Parents in Willetton can breathe a little easier this school term

the speed limit between Kingsford Drive and Balboa Row is now 40km/h all day
This area includes Willetton Senior High School
and Castlereagh School; all busy school zones with heavy foot traffic
the City of Canning is rolling out additional upgrades on Pinetree Gully Road
These include new traffic calming measures
and improvements to the pedestrian crossing
The works are part of the 2025–2026 Black Spot Program
But the stretch between Kennon Street and Burren Gate
home to Willetton Basketball Stadium and Southlands Shopping Centre
has been reduced further to 40km/h due to high foot traffic
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the changes reflect the City’s ongoing commitment to safety
we aim to create safer streets for everyone,” he said
Willetton Senior High School Principal Trevor Hunter welcomed the move
especially with more than 2,700 students attending the school
“Many students and families travel through the area throughout the day
These changes are both necessary and timely,” he said
agreed: “The safety of our children is paramount
These new speed limits will help create a more pedestrian-friendly environment around our school.”
Mayor Hall said the initiative is part of a broader strategy
“We are committed to making Canning a welcoming and thriving community for all residents and visitors,” he said

The City of Canning has voted to apply for a grant from the Department of Local Government
Sport and Cultural Industries to fund the upgrade of change rooms and facilities at Wyong Reserve (Commonly referred to as Wyong Park or Oval) in Bentley
the City is seeking $1,008,002 from the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) for the $3,024,006 project
The current plan will see a renewal of the Wyong Sports Facility clubrooms and new changerooms installed at the Merv McIntosh Pavilion
The proposed development will include two AFL-size gender-neutral change rooms with modern amenities
Additional improvements include public kiosks
three club storage areas with furniture and display cabinets
and enhanced accessibility throughout the facility
The officer’s report to the council notes that the ageing facilities at Wyong Reserve are becoming increasingly costly to maintain and are likely to see declining usage
“If the application for CSRFF funding is not successful
Council will need to further consider whether the project will proceed in the 2025/2026 Financial Year through an additional municipal funding allocation,” the report stated
“Delivering improved facilities will allow community user groups and clubs to increase participation rates and contribute to the City as a ‘welcoming and thriving’ community.”
The park is currently home to three sporting clubs
which make up the Canning Sports Association
which have all been part of the consultation process
Mayor Patrick Hall said the upgrades are desperately needed and hopes the grant will be approved to ensure the project proceeds sooner rather than later
“The buildings are being renewed based on the condition of the assets and the need to improve access and provide for gender equality in the City’s sporting and community facilities,” he said
“Wyong Park is already a thriving public open space
with significant active and passive usage of the reserve already occurring
The City will continue to support club growth and development at all sport and recreation locations.”
councillors also approved the officer’s recommendation to apply for additional funding to install new lighting at Willetton Reserve Pavilion
“The Willetton sports lighting project presents an opportunity for the City to enhance sporting infrastructure by upgrading lighting and increasing access to the City’s soccer pitches,” the report said
Willetton Reserve is currently home to the Canning City Soccer Club and Willetton Baseball
Through an application to the Department of Local Government
Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Club Night Lights 2025/2026 funding program
the City can receive up to $448,000 from DLGSC to help cover the estimated $1,360,000 cost of the Willetton Park Sports Lighting Upgrade
The report proposes increasing the oval’s lighting by doubling its current brightness levels
allowing for safer playing conditions and improved visibility during night-time sports and activities
“The project will benefit all users of the oval by improving access and participation in physical activities at Willetton Reserve
It will allow Canning City to expand membership and schedule new training sessions at times that best meet the needs of its members,” the report states
A once respected residential home builder has come under fire from embattled customers who have shared with API Magazine their suffering personally and financially
as the company shuts them off and fails to progress their new homes for years at a time
A Perth residential builder with tax debts totalling almost $4 million has caused heartache for hundreds of customers waiting as long as four years for work on their homes to progress
which has publicly announced it will not be responding to media enquiries
is now facing legal action from three subcontractors
and two site security firms owed $26,063 and $3,652
there is an emotional toll that is mounting on the company’s many distressed customers
API Magazine spoke to four Nicheliving clients who are facing immense financial and personal challenges as a result of the builder’s failure to deliver their new homes. As reported earlier this month, scores of formal complaints have been filed against the recalcitrant builder
Three of the property owners have stalled projects in south-of-the-river Willetton, with another in outer suburban Alkimos to the north of Perth city
All were facing extreme stress and trying to cope with the ramifications stemming from projects years overdue
The company’s most visible efforts to address customer concerns appears to have been its placing of an advertisement on a job search website seeking a Marketing and Communications Manager to counter the negative publicity that has inundated the business
That will offer limited solace to Alastair and Margaret Martin
who signed a contract in November 2020 with completion inked as happening by Christmas 2021
“We are now paying $3,375 a month on rent while also paying $2,730 a month on mortgage repayments
which we cannot fix due to it being a construction loan
not to mention additional costs such as strata fees
“We calculate that we have lost out on more than $70,000 by having to pay additional rent from the initial date we assumed the house would be completed.”
“This is affecting our mental health considerably
“We also have a seven-year old son and we are worried what affect this is having on his wellbeing
as he constantly sees his parents in stress
“Nicheliving are completely oblivious to the plight of their clients
“The managing director (Ronnie Michel-Elhaj) has continually mentioned the supposed equity we have made on our properties
we have lost a lot with the additional rent we have paid.”
The couple said the only time of late that any sporadic work had taken place was soon before the four State Administrative Tribunal hearings they had initiated
“Nicheliving have said completion could be anywhere between three to six months away but we don’t trust anything they say.”
Moulina Sahai said her Alkimos build was initially due for completion by November 2022 but is currently stuck with a roofless two storey shell that hasn’t progressed for a year and has now been damaged by the elements
“I have been stuck at the first floor plate height for a year and now the timber framework has decayed and needs replacement
“Aside from an assurance that an onsite meeting will take place on 2 August and a claim the timber would be inspected
Ms Sahai said the first sense things had gone awry was when the slab went down in August 2021 and then the brickwork took eight months to complete on a 7.5 m frontage ground floor
it was all wrong and not up to coastal grade.”
legal and utility bills on a property I can’t use
with no completion date in sight - how long does this go on?”
Another Willetton victim of Nicheliving’s woes and lack of communication is Arnold Cho
whose new home project has stalled for 14 months
He is now forking out $700 a week in rent and more money on storage
strata and other bills on the hapless project
Mr Cho said communication from the company was scarce and no completion date had been proffered
“I’m really struggling and every time I stop by my unfinished house I am extremely stressed about the absence of any progress and further pained by the unanswered calls to the builder
“I just want to know when they will complete the house and what compensation will be paid for the ridiculous delay.”
seen numerous build completion deadline promises come and go and has now gone two years without any communication from the company
I have mortgage costs and rent doubling my expenses
“There is supposedly a regulator but nobody takes any action against the builder for reasons I don’t understand
says he is angry about the situation but there is no visible government action that is doing anyone any good.”
Mr Cook last week said the WA Government was still hoping to work with the company to get the homes finished
without having to step in directly to rescue the company and complete the building projects
“We have a range of measures at our disposal that we can continue to look at in terms of alleviating this situation,” he said
“We need to continue to look at all those measures
“My fervent hope is that Nicheliving get on and finish those properties
and we’re working with them to see if that is at all possible.”
High building costs have taken a toll on builders around the nation but signs are emerging that rampant building material inflation is easing
After years of unprecedented accelerated growth, residential construction costs have stabilised
growing at the slowest annual rate in 22 years
CoreLogic’s Cordell Construction Cost Index (CCCI)
There's no industry sector in Australia performing worse than construction when it comes to business failures and insolvencies

With the WA state election just four weeks away
election promises are rolling in thick and fast from both major parties in the Riverton electorate
as the 9 per cent marginal seat proves to be a key battleground
has unveiled a series of promises primarily focused on local infrastructure
aiming to appeal to voters ahead of the upcoming election
Among WA Labor’s biggest commitments in the area is a $20 million pledge for the redevelopment of the Willetton Sports and Community Centre
and upgrades to the netball and bowling clubs
last week Dr Jags announced an $850,000 pledge to upgrade the Vic and Audrey Varischetti Pavilion (Riverton Pavilion)
which would benefit the Riverton Junior Football Club
and the Riverton Rossmoyne Junior Cricket Club
The proposed developments include modern female changerooms to support growing female participation in sports and an expansion of existing clubroom facilities
“Female participation in sport has grown significantly in recent years
and it’s vital that our facilities reflect that,” he said
“This upgrade is about investing in our local community
It’s about creating spaces that reflect the values of inclusion
and community spirit that our local sporting clubs show every day.”
represented by City of Canning Deputy Mayor Amanda Spencer-Teo
is aiming to dislodge Dr Jags from the seat once held by former WA Liberal leader Mike Nahan for 13 years
and are also investing heavily to secure local support
Spencer-Teo has committed $1.2 million to upgrade Riverton Pavilion
with the proposed works also including new female-friendly changerooms
and new playground/exercise equipment at Riverton Reserve
This recent commitment follows last year’s pledge by the WA Liberals to partially fund a new indoor sports facility in Riverton
with $10 million allocated to provide the Rossmoyne Volleyball Club a dedicated space for training and competition
who has served on the Canning Council for five years
believes financial pressures are the biggest concern for residents in the Riverton electorate
“There’s not a day that goes by where parents aren’t discussing the waiting times in our public health system
increase in criminal behaviour and cost of living pressures,” she said
“The cost of living is really hurting local families
and this Government’s only response is free pre-election public transport fares and the token sugar hits like free zoo passes.”
Spencer-Teo has also announced additional commitments
to fund minor modifications and implement the recommendations from Main Roads WA at the Vahland Avenue and High Road intersection
Other WA Liberal promises in the area include $43,000 for the installation of a disability access ramp at the Willetton Community Garden
$110,000 in funding for exercise equipment on the Shelley Beach Foreshore
and $77,000 for equipment and facility upgrades for the Riverton Aquanauts at the Riverton Leisureplex
Dr Jags and WA Labor have also been pumping out funding commitments in several smaller initiatives
promising financial support for minor upgrades and support to local clubs
These include $105,000 for the Rossmoyne Junior Football Club and Rossmoyne Amateur Football Club’s Shelley Reserve clubrooms
$20,000 for the Riverton Calisthenics Club
and $50,000 for the Rossmoyne Bowling Club
$42,000 has been promised to the Riverton Aquanauts and $50,000 to the Canning City Football Club
WA Labor has also made a $60,000 commitment for the Willetton Baseball Club’s facilities
$21,000 for the Herald Avenue Seniors Centre Computer Club
$50,000 for the Lynwood United Football Club
$40,000 for the Willetton Basketball Club and $46,000 for passive lighting along the footpaths at Arlington Park in Willetton
Smaller contributions include $7,000 for the Canning Sea Scouts for new equipment and a boat ramp
Enrolment and changes to voter details for the 2025 WA state election must be completed by 6 pm on February 13
The Willetton Blues Integrated team have secured a spot in the grand final after an impressive 52-point victory over High Wycombe last Saturday at Burrendah Reserve
The All Abilities side got off to a strong start
leading the Bulldogs by 26 points at quarter-time and further extending their lead to 50 points by three-quarter time
is incredibly proud of all his players and is thrilled to see them grow both as footballers and as individuals
“Watching the players progress is very rewarding,” Mr Phillips said
all integrated with different disabilities
who has voluntarily coached the team for the past four years alongside assistant Brian Upson
believes there’s room for the competition to grow and encourages other teams to start their own All Ability side
“There’s probably enough demand now for more clubs or even some clubs to have second teams.”
which began as Integrated Football in 2008/09
has developed into a competitive league that promotes well-being
independence and life skills for players with disabilities and all abilities
The Willetton Blues will play off in the grand final at Coolbinia Oval
against either the Coolbinia Falcons or the High Wycombe Bulldogs

A “radicalised” teenage boy was shot dead by police following an “extremely confronting” incident in Perth’s southern suburbs on Saturday night
WA Premier Roger Cook said a 16-year-old boy was shot by a police officer after rushing him with a knife in a Bunnings car park on High Street in Willetton about 10pm
“A 16-year-old male armed with a knife who had already wounded a member of the public
in response a police officer discharged his firearm fatally wounding the male,” he said
“There are indications [the teenager] had been radicalised online
“Members of the WA Muslim community who were concerned by his behaviour contacted police prior to the incident and I thank them for their help
they encountered a very confronting situation but their rapid and professional response kept our community safe.”

WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said several people called triple zero concerned about the actions of the teenager
after he indicated he was going to hurt people
who was a Caucasian male who had converted to Islam
also called police and told them he was going to commit acts of violence
but did not tell the phone operator who or where he was
Three minutes after the first triple zero call from a person at the scene
three police officers arrived at the Bunnings car park and found the boy running around with a large kitchen knife
a third drew his firearm and ordered him to drop the weapon
however the boy was wearing baggy clothes and was not brought down
When he lunged at the third police officer
The Bunnings car park where the teenager was fatally shot
Blanch said the teen had a complex mental health history and was taking part in a rehabilitation program for people who had been radicalised online
He had been in the program since he was 14
We do not believe there was a network involved,” he said
Blanch declined to declare the event a terror incident
sometimes you would see a terrorist act be declared very early,” he said
I don’t need additional capability at this time
or at least the definition [of a terrorist act]
that’s something we can work towards as we find out more information from the motivations behind this
“It would be too early for me to act now because I don’t have the concerns of a broader network that might be involved.”
was stabbed in the back before police arrived
It’s understood the man was exiting a nearby 24-hour gym when he was attacked
He is in hospital in a serious but stable condition
The Bunnings store has been closed for the day
WA Police Minister Paul Papalia said the community violence extremism program the teenager was taking part in was based on a neo-Nazi program in the Netherlands and focused on de-radicalising people
“This individual may not have done anything that would have enabled police to do anything other than get him into this program,” he said
The incident comes weeks after a teenager is alleged to have stabbed a Sydney church leader during a livestreamed sermon
Official sources briefed on the investigation said the alleged assailant in the church stabbing was part of a loose network of teenagers who communicated on encrypted apps
who were authorised to publicly disclose details of the briefing
said counter-terrorism police believed some members of the group were engaging with radical Islamic material
Blanch said this type of event in Perth was very rare
but we have a very large population in Australia and we don’t see these types of attacks almost ever really,” he said
“So my message for community is one of assurance
We live in one of the safest places in the world
This is a tragic and sad event … one is too many
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his thoughts to the people impacted by the incident in Willetton
“I have spoken with WA Premier Roger Cook this morning
and I thank the WA Police for acting swiftly to contain the incident,” he said
“I have also received a briefing on the situation by the ASIO director-general and the AFP commissioner
and I’m advised there is no ongoing threat to the community on the information available
“We are a peace-loving nation and there is no place for violent extremism in Australia.”
Cook will hold a meeting with multi-faith community leaders later on Sunday
The Australian National Imams Council described the incident as “tragic” and said its Perth members “will continue to assist the authorities as required.”

A Perth man who was stabbed in the back by a radicalised teenager who was then shot dead by police on Saturday night has spoken out about his ordeal for the first time
said he was “coming to terms with my injuries
and the circumstances surrounding the events of Saturday evening”
The Willetton stabbing victim recovering in hospital
The man was leaving a 24-hour gym about 10pm near Bunnings in Willetton when the 16-year-old stabbed him in the back with a large kitchen knife
Speaking from hospital the man said it was a “very difficult time for everyone involved”
“I would like to thank the first responders who attended the scene
the staff at Royal Perth Hospital for the treatment that I have received
and the community for their support,” he said
“This is very difficult time for everyone involved
and I ask that I now be afforded privacy as I recover from my physical injuries and the emotional toll that this has placed on me.”
Premier Roger Cook said members of WA’s Muslim community were concerned about the boy’s behaviour and contacted police in the lead up to the incident
The boy was known to police and was taking part in a de-radicalisation program
He was believed to have shared his extremist views with other Rossmoyne Senior High School students in a prayer room
which was unmonitored despite parents’ concerns
“I imagine [the 16-year-old] would have been able to use that prayer room without active oversight,” Department of Education director-general Lisa Rodgers told 6PR on Wednesday
“He was extremely radicalised and had complex issues
The school reported matters to the federal police when they observed some unusual behaviour.”
She said the school reported the boy’s behaviour
He was also placed in a de-radicalisation program
When questioned whether the parents had a genuine cause to be concerned and to want the prayer room shut down
Rodgers said there was a big difference between practising faith and becoming radicalised
She will meet with members of the Office of Multicultural Interests and faith leaders representing religious communities across Perth to discuss how to ensure prayer rooms were used appropriately

A concerned parent at the Perth school attended by a teenager shot dead by police on Saturday contacted authorities in the weeks before the attack over fears students were being radicalised
the Rossmoyne Senior High School mother claimed a year 11 student at the school named Mohammed was using the school’s prayer room to try and convert her year 8 son to Islam
The parent said she had seen screenshots of a “prayer room group chat” between students which alarmed her
including a reference to the children watching videos of Zakir Naik
a controversial figure who has been accused by Indian authorities of spreading Islamic extremism
“Messages contained information about conversion to Islamic religion inducing fear to world end
targeting other students for conversion,” the letter read
“[My child] disclosed in the prayer room students are encouraged to watch videos of Zakir Naik … he was told not to inform parents
“Me and my husband are worried for [our child] and our family’s safety … as a parent
I am seriously concerned why my son was targeted.”

A rat infestation and rodent poo has led to a Nando's restaurant in Perth being slapped with one of the biggest food safety fines seen in Western Australia in years
The Portuguese chicken brand's Willetton branch was fined $160,000 for 10 breaches of the Food Act
which were discovered during a routine inspection in September 2023
The offences included not taking all practicable measures to stop pests from entering and to eradicate them, the West Australian reported.
Among the images taken by an inspector are pictures of a dead rat under a sink, rat poo on a box of tomatoes and on the floor, a filthy floor, mouldy surfaces and grease on a wall.
'A rodent infestation was identified at the premises, which was considered to be a very serious public health risk,' City of Canning mayor Patrick Hall said.
Mr Hall said there was also evidence of rodents and rat droppings found throughout the food preparation and storage areas.
Nando's was directed to immediately close the restaurant and to fix the food safety issues.
'The business responded by closing, rectifying the cleanliness, maintenance, rodent infestation and related food safety matters and then subsequently reopened,' Mr Hall said.
'The seriousness of the food safety risks were such that legal action was warranted and in the public interest,' he said.
The Willetton outlet was also convicted for selling food past its use-by date, failure to avoid the accumulation of food waste, dirt, and grease, failure to avoid food contamination, failure to maintain equipment to a clean standard, failure to ensure equipment was in a good state of repair, and failure to maintain easily accessible hand-washing facilities.
The restaurant has been inspected again by officials who issued a certificate allowing it to reopen.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted both the Willetton branch of Nando's and the company's Australian head office seeking comment.

Social media posts show the teenager was a happy boy
pictured a decade ago playing with Meccano — a building toy similar to Lego
That same boy continued the hobby with his father for years
But by 2022, his personality had taken a dark turn with his descent into Islamic radicalisation so serious police felt he needed to be part of a program that only a handful of WA teens are in.
The boy’s mother — who had previously been a cyber safety advocate — declined to comment when speaking with The Nightly at their family home.
The teenager went to the esteemed Rossmoyne school, in Perth’s southern suburbs, which has been celebrated for its academic achievements.
The Nightly understands parents at the school had tried to warn Education Minister Tony Buti about the behaviour of a group of boys amid fears they were trying to radicalise other students.
One parent even went as far as trying to warn the Australian Federal Police that the group was trying to “indoctrinate” their son.
“Correspondence was recently received regarding a student at a public secondary school. As appropriate, this correspondence was referred to the Department of Education,” a WA Government spokesman said.
Police at the scene of a stabbing on Saturday night in Willetton. Credit: 7NEWS/7NEWSParents who spoke with The Nightly said the teenager was linked to a toilet block that was damaged at the school last year.
They also said a boy in a group at the school had threatened to hurt people at an upcoming graduation.
Principal Alan Brown sent an email to parents on Sunday afternoon offering support and advice.
“Young people may want to meet in groups or turn to social media for support and to express their feelings. Whilst this may be helpful, please be aware of potential misinformation or inappropriate comments,” he said.
“If you become aware of any such gatherings, it is important to make sure there are responsible adults present, and you may wish to accompany your child.”
Mr Blanch said the boy had been known to police since the age of 14 and that he had suffered from mental health issues.
“(The program is) for those that are exhibiting behaviours that might be religious or issues motivated,” Mr Blanch said.
“This 16-year-old Caucasian male was part of that program.
“I think this is a very challenged individual who was there on the night, and I think the family really do understand the situation that police were in.”
Mr Blanch confirmed police were liaising with the family.
“I think this is a very challenged individual who was there on the night and I think the family really do understand the situation that police were in,” he said.
“They are being very forthcoming with police.”

Immediately before stabbing attack police received triple-zero call from person believed to be the 16-year-old
The Perth teenager shot dead by police in a suburban car park after he stabbed a man rang police before the assault, warning he was going to “commit acts of violence” and told friends he was going “in the path of jihad”.
The 16-year-old teenager, who cannot be named, was shot dead in the car park of Bunnings Warehouse in Willetton, in Perth’s south, on Saturday night, after he stabbed a man in the back and then refused police orders to put down his knife.
Immediately before the attack, police received a triple-zero call from a person, believed to be the teenager, who told the operator they were “going to commit acts of violence”, before hanging up.
The boy also messaged multiple people before the assault saying: “Brothers please forgive me for any time I have wronged you, I am going in the path of jihad tonight for the sake of allah azzawajal, I am a soldier of the mujahideen of al-qaeda and take responsibility for the actions that will in sha allah ta’ala take place tonight [sic].”

the Willetton Basketball Association has been working hard to get a four-court expansion to its existing stadium facilities
The existing four-court stadium had been stretched beyond capacity for years and more than one hundred children were on a waiting list to play basketball but that’s not the case anymore
Member for Tangney Ben Morton joined thousands of local families earlier last week to welcome the completion of the stadium expansion

50 per cent of the cost of this important project,” he said
“The Willetton Basketball Stadium Expansion has not only doubled the number of basketball courts to eight indoor courts
but also has new facilities for other sports
new community meeting rooms and space for first aid treatment.”
The expansion project cost a total of $10.5 million
which includes $5.5 million from the federal government
$2.2 million from the City of Canning and $1.3 million from the Willetton Basketball Association
with the assistance of a City of Canning loan facility
The Prime Minister Scott Morrison personally thanked all the contributors towards the expansion project through a video last week
Chief executive officer Mark Whinnett said there was a general sense of pride in welcoming so many people from the association’s past and present history to the grand opening on August 18
“We were very pleased with the grand opening event and see it as a defining moment in the history of Willetton Basketball Association,” he said
“It certainly means a lot to many people from within WBA to see this long awaited project finally come to fruition and become a reality
to the Willetton basketball community and sporting community in general it provides them with a wonderful and modern multi-sports stadium for which they can enjoy utilising for many years to come and will be of great benefit to our local community in many ways
“Having been a dream so long in the making
we would like to say thank you to all for their faith
patience and co-operation during the building process
“The congratulatory message from the Prime Minister was the icing on the cake so to speak and an exciting moment for all in attendance at the grand opening.”
