see “boat-breaking weather”
and said the Bureau of Meteorology provided briefings before the race and at launch day on conditions that were not “extreme”
“The forecast (from the Bureau) was strong winds to gale-force winds
These fleets can handle those winds easily,” he said
they are used to the winds and they are not extreme questions.”
The Bureau of Meteorology had a strong wind warning in place overnight
with wind speeds expected around 25–30 knots between Sydney and Ulladulla and waves about 2–3 metres high in some areas

The City of Hobart has launched its next local area mobility plan
covering the hilly West Hobart and Mt Stuart suburbs
The city is calling for suggestions to make walking and bike riding connections clearer and easier in the area
Suggestions to improve bike riding could include: shared paths
cycleways and quiet street bike connections
West Hobart has painted bike lanes on sections of Hill Street but no other road treatments to make it more comfortable for people riding bikes
E-bikes have made suburbs such as West Hobart and Mt Stuart
previously off cycling maps because of their steepness
more accessible because of their proximity to the city
some riders use the route of the old trolley bus into West Hobart as the gradients tend to be kinder
These streets might be a good place to map a cycling network through the area and could include Goulburn
Mt Stuart is steeper again but with an e-bike certain routes are more achievable than others
The difficulty here is that there are fewer wider roads to accommodate dedicated bike facilities
A route including traffic-calmed streets with deterrents for rat-running car drivers and 30km/h speed limits might be an option in place of separated cycleways
Hobart Council approved the Lenah Valley mobility plan late last year
This included a separated cycleway on Augusta Road as a priority project
which would be useful for people living on the northern side of Mt Stuart
The council’s North Hobart Neighbourhood plan is yet to be released
but last year’s discussion paper suggested a link from Federal Street into Elphinstone Road
The plan is open for feedback and comment until 31 May, via an online map.
Workshops are being held on Tuesday 7 and Tuesday 14 May from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Mount Stuart Memorial Hall at 14 Byard Street, with RSVPs essential
There will also be an information session at The Train Park on the corner of Hill and Warwick streets on Saturday18 May between 10am and 11.30am

THE chance to become the next custodian of a nationally significant historic property such as Stanwell Hall – the former Hobart home of landscape painter John Glover – comes along only rarely
And with the owners Douglas and Jenny Armati “looking for a new canvas”
the time is right for a new family to write the next chapter for this grand 1826-built home
Peterswald for property director Kim Morgan said there was a whimsical “sense of romantic fantasy” about the multi-level
there is something delightful to be revealed around every corner of this supremely private property
It begins at the original front entrance where sections of a very large tree now serve as gate sentinels
then-governor Kate Warner and the homeowners planted a tree in its place
which was commemorated with a plaque that can be found in the glorious
The next feature that catches the eye is the stone from which the original home was built
far lighter than what is found in the historic sandstone buildings that pepper the Hobart CBD
Perhaps a walk around the veranda that swoops and encircles much of the home; then onto an Edwardian room with a beautiful box bay window; travel upwards to find the master bedroom with its opulent space
dressing room and a balcony with mountain views in one direction and a river vista in the other
“Stanwell Hall is a large and luxurious home of national significance
but it is also a beautiful ‘homely’ property,” Mr Morgan said
With the riot of colour in the gardens as the backdrop to a meal with friends
this gorgeous room will bring a tear to the eye.”
Stanwell Hall retains a unique artistic pedigree
The property was the first house celebrated colonial painter Glover lived in when he moved to Van Diemen’s Land at the age of 64
It was in the grounds that Glover painted his famous landscape Hobart Town
which is held at the State Library of New South Wales and shows a detailed overview of Hobart as it was in 1832
Stanwell Hall was called home by another famous landscape painter
it is home to a contemporary artist in residence
Glover painted one of his famous landscapes – Hobart Town
taken from the garden where I lived – from the property’s garden
Privately positioned in a picture perfect estate-like setting behind high hedges and established trees, Stanwell Hall feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of Hobart
Once through the electric gate — where there is off-street parking for three vehicles — an Edna Walling-inspired garden is revealed with mixed borders and a symphony of flowers and foliage
a meat locker has been transformed into a cellar
The home’s Georgian features hint at its era including an original front door
timber floors and a dramatic timber staircase
It was enhanced by Edwardian alterations in 1917
decorative leadlight windows and a wrought iron widow’s walk from which one can enjoy a 360-degree view of Hobart
More recent renovations and restorations have ensured Stanwell Hall is fully equipped for a comfortable and functional lifestyle
Mr Morgan described the owner’s restoration work as impeccably detailed
light spills through windows bathing the interiors in warm sunlight
Hydronic central heating makes sure that it is warm in winter
French doors open into the garden or onto the veranda making the spaces practical extensions of the house
“The interiors of the home communicate with the gardens beautifully,” Mr Morgan said
The expansive ground floor artist’s studio is accessed by a hallway behind the superb kitchen and could potentially be reconfigured as a separate apartment
The bespoke kitchen has classic shaker-style cabinetry
a stainless steel Smeg cooker with four gas burners
Bosch dishwasher and a spacious butler’s pantry
Two chic bathrooms are located on the ground floor
A spacious ensuite opens off the master bedroom on the first floor and is complete with a shower
West Hobart’s No.166 Melville Street is listed with Peterswald for property
it will be sold by expressions of interest closing at 5pm on December 21

ONE of Hobart’s oldest fruit trees looks to be the pear-fect addition to the council’s significant tree register
The towering Napoleon Pear tree in West Hobart is more than 120-years-old and still produces 1.5 tonne of fruit each year
Owner Danielle Gray nominated it for Hobart City Council’s significant tree register to protect it from being cut down by future owners of the Warwick St property
Danielle Gray of West Hobart in her backyard with a pear tree that is around 120 years old and has been placed on the significant tree register with the Hobart City Council
Ms Gray said it was a really beautiful tree and one of the last remaining from the orchard that used to cover West Hobart
“We’ve eaten and cooked with the pears but most of the produce we give to home cider makers,” she said
“It’s probably got another 200-300 years left and still quite a long time to go producing fruit
Ms Gray — a keen gardener — said the massive 900 sqm backyard and the old pear tree was one of the main reasons she purchased the house
The tree was nominated to join the register in three categories — aesthetic significance
outstanding dimensions and old or vulnerable specimen
Council has initiated the induction of almost 750 trees and three hedges — the first since 2010 — to the register
The majority of the 741 specimens to be listed are the 534 located in Soldiers Memorial Ave at Queens Domain
Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said she was really excited about the new listings as the register “was looking a little bit sad” before now
The notorious Hill Street house that Rory Jack Thompson killed his wife in before flushing her body parts down the toilet has sold for well-in-excess of half a million dollars within only three days of being listed on the market
THE most notorious murder house in modern Hobart history has been snapped up for a figure that “well exceeded” the asking price of $575,000 — three days after it was listed for sale
CSIRO oceanographer and self-described “mad scientist” Rory Jack Thompson strangled and dismembered his wife Maureen with a hacksaw and a meat cleaver
flushing dozens of her body parts down the toilet of her West Hobart rental
A finger was found a few days later in Hobart’s sewer system
leading police to pull apart the plumbing at 99 Hill St and finding 83 body parts jammed in its pipes
Charlotte Peterswald real estate agent Debbie Heron — who has sold the house twice before including to former Premier David Bartlett — welcomed 37 groups of interested buyers to an open home
Buyers were lined up down the street to view the renovated and replumbed two-bedroom 1910 townhouse
who received “seven competitive offers” over the weekend
said there was a clause in the contract to disclose the house’s gruesome history to prospective buyers
“Most of them just responded by saying ‘yes we know’
it will come up with some of the history,” she said
“People just seem to not have any concerns about it.”
Ms Heron said the house “has its own identity now” and the current owner “absolutely loves it” but had to return to NSW
emigrated to Australia in the 1970s with her “genius” Seattle-born husband
They later moved to Hobart after the oceanographer nabbed a senior appointment with Australia’s science agency
The couple had two children — Rafi and Melody
Maureen took her children to a Catholic crisis centre
accusing Rory of violence and seeking help from the courts
Defended in court by barrister Pierre Slicer
Thompson was found not guilty of murder by reasons of insanity in 1984 and was incarcerated in hospital at Risdon Prison
escaped Risdon in 1999 and made it on board a Melbourne-bound Ansett flight before he was hauled back to jail
leaving between $300,000 and $1.5 million to the World Wildlife Fund but not a cent to his children
this historic home tricks the eye at first glance
But head inside and you will find so much to discover
such as the two-storey layout and the cascading tiered gardens that stretch out across the 1400sq m block
the home is a showcase of beautifully maintained and preserved period features
But this is no stuffy museum; it’s actually a fabulous family home with a warmly welcoming feel
you’d never guess that all of this was in the back yard
Peterswald for property’s Ed McKay described it as a home with an “understated elegance”
He said while it exhibits all of the hallmarks of its late 1800s era
“It is the type of property that would be comfortable as a three-bedroom home with a study and multiple living spaces
or it could be configured with up to four or five bedrooms
the owners have created a delightful dining room
but it is easy to imagine it being used as a large bedroom.”
There is a lot to discover throughout the property
from the widow’s walk at the peak of the home — and its expansive views across the city — to the huge
likely century old trees that are peppered throughout the back garden

THE chance to visit Larundel would be a thrill for any lover of local history and architecture
Anyone who has passed by this gorgeous 1880s West Hobart home might have marvelled at its commanding street presence and stunning period features
But what is it like inside
Owners Greg Wain and Scott Rankin are no strangers to the restoration and renovation of historic homes
They’ve worked their magic on a bunch of properties in Queensland and Tasmania
notably the impeccable Prospect House at Richmond
the couple drew on their experience to breathe new life into this old gem
And they ‘just knew’ what it needed at their first inspection of the four-bedroom period home
Mr Rankin said they had brought the historic house into the 21st Century
“Some people might not be able to see past how much work a home needs,” he said
We will talk with our builder about what can be achieved
if we need to move a wall to open up the floorplan
“At least half of the key to a successful renovation project is great communication with your builder.”
Mr Wain said with any renovation there will be challenges along the way
was the stucco that was all the way down the central hallway and into the dining room
“We ground all of that off and then had a plasterer come in to update those spaces,” he said
“We also moved sandstone blocks from one part of the property to another
including moving the kitchen and some bedrooms to make better use of the space
the first thing we did was strip off the wallpaper in the front sitting room.”
West Hobart — described by its listing agents as an elegantly proportioned gentleman’s residence — was originally built as the ‘town residence’ for a wealthy businessman from Franklin in the Huon Valley
Built of brick with sandstone cornerstones and sills
and gracious steps leading up to the front door
it is a property with a sense of stately grandeur
There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms
while beautiful original features hint at its Victorian era: elaborate cornices
While a homeowner could enter the house conveniently through the double garage
the main entrance at the opposite side of the property is nothing short of magical
through gorgeous gardens toward stone steps
the veranda and to an entrance featuring intricately designed leadlight stained glass in traditional Victorian patterns
complemented by geometrically patterned Victorian Italianate floor tiles in the entrance hall
the owners mentioned these glass and tile features were original to the house
alongside the stunning light fittings with a pulley system
An arch divides the original front of the house from the living area to the rear
with the primary bedroom offering grand space
Two bedrooms with built-ins and a bathroom are positioned along the hall
all designed with the same taste and quality as the primary bedroom suite
To the left is the generously sized dining room with a servery to the state-of-the-art kitchen
a huge island bench and it opens to a sunny family living area with sliding doors to a delightful courtyard
the owners say the location will be among the things they miss most about living at Larundel
the butcher and grocer are very close — it’s convenient,” Mr Rankin said
Mr Wain said the home would be ideal for a family with teenage children
“We have often had 12 people for dinner; a casual meal that spills into the courtyard or something more formal in the dining room,” he said

Hobart might not be the first place you think of when considering the grandest homes old-world homes in the country
but ‘Minallo’ might just change your opinion
‘Minallo’ underwent a significant restoration in 2017 and now stands tall
returned to its former glory as one of the finest homes in the Tasmanian capital
The remarkable property enjoys a sizeable 1,726m² block
with picturesque views out over Hobart CBD and the River Derwent
As you’d expect from a home of such stature
the gardens are meticulously maintained and the residence is appropriately secluded
tucked away out of sight down the gravel drive and invisible from the street
Beyond the sheer scale of the four bedroom
the period correct details of the architectural design have been maintained and celebrated by the designers most recently commissioned to restore the property
It’s safe to say the team at JAWS Architects have done a stellar job at 22A Pine Street
bringing details to life such as the original tessellated tile flooring

the next space you find yourself in is the palatial open-plan living and dining rooms
with the kitchen (complete with a charming island bench) and pantry flanking the room
The ground floor also boasts the previously mentioned back deck and joined patio
as well as a sun room that would serve as the perfect spot to enjoy a good book and a stiff drink
It’s upstairs where you’ll find the rest of the light-filled bedrooms
as well as an additional room that is currently set up as a comfortably proportioned home office
You won’t find the voguish walk-in-robes or his-and-hers ensuite bathrooms
with the architects maintaining much of the original floor plan

WHEN this West Hobart fixer-upper hit the market
it immediately caused a stir with buyers who love to renovate
In the week that it launched No.17 William Street zoomed to the top of the realestate.com.au charts as the most viewed home in Tasmania
Then over the past three weeks it has piled up near 16,000 views on the property site — and counting
That’s a figure heading toward Tassie’s Top 10 most viewed of the year
Property representative Brad Stephens from Devine Property said he had shown over 100 groups through the property and received over 50 email inquiries
one of the most popular he has taken to market
“It is such a unique little property … but the response
“I’ve not sold a home in need of this much work before
“And the consensus among my colleagues is that it’s among the worst they’ve seen
the majority of interest we’ve had is from people who want to restore what is there
They want to rebuild it from the inside out and restore it to its former glory
“Being a bit rough around the edges is actually attractive to buyers rather than off-putting
“Then there are others that might prefer to knock it down and start from scratch.”
Mr Stephens said a rundown house that people can put their stamp on in this suburb was always going to be a hit with buyers
He described the small cottage as having “an amazingly quaint nature”
“The location means an owner can easily walk to everything the city offers
It is just steps from the golden triangle of Forest Road and Goulburn Street,” he said
That is one of the things people have been remarking about at inspections — not in a good or bad way
it’s just something that grabs attention.”
The 77sq m weatherboard cottage offers a two-bedroom single-bathroom floorplan
There is a combined living and dining space
The home was owned by a well-liked older man who passed a few months ago
Mr Stephens said while the property was not listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register
he recommends prospective purchasers make their own inquiries prior to bidding at auction
West Hobart is heading to auction on Saturday August 29 at noon
It will be open to inspect tomorrow from 12.30pm-1pm and on auction day from 11.30am-12pm

In the lead up to Hobart's Mosque open day this Saturday roving reporter Andy Gall is having breakfast at the home of Imam Sabri Samson. The Imam explains they keep the call to prayer in the building as they didn't want to upset neighbours. But Andy reasons if we hear church bells, why not the call to prayer?
Muslim community leader Imam Sabri Samson says opening the Mosque on Saturday will help encourage understanding and allow the public to ask questions about the Muslim faith.(ABC News: Sam Ikin)

Home buyers are taking their time in Lewisham
A WATERSIDE suburb east of the city has been revealed as the slowest property market in greater Hobart
Lewisham houses took the longest time to sell out of the 59 suburbs analysed in October PropTrack figures
House sales in the beach suburb were eight days slower in October than they were six months ago
when home loan interest rates started increasing for the first time in many years
The time on market figures — which show the median number of days it takes to sell a property by private treaty in a suburb — were higher in October than they were in April in about 96 per cent of greater Hobart suburbs
The exceptions to the rule were Hobart suburb and city fringe Glebe where homes sold slightly faster in the October data
Figures show there were one dozen Hobart suburbs where houses took 15-20 days longer to sell
which both had a 20-day downshift between April and October
Cambridge and Clarendon Vale were knocking on that door with a 19 and 18-day slowdown
PropTrack’s data showed 21 suburbs with a 10-14 change in pace; 14 more areas in the 5-9 day range; and 10 suburbs that had hardly changed at all with only a 1-4 day shift in their time it takes to sell
Warrane and Sandford recorded the smallest change of 1 day difference between October and April
West Hobart was October’s fastest mover at just 10 days on the market
that pace in April would have ranked it only the 17th fastest market with scores of areas setting an 8 or 9 day pace at the time
No.328 Liverpool St is one of the finest homes in fast-selling suburb
Listed with Peterswald for property at $2.2m-plus
PropTrack data shows overall in greater Hobart
Real Estate Institute of Tasmania president Michael Walsh said from what he has seen — and he expects most agents would agree — properties are taking longer to sell now because there are fewer people “through the door”
but I believe fewer people competing to secure homes is becoming our ‘normal’ market now,” he said
“It means we have to carefully consider what a property will be worth and who it is going to appeal to
“Buyers now have the opportunity to stand back
that is what a normal market should look like.”
[19 December 2022] Leading micromobility company Beam has revealed that at least 95,000 kilograms of carbon emissions has been saved by Hobart Beam riders
with over 540,000 kilometres ridden on a Beam in the past year
Hobart riders surveyed revealed they would have used a car for just over half of their trips if e-scooters weren’t available
showing the impact of e-scooters in Hobart has had on travel patterns
the most popular commuter routes are from Regatta Grounds (with eastern shore commuters parking and riding into the CBD)
Popular visitor routes see tourists exploring the waterfront and Battery Point
Hobart riders are leaving their cars behind
The benefits of shared e-scooters in the city can be seen in the results of Beam’s rider survey in Hobart
which reveal that of Beam’s regular Hobart riders (defined as taking a minimum of 1 trip per week)
71% revealed they have used their cars less as a result of access to shared e-scooters
and 21% are more likely or definitely going to sell their car because of their e-scooter options
Of regular Beam riders who currently don’t own a car
24% reveal that they recently sold their car as a direct result of having access to e-scooters
much less likely or definitely not going to buy one in the next 5 years
work (46%) and leisure (25%) make up the large portion of use cases
highlighting the potential of shared micromobility to play a part in modal shift
as over 50% of trips on a Beam e-scooter in Hobart are for work and study commuting purposes
75% of regular riders also revealed their use of Beam e-scooters for work and/or study commuting purposes
This shows that riders are using Beams for more than one travel category
with shared micromobility able to connect Hobartians to both work and play
Beam’s Tasmania Operations Manager Glenn Alddis
Beam will soon expand its Tasmanian footprint
with operations commencing in Devonport in early 2023
We’re on a mission to turn little drives into better rides
it would be a tough challenge to find another home that looks like this one in West Hobart
The house’s open-plan design provides light-filled and spacious living and kitchen areas
This solidly constructed property in a booming suburb could be an ideal opportunity for an astute renovator or developer
It is positioned on a good-sized allotment with lovely views from an enormous sundeck
The location is close to local schools and only a five-minute drive to Hobart’s CBD
and the owners would be happy to negotiate a sale for both properties
