Whyalla Police arrested a 34-year-old Whyalla Playford man and charged him with theft by receiving
He was bailed to appear in the Whyalla Magistrates Court on 27 May

That might have used to have been the case
but new data shows there is just one suburb in all of metropolitan Adelaide where you are better off buying than being a tenant
Compare the Market data shows Adelaide city units or apartments are the only properties out of the 227 the comparison company has data for where you’re better off buying than renting
whereas monthly repayments on a median-priced $526,058 unit are $2520 – some $229 less

Regional buyers hoping to save by buying have more choice
with properties in 11 out of the 32 towns the company has data for cheaper to own than rent
The biggest saving here can be found in Port Pirie West
where househunters can save $582 per month by forgoing $1602 a month in rent in favour of $1020 in mortgage repayments
While it used to be cheaper to buy than rent
Here a month’s rent will set you back $3637 – some $6615 less than the $10,252 you would be paying on a median priced property of more than $2.139m
Compare the Market property expert Andrew Winter said while it was cheaper to rent than buy in most instances
there could still be a benefit to doing it
“If owning a home is part of your long-term plan
you might find it’s worth paying a bit more to have a little slice of Australia to call your own,” he said
“If you don’t currently need a lot of space
a unit somewhere central and convenient may be a great stepping stone to kick start your property journey
if you’re able to hold onto that property for at least a few years
you’ll generally bank some equity when values go up
“While you may be able to borrow a bit more it’s important to speak to an expert and stress test your mortgage to make sure you can afford your repayments comfortably
is crucial to avoid paying more interest than you need to.”

New data has revealed SA’s inflation-defying properties – with homes in three suburbs or towns now having a lower median price than they did a decade ago
buyers can now pick up a house in both Roxby Downs and Coober Pedy
for less than they would have needed to pay this time in 2015
Roxby Downs houses currently have a median sale price of $275,000 – from 59 sales over the past 12 months – however
10 years ago you this was sitting $115,000 higher at $390,000
The median Hackham unit price is currently $195,500 – some $38,250 less than buyers needed in 2015 when their median was $233,750
a median-priced Coober Pedy house can now be bought for $9,000 less than the $89,000 you needed a decade ago
who has sold 12 properties in Hackham in the past 12 months
said the perceived value loss is easily explainable
compared to Morphett Vale which is just next door
so if one or two do sell in there that are high priced and then 10 sell in there that are cheap
that’s going to affect the median,” he said
“The ones that are decent are selling for $500,000 to $550,000 mark
however what you’re seeing there is the Eureka Care village
which is a lifestyle retirement village and those homes are classed as units – they’re selling for around the $180,000 mark and that’s where that lower median is coming from.”
Of suburbs to have recorded at least 10 sales in both the past 12 months and the comparable 12-month period in 2015
while there were just three suburbs or towns where values have dropped over the past decade
there are some where values haven’t shifted greatly
14 locations have recorded a median increase less than $100,000 over the past decade
with another two having recorded a change of exactly $100,000
Three of these have recorded median shifts of less than $50,000
and all are in SA’s Iron Triangle – Whyalla North
where the median house price is up just $28,000
Port Augusta West where the median price is up just $39,000 and Whyalla Stuart
Raine and Horne Roxby Downs Property principal Craig Sumsion said the mining town offered affordable buying compared to metropolitan prices
“I can’t understand why people are not coming here in droves,” he said
and if anyone’s interesting in working in the region or in the mining industry
the largest median shift over the past decade can be seen in Unley Park
where house values have surged from $1.06m to $3.325m – a whopping $2.265m difference
Image: Macaroni when seized – 4 Jan 2023 – and right
recovered at RSPCA Lonsdale shelter – now rehomed
A Whyalla couple who allowed their young dog and her seven puppies to starve were convicted in the Whyalla Magistrates Court yesterday after pleading guilty to three counts of animal ill-treatment
In sentencing the man and woman (both aged 30) to a two-month jail term
suspended on an 18-month good behaviour bond
Magistrate Luke Davis expressed disgust as he viewed photos showing the condition of the animals when seized by an RSPCA South Australia Inspector
If members of the community could see those photos they would be very upset as we all were having to see them,” His Honour said
“It was appalling the state those dogs were found in.”
an RSPCA SA Inspector attended at the couple’s Whyalla Stuart property on 3 January 2023
The female defendant advised the Inspector that her three-year-old dog
was skinny due to having recently suffered the parvo virus as well as giving birth to seven puppies
the Inspector found all the animals suffering ringworm and in extremely emaciated condition with two-year-old Macaroni having a body condition score of 1/9 and her puppies 2/9
A male adult dog in good body condition was also sighted
After the defendant had agreed to surrender the mother and puppies
the Inspector provided her with dog food and feeding instructions and arranged to collect the animals the next day
On returning the next day accompanied by an RSPCA SA Officer and a volunteer
as per permission previously granted by the female defendant
where they found one of the puppies lying down and barely breathing
The puppy was immediately transferred to RSPCA’s Whyalla shelter and humanely euthanased
Macaroni and her six remaining puppies were transferred directly to RSPCA’s Lonsdale shelter
where all underwent vet checks and were placed on medication and strict feeding plans
Within 36 days Macaroni’s weight had almost doubled from 13kg to 25.6kg
All the animals made full recoveries and most have now been rehomed
Magistrate Davis agreed with RSPCA SA’s legal counsel that it was a serious case that warranted a penalty of imprisonment
the defendants are forbidden from owning any animals other than the male adult dog named Bucky as he was not in poor body condition and not taken into RSPCA SA care
The defendants have been allowed to keep Bucky on condition that they get the dog registered
desexed and provided with a basic kennel within 60 days
They were also ordered to provide access to Bucky
who will be subject to supervision by an RSPCA Inspector over the next twelve months
Due to the defendants’ financial circumstances
RSPCA SA did not seek costs other than $375 court fees for each defendant
the maximum penalty for animal cruelty is $20,000 or two years’ imprisonment
the maximum penalty is $50,000 or four years’ imprisonment

A 34-year-old Seacliff man is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on allegations that he failed to provide adequate food
water and living conditions for his bearded dragon lizard
The lizard was heavily emaciated when seized from a property in Elizabeth South but recovered after being in RSPCA care and has been rehomed
A 31-year-old man is due to appear in the Whyalla Magistrates Court on allegations that he neglected to provide adequate and appropriate food
water and living conditions to two dogs and six puppies
The mother dog was emaciated when seized from the defendant’s property in Whyalla Stuart
The defendant failed to appear at a previous hearing on Wednesday 19 March
at which time the animals were forfeited to RSPCA SA enabling the process of desexing and rehoming them to begin
A 39-year-old woman is due before the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court charged with six counts of ill treatment of an animal in relation to six dogs allegedly found on her property in emaciated conditions
At a previous hearing the court granted the RSPCA’s application that the dogs be forfeited to the Minister
A 25-year-old woman is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of a dog
who was found in a severely emaciated state at an Elizabeth Grove property in April 2024

and he made a full recovery in care before being rehomed
A northern suburbs woman is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of two dogs
who were found in a severely emaciated state at an Elizabeth South property in June 2024
A snake was also located at the property but has not been the subject of any charges

The defendant agreed to surrender the dogs to RSPCA SA
A 52-year-old Athol Park woman is due to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on allegations of dumping seven puppies on the Port River last year
Members of the public found the dogs shortly afterwards
which prompted an investigation by SAPOL leading to the woman’s arrest
A 69-year-old woman is due to appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court to face 23 counts of ill-treatment of an animal under SA’s Animal Welfare Act
Twenty-one counts relate to cats and kittens
the RSPCA SA will allege these animals were kept in “Filthy” conditions
which is the worst rating on the organisation’s Environmental Health Scale (adapted from Tufts Animal and Condition scales)
it will be alleged that the woman failed to seek veterinary treatment to mitigate harm suffered by some of the animals
that she allegedly failed to provide adequate food for some of the animals
who were in emaciated condition when seized by RSPCA SA inspectors on 21 February 2024
The two remaining counts for ill treatment of an animal concern two River Murray Short-Necked turtles
Caring for these animals in captivity is complex
with their requirements including heating and artificial UV light
RSPCA SA will allege that the woman failed to provide adequate and appropriate living conditions for the reptiles by failing to provide clean water and docking areas
thereby causing the animals to be permanently in water
which is contrary to their natural way of life
Having failed to provide the proper daily care for the turtles
the RSPCA SA will allege the woman then failed to seek veterinary treatment for them when they developed diseases
One had black ulcerated lesions and a soft shell due to lack of exposure to ultraviolent light and the other also had multiple lesions on its shell and a bone infection
All the animals have been forfeited to RSPCA SA
enabling them all to be rehomed except for one kitten that was humanely euthanased due to significant medical issues
A 40-year-old dog breeder from Aldinga Beach is due to appear before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on five counts of animal ill-treatment
The RSPCA seized three bulldogs and two French bulldogs from the woman due to them being emaciated
Sentencing submissions are to be conducted at the next hearing with a possible judgment to be handed down in a long-running trial in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court involving a female defendant charged with ill treatment of a horse
At a hearing in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday 14 March 2025
the defendant was found guilty of failing to get veterinary treatment for her Standardbred horse when he was suffering a chronic and painful infection in his hooves
The horse was assessed by an attending equine vet and euthanased on humane grounds
A 34-year-old northern-suburbs woman will face Court on six charges of animal ill-treatment pertaining to animals in her care that were heavily emaciated in early January 2024
One dog that was seized was so emaciated that it died whilst the RSPCA was transporting it to a veterinarian for urgent medical attention
and a number of deceased animals were located inside
A 48-year-old woman is due to face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with failure to comply with a court order restricting the number of animals she is allowed to have in her care or custody
RSPCA SA inspectors attended at the woman’s Lewiston property on 17 October 2023 and seized 86 dogs and puppies
the woman was convicted on animal ill-treatment charges in relation to a Parrakie dog breeding facility that had more than 300 dogs and puppies
Members of the public who witness animal cruelty or neglect are urged to immediately call RSPCA’s cruelty report hotline on 1300 477 722
Leabrook has an asking rent of $710 per week
The suburb topped the list for most in-demand suburbs for rentals
South Australia’s rental crisis shows no signs of abating in 2023 with a backlog of still-to-be-built homes further restricting supply
Real estate experts say rising interest rates are also adding more pressure
and frustration is growing among renters across the state

Custom-built Normanville home is an entertainer’s delight
PropTrack and realestate.com.au’s Best of the Best report shows not only has rent reached record levels in SA
but the demand for rental properties has far exceeded supply
And data for the most in-demand suburbs reveals renters are looking for a home anywhere across metropolitan Adelaide
Leabrook in Adelaide’s east has taken out the top spot as the most sought-after suburb for houses among prospective tenants
It has recorded an annual growth of more than 154 per cent in engagers per listing
Senior PropTrack economist Paul Ryan said the rental market was “tightest in regional SA” with a vacancy rate of 0.8 per cent
Sophie Campbell of Harris Real Estate who recently listed a Leabrook home for rent said the rental market was very strong in the suburb
“I recently had 17 groups through on the first open
there’s been a huge surge in demand,” Ms Campbell said
The suburb is closely followed by Osborne in the city’s northwest which has seen engagement per listing grow by 88.20 per cent over the past 12 months
Devon Park and Port Adelaide are next on the list
recording more than 66 per cent annual growth each
Hyde Park has been top choice among renters
recording an increase of 147.79 per cent in engagers per listing
Osborne has an asking rent of $500 to $600 per week
PropTrack senior economist Paul Ryan said it was not surprising to see demand for rentals right across metropolitan Adelaide
“With so few rentals available and Adelaide’s vacancy rate sitting at 0.9 per cent
it’s not surprising to see renters chasing whatever is available,” Mr Ryan said
“Rental conditions are so tight in Adelaide that people can’t be too picky about where they want to rent
which is really a frustrating situation for renters at the moment.”
Jamestown recorded the highest growth for houses listed
up by 97.20 per cent while unit listings in Renmark saw a whopping increase of 167.32 per cent
Ridleyton has an asking rent of $500 to $520 per week
The suburb bagged the third spot in the top 10 list of most in-demand suburbs for rentals
Mr Ryan said the market was “tightest in regional SA” with a vacancy rate of 0.8 per cent
the lowest in the country along with Perth and Hobart
“There’s a huge backlog of houses still being built
which means a further tightening of rental supply and increases in rental costs seems likely over the coming year,” he said
The limited supply of stock coupled with strong demand is leading to heightened increases in rental prices
Turner Real Estate CEO Emma Slape said while 2022 has been a year of continuing strong demand and rent rises right across metropolitan Adelaide
it will take a while for the pressures to ease
Turner Real Estate CEO Emma Slape said supply of rental homes with three to four bedrooms was low
“There hasn’t been any easing in tenant demands
We are still seeing very strong reactions to family homes because we have seen the availability of large
three to four bedroom homes decrease as homebuyers have bought into the market,” Ms Slape said
“The solution to the current tight rental market is either more rental supply or less rental demand
When first home buyers move out of rental stock and into their homes
“We need more investors in the market and hopefully as people move around Australia
that will change supply and demand as well.”
Port Adelaide has been listed on the market with an asking rent of $580 per week
Medindie was the most expensive suburb to rent in 2022 with a median weekly rent of $990
It was followed by Malvern and Glenunga where homes had a median weekly rent of $863 and $850 respectively
Eastwood was the costliest with a median weekly rent of $495
Tenants in regional SA were equally hit by rising rents – Port Elliot was the most expensive to rent with a median weekly rent for a house sitting at $495
Units in Victor Harbor were also the most expensive to rent with a weekly median rent of $535
The data also revealed the suburbs that have recorded the highest growth in rent
Burton in Adelaide’s north was the most lucrative for landlords
Median house rents also increased by more than 23 per cent in Beulah Park and Woodville South

A police officer examines the vehicle driven by the surviving driver that was involved in a head-on crash that killed two people near Whyalla.
Link copiedShareShare articleSouth Australian police say they expect to lay charges against a driver involved in a head-on crash that claimed two lives about 30 kilometres south of Whyalla.
Police believe the man's four-wheel drive moved onto the wrong side of the Lincoln Highway about 12:20am (ACDT) and collided with another four-wheel drive.
The man is currently in hospital with serious injuries, but the driver and a female passenger in the other vehicle were killed.
Both were aged 24 and from Whyalla Norrie.
Two other passengers in their four-wheel drive, a 25-year-old woman and 23-year-old man from Whyalla Stuart, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The Major Crime squad is working alongside local police in trying to piece together the circumstances of the crash.
Superintendent Bob Fauser said it was an example of "one car being in the wrong place at the wrong time".
He said an initial investigation uncovered anomalies that needed explanation.
"Suicide is one of the lines of inquiry that we're following," he said.
"At this time we do not have sufficient information to give anything more about those particular circumstances and we won't until such time as we've spoken to the surviving driver."
Superintendent Fauser said the surviving driver may not be able to be interviewed for several days.
The accident came in the middle of a 21-hour horror period on the state's roads during which two other people were killed.
A 34-year-old man from Hackham West was killed when his car collided with a four-wheel drive and then a tree just before 8:30am at Clarendon in the Adelaide Hills.

Police said the car was travelling too fast for the slippery conditions on Piggott Range Road.
The other driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
On Sunday a 34-year-old Northern Territory man was killed in a single car rollover near the Barossa Valley.
Police were called to the scene at about 11:40am on the Sturt Highway near Shea-Oak Log.
Superintendent Fauser was highly critical of the driver, describing him as "a person who had complete contempt for his own safety and the safety of other road users".
"He chose to drive while drinking, he chose to drive at excessive speed and he chose to not wear a seatbelt," he said.
"That particular stretch of road is one of South Australia's safest and most engineered roads. There clearly was no other cause to this crash than behavioural factors."
Another man was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The state's road toll is 103 compared with 97 at the same time last year.
